Background: Pre-operative kidney disease was shown to impact peri-operative outcomes of endoscopic BPH surgeries. We aim to assess the effect of novel surgical techniques (Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (LEP) and Laser Vaporization of the Prostate (LVP)) compared to Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP), on post-operative outcomes stratified based on kidney function. Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was reviewed from 2008 to 2021 for 83,020 patients that underwent TURP, LEP, and LVP. Pre-operative variables were compared across kidney function groups: G1(normal/high function); G2-G3(mild/moderate kidney disease); and G4-G5(severe kidney disease). Multivariate logistic regression was performed on 30-day peri-operative complications adjusting for pre-operative variables. Propensity score matching was done between LEP and LVP to TURP. Results: LEP showed a protective effect against UTIs (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 categories but lost that protective effect in the G4-G5 category when compared to TURP. It had longer operative time (p < 0.05) across all kidney function groups, and demonstrated shorter hospital stay (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 categories compared to TURP. LVP had a persistent protective effect against bleeding (p < 0.05) across all kidney function groups and shorter hospital stay (p < 0.05) when compared to TURP. LVP had a protective effect against return to OR (p < 0.05) in the G1 and G2-G3 kidney function group but lost that protective effect in the G4-G5 category. LVP had significant protective effect against thromboembolic events (p < 0.05) in the G2-G3 category and against cardiac complications (p < 0.05) in the G4-G5 category. Conclusion: LEP and LVP are superior to TURP in terms of post-operative complications. Malaria, though witnessing a decline in prevalence, remains a global health threat. Despite its primarily recognized impact on the hematological system, recent studies shed light on severe cardiac complications, particularly myocarditis, associated with Plasmodium infections. This review examines the literature on malaria-induced myocarditis to elucidate its mechanisms, clinical manifestations, regional perspectives, treatment outcomes, and diagnostic challenges. A literature search spanning PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science identified relevant studies up to January 2024, encompassing case reports, cohort studies, clinical trials, and experimental studies. The relationship between severe malaria and myocardial involvement is explored, showcasing elevated biomarkers indicative of myocardial damage. Notably, while Plasmodium falciparum is traditionally linked to malaria-induced myocarditis, instances of Plasmodium vivax contributing to cardiac complications are documented. Regional perspectives reveal diverse cases, emphasizing the importance of considering malaria-induced myocarditis in endemic regions and beyond. Treatment outcomes underscore the efficacy of timely antimalarial therapy, advocating for integrated approaches to patient care. Diagnostic challenges, often complicated by overlapping symptoms with other cardiac conditions, highlight the need for heightened clinical suspicion. Addressing therapeutic challenges involves balancing antimalarial drugs, supportive care, and long-term monitoring. Future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the necessity for understanding host-parasite interactions, elucidating molecular mechanisms, and developing targeted diagnostic tools. Xeroderma pigmentosum group C (XPC) is a versatile protein crucial for sensing DNA damage in the global genome nucleotide excision repair (GG-NER) pathway. This pathway is vital for mammalian cells, acting as their essential approach for repairing DNA lesions stemming from interactions with environmental factors, such as exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Loss-of-function mutations in the XPC gene confer a photosensitive phenotype in XP-C patients, resulting in the accumulation of unrepaired UV-induced DNA damage. This remarkable increase in DNA damage tends to elevate by 10,000-fold the risk of developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. To date, creating accurate and reproducible models to study human XP-C disease has been an important challenge. To tackle this, we used CRISPR-Cas9 technology in order to knockout the XPC gene in various human skin cells (keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and melanocytes). After validation of the knockout in these edited skin cells, we showed that they recapitulate the major phenotypes of XPC mutations: photosensitivity and the impairment of UV-induced DNA damage repair. Moreover, these knockout cells demonstrated a reduced proliferative capacity compared to their respective controls. Finally, to better mimic the disease environment, we built a 3D reconstructed skin using these XPC knockout skin cells. This model exhibited an abnormal behavior, showing an extensive remodeling of its extracellular matrix compared to normal skin. Analyzing the composition of the fibroblast secretome revealed a significant augmented shift in the inflammatory response following XPC knockout. Our innovative "disease on a dish" approach can provide valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying XP-C disease, paving the way to design novel preventive and therapeutic strategies to alleviate the disease phenotype. Background: Nonverbal communication plays a pivotal role in the provision of effective patient care and has been associated with important patient health outcomes. Clinician posture, a nonverbal form of communication, may influence the patient experience and satisfaction. The relationship between clinician posture (i.e., standing or at the patient's eye level) and patient perceptions of clinician communication in the hospital—a setting with heightened power dynamics between patient and clinician—is currently unknown. Methods: We conducted searches of Ovid MEDLINE, EBSCO CINAHL Complete, EBSCO PsycInfo, Elsevier Embase/Embase Classic, Elsevier Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection up to May 2023. English language studies were included if they compared clinician posture (eye-level or standing) during adult inpatient (including emergency department) interactions. Two authors independently abstracted data from included studies and assessed risk of bias or quality of evidence. A third author arbitrated any disagreements. Studies reported adherence to the posture intervention and/or patient perception outcomes. The latter included encounter duration, preferences for posture type, perceptions of interaction quality and clinician communication and compassion, and standardized assessments of patient satisfaction. Results: Fourteen studies (six randomized controlled trials, four quasi-experimental studies, four observational studies) assessed clinician posture at the bedside. Ten noted at least one favorable outcome for clinicians who communicated at the patient's eye level, three revealed no differences in patient perceptions between standing and sitting, and one noted higher patient ratings for standing clinicians. Findings were limited by variation in interventions and outcomes, generally high risk of bias, and relatively low adherence to assigned posture groups. Discussion: Compared to standing, eye-level communication by clinicians appears beneficial. The magnitude and types of benefits clinicians and patients may gain from this behavior remain unclear given heterogeneity and generally high risk of bias in available studies. Architect-HIV Ag/Ab combo chemiluminescence assay is globally recognized for its sensitivity but has a notable false-positive rate. In this study, we aim to evaluate the performance of a new cost-effective screening alternative, the chemiluminescence Ag/Ab combo assay (CL-900i-HIV) from Mindray, China. We selected 195 archived samples categorized according to the INNO-LIA™ HIV I/II, the gold standard confirmatory assay. These samples included true positive (n = 38; positive by Architect-HIV & INNO-LIA-HIV), true negative (n = 101; negative by Architect-HIV & INNO-LIA-HIV), false positive (n = 20; positive by Architect-HIV & negative by INNO-LIA-HIV), and indeterminate results (n = 26). We tested all samples using the Mindray CL-900i-HIV and all positive Architect-HIV samples (n = 80) were confirmed by PCR. Compared to INNO-LIA™ HIVI/II line immunoassay confirmatory assay, Mindray CL-900i-HIV demonstrated a sensitivity of 100% (95% CI 90.7–100), specificity of 100% (95% CI 97.0–100), overall percent agreement (OPA) of 100% (95% CI 97.7–100.0), and perfect agreement with the INNO-LIA confirmatory assay (κ = 1.00). Additionally, Mindray's CL-900i-HIV exhibited a significantly lower false-positive rate (8.75%) compared to Architect-HIV's (55%). Mindray CL900i demonstrated high sensitivity and very low false-positive rate, thus, has the potential to serve as an excellent, cost-effective surrogate for HIV screening, overcoming the limitations of existing automated assays. The impact of Bariatric Surgery (BS) on maternal and neonatal outcomes among pregnant women is not fully understood, especially in comparison to different weight categories. The primary aim of this study is to assess the factors associated to women who have undergone BS. The study also investigates the maternal and neonatal outcomes amongst this group in comparison to the three Body Mass Index (BMI) groups (women with obesity, overweight and normal weight). A 12-month population-based retrospective study was conducted using registry data from the PEARL-Peristat Study at the Women's Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) in Qatar from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2017. Both univariate and multivariable regression analyses were employed to scrutinize risk factors and maternal and neonatal outcomes. The study included 6212 parturient women, of which 315 had a history of BS, while 5897 with no BS history. Qatari women, aged 35 and higher, with parity > 1, diabetes, and hypertension were more likely to be in the post-BS group. Women in the post-BS group were found to be more likely to have a cesarean delivery (37.5% vs. 24%, Adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR) = 1.59, CI 1.18–2.14), preterm babies (10% vs. 7%, aOR = 1.66, CI 1.06–2.59), and stillbirth (1.6% vs. 0.4%, aOR = 4.53, CI 1.33–15.50) compared to the normal weight women group. Moreover, post-BS women had a higher risk of low-birth-weight neonates than women with obesity (15% vs. 8%, aOR = 1.77, CI 1.153–2.73), overweight (15% vs. 7%, aOR = 1.63, CI 1.09–2.43), and normal weight (15% vs. 8%, aOR = 1.838, CI 1.23–2.75). Finally, women in the post-BS group were more likely to have low-birth-weight neonates amongst term babies than women with obesity and overweight. Pregnancies with post-BS should be considered a high-risk group for certain medical outcomes and should be monitored closely. Lung imaging techniques are crucial for managing ventilated patients in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs). Bedside chest x-ray has limitations such as low sensitivity and radiation exposure risks. Recently, lung ultrasound has emerged as a promising technology offering advantages such as real-time monitoring and radiation-free imaging. However, the integration of lung ultrasound into clinical practice raises questions about its impact on chest x-ray prescriptions. This study aims to assess whether implementing lung ultrasound reduces reliance on chest x-rays for ventilated pediatric patients in the PICU. This before-and-after uncontrolled quality improvement project was conducted from January 2022 to December 2023 in a referral PICU. The study included three phases: retrospective evaluation, learning phase, and prospective evaluation. Patients aged under 14 years, intubated, and ventilated for ≤ 30 days were included. Lung ultrasound was performed using a standardized protocol, and chest x-rays were conducted as per clinical indications. During the study period, 430 patients were admitted to the PICU, with 142 requiring mechanical ventilation. Implementation of routine bedside lung ultrasound led to a 39% reduction in chest x-ray requests (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant decrease in irradiation exposure and a 27% reduction in costs associated with chest x-rays. Conclusion: Routine bedside lung ultrasound is a valuable tool in the modern PICU, it reduces the number of chest x-rays, with reduced radiation exposure and a potential cost savings. The experimental measurement of density and enthalpy of mixture for two binary liquid mixtures of n-tridecane or n-tetradecane with decalin was reported in this paper. The measurements were conducted at a temperature range of 293.15–323.15 K and at 303.15 K using calorimeter C80. The mixtures were analyzed at various proportions, including the entire composition range and dilute solutions. The excess molar volume (VE) and excess molar enthalpy (HE) of mixtures were calculated and fitted using the Redlich–Kister equation. The paper observed the expansion phenomenon for the VE at all temperatures, including over the entire composition range and dilute solutions. Additionally, the HE exhibited endothermic behavior at the studied temperature range and composition range. The Prigogine–Flory–Patterson (PFP) theory was utilized to predict both thermodynamic properties, namely the VE and HE. The results obtained using the PFP theory were compared with those obtained using the Treszczanowicz and Benson association (TB) model for VE and with the NRTL, Wilson, and Flory models for HE. The PFP model, which employed a single-fitted parameter to describe VE, demonstrated satisfactory performance in predicting VE. Conversely, the Treszczanowicz and Benson association (TB) model yielded relatively poor results in fitting VE. Spinel oxides are a type of material that can be used in a wide range of applications, such as photocatalysis, hydrogen production and environmental protection. In this respect, calcium aluminate (CaAl2O4) and chromate (CaCr2O4) spinels were synthesized in this study by the coprecipitation method using potash solution as a precipitant. CaAl2O4 and CaCr2O4 spinels were annealed at 900 and 1100°C, respectively, for different periods. The obtained spinels were first characterized by thermal analysis, and the phase composition of the oxides was analysed using X-ray diffraction. Hydroxyl groups and absorbed water in the obtained precipitates disappeared after calcination and were observed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. BET and SEM/EDS analyses were also used to determine the total surface area of the powder particles, the size of the grains and the morphology of the powders of the synthesized nanoparticles, respectively. The structural and morphological analyses revealed the formation of single-phase CaAl2O4 and dual-phase CaCr2O4, with specific surfaces for each spinel of 44.2165 and 5.7190 m2 g−1, respectively. Moreover, DFT calculations were performed on the materials, and the direct bandgaps of these spinels were found to be 4.365 eV for CaAl2O4 and 2.256 eV for CaCr2O4. The results indicated that different compositions led to different optical bandgaps. Finally, the results indicate that due to the suitable characteristics and properties of the produced spinel oxides, they are among the promising materials that may be employed as semiconductors for various applications. In the current research, synthesized Se-NPs were loaded into sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol SA/PVA blend, 1:2 (w:w), with different proportions to form nanocomposite films by using the solution casting method. The main goal is to enhance the physical and antibacterial properties of the polymer blend; therefore, it can be utilized for wound dressing applications. The physical aspects of the prepared films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), atomic force microscope (AFM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), UV–Vis spectroscopic technique, and mechanical analysis to show the effect of increasing the concentration of Se-NPs from zero to 0.5 wt% on their properties. Regarding the XRD analysis, the calculated values of lattice strain (ε ) increased from 0.005 to 0.013. The FTIR absorption spectrum recorded an intensity reduction and position shift in the main characteristic peaks of SA/PVA. The morphology of Se-NPs revealed a spherical shape with a mean diameter of 131.76 nm, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The surface morphological images showed the appearance of a few cracks; besides, the average roughness increased from 1.59 to 2.08 nm. According to the UV–Vis spectroscopic analysis, the optical band gap reduces (from 5.425 to 5.216 eV) for the direct transition and from (5.07–4.78 eV) for the indirect transition, which is an indication of the interaction between Se-NPs and SA/PVA blend. Young's modulus, tensile strength, and yield strength of the films increased with the addition of selenium nanoparticles. On the other hand, the amount of selenium release significantly increased with enhancing the concentration of Se-NPs in SA/PVA blend film from 0.1 to 0.5 wt%. Additionally, the inclusion of Se-NPs supplied the polymer blend with excellent antimicrobial activity, which would remove the possibility of microbial infection at the wound site. Moreover, the prepared SA/PVA/Se nanocomposite films have good biocompatibility with Human Skin Fibroblast (HSF). The Electric Vehicle (EV) has numerous environmental and socio-economic benefits. This paper presents the performance of connecting EV to the adjusted grid distribution system based on an Automatic Variac Transformer (AVT). AVT is used as an automatic AC Feeder for the EV with no rectification unit (offboard) and for the EV with a rectification unit (on-board). Using electronic switches in AVT allowed obtaining multiple output voltages according to the conditions of connecting the switches and the voltage required to charge EVs which led to the use of EV charging stations as a smart load. The behavior of the electrical system has been presented under two cases (on-board and off-board) based on the scenarios of electronic switch connection for the automatic Variac Transformer. The modeling system has been built using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The results regarding the voltage level and power demand for EV have been analyzed. The voltage and current ripple were 11.1% and 30.5% for plug one and plug two respectively, in addition, the voltage and current ripple were 14.8% and 16.7% for plug three and plug four respectively. Based on a sample of companies from G7 countries, we investigate the effect of eco-innovation on waste management as well as the moderating role of firms' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) on this relationship. Our findings indicate that a higher level of eco-innovation might lead to a decline in firms' total waste produced and an increase in firms' magnitude of reusing and recycling waste. Likewise, our findings are associative with a moderating effect of ESG on the eco-innovation-waste management nexus. We argue that eco-innovation, along with better ESG performance, leads to a reduction in waste produced and thus better business waste management. Our study has several implications on micro- and macroeconomic levels. Proline is widely known as the only proteogenic amino acid with a secondary amine. In addition to its crucial role in protein structure, the secondary amino acid modulates neurotransmission and regulates the kinetics of signaling proteins. To understand the structural basis of proline import, we solved the structure of the proline transporter SIT1 in complex with the COVID-19 viral receptor ACE2 by cryo-electron microscopy. The structure of pipecolate-bound SIT1 reveals the specific sequence requirements for proline transport in the SLC6 family and how this protein excludes amino acids with extended side chains. By comparing apo and substrate-bound SIT1 states, we also identify the structural changes that link substrate release and opening of the cytoplasmic gate and provide an explanation for how a missense mutation in the transporter causes iminoglycinuria. The SIT1-ACE2 complex transports the amino acid proline and is the receptor of SARS-CoV-2. Limited data exist on viral hepatitis among migrant populations. This study investigated the prevalence of current hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and lifetime hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection among Qatar's migrant craft and manual workers (CMWs), constituting 60% of the country's population. Sera collected during a nationwide COVID-19 population-based cross-sectional survey on CMWs between July 26 and September 9, 2020, underwent testing for HBsAg and HCV antibodies. Reactive samples underwent confirmatory testing, and logistic regression analyses were employed to explore associations with HBV and HCV infections. Among 2528 specimens tested for HBV infection, 15 were reactive, with 8 subsequently confirmed positive. Three samples lacked sufficient sera for confirmatory testing but were included in the analysis through multiple imputations. Prevalence of current HBV infection was 0.4% (95% CI 0.2–0.7%). Educational attainment and occupation were significantly associated with current HBV infection. For HCV infection, out of 2607 specimens tested, 46 were reactive, and 23 were subsequently confirmed positive. Prevalence of lifetime HCV infection was 0.8% (95% CI 0.5–1.2%). Egyptians exhibited the highest prevalence at 6.5% (95% CI 3.1–13.1%), followed by Pakistanis at 3.1% (95% CI 1.1–8.0%). Nationality, geographic location, and occupation were significantly associated with lifetime HCV infection. Introduction: To assess the impact of kidney function in patients with BPH undergoing surgery prior to Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP), Laser enucleation of the prostate (LEP), and Laser Vaporization of the prostate (LVP) on operative and post-operative outcomes using the ACS-NSQIP database. Methods: The ACS-NSQIP database was reviewed for patients that underwent TURP, LEP and LVP for treatment of patients with BPH between the years of 2008 and 2021. Demographics, comorbidities, bleeding disorders, operative time, and surgical procedure performed were collected for comparison between Kidney function groups: G1, normal/high function; G2-G3, mild/moderate kidney disease; and G4-G5, severe kidney disease. The 30-day peri-operative complications were measured and a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed while adjusting for all confounding variables. Propensity score matching was performed between the G1 and G4-G5 cohorts. Results: A total of 83,020 patients were included. On multivariable regression, in the G2-G3 cohort, patients were at significantly increased risk for renal complications with OR = 2.43[1.56–3.79]. After propensity score matching, the G4-G5 cohort showed increased odds of pneumonia OR = 4.02[1.343–12.056], renal complications with OR = 7.62[2.283–25.411], cardiac complications OR = 4.53[1.531–13.411], and sepsis/septic shock OR = 1.76[1.091–2.834]. They also had a higher need for blood transfusion OR = 3.58[2.242–5.714], and prolonged hospital stay with OR = 1.49[1.296–1.723]. Conclusion: Pre-operative kidney disease may pose an increased risk of complications for patients undergoing endoscopic BPH surgery. The literature lacks information on the effect of pre-operative kidney disease on endoscopic BPH surgeries. Background: Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) have gained interest due to their availability, efficiency, and their cost-effectiveness. Betaine is an essential methyl donor and takes part in various physiological activities inside the body; it is found to have protective and curative effects against various liver diseases. The present study aimed to evaluate the hepatotoxic effect of CuO-NPs on adult male albino rats and the ability of betaine to alleviate such hepatotoxicity. Methods: Forty adult male albino Wister rats were grouped into 4 groups (10 rats/group): group I a negative control, group II (CuO-NPs) injected with CuO-NPs intra peritoneal by insulin needle (0.5 mg/kg/day), group III (betaine + CuO-NPs) administered betaine orally by gavage needle (250 mg/kg/day 1 h before CuO-NPs) and CuO-NPs (0.5 mg/kg/day) finally, group IV (betaine) administered betaine orally by gavage needle (250 mg/kg/day) for consecutive 28 days. Blood and liver samples were gathered and processed for biochemical, molecular, histopathological, and immunohistochemical investigations. Results: Group II displayed a marked rise in alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Furthermore, there is an excessive upregulation of the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). On the other hand, substantial reduction in glutathione (GSH) levels and significant downregulation at glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mRNA gene expression. Regarding the histopathological deviations, there were severe congestion, dilatation and hyalinization of blood vessels, steatosis, hydropic degeneration, hepatocytic necrosis, increased binucleation, degenerated bile ducts, hyperplasia of ducts epithelial lining, and inflammatory cells infiltration. Immunohistochemically, there was a pronounced immunoreactivity toward IL-1β. Luckily, the pre-administration of betaine was able to mitigate these changes. MDA was dramatically reduced, resulting in the downregulation of IL-1β and TNF-α. Additionally, there was a considerable rise in GSH levels and an upregulation of GPx. Histopathological deviations were substantially improved as diminished dilatation, hyalinization and congestion of blood vessels, hepatocytes, and bile ducts are normal to some extent. In addition, IL-1β immunohistochemical analysis revealed marked decreased intensity. Conclusion: Betaine can effectively reduce the hepatotoxicity caused by CuO-NPs via its antioxidant properties and its ability to stimulate the cell redox system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modern pavement management systems depend mainly on pavement condition assessment to plan rehabilitation strategies. Manual inspection is performed by trained inspectors to assess pavement damages conventionally. This can be cost-intensive, time-consuming, and a source of risk for inspectors. An image-based inspection using a smartphone is adopted to overcome such problems. This paper proposes an automatic crack detection and mapping program for rigid pavement, which can automate the visual inspection process. The program uses Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data recorded by smartphones and various image processing techniques to detect crack lengths and areas in images. The performance of the program was evaluated by a field study. A crack quantification process was performed to compare the manually measured values and crack lengths obtained from the program. The results show that the program can detect other types of distress, such as pop-outs and punch-outs. This method can achieve satisfactory performance compared to the effort and costs spent. Glioblastoma is a highly heterogeneous disease, with variations observed at both phenotypical and molecular levels. Personalized therapies would be facilitated by non-invasive in vivo approaches for characterizing this heterogeneity. In this study, we developed unsupervised joint machine learning between radiomic and genomic data, thereby identifying distinct glioblastoma subtypes. A retrospective cohort of 571 IDH-wildtype glioblastoma patients were included in the study, and pre-operative multi-parametric MRI scans and targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) data were collected. L21-norm minimization was used to select a subset of 12 radiomic features from the MRI scans, and 13 key driver genes from the five main signal pathways most affected in glioblastoma were selected from the genomic data. Subtypes were identified using a joint learning approach called Anchor-based Partial Multi-modal Clustering on both radiomic and genomic modalities. Kaplan–Meier analysis identified three distinct glioblastoma subtypes: high-risk, medium-risk, and low-risk, based on overall survival outcome (p < 0.05, log-rank test; Hazard Ratio = 1.64, 95% CI 1.17–2.31, Cox proportional hazard model on high-risk and low-risk subtypes). The three subtypes displayed different phenotypical and molecular characteristics in terms of imaging histogram, co-occurrence of genes, and correlation between the two modalities. Our findings demonstrate the synergistic value of integrated radiomic signatures and molecular characteristics for glioblastoma subtyping. Joint learning on both modalities can aid in better understanding the molecular basis of phenotypical signatures of glioblastoma, and provide insights into the biological underpinnings of tumor formation and progression. In this research, we examined the mediating effect (decision-making) between governance mechanisms captured by organizational culture and compensation systems (local and/or national criteria bonuses) of public higher education institutions and their efficiency, through an empirical study based on correlational investigation. To identify the relationship between governance mechanisms: organizational culture and compensation systems (local and/or national criteria bonuses), decision-making, and efficiency of public higher education institutions, we selected a sample of 19 public higher education institutions in Sfax for the periods 2017–2020 and 2020–2023. The obtained results revealed that the attribute of organizational culture (captured by student life) and compensation systems (local and/or national criteria bonuses) indirectly affect the efficiency of university institutions through decision-making. Background : Research investigating substance use among Arab Americans is very limited. The purpose of this study is to determine rates of substance use among Arab American young adults. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed in Dearborn, MI, and surrounding cities. The survey measured substance use among Arab Americans aged 18–30 within a community in Michigan. Results: The analytic sample included 423 respondents. The rate of hookah "ever users" was highest followed by alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana at 55%, 33%, 29%, and 28%, respectively. Rates of "current use" for these four substances also followed an identical order. Of note, rates of "ever use" for prescription stimulants, E-cigarettes, and opioid use were 19%, 12%, and 11.2%, respectively. The use of tobacco products, alcohol, and marijuana use among males was significantly higher when compared to females. Conclusions: Near or above national average rates of substance use lends credence to the importance of this issue within Arab American communities. Tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use are multifactorial issues requiring increased attention and further exploration into factors associated with substance use, including potential stigma and the challenges of cultural acceptability. This study reviews initial coin offerings (ICOs) based on 80 empirical studies from 2018 to 2022. We apply a blend of bibliometric and content analysis to consolidate ICOs' prior findings, track the evolutionary impact, and explore the semantic discourse and underlying theories in entrepreneurial finance. The content analysis concludes with five main streams that extensively explain the advent of ICOs, main features, embedded technologies, pricing, valuation, regulatory frameworks, frauds, and scams. Purpose: While the T2-FLAIR mismatch sign is highly specific for isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant, 1p/19q-noncodeleted astrocytomas among lower-grade gliomas, its utility in WHO grade 4 gliomas is not well-studied. We derived the partial T2-FLAIR mismatch sign as an imaging biomarker for IDH mutation in WHO grade 4 gliomas. Methods: Preoperative MRI scans of adult WHO grade 4 glioma patients (n = 2165) from the multi-institutional ReSPOND (Radiomics Signatures for PrecisiON Diagnostics) consortium were analyzed. Diagnostic performance of the partial T2-FLAIR mismatch sign was evaluated. Subset analyses were performed to assess associations of imaging markers with overall survival (OS). Results: One hundred twenty-one (5.6%) of 2165 grade 4 gliomas were IDH-mutant. Partial T2-FLAIR mismatch was present in 40 (1.8%) cases, 32 of which were IDH-mutant, yielding 26.4% sensitivity, 99.6% specificity, 80.0% positive predictive value, and 95.8% negative predictive value. Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated IDH mutation was significantly associated with partial T2-FLAIR mismatch (odds ratio [OR] 5.715, 95% CI [1.896, 17.221], p = 0.002), younger age (OR 0.911 [0.895, 0.927], p < 0.001), tumor centered in frontal lobe (OR 3.842, [2.361, 6.251], p < 0.001), absence of multicentricity (OR 0.173, [0.049, 0.612], p = 0.007), and presence of cystic (OR 6.596, [3.023, 14.391], p < 0.001) or non-enhancing solid components (OR 6.069, [3.371, 10.928], p < 0.001). Multivariate Cox analysis demonstrated cystic components (p = 0.024) and non-enhancing solid components (p = 0.003) were associated with longer OS, while older age (p < 0.001), frontal lobe center (p = 0.008), multifocality (p < 0.001), and multicentricity (p < 0.001) were associated with shorter OS. Buildings' segmentation is a fundamental task in the field of earth observation and aerial imagery analysis. Most existing deep learning-based methods in the literature can be applied to a fixed or narrow-range spatial resolution imagery. In practical scenarios, users deal with a broad spectrum of image resolutions. Thus, a given aerial image often needs to be re-sampled to match the spatial resolution of the dataset used to train the deep learning model, which results in a degradation in segmentation performance. To overcome this challenge, we propose, in this manuscript, scale-invariant neural network (Sci-Net) architecture that segments buildings from wide-range spatial resolution aerial images. Specifically, our approach leverages UNet hierarchical representation and dense atrous spatial pyramid pooling to extract fine-grained multi-scale representations. Sci-Net significantly outperforms state-of-the-art models on the open cities AI and the multi-scale building datasets with a steady improvement margin across different spatial resolutions. Thin films Bi4Ti3O12 (BLT) were deposited using electron beam evaporation on silicon substrate at several times, also on AlN/Si and SiO2/Si substrates. Thin films morphology and thickness were measured via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallography was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique for films which have a (0010) preferred orientation in all substrate types. The capacitance values were contingent on frequency value in C-V measurement. The ferroelectric characterization was investigated for BLT film deposited on isolator layer (SiO2 or AlN) for Al/Bi4Ti3O12/SiO2/Si devices. In this study, we examined the impact of the mediator effect (decision-making) between the scientific council, as a governance mechanism, of public higher education institutions and their efficiency, through an empirical study based on a correlational investigation. Such studies are numerous and widely discussed for for-profit organizations, using linear regression techniques to examine the relationship between firm structure and composition and performance. However, for nonprofit organizations, such as public higher education institutions, studies are rare. To identify the relationship between the scientific council, decision-making, and the efficiency of public higher education institutions, we selected a sample of 19 public higher education institutions in Sfax for the period of 2017–2020 and 2020–2023. The results revealed that the university governance mechanism, namely the attribute of the scientific council (except for the "age" variable), indirectly affects the efficiency of university institutions through decision-making. Recyclable and biodegradable microelectronics, i.e., "green" electronics, are emerging as a viable solution to the global challenge of electronic waste. Specifically, flexible circuit boards represent a prime target for materials development and increasing the utility of green electronics in biomedical applications. Circuit board substrates and packaging are good dielectrics, mechanically and thermally robust, and are compatible with microfabrication processes. Poly(octamethylene maleate (anhydride) citrate) (POMaC) – a citric acid-based elastomer with tunable degradation and mechanical properties – presents a promising alternative for circuit board substrates and packaging. Here, we report the characterization of Elastomeric Circuit Boards (ECBs). Synthesis and processing conditions were optimized to achieve desired degradation and mechanical properties for production of stretchable circuits. ECB traces were characterized and exhibited sheet resistance of 0.599 Ω cm−2, crosstalk distance of <0.6 mm, and exhibited stable 0% strain resistances after 1000 strain cycles to 20%. Purpose: Autologous tumor lysate-loaded dendritic cell vaccine (DCVax-L) is a promising treatment modality for glioblastomas. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential utility of multiparametric MRI-based prediction model in evaluating treatment response in glioblastoma patients treated with DCVax-L. Methods: Seventeen glioblastoma patients treated with standard-of-care therapy + DCVax-L were included. When tumor progression (TP) was suspected and repeat surgery was being contemplated, we sought to ascertain the number of cases correctly classified as TP + mixed response or pseudoprogression (PsP) from multiparametric MRI-based prediction model using histopathology/mRANO criteria as ground truth. Multiparametric MRI model consisted of predictive probabilities (PP) of tumor progression computed from diffusion and perfusion MRI-derived parameters. A comparison of overall survival (OS) was performed between patients treated with standard-of-care therapy + DCVax-L and standard-of-care therapy alone (external controls). Additionally, Kaplan–Meier analyses were performed to compare OS between two groups of patients using PsP, Ki-67, and MGMT promoter methylation status as stratification variables. Results: Multiparametric MRI model correctly predicted TP + mixed response in 72.7% of cases (8/11) and PsP in 83.3% (5/6) with an overall concordance rate of 76.5% with final diagnosis as determined by histopathology/mRANO criteria. There was a significant concordant correlation coefficient between PP values and histopathology/mRANO criteria (r = 0.54; p = 0.026). DCVax-L-treated patients had significantly prolonged OS than those treated with standard-of-care therapy (22.38 ± 12.8 vs. 13.8 ± 9.5 months, p = 0.040). Additionally, glioblastomas with PsP, MGMT promoter methylation status, and Ki-67 values below median had longer OS than their counterparts. Background and Objective : Determination of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) 1/2 mutational status is crucial for a glioma diagnosis. It is common for IDH mutational status to be determined via a two-step algorithm that utilizes immunohistochemistry studies for IDH1 R132H, the most frequent variant, followed by next-generation sequencing studies for immunohistochemistry-negative or immunohistochemistry-equivocal cases. The objective of this study was to evaluate adding a rapid real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay to the testing algorithm. Methods: We validated a modified, commercial, qualitative, RT-PCR assay with the ability to detect 14 variants in IDH1/2 in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded glioma tumor specimens. The assay was validated using 51 tumor formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens. During clinical implementation of this assay, 48 brain tumor specimens were assessed for IDH result concordance and turnaround time to result. Results: Concordance between the RT-PCR and sequencing and IHC studies was 100%. This RT-PCR assay also showed concordant results with IHC for IDH1 R132H for 11 of the 12 (92%) tumor specimens with IDH mutations. The RT-PCR assay yielded faster results (average 2.6 days turnaround time) in comparison to sequencing studies (17.9 days), with complete concordance. Conclusions: In summary, we report that this RT-PCR assay can reliably be performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded specimens and has a faster turnaround time than sequencing assays and can be clinically implemented for determination of IDH mutation status for patients with glioma. The use of Essential Oil (EO) as an antimicrobial agent has been widely used since antiquity, and interest has grown due to the resistance of microorganisms to drugs. This study aims to evaluate the chemical composition of Algerian Citrus limon peel EO and its antifungal activity against dermatophyte strains, according to the harvest period. EO from C. limon peel harvested during four different periods (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn) was extracted by hydrodistillation Clevenger type and analyzed by GC/MS. Antifungal activity was evaluated against four dermatophyte strains (Trichophyton rubrum, Microsporum canis, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Microsporum gypseum) using the disc diffusion and agar dilution methods. The yield of EO from C. limon peel varied from 1.54 to 2.43% (w/w), the highest yield was obtained in Autumn and the lowest in Summer, the EOs were mainly composed of limonene (43.45–58.75%) followed by β-pinene (4.73–13.23%) and γ-terpinene (8.06–11.04%). The assessment of the antifungal activity showed that C. limon peel EO has a strong antifungal activity against the tested strains, with inhibition zones ranging from 16.63 ± 0,38 to 90.00 ± 00 mm, and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) from 0.6 to 5 mg/mL and Minimal Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) from 1.25 to 10 mg/mL. Spring harvest EO was relatively more effective in terms of MIC (0.6–2.5 mg/mL) and MFC (1.25–2.5 mg/mL). The EO of C. limon peel showed a seasonal change in the chemical composition and the antifungal activity, also revealed a high antifungal potential, and can be used for the treatment of fungal infections caused by dermatophytes. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) engenders traumatic necrosis and penumbra—areas of secondary neural injury which are crucial targets for therapeutic interventions. Segmenting manually areas of ongoing changes like necrosis, edema, hematoma, and inflammation is tedious, error-prone, and biased. Using the multi-parametric MR data from a rodent model study, we demonstrate the effectiveness of an end-end deep learning global-attention-based UNet (GA-UNet) framework for automatic segmentation and quantification of TBI lesions. Longitudinal MR scans (2 h, 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days) were performed on eight Sprague–Dawley rats after controlled cortical injury was performed. TBI lesion and sub-regions segmentation was performed using 3D-UNet and GA-UNet. Dice statistics (DSI) and Hausdorff distance were calculated to assess the performance. MR scan variations-based (bias, noise, blur, ghosting) data augmentation was performed to develop a robust model. Training/validation median DSI for U-Net was 0.9368 with T2w and MPRAGE inputs, whereas GA-UNet had 0.9537 for the same. Testing accuracies were higher for GA-UNet than U-Net with a DSI of 0.8232 for the T2w-MPRAGE inputs. Longitudinally, necrosis remained constant while oligemia and penumbra decreased, and edema appearing around day 3 which increased with time. Congenital anomalies (CAs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in early life. We aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of major CAs in the State of Qatar. A population-based retrospective data analysis of registry data retrieved from the Perinatal Neonatal Outcomes Research Study in the Arabian Gulf (PEARL-Peristat Study) between April 2017 and March 2018. The sample included 25,204 newborn records, which were audited between April 2017 and March 2018, of which 25,073 live births were identified and included in the study. Maternal risk factors and neonatal outcomes were assessed for association with specific CAs, including chromosomal/genetic, central nervous system (CNS), cardiovascular system (CVS), facial, renal, multiple congenital anomalies (MCAs) using univariate and multivariate analyses. The incidence of any CA among live births was 1.3% (n = 332). The most common CAs were CVS (n = 117; 35%), MCAs (n = 69, 21%), chromosomal/genetic (51; 15%), renal (n = 39; 12%), CNS (n = 20; 6%), facial (14, 4%), and other (GIT, Resp, Urogenital, Skeletal) (n = 22, 7%) anomalies. Multivariable regression analysis showed that multiple pregnancies, parity ≥ 1, maternal BMI, and demographic factors (mother's age and ethnicity, and infant's gender) were associated with various specific CAs. In-hospital mortality rate due to CAs was estimated to be 15.4%. CAs were significantly associated with high rates of caesarean deliveries (aOR 1.51; 95% CI 1.04–2.19), Apgar < 7 at 1 min (aOR 5.44; 95% CI 3.10–9.55), Apgar < 7 at 5 min (aOR 17.26; 95% CI 6.31–47.18), in-hospital mortality (aOR 76.16; 37.96–152.8), admission to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) or perinatal death of neonate in labor room (LR)/operation theatre (OT) (aOR 34.03; 95% CI 20.51–56.46), prematurity (aOR 4.17; 95% CI 2.75–6.32), and low birth weight (aOR 5.88; 95% CI 3.92–8.82) before and after adjustment for the significant risk factors. This is the first study to assess the incidence, maternal risk factors, and neonatal outcomes associated with CAs in the state of Qatar. Therefore, a specialized congenital anomaly data registry is needed to identify risk factors and outcomes. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify predictors for focal disease in human brucellosis. The study included patients with brucellosis diagnosed between January 2000 and December 2021. Overall, 247 patients were identified. Focal disease was diagnosed in 64 (25.9%) patients. The most common focal infection was bone and joint in 56 patients (23.4%). Disease duration > 14 days was significantly associated with focal illness [OR = 2.2 (1.08–4.47), p = 0.030], although febrile illness was inversely associated with focal illness this did not reach statistical significance [OR = 0.46 (0.21–1.00), p = 0.050]. Technological tools can redesign traditional approaches to radiology education, for example, with simulation cases and via computer-generated feedback. In this study, we investigated the use of an AI-powered, Bayesian inference-based clinical decision support (CDS) software to provide automated "real-time" feedback to trainees during interpretation of clinical and simulation brain MRI examinations. Radiology trainees participated in sessions in which they interpreted 3 brain MRIs: two cases from a routine clinical worklist (one without and one with CDS) and a teaching file-based simulation case with CDS. The CDS software required trainees to input imaging features and differential diagnoses, after which inferred diagnoses were displayed, and the case was reviewed with an attending neuroradiologist. An observer timed each case, including time spent on education, and trainees completed a survey rating their confidence in their findings and the educational value of the case. Ten trainees reviewed 75 brain MRI examinations during 25 reading sessions. Trainees had slightly lower confidence in their findings and diagnosis and rated the educational value slightly higher for simulation cases with CDS compared to clinical cases without CDS (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in ratings of clinical cases with or without CDS. No differences in overall timing were found among the reading scenarios. Simulation cases with "CDS-provided feedback" may improve the educational value of interpreting imaging studies at a workstation without adding additional time. Further investigation will help drive innovation in trainee education, which may be particularly relevant in this era of increasing remote work and asynchronous attending review. Purpose: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumor in older adults (Ostrom et al. in Neuro Oncol 21(Suppl 5):v1–v100, 2019). Treatment is largely driven by, in addition to patient characteristics and extent of resection/Simpson grade, the World Health Organization (WHO) grading of meningiomas. The current grading scheme, based predominantly on histologic features and only limited molecular characterization of these tumors (WHO Classification of Tumours Editorial Board, in: Central nervous system tumours, International Agency for Research on Cancer, Lyon, 2021), (Mirian et al. in J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry 91(4):379–387, 2020), does not consistently reflect the biologic behavior of meningiomas. This leads to both under-treatment and over-treatment of patients, and hence, suboptimal outcomes (Rogers et al. in Neuro Oncol 18(4):565–574). The goal of this review is to synthesize studies to date investigating molecular features of meningiomas as they relate to patient outcomes, in order to clarify best practices in assessing and, therefore, treating meningiomas. Methods: The available literature of genomic landscape and molecular features of in meningioma was screened using PubMed. Results: Greater understanding of meningiomas is reached by integrating histopathology, mutational analysis, DNA copy number changes, DNA methylation profiles, and potentially additional modalities to fully capture the clinical and biologic heterogeneity of these tumors. Conclusion: Diagnosis and classification of meningioma is best accomplished using a combination of histopathology with genomic and epigenomic factors. High-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP) is a recently recognized glioma type whose classification is dependent on its global epigenetic signature. HGAP is characterized by alterations in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, often co-occurring with CDKN2A/B homozygous deletion and/or ATRX mutation. Experience with HGAP is limited and to better understand this tumor type, we evaluated an expanded cohort of patients (n = 144) with these tumors, as defined by DNA methylation array testing, with a subset additionally evaluated by next-generation sequencing (NGS). Among evaluable cases, we confirmed the high prevalence CDKN2A/B homozygous deletion, and/or ATRX mutations/loss in this tumor type, along with a subset showing NF1 alterations. Five of 93 (5.4%) cases sequenced harbored TP53 mutations and RNA fusion analysis identified a single tumor containing an NTRK2 gene fusion, neither of which have been previously reported in HGAP. Clustering analysis revealed the presence of three distinct HGAP subtypes (or groups = g) based on whole-genome DNA methylation patterns, which we provisionally designated as gNF1 (n = 18), g1 (n = 72), and g2 (n = 54) (median ages 43.5 years, 47 years, and 32 years, respectively). Subtype gNF1 is notable for enrichment with patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (33.3%, p = 0.0008), confinement to the posterior fossa, hypermethylation in the NF1 enhancer region, a trend towards decreased progression-free survival (p = 0.0579), RNA processing pathway dysregulation, and elevated non-neoplastic glia and neuron cell content (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.0001, respectively). Purpose: Prostate cancer patients tend to be older with multiple comorbidities and are thus at increased risk for postoperative cardiovascular events after radical prostatectomy (RP). Thus, proper patient selection strategies are essential to decide for or against a surgical approach. We aimed to derive a prostatectomy specific index (PSI) for patients undergoing RP and compare its performance to universally used indices. Methods: The cohort was derived from National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database between 2005 and 2012. The primary outcome was incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events at 30 days post-surgery including: death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. A multivariable logistic regression model was constructed, performance and calibration were evaluated using a ROC analysis and the Hosmer–Lemeshow test, the PSI index was derived and compared to the RCRI and AUB-HAS2 indices. Results: A total of 17,299 patients were included in our cohort, with a mean age of 62 ± 7.4 years. Seventy three patients had a cardiac event post RP. The final PSI index encompassed six variables: history of heart disease, age, anemia, American society of anesthesiology class, surgical approach, and hypertension. The PSI ROC analysis provided C-statistic = 0.72, calibration R2 = 0.99 and proper goodness of fit. In comparison, the C-statistics of RCRI and AUB-HAS2 were found to be 0.57 and 0.65, respectively (p value < 0.001). Conclusion: The PSI model is a procedure tailored index for prediction of major cardiovascular events post RP. Pediatric ependymoma is a devastating brain cancer marked by its relapsing pattern and lack of effective chemotherapies. This shortage of treatments is due to limited knowledge about ependymoma tumorigenic mechanisms. By means of single-nucleus chromatin accessibility and gene expression profiling of posterior fossa primary tumors and distal metastases, we reveal key transcription factors and enhancers associated with the differentiation of ependymoma tumor cells into tumor-derived cell lineages and their transition into a mesenchymal-like state. We identify NFκB, AP-1, and MYC as mediators of this transition, and show that the gene expression profiles of tumor cells and infiltrating microglia are consistent with abundant pro-inflammatory signaling between these populations. In line with these results, both TGF-β1 and TNF-α induce the expression of mesenchymal genes on a patient-derived cell model, and TGF-β1 leads to an invasive phenotype. Altogether, these data suggest that tumor gliosis induced by inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress underlies the mesenchymal phenotype of posterior fossa ependymoma. Rapid and accurate measurement of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2)-specific neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) is paramount for monitoring immunity in infected and vaccinated subjects. The current gold standard relies on pseudovirus neutralization tests which require sophisticated skills and facilities. Alternatively, recent competitive immunoassays measuring anti-SARS-CoV-2 nAbs are proposed as a quick and commercially available surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT). Here, we report the performance evaluation of three sVNTs, including two ELISA-based assays and an automated bead-based immunoassay for detecting nAbs against SARS-CoV-2. The performance of three sVNTs, including GenScript cPass, Dynamiker, and Mindray NTAb was assessed in samples collected from SARS-CoV-2 infected patients (n = 160), COVID-19 vaccinated individuals (n = 163), and pre-pandemic controls (n = 70). Samples were collected from infected patients and vaccinated individuals 2–24 weeks after symptoms onset or second dose administration. Correlation analysis with pseudovirus neutralization test (pVNT) and immunoassays detecting anti-SARS-CoV-2 binding antibodies was performed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was generated to assess the optimal threshold for detecting nAbs by each assay. All three sVNTs showed an excellent performance in terms of specificity (100%) and sensitivity (100%, 97.0%, and 97.1% for GenScript, Dynamiker, and Mindray, respectively) in samples collected from vaccinated subjects. GenScript demonstrated the strongest correlation with pVNT (r = 0.743, R2 = 0.552), followed by Mindray (r = 0.718, R2 = 0.515) and Dynamiker (r = 0.608, R2 = 0.369). Correlation with anti-SARS-CoV-2 binding antibodies was variable, but the strongest correlations were observed between anti-RBD IgG antibodies and Mindray (r = 0.952, R2 = 0.907). ROC curve analyses demonstrated excellent performance for all three sVNT assays in both groups, with an AUC ranging between 0.99 and 1.0 (p < 0.0001). Also, it was shown that the manufacturer's recommended cutoff values could be modified based on the tested cohort without significantly affecting the sVNT performance. The sVNT provides a rapid, low-cost, and scalable alternative to conventional neutralization assays for measuring and expanding nAbs testing across various research and clinical settings. In this study, we have investigated theoretically the third-order nonlinear susceptibility associated with intersubband transition in a GaN/GaN/InxGa1−xN/GaN quantum dot-quantum well (QD-QW) structure, emphasizing the influence of the shell thickness, indium concentration and applied electric field F. The wave functions and eigenenergies of confined electrons have been theoretically computed under the effective mass approximation and the compact matrix density. The numerical result show that the intensity and position peak of susceptibility are considerably affected by the geometrical parameters, the applied electric filed and the indium concentration.
