Rectal prolapse is characterized by a full-thickness intussusception of the rectal wall and is associated with a spectrum of coexisting anatomic abnormalities. We developed the transabdominal levatorplasty technique for laparoscopic rectopexy, inspired by Altemeier's procedure. In this method, following posterior mesorectum dissection, we expose the levator ani muscle just behind the anorectal junction. Horizontal sutures, using nonabsorbable material, are applied to close levator diastasis associated with rectal prolapse. The aim of the transabdominal levatorplasty is to (i) reinforce the pelvic floor, (ii) narrow the anorectal hiatus, and (iii) reconstruct the anorectal angle. We report a novel transabdominal levatorplasty technique during laparoscopic rectopexy for rectal prolapse. The laparoscopic mesh rectopexy with levatorplasty technique was performed in eight cases: six underwent unilateral Orr–Loygue procedure, one modified Wells procedure, and one unilateral Orr–Loygue procedure combined with sacrocolpopexy for uterine prolapse. The median follow-up period was 178 (33–368) days, with no observed recurrences. Six out of seven patients with fecal incontinence experienced symptomatic improvement. Although the sample size is small and the follow-up period is short, this technique has the potential to reduce the recurrence rate and improve functional outcomes, as with levatorplasty of Altemeier's procedure. This article discusses a new surgical technique for robotic right hemicolectomy, a procedure used to treat colon cancer. The technique, called the double bipolar method, eliminates the need for patient repositioning and instrument exchange, making the surgery simpler and safer. The method uses specialized forceps and a third arm for retraction, and vessel clipping by an assistant surgeon further facilitates the procedure. The near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 space mission, was observed via both orbiter and the lander instruments. The infrared radiometer on the MASCOT lander (MARA) is the only instrument providing spectrally resolved mid-infrared (MIR) data, which is crucial for establishing a link between the asteroid material and meteorites found on Earth. Earlier studies revealed that the single boulder investigated by the lander belongs to the most common type found on Ryugu. Here we show the spectral variation of Ryugu's emissivity using the complete set of in-situ MIR data and compare it to those of various carbonaceous chondritic meteorites, revealing similarities to the most aqueously altered ones, as well as to asteroid (101955) Bennu. The results show that Ryugu experienced strong aqueous alteration prior to any dehydration. Spectral characteristics can be used to link asteroid and meteorite materials. Objectives: Fluid imbalance due to sodium retention and malnutrition can be characterized by the ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to intracellular water (ICW). We investigated whether the ECW/ICW ratio is a risk factor for adverse outcomes. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting and Participants: 149 patients with chronic kidney disease from 2005 to 2009, who were followed until August 2013. Measurements: Body fluid composition was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Patients were categorized according to the ECW/ICW ratio tertile. Daily nutrient intake was estimated from 24-h dietary recall and analyzed using standard food composition tables. The main outcomes were adverse renal outcomes, as defined by a decline of 50% or more from the baseline glomerular filtration rate or initiation of renal replacement therapy, cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality. Results: The ECW/ICW ratio increased with downward ICW slope with age and renal dysfunction besides ECW excess with massive proteinuria. Sodium intake, protein intake, and calorie intake were negatively correlated with the ECW/ICW ratios due to the steeper decreasing ICW content with the decreased dietary intake than the decreasing ECW content. During a median 4.9-year follow up, patients in the highest tertile had the worst adverse renal outcomes (15.9 vs. 5.1 per 100 patient-years, P <0.001), cardiovascular events (4.1 vs. 0.3 per 100 patient-years, P = 0.002), and mortality (11.2 vs. 1.3 per 100 patient-years, P <0.001). The adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence intervals) for adverse renal outcomes, cardiovascular events, and mortality were 1.15 (1.03-1.26), 1.12 (0.93-1.31), and 1.29 (1.11-1.50), respectively. Conclusion: Fluid imbalance between ICW and ECW occurring in malnourished and elderly patients with chronic kidney disease may explain the reserve capacity for volume overload and is associated with adverse renal outcomes and all-cause mortality. Aim: To discuss the chronological changes observed in a national survey of neonatal surgery in Japan performed every 5 years by the Committee in the Japanese Society of Pediatric Surgeons.Methods: We analyzed the data obtained for 20 years from 1993 to 2013 and herein report the chronological changes.Results: The number of summarized cases was least in 1993, with 2806 cases, and subsequently increased to 3753 cases in 2013. The mortality rate among the patients with maternal transport linearly decreased (p = 0.0386). Although the proportion of extremely low birth weight infants linearly increased (p = 0.0014), with an annual rate of +0.39 %, the mortality rate linearly decreased (p = 0.0010), with an annual rate of -1.68 %. Moreover, the overall mortality rate linearly decreased (p = 0.0002), with an annual rate of -0.26 %. Most diseases were observed to exhibit a decline in the mortality rate with the same trend as overall mortality. The decline in the mortality rate was most robust with respect to congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The mortality rates, except for that of CDH, omphalocele, esophageal atresia, and intestinal perforation, declined to 5 % or lower by 2013.Conclusions: The present findings may be the result of remarkable progress in perinatal management. The effect of in situ addition of potassium permanganate (KMnO) in controlling morphology, composition, structural and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures prepared by hydrothermal technique has been investigated. The influence of synthesis conditions on the growth of ZnO nanorods was meticulously studied by field-emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. It is demonstrated that the KMnO concentration has great influence on the morphology and on the alignment of ZnO nanorods. Further the optical properties of nanostructures were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The PL spectrum divulged a continuous suppression of defect-related broadband emission by increasing the concentration of the KMnO, which produced the quenching of surface defects present in the nanorods. The intensity ratio of the peaks corresponding to near-band emission (NBE) to that of deep-level emission of the KMnO-modified ZnO nanorods was found to increase by eightfold of magnitude. Further it must be noted that nearly 17-fold enhancement in the PL emission of the peak corresponding to NBE was observed in KMnO-modified ZnO compared to the ZnO grown without any additive. The I-V plot showed dependence of current values under dark and illumination over the amount of KMnO added during the growth stage. Purpose: The effects of astaxanthin (Ax) on the in vitro development of bovine embryos cultured under heat stress were investigated in combination with the assessment of its cellular accumulation and action on mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Methods: Bovine ≥8-cell embryos were collected on day 3 after in vitro fertilization and exposed to single (day 4) or repeated (day 4 and 5) heat stress (10 h/day at 40.5 °C). Ax was added into culture medium under the repeated heat stress and blastocyst development was evaluated. The cellular uptake of Ax in embryos was examined using bright-field and confocal laser-scanning microscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography. The relationship between Ax and mitochondria localization was assessed using MitoTracker dye. The effects of Ax on ΔΨm were investigated using JC-1 dye. Results: Blastocyst development in the repeated heat stress treatment decreased significantly ( P < 0.05) compared with those in single heat stress or normal thermal treatment. The addition of Ax into culture medium did lead to a significant recovery in blastocyst development in the repeated heat-treated group. Ax was detected in cytoplasm of embryos and observed to colocalize with mitochondria. Ax recovered ΔΨm in embryos that was decreased by the heat treatment. Conclusions: Ax ameliorated the heat stress-induced impairment of blastocyst development. Objectives: To investigate the diagnostic capability of anterior temporal lobe white matter abnormal signal (ATLAS) for determining seizure focus laterality in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) by comparing different MR sequences.Methods: This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board and written informed consent was obtained. Three 3D sequences (double inversion recovery (DIR), fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and T2-weighted imaging (T2WI)) and two 2D sequences (FLAIR and T2WI) were acquired at 3 T. Signal changes in the anterior temporal white matter of 21 normal volunteers were evaluated. ATLAS laterality was evaluated in 21 TLE patients. Agreement of independent evaluations by two neuroradiologists was assessed using κ statistics. Differences in concordance between ATLAS laterality and clinically defined seizure focus laterality were analysed using McNemar's test with multiple comparisons.Results: Pre-amygdala high signals (PAHS) were detected in all volunteers only on 3D-DIR. Inter-evaluator agreement was moderate to almost perfect for each sequence. Correct diagnosis of seizure laterality was significantly more frequent on 3D-DIR than on any other sequences (P ≤ 0.031 for each evaluator).Conclusions: The most sensitive sequence for detecting ATLAS laterality was 3D-DIR. Adhesive small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common cause of abdominal pain after surgery or peritonitis. The role of computed tomography (CT) in the evaluation of SBO has expanded. Diagnosis of adhesive SBO, however, remains challenging. Adhesions causing SBO are classified as either matted adhesions or single adhesive bands, and both types have different mechanisms that lead to SBO. In patients with matted adhesions, SBO results from angulation and kinking or from torsion of the intestines. In patients with adhesive bands, SBO results from compression of the intestine caused by the band itself. Recent advances in spatial resolution using multidetector CT (MDCT) have enabled detailed assessment of the configuration of the SBO site. Objectives: To detect symptomatic hemispheres during the postoperative course of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) using arterial spin labelling (ASL).Methods: Eighteen patients with aneurysmal SAH were included; four exhibited symptomatic vasospasm postoperatively. All patients underwent ASL on days 9-10 (single time-point ASL). Nine patients underwent serial measurements of ASL (serial ASL) on days 1-2, 9-10 and 13-21, and seven patients also underwent imaging on days 4-7. CBF in the posterior part of the MCA territory was measured, and the ipsilateral/contralateral ratio of CBF was calculated. Differences between symptomatic hemispheres and others underwent ROC analysis.Results: Single time-point ASL revealed that CBF(day9-10) and CBF(i/c_day9-10) were significantly lower in symptomatic hemispheres than in asymptomatic hemispheres (P < 0.001). Serial ASL was significantly decreased on CBF(day4-7) compared with CBF(day1-2) and on CBF(day9-10) compared with CBF(day4-7), and significantly increased on CBF(day13-21) compared with CBF(day9-10). ROC analysis of single time-point ASL revealed that AUC for CBF(day9-10) was 0.95, significantly higher than CBF(i/c_day9-10) (P < 0.001). ROC analysis of serial ASL showed that AUC for CBF(day9-10) was 0.93 and significantly higher than CBF(day9-10/day1-2) and CBF(i/c_day9-10) (P < 0.001).Conclusions: Single time-point ASL revealed significant CBF reduction in symptomatic hemispheres compared with asymptomatic hemispheres. Blunt traumatic abdominal aortic dissection is extremely rare and potentially deadly. We present the case of a 62-year-old man involved in a frontal car crash. After emergency undergoing laparotomy for bowel injuries, he was referred to our hospital due to acute ischemia of bilateral lower extremities on day 3 after the trauma. Computed tomography and aortography showed an aortobiiliac dissection with complete occlusion. This injury was successfully treated by endovascular treatment with "kissing"-technique stent placement, which appears to be a safe, effective, and minimally invasive treatment. An environmental vibration problem occurred at a house near a highway bridge on soft ground. Vibration experiments with a test truck were performed to investigate the cause of the problem and the vibration characteristics of the bridge and house. Experimental results showed that the house was resonating with the bridge. As a measure to reduce vibration, viscoelastic dampers were installed at the ends of the bridge girders. The effectiveness of this measure was evaluated by comparing the data gathered before and after the installation of the dampers using ordinary trucks running over the bridge. Moreover, a dynamic response analysis was carried out to investigate the vibration reduction as a function of the number of installed dampers as well as the various analytical conditions employed. Simulation results showed that the vibration reduction depends on the boundary condition, running position, and torsion modes that have a coupling vibration between the superstructure and the piers. T cells recognize tumor-associated antigens under the condition of lymphopenia-induced homeostatic proliferation (HP); however, HP-driven antitumor responses gradually decay in association with tumor growth. Type I interferon (IFN) has important roles in regulating the innate and adaptive immune system. In this study we examined whether a tumor-specific immune response induced by IFN-α could enhance and sustain HP-induced antitumor immunity. An intratumoral IFN-α gene transfer resulted in marked tumor suppression when administered in the early period of syngeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (synHSCT), and was evident even in distant tumors that were not transduced with the IFN-α vector. The intratumoral delivery of the IFN-α gene promoted the maturation of CD11c+ cells in the tumors and effectively augmented the antigen-presentation capacity of the cells. An analysis of the cytokine profile showed that the CD11c+ cells in the treated tumors secreted a large amount of immune-stimulatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-6. The CD11c+ cells rescued effector T-cell proliferation from regulatory T-cell-mediated suppression, and IL-6 may have a dominant role in this phenomenon. The intratumoral IFN-α gene transfer creates an environment strongly supporting the enhancement of antitumor immunity in reconstituted lymphopenic recipients through the induction of tumor-specific immunity and suppression of immunotolerance. Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common form of the progressive muscular dystrophies characterized by defects of the dystrophin gene. Although primarily characterized by degeneration of the limb muscles, cardiomyopathy is a major cause of death. Therefore, the development of curative modalities such as gene therapy is imperative. We evaluated the cardiomyopathic features of mdx mice to observe improvements in response to intravenous administration of recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) type 9 encoding microdystrophin. The myocardium was extensively transduced with microdystrophin to significantly prevent the development of fibrosis, and expression persisted for the duration of the study. Intraventricular conduction patterns, such as the QRS complex duration and S/R ratio in electrocardiography, were also corrected, indicating that the transduced microdystrophin has a protective effect on the dystrophin-deficient myocardium. Furthermore, BNP and ANP levels were reduced to normal, suggesting the absence of cardiac dysfunction. In aged mice, prevention of ectopic beats as well as echocardiographic amelioration was also demonstrated with improved exercise performance. These findings indicate that AAV-mediated cardiac transduction with microdystrophin might be a promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of dystrophin-deficient cardiomyopathy. We investigated a simple and productive micromachining method of silica glass by ablation using a TEA CO laser (10.6 μm) with a spatial resolution down to sub-wavelength scale. The silica glass was irradiated by the TEA CO laser light through a copper grid mask with square apertures of 20×20 μm attached to the silica glass surface. After the irradiation, circular holes with a diameter of several μm were formed on the silica glass surface at the centers of the apertures due to the Fresnel diffraction effect. The minimum diameter of the holes was 3.4 μm. The characteristics of the micromachining are discussed based on the electric field distributions of the CO laser light under the mask using a three-dimensional full-wave electromagnetic field simulation. Single-crystalline ZnO nanowires on a sapphire substrate have been synthesized by a nanoparticle-assisted pulsed-laser deposition (NAPLD) using a pure and SbO doped ZnO target. Low density and vertically well-aligned ZnO nanowires were grown on hexagonal cone-shape ZnO cores by introduction of a ZnO buffer layer. More than 90% of the ZnO cores of the Sb-induced ZnO nanowires are formed in the same size of 400 nm. The ZnO nanowires consist of single-crystalline wurtzite ZnO crystal and grow along [0001] direction. The room-temperature photoluminescence spectrum exhibited a strong ultraviolet emission at around 380 nm and a relatively low broad band emission in the visible region, indicating a low concentration of structural defect in the nanowires. Sb can be used as one of the effective additives to control the morphology and alignment of ZnO nanowires synthesized by NAPLD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents the clinical and radiological results of the modified spinous process osteotomy decompressive procedure (MSPO), which affords excellent visualisation and provides wide access for Kerrison rongeur use and angulation while minimising destruction of tissues not directly involved in the pathological process. A total of 50 patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis underwent MSPO between 2002 and 2005. The minimum follow-up period was five years. Patient's walking distance ability was 85.4 m (5-180 m) preoperatively and 2,560 m (1500-8000 m) at the last follow-up. Leg pain improved in 100% of the patients and back pain improved in 89% at the last follow-up. The overall results were good to excellent in 90% of the patients, fair in 16% and all patients were satisfied with the outcome at the last follow-up. The osteotomised spinous process eventually united with the retained laminar bridge in all patients within nine months after surgery. Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis can be adequately decompressed with less violation of the integrity of the posterior elements using MSPO. The described technique of MSPO yielded promising results with few complications. Background/Objectives:Subcutaneous adipose tissue grows rapidly during the first months of life. Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) has a quantitatively important function in adipose tissue fat accumulation and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) is a determinant of neonatal growth. Recent studies showed that LPL mass in non-heparinized serum (LPLm) was an index of LPL-mediated lipolysis of plasma triacylglycerol (TG). The objective was to know the influence of serum LPL and IGF-I on neonatal subcutaneous fat growth, especially on catch-up growth in low birth weight infants.Subjects/Methods:We included 47 healthy neonates (30 males, 17 females), including 7 small for gestational age. We measured serum LPLm and IGF-I concentrations at birth and 1 month, and analyzed those associations with subcutaneous fat accumulation.Results:Serum LPLm and IGF-I concentrations increased markedly during the first month, and positively correlated with the sum of skinfold thicknesses both at birth (r=0.573, P=0.0001; r=0.457, P=0.0035) and at 1 month (r=0.614, P<0.0001; r=0.787, P<0.0001, respectively). In addition, serum LPLm concentrations correlated inversely to very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-TG levels (r=−0.692, P<0.0001 at birth; r=−0.429, P=0.0052 at 1 month). Moreover, the birth weight Z-score had an inverse association with the postnatal changes in individual serum LPLm concentrations (r=−0.639, P<0.0001).Conclusions:Both serum LPLm and IGF-I concentrations were the determinants of subcutaneous fat accumulation during the fetal and neonatal periods. During this time, LPL-mediated lipolysis of VLDL-TG may be one of the major mechanisms of rapid growth in subcutaneous fat tissue. Blunt gallbladder injury is rare, and bleeding from the cystic artery due to blunt trauma is even rarer. We report herein a case of extraluminal bleeding of the gallbladder in a patient following blunt abdominal trauma. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed pericholecystic fluid and extravasation of contrast material in the subcapsular liver space adjacent to the gallbladder. Abdominal digital subtraction angiography revealed pseudoaneurysm originating from a branch of the cystic artery. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether pulmonary embolus volume (PEV) obtained with multi-detector row computed tomography is related to clinical status and outcomes.Materials and Methods: Subjects comprised 48 patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PTE). PEV was measured by tracing the contours manually and compared between sets of two groups divided by clinical status. Correlations of PEV to blood gases and D-dimer levels were investigated. PEV was tested as a predictor of clinical probability of acute PTE using Wells' criteria and as a predictor of survival after PTE by logistic regression analysis.Results: The PEV was greater in groups with respiratory symptoms (P < 0.001), PTE as pretest clinical diagnosis (P = 0.027), and heart rate >100 beats/min (P < 0.001). It was smaller in subjects with concurrent malignancy (P = 0.02). It was correlated with PaCO(2) (P = 0.04, rho = -0.37) and the D-dimer level (P = 0.002, rho = 0.46); it was not a predictor of clinical probability of acute PTE or survival after PTE. The survival rate did not differ between groups with PEV > 10 ml (8/9) or Conclusion: The PEV in acute PTE may relate to the presence of respiratory symptoms, hypocapnia, and tachycardia. Spin transition has attracted the interest of researchers in various fields since the early 1930s, with thousands of examples now recognized, including those in minerals and biomolecules. However, so far the metal centres in which it has been found to occur are almost always octahedral six-coordinate 3d4 to 3d7 metals, such as Fe(II). A five-coordinate centre is only rarely seen. Here we report that under pressure SrFe(II)O2, which features a four-fold square-planar coordination, exhibits a transition from high spin (S = 2) to intermediate spin (S = 1). This is accompanied by a transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating state to a ferromagnetic so-called half-metallic state: only half of the spin-down (dxz,dyz) states are filled. Three dimensional (3D) whole-heart (WH) coronary MR angiography (CMRA) requires an extended imaging time, but it may be reduced by providing a subject with visual feedback (VFB). Thirteen healthy volunteers were scanned and quality of 3D WH-CMRA images was compared among three scan conditions: free breathing (FB) with and without VFB (FB + VFB and FB - VFB, respectively) and multiple breath-holds with VFB (MBH + VFB). All but two subjects were able to complete all scans. The average scan times were 10.0 +/- 2.2, 10.0 +/- 2.5, and 8.2 +/- 1.3 min for FB - VFB, FB + VFB, and MBH + VFB, respectively. In the MBH + VFB condition, scan time was significantly reduced by 18% compared with both FB scans. No significant difference in image quality was observed between the FB - VFB and MBH + VFB conditions, but scores were significantly deteriorated at some segments in the FB + VFB condition. Interleukin-10 (IL-10) ameliorates various T-helper type 1 cell-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases. Although the therapeutic benefits of IL-10 include antiatherosclerotic effects, pathophysiological effects of IL-10 on vascular remodeling in hypertension have not yet been elucidated. These studies were designed to determine whether sustained IL-10 expression, mediated by an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector, prevents vascular remodeling and target-organ damage in the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR-SP)—an animal model of malignant hypertension. A single intramuscular injection of an AAV1 vector encoding rat IL-10 introduced long-term IL-10 expression. These IL-10-transduced rats had decreased stroke episodes and proteinuria, resulting in improved survival. Histological examination revealed a reduced level of deleterious vascular remodeling of resistance vessels in the brain and kidney of these rats. Immunohistochemical analysis indicated that IL-10 inhibited the enhanced renal transforming growth factor-β expression and perivascular infiltration of monocytes/macrophages and nuclear factor-κB-positive cells normally observed in the SHR-SP. Four weeks after IL-10 vector injection, systolic blood pressure significantly decreased and this effect persisted for several months. Overall, AAV vector-mediated systemic IL-10 expression prevented vascular remodeling and inflammatory lesions of target organs in the SHR-SP. Purpose: The ground-glass opacity (GGO) of lung cancer is identified only subjectively on computed tomography (CT) images as no quantitative characteristic has been defined for GGOs. We sought to define GGOs quantitatively and to differentiate between GGOs and solid-type lung cancers semiautomatically with a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD).Methods and Materials: High-resolution CT images of 100 pulmonary nodules (all peripheral lung cancers) were collected from our clinical records. Two radiologists traced the contours of nodules and distinguished GGOs from solid areas. The CT attenuation value of each area was measured. Differentiation between cancer types was assessed by a receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.Results: The mean CT attenuation of the GGO areas was -618.4 +/- 212.2 HU, whereas that of solid areas was -68.1 +/- 230.3 HU. CAD differentiated between solidand GGO-type lung cancers with a sensitivity of 86.0% and specificity of 96.5% when the threshold value was -370 HU. Four nodules of mixed GGOs were incorrectly classified as the solid type. CAD detected 96.3% of GGO areas when the threshold between GGO and solid areas was 194 HU.Conclusion: Objective definition of GGO area by CT attenuation is feasible. Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires were successfully grown on the sapphire substrate by nanoparticle-assisted pulsed laser deposition (NAPLD), which were employed in fabricating the ZnO nanowire-based heterojunction structures. p-GaN/ n-ZnO heterojunction light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with embedded ZnO nanowires were obtained by fabricating p-GaN:Mg film/ZnO nanowire/ n-ZnO film structures. The current–voltage measurements showed a typical diode characteristic with a threshold voltage of about 2.5 V. Electroluminescence (EL) emission having the wavelength of about 380 nm was observed under forward bias in the heterojunction diodes and was intensified by increasing the applied voltage up to 30 V. Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires have been successfully synthesized on c-cut sapphire substrates by a catalyst-free nanoparticle-assisted pulsed-laser ablation deposition (NAPLD) in Ar and N2 background gases. In NAPLD, the nanoparticles formed in the background gas by laser ablation are used for the growth of the nanowires. The surface density of the nanowires can be controlled by varying the density of nanoparticles, which is in turn achieved by varying ablation laser parameters such as the energy and the repetition rate. When single ZnO nanowire synthesized in a N2 background gas was excited by 355 nm laser-pulse with a pulse-width of 8 ns, stimulated emission was clearly observed, indicating high quality of the nanowire. The dynamics of debris from the laser-produced tin (Sn) plasma was investigated for an extreme ultraviolet light source in order to establish the guideline for the optimum design of a mitigation system, such as a mass-limited target. The dissemination of the Sn atoms from the different shapes of a wire and a mass-limited droplet target were investigated using the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) imaging method. The Sn droplet targets with a diameter in the range of 5 to 17 μm were prepared by a new droplet generating technique using a pulsed laser. There was a large difference in the angular distribution of Sn atoms in the plane parallel and perpendicular to the wire axis, indicating the curvature of the target surface governed the angular distribution of the ablated species. The spatial distributions of Sn atoms from the droplet targets were similar to those from the curved surface of the wire targets. The dynamics of the microplasmas created at a transparent solid–solid interface were investigated extensively. Microplasmas were generated at an interface between a carbon (C) or a germanium (Ge) target and a SiO2 substrate by irradiating a KrF excimer laser beam onto the target, and the dynamics of the plasmas were investigated with the aid of optical emission spectroscopy. Although the emission spectra that contained the characteristic emission lines and the absorption bands originated from C and Ge species were observed from the C and Ge plasmas without the SiO2 substrate, identical spectra were obtained from both the plasmas created at the C–SiO2 and Ge–SiO2 interfaces. Furthermore, the target and the Si substrate surfaces were examined with a scanning electron microscope. The SiO2 substrate was smoothly etched and a nanostructure of a chain-like morphology was also observed in the deposits on the SiO2 substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The microstructures of femtosecond laser-induced ripples formed on a 4H–SiC single-crystal surface were studied by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with particular attention on the crystal structure underlying fine and coarse ripples differing in period and morphology. Conventional and high-resolution TEM analyses showed that a continuous amorphous layer approximately 10 to 50 nm thick covers the topmost region of both fine and coarse ripples. These results strongly suggest that the fundamental surface deformation process is common for the entire region of fine and coarse ripples, even though the factors that determine their periods are different. We describe a comparative study of the emission characteristics of debris from CO2 and Nd:YAG laser-produced tin plasmas for developing an extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) lithography light source. Tin (Sn) ions and droplets emitted from a Sn plasma produced by a CO2 laser or an Nd:YAG laser were detected using Faraday cups and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) detectors, respectively. The droplets were also monitored by using silicon substrates as witness plates. The results showed higher ion kinetic energy and lower particle emission for the CO2 laser than the Nd:YAG laser for the same laser energy (50 mJ). The average ion energy was 2.2 keV for the CO2 laser-produced plasma (LPP), and 0.6 keV for the Nd:YAG LPP. The debris accumulation of the CO2 LPP detected by the QCM detectors, however, was less than one fourth of that of the Nd:YAG LPP for the same laser energy. Using ion energy data, the mirror lifetime is estimated for the CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers. In both cases, the upper limit of the number of shots was of the order of 106. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective:To investigate natural change of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) profile during the neonatal period and the impact of gestational age and birth weight on those changes.Study Design:We measured lipid composition in LDL fraction, LDL particle size and apolipoprotein B (apoB) concentration at birth, 5 days of age and 1 month of age in 63 healthy neonates that had 37 to 41-week gestational age.Result:Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apoB concentrations increased from birth to 5 days of age, and the concentration persisted at 1 month in breast-fed and mixed-fed infants. However, in formula-fed infants, the concentration decreased at 1 month. At 5 days of age, neonates had larger and more triglyceride (TG)-rich LDL particles than at birth. At 1 month of age, LDL particles were smaller and more cholesterol rich than at 5 days of age. Single regression analyses showed that gestational age had influenced the LDL profile at birth and 5 days of age, while at 1 month milk determined the profile.Conclusion:The number of LDL particles increased rapidly during the first 5 days of life, and the composition of LDL particles is modulated by TG content throughout the neonatal period. Ordered ZnO nanowire arrays have been fabricated in N2 background gas by catalyst-free nanoparticle-assisted pulsed-laser deposition. A single ZnO nanowire was collected in an electrode gap by dielectrophoresis. Under the optical pumping above an exciting laser (λ= 355 nm) threshold of ∼ 334 kW/cm2, ultraviolet lasing action in a single ZnO nanowire was observed at room temperature, indicating that the as-synthesized nanowires in pure N2 background gas are of high quality. The crystalline facets of both ends of the nanowire acted to form an optical cavity. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP, ADCYAP1: adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide 1), a neuropeptide with neurotransmission modulating activity, is a promising schizophrenia candidate gene. Here, we provide evidence that genetic variants of the genes encoding PACAP and its receptor, PAC1, are associated with schizophrenia. We studied the effects of the associated polymorphism in the PACAP gene on neurobiological traits related to risk for schizophrenia. This allele of the PACAP gene, which is overrepresented in schizophrenia patients, was associated with reduced hippocampal volume and poorer memory performance. Abnormal behaviors in PACAP knockout mice, including elevated locomotor activity and deficits in prepulse inhibition of the startle response, were reversed by treatment with an atypical antipsychotic, risperidone.
