Fresh snow and lichens (Cladonia rangiferina) were collected along two ~300-km transects in a regional survey around two smelter areas in Northern Ontario, i.e., the Sudbury and Timmins areas, in 2009–2010, as a part of a monitoring program. The samples were analyzed for Pb isotope ratios in snow from 47 sites, and in lichens from 28 sites, for background airborne lead and to determine the influence of distance versus local sources of Pb on a regional scale. Moreover, the lichen samples were split into two portions, the top portion, corresponding to recent growth (2–4 years), and the lower portion (up to 10+ years old) to determine the regime of recent versus old deposition. The study also investigated whether the isotopic signature in fresh snow (~1–2 weeks old) could correlate to the lichens' recent growth. The Pb isotope signatures, reported as Pb isotope ratios 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb, in both snow and lichen recent growth were uniform over the region, except for localized influences near Sudbury and Timmins, suggesting that the background Pb represented remote sources for most of the region. Three-isotope plots 208Pb/206Pb versus 207Pb/206Pb of snow and lichens followed a linear model typical of mixing lines between two sources. As there are no statistical differences of Pb isotope ratios between fresh snow and recent lichen growth at neighboring stations, either type of sample may be used to describe the short-term record of airborne inputs. Finally, we found a strong relationship between the Pb isotope ratios of the recent growth (upper part) and old growth (lower part) of the lichens, with a slope of 0.9 between the lichen parts. Although many studies have reported mechanisms of resistance to metals in herbaceous species, there is very little information on metal coping strategy in hardwood species such as Quercus rubra. The main objective of this study was to determine the expression of genes associated with nickel resistance in red oak (Q. rubra) populations from metal contaminated and uncontaminated sites in the Northern Ontario. Six genes associated with nickel resistances in model and non-model plants were targeted. Differential expressions of these genes were observed in Q. rubra from all the sites, but association between metal contamination and gene expression was not established. This suggests that the bioavailable amounts of metals found in metal contaminated soils in mining sites in northern Ontario and likely in many mining regions around the world cannot trigger a genetic response in higher plant species. This project is a qualitative study of the mental health perceptions and practices of one Aboriginal community in the northern Ontario James and Hudson Bay region. Despite a shared history of trauma and oppression with the other five Cree communities in this area, as well as an added trauma of natural disaster and subsequent relocation, this community has been reported to have markedly lower rates of mental health services utilization and suicide. Interviews with eight community leaders and mental health services providers were conducted and analyzed in order to identify the features that distinguish this community. In line with recent recommendations for culturally sensitive and community-compatible research methods, participants' narratives were organized in terms of the 'medicine wheel' of traditional healing. Results showed strong connection to the land and traditions, openness to both traditional and Christian spirituality, community engagement, and shared parenting as strengths valued by a majority of participants. Although a number of publications have provided convincing evidence that abiotic stresses such as drought and high salinity are involved in DNA methylation reports on the effects of metal contamination, pH, and cation exchange on DNA modifications are limited. The main objective of the present study is to determine the relationship between metal contamination and Cation exchange capacity (CEC) on whole DNA modifications. Metal analysis confirms that nickel and copper are the main contaminants in sampled sites within the Greater Sudbury Region (Ontario, Canada) and liming has increased soil pH significantly even after 30 years following dolomitic limestone applications. The estimated CEC values varied significantly among sites, ranging between 1.8 and 10.5 cmol(+) kg, with a strong relationship being observed between CEC and pH ( r = 0.96**). Cation exchange capacity, significantly lower in highly metal contaminated sites compared to both reference and less contaminated sites, was higher in the higher organic matter limed compared to unlimed sites. There was a significant variation in the level of cytosine methylation among the metal-contaminated sites. Significant and strong negative correlations between [5mdC]/[dG] and bioavailable nickel ( r = −0.71**) or copper ( r = −0.72**) contents were observed. The analysis of genomic DNA for adenine methylation in this study showed a very low level of [6N-mdA]/dT] in Acer rubrum plants analyzed ranging from 0 to 0.08%. Significant and very strong positive correlation was observed between [6N-mdA]/dT] and soil bioavailable nickel ( r = 0.78**) and copper ( r = 0.88**) content. This suggests that the increased bioavailable metal levels associated with contamination by nickel and copper particulates are associated with cytosine and adenine methylation. Metal toxicity is a major abiotic stressor of plants. It has been established that changes in genetic variation occur very rapidly in plants in response to environmental stressors such as increased levels of metals. Quercus rubra (red oak) is a pioneer species in mining regions contaminated with metals in Northern Ontario (Canada). The objectives of the study were to (1) determine the level of genetic variation in Q. rubra populations from mining damaged ecosystems using RAPD marker system and (2) assess the level of gene expression of candidate genes for nickel resistance. Total gene diversity (H) and the mean gene diversity among populations (H) were 0.22 and 0.19, respectively. The percent of polymorphic loci within populations was high ranging from 61 % (Capreol) to 72 % (Daisy Lake) despite a high level of gene flow (2.4). The population differentiation (G) value was low (0.17). No significant difference was found among the contaminated and reference sites for all the genetic parameters estimated. Hence, all the Q. rubra populations from the metal-contaminated and damaged ecosystems are genetically sustainable. Moreover, this study reveals that all populations were genetically closely related with genetic distance values varying from 0.17 to 0.35. A zinc finger protein of Arabidopsis thaliana (ZAT11) gene involved in nickel resistance was differentially expressed in samples analyzed. There was a 120 times higher of ZAT11 expression in samples from metal contaminated areas of Wahnapitae Dam compared to other metal contaminated and uncontaminated sites, but no association between soil metal levels and expression of ZAT11 was established. Background: In 2002, the province of Ontario introduced plans to ban coal in thermoelectric power production. Rural communities with a high proportion of power plant jobs (such as Atikokan, Ontario, Canada) grappled with three potential outcomes of the planned changes. These include the following: (i) the coal ban is overturned and power plants continue to burn non-renewable coal, (ii) the coal ban takes effect and power plants are closed, and (iii) the coal ban takes effect but power plants continue operating with alternative renewable fuel sources such as woody biomass. Considering there is a lack of readily available economic assessment tools for Ontario communities, the objective of this study is to model how direct changes in employment at the power plant (and indirect employment at associated local industries) impact the spending patterns of households associated with the power plant. Methods: To address the objective, an induced economic impact assessment model was developed by integrating quantitative publically available data sources with community-level qualitative data sources incorporating them into an input-output approach. Baseline values were established, representing induced community expenditure under the coal scenario. Values were then adjusted to represent induced community expenditure under shutdown and biomass scenarios. Results: The model suggests that the continuation of coal would allow for $82.7M in household spending, the shutdown reduces overall household spending to $72.1M which represents a decrease of 12.8 %, and the conversion to woody biomass as the sole fuel for the power plant increases household spending relative to the coal by $1.2M or 1.4 %. The results also indicate that the induced economic impact would be realized throughout the region, beyond Atikokan. Conclusions: These results suggest that biomass conversion could produce a net positive-induced economic effect as household spending increases, provided local biomass fuel supply is available. Since a conversion to biomass from coal at this scale is a North American first, other jurisdictions may gain insight from this study as they consider reducing their environmental footprint. Furthermore, the induced economic impact model method which is presented here could easily be adapted and used for other Ontario communities which lack access to established input-output models. Red maple ( Acer rubrum) species is one of the most widespread deciduous (hardwood) trees of eastern North America. It is among the dominant tree species in the Northern Ontario after land reclamation. To date, the effects of heavy metal contamination from the mining activities on terrestrial ecosystems are not well understood. The main objectives of the present study are (1) to determine the level of phytoavailable metal in soil and accumulation in A. rubrum, and (2) to compare the levels of genetic variation among and within A. rubrum populations from areas with different metal contents in a Northern Ontario region. The total heavy metal levels were found to be high but the availability of these metals were much lower. We found that red maple does not accumulate heavy metals in their leaves as other hardwood species. The translocation factors were 0.05, 0.21, 0.38, 0.90, and 2.8 for Cu, Ni, Fe, Zn, and Mg, respectively. The levels of genetic variation in red maple populations from reclaimed lands in Northern Ontario were moderate to high since the percentage of polymorphic loci varied between 51 and 67 %. The mean values for observed number of alleles (Na), effective number of alleles (Ne), Nei's gene diversity (h), and Shannon's information index (I) were 1.60, 1.24, 0.15 and 0.24, respectively. The population differentiation (G) among the fragmented populations was high (0.28) despite a high level of gene flow (Nm = 1.28). Nevertheless, all the populations within the targeted region were genetically closely related. A specific ISSR marker that was identified in all the samples from the reference sites was absent in most samples from metal contaminated. This specific band was cloned and sequenced. Soil metal contamination represents serious threats to plant ecosystem sustainability. Knowledge of metal distribution in plants and the effects of long-term exposure to high levels of metals on cytological stability in Deschampsia cespitosa and Populus tremuloides population is limited. The objective of the present study was to determine how D. cespitosa and P. tremuloides plants cope with soil metal contamination. The effects of high copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) soil concentrations on cytological stability were also analyzed. The results provide strong evidence that D. cespitosa plants cope with metal contaminations by accumulating them in their root system with limited translocation to their aerial plant parts. Metal bioaccumulation factors were high with values of 5.53 (Cu), 35.19 (Fe), 151.21 (Mg), 24.38 (Ni), and 27.42 (Zn). On the other hand, the bioaccumulation factors in P. tremuloides were 0.42 (Cu), 1.67 (Fe), 4.77 (Mg), 0.94 (Ni), and 5.53 (Zn). The translocation factors (TFs) from roots to leaves for poplar ( P. tremuloides) were high for Ni (8.38) and low for Cu (0.71). Cytological analysis clearly showed that long exposure of roots to high levels of metal contamination lead to significant mitotic disruption. Overall, 100 % of the plants from metal-contaminated sites showed a high level of mixoploidy compared to 17 % from the reference sites. Lagging chromosomes in mitotic anaphase were observed in most of the plants from metal-contaminated sites. The fate of colored natural organic matter (CNOM) was investigated for a period of 16 months at a municipal wastewater treatment plant of a mid-sized city in Northern Ontario, Canada, using fluorescence spectroscopy. Our objectives were to assess the changes of CNOM at the inlet and outlet of the plant and to determine if these changes were correlated with parameters routinely measured at the plant. The fluorescence signals were spectrally resolved into humic-like, fulvic-like, and protein-like components using a parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) routine. We found that the signals of the CNOM components in the raw sewage had protein-like characteristics, followed by fulvic-like and humic-like characteristics. Conversely, after treatment, the CNOM signals were dominated by fulvic-like components, followed by approximately equal signals of humic-like and protein-like components. The fluorescence signals were, on average, ∼60 % lower in the effluent for the protein-like components and ∼28 % lower for the humic-like components, suggesting a decomposition of these CNOM materials. The fluorescence signals showed a small apparent increase of fulvic-like components, by ∼4 %, suggesting that the material showing this signal is recalcitrant to decomposition, or it could be potentially produced in the process. We found weak but statistically significant correlations ( R > 0.3) between the total fluorescence signals and total carbon (TC), the flow rate through the plant, and rainfall in the raw sewage. Similarly, correlations were found between protein-like fluorescence of the protein-like components and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and ammonium at the effluent ( R > 0.3). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to understand wabusk (polar bear, Ursus maritimus) behaviours and interactions with people in the Hudson Bay lowlands of northern Ontario we conducted this collaborative study of Cree kiskayndamowin/knowledge. Our findings reveal that Cree knowledge supports previously published information on polar bears, while adding further contextual findings: that male polar bears travel greater distances into the muskeg than previously recorded; that wabusk prey on amisk (beaver, Castor canadensis); that wabusk interact with muskwa (black bears, Ursus americanus); and that human-polar bear interactions occur in this region of northern Canada. Bearing in mind that Cree knowledge has been recognized in wildlife management strategies (i.e., for beaver, caribou and moose) elsewhere in Canada, this particular body of information is timely, especially since polar bears are considered threatened under the Ontario Endangered Species Act, and the province is developing a recovery strategy for the Southern Hudson Bay polar bear population. The federal government is also contemplating listing polar bears in Canada as a 'species of special concern' under the Species at Risk Act (SARA). While it is unclear as to how these decisions will impact the Cree-polar interactions, the listing of polar bears by both governments, but especially the provincial government of Ontario, must recognize treaty and Aboriginal rights, acknowledge its duties to consult and properly accommodate Aboriginal people's views, incorporate Cree kiskayndamowin/knowledge of wabusk, and re-examine the proposed Wabusk Co-Management Agreement draft developed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) and Coastal Cree First Nations of Northern Ontario in 1994. The article provides recommendations that highlight how the Northern Cree First Nations, through the development of the Recovery Strategy for Polar Bear in Ontario, can become engaged in the management of wabusk in Ontario and throughout Canada. Climate change is expected to promote migration of species. In ecotones, areas of ecological tension, disturbances may provide opportunities for some migrating species to establish in otherwise competitive environments. The size of and time since disturbance may determine the establishment ability of these species. We investigated gap dynamics of an old-growth red pine ( Pinus resinosa Sol. ex Aiton) forest in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence forest in northern Ontario, Canada, a transition zone between temperate and boreal forest. We investigated the effects of gaps of different sizes and ages on tree species abundance and basal area. Our results show that tree species from the temperate forest further south, such as red maple ( Acer rubrum L.), red oak ( Quercus rubra L.), and white pine ( Pinus strobus L.), establish more often in large, old gaps; however, tree species that have more northern distributions, such as black spruce ( Picea mariana Mill.), paper birch ( Betula papyrifera Marsh.), and red pine show no difference in establishment ability with gap size or age. These differences in composition could not be attributed to autogenic succession. We conclude that treefall gaps in this forest facilitate the establishment of northward migrating species, potentially providing a pathway for future forest migration in response to recent changes in climate. OBJECTIVE: To compare Canadians of Aboriginal (First Nation, FN) and European ancestry (EA), with respect to obesity, subcutaneous fatness and relative subcutaneous fat distribution. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison. SUBJECTS: 118 First Nation and 472 European ancestry Canadians from Northern Ontario, youth (5–19 y) and adults (20–75 y). MEASUREMENTS: Stature, mass and skinfold thicknesses at the triceps, biceps, medial calf, subscapular, suprailiac and abdominal sites. ANALYSIS: Prevalence of obesity was determined using the 85th percentile of body mass index (BMI) from NHANES II as the cut-off. Principal components (PC) analyses were performed on the six skinfolds. The first component (PC1) represented a trunk-extremity skinfold contrast. Differences in mean component scores between FN and EA were assessed using independent samples t-tests. RESULTS: Prevalence of obesity among FN was high, ranging from 29% in youth to 60% in adult females. FN demonstrated greater subcutaneous adiposity and greater values for PC1, with the exception of adult males, where the difference is in the expected direction, but is not significant. The direction of the differences indicates that the FN have a greater centralization of subcutaneous fat. CONCLUSIONS: FN Canadians generally have a greater prevalence of obesity, greater subcutaneous fatness and a more centralized distribution of body fat than those of European ancestry. Among the Oji-Cree of northern Ontario, women have both a higher prevalence and an earlier onset of type 2 diabetes compared to men. We studied the relationship between HNF1A S319 and both the presence of and the age-of-onset of type 2 diabetes in women and men separately. We found that: 1) in women, there was a significant difference in the mean age-of-onset of type 2 diabetes according to HNF1A genotype; and 2) in men, there was no difference in the mean age-of-onset of type 2 diabetes according to HNF1A genotype. The findings indicate that HNF1A S319 is associated with increased susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in both men and women, but with earlier age-of-onset in women only. One factor that might account for the gender difference in the onset of HNF1A S319-associated type 2 diabetes is the greater prevalence and severity, and earlier onset of, obesity among female Oji-Cree.
