Urolithiasis is a major public health issue due to its increasing prevalence. The objective of this study was to describe the spectrophotometric profile of upper urinary tract stones (UTS) in Senegal. We conducted a multicenter retrospective study of all patients treated for upper UTS whose chemical composition was analyzed from January 2014 to January 2020 in eight regions of Senegal. Socio-demographic, clinical, paraclinical, and prognosis data were collected and analyzed. Three hundred and thirty-four patients were included in this study with a mean age of 46.3 ± 18.4 years and a sex ratio of 1.38. About one-third of patients (31.1%) had a body mass index > 25 kg/m2 and 74.2% presented with lumbar pain was the main clinical symptom. Calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones were the predominant types found, respectively, in 37.7% and 24.5% of patients. Uric acid was the main stone constituent in 18.6% of patients and struvites represented 14.7% of cases. Stones were located in the renal calyces and pelvis in 71.2% of cases. Surgical lithotomy was performed in 62.7% of patients for UTS extraction. Upper UTS are frequent condition in Senegalese with predominance of males and young adults. Fish are exposed to various parasites such as monogeneans which are flatworms that preferentially affect the gills and skin of these hosts. This study represents the first investigation concerning the distribution of monogenean infracommunities of Enteromius guirali in Cameroon. A total of 100 fish were collected from Cesala River and preserved in 8% formalin solution. Parasite community consisted of Dactylogyrus mendehei and D. nyongensis. These monogenean species adopted an aggregated distribution. Their mean intensities and prevalence increased with host size. Both sides of E. guirali were similarly infested, and no preference for gill arches was recorded for each parasite species. Posterior hemibranch was always the most parasitized, showing the highest parasitic load. Median sector and distal filamentous zone were highly colonized by both monogenean species. This study contributes to understand that the large gill surface offered by great hosts, heterogeneity, bilateral symmetrically of the host’s gill system on one hand, and the morphology of haptoral parts and reproduction of parasites, on the other hand, are the main factors which determine the distribution of studied component community. Treatment options for children living with HIV have historically been less effective, less practical and more difficult to implement compared with those for adults, as the research and development of new drugs for children has lagged behind. Significant progress has been achieved in response to the paediatric HIV epidemic over the last decade. Several optimised paediatric antiretroviral formulations are currently available or in development, including fixed-dose combination tablets containing a complete World Health Organization-recommended regimen. Despite these advancements, virological suppression rates in children are generally lower than in adults. Even when oral fixed-dose combinations with the optimal target profiles are developed, for some children virological suppression is not achievable for reasons such as adherence challenges, intolerance, toxicity and genotypic resistance. New safe, effective, well-tolerated antiretroviral agents from existing and novel classes, as well as innovative administration strategies are essential. To achieve the UNAIDS target of virological suppression in 95% of children receiving antiretroviral therapy, concerted efforts are required. This includes identifying priority drugs in line with latest developments, focusing drug development studies on these priorities, ensuring a timely technical knowledge transfer between originator and generic companies, accelerating regulatory approvals and facilitating procurement and implementation in countries. Success in these efforts depends on collaboration among all stakeholders, including communities, researchers, pharmaceutical companies, guideline and policymakers, governments, funders, regulators and healthcare providers. Background: Nephropathic cystinosis (NC) is a rare lysosomal disease, leading to early kidney failure and extra-renal comorbidities. Its prognosis strongly relies on early diagnosis and treatment by cysteamine. Developing economies (DEing) face many challenges when treating patients for rare and chronic diseases. The aim here is to evaluate the access to investigations and treatment in DEing, and to assess for potential inequalities with Developed Economies (DEed). Methods: In this international cross-sectional study, a questionnaire on access, price and reimbursement of genetic, biological analyses, and treatment was sent to nephrology centers worldwide during 2022. Results: A total of 109 centers responded, coming from 49 countries and managing 741 patients: 43 centers from 30 DEing and Economies in transition (TrE), and 66 from 19 DEed. In 2022, genetics availability was 63% in DEing and 100% in DEed, whereas intra leukocytes cystine levels (IL-CL) were available for 30% of DEing patients, and 94% of DEed patients, both increasing over the last decade, as has access to immediate release cysteamine and to cysteamine eye drops in DEing. However, delayed released cysteamine can be delivered to only 7% vs. 74% of patients from DEing and DEed, respectively, and is still poorly reimbursed in DEing. Conclusions: Over the last decade, access to investigations (namely genetics and IL-CL) and to cysteamine have improved in DEing and TrE. However, discrepancies remain with DEed: access to delayed released cysteamine is limited, and reimbursement is still profoundly insufficient, therefore limiting their current use. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Senegal, contact tracing was done to identify transmission clusters, their analysis allowed to understand their dynamics and evolution. In this study, we used information from the surveillance data and phone interviews to construct, represent and analyze COVID-19 transmission clusters from March 2, 2020, to May 31, 2021. In total, 114,040 samples were tested and 2153 transmission clusters identified. A maximum of 7 generations of secondary infections were noted. Clusters had an average of 29.58 members and 7.63 infected among them; their average duration was 27.95 days. Most of the clusters (77.3%) are concentrated in Dakar, capital city of Senegal. The 29 cases identified as super-spreaders, i.e., the indexes that had the most positive contacts, showed few symptoms or were asymptomatic. Deepest transmission clusters are those with the highest percentage of asymptomatic members. The correlation between proportion of asymptomatic and degree of transmission clusters showed that asymptomatic strongly contributed to the continuity of transmission within clusters. During this pandemic, all the efforts towards epidemiological investigations, active case-contact detection, allowed to identify in a short delay growing clusters and help response teams to mitigate the spread of the disease. Power MOSFETs are ubiquitously present in the structure of static power converters. The high switching frequency, power MOSFETs are subject to, along with the different inductive and capacitive parasitic elements unavoidably present in the structure of the electric circuits leads to the emission of undesirable Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI). Despite being harmful, the emitted EMIs are rich in information regarding the state of the emitting agent. Recent works have relied on the electromagnetic signature for open-circuit fault detection. However efficient, these methods usually relied on computationally heavy signal processing tools for fault signature extraction. In this work, however, we propose a cross-correlation-based EMI analysis to extract open-circuit switch faults signatures in a three-level NPC inverter. This method is more efficient and it results in a faster diagnosis time. The cross-correlations between the different intervals of the conducted EMI where each MOSFET pair is solicited are modeled in the healthy case. A change in the similarities between intervals, measured by the cross-correlations, is indicative of an unusual situation. Purpose: Research on gill monogeneans of Characiform has made it possible to find two new species belonging to the genus Annulotrema. The purpose of this paper is to carry out their morphological description. Methods: Specimens of Brycinus macrolepidotus were captured in the Nyong River at Akonolinga. Each monogenean was mounted between slide and cover slip in a drop of glycerin ammonium picrate mixture. The sclerotized parts of their haptor and reproductive organs were then drawn and measured. Results: Two new species of Annulotrema were described. Annulotrema ngombiensis n. sp. is morphologically close to Annulotrema tenuicirra Paperna, 1973 and Annulotrema pikei Price, Peebles and Bamford, 1969. However, the new species differs from these other two mainly by the characteristic well-marked terminal cap and the tubiform prostatic reservoir of the accessory part of its MCO, as well as by its dorsal bar with a characteristic triangular piece in the middle of the fork and its ventral bar without filaments. Annulotrema nkengfacki n. sp. is distinguished from all other species previously described as well as from its closest congeners, Annulotrema helicocirra Paperna, 1973 and Annulotrema bouixi Birgi, 1988 by the structure of its MCO whose accessory part is composed of a trapezoid structure surmounted by another which is forked-shaped and by its arched-shaped ventral bar with an inner lining. Conclusion: Brycinus macrolepidotus from Cameroon can harbour two species of Annulotrema, both described in the current study. Profiling of the antibody responses to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) proteins in African populations is scarce. Here, we performed a detailed IgM and IgG epitope mapping study against 487 peptides covering SARS-CoV-2 wild-type structural proteins. A panel of 41 pre-pandemic and 82 COVID-19 RT-PCR confirmed sera from Madagascar and Senegal were used. We found that the main 36 immunodominant linear epitopes identified were (i) similar in both countries, (ii) distributed mainly in the Spike and the Nucleocapsid proteins, (iii) located outside the RBD and NTD regions where most of the reported SARS-CoV-2 variant mutations occur, and (iv) identical to those reported in European, North American, and Asian studies. Within the severe group, antibody levels were inversely correlated with the viral load. This first antibody epitope mapping study performed in patients from two African countries may be helpful to guide rational peptide-based diagnostic assays or vaccine development. This study examines the influence of environmental values on consumer intentions to participate in agritourism through the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and value-belief-norm (VBN) theory. It proposes an integrative model by adding two variables, i.e., environmental benefits and the human-nature coordination concept, to the TPB. The study employs a questionnaire survey method and a sample of 640, which was statistically analysed through structural equation modeling (SEM). The results reveal that the “environmental values-attitudes-behavioural intentions” framework has scientific applicability in agritourism. Environmental values, measured through the variables environmental benefits and the human-nature coordination concept, are positively correlated directly or indirectly with agritourism consumption intentions, while attitudes and subjective norms serve as mediators. However, the mediating effect of perceived behavioural control is not statistically significant, indicating making efforts to influence attitudes and subjective norms is more useful for and effective in stimulating the public’s intentions towards agritourism. Early predictions forecasted large numbers of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) cases and associated deaths in Africa. To date, Africa has been relatively spared. Various hypotheses were postulated to explain the lower than anticipated impact on public health in Africa. However, the contribution of pre-existing immunity is yet to be investigated. In this study, the presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins in pre-pandemic samples from Africa, Europe, South and North America was examined by ELISA. The protective efficacy of N specific antibodies isolated from Central African donors was tested by in vitro neutralization and in a mouse model of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 S and N proteins were rare in all populations except in Gabon and Senegal where N specific antibodies were prevalent. However, these antibodies failed to neutralize the virus either in vitro or in vivo. Overall, this study indicates that cross-reactive immunity against SARS-CoV-2 N protein was present in Africa prior to the pandemic. However, this pre-existing humoral immunity does not impact viral fitness in rodents suggesting that other human immune defense mechanisms could be involved. The distribution of ticks is essentially determined by the presence of climatic conditions and ecological contexts suitable for their survival and development. We build a model that explicitly takes into account each physiological state through a system of infinite differential equations where tick population density are structured on an infinite discrete set. We suppose that intrastage development process is temperature dependent (Arrhenius temperatures function) and that larvae hatching and adult mortality are temperature and water vapor deficit dependent. Home gardens are reservoirs of biological diversity. This study assessed plant diversity conservation in home gardens of Thies region (Senegal) with the aim of documenting species composition and diversity in the home gardens. A sample of 30 home gardens was selected from the three main departments of the region and was used to collect plant species data. Data were collected from home gardens which were selected based on recommendations from the village leaders. Techniques used were plant inventory, participatory observations and individual interviews. Species classification and nomenclature were based on Angiosperm Phylogeny Group IV botanical classification system, Senegal analytical flora and the world plant list. Microsoft Office excel was used for some calculations, tabulation and drawing graphs. Comparison of effect between different variables was analysed in analytical software R using simple linear regression, and plant diversity was calculated using the Shannon diversity index. A total of 96 plant species belonging to 86 genera, and 43 families were identified. Out of these, 34 were trees, 33 were shrubs, and 29 were herbs. 95 were angiosperms with 79 dicotyledonous and 16 monocotyledonous, and only one (1) was a gymnosperm. Species from Fabaceae family were the highest in number (9 species) whereas Citrus limon was the most frequent (80%) species in the home gardens. The results of the Shannon index indicate that there is high species diversity in the home gardens of Thies region (H1 = 3.9365) with moderate equitability (E = 0.5968). The gardeners were 73% men and 27% women. At department level, 66 species (38 families) were recorded in Mbour, 54 species (33 families) in Tivaoune and 50 species (26 families) in Thies department. The study indicates that home gardens are agriculture systems ecologically important for plant diversity conservation, they have a higher potential for ex-situ conservation of plants in the agro ecosystem. This study assesses the effects of curing temperatures (28 and 60 °C) and P2O5 / H2O molar ratio percentages (4 to 12 %) on initial setting time, microstructure and mechanical strength of volcanic ash-based phosphate inorganic polymers. The inorganic polymers along with the raw materials were characterized by X Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). In addition, initial setting time of pastes was determined along with compressive strength and water absorption on specimens aged 28 days. The results showed that initial setting time decreases with the increase of P2O5 / H2O molar ratio percentage in the range of 126 − 20 Min (28 °C) and 20 − 10 Min (60 °C). Conversely, either at 28 or 60 °C curing, compressive strength increases with the increase of P2O5 / H2O molar ratio percentage. FTIR spectra show the presence of Ca-O and Fe-O and Al-O-P-O bonds. Dependent on curing temperature, new crystalline phases including hydroxyl apatite, brushite, sigloite, aluminium phosphate hydrate, potassium magnesium phosphate hydrate and silicon hydrogen phosphate were formed. The proprotein convertase PACE4 has demonstrated value as a viable therapeutic target in prostate cancer (PCa). A novel isoform named PACE4-altCT, which arises in neoplastic lesions, plays an important role in tumor progression and has been validated as a pharmacological target. With the discovery of its overexpression in PCa and the alternative splicing of its pre-RNA to generate an oncogenic C-terminally modified isoform named PACE4-altCT, understanding and validating its value as a potential biomarker is of great interest either from prognostic or targeted therapy intervention. Expression of ERG in LNCaP cells was used to investigate the relationship between ERG expression occurring in PCa cells and PACE4-altCT expression by Western blot and qPCR. Using immunohistochemistry, the expression levels of PACE4 isoforms in patient tissues were investigated and correlated with ERG tumor status and Gleason score. An ELISA method was developed using affinity purified recombinant protein and used for quantitative analysis of plasma concentrations of PACE4-altCT and used for correlation. In contrast with the consensual isoform, PACE4-altCT was only strongly overexpressed in prostate cancer patients, correlated with ERG expression levels. Despite its intracellular retention PACE4-altCT could be detected in the plasma of most patients with prostate cancer, whereas it was only found at low levels in normal patients whereas total plasmatic PACE4 levels did not vary significantly between groups. Our study demonstrates that PACE4-altCT is strongly overexpressed in prostate cancer using both immunohistochemical and ELISA techniques and may have some interesting potential as a biomarker. Strains Marseille-P2265T (=CSUR P2265T =DSM 102082 T) and Marseille-P3890T (=CSUR P3890T =CCUG 72341 T) were isolated from stool samples using the culturomics approach. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of both strains were sequenced and compared by BLASTn to the NCBI database. Strains Marseille-P2265T and Marseille-P3890T were most closely related to Acutalibacter muris with identities of 94.3% and 91.5%, respectively. Between the two strains, the 16S rRNA gene sequence identity was 91.5%. Both strains are anaerobic Gram-positive, oxidase- and catalase-negative. The major fatty acid methyl esters (> 10%) in both strains are C16:0 and anteiso-C15:0. Additionally, strain Marseille-P2265T has iso-C15:0 and C14:0, and strain Marseille-P3890T, iso-C14:0. Strain Marseille-P2265T has a genome size of 3,671,396-bp with a G + C content of 52.8%. As for strain Marseille-P3890T, the genome is 2,702,024-bp-long with a 39.8% G + C content. The genomic comparison of closely related species with strains Marseille-P2265T and Marseille-P3890T showed that all digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH), orthologous average nucleotide identity (OrthoANI) and average amino acid identity (AAI) values were lower than the published species thresholds (70% for dDDH, 95–96% for OrthoANI/AAI). Based on these results, it was concluded that strains Marseille-P2265T and Marseille-P3890T belong to two new genera in the family Oscillospiraceae. For these two genera, the names Neglectibacter gen. nov. and Scatolibacter gen. nov. were proposed, with strains Marseille-P2265T and Marseille-P3890T being the type strains of Neglectibacter timonensis gen. nov., sp. nov. and Scatolibacter rhodanostii gen. nov., sp. nov., respectively. Background: Aneurysm of vein of Galen is a rare congenital arteriovenous malformation. Clinical manifestations depend on the age of discovery. Endovascular embolization is currently the treatment of choice. This technique is not always available in developing countries. We report 3 cases treated symptomatically by endoscopic third ventriculostomy and ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Cases presentation: Three patients, 7 months, 15 years, and 26 years old, received in a table of acute intracranial hypertension, associated for the first one with convulsions and for the second one with moderate heart failure. Bain CT scan revealed triventricular hydrocephalus secondary to sacciform dilatation of the Galen's vein in all three patients, requiring symptomatic treatment by endoscopic third ventriculostomy for the first patient and ventriculoperitoneal shunt for the other two in the absence of an adequate clinical platform for endovascular embolization. The evolution was favorable at 1 year's follow-up. Conclusion: Galen's vein aneurysm is a rare vascular malformation. It mainly affects newborns and small children but can be discovered in adulthood. Endovascular embolization is its treatment of choice. This technique is not always available in some countries, which makes it necessary to resort to symptomatic treatment by ventricular shunt. Strain SN6T is a non-motile and non-spore-forming gram-negative bacterium which was isolated from the stool sample of an Amazonian patient. The optimum growth was observed at 37 °C, pH 7, and 0–5 g/l of NaCl. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, the strain SN6T exhibited 97.5% identity with Vitreoscilla stercoraria strain ATCC_15218 (L06174), the phylogenetically closest species with standing in nomenclature. The predominant fatty acid was hexadecenoic acid (31%). The genomic DNA G + C content of the strain SN6T was 49.4 mol %. After analysis of taxonogenomic data, phenotypic and biochemical characteristics, we concluded that strain SN6T represents a new species of the genus Vitreoscilla for which the name Vitreoscilla massiliensis sp.nov is proposed. Many infectious diseases including malaria, lymphatic filariasis, chikungunya and dengue are transmitted by mosquitoes. Understanding the entomological diversity in a given area is critical for defining health risks, but also to design and evaluate control measures. Our study aimed to establish an entomological database of the Culicidae fauna in two clusters (Nyalla and Kambo) in the city of Douala in Cameroon. A longitudinal study was conducted from August to December in the Nyalla and Kambo neighbourhoods in the city of Douala. Culicidae larvae were weekly collected and reared until adult emergence. Adults were then morphologically identified using reference identification keys. A total of 20 breeding sites were productive out of an approximately 90 sites prospected. Water collections, pits, swamps and cinder blocks were main categories of larval habitats. In total, 2125 mosquito larvae were collected and reared during the survey. A total of 1790 mosquito adults emerged and were further identified and distributed among three genera: Culex (73.3%); Anopheles (22.6%) and Aedes (4.1%). Eleven Culicidae species were identified: Culex duttoni, Cx. descens, Cx. poicilipes, Cx. univittatus, Cx tigripes, Cx. antennatus, Cx. simpsoni, Cx. pipiens, Anopheles gambiae sl, Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. Culex duttoni (39%) and An. gambiae s.l. (22.6%) were the main species recorded. The equitability, species richness and abundance of these genera was influenced by the nature of breeding sites and physical parameters including rainfall and temperature. The present study provides insights on the entomological diversity of the Culicidae fauna in the study area. This study presents the elaboration and characterization of a composite material based on Typha australis and clay for the use of an innovative building material in construction. For this purpose, various percentages ranging from 0 to 55% with a pitch of 15 were used. The aim is to find a better compromise between the thermal and mechanical properties of this composite material. According to this, the influence of the length of the 1 cm and 3 cm fibers was studied. As Typha australis is very porous, the hydric properties of the material studied in this work show that its porosity increases the rate of water absorption following a logarithmic law and the mass loss of the composite material evolves exponentially as a function of time. The mass increases when the percentage of fibers is low. The thermophysical property of Typha australis is 0.06 W/m K. That property allows us to state that Typha australis can be used for thermal insulation. The thermophysical properties of the composite material show that the thermal conductivity decreases as the percentage and length of fibers increase. In fact, the thermal conductivity of the clay is 1.03 W/m K while the mixture of clay with 55% of 1 cm fibers gave a thermal conductivity of 0.146 W/m K. The mixture of clay with the same percentage of 3 cm fibers gave a thermal conductivity of 0.113 W/m K. This study aimed to perform a comparative analysis of the performance of five models (Gompertz, logistic, Richards, the first-order, artificial neural networks) in predicting methane production rate from anaerobic digestion of livestock manures. The input variables were fermentation time, digestion temperature, biogas temperature, ambient temperature, pH, and specific biogas production rate. The physicochemical compositions of cow manure and sheep manure showed that volatile solid (VS) contents were close to each other in manure compositions (77.6% and 64.7%, respectively), while the potential of methane production from cow manure (673.44 mL CH4/g VS) was greater than that from sheep manure (320.32 mL CH4/g VS). The determination coefficients (R2) for logistic function, Gompertz, Richards, the first-order, and ANN models were obtained as 0.968, 0.967, 0.975, 0.825, and 0.995 for the cow manure, respectively. In case of the sheep manure, the R2 values obtained from these models were 0.976, 0.979, 0.981, 0.968 and 0.991, respectively. Although the determination coefficients of all models were in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data, the ANN model showed competitive lower RMSE values of 0.111 and 0.164 for cow and sheep manure data sets, respectively, indicating its superior performance than other models. African root and tuber scale (ARTS) Stictococcus vayssierei Richard is a serious constraint to the production of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) in Central Africa, and the food and income security for smallholder farmers. Therefore, to improve the production of cassava it is urgent to determine the appropriate cultural practices that lower ARTS infestation pressure. This study tests the single and combined effects of stem cutting portion and crop variety on ARTS infestation levels'. A split-plot design with four cassava varieties (TMS 96/0023, Excel, Miboutou and Douma) as the main plots and three stem cuttings portions of these varieties (lower, middle and upper portions of the mother plant) as sub-plots was used. The results showed that at 12 months after planting (MAP), lower portions of the local variety Douma showed the highest fresh shoots (2.95 ± 0.13 kg) than the upper portions (2.08 ± 0.09 kg) of the Excel variety. The portions at lower of the Excel variety were the most infested (118-158.38 and 126.75 ARTS) at 3, 6 and 9 MAP respectively. The yield of local variety Douma was higher (20.00-20.11 t ha− 1) in plots planted with portions at middle and lower, followed by yields of TMS 96/0023 variety (19.00 t ha− 1) in plots planted with the lower portions. Overall, irrespective of the cassava variety, the lower portion 16.49 t ha− 1 resulted in higher yield than those the upper portion 10.81 t ha− 1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Gram-negative and facultative anaerobic bacterium, designated strain SN4T, was isolated from the stool sample of an obese Amazonian patient. The new isolate was characterized by the taxonogenomics approach. The strain SN4T was beige-colored, circular and not haemolytic. Cells are rod shaped and motile with several flagella. Strain SN4T grows optimally at pH 7 and can survive in the presence of a saline concentration of up to 75 g/l NaCl. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis of the novel strain SN4T showed 95.28% similarity in nucleotide sequence with Gorillibacterium massiliense G5T, the phylogenetically closest neighbor and the type species of this genus. Anteiso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 and C16:0 were found as the major components in the cellular fatty acid analysis of this isolate. The genomic draft of strain SN4T is 5,263,742 bp long with 53.33% of G+C content. The differences in physiological, biochemical characteristics and phylogenetic and genomic data make it possible to clearly distinguish the strain SN4T from G. massiliense G5T. Based on the taxonogenomic description and the phenotypic and biochemical characteristics of this bacterium presented in this article, we propose the SN4T strain (= CSUR P2011 = DSM 100,698) as a new species, Gorillibacterium timonense sp. nov. Experimental evidence on the effects of introducing nitrogen-fixing trees (NFTs) in forests and agroforestry systems on soil properties, crop yields, carbon (C) sequestration, and other ecosystem services in the Congo basin is scarce. A systematic literature review was conducted to study the effects of integrating NFTs in forests and agroforestry systems on tree biomass carbon stocks, soil properties (i.e., soil organic C (SOC), N, P, CEC, C:N ratio), crop yields and other ecosystem services; and examine their contribution to the objectives of 4 per 1000 Initiative. Electronic search engines (Google, Google Scholar) were searched focusing on Acacia auriculiformis–based agroforestry in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Acacia mangium–based forestry in Republic of the Congo (RoC). This study suggests that integrating NFTs in both agricultural and forest landscapes in the Congo basin (DRC and RoC) improves the soil health through C sequestration and nutrient restoration relative to tropical savannas. This practice also generates other ecosystem services (i.e., pulp and fuelwood energy supply, poles for electricity network, food availability, land restoration). Integrating NFTs in forest and agroforestry ecosystems could therefore improve soil health and food security, mitigate climate change, and hence promote the objectives of 4 per 1000 Initiative. Purpose: We evaluated whether an increased body-mass index (BMI) and decreased physical activity increase the risk of locally advanced or high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) at radical prostatectomy (RP), and treatment failure after surgery. Methods: Data were collected from the PROCURE Biobank, a prospective cohort of patients with localized PCa undergoing RP in four academic centers in Québec between 2006 and 2013. Treatment failure was defined as biochemical recurrence and/or initiation of secondary, non-adjuvant therapy, and analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional-hazards models. Uni- and multivariate (ordered) logistic regression was used for time-independent variables. Results: 1813 patients were included. Median follow-up time was 69 months. Patients who reported a lower BMI were generally older, of Asian descent, and physically more active (p < 0.05). Younger, black, and overweight/obese patients reported less physical activity (p < 0.05). In multivariate analyses, a higher BMI increased the risk for locally advanced, high-risk PCa (defined as a pT3, N1 and/or Gleason 8–10 tumor; odds ratio 1.33, p < 0.001), but increased physical activity did not predict high-risk disease (odds ratio 0.84, p = 0.39). Patients with a higher BMI also had a larger prostate at surgery (odds ratio 1.13, p = 0.03). BMI and physical activity were not associated with positive surgical margins or time to treatment failure (p > 0.05). Conclusions: BMI was an independent predictor for locally advanced, high-risk disease in this cohort of PCa patients undergoing RP, but was unrelated to treatment failure. In this paper, we estimate the distribution of population by exposure to multiple airborne pollutants, taking into account the spatio-temporal variability of daily air quality and the high-resolution spatial spread of human population around Europe. In particular, we consider monitoring network data for five pollutants, namely carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, coarse and fine particulate matters. The spatial information contained in the large dataset of daily continental air quality is exploited using a multivariate spatio-temporal model capable to cover cross correlation among pollutants, covariates, and missing data as well as spatial and temporal variability and correlation. At the same time, the model is simple enough to be feasible for the large dataset of daily continental air quality over three years. Maximum likelihood estimation is performed using the EM algorithm, and kriging-like spatial estimates are used to compute high-resolution exposure distribution. Moreover, a novel semi-parametric bootstrap technique is used to assess the exposure distribution uncertainty. In this way, we compare the daily population exposure of 33 European countries and three important metropolitan areas in years 2009-2011 using a single flexible model. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of mangrove vegetation structure and dynamics is required for assessment of coastal habitat vulnerability. Changes in mangrove forests around Douala, Cameroon, have been documented using aerial photography between 1974 and 2009. The distribution pattern of tree species was also assessed in 2009 following the point-centered quarter method (PCQM+) protocol. Pristine mangroves observed in 1974 had been disturbed markedly in 2003 and 2009. Some of the pre-existing mangroves were entirely replaced by settlements, road, and crops (maize, bean, banana, oil palm, green vegetables, and sugar cane plantations). From 1974 to 2003, 39.86 % of mangrove forests have disappeared; the net loss of 22.10 % occurred between 2003 and 2009 alone. Mangrove forest area had decreased 53.16 % around Douala over a 35-year period from 1974 to 2009 concurrent with a substantial increase of settlements (60 %), roads (233.33 %), agriculture areas (16 %), non-mangrove areas (193.33 %), and open water (152.94 %). Field survey showed that almost one third of the quadrants in the remaining mangrove forest were empty. The disrupted mangrove forest has an overall mean height, absolute density, and basal area of 19.80 m, 158 trees ha, and 110.44 m ha, respectively. In comparison with scientific literature on mangrove degradation, this puts the mangroves around Douala at the top of the 'peri-urban mangrove degradation' list. In addition, beyond listing of mangrove plants on the Red List of Threatened Species which will seldom lead to widely distributed species being listed, we call for the creation of a Red List of Locally Threatened Ecosystems, which in contrast is likely to list mangroves as an ecosystem under critical risk of (local) extinction in many countries around the globe, in particular, peri-urban sites. Several studies have suggested that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is uncommon in rural sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study is to determine the potential differences between patients with RA living in rural areas and those living in urban areas. We performed a cross-sectional study from June 2006 to May 2009. We included all patients with RA (1987 ACR criteria) seen at the Rheumatology Unit of the Le Dantec Teaching Hospital, Dakar, Senegal. We compared the main socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of patients living in rural areas to those living in urban areas. We included 180 patients in our study, of whom, 143 (79.4 %) lived in urban areas and 37 (20.6 %) in rural areas. The median age was 44 years [range 34-55] in patients from rural areas vs. 41 years [range 30-53] in patients from urban areas, without any statistical significance ( p = 0.24). Patients under the age of 60 mostly lived in urban areas ( p = 0.03). The extra-articular manifestations were significantly more frequent in patients living in rural areas ( p = 0.02). There was no statistical significance when comparing the delay in diagnosis, number of swollen joints, disease activity, hand deformities, and concentration of autoantibodies (RF and ACPA) in both populations. The percentage of patients seen from the rural areas of Senegal is low (20.6 %) compared to those seen from the urban areas. The number of extra-articular manifestations is the main difference between patients living in rural and urban areas. The role played by environmental factors seems important. Purpose: Lersivirine is a next-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) with a unique resistance profile that exhibits potent antiretroviral activity against wild-type human immunodeficiency virus and clinically relevant NNRTI-resistant strains. Results from in vitro and in vivo investigations suggest that lersivirine is a cytochrome P450 (CYP3A4) inducer that is metabolized by CYP3A4 and uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) 2B7. In order to formally assess the effects of lersivirine on CYP3A4 metabolism and/or glucuronidation, we performed studies aimed at investigating the effects of lersivirine co-administration on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of midazolam, ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. Methods: Two drug-drug interaction studies were performed. Healthy subjects were co-administered (1) single dose midazolam, a prototypical CYP3A4 substrate, followed by 14 days of lersivirine twice daily with single dose midazolam on the final day of lersivirine dosing or (2) 10 days of once-daily (QD) lersivirine and QD oral contraceptives (OCs; ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel), substrates for CYP3A4, UGT2B7, and/or P-glycoprotein. The effects of co-administration on the PK parameters of midazolam and OCs were assessed. Results: At clinically relevant lersivirine doses (500-1,000 mg total daily dose), the mean plasma exposure of midazolam was reduced in a dose-dependent manner by 20-36 %. Co-administration of lersivirine 1,000 mg QD with OCs had minor PK effects, increasing ethinylestradiol exposure by 10 % and reducing levonorgestrel exposure by 13 %. Conclusions: These data further support previous observations that lersivirine is a weak CYP3A4 inducer, a weak inhibitor of glucuronidation, and a P-glycoprotein inhibitor. Microsporidia are fungi-related obligate intracellular parasites that infect numerous animals, including man. Encephalitozoon cuniculi harbours a very small genome (2.9 Mbp) with about 2,000 coding sequences (CDSs). Most repeated CDSs are of unknown function and are distributed in subterminal regions that mark the transitions between subtelomeric rDNA units and chromosome cores. A potential multigenic family ( interB) encoding proteins within a size range of 579–641 aa was investigated by PCR and RT-PCR. Thirty members were finally assigned to the E. cuniculi interB family and a predominant interB transcript was found to originate from a newly identified gene on chromosome III. Microsporidian species from eight different genera infecting insects, fishes or mammals, were tested for a possible intra-phylum conservation of interB genes. Only representatives of the Encephalitozoon, Vittaforma and Brachiola genera, differing in host range but all able to invade humans, were positive. Molecular karyotyping of Brachiola algerae showed a complex set of chromosome bands, providing a haploid genome size estimate of 15–20 Mbp. In spite of this large difference in genome complexity, B. algerae and E. cuniculi shared some similar interB gene copies and a common location of interB genes in near-rDNA subterminal regions. To strengthen the regeneration and management of Cameroon's coastal ecosystems, the biological characteristics of seedlings of Avicennia germinans (L.) Stearn and associated species were analysed from January 1999 to December 1999 in the mangroves under different environmental conditions. Site factors such as temperature, conductivity, salinity and pH were studied in relation to species distribution, and showed significant variation within species. These factors were strongly correlated in the case of A. germinans. The phenology of Avicennia extends throughout the year. Structural parameters of the trees, seedlings and of associated species have been determined. The survey of plant populations shows that A. germinans species represent more than 95% of the total seedlings of the study area, in spite of their variable density. A correlation was found between seedling diameter and height. The intra-specific competition is high and the percentage of seedlings that reach maturity is extremely low (less than 1%). Seedlings are over-scattered and weakly aggregated (Green index: GI = 0.023). Floristic diversity is greater and A. germinans zones appear to be the diversification centre of taxa in the mangroves. Following the 2014 outbreak, active surveillance of the EV-D68 has been implemented in many countries worldwide. Despite subsequent EV-D68 outbreaks (2014 and 2016) reported in many areas, EV-D68 circulation remains largely unexplored in Africa except in Senegal, where low levels of EV-D68 circulation were first noted during the 2014 outbreak. Here we investigate subsequent epidemiology of EV-D68 in Senegal from June to September 2016 by screening respiratory specimens from ILI and stool from AFP surveillance. EV-D68 was detected in 7.4% (44/596) of patients; 40 with ILI and 4 with AFP. EV-D68 detection was significantly more common in children under 5 years (56.8%, p = 0.016). All EV-D68 strains detected belonged to the newly defined subclade B3. This study provides the first evidence of EV-D68 B3 subclade circulation in Africa from patients with ILI and AFP during a 2016 outbreak in Senegal. The photophysical properties of some 3-hydroxychromones (3-HC) and 3-hydroxyquinolones (3-HQ) derivatives are investigated in polar and non-polar aprotic solvents using the TDDFT method and the PCM formalism. In acetonitrile and n-hexane, 2-(2-benzothienyl)-3-HC) (BTHC), 2-furyl-3-HQ (FHQ), and 1-methyl-2-furyl-3-HQ (MFHQ) have exhibited dual emission bands due to the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reaction, leading to a single excited tautomer form. Our results indicate a very high BTHC light absorption efficiency and radiative rate constant. A charge transfer (CT) analysis suggests that the chromone moiety acts as an acceptor group while quinolone moiety acts as an electron donor. In addition, in non-polar n-hexane the furyl group may act as an acceptor, while in polar acetonitrile it may act as an electron donor. The energies of the upper and lower states of the normal form fluorescence have been decreased by the introduction of ortho-methyl group in FHQ. In all states, MFHQ exhibits large distortions of the dihedral angle between the chromone moiety and the furan group in para position. The ESIPT reaction is irreversible for the three derivatives in all cases studied in this work.
