The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of medical research is unquestionable. Nevertheless, the scientific community has raised several concerns about a possible fraudulent use of these tools that might be used to generate inaccurate or, in extreme cases, erroneous messages that could find their way into the literature. In this experiment, we asked a generative AI program to write a technical report on a non-existing Magnetic Resonance Imaging technique called Magnetic Resonance Audiometry, receiving in return a full seemingly technically sound report, substantiated by equations and references. We have submitted this report to an international peer-reviewed indexed journal, passing the first round of review with only minor changes requested. With this experiment, we showed that the current peer-review system, already burdened by the overwhelming increase in number of publications, might be not ready to also handle the explosion of these techniques, showing the urgent need for the entire community to address both the issue of generative AI in scientific literature and probably a more profound discussion on the entire peer-review process. Clinical relevance statement: Generative AI models are shown to be able to create a full manuscript without any human intervention that can survive peer-review. Given the explosion of these techniques, a profound discussion on the entire peer-review process by the scientific community is mandatory. Purpose: How to measure brain globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) accumulation in Fabry Disease (FD) patients in-vivo is still an open challenge. The objective of this study is to provide a quantitative, non-invasive demonstration of this phenomenon using quantitative MRI (qMRI). Methods: In this retrospective, monocentric cross-sectional study conducted from November 2015 to July 2018, FD patients and healthy controls (HC) underwent an MRI scan with a relaxometry protocol to compute longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) maps to evaluate gray (GM) and white matter (WM) lipid accumulation. In a subgroup of 22 FD patients, clinical (FAbry STabilization indEX -FASTEX- score) and biochemical (residual α-galactosidase activity) variables were correlated with MRI data. Quantitative maps were analyzed at both global ("bulk" analysis) and regional ("voxel-wise" analysis) levels. Results: Data were obtained from 42 FD patients (mean age = 42.4 ± 12.9, M/F = 16/26) and 49 HC (mean age = 42.3 ± 16.3, M/F = 28/21). Compared to HC, FD patients showed a widespread increase in R1 values encompassing both GM (pFWE = 0.02) and WM (pFWE = 0.02) structures. While no correlations were found between increased R1 values and FASTEX score, a significant negative correlation emerged between residual enzymatic activity levels and R1 values in GM (r = -0.57, p = 0.008) and WM (r = -0.49, p = 0.03). Conclusions: We demonstrated the feasibility and clinical relevance of non-invasively assessing cerebral Gb3 accumulation in FD using MRI. Purpose: Anti SARS-CoV-2 vaccination initially showed high effectiveness in preventing COVID-19. However, after the surge of variants of concern, the effectiveness dropped. Several studies investigated if this was related to the decrease of the humoral response over time; however, this issue is still unclear. The aim of this study was to understand whether SARS-CoV-2 anti-S IgG levels can be used to predict breakthrough infection risk and define the timing for further booster doses administration. Method: Within the framework of the ORCHESTRA Project, over 20,000 health workers from 11 European centers were enrolled since December 2020. We performed two Cox proportional hazards survival analyses regarding pre-Omicron (from January to July 2021) and Omicron (December 2021–May 2022) periods. The serological response was classified as high (above the 75th percentile), medium (25th-75th), or low (< 25th). Results: Seventy-four (0.33%) and 2122 (20%) health workers were infected during the first and second periods, respectively. Both Cox analyses showed that having high anti-S titer was linked to a significantly lower risk of infection as compared to having medium serological response [HR of high vs medium anti-S titer = 0.27 (95% CI 0.11–0.66) during the first phase, HR = 0.76 (95% CI 0.62–0.93) during the second phase]. Conclusion: Vaccine effectiveness wanes significantly after new variants surge, making anti-S titer unsuitable to predict optimal timing for further booster dose administration. Studies on other immunological indicators, such as cellular immunity, are therefore needed to better understand the mechanisms and duration of protection against breakthrough infection risk. Diagnostic testing may represent a key component in response to an ongoing epidemic, especially if coupled with containment measures, such as mandatory self-isolation, aimed to prevent infectious individuals from furthering onward transmission while allowing non-infected individuals to go about their lives. However, by its own nature as an imperfect binary classifier, testing can produce false negative or false positive results. Both types of misclassification are problematic: while the former may exacerbate the spread of disease, the latter may result in unnecessary isolation mandates and socioeconomic burden. As clearly shown by the COVID-19 pandemic, achieving adequate protection for both people and society is a crucial, yet highly challenging task that needs to be addressed in managing large-scale epidemic transmission. To explore the trade-offs imposed by diagnostic testing and mandatory isolation as tools for epidemic containment, here we present an extension of the classical Susceptible-Infected-Recovered model that accounts for an additional stratification of the population based on the results of diagnostic testing. We show that, under suitable epidemiological conditions, a careful assessment of testing and isolation protocols can contribute to epidemic containment, even in the presence of false negative/positive results. Also, using a multi-criterial framework, we identify simple, yet Pareto-efficient testing and isolation scenarios that can minimize case count, isolation time, or seek a trade-off solution for these often contrasting epidemic management objectives. Objectives: The clinical impact of brain microstructural abnormalities in multiple sclerosis (MS) remains elusive. We aimed to characterize the topography of longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) and quantitative susceptibility (χ) changes, as indices of iron and myelin, together with brain atrophy, and to clarify their contribution to cognitive and motor disability in MS. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, voxel-based morphometry, and voxel-based quantification analyses of R1 and χ maps were conducted in gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) of 117 MS patients and 53 healthy controls. Voxel-wise between-group differences were assessed with nonparametric permutation tests, while correlations between MRI metrics and clinical variables (global disability, cognitive and motor performance) were assessed both globally and voxel-wise within clusters emerging from the between-group comparisons. Results: MS patients showed widespread R1 decrease associated with more limited modifications of χ, with atrophy mainly involving deep GM, posterior and infratentorial regions (p < 0.02). While R1 and χ showed a parallel reduction in several WM tracts (p < 0.001), reduced GM R1 values (p < 0.001) were associated with decreased thalamic χ (p < 0.001) and small clusters of increased χ in the caudate nucleus and prefrontal cortex (p < 0.02). In addition to the atrophy, χ values in the cingulum and corona radiata correlated with global disability and motor performance, while focal demyelination correlated with cognitive performance (p < 0.04). Conclusions: We confirmed the presence of widespread R1 changes, involving both GM and WM, and atrophy in MS, with less extensive modifications of tissue χ. While atrophy and χ changes are related to global and motor disability, R1 changes are meaningful correlates of cognition. Objectives: Although the use of specific MRI criteria has significantly increased the diagnostic accuracy of multiple sclerosis (MS), reaching a correct neuroradiological diagnosis remains a challenging task, and therefore the search for new imaging biomarkers is crucial. This study aims to evaluate the incidence of one of the emerging neuroradiological signs highly suggestive of MS, the central vein sign (CVS), using data from Fabry disease (FD) patients as an index of microvascular disorder that could mimic MS. Methods: In this retrospective study, after the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, MRI scans of 36 FD patients and 73 relapsing–remitting (RR) MS patients were evaluated. Among the RRMS participants, 32 subjects with a disease duration inferior to 5 years (early MS) were also analyzed. For all subjects, a Fazekas score (FS) was recorded, excluding patients with FS = 0. Different neuroradiological signs, including CVS, were evaluated on FLAIR T2-weighted and spoiled gradient recalled echo sequences. Results: Among all the recorded neuroradiological signs, the most striking difference was found for the CVS, with a detectable prevalence of 78.1% (57/73) in RRMS and of 71.4% (25/32) in early MS patients, while this sign was absent in FD (0/36). Conclusions: Our results confirm the high incidence of CVS in MS, also in the early phases of the disease, while it seems to be absent in conditions with a different etiology. These results corroborate the possible role of CVS as a useful neuroradiological sign highly suggestive of MS. Purpose: Since the first Italian case of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in Lombardy (Northern Italy) Italy quickly became one of the worst-affected European countries, with a severe impact on health-care workers (HCWs). In the first epidemic, HCWs accounted for 12% of all national COVID-19 cases. We evaluated the burden of COVID-19 among HCWs and other non-health-care workers (nHCWs) in a large Italian hospital. Methods: From March 1st to May 31st 2020, we performed a retrospective study at ASST Civil Hospital, in the Province of Brescia, Lombardy. The study population included all hospital personnel (n = 9265), categorized by professional status. Results: A SARS-CoV-2 test was performed in 3572 workers (38.5%), with a positive result in 552 (5.9% of all hospital personnel). The temporal trend of SARS-CoV-2 cases in hospital staff broadly reflected that in the community, with a great majority of infections occurred during March 2020 (87.7%). From April onward, a steep decrease of positive cases was observed among hospital personnel, while in the community the decrease was much slower. Medical doctors (8.9%) and nurses (8.5%) were the most affected professional categories with a significantly higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR 1.436 and OR 1.410, respectively p < 0.0001). HCWs in COVID-19 units presented a significantly higher risk of infection compared to HCWs in non-COVID units (p < 0.001). Conclusion: HCWs were severely affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, probably associated with an overwhelming burden of work and lack of preparedness in prevention of nosocomial transmission of the infection. Central and peripheral nervous system involvement during acute COVID-19 is well known. Although many patients report some subjective symptoms months after the infection, the exact incidence of neurological and cognitive sequelae of COVID-19 remains to be determined. The aim of this study is to investigate if objective neurological or cognitive impairment is detectable four months after SARS-CoV-2 infection, in a group of patients who had mild–moderate COVID-19. A cohort of 120 health care workers previously affected by COVID-19 was examined 4 months after the diagnosis by means of neurological and extensive cognitive evaluation and compared to a group of 30 health care workers who did not have COVID-19 and were similar for age and co morbidities. At 4 month follow-up, 118/120 COVID-19 cases had normal neurological examination, two patients had neurological deficits. COVID-19 patients did not show general cognitive impairment at MMSE. In COVID-19 cases the number of impaired neuropsychological tests was not significantly different from non COVID-19 cases (mean 1.69 and 1 respectively, Mann–Whitney p = n.s.), as well as all the mean tests' scores. Anxiety, stress and depression scores resulted to be significantly higher in COVID-19 than in non COVID-19 cases. The results do not support the presence of neurological deficits or cognitive impairment in this selected population of mild–moderate COVID-19 patients four months after the diagnosis. Accurate and reproducible measurement of blood flow profile is very important in many clinical investigations for diagnosing cardiovascular disorders. Given that many factors could affect human circulation, and several parameters must be set to properly evaluate blood flows with phase-contrast techniques, we developed an MRI-compatible hydrodynamic phantom to simulate different physiological blood flows. The phantom included a programmable hydraulic pump connected to a series of pipes immersed in a solution mimicking human soft tissues, with a blood-mimicking fluid flowing in the pipes. The pump is able to shape and control the flow by driving a piston through a dedicated software. Periodic waveforms are used as input to the pump to move the fluid into the pipes, with synchronization of the MRI sequences to the flow waveforms. A dedicated software is used to extract and analyze flow data from magnitude and phase images. The match between the nominal and the measured flows was assessed, and the scope of phantom variables useful for a reliable calibration of an MRI system was accordingly defined. Results showed that the NO-HYPE phantom is a valuable tool for the assessment of MRI scanners and sequence design for the MR evaluation of blood flows. The term "biobanking" is often misapplied to any collection of human biological materials (biospecimens) regardless of requirements related to ethical and legal issues or the standardization of different processes involved in tissue collection. A proper definition of biobanks is large collections of biospecimens linked to relevant personal and health information (health records, family history, lifestyle, genetic information) that are held predominantly for use in health and medical research. In addition, the International Organization for Standardization, in illustrating the requirements for biobanking (ISO 20387:2018), stresses the concept of biobanks being legal entities driving the process of acquisition and storage together with some or all of the activities related to collection, preparation, preservation, testing, analysing and distributing defined biological material as well as related information and data. In this review article, we aim to discuss the basic principles of biobanking, spanning from definitions to classification systems, standardization processes and documents, sustainability and ethical and legal requirements. We also deal with emerging specimens that are currently being generated and shaping the so-called next-generation biobanking, and we provide pragmatic examples of cancer-associated biobanking by discussing the process behind the construction of a biobank and the infrastructures supporting the implementation of biobanking in scientific research. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2, yet limited information is available on risk factors of infection. We pooled data on occupational surveillance of 10,654 HCW who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection in six Italian centers. Information was available on demographics, job title, department of employment, source of exposure, use of personal protective equipment (PPEs), and COVID-19-related symptoms. We fitted multivariable logistic regression models to calculate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of infection. The prevalence of infection ranged from 3.0 to 22.0%, and was correlated with that of the respective areas. Women were at lower risk of infection compared to men. Fever, cough, dyspnea and malaise were the symptoms most strongly associated with infection, together with anosmia and ageusia. No differences in the risk of infection were detected according to job title, or working in a COVID-19 designated department. Reported contact with a patient inside or outside the workplace was a risk factor. Use of a mask was strongly protective against risk of infection as was use of gloves. The use of a mask by the source of exposure (patient or colleague) had an independent effect in reducing infection risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are human carcinogens, based on sufficient evidence for melanoma and limited evidence for non-Hodgkin lymphoma and breast cancer. Few data are available for liver cancer, although PCBs cause it in rats and determined liver damage in poisoned people. We investigated the association between PCB serum levels and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with a case–control study in a PCB-polluted area in North Italy. We enrolled prospectively 102 HCC incident cases and 102 age and gender-matched hospital controls. Serum concentrations of 33 PCB congeners were determined by a gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry. Of 102 HCC cases, 62 who had lost < 3 kg of body weight in past 3 years were included in the analysis (67.7% males, mean age 68 years). The odds ratio (OR) for HCC for 3rd compared to 1st tertile of PCB distribution was 1.76 (95% confidence interval 0.62–5.03) for total PCB, adjusting for socio-demographic variables and risk factors for HCC by logistic regression. For most PCB congeners, ORs > 1.5 or 2 were found, although the 95% CIs included the null value for almost all of them. This preliminary study suggests that PCBs might play a role in HCC development. We have recently identified and characterized two pseudogenes (HMGA1P6 and HMGA1P7) of the HMGA1 gene, which has a critical role in malignant cell transformation and cancer progression. HMGA1P6 and HMGAP17 act as microRNA decoy for HMGA1 and other cancer-related genes upregulating their protein levels. We have previously shown that they are upregulated in several human carcinomas, and their expression positively correlates with a poor prognosis and an advanced cancer stage. To evaluate in vivo oncogenic activity of HMGA1 pseudogenes, we have generated a HMGA1P7 transgenic mouse line overexpressing this pseudogene. By a mean age of 12 months, about 50% of the transgenic mice developed splenomegaly and accumulation of lymphoid cells in several body compartments. For these mice FACS and immunohistochemical analyses suggested the diagnosis of B-cell lymphoma that was further supported by clonality analyses and RNA expression profile of the pathological tissues of the HMGA1P7 transgenic tissues. Purpose: Different studies showed correlations between gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) administrations and dentate nucleus (DN) T1-weighted hyperintensity. The clinical impact of gadolinium retention, however, is still largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate relations between MRI and clinical disability in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS) patients.Methods: In this retrospective study, clinical data were obtained from 74 RR-MS patients at baseline and after a mean follow-up time of 3.6 years, including the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) score and its change (ΔEDSS). Patients were considered showing clinical worsening if they score a ΔEDSS ≥ 1 (for baseline EDSS ≤ 5.5) or ΔEDSS ≥ 0.5 (for baseline EDSS > 5.5). From the MRI data, the presence of bilateral DN hyperintensity was recorded along with the calculation of longitudinal relaxation rate (R1) maps.Results: Patients with DN hyperintensity showed similar ΔEDSS change compared to those without visible changes on T1-weighted images (p = 0.32). Similarly, no DN-R1 difference was found comparing stable patients with those showing a significant clinical worsening (p = 0.54). Finally, no significant effect of DN-R1 values explained the variance in ΔEDSS (p = 0.76), thus suggesting their independence from the clinical outcome.Conclusions: MS patients with DN hyperintensity show similar EDSS changes compared to subjects without DN high-signal intensity. Furthermore, mean DN-R1 values of patients with significant clinical worsening were comparable to those of stable subjects and were unrelated to clinical disability. Taken together, these findings suggest that gadolinium retention in the brain of MS patients does not affect their clinical worsening, expressed by the EDSS change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To evaluate changes in T1 and T2* relaxometry of dentate nuclei (DN) with respect to the number of previous administrations of Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCA).Methods: In 74 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RR-MS) patients with variable disease duration (9.8±6.8 years) and severity (Expanded Disability Status Scale scores:3.1±0.9), the DN R1 (1/T1) and R2* (1/T2*) relaxation rates were measured using two unenhanced 3D Dual-Echo spoiled Gradient-Echo sequences with different flip angles. Correlations of the number of previous GBCA administrations with DN R1 and R2* relaxation rates were tested, including gender and age effect, in a multivariate regression analysis.Results: The DN R1 (normalized by brainstem) significantly correlated with the number of GBCA administrations (p<0.001), maintaining the same significance even when including MS-related factors. Instead, the DN R2* values correlated only with age (p=0.003), and not with GBCA administrations (p=0.67). In a subgroup of 35 patients for whom the administered GBCA subtype was known, the effect of GBCA on DN R1 appeared mainly related to linear GBCA.Conclusions: In RR-MS patients, the number of previous GBCA administrations correlates with R1 relaxation rates of DN, while R2* values remain unaffected, suggesting that T1-shortening in these patients is related to the amount of Gadolinium given.Key Points: • In multiple sclerosis, previous Gadolinium administrations correlate with dentate nuclei T1 relaxometry. • Such correlation is linked to linear Gadolinium chelates and unrelated to disease duration or severity. • Dentate nuclei T2* relaxometry is age-related and independent of previous Gadolinium administrations. • Changes in dentate nuclei T1 relaxometry are not determined by iron accumulation. • MR relaxometry can quantitatively assess Gadolinium accumulation in dentate nuclei. Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a complex multifactorial disease characterized by genetic factors that influence the pathogenesis of the disease. In this context, an intriguing role could be ascribed to copy number variants (CNVs). We performed the whole-genome screening of CNVs in familial IgAN patients, their healthy relatives and healthy subjects (HSs). In the initial screening, we included 217 individuals consisting of 51 biopsy-proven familial IgAN cases and 166 healthy relatives. We identified 148 IgAN-specific aberrations, specifically 105 loss and 43 gain, using a new statistical approach that allowed us to identify aberrations that were concordant across multiple samples. Several CNVs overlapped with regions evidenced by previous genome-wide genetic studies. We focused our attention on a CNV located in chromosome 3, which contains the TLR9 gene and found that IgAN patients characterized by deteriorated renal function carried low copy number of this CNV. Moreover, the TLR9 gene expression was low and significantly correlated with the loss aberration. Conversely, IgAN patients with normal renal function had no aberration and the TLR9 mRNA was expressed at the same level as in HSs. We confirmed our data in another cohort of Greek subjects. In conclusion, here we performed the first genome-wide CNV study in IgAN identifying structural variants that could help the genetic dissection of this complex disease, and pointed out a loss aberration in the chromosome 3, which is responsible for the downregulation of TLR9 expression that, in turn, could contribute to the deterioration of the renal function in IgAN patients. Compelling evidence has emerged in recent years indicating that stromal cells play a critical role in disease progression. CXCR4 is a G-protein-coupled receptor with a major role in lymphocyte homing. Its ligand, CXCL12, is a highly efficient chemotactic factor for T cells, monocytes, pre-B cells, dendritic cells and myeloid bone marrow-derived cells (BMDCs). In addition, the CXCR4-CXCL12 axis plays a central role in tumor growth and metastasis. To evaluate the effect of genetic CXCR4 reduction on metastasis development, murine melanoma B16 cells were injected into the tail vein of C57BL/6 CXCR4 and CXCR4 mice in the presence of the CXCR4 inhibitor, Plerixafor (previously named AMD3100). Although lung metastases developed in wild-type CXCR4 and heterozygote CXCR4 mice, nodules were significantly smaller in the latter. CXCR4 pharmacological inhibition by Plerixafor further reduced lung metastases in CXCR4 mice, preserving the pulmonary architecture (4.18 ± 1.38 mm vs. 1.11 ± 0.60 mm, p = 0.038). A reduction in LY6G-positive myeloid/granulocytic cells and in p38 MAPK activation was detected in lungs from CXCR4 mice compared to CXCR4 mice [LY6G-positive myeloid CXCR4 vs. CXCR4 ( p = 0.0004); CXCR4 vs. CXCR4 Plerixafor-treated ( p = 0.0031)] suggesting that CXCR4 reduction on myeloid-derived cells reduced their recruitment to the lung, consequently impairing lung metastases. Our findings argue in favor of a specific role of CXCR4 expressed in stromal cells that condition the pro-tumor microenvironment. A cross-sectional case-control study was carried out to evaluate the concentrations of metallic elements in the hair of 44 children with diagnosis of autism and 61 age-balanced controls. Unadjusted comparisons showed higher concentrations of molybdenum, lithium and selenium in autistic children. Logistic regression analysis confirmed the role of risk factor for male gender and showed a slight association with molybdenum concentrations. Unconventional chelation and vitamin-mineral supplementation were ineffective on elemental hair concentrations. A meta-analysis including the present and previous similar studies excluded any association of autism with hair concentrations of mercury, cadmium, selenium, lithium and copper. To evaluate a combined biomonitoring approach based on both cobalt and tungsten determination in workers of the hard metal alloy sector. We enrolled 55 workers from a factory producing cutting tools for carpentry. Combined workroom air and biological monitoring of both cobalt and tungsten relied on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry determinations. Metals were determined on plasma, blood and urine samples. Urine samples from 34 unexposed subjects were also analyzed. Tungsten was determined in every collected sample. Workers showed significantly higher urinary tungsten levels than controls (pre-shift values of 4.12 vs. 0.06 μg/l on average; P < 0.0005). Both airborne and biological levels of tungsten prevailed among workers involved in wet-grinding activities. The element was excreted at higher urinary levels than cobalt and showed lower circulating (blood, plasma) concentrations. Exposure–dose relationships were apparent for tungsten biomarkers. Obtained results may contribute to the development of biomarkers of exposure to tungsten. The association of such biomarkers to traditional determinations of cobalt in blood and/or urine may substantially improve the exposure assessment of workers employed in cemented carbide industries. Serum levels of persistent organochlorine compounds may be predictive of their body burden, if adjusted by total serum lipids. Their value may be predicted by three different formulae, requiring only values of serum cholesterol and triglycerides. The study was aimed at: (i) evaluating the validity of these formulae; (ii) evaluating the influence of different estimates on serum levels of lipid adjusted persistent organochlorine compounds. We determined the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids by enzymatic assays on serum samples from 121 subjects living in a polluted area of Northern Italy. On the same samples and on an additional set from 69 pregnant women of the same area, we determined also polychlorinated biphenyls, hexachlorobenzene and p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene. In women, analytes were determined also on adipose tissue samples. Formulae provided results comparable to those obtained as sum of cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids. In women, we found highly significant relationships among lipid adjusted pollutant levels in serum and adipose tissue, independently from the used formula. Formulae allow a valid adjustment of organochlorine compounds in serum. The algorithm proposed by Phillips et al. provides some slight advantage over the others, in terms of simplicity of use. Objective. To apply mass spectrometry-based techniques for the determination of background levels of metabolites of widespread organic solvents, such as styrene, in unexposed subjects from the general population. Methods. The study population consisted of 129 healthy Italian subjects, not occupationally exposed to styrene (67 men; 37% smokers). Urinary levels of mandelic acid (MA) and phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA) were determined by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results. Using LC-MS/MS, we were able to detect the peaks of MA and PGA in 100% of samples. The distribution of styrene metabolites was log-normal, the geometric means of MA and PGA concentrations being 0.443 mg/g creatinine [geometric standard deviation (GSD) 2.34] and 0.107 mg/g creatinine (GSD 3.49), respectively. The reference intervals estimated for MA and PGA were 0.084–2.339 and 0.009–1.238 mg/g creatinine, respectively. Conclusion. The application of highly sensitive and selective mass spectrometry-based analytical techniques could be useful in the definition of reference values for metabolites of organic pollutants and for better assessment of low-level occupational exposure to organic solvents. In contrast with conventional single-molecule junctions, in which the current flows parallel to the long axis or plane of a molecule, we investigate the transport properties of M(II)-5,15-diphenylporphyrin (M-DPP) single-molecule junctions (M=Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn divalent metal ions), in which the current flows perpendicular to the plane of the porphyrin. Novel STM-based conductance measurements combined with quantum transport calculations demonstrate that current-perpendicular-to-the-plane (CPP) junctions have three-orders-of-magnitude higher electrical conductances than their current-in-plane (CIP) counterparts, ranging from 2.10−2 G0 for Ni-DPP up to 8.10−2 G0 for Zn-DPP. The metal ion in the center of the DPP skeletons is strongly coordinated with the nitrogens of the pyridyl coated electrodes, with a binding energy that is sensitive to the choice of metal ion. We find that the binding energies of Zn-DPP and Co-DPP are significantly higher than those of Ni-DPP and Cu-DPP. Therefore when combined with its higher conductance, we identify Zn-DPP as the favoured candidate for high-conductance CPP single-molecule devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
