This study investigates the current state of population aging in Sichuan Province, China, and proposes effective countermeasures to address this pressing issue. Through an in-depth analysis of data from the 2020 seventh population census, the research examines key aspects of population aging, including demographic profiles, self-reported health status of the elderly, primary livelihood sources, and old-age dependency ratios. The findings revealed that Sichuan Province has exceeded the national average in population aging, marking its entry into a deep aging stage. Notably, over half of the elderly population reported confidence in their overall health, and retirement pensions had become their primary income source. A comparative analysis with 2010 census data highlights evolving trends and challenges in Sichuan's population aging. Intergenerational relationships that highlight learning characteristics are created in interpersonal conflicts and lifelong education. Realizing the high-quality development of intergenerational learning has become a key problem. A primary school in eastern China united communities and families to create an efficient intergenerational learning project. This study aims to explore how this intergenerational learning is created. A principal, a teacher, two community educators, and five family members were recruited as the unstructured interview participants to collect data. This study finds that the school, community, and families play irreplaceable roles in creating intergenerational learning. Influenced by educational policies and education responsibilities, the school proactively designed the intergenerational learning project that takes grandparents to school in interaction with the community and families. Adhering to the principle of social services and age-friendly, the community provides sufficient educational resources for implementing intergenerational learning through collaborative support. Considering the generation gap and integration between grandparents and grandchildren, families as participating identities make intergenerational learning from possible imagination into real practice. This study highlights the theoretical framework of how intergenerational learning is created in school-community-family collaboration. The incidence of osteoporosis has rapidly increased owing to the ageing population. Cuproptosis, a novel mechanism that regulates cell death, may be a new therapeutic approach. However, the relevance of cuproptosis in the immune microenvironment and osteoporosis immunotherapy is still unknown. We intersected the differentially expressed genes from osteoporotic samples with 75 cuproptosis-related genes to identify 16 significantly expressed cuproptosis genes. We further explored the connection between the cuproptosis pattern, immune microenvironment, and immunotherapy. The weighted gene co-expression network analysis algorithm was used to identify cuproptosis phenotype-associated genes, and we used quantitative real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry in mouse femur tissues to verify hub gene (MAP2K2, FDX1, COX19, VEGFA, CDKN2A, and NFE2L2) expression. Six hub genes and 59 cuproptosis phenotype-associated genes involved in immunisation were identified among the osteoporosis and control groups, and the majority of these 59 genes were enriched in the inflammatory response, as well as in signal transducers, Janus kinase, and transcription pathway activators. In addition, two different clusters of cuproptosis were found, and immune infiltration analysis showed that gene Cluster 1 had a greater immune score and immune infiltration level. Further analysis revealed that three key genes (COX19, MAP2K2, and FDX1) were highly correlated with immune cell infiltration, and external experiments validated the association of these three genes with the prognosis of osteoporosis. We used the three key mRNAs COX19, MAP2K2, and FDX1 as a classification model that may systematically elucidate the complex connection between cuproptosis and the immune microenvironment of osteoporosis. We construct an overlapping generations model in which the government chooses the tax rate that determines publicly provided education and healthcare. Education increases human capital accumulation, and healthcare improves life expectancy. Each policy is financed by taxes. Two sectors of government, the public education and public healthcare sectors, uncooperatively determine the tax rates for education and healthcare that maximize the GDP per capita and an adult's welfare. Our main findings are as follows. First, the optimal tax rates for both branches of government based on per capita GDP maximization are uniquely determined. Second, in the case based on welfare maximization, there are multiple equilibria that can be ranked. The burden of osteoarthritis (OA) is rapidly increasing with population aging, but there are still no approved disease-modifying drugs available. Accumulating evidence has shown that OA is a heterogeneous disease with multiple phenotypes, and it is unlikely to respond to one-size-fits-all treatments. Inflammation is recognized as an important phenotype of OA and is associated with worse pain and joint deterioration. Therefore, it is believed that anti-inflammatory treatments may be more effective for OA with an inflammatory phenotype. In this review, we summarized clinical trials that evaluated anti-inflammatory treatments for OA and discussed whether these treatments are more effective in inflammatory OA phenotypes compared to general OA patients. Purpose: To evaluate the body of evidence of the effects of work-directed interventions on return-to-work for people on sick leave due to common mental disorders (i.e., mild to moderate depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and reactions to severe stress). Methods: The systematic review was conducted in accordance with an a priori developed and registered protocol (Prospero CRD42021235586). The certainty of evidence was assessed by two independent reviewers using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations. Results: We reviewed 14,794 records published between 2015 and 2021. Of these, eight RCTs published in eleven articles were included in the analysis. Population: Working age adults (18 to 64 years), on sick leave due to mild to moderate depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders or reactions to severe stress. Intervention: Work-directed interventions. Comparator: No comparator, Standard care, or other measures. Outcome: return to work, number of days on sick leave, income. Overall, the effects of work-focused CBT and work-focused team-based support on RTW resulted in increased or faster return-to-work compared with standard care or no intervention (low certainty of evidence). The effects of Individual Placement and Support showed no difference in RTW compared with standard care (very low certainty of evidence). Conclusion: Interventions involving the workplace could increase the probability of RTW. Areas in need of improvement in the included studies, for example methodological issues, are discussed. Introduction: Due to the increasing number of cochlear implant (CI) recipients, growing indications, and the aging population, the reimplantation of CI recipients has become a focus of attention. The aim of this study is to examine the causes, timing, and postoperative speech understanding in a large cohort over the past 30 years. Methods: A retrospective data analysis was conducted on over 4000 CI recipients and 214 reimplanted children and adults from 1993 to 2020. This involved collecting and comparing data on causes, manufacturer information, and demographic data. In addition, a comparison of speech understanding in Freiburg monosyllables and numbers before and after reimplantation was carried out. Results: Children did not exhibit elevated rates of reimplantation. The overall reimplantation rate in the entire cohort was 5%. The CI overall survival rate after 10 years in the entire cohort was 95.2%. Device failure was the most common reason for reimplantation, with 48% occurring within the first 5 years after implantation. The second most common reason was medical complications, with the risk of reimplantation decreasing as more time passed since the initial implantation. There were no significant differences in Freiburg numbers and monosyllable comprehension before and after reimplantation, both in the overall cohort and in the subcohorts based on indications. Even a technical upgrade did not result in a significant improvement in speech understanding. Discussion: There was no significant difference in the frequency of reimplantation based on patient age, especially when comparing children and adults. Device failure is by far the most common indication for reimplantation, with no significant difference in implant survival between manufacturers. Patients most often choose the same manufacturer for reimplantation. The likelihood of reimplantation decreases with increasing time since the initial implantation. The indication for reimplantation should be carefully considered, as on average, no improved speech understanding is achieved, regardless of the cause, even with a technical upgrade. The ageing of the population is one of the most significant social transformations that the twenty first century is showcasing and a challenge that impacts society at large. The elderly, inasmuch as everybody else, are confronted with continuous transformations that are induced by technology, although they seldom benefit from the opportunities that technology entails. The digital divide amongst various segments of the population is often age-related and due to different reasons, including biological, psychological, social and financial ones. There is an ongoing reflection pertaining to the factors that hinders the full adoption of ICTs by the elderly and a question regarding what can be done to overcome their poor involvement in technology. This article, based on the results of a recent research, which has been conducted in Italy, aims at highlighting the importance of engaging the elderly in the use of technology as a key to building bridges between generations. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is prevalent in the aging society. Despite body weight reduction, the prevalence of NAFLD has been increasing with aging for unknown reasons. Here, we investigate the association of DNA methylation age acceleration, a hallmark of aging, with risk of NAFLD. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiles were measured in 95 participants who developed type 2 diabetes during 4-year follow-up, and 356 randomly sampled participants from Shanghai Changfeng Study. DNA methylation age was calculated using the Horvath's method, and liver fat content (LFC) was measured using a quantitative ultrasound method. Subjects with highest tertile of DNA methylation age acceleration (≥ 9.5 years) had significantly higher LFC (7.2% vs 3.1%, P = 0.008) but lower body fat percentage (29.7% vs 33.0%, P = 0.032) than those with lowest tertile of DNA methylation age acceleration (< 4.0 years). After adjustment for age, sex, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, BMI, waist circumference, and different type blood cell counts, the risk of NAFLD was still significantly increased in the highest tertile group (OR, 4.55; 95% CI, 1.06–19.61). Even in subjects with similar LFC at baseline, DNA methylation age acceleration was associated with higher increase in LFC (4.0 ± 10.7% vs 0.9 ± 9.5%, P = 0.004) after a median of 4-year follow-up. Further analysis found that 6 CpGs of Horvath age predictors were associated with longitudinal changes in LFC after multivariate adjustment and located on genes that might lead to fat redistribution from peripheral adipose to liver. Japan’s population aging is the most advanced in the world today. No nationwide study has been conducted using small area population projection data on Japan’s aging population. This is because such projection data was unavailable for Japan before the 2016 launch of the website ‘The Web System of Small Area Population Projections for the Whole Japan’ (SAPP for Japan). SAPP for Japan opened the small-area and long-term projected population of Japan for the first time on the World Wide Web. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the future aging process using data from the SAPP for Japan and, based on this analysis, to attempt to present the standard aging process that developed countries will experience after the demographic transition, taking advantage of the fact that Japan has the most aged population in the world. Subsequently, a non-hierarchical cluster analysis was performed using two statistics on aging: the elderly population proportion and the elderly population change index, and the small areas were classified into seven clusters. Furthermore, this study examined the demographic and geographical features of the clusters, introduced a new concept of the stage in the population aging process, and analyzed the relationship between the features and the stages. To conclude, the following findings were obtained regarding the future process of Japan’s population aging. In each area of Japan, first, the total population begins to decline, second, the elderly population begins to decrease, and finally, its proportion begins to decrease. These stage shifts generally proceed earlier in areas with a higher elderly population proportion and are attributed to the reduced size of younger cohorts owing to long-term fertility decline. It is very essential in terms of flood risk management to consider social expectations such as risk perception, flood awareness, preparedness, and socio-economic dynamics together with engineering designs. Understanding the way people perceive flood risk can enhance our capability of improving existing flood risk management methods, thus helps us creating disaster resilient societies. In this study, results of a questionnaire which was used for a previous study and had been administered to participants from Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey were further investigated using statistical methods. The main aim was to understand how demographic factors such as age, gender and education level affect people's flood risk perception. It was also desired to see that whether they were aware of the parties responsible for taking mitigation measures, or whether they know about possible flood mitigation measures or not. Using the same data with the previous study, but in addition using SPSS software to do statistical analysis, questionnaire results were investigated using convenient statistical tests for each parameter, analysis results were interpreted, and conclusions were drawn. Same tests were conducted using weight coefficients adopted using a certain methodology which is explained in the paper, in order to make a better investigation. Also, results were compared with the results of the previous study. Between 2002 and 2017, concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) decreased 37% in the United States. Environmental economic theory generally assumes that environmental improvement is associated with a decrease in the marginal damage of emissions. In this case, the marginal damages of PM2.5 precursor emissions (NH3, NOX, primary PM2.5, and SO2) increased substantially. I calculate the change in the marginal damages of emissions between 2002 and 2017, finding increases, on average, of 30% for NH3, 46% for NOX, 61% for primary PM2.5, and 36% for SO2. The increase in marginal damages is especially large in the southeastern United States, with values more than double over this time period. The key factors that influence this change in marginal damages are the shape of the concentration-response (C-R) function that was adopted for these calculations between PM2.5 exposure and mortality (positive effect), the increase in the real value of a statistical life (positive effect), the increased population (positive effect), the aging of the population (positive effect), the decreased age-specific mortality rates (negative effect), and the geographic distribution of emissions (mixed effect). Between 32 and 65% of the increase in marginal damages is attributable to the shape of the C-R function and the decreased concentration of PM2.5. The C-R function adopted here indicates that the marginal effect of concentration reductions is higher at lower concentrations. Thus, at the lower PM2.5 concentrations resulting from improvements over 15 years, there would be a larger reduction in mortality from each additional unit of pollution reduction. This qualitative study investigates the factors that affect the job satisfaction of home caregivers. It draws upon a thematic analysis of data from in-depth interviews with home caregivers in the UK and finds that both visible and invisible factors have an effect. Overall factors pertaining to the way the caregiving agencies are run and behave have a significant influence on caregivers' job satisfaction. Identifying these factors will assist both policymakers and professional care agencies to be aware of the needs of caregivers in practice. In the context of global aging trends, service innovation targeting older adults is becoming increasingly crucial. Because the traditional focus areas of service innovation have predominantly been design and implementation, a significant gap in the existing literature overlooks the criticality of the testing phase. This oversight is particularly notable in relation to the unique attributes of the older adult population and their interaction dynamics with technology teams in service innovation. To bridge this lacuna, this study introduces a comprehensive framework, meticulously crafted for the testing stage of service innovation tailored to older adults. To validate this framework, a rigorous, four-year empirical research project was undertaken with one of the foremost service providers for older adults in Beijing. The findings robustly support the efficacy of the proposed framework, revealing the indispensable role of the testing phase in ensuring service innovations are aptly aligned with the needs and preferences of the aging demographic. This research enriches the discourse in service innovation, thus underscoring the imperative to integrate the testing phase as a fundamental component in the holistic approach aimed at catering effectively to an aging population. The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a mouse-sized rodent species, notable for its eusociality and long lifespan. Previously, we reported that demographic aging, i.e., the exponential increase of mortality hazard that accompanies advancing age in mammals and other organisms, does not occur in naked mole-rats (Ruby et al., 2018), a finding that has potential implications for human healthy aging. The demographic data supporting that conclusion had taken over three decades to accumulate, starting with the original rearing of H. glaber in captivity. This finding was controversial since many of the animals in that study were relatively young. In the 5 years following that study, we have doubled our quantity of demographic data. Here, we re-evaluated our prior conclusions in light of these new data and found them to be not only supported but indeed strengthened. We additionally provided insight into the social dynamics of captive H. glaber with data and analyses of body weight and colony size versus mortality. Finally, we provide a phylogenetically proximal comparator in the form of lifespan data from our Damaraland mole-rat (Fukomys damarensis) colony and demographic meta-analysis of those data along with published data from Ansell's mole-rat (Fukomys anselli). We found Fukomys mortality hazard to increase gradually with age, an observation with inferences on the evolution of exceptional lifespan among mole-rats and the ecological factors that may have accompanied that evolution. The oldest-old population, those aged ≥ 80 years, is the fastest-growing group in the United States (US), grappling with an increasingly heavy burden of dementia. We aimed to dissect the trends in dementia prevalence, mortality, and risk factors, and predict future levels among this demographic. Leveraging data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, we examined the trends in dementia prevalence, mortality, and risk factors (with a particular focus on body mass index, BMI) for US oldest-old adults. Through decomposition analysis, we identified key population-level contributors to these trends. Predictive modeling was employed to estimate future prevalence and mortality levels over the next decade. Between 1990 and 2019, the number of dementia cases and deaths among the oldest-old in the US increased by approximately 1.37 million and 60,000 respectively. The population growth and aging were highlighted as the primary drivers of this increase. High BMI emerged as a growing risk factor. Females showed a disproportionately higher dementia burden, characterized by a unique risk factor profile, including BMI. Predictions for 2030 anticipate nearly 4 million dementia cases and 160,000 related deaths, with a marked increase in prevalence and mortality anticipated among those aged 80–89. The past 30 years have witnessed a notable rise in both the prevalence and mortality of dementia among the oldest-old in the US, accompanied by a significant shift in risk factors, with obesity taking a forefront position. China's long-term sustainability faces socioeconomic and environmental uncertainties. We identify five key systemic risk drivers, called disruptors, which could push China into a polycrisis: pandemic disease, ageing and shrinking population, deglobalization, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Using an integrated simulation model, we quantify the effects of these disruptors on the country's long-term sustainability framed by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Here we show that ageing and shrinking population, and climate change would be the two most influential disruptors on China's long-term sustainability. The compound effects of all disruptors could result in up to 2.1 and 7.0 points decline in the China's SDG score by 2030 and 2050, compared to the baseline with no disruptors and no additional sustainability policies. However, an integrated policy portfolio involving investment in education, healthcare, energy transition, water-use efficiency, ecological conservation and restoration could promote resilience against the compound effects and significantly improve China's long-term sustainability. In situ zircon U-Pb geochronological and Lu-Hf isotope studies of detrital zircons from Late Mesoproterozoic to Early Neoproterozoic sedimentary units on the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block have important implications for the tectonic evolution of the Yangtze Block. The Huili Group contains zircons whose ages are mainly Late Archean to Mesoproterozoic (2 650–2 450, 2 100–1 800, and 1 350–1 150 Ma). The Dengxiangying Group has one major age population of 1 900–1 600 Ma, and two subordinate age populations of 1 350–1 100 and 2 300–2 000 Ma. Yanbian Group sedimentary rocks have a zircon age population mainly in the range of 970–850 Ma, contemporaneous with the ages of widespread arc-related magmatism in the western Yangtze Block. Combining these results with previous work, the Huili and Dengxiangying groups were most likely deposited during ca. 1 160 to 1 000 Ma in an intra-continental rift basin setting, while the Yanbian Group accumulated during >920 to 782 Ma in a back-arc basin setting at the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block. In addition, all these results further suggest a tectonic transition from a continental rift basin to a convergent environment at the southwestern margin of the Yangtze Block at 1 000–970 Ma. Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) pose significant challenges for biomedicine in the twenty-first century, particularly considering the global demographic ageing and the subsequent increase in their prevalence. Characterized as progressive, chronic and debilitating, they often result in higher mortality rates compared with the general population. Research agendas and biomedical technologies are shaped by power relations, ultimately affecting patient wellbeing and care. Drawing on the concepts of bio- and necropolitics, introduced by philosophers Foucault and Mbembe, respectively, this perspective examines the interplay between the territoriality and governmentality around demographic ageing, ND and death, focussing on knowledge production as a dispositif of power by highlighting the marginal role that the phenomenon of mortality plays in the ND research landscape. We propose a shift into acknowledging the coloniality of knowledge and embracing its situatedness to attain knowledge 'from death', understood as an epistemic position from which novel approaches and practices could emerge. Aging is a gradual and irreversible process that is accompanied by an overall decline in cellular function and a significant increase in the risk of age-associated disorders. Generally, delaying aging is a more effective method than treating diseases associated with aging. Currently, researchers are focused on natural compounds and their therapeutic and health benefits. Curcumin is the main active substance that is present in turmeric, a spice that is made up of the roots and rhizomes of the Curcuma longa plant. Curcumin demonstrated a positive impact on slowing down the aging process by postponing age-related changes. This compound may have anti-aging properties by changing levels of proteins involved in the aging process, such as sirtuins and AMPK, and inhibiting pro-aging proteins, such as NF-κB and mTOR. In clinical research, this herbal compound has been extensively examined in terms of safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics. Oxidative stress is associated with tissue dysfunctions that can lead to reduced health. Prior work has shown that oxidative stress contributes to both muscle atrophy and cellular senescence, which is a hallmark of aging that may drive in muscle atrophy and muscle contractile dysfunction. The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that cellular senescence contributes to muscle atrophy or weakness. To increase potential senescence in skeletal muscle, we used a model of oxidative stress-induced muscle frailty, the CuZn superoxide dismutase knockout (Sod1KO) mouse. We treated 6-month-old wildtype (WT) and Sod1KO mice with either vehicle or a senolytic treatment of combined dasatinib (5 mg/kg) + quercetin (50 mg/kg) (D + Q) for 3 consecutive days every 15 days. We continued treatment for 7 months and sacrificed the mice at 13 months of age. Treatment with D + Q did not preserve muscle mass, reduce NMJ fragmentation, or alter muscle protein synthesis in Sod1KO mice when compared to the vehicle-treated group. However, we observed an improvement in muscle-specific force generation in Sod1KO mice treated with D + Q when compared to Sod1KO-vehicle mice. Overall, these data suggest that reducing cellular senescence via D + Q is not sufficient to mitigate loss of muscle mass in a mouse model of oxidative stress-induced muscle frailty but may mitigate some aspects of oxidative stress-induced muscle dysfunction. The number of myocardial infarctions declined during the early COVID-19 pandemic but mechanisms behind these declines are poorly understood. COVID-19 infection is also associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction which could lead to higher incidence rates in the population. This study aims to shed light on the seemingly paradoxical relationship between COVID-19 and myocardial infarction occurrence on the population level by exploring long-term trends in incidence rates, case fatality, and proportion of patients dying before reaching a hospital. Our work is based on a linkage of administrative registers covering the entire population aged 60 + in Sweden. Considering both long-term trends since 2015 and seasonal variability, we compared observed incidence, case fatality, and proportions of patients hospitalized to expected values during 2020–2022. Despite more than 200 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases per 1000 inhabitants by the end of 2022, incidence rates of myocardial infarction continued to decline, thus following the long-term trend observed already before 2020. During the first pandemic wave there was an additional incidence decline corresponding to 13% fewer myocardial infarctions than expected. This decline was neither accompanied by increasing case fatality nor by lower shares of patients being hospitalized. We found no increase in the population-level incidence of myocardial infarction despite large-scale exposure to COVID-19, which suggests that the effect of COVID-19 on myocardial infarction risk is not substantial. Objective. To study associations between polymorphic variants of the SLC6A4 gene and depression in people aged 25–44 years old in Novosibirsk. Materials and methods. The study was performed in 2013–2016 and included 403 men (mean age 34 ± 0.4 years, response rate 71%) and 531 women (mean age 35 ± 0.4 years, response rate 72%) from an open population of residents aged 25–44 years in the Oktyabrskii district of Novosibirsk. Depression was assessed using the MONICA-MOPSY psychosocial questionnaire. The study polymorphisms of the SLC6A4 gene were genotyped using the PCR-RFLP method. Results. Depression was present in 12.8% of people aged 25–44 years (8.9% in the male population and 15.8% in the female population); moderate levels of depression occurred in 24.5% of the population (21.3% of men and 26.9% of women) (χ2 = 17.071, df = 2, p < 0.001). The most common genotype of the SLC6A4 gene in people aged 25–44 years in Novosibirsk was SLA (43.3%), followed by LALA (26.4%) and then SS (17.8%); less common genotypes in people aged 25–44 years were LALG (6.9%), SLG (4.4%), and LGLG (1.4%). Carriage of the SLA genotype (52.5% and 62.9%) increased the chance of developing both an moderate level of depression, by a factor of 2.4 (95% CI 1.278–4.355), and depression in general, by a factor of 1.9 (95% CI 1.142–3.271), as compared with carriers of the LALA genotype (31.9% and 46.7%), (χ2 = 7.674, df = 1, p < 0.01 and χ2 = 6.095, df = 1, p < 0.05). Carriers of the LALG genotype (57.9%) also had a higher chance of developing a moderate level of depression (OR = 2.929 (95% CI 1.039–8.261)) than carriers of the LALA genotype (31.9%) (χ2 = 4.326, df = 1, p < 0.05) (p < 0.05). The global population is aging at the same time as heat exposures are increasing due to climate change. Age structure, and its biological and socio-economic drivers, determine populations' vulnerability to high temperatures. Here we combine age-stratified demographic projections with downscaled temperature projections to mid-century and find that chronic exposure to heat doubles across all warming scenarios. Moreover, >23% of the global population aged 69+ will inhabit climates whose 95th percentile of daily maximum temperature exceeds the critical threshold of 37.5 °C, compared with 14% today, exposing an additional 177–246 million older adults to dangerous acute heat. Effects are most severe in Asia and Africa, which also have the lowest adaptive capacity. Our results facilitate regional heat risk assessments and inform public health decision-making. By 2050 > 23% of the global population aged 69 + will live in climates with acute heat exposure– the 95th percentile of the distribution of maximum daily temperatures–greater than the critical threshold of 37.5C, compared with 14% in 2020, an increase of 177–246 million older adults exposed to dangerous acute heat. Purpose: Intra-Discal Vacuum phenomenon (IDVP) is well-recognised, yet poorly visualised and poorly understood radiological finding in disc degeneration, particularly with regard to its role in spinal alignment. CT analysis of the lumbar spine in an aging population aims to identify patterns associated with IDVP including lumbopelvic morphology and associated spinal diagnoses. Methods: An analysis was performed of an over-60s population sample of 2020 unrelated abdominal CT scans, without acute spinal presentations. Spinal analysis included sagittal lumbopelvic reconstructions to assess for IDVP and pelvic incidence (PI). Subjects with degenerative pathologies, including previous vertebral fractures, auto-fusion, transitional vertebrae, and listhesis, were also selected out and analysed separately. Results: The prevalence of lumbar spine IDVP was 50.3% (955/1898) and increased with age (125 exclusions). This increased in severity towards the lumbosacral junction (L1L2 8.3%, L2L3 10.9%, L3L4 11.5%, L4L5 23.9%, and L5S1 46.3%). A lower PI yielded a higher incidence of IDVP, particularly at L5S1 (p < 0.01). A total of 292 patients had IDVP with additional degenerative pathologies, which were more likely to occur at the level of isthmic spondylolisthesis, adjacent to a previous fracture or suprajacent to a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (p < 0.05). Conclusions: This study identified the prevalence and severity of IDVP in an aging population. Population ageing is expected to lead to significant rises in climate risks because vulnerability rises sharply throughout people's later years. When assessing the vulnerability of older people, however, what's important isn't the number of years someone has lived (i.e. "chronological age") but rather their functional abilities and characteristics; the latter is better captured by remaining life expectancy or "prospective age". Here, we show that assessing growth in the size of older populations using a prospective rather than chronological age perspective can help avoid overestimates of future risks to climate change. Compared to an analysis based on chronological age, the projected increase in the vulnerable population share seen in the prospective age analysis is considerably lower. The differences between the two perspectives increase with age, decrease with country income level, and are larger in futures that give priority to sustainable development. Thus, while ageing certainly poses major challenges to societies facing climate change, these may be smaller than thought. Immunosenescence increases the risk and severity of diseases in elderly individuals and leads to impaired vaccine-induced immunity. With aging of the global population and the emerging risk of epidemics, developing adjuvants and vaccines for elderly individuals to improve their immune protection is pivotal for healthy aging worldwide. Deepening our understanding of the role of immunosenescence in vaccine efficacy could accelerate research focused on optimizing vaccine delivery for elderly individuals. In this review, we analyzed the characteristics of immunosenescence at the cellular and molecular levels. Strategies to improve vaccination potency in elderly individuals are summarized, including increasing the antigen dose, preparing multivalent antigen vaccines, adding appropriate adjuvants, inhibiting chronic inflammation, and inhibiting immunosenescence. We hope that this review can provide a review of new findings with regards to the impacts of immunosenescence on vaccine-mediated protection and inspire the development of individualized vaccines for elderly individuals. The establishment of aging clocks highlighted the strong link between changes in DNA methylation and aging. Yet, it is not known if other epigenetic features could be used to predict age accurately. Furthermore, previous studies have observed a lack of effect of age-related changes in DNA methylation on gene expression, putting the interpretability of DNA methylation-based aging clocks into question. In this study, we explore the use of chromatin accessibility to construct aging clocks. We collected blood from 159 human donors and generated chromatin accessibility, transcriptomic, and cell composition data. We investigated how chromatin accessibility changes during aging and constructed a novel aging clock with a median absolute error of 5.27 years. The changes in chromatin accessibility used by the clock were strongly related to transcriptomic alterations, aiding clock interpretation. We additionally show that our chromatin accessibility clock performs significantly better than a transcriptomic clock trained on matched samples. In conclusion, we demonstrate that the clock relies on cell-intrinsic chromatin accessibility alterations rather than changes in cell composition. Further, we present a new approach to construct epigenetic aging clocks based on chromatin accessibility, which bear a direct link to age-related transcriptional alterations, but which allow for more accurate age predictions than transcriptomic clocks. Among land vertebrates, the laying hen stands out due to its great reproductive efficiency: producing an egg daily all year long. This production rate makes the laying hen a special model animal to study the general process of reproduction and aging. One unique aspect of hens is their ability to undergo reproductive plasticity and to rejuvenate their reproductive tract during molting, a standard industrial feed restriction protocol for transiently pausing reproduction, followed by improved laying efficiency almost to peak production. Here we use longitudinal metabolomics, immunology, and physiological assays to show that molting promotes reproduction, compresses morbidity, and restores youthfulness when applied to old hens. We identified circulating metabolic biomarkers that quantitatively predict the reproduction and age of individuals. Lastly, we introduce metabolic noise, a robust, unitless, and quantifiable measure for heterogeneity of the complete metabolome as a general marker that can indicate the rate of aging of a population. Indeed, metabolic noise increased with age in control hens, whereas molted hens exhibited reduced noise following molting, indicating systemic rejuvenation. DNA methylation clocks estimate biological age based on DNA methylation profiles. This study developed a mathematical model to describe DNA methylation aging and the establishment of a pan-tissue DNA methylation clock. The model simulates the aging dynamics of DNA methylation profiles based on passive demethylation as well as the process of cross-sectional bulk data acquisition. As a result, this study identified two conditions under which the pan-tissue DNA methylation clock can successfully predict biological age: one condition is that the target tissues are sufficiently well represented in the training dataset, and the other condition is that the target sample contains cell subsets that are common among different tissues. When either of these conditions is met, the clock performs well. It is also suggested that the epigenetic age of all samples in the target tissue tends to be either over or underestimated when biological age prediction fails. Aging is a risk factor for human health and quality of life. Screening and development of novel supplements and medications to combat aging and delay the incidence of age-related diseases are of great significance. In this study, salidroside (SA), a primary natural small molecule from Rhodiola rosea, was investigated regarding its effects on life and healthspan and the underlying molecular mechanism(s) of anti-aging and antioxidation. Our results showed that SA effectively prolonged lifespan and exhibited anti-aging and antioxidative properties. Computer-assisted methods, label-free interaction analysis, and in vitro assays showed that SA directly bound heat shock protein 90 (HSP90). Furthermore, SA significantly inhibited the ATPase activity of HSP90, affecting the interaction between HSP90 and its interacting proteins and the expression of downstream genes to regulate lifespan and the oxidative stress response. Ageing is accompanied by a progressive decline in physiological functions. It is often argued that the rate of ageing differs between people and is 'highly individualistic'. This view is not unequivocally shared, and others have argued that the rate of ageing is rather 'uniform'. Distinguishing conclusively between these views requires longitudinal data, but these are difficult to obtain as they require decades of data collection from individuals. Here, a simple framework is proposed to assess in cross-sectional data whether in a given population the rate is 'highly individualistic' or rather 'uniform'. It is illustrated that an age-related decrease in the standard deviation (SD) of a certain parameter combined with a non-changing coefficient of variation (COVAR) reflects a 'uniform' rate of ageing, whilst an increase or decrease in COVAR with or without a concomitant increase in SD reflects a 'highly individualistic' rate of ageing. This framework is applied to some published data, focussing on muscle strength, power and physical function for the sake of illustration, and it is suggested that most studies do in fact show a 'highly individualistic' rate of ageing, perhaps apart from a 'uniform' rate of ageing in master athletes. Aging has a significant impact on the immune system, leading to a gradual decline in immune function and changes in the body's ability to respond to bacterial infections. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), also known as atypical mycobacteria or environmental mycobacteria, are commonly found in soil, water, and various environmental sources. While many NTM species are considered opportunistic pathogens, some can cause significant infections, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems, such as older individuals. When mycobacteria enter the body, macrophages are among the first immune cells to encounter them and attempt to engulf mycobacteria through a process called phagocytosis. Some NTM species, including Mycobacterium avium (M. avium) can survive and replicate within macrophages. However, little is known about the interaction between NTM and macrophages in older individuals. In this study, we investigated the response of bone marrow–derived macrophage (BMMs) isolated from young (5 months) and old (25 months) mice to M. avium serotype 4, one of the main NTM species in patients with pulmonary NTM diseases. Our results demonstrated that BMMs from old mice have an increased level of intracellular iron and are more susceptible to M. avium serotype 4 infection compared to BMMs from young mice. The whole-cell proteomic analysis indicated a dysregulated expression of iron homeostasis–associated proteins in old BMMs regardless of mycobacterial infection. Deferoxamine, an iron chelator, significantly rescued mycobacterial killing and phagolysosome maturation in BMMs from old mice. Therefore, our data for the first time indicate that an intracellular iron accumulation improves NTM survival within macrophages from old mice and suggest a potential application of iron-chelating drugs as a host-directed therapy for pulmonary NTM infection in older individuals. The increasing aging of the human population is currently and for the coming decades a major public health issue in many countries, requiring the implementation of global public health policies promoting healthy and successful aging. Individuals are not equal in the face of aging and some can present exceptional healthspan and/or lifespan, which are notably influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Research and studies on human aging, healthy aging and longevity should rely in particular on cohorts of long-lived individuals, also including biological samples allowing studies on the biology of aging and longevity. In this manuscript, we provide for the first time a complete description of the CEPH (Centre d'Etude du Polymophisme Humain) Aging cohort, an exceptional cohort recruited during the 90s to 2000s, including more than 1700 French long-lived individuals (≥ 90 years old) born between 1875 and 1916 as well as for some of them their siblings and offspring. Among the participants, 1265 were centenarians, including 255 semi-supercentenarians ([105–110] years old) and 25 supercentenarians (≥ 110 years old). The available anthropometric, epidemiologic and clinical data for the cohort participants are described and especially the collection of blood-derived biological samples associated with the cohort which includes DNA, cryopreserved cells and cell lines, plasma, and serum. This biological collection from the first cohort of centenarians in the world is an inestimable resource for ongoing and future molecular, cellular, and functional studies aimed at deciphering the mechanisms of human (successful) aging and longevity. Although aging has been investigated extensively at the organismal and cellular level, the morphological changes that individual cells undergo along their replicative lifespan have not been precisely quantified. Here, we present the results of a readily accessible machine learning-based pipeline that uses standard fluorescence microscope and open access software to quantify the minute morphological changes that human fibroblasts undergo during their replicative lifespan in culture. Applying this pipeline in a widely used fibroblast cell line (IMR-90), we find that advanced replicative age robustly increases (+28–79%) cell surface area, perimeter, number and total length of pseudopodia, and nuclear surface area, while decreasing cell circularity, with phenotypic changes largely occurring as replicative senescence is reached. These senescence-related morphological changes are recapitulated, albeit to a variable extent, in primary dermal fibroblasts derived from human donors of different ancestry, age, and sex groups. By performing integrative analysis of single-cell morphology, our pipeline further classifies senescent-like cells and quantifies how their numbers increase with replicative senescence in IMR-90 cells and in dermal fibroblasts across all tested donors. These findings provide quantitative insights into replicative senescence, while demonstrating applicability of a readily accessible computational pipeline for high-throughput cell phenotyping in aging research. Chronic inflammatory pathway activation, commonly referred to as "Inflammaging" or chronic inflammation (CI), is associated with frailty, cognitive and functional decline, and other causes of health span decline in older adults. We investigated the variability of candidate serum measures of CI among community-dwelling older adults selected for mild low-grade inflammation. We focused on serum cytokines known to be highly predictive of adverse health outcomes in older adults (sTNFR1, IL-6) during a short-term (weeks) and medium-term (months) follow-up, as well as immune markers that are less studied in aging but reflect other potentially relevant domains such as adaptive immune activation (sCD25), innate immune activation (sCD14 and sCD163), and the inflammation-metabolism interface (adiponectin/Acrp30) during short-term (weeks) follow up. We found that sTNFR1 was more reproducible than IL-6 over a period of weeks and months short-term and medium-term. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) for sTNFR1 was 0.95 on repeated measures over 6 weeks, and 0.79 on repeated measures with mean interval of 14 weeks, while the ICC for IL-6 was 0.52 over corresponding short-term and 0.67 over corresponding medium-term follow-up. This suggests that sTNFR1 is a more reliable marker of CI than IL-6. This study provides new insights into the reproducibility of serum markers of CI in older adults. The findings suggest that sTNFR1 may be a better marker of CI than IL-6 in this population. Non-isothermal cooling aging treatment (NCA) of the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy can obtain an excellent comprehensive performance. The properties of the alloy were studied by hardness, friction and wear, intergranular corrosion, spalling corrosion, and electrochemical corrosion, the microstructure of the alloy was observed by transmission electron microscopy, and the relationship between the microstructure evolution and properties of the alloy after cooling aging was analyzed. The results show that after NCA, the number of matrix precipitated phases of the 20-C120 alloy is large and uniformly distributed, and the hardness reaches 188.5 HV, which far exceeds the hardness of the T6 alloy (171.6 HV). The friction coefficient is 0.56, the weight loss is 7.2 mg, and the wear resistance is good. Grain boundary precipitated phases (GBPs) at the grain boundary are intermittently distributed and independently rounded, and width of the precipitation-free zone (PFZ) is 50.1 nm, which destroys the occurrence of corrosion and improves corrosion resistance. The intergranular corrosion depth is 42.3 μm, and the exfoliation corrosion grade is EA, and the icorr and Vcorr are 0.0026 mA/cm2 and 0.0844 mm/a, respectively. The paper empirically investigates the saving consequence of population aging, an issue that is important for policymaking and still far from uncontroversial. Rather than providing another piece of evidence to verify the positive or negative correlation between population aging and saving, the contribution of the paper is to consider the moderating role of financial development in the nexus. In a cross-country panel data setting, we find that population aging proxied by old-age dependency decreases saving, but the effect diminishes with financial development. The opposite is found for life expectancy. Financial development weakens the saving-increasing effect of life expectancy. The findings hold for different types of saving and controlling for per-capita income growth. The data suggest that life expectancy may offset the effect of old-age dependency, limiting the influence of population aging on saving. The evidence also suggests that financial development constrains the saving effect of population aging and the need to consider a country’s extent of financial development to address the saving consequence as a population ages. Population aging is discreetly reshaping the dynamics of social demand and labor supply, introducing potential turbulence to global carbon emissions. Understanding the impact of aging on carbon emissions is imperative for steering the next phase of sustainable development. This study, focusing on China, the world's largest carbon emitter, delved into the intricacies of how population aging influences carbon emissions using a dynamic panel threshold model and a mediated effects model. Geographic heterogeneity within China was also considered. On the one hand, this study incorporated three consumer-side intermediation mechanisms: energy consumption, residential consumption and medical consumption. It was found that the positive driving effect of consumption-side variables on carbon emissions was characterized by an inverted "U"-shaped change in China's highly aging regions, while an asymptotic upward trend of 7.65% was observed in regions with moderate and low aging. On the other hand, this study scrutinized three supply-side mediating mechanisms: industrial structure, R&D innovation and labor supply. The mechanism of supply-side variables on carbon emissions exhibited a shift from robustly positive driving to more nuanced weak positive driving or even negative inhibiting in highly aging regions, while inhibiting effects dominated in regions with moderate and low aging. This study offers a dual perspective encompassing both the production and consumption sides, which lays a foundation for exploring the internal mechanism of aging on carbon emission. Climate change effect mitigation is a critical priority for top leaders and communities around the globe. Human-induced environmental issues are affecting humankind's standard of living and development potential and the planetary boundaries. Sustainability objectives aim to enhance environmental quality and ensure sustainable development for all by eliminating social inequalities. This study examines the complex relationships between demographic features, foreign direct investment, technological innovation, and ecological footprint, emphasizing the relevance of population aging, population density, and urbanization in this context. The research uses a selection of emerging European economies during 1995–2018. The reasons for countries' selection are related to the increasing rate of population aging in European countries, the attractiveness for foreign direct investment, the economic growth, and the technological advancement potential these emerging countries possess. In order to investigate the long-run relationship between the selected variables, the study tests the cross-section dependence, homogeneity, and cointegration and uses Konya tests to determine panel causality. Based on Konya methodology, differences between countries in the panel are evidenced and discussed accordingly. Our findings confirm the long-run relationship between environment, technological innovation, population aging, and FDI. The results of this research are highly relevant for policymakers in selected countries for identifying the set of correlations and the relevance of various variables in such national economies. In this paper, we argue that the sociopolitical trajectory of Bronze Age of Crete was characterized by the progressive but intentional manipulation of an enduring collective ethos, notably in the organization of gatherings and feasts. These key practices, meant to ensure cohesion, took place within a larger social organization of which the constituents were formed by corporate groups that we interpret as "houses." We also argue that the nature of these houses changed over time. This process is particularly evident in the varying contexts in which these gatherings took place, with differences in terms of scale and origin of participants and variations in the balance between base-driven and imposed practices. We highlight that a landscape initially dotted with small local communities, connected through kinship bonds and shared practices at the microregional level, was progressively transformed into a homogenous, all-embracing ideological structure, which pervaded society and constituted the backbone of its hierarchical organization. Legitimized and mobilized within a religious system with clear political overtones, this process resulted into a supra-regional, global network that can rightfully be called "Minoan." This paper studies social security reforms in a model with declining population growth and increasing life expectancy. Based on simulations using data on China, it is found that a switch from a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) system to a notional defined contribution system favors the rich, causes the poor to work more, and may change the capital-effective labor ratio depending on the rate of return to personal accounts. A switch from the PAYG system to a modified PAYG system that saves part of the receipts, with the interest rate greater than the growth rate, increases labor supply and decreases the capital-effective labor ratio in period one; decreases labor supply and increases the capital-effective labor ratio after period one; and hurts the poor old more than the rich old while benefitting the poor in future generations more than the rich. Due to increased exposure to severe environmental elements and an aging population, the prevalence of skin cancer has been progressively rising in recent decades. When the type of skin infection is not identified in the early stages, it can lead to skin cancer and even death. Low-level visual characteristics directly connected to color and shape have traditionally been employed in studies on skin-lesion identification. The performance features of deep-based models profoundly made them applicable in diverse domains. Indeed, balancing the size of the deep networks with limited and unbalanced training data to meet the real-time demand in a computationally limited platform is an ongoing challenge. Often fine-tuning the last layers is performed to tackle unbalanced and shortage of data. However in the current study, layers like global average pooling, drop-block, and batch normalization are incorporated to the base models to classify unbalanced skin-lesion data. This boosts the performance of the model compared to fine-tuning with drop-out. The effectiveness of the incorporated layers are evaluated on three popular representative models having different depths. Comparisons are provided with the results obtained with conventional fine-tuning and a four-layer CNN scratch model. The best classification accuracy obtained with the proposed approach on DenseNet-121 model is 91.54%, and the average macro-F1 score obtained is 0.774. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the multi-agency identification of risk and harm in extra-familial child exploitation (CE). It explores several data prediction methods to effectively target and prevent harm. It provides a taxonomy analysis of repeat victimisation and cumulative victim harm. It also examines the relationship between age and harm and, finally, the conditional probability of repeat victimisation in exploited children. Research Question Are the most harmed exploited children referred to Multi-Agency Child Exploitation (MACE) Panels, and what other methods exist to identify and prevent high harm in child exploitation? Methods This is a descriptive quantitative statistical analysis using a whole population of children in a Northern English county, aged between 10 and 17 who were recorded in police data as either victims, offenders or MACE referrals between January 2017 and June 2018, encompassing 12,457 children. It utilises an 18-month study window, an 18-month follow-up and 18-month prior time censored period using data between 2015 and 2019 inclusive. This data identifies CE victims using CE flagging and additionally, offence classification with familial abuse and familial exploitation cases removed. It identifies repeat victims and those children referred to MACE for tailored multi-agency intervention. Application of Sherman et al.'s (Policing (Oxford) 10:171–183, 2016) Cambridge Crime Harm Index (CCHI) provided an analysis of harm in victimisation and offending. Findings Exploited repeat victims (90.7%) were not referred to MACE, and there was no significant difference in the harm they sustained in the 18 months following a repeat victimisation compared to exploited children subject to MACE. The most harmed CE victim (Victim-CCHI 15,330) in the 18-month study window was not referred to MACE, nor was the highest frequency CE victim within 18 months (31 victimisations). Exploited victims, victim offenders and MACE children are re-victimised at a significantly higher rate than other children. Exploited victims (73.4%) will not suffer a repeat victimisation of any kind. Forty-two percent of exploited repeat victims will have a third victimisation given a second, and this will attract additional mean victim harm of 464 (for comparison, penetrative sexual activity with a girl under 16 by an Offender 18 or over has a CCHI harm score of 365). Conclusion Whilst MACE provides a forum to share multi-agency information, it only does so for 9.3% of exploited repeat victims. This has implications for the role and focus of MACE. Whilst several quantitative methods were explored to predict harm in CE, this research favours the use of conditional probability and harm association. By using this method, 90.7% of missed repeat victims become visible to professionals. This is essential in providing the opportunity to minimise the risk of further victimisation and increased harm that 42% of this group will have within an 18-month period. Older adults are generally amongst the most vulnerable to heat and cold. While temperature-related health impacts are projected to increase with global warming, the influence of population aging on these trends remains unclear. Here we show that at 1.5 °C, 2 °C, and 3 °C of global warming, heat-related mortality in 800 locations across 50 countries/areas will increase by 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.5%, respectively; among which 1 in 5 to 1 in 4 heat-related deaths can be attributed to population aging. Despite a projected decrease in cold-related mortality due to progressive warming alone, population aging will mostly counteract this trend, leading to a net increase in cold-related mortality by 0.1%–0.4% at 1.5–3 °C global warming. Our findings indicate that population aging constitutes a crucial driver for future heat- and cold-related deaths, with increasing mortality burden for both heat and cold due to the aging population. This study reveals that population aging intensifies heat- and cold-related deaths, more so than climate change, in 50 countries. Reducing transportation CO2 emissions and addressing population characteristic changes are two major challenges facing China, involving various requirements for sustainable economic development. Due to the interdependence of population characteristics and transportation, human activities have become a significant cause of the increase in greenhouse gas levels. Previous studies mainly focused on evaluating the relationship between one-dimensional or multi-dimensional demographic factors and CO2 emissions, while few studies have reported on the effect of multi-dimensional demographic factors on CO2 emissions in transportation. Analyzing the relationship between transportation CO2 emissions is the foundation and key to understanding and reducing overall CO2 emissions. Therefore, this paper used the STIRPAT model and panel data from 2000 to 2019 to investigate the effect of population characteristics on CO2 emissions of China's transportation sector, and further analyzed the effect mechanism and emission effect of population aging on transportation CO2 emissions. The results show that (1) population aging and population quality restrained CO2 emissions from transportation, but the negative effects of population aging were indirectly caused by economic growth and transportation demand. And with the aggravation of population aging, the influence on transport CO2 emissions changed and presented a U-shape. (2) Population living standard on transportation CO2 emissions exhibited an urban–rural difference, and urban living standard was predominant in transportation CO2 emissions. Additionally, population growth is under a weakly positive effect on transportation CO2 emissions. (3) At the regional level, the effect of population aging on transportation CO2 emissions showed regional differences. In the eastern region, the CO2 emission coefficient of transportation was 0.0378, but not significant. In central and western regions, the influence coefficient of transportation was 0.6539 and 0.2760, respectively. These findings indicated that policy makers should make relevant recommendations from the perspective of coordinating population policy and energy conservation and emission reduction policy in transportation. Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the prospective effect of depressive symptoms on overall QoL in the oldest age group, taking into account its different facets. Methods: Data were derived from the multicenter prospective AgeCoDe/AgeQualiDe cohort study, including data from follow-up 7–9 and n = 580 individuals 85 years of age and older. Overall QoL and its facets were assessed using the WHOQOL-OLD instrument. The short form of the geriatric depression scale (GDS-15) was applied to assess depressive symptoms. Cognitively impaired individuals were excluded. Linear mixed-effects models were used to assess the effect of depressive symptoms on QoL. Results: Depressive symptoms were significantly associated with overall QoL and each of the different facets of WHOQOL-OLD, also after adjustment for time and sociodemographic characteristics such as age, gender, education, marital status, living situation, and cognitive status. Higher age and single as well as divorced marital status were also associated with a lower QoL. Conclusion: This work provides comprehensive longitudinal results on the relationship between depressive symptoms and QoL in the oldest age population. Situated in the western Sierras Pampeanas of San Luis, the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex has become a key geological locality for unraveling the construction of the western Gondwana margin on the South American tectonic plate. This study presents a comprehensive analysis, encompassing new petrological and geochronological data, along with a meticulous structural examination of two distinct regions within the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex. Our primary aim is to assess the age and provenance of the protoliths, thereby shedding light on their geodynamic evolution. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages, obtained from a quartz–feldspathic-schist paleosome within a metatexite exposure in the La Barranquita area, disclosed a polymodal distribution. The predominant age population, centered around 616 ± 11 Ma, suggests a late Neoproterozoic source (Brasiliano–Pan African orogen). A secondary, yet significant, age peak at 542 ± 12 Ma points to a late Ediacaran to Early Cambrian origin (Pampean orogen). Additionally, a peak ranging from 930 to 1144 Ma indicates contributions from an early Neoproterozoic source (Grenvillian–Sunsas orogen). The maximum depositional age was determined to be 533 ± 14 Ma, based on the calculation of the youngest grain cluster at 2σ uncertainty. This polymodal zircon-age spectrum indicates that the sedimentary protolith of the Nogolí Metamorphic Complex derived from a Cambrian-age crystalline basement situated along the western margin of Gondwana. Contrary to models invoking continent–continent collision in western Gondwana during the early Cambrian, our findings better support a ridge–trench collision as the most plausible hypothesis for the origin of the Pampean orogeny. Purpose: Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is the leading cause of CRC deaths, however, the relative epidemiological research was insufficient. We aimed to analyze the patterns and trends of mortality of mCRC in Shanghai with a more complete system for monitoring the cause of death of the population and find potential methods to reduce the burden of CRC in China. Methods: Mortality data from 2005 to 2021 of mCRC deaths were obtained from the mortality registration system in Shanghai. We analyzed the crude mortality rates, age-standardized mortality rates, and rates of years of life lost (YLL rates) of mCRC. In addition, the trends were quantified using Joinpoint Regression software. Results: A total of 4,386 mCRC deaths were included, with 1,937 (44.16%) liver metastases and 1,061 (24.19%) lung metastases. The crude mortality rate and age-standardized mortality rate of mCRC were 9.09 per 105 person-years and 3.78 per 105 person-years, respectively. The YLL was 50,533.13 years, and the YLL rate was 104.67 per 105 person-years. The overall annual crude mortality rate of mCRC increased by 1.47% (95% CI 0.28–2.68%, P < 0.001) from 2005 to 2021. The crude mortality rate of mCRC increased by 3.20% per year (95% CI 1.80–4.70%, P < 0.001) from 2005 to 2013, but the trend of mortality growth remained stable from 2013 to 2021. The YLL rates remained stable between 2005 and 2021. Conclusions: Population aging was the most likely factor responsible for the increase in CRC mortality in Pudong. Physical examinations and screenings for the elderly were possible reasons for reducing the burden of CRC in fast-growing regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
