This work presents the results of a transdisciplinary analysis performed on Harward's Almanac (Dublin, 1666), an extremely rare volume currently housed in the National Library of Ireland. The uniqueness and historical value of the Almanac is related to the presence of nineteen handwritten poems, entered by an anonymous scribe. These record textually important English clandestine satire circulating anonymously in Dublin in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Following a comprehensive historical assessment, it appeared evident that the current order of leaves was incorrect. To reconstruct the correct order of the leaves, and hence the likely sequence in which the manuscript poems were inscribed, this study employed a codicological/paleographic analysis complemented by analytical (X-ray fluorescence, XRF) and statistical (Self Organizing Map, SOM) investigation. Specifically, point XRF analysis was carried out for each handwritten page of the Almanac, allowing identification of ink elemental compositions (iron-based ink) and successfully supporting the validity of historical hypotheses on the poems' order of inscription. The statistical organization of XRF data by SOMs allowed easy bi-dimensional visualization of the data set (54 points) and identification of ink similarities, once more validating the historical assessment. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and chitosan (Cht) have been studied extensively for oxygen and water vapour barrier coatings in biodegradable, compostable or recyclable paper packaging. However, rare studies have been performed by using scalable, inexpensive, and fast continuous slot-die coating processes, and none yet in combination with fast' and high-throughput near-infrared (NIR) light energy drying. In this frame, we studied the feasibility of a moderately concentrated (11 wt%) anionic CNC and (2 wt%) cationic Cht coating (both containing 20 wt% sorbitol related to the weight of CNC/Cht), by using plain and pigment pre-treated papers. The effect of coating parameters (injection speed, dry thickness settings) were investigated on coating quantity (dry weight, thickness) and homogeneity (coverage), papers' structure (thickness, grammage, density), whiteness, surface wettability, barrier (air, oxygen and water vapour) properties and adhesion (surface strength). The coating homogeneity was dependent primarily on the suspensions' viscosity, and secondarily on the applied coating parameters, whereby CNCs could be applied at 1–2 times higher injection speeds (up to 80 mL/min) and versatile coating weights, but required a relatively longer time to dry. The CNCs thus exhibited outstanding air (4.2–1.5 nm/Pa s) and oxygen (2.7–1.1 cm3 mm/m2 d kPa) barrier performance at 50% RH and 22–33 g/m2 deposition, whereas on top deposited Cht (3–4 g/m2) reduced its wetting time and improved the water vapour barrier (0.23–0.28 g mm/m2 d Pa). The balanced barrier properties were achieved due to the polar characteristic of CNCs, the hydrophobic nature of Cht and the quantity of the applied bilayer coating that can provide sustainable paper-based packaging. Flexible and small-scale energy storage technologies are critical for future applications such as wearable electronics. In this context, paper has emerged as a lightweight, low-cost, and ecologically friendly flexible substrate for energy storage devices. This paper presents a simple method for fabricating a micro-supercapacitor (MSC) using a wax printing approach that can achieve high resolution without requiring complex processes. In addition, the developed MnO2–Au-paper (MAP) microelectrodes with high porosity exhibit enhanced charge and ion transfer while maintaining a stable flexibility. The solid-state micro-supercapacitor delivers a very large areal capacitance of 624.32 mF cm−2 at 0.2 mA cm−2 and is stable under external stress. The highest energy and power densities obtained for the present MSCs (55.5 μWh cm−2 and 1.59 mW cm−2, respectively), are much larger than those previously reported for pseudocapacitive MSCs, including flexible ones. Cellulosic-based materials such as hemp fabric and paper have combined characteristics of renewability, biodegradability, flexibility, and recyclability. However, regular products are not suitable for use in unconventional applications due to inherent limitations, and accordingly, enabling new capabilities is a necessity. To this end, the conversion of regular hemp fabric and paper into high-strength products with hydrophobic function via surface engineering was explored. The fluorinated waterborne polyurethane (FWPU) emulsions were first synthesized as functional coatings by in-situ polymerization. The structure and properties of the FWPU emulsion and film were characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM, TG, and XPS. The results showed that the grafting of perfluorooctanol imparts WPU film excellent hydrophobicity, and the water contact angle increases from 71.2° to 105.9°. After the FWPU coating, the water contact angles of the hemp fabric and paper increase from 0° to 117.1° and 112.8°, respectively. Quite encouragingly, the coating generation of waterborne polyurethane-derived functional additives led to the increase of mechanical strength by more than 23% and 82%, in the case of qualitative filter paper and hemp fabric. Meanwhile, the folding strength of filter paper is increased by 132 times. The paper and pulp industry stands out to be one of the industries that are growing at a fast pace. Besides their characteristics such as high water consumption of 695.7 million m3 per year and subsequent high energy consumption, there are plenty of environmental impacts arising from this industry. Approximately 300 different types of harmful organic pollutants such as phenols, dioxins, and other organic substances are the significant effluents of the paper and pulp industry. As per the regulations set by the world health organization (WHO), the permissible limit of such pollutants is less than 1 ppm. Since the complete degradation of these pollutants is difficult to achieve using conventional techniques, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely being used as promising alternatives. On the other hand, depleting non-renewable energy resources are forcing industries to look for energy-efficient technologies. Photocatalysis is one such AOPs, which has the potential to solve the energy-wastewater nexus and is the primary focus of this review in terms of waste treatment from the paper and pulp industry. The photocatalytic materials induce photoreactions by receiving photon energy from light. However, harnessing light energy to the fullest is a challenge owing to the limited share of UV spectrum in sunlight. Different composite photocatalysts at different loadings, pollutant concentrations, and contact time along with their respective efficiencies are reported. The enhancement in thermodynamic driving force due to shift in Fermi energy levels with a suitable example is explained. The dependence of photocatalysis on various factors such as organic species, temperature, and light intensity makes it tough to predict the precise kinetic model in real-life experiments. The hydrogen production from the degradation of organic pollutants was discussed vividly and by optimization of the processes, an estimated amount of 0.45% of the total world's energy could be produced from the paper and pulp industry alone. The terahertz spectrum of paper has been measured from room temperature to cryogenic temperatures. As the paper is cooled, the main absorption lines move to higher frequencies. The same behaviour is observed for two types of paper. The spectrum at base temperature provides the most direct comparison yet with calculations made using density functional theory, which assume the studied material to be at absolute zero temperature. Due to the surface hydrophobicity, the absorbing effect of the tobacco extract droplets on the reconstituted tobacco paper is unsatisfactory. Therefore, the surface property regulation of the tobacco paper has gained increasing attention. This work reports a novel argon (Ar) plasma treatment technique for improving the surface hydrophilicity and bacteriostatic effect of the paper. Firstly, Ar plasma was selected as the treatment gas and its improving effect was demonstrated through studying the contact angle changes of water droplet on the A4 paper. Then, the capillary fibers on the paper were bombarded by Ar plasma jet. The extract droplet contact angle on the reconstituted tobacco paper-15 s surface is only 14.6° within 1 s. In comparison to the pristine paper (5.9°/s), the absorption dynamic of the droplet increased to as high as 62.5°/s, which indicated the hydrophilicity was greatly improved by the Ar plasma method. The mechanism for improving the surface hydrophilicity of the cellulose in the tobacco paper also contributed to the generation of holes by Ar plasma jet, which increased the surface permeability of cellulose. At last, Ar plasma treatment showed excellent bacteriostatic effect, which could effectively inhibit the propagation and growth of fungi, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus on the tobacco paper. Plant-fibre ancient-books with cultural significance should be protected from moisture and pollution. In this work, a strategy of surface in-situ protection (building composite coating) was adopted to achieve good hydrophobicity, moisture-proofness and ink-contamination resistance at the surface of archaistic paper. By pre-ring opening of epoxy-based poly(vinyl silsesquioxane) (POSS) and spray of POSS/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mixed solution, in-situ construction of POSS/PVDF composite coating at the surface of ancient paper was achieved. Compared to water-absorbing ancient paper, POSS/PVDF co-modified ancient paper shows strong humidity resistance. The surface of co-modified ancient paper (epoxy-group pre-ring opening for 45 min) displays high hydrophobicity (water contact angle of ~142.6°), ascribed to greatly improved surface roughness of paper fibres as well as complete coverage of high-content Si/F elements on fibre surface. POSS-modified and neat ancient-paper materials show surface water contact angles of ~113.9° and 0°, respectively. Robust ink-resistance of POSS/PVDF co-modified ancient-paper surface is realized. The innovation in this work lies in perfect synergy of cage-shaped POSS and threadlike PVDF in coating. The gas flow through sheet-like porous materials such as paper can show marked lateral variations due to a heterogeneous, locally varying microstructure. Hence, reliable predictions of such lateral flux variations require an appropriate consideration of local variations in the microstructure. The flow through such sheet-like materials is commonly described with Darcy's law in which permeances are formulated in terms of microstructure properties, such as porosities, tortuosities, or hydraulic radii. This work proposes an extension of existing permeance models that directly considers the variation and the cross-dependence between local microstructure properties. The extended model is applied to local air fluxes through a paper sheet to exemplarily reveal the joint impact of local porosities and local tortuosities on the air flux. The key extension is to consider a joint distribution of porosity and tortuosity. The latter is constructed from the univariate property distributions using a copula approach and yields local tortuosities including their variation for any encountered local porosity. These values jointly enter any permeance model that qualitatively captures the dependence of the air flux on the porosity. To assess the merit of the model, variations in the air flux and in the pore space properties are independently determined from the same measured microstructure of paper. Air flux variations are provided by computational fluid dynamics simulations on multiple, nonoverlapping segments taken from the microstructure. A statistical analysis of the entire microstructure provides the distribution of local porosity, tortuosity, and thicknesses. Our model quantitatively explains that porosity-dependent variations in the tortuosity, in particular the ones associated with high-volume pathways, decisively determine air flux variations. A new biodegradable cellulose derivative-non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) was prepared, and densities, viscosities, and surface tension of NIPU were measured by density bottle method, capillary viscometer and BZY-2 type full automatic surface tension meter respectively from 298.15 to 318.15 K. The results showed that densities, viscosities and surface tension were related to temperature and concentration. The viscosity and surface tension decreased with the increase in temperature at the same concentration; at the same temperature, viscosity and surface tension were positively correlated with concentration. And the experimental data were correlated by the correlation equations of viscosity and temperature, they showed a good agreement with the fitting results of the related equations. The three cellulosic key chromophores, 2,5-dihydroxy-[1,4]-benzoquinone, 5,8-dihydroxy-[1,4]-naphthoquinone and 2,5-dihydroxy-acetophenone, are nearly ubiquitous in cellulosic materials because of their special structures and resonance stabilization with highly delocalized double bonds that renders them thermodynamically very stable and resistant towards bleaching. All of these compounds possess acidic hydroxyl groups. The current work explores the derivatization of these OH groups by a phosphitylation agent followed by 31P NMR analysis, an approach that is very frequently used for quantitative OH group analysis and differentiation in lignins and lignin derivatives. The chemical shifts are reported and structural peculiarities of the chromophore derivatives are discussed. A biodegradable nanofiltration membrane has been obtained for the processes of water purification from calcium and magnesium cations. The membrane is obtained on a porous paper substrate with a surface layer of cellulose acetate (CA); ethanol is added as a pore former to the polymer solution. It is found that the surface of the membranes is hydrophilic; the total porosity of the membrane is 51%. According to the results of the SEM study, the membrane consists of a paper substrate (90 μm), a porous CA layer (8–10 μm), and a dense CA surface layer (1 μm). The resulting MCA3 membrane has been used for nanofiltration of tap water, where a high retention capacity for calcium and magnesium ions has been shown (77.2% at a specific productivity of 111 dm3/(m2 h)), which is not inferior to the parameters of a commercial nanofiltration membrane. The possibility of natural decomposition of spent membranes in the soil cover was studied in this work. The obtained composite membranes decompose by more than 60% within 24 days. The development of paper-based flexible electronic devices can reduce the use of traditional petroleum-based polymer substrates, thereby reducing environmental pollution. However, paper substrates tend to absorb moisture, which would degrade the performance of electronic devices. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films were proposed as coatings for the paper substrate to improve the hydrophobic performance of the paper, thereby enhancing the stability of paper-based device. Hydrophobic PTFE films were deposited on both sides of the paper substrate using electron beam evaporation, which block the paper substrate from absorbing moisture. The zinc oxide (ZnO) film was sputtered onto the paper substrate and fabricated into ultraviolet photodetectors (UVPD). Numerical simulations show that the introduction of PTFE films can greatly reduce the stress from 3.21 × 109 N m−2 to 3.50 × 107 N m−2 in the ZnO epitaxial layer on the paper substrate. The stability and detectivity of the UVPD with PTFE coatings are greatly improved compared to that without PTFE coatings, providing a promising avenue for fabricating stable, superior, and sustainable paper-based electronic devices. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a simple and low-cost colorimetric method based on Fe(III) chloride and potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) for determination of acetaminophen, ascorbic acid and phenylephrine, which can be used in small laboratories using restricted materials and resources. A paper based sensor using the reagent was introduced. Significance of different variables in determination of drugs were studied by Placket-Burman design and optimal values for concentration of hydrochloric acid, Fe(III) chloride and potassium hexacyano ferrate(III), 0.01 M, 0.004 M and 0.004 M, respectively were obtained. Without using any sophisticated instrument and only by image analysis the concentration of acetaminophen, ascorbic acid and phenylephrine was determined in pharmaceutical samples. In this way we were able to determine by analyzing the final color of the reactions. The linear range in ppm for all the analytes was obtained as 0.00–50.00 and limit of detection of 2.52, 2.48 and 2.48 were obtained for acetaminophen, ascorbic acid and phenylephrine, respectively. Percent relative standard deviation (RSD %) and percent relative error (RE %) of the proposed method for analysis of real samples of acetaminophen tablet were 4.77 and 7.64, ascorbic acid tablet, 4.73 and 1.41, and phenylephrine syrup, 2.44 and − 1.61, respectively. The production of paper is a key component for global civilization. Around 300 million tonnes of paper are produced every day globally, with matured pulpwood being the major contributor. Due to rising demand for paper and the depletion of available wood resources, researchers are now focused on finding alternative non-wood resources that are suitable for pulp and paper production. The current study aims to produce eco-friendly and biodegradable paper using a combination of Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) and dried flowers. Water hyacinth is considered as a lignocellulose plant which contains 57% lignocellulose, and dried flower contains 40% cellulose, which is the prime source for paper production. Various sections of water hyacinth, including wet and dry petiole, leaves, and root, were blended with dried flowers through the soda process. Then, the physical properties and FTIR analysis was carried out to identify the quality of the paper produced. The paper produced from root and dried petiole has a lower thickness (1.0 mm and 0.5 mm) than other mix proportions. The opacity of the leaves was found to be 0.5% (light passing) and for the root 0.7% (light passing). Also, the dry petiole and root paper have a good dry tensile strength of 1.30Kpa and 1.20Kpa, respectively. Pulp fibers are among the most abundant and cost effective cellulose source for the fabrication of polymer-cellulose composites. A straightforward method is to impregnate pulp fibers into thermoplastic films by hot press forming. As such, tissue materials made from hard or soft wood lignin-free Kraft fibers are attractive. In this work, we prepared cellulose fiber-polylactic acid (PLA) composite films by impregnating PLA films into a 40 g/m2 tissue paper texture. A PLA film was sandwiched between single and multiple layers of cellulose tissues by hot pressing, forming composite films. Up to 40 wt% cellulose could be incorporated into PLA in this way. The effect of cellulose fiber content on the composite thermomechanical properties has been studied and reported. A natural terpene, limonene, was infused into the cellulose fibers by immersion coating to produce antioxidant composites. Limonene-modified composites demonstrated long-term antioxidant release and activity for three days, verified by 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and free iron ions (Fe2+)/ferrozine chelating assays separately. The short-term (2 h) antioxidant activity of the biocomposites reached 50–70% levels depending on the cellulose fiber concentration for the DPPH and CUPRAC assays but remained lower at 20–55% levels in the metal chelating assay. Due to sustained release of limonene from the composites, at the end of the 5-day period, the iron chelating antioxidant activity of the composites improved reaching 75%, whereas for DPPH and CUPRAC assay, 90% activity was recorded. Cellulose-based materials represent a renewable, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly alternative to plastic from fossil resources. Nanopaper is a strong and lightweight material formed from cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Paper and nanopaper have been considered as excellent alternatives to plastics for use in agriculture and for packaging applications. However, common for both paper and nanopaper is their hydrophilic character, and consequently, poor water-resistance properties. ORMOCER®s are a class of inorganic–organic polymers with excellent barrier and protective properties used for a range of coating applications. Here we present ORMOCER®-coated paper and nanopaper. The coated papers and nanopapers are characterized, both in terms of their morphology, hydrophobicity, and mechanical properties. We demonstrate that the pressure used during the pressing and drying of paper and nanopaper influence their tear and tensile—properties, and that the morphology of the coated nanopaper differs significantly from that of the coated paper. While the ORMOCER® was impregnated within the porous network of the paper, a well-defined two-layered morphology was obtained with the coated nanopaper. Further, the biodegradability of the nanopaper with and without coating was assessed. The degradation study demonstrated that both the pressure used during the pressing and drying of the nanopaper, and the composition of the ORMOCER®, influenced the rate of degradation. Taken together, ORMOCER®-coated paper and nanopaper are promising for the preparation of materials that are both water-resistant, renewable, and biodegradable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Paper-based analytical devices have prominently emerged as a group of diagnostic tools with prospective to eliminate the expensive, time-consuming, and intricate analytical methodologies. Wax printing has been a dominant technique to fabricate hydrophobic patterns on paper for fluid control, but the discontinuation of commercial solid ink printers has begun a genesis of alternate wax patterning strategies. In this study, a simple and rapid fabrication methodology for realizing a 96-well microtiter plate on paper has been developed. The method involves the use of commercially available polystyrene microplates as a stamp for wax patterning. The technique further eradicates the requirement of customized stamps and the step of heating paper substrates for creating wax barriers. Thus, wax stamped paper microplates can be used for a wide range of bioanalytical tests maneuvering reduced generation of non-biodegradable waste, minimal reagent usage, and inexpensive readout strategies. The viability of the fabricated platform has been assessed by colorimetric detection of glutathione using 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine–H2O2 redox system. RGB analysis of the colorimetric response showed a linear concentration range from 0 to 90 µM (R2 = 0.989) along with a detection limit of 28.375 µM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Transport of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through porous media with active surfaces takes place in many important applications, such as in cellulose-based materials for packaging. Generally, it is a complex process that combines diffusion with sorption at any time. To date, the data needed to use and validate the mathematical models proposed in literature to describe the mentioned processes are scarce and have not been systematically compiled. As an extension of the model of Ramarao et al. (Dry Technol 21(10):2007–2056, 2003) for the water vapor transport through paper, we propose to describe the transport of VOCs by a nonlinear Fisher–Kolmogorov–Petrovsky–Piskunov equation coupled to a partial differential equation (PDE) for the sorption process. The proposed PDE system contains specific material parameters such as diffusion coefficients and adsorption rates as multiplication factors. Although these parameters are essential for solving the PDEs at a given time scale, not all of the required parameters can be directly deduced from experiments, particularly diffusion coefficients and sorption constants. Therefore, we propose to use experimental concentration data, obtained for the migration of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) through a stack of paper sheets, to infer the sorption constant. These concentrations are considered as the outcome of a model prediction and are inserted into an inverse boundary problem. We employ Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to find the underlying sorption constant of DMSO on paper from this inverse problem. We illustrate how to practically combine PINN-based calculations with experimental data to obtain trustworthy transport-related material parameters. Finally we verify the obtained parameter by solving the forward migration problem via PINNs and finite element methods on the relevant time scale and show the satisfactory correspondence between the simulation and experimental results. The complete valorization of the lignocellulosic fractions plays a fundamental role in biorefineries' sustainability. One of the major challenges is finding technological configurations that allow using cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin simultaneously. Cellulose has been extensively studied, yet, hemicellulose and lignin remain as platforms to be valorized. Sequential pretreatments have shown an opportunity to valorize the latter two components into sugar-rich and lignin-rich fractions. After the sequential pretreatment, a solid fraction enriched in cellulose could still be used for paper production. This work consisted of pretreating wheat straw with a sequential Liquid-Hot-Water/Organosolv, characterizing the respective hemicellulosic sugar and lignin extracts, and evaluating the final cellulose-enriched pulp for papermaking. Different pretreated pulp/cellulose pulp formulations were used for paper production as a proof-of-concept. Tensile strength and bursting pressure of the papers were measured. After pretreatment, the calculated solid composition was 70%wt cellulose, 26%wt hemicellulose, and 4%wt lignin, with extraction yields of 5.1%, 51.3%, and 89.9%, respectively. The tested pulp formulations showed similar tensile index and bursting index values at 10/90 (77.1 Nm/g, 3189 kPa) and 20/80 (63 Nm/g, 2419 kPa) %wt pretreated pulp/pulp when compared to the pulp (77 Nm/g, 4534 kPa). This proof-of-concept of the papermaking showed the potential of the LHW-OS pretreated wheat straw as a replacement for pure cellulose pulp and encourages studying other substitutes such as unbleached pulp or further treating the LHW-OS pretreated wheat straw. This study applied various scientific analyses to one fragment of paper and three pigments excavated from earthenware found in the Hoeamsa Temple site at Yangju, Korea, which is believed to have been built in the early twelfth century. Radiocarbon dating of the paper fragment suggests a manufacture date between 1460 and 1646 (at a 95% confidence interval). It was estimated to have been used during the early and middle period of the Joseon dynasty (1391–1776), when the Hoeamsa Temple site was rebuilt. In addition, by staining the fiber of the paper fragment with Graff "C" stain, the paper's raw material was identified as paper mulberry through dislocation, cross-marking, and transparent membrane, which are characteristics of the bast fiber. Efforts were made to identify their material properties and manufacturing techniques of the three types of pigments. Color difference analysis was performed by distributing the pigments in large areas to reveal characteristic differences according to the color difference of the pigment. We found that green-type pigments are malachite and atacamite, red-type pigments are hematite based on the element Fe, and white-type pigments are quartz and muscovite based on the elements Si and Al. In addition, as the size distribution of the three types of pigments is wide and has a multi-peak distribution curve, it was concluded that the pigments were used without purification. The effect of bipolar and driving electrodes materials and also the electrolyte conductivity on the required potential for the beginning of the water electrolysis in the paper-based closed cell bipolar electrochemistry is investigated. The importance of the electrode material is studied by placement of various carbon paste mixtures as an electrode on the paper. Carbon paste mixtures are prepared with different carbon allotropes and various binders such as paraffin and ionic liquids. The effect of hydrophobicity, conductivity, and presence of common additives such as gold nanoparticle is discussed in detail. The role of electrolyte conductivity on the needed ∆E for water electrolysis initialization is investigated. Novel cationic macromolecular emulsifier (PD emulsifier) and anionic macromolecular emulsifier (PA emulsifier) were synthesized with acrylate monomer and E-TPA (self-made molecular weight regulator), which were further used to prepare cationic sizing agent (PD-sizing agent) and anionic sizing agent (PA-sizing agent) respectively. On the other hand, E-TPA was synthesized with epoxy resin and S, S′-bis(α,α′-dimethyl-α″-acetic acid)-trithiocarbonate. Because the performance of sizing agent and macromolecular emulsifier was affected by E-TPA with epoxy resin, the critical micelle concentration, solubilization and molecular weight of the emulsifier with various E-TPA dosages were studied, while the water resistance and mechanical properties of sizing paper were further researched. The results indicate that the water resistance and mechanical strength can be enhanced with epoxy resin, under the premise that the particle size of the sizing agent is small enough. The PD-sizing agent with the PD emulsifier of which the amount of E-TPA is 11.63 wt% shows the best sizing properties with folding endurance of 19, bursting strength of 211 kPa, tensile strength of 72.77 kN/m and the water absorption (cobb) of 54.23 g/m2. The PA-sizing agent with the PA emulsifier containing 11.63 wt% of E-TPA documents the best sizing properties with tensile strength of 61.49 kN/m, folding endurance of 14, bursting strength of 185.67 kPa and the cobb of 47.88 g/m2. Purpose: The pervasive use of plastics, coupled with inadequate waste management systems in many countries, has led to widespread leakage of plastics into the environment. In South Africa, the predominant type of shopping bags are single-use plastic bags; but paper, biodegradable plastic and re-usable bags have emerged as alternatives. To compare these alternatives in terms of environmental impacts across the whole product life cycle, we carried out a cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment (LCA) of 16 shopping bag types available in South Africa. Methods: The comparison includes single-use plastic, bioplastic and paper bags, as well as re-usable bags (typically made from plastic in South Africa). The functional unit was based on the estimated annual volume of groceries purchased per capita. An attributional LCA was carried out using the ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint(H) method, with 18 mid-point impact categories. In addition, given the lack of an impact category for plastic pollution in existing methods, we developed a mid-point indicator based on the persistence of plastics (and other materials) leaked to the environment (Persistence of leaked material, PersistenceLM). Specific attention was placed on modelling end-of-life and waste management in the South African context. Economic-based allocation at the point of substitution was used to apportion environmental impacts to virgin and recyclate material, and the production of recyclate was modelled using system expansion. Results and discussion: Re-usable bag types, specifically the 70 µm High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and non-woven Polyester bags, had the lowest environmental impacts for all indicators, except PersistenceLM. Paper and biodegradable plastic bags had a lower PersistenceLM impact as compared to the petro-based plastic bags, and therefore may be preferable in terms of avoiding plastics accumulating in the environment. The re-usable bags need to be used at least 3 to 10 times to offer lower environmental impacts than single-use ones. Among the single-use bags, biodegradable bags made from imported Polybutylene Adipate Terepthalate (PBAT) plus starch showed the lowest environmental impacts across all impact categories, including PersistenceLM, followed by the Paper bag. The single-use 24 µm HDPE bag (HDPE_24) with no recycled content had the highest overall environmental impacts, while increasing the recycled content reduced overall environmental impacts by up to 52%. Compared to other countries, the high environmental impacts of plastic bags in South Africa can largely be attributed to the coal-to-liquids process used for polymer production, which is intensive in terms of both energy and raw materials. The study describes the preparation of nanocellulose from organosolv hemp pulp and its application in the production of food packaging paper as an alternative to petroleum products. OHP was obtained from renewable plant materials hemp fibers by extraction with NaOH solution and cooking using a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. A stable transparent nanocellulose gel was extracted from OHP by acid hydrolysis followed by ultrasonic treatment. It was found that an increase in the consumption of sulfuric acid, temperature and duration of the OHP hydrolysis process improved the quality indicators of hemp nanocellulose. A linear dependence of the tensile strength and transparency of nanocellulose films on their density has been established. Morphological (SEM), structural (FTIR and XRD) and thermal analysis (TGA) of hemp fibers, OHP and nanocellulose were carried out. Nanocellulose films had a density of up to 1.56 g/cm3, a tensile strength of up to 66.7 MPa, a transparency of up to 87.3%. Atomic force microscopy method showed that the transverse dimension of nanocellulose particles is from 8 to 23 nm. Hemp nanocellulose had a higher crystallinity index (87.2%) than OHP (72.0%), but lower thermal stability. The positive effect of adding nanocellulose from hemp on improving all quality parameters of paper for food packaging has been shown. The addition of 2% hemp nanocellulose makes it possible to obtain paper that exceeds the breaking force requirements of premium grade paper by 40%, and the breaking length increases by 42% compared to paper without chemical additives. This publication presents the results of the fundamental research on the interaction of laser radiation and lignocellulosic fibres with respect to the melting of the fibre main components cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. In the first part, hand sheets made of different lignocellulosic fibres were irradiated with laser radiation from a carbon monoxide laser. Fluence-dependent interaction regimes, the dynamics of flash pyrolysis and chemical changes due to irradiation are discussed. Using a high-speed camera, an intermediate liquid state could be observed as a result of the irradiation. This is decomposed into gaseous reaction products by a highly dynamic boiling process. In addition to the time-resolved investigations, extensive FTIR studies were carried out. The second part is intended to further investigate former work on melting of cellulose. The basic idea is to combine laser radiation and mechanical pressure by compressing the sample between two steel bolts and simultaneously irradiating the joint. The processed samples show some visual indications of intermediate melting, such as increased transparency or flow behaviour. The adverse effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on human beings has sparked intense interest in the development of new sensors to effectively monitor UV and solar exposure. This paper describes a novel low-cost and flexible graphene oxide (GO)-based paper sensor capable of detecting the total amount of UV or sun energy delivered per unit area. GO is incorporated into the structure of standard printing paper, cellulose, via a low-cost fabrication technique. The effect of UV and solar radiation exposure on the GO paper-based sensor is investigated using a simple color change analysis. As a result, users can easily determine the amount of ultraviolet or solar energy received by the sensor using a simple color analysis application. A neural network (ANN) model is also explored to learn the relation between UV color intensity and exposure time, then digitally display the results. The accuracy for the developed ANN reached 96.83%. The disposable, cost-effective, simple, biodegradable, safe, and flexible characteristics of the paper-based UV sensor make it an attractive candidate for a variety of sensing applications. The results of studies evaluating the effect of type of impregnating paper on the impregnation and hot lamination of wood-based board materials are presented. In this paper, a chipboard (CB) is considered as the basis for the implementation of the process of materials finishing by means of hot lamination. Presently synthesis of edible oil for resin formation and using scrap paper as reinforcement for composite fabrication is still not carried out. In this work, acrylate epoxidized mustard oil (AEMO) was used after blending with a crosslinker N-Vinyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NVP) to fabricate scrap paper reinforced green composites. Mustard oil (MO), Epoxidized mustard oil (EMO) and acrylate epoxidized mustard oil (AEMO) were characterized using iodine value, oxirane content, acid value, FTIR, NMR and viscosity properties. The composites were fabricated using 50:50 ratio of AEMO: NVP and paper loading of 15%, 30% and 60% along with the neat sample. With an increase in paper loading, there was a significant improvement in mechanical properties giving 158.9, 150, 233, 566.66 and 140% improvement in tensile, young's, flexural strength, flexural moduli and impact strength at 60% loading. The elongation at break showed a value of 20% due to the stiff nature of composite. Biodegradability testing proved an increase in weight loss of composite with time, recording the highest weight loss of 7% for 60% composite sample. Dimensional stability showed excellent result for the neat and lower loaded composite samples. Thermogravimetric and differential scanning colorimetry analysis indicated improvement in thermal stability with higher loading %. Morphological analysis confirmed excellent interfacial adhesion and bonding with higher paper loading %. Dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated a significant rise in storage modulus (E') and loss modulus (E'') and decline in tan δ with broadening of the peak for maximum loading. High per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations have been detected in agricultural soils in Southwest Germany. Discharges of PFAS-contaminated paper sludge and compost are suspected to be the cause of the contamination. Perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) have been detected also in groundwater, drinking water, and plants in this area. Recently, previously unknown compounds have been identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Major contaminants were polyfluorinated dialkylated phosphate esters (diPAPs) and N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamide ethanol–based phosphate diester (diSAmPAP). In this study, HRMS screening for PFAS was applied to 14 soil samples from the contaminated area and 14 impregnated paper samples which were from a similar period than the contamination. The paper samples were characterized by diPAPs (from 4:2/6:2 to 12:2/12:2), fluorotelomer mercapto alkyl phosphates (FTMAPs; 6:2/6:2 to 10:2/10:2), and diSAmPAP. In soil samples, diPAPs and their transformation products (TPs) were the major contaminants, but also FTMAPs, diSAmPAP, and their TPs occurred. The distribution patterns of the carbon chain lengths of the precursor PFAS in soil samples were shown to resemble those in paper samples. This supports the hypothesis that paper sludge is a major source of contamination. The presence of major degradation products like PFCAs, FTSAs, or PFOS and their distribution of carbon chain lengths indicate the activity of biotic or abiotic degradation processes and selective leaching processes from the upper soil horizons. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) make up a significant proportion of the global burden of disease in vulnerable groups and tend to substantially impair the quality of life of those affected, making timely detection of UTIs a priority for public health. However, economic and societal barriers drastically reduce accessibility of traditional lab-based testing methods for critical patient groups in low-resource areas, negatively affecting their overall healthcare outcomes. As a result, cellulose-based materials such as paper and thread have garnered significant interest among researchers as substrates for so-called frugal analytical devices which leverage the material's portability and adaptability for facile and reproducible diagnoses of UTIs. Although the field may be only in its infancy, strategies aimed at commercial penetration can appreciably increase access to more healthcare options for at-risk people. In this review, we catalogue recent advances in devices that use cellulose-based materials as the primary housing or medium for UTI detection and chart out trends in the field. Herein, a novel modified polyvinyl alcohol(DA-IPVA) used as sizing agent was prepared by using diacetone acrylamide(DAAM)/adipic dihydrazide(ADH) as graft monomer and N-(isobutoxymethyl)acrylamide(IBMA) as self-cross-linking monomer. The effect of the amount of DAAM on the properties of emulsion, film and sizing paper was discussed. The surface micro-structure of the sizing paper was characterized by SEM and AFM. The addition of DAAM/ADH and IBMA endowed DA-IPVA with cross-linked active group and increased cross-linking density and hydrophobicity after ADH was added into the emulsion and the cross-linking structure was formed. The enhancing mechanism of surface sizing agent for paper was revealed. The DA-IPVA can be cross-linked on the surface and inside of the paper to form a dense network structure, which improves the bonding force between the fibers. When the mole fraction of DAAM of the cross-linking monomer is 8%, the surface sizing performance of the paper is obviously improved compared with the base paper. The dry and wet strength is increased by 266.5% and 334.3% respectively, and the folding resistance is increased 2946.67%. Direct fire, indirect heat, and extinguishing water cause great damage to cultural assets upon a fire disaster in a library or archive. Conservation and restoration of heat-damaged papers are particularly challenging due to the complexity and severity of the damage. Since valuable originals obviously cannot be used for the development of treatment methods and only to a limited extent for the analysis of the damage, it is necessary to produce model paper materials that have a high degree of similarity to fire-damaged papers, which was addressed in the present study. Three different heating methods were tested to produce model papers of different heating levels. Their altered optical, structural, and chemical properties were analyzed and compared with the results of original fire-damaged samples. The study points out pathways to enable the production of comparable sample materials. Heating between hot plates or in an oven produces papers that have properties quite similar to the originals in terms of surface area, paper structure, cellulose integrity, and interactions with water. The cleaning of particles from smooth and rough paper surfaces using a high-speed CO2 snow jet was investigated. The measurements included characterization of the jet properties, determination of the cleaning efficiency, and evaluation of any possible adverse effects. The method was compared with nitrogen jet cleaning and dry cleaning by commercial materials. The results showed that the CO2 snow jet is able to effectively remove particles from the paper surface and did not cause any observable degradation. The CO2 snow jet cleaning compared with the mechanical dry cleaning showed similar effectiveness without any adverse effects on the paper surface. Iron gall Inks corrosion causes paper degradation (browning, embrittlement) and treatments were developed to tackle this issue. They often include resizing with gelatin to reinforce the paper and its cellulosic fibers (of diameter approx. 10 µm). This work aimed at measuring the distribution of ink components at the scale of individual paper fibers so as to give a better understanding of the impact of gelatin (re-)sizing on iron gall ink corrosion. For this purpose, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) was used at the Canadian light source synchrotron (CLS, Saskatoon). This technique combines nano-scale mapping (resolution of 30 nm) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis. Fe L-edge measurements enabled to map iron distribution and to locate iron(II) and iron(III) rich areas. N K-edge measurement made it possible to map gelatin distribution. C K-edge measurements allowed mapping and discrimination of cellulose, gallic acid, iron gall ink precipitate and gelatin. Three fibers were studied: an inked fiber with no size, a sized fiber that was afterwards inked and an inked fiber sprayed with gelatin. Analysis of gelatin and ink ingredients distribution indicated a lower amount of iron inside the treated cellulosic fiber, which may explain the beneficial effect of gelatin on iron gall ink corrosion. Correctness and reliability of molar mass data by viscometry in organometallic solvents (cuen, cuoxam, cadoxen) are compromised by the alkalinity of these solvents which causes immediate depolymerization especially in the case of pulps with higher carbonyl content (oxidative damage). The viscosity values thus correspond to the molar mass after the beta-elimination reactions that underly these degradative processes, which is sometimes significantly smaller than the molar mass determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) in the non-degrading solvent system DMAc/LiCl. Despite this well-known drawback, viscosity measurements have become a standard approach for molar mass measurements due to their ease and fastness, especially in the pulp and paper industries. A potential way to reduce the inherent error of these molar mass determinations via viscosity measurements is a reductive treatment prior to dissolution of the pulp in the organometallic solvents, which converts the labile, alkali-sensitive carbonyl structures back to the respective alcohols. Using sodium borohydride (NaBH4) on different types of cellulosic pulps, we demonstrate the beneficial effects of such a reduction step on the determined degree of polymerization (DP) for all three common solvents: cuen, cuoxam and cadoxen. Molar mass distributions and profiles of carbonyl groups were determined by GPC and by carbonyl selective fluorescence labeling ("CCOA method"). Such a reductive treatment was especially valuable for hemicellulose-containing pulps. While the decreased measurement error according to the new protocol is beyond doubt, an immediate acceptance in the pulp and paper industries is at least questionable, because the new, more correct data would not agree with the old – wrong, but consistent – numbers accumulated over years and decades. In order to develop high power lithium ion batteries (LIBs), urgent requirements including adequate safety, higher current density and superior cyclic stability are proposed for separator. Tissue paper, composed of packed cellulose fibers, possesses lower production cost, easier accessibility, superior wettability together with outstanding thermostability, and is thus a candidate to be the substrate for high performance separator. To address the issue of structural failure usually encountered by single polymer as binder during long term cycling, crosslinked binder was constructed on tissue paper to adhere nano-SiO2 through chemical reactions between poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (PEI) in this work. The effects of crosslinking degree on physical properties and electrochemical performance were studied thoroughly. When the feed ratio of PVDF-HFP and PEI is fixed at 10:1, the crosslinked composite separator displays excellent electrolyte uptake and wettability, superior ionic conductivity, better interfacial compatibility as well as higher Li+ transference number (0.56), thus offering battery with prominent rate capabilities. Besides, this crosslinked composite separator exhibits satisfying dimensional stability even treated at 250 °C, better flame retardancy, enhanced mechanical behavior, wider electrochemical window and outstanding cycle stability. The prevalence of diabetes has increased over the past years. Therefore, developing minimally invasive, user-friendly, and cost-effective glucose biosensors is necessary especially in low-income and developing countries. Cellulose paper–based analytical devices have attracted the attention of many researchers due to affordability, not requiring trained personnel, and complex equipment. This paper describes a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for detecting glucose concentration in tear range with the naked eye. The paper-based biosensor fabricated by laser CO2; and glucose oxidase/horseradish peroxidase (GOx/HRP) enzyme solution coupled with tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) were utilized as reagents. A sample volume of 10 μl was needed for the biosensor operation and the results were observable within 5 min. The color intensity–based and distance-based results were analyzed by ImageJ and Tracker to evaluate the device performance. Distance-based results showed a linear behavior in 0.1–1.2 mM with an R2 = 0.9962 and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.1 mM. As a green material, cellulose is widely used in friction triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). However, the weak polarity of the cellulose fibers surface leads to its weak contact electrification performance, which is not conducive to its utilization in TENGs. In this study, epoxy chloropropane and ethylenediamine were grafted onto cellulose fibers to form paper and were assembled with an Fluorinated ethylene propylene film. The output voltage, current, and surface charge density were 34.9%, 26.7%, and 16.7% higher than those of ordinary paper, respectively. When 20% nano TiO2 filler was added to the paper made from amino-modified cellulose fibers, the output voltage, current, and surface charge density of the TENG increased by 70.9%, 226.7%, and 122.2%, respectively, compared with ordinary paper. As the air humidity of the TENG increased from 60 to 90%, the output voltage, current, and surface charge density were maintained at 53.7%, 38.9%, and 61.0%, respectively. When a 5 × 107 Ω resistor was connected to the working circuit, its output power reached 13.78 μ W cm2. We combine biodegradable plastic (polyvinyl alcohol/glycerol polymer), and cellulose-based tissue paper in a very short time (5 s) by a facile way to form a new matrix, named plastic-paper, which has high optical transmittance (~ 89%) and high optical haze (~ 90%) in broadband. Results showed that the plastic-paper is durable in different solvents, with high folding strength (over 3500 folding times) and good mechanical strength (> 30 MPa tensile strength). Interestingly, the plastic-paper presents a two-sidedness of surface morphology. The smooth side shows high light transmittance and the rough side presents high optical haze. The smooth side of the plastic-paper is successfully applied to Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED). When the rough surface of plastic-paper is used in solar cells, the maximum output power increases by 2.6% compared with bare solar cells. Parallel to the rapid growth of the population, the rate of consumption is increasing all over the world; this causes significant increases in the amount of waste. Thanks to the recycling of waste, not only environmental pollution is prevented but also a great contribution to the economy is made. One of the basic conditions for ensuring maximum performance in recycling processes is the classification of wastes according to their contents. At this stage, minimizing the human factor is an important issue in terms of time, labor, and performance of recycling facilities. In this research, paper, glass, plastic, and organic waste pictures obtained from the external environment were classified with the help of machine learning techniques. In classification, four- and five-layer deep convolutional neural networks algorithms were used. According to the results of the research, five-layer architecture was able to distinguish the wastes with a 70% accuracy rate. In the research, as the number of layers decreased, the performance values of the networks decreased. In the four-layer architecture, wastes could be separated by a rate of 61.67%. In both network architectures, the accuracy rate in differentiating plastic wastes from other wastes was found to be lower. The accuracy rate in the classification of plastic wastes was determined as 37% and 56.7% in four-layer and five-layer DCNN architectures, respectively. In the research, organic wastes were distinguished with higher accuracy compared to other wastes. A paper-based membrane coated by graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is prepared via a dip-coating method and used as a separator for sodium metal batteries with merits of low cost and environment-friendliness. Introduction of g-C3N4 effectively improves the ionic conductivity and the structural stability of the separator. Compared with traditional polyethylene separators and Al2O3-coated separators, the g-C3N4-coated separators show better electrolyte wettability, thermal stability, and electrochemical stability. Therefore, Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 battery using the g-C3N4-coated separator exhibits better cycling stability and higher rate capability. Superhydrophobic and strong cellulosic paper was fabricated in a two-step process consisting of heavy refining and dip coating with PDMS (trimethylsiloxy-terminated poly (dimethylsiloxane)) and Hf-SiO2 (hydrophobic fumed silica) solution. Results showed that the heavy refining produced extensive fibrillated fibers, which significantly increased the tensile strength. Meanwhile, the density of the paper sheet increased, and the porosity decreased. Benefiting from these changes, the subsequent dip coating operation was improved, producing paper with a very high water contact angle (WCA), yet with a low up-take of the hydrophobic solution. Finally, superhydrophobic paper sheets were fabricated with 155o WCA and 1o sliding angle (SA). Along with the unceasing growth of worldwide economic and the associated issues on resources, energy and environment, clean energy generating technologies that are based on recyclable materials, if possible, may become the future trend of development. Here, we report the design of a cheap, lightweight, and recyclable single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) that utilizes waste paper as the triboelectric material. Under the current strategy, we successfully developed green energy machines without vastly increasing the mining of various critical minerals around the world. The as-designed TENG could not only collect and convert mechanical energy into electricity with sound efficiency, but also has the merit for continuous reuse and quick construction. The maximum output power density is as high as 171 mW·m−2 at a resistance of 130 MΩ and could be integrated into a book for monitoring reading actions, thus providing a new approach to the low-cost, green and sustainable self-powered electronic systems. Cellulose-based materials are considered to be green and sustainable substitutes for plastics. However, their hydrophilicity and water instability limit further applications. Herein, ethyl cellulose (EC) and hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were employed to prepare hydrophobic SiO2@EC/P materials by dipping-spraying method. A series of cellulosic papers with various hydrophobicity (water contact angle (WCA) from about 90° to 166°, and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) less than 5°) were fabricated by varying the amount of SiO2 NPs. The dry and wet strength of the modified paper increased by 72.3% and 916.7%, respectively. Soaking test shows that the SiO2@EC/P straws remain intact after being placed in different beverages and water at the temperature of 0 to 90 °C for 2 h. Furthermore, these straws can be completely degraded after being buried into the soil for 200 days. Therefore, SiO2@EC/P materials are promising alternative materials for plastic straws. Purpose: The most abundant among the separately collected waste materials in Italy is food waste. This research aims to evaluate the influence of the type of collection bag on the food waste management chain. In Italy, the food waste collection is mainly based on bioplastic bags. As an alternative, a new type of recycled paper bag shows potential advantages. Methods: The two types of collection bag were compared evaluating the weight loss of food waste during the household storage, by means of an experimental assessment simulating the domestic dynamic bag filling. Moreover, the biomethane production of bags under anaerobic conditions was measured at the lab-scale level with Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) tests. Results: During the household storage, the breathable fabric of the paper allows for higher weight losses, ranging on average between + 29 and + 44% compared to bioplastic. BMP tests, carried out under different conditions (temperature, inoculum), showed a 2–14 times higher generation of methane by paper bags compared to bioplastic bags, when referred to 1 kg of inserted food waste. Conclusions: Collecting the food waste inside paper bags shows advantages compared to the use of bioplastic bags. First, the waste collection is benefitted thanks to the lower weight of material to be transported to treatment plants, leading also to the possibility of decreasing the collection frequency. Moreover, paper resulted more compatible than bioplastic with the anaerobic digestion treatment, which is currently rapidly increasing as a food waste management option. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The study tests the effects of data collection modes on patient responses associated with the multi-item measures such as Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System (PROMIS®), and single-item measures such as Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) measures. Methods: Adult cancer patients were recruited from five cancer centers and administered measures of anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain intensity, pain interference, ability to participate in social roles and activities, global mental and physical health, and physical function. Patients were randomized to complete the measures on paper (595), interactive voice response (IVR, 596) system, or tablet computer (589). We evaluated differential item functioning (DIF) by method of data collection using the R software package, lordif. For constructs that showed no DIF, we concluded equivalence across modes if the equivalence margin, defined as ± 0.20 × pooled SD, completely surrounds 95% confidence intervals (CI's) for difference in mean score. If the 95% CI fell totally outside the equivalence margin, we concluded systematic score difference by modes. If the 95% CI partly overlaps the equivalence margin, we concluded neither equivalence nor difference. Results: For all constructs, no DIF of any kind was found for the three modes. The scores on paper and tablet were more comparable than between IVR and other modes but none of the 95% CI's were completely outside the equivalence margins, in which we established neither equivalence nor difference. Percentages of missing values were comparable for paper and tablet modes. Percentages of missing values were higher for IVR (2.3% to 6.5% depending on measures) compared to paper and tablet modes (0.7% to 3.3% depending on measures and modes), which was attributed to random technical difficulties experienced in some centers. Conclusion: Across all mode comparisons, there were some measures with CI's not completely contained within the margin of small effect. Two visual modes agreed more than visual-auditory pairs. IVR may induce differences in scores unrelated to constructs being measured in comparison with paper and tablet. Excessive overgrowth of an invasive alien plant like Japanese knotweed is an ecological problem that threatens the ecosystem and reduces biodiversity. However, it can be potentially used for various beneficial purposes, e.g. for the production of paper or natural dyes, as a renewable and sustainable resource. In our research, the orange extract of the Japanese knotweed rhizome was used as a natural dye for the formulation of screen printing inks. The prepared printing inks with different dye concentrations were printed by flat screen printing technique on two papers made of Japanese knotweed stem and on two commercial papers as well as on cotton and polyester fabrics. The color of the prints was evaluated spectrophotometrically and the fastness of the printing inks on different printing materials was analyzed. The research results confirmed the usefulness of the natural dye derived from the Japanese knotweed rhizome for printing, especially on papers whose prints showed very good rub resistance. However, its application for printing on textiles is limited due to its lower fastness to wet treatments such as washing, wet rubbing, and wet ironing. The natural dye is resistant to fading under the influence of light, but its color becomes darker. When exposed to light, yellow prints darken to orange-brown prints, which are more pronounced at higher dye concentrations; however, this could be an interesting effect on printed products. The hemp plant Cannabis sativa Linn, referring to industrial hemp, is a high-yielding annual industrial crop grown providing fibers from hemp stalk and oil from hemp seeds. Although hemp is a niche crop, hemp production is currently undergoing a renaissance. More than 30 countries grow hemp, with China being the largest hemp producing and exporting country. Europe and Canada are also important actors in the global hemp market. Traditionally, hemp as a fiber plant has been used for the production of apparels, fabrics, papers, cordages and building materials. The hurds, as waste by-product of fiber production, were used for bedding of animals, the seeds for human nutrition, e.g., as flour, and the oil for a wide range of purposes, from cooking to cosmetics. Hemp has also been an important crop throughout human history for medicine. Other more recent applications include materials for insulation and furniture, automotive composites for interior applications and motor vehicle parts, bioplastics, jewelry and fashion sectors, animal feed, animal bedding, and energy and fuel production. Foods containing hemp seed and oil are currently marketed worldwide for both animal and human nutrition. They also find applications in beverages and in neutraceutical products. Hemp oil is also used for cosmetics and personal care items, paints, printing inks, detergents and solvents. It is estimated that the global market for hemp consists of more than 25,000 products. Currently, the construction and insulation sector, paper and textile industries, and food and nutrition domains are the main markets while the cosmetics and automotive sector are growing markets. Innovative applications, e.g., in the medical and therapeutic domains, cosmeceuticals, phytoremediation, acoustic domain, wastewater treatment, biofuels, biopesticides and biotechnology, open new challenges.
