Objectives: To evaluate grayscale US combined with contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the preoperative differentiation between benign and malignant ovarian masses in a pediatric population. Materials and methods: This retrospective study enrolled patients who underwent grayscale US and CEUS before surgery because of ovarian masses between July 2018 and September 2023, with available histopathologic or follow-up results. Two senior radiologists summarized the grayscale US and CEUS characteristics of all ovarian masses, including percentage of solidity, ascites, vascularity, and enhanced vessel morphology. These characteristics were then independently reviewed by radiologists with different experience to assess interobserver agreement. Diagnostic performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), while interobserver agreement was evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: A total of 26 children (median age: 10.1 [7.5, 11.7] years; age range: 0–14 years; benign: 15 patients) were included. The main characteristics of malignant ovarian tumors were abundant blood flow and twisted blood vessels within the mass, enhanced portion of the mass over 50 percent (all p < 0.001). The grayscale US combined with CEUS showed better diagnostic performance than the grayscale US alone (AUC = 0.99 [95% CI: 0.95, 1.00] vs AUC = 0.70 [95% CI: 0.50, 0.90] p < 0.001). A statistically significant AUC before and after CEUS was also shown between two junior radiologists (0.75 vs 0.92 and 0.69 vs 0.86, respectively, both p < 0.05). ICC of CEUS was better than that of grayscale US among radiologists. Conclusion: The combination of grayscale US and CEUS might improve the diagnostic accuracy in differentiating benign and malignant pediatric ovarian masses. Objectives: To develop and validate imaging-based models for predicting the malignancy risk of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 241 IPMN patients who underwent preoperative CT and MRI for model development. Cyst size, presence and size of the enhancing mural nodule (EMN), main pancreatic duct (MPD) diameter, thickened/enhancing cyst wall, abrupt MPD caliber change with distal atrophy, and lymphadenopathy were assessed. Multiple logistic regression models predicting malignancy risk were created using either continuous (Model C) or dichotomized variables (Model D) using these imaging features. Validation included internal (n = 55) and external (n = 43) datasets. Model performance was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and compared with that of the international guideline-based model (Model F). Results: Model C identified age, EMN size, MPD diameter, and lymphadenopathy as independent predictors on CT, and age and presence and size of EMN on MRI. Model D identified age ≥ 68, cyst size ≥ 31 mm, EMN ≥ 6 mm, MPD ≥ 7 mm, and lymphadenopathy as independent predictors on CT, and age ≥ 68, EMN ≥ 4.5 mm, and lymphadenopathy on MRI. Model C (AUC, 0.763–0.899) performed slightly better than Model D (AUC, 0.753–0.912) without statistical significance. No significant difference was observed between Models C and F (AUC, 0.729–0.952). Combining Model C with obstructive jaundice improved performance (AUC, 0.802–0.941) without statistical significance. Conclusion: Our imaging-based models effectively predicted the malignancy risk of IPMNs, comparable to international consensus guidelines. Clinical relevance statement: Imaging features are important for predicting the malignant potential of IPMNs. Our imaging-based model may help determine surgical candidacy for patients with IPMNs. This comprehensive review explores a wide range of imaging findings associated with the gallbladder (GB), from anatomic variants to rare diseases. Objectives: The significant health differences between sexes in Iran in terms of burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) point to the urgency of developing policies. We aim to explore sex disparities in NCDs. Methods: We used Global Burden of Disease 2019 study to compare estimates of incidence, prevalence, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years lived with disabilities (YLDs), years of life lost (YLLs), and deaths among sexes for NCDs, and their main subgroups; neoplasms, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), diabetes mellitus (DM) during 1990–2019. Results: In 2019, there were 62,476,274 (59517167.5, 65759931) incident NCDs in men and 78758640.6 (75222093.7, 82272935.8) in women. There were 7734064.3 (6744951.2, 8846192) DALYs in men and 7760484.2 (6496609, 9218299.9) in women. Fatal estimates (deaths and YLLs) of NCDs were higher for men, while non-fatal estimates (prevalence, YLDs) were higher for women. Men were superior in all burden indices of NCDs subgroups, except for all indices of DM and YLDs in CVDs. Compared to 1990–2010, the period 2010–2019 confirmed a marked stagnation in decline rates of burden indices, as well as an increase in incidence and prevalence which was more pronounced among men. Despite shrinking sex gaps in NCDs subgroups since 1990, sex gap in DM is widening in 2019. Conclusions: There is a notable sex disparity in NCDs prevalence in Iran, which has become increasingly evident in DM burden. It will be imperative to continue monitoring sexual differences in NCDs burden to determine if disease rates between sexes continue to diverge in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a commonly used investigation for salivary gland lesions. The modified MSRSGC was introduced to standardise the FNA reporting of major salivary gland lesions. A frozen section is also used intraoperatively for these lesions. In this retrospective study, we included all patients who were treated at our institute between January 2012 to December 2019. The FNA reports of all the patients were reclassified based on the modified MSRSGC, and the sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values were calculated. We also assessed the indication for utilising the frozen section and correlated it with the preoperative FNA and the final histopathology report. A total of 325 patients satisfied the eligibility criteria and were included in this study. The sensitivity and specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the modified MSRSGC were 64.18% and 91.94% and 92.27% and 63.11%, respectively. The frozen section (FS) was done in 131 patients, the commonest reason was for obtaining a primary diagnosis (n = 104,79.3%). When the FNA was type V and above the primary diagnosis was that of malignancy in the vast majority (p < 0.001, kappa 0.563). The values of the modified MSRSGC were comparable with available literature in all categories except categories I and II which were higher than what is reported in the literature. When the preoperative FNA was modified to MSRSGC V and above, the possibility of malignancy was high, and the use of FS for primary diagnosis may not add much value intraoperatively. Introduction: The human gut microbiota influence critical functions including the metabolism of nutrients, xenobiotics, and drugs. Gut microbial β-glucuronidases (GUS) enzymes facilitate the removal of glucuronic acid from various compounds, potentially affecting anti-cancer drug efficacy and reactivating carcinogens. This review aims to comprehensively analyze and summarize studies on the role of gut microbial GUS in cancer and its interaction with anti-cancer treatments. Its goal is to collate and present insights that are directly relevant to patient care and treatment strategies in oncology. Methods: This scoping review followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines and focused on primary research exploring the role of GUS within the gut microbiota related to cancer etiology and anti-cancer treatment. Comprehensive literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Results: GUS activity was only investigated in colorectal cancer (CRC), revealing increased fecal GUS activity, variations in the gut microbial composition, and GUS-contributing bacterial taxa in CRC patients versus controls. Irinotecan affects gastrointestinal (GI) health by increasing GUS expression and shifting gut microbial composition, particularly by enhancing the presence of GUS-producing bacteria, correlating with irinotecan-induced GI toxicities. GUS inhibitors (GUSi) can mitigate irinotecan's adverse effects, protecting the intestinal barrier and reducing diarrhea. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first review to comprehensively analyze and summarize studies on the critical role of gut microbial GUS in cancer and anti-cancer treatment, particularly irinotecan. It underscores the potential of GUSi to reduce side effects and enhance treatment efficacy, highlighting the urgent need for further research to integrate GUS targeting into future anti-cancer treatment strategies. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of exercise with or without dietary advice on muscle mass, muscle strength and physical functioning (including perceived physical functioning and physical performance) in old cancer survivors. Methods: A systematic literature search was undertaken in May 2022 by searching multiple databases. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compared exercise with or without dietary advice to control group among old cancer survivors were screened. Meta-analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of exercise with or without dietary advice on muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical functioning. Results: Data from 21 trials were included in this study, including 16 exercise trials and 5 exercise + dietary advice studies. Regarding exercise, evidence supported its significant benefits on muscle strength among old cancer survivors, while no effect was seen on physical functioning and muscle mass. Concerning exercise combined with dietary advice, meta-analysis showed overall benefits on physical functioning, while limited study examined muscle mass and strength. As for safety and feasibility of interventions, low recruitment rate, moderate compliance, and few adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Exercise combined with dietary advice is a more effective approach for old cancer survivors in improving physical functioning compared with exercise alone. Future study is needed to explore the effects of exercise combined with dietary advice on combating sarcopenia. As recruitment and compliance among old cancer survivors were challenging, strategies to stimulate their motivation and promote habitual healthy behaviour are warranted. A series of new benzylideneiminophenylthiazole analogues were designed and synthesized. Common spectroscopic methods, such as FT-IR, 1H-, 13C-NMR, and MASS spectra, and elemental analysis, were used to confirm the molecular structures. Then, the antioxidant, cytotoxicity, and anti-bacterial effects of synthesized analogues were assessed against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), three cancer cell lines, and two bacterial strains, respectively. Among the analogues, 7f was detected as the most potent compound for antioxidant activity. Moreover, the compounds 7b, 7f, and 7 g exhibited the maximum cytotoxicity activity against MCF-7, HepG-2, and A549 cell lines, respectively. Finally, 7e showed the highest anti-bacterial activity against both S. aureus and E. coli strains. It was concluded from the antioxidant, cytotoxicity, and anti-bacterial effects that the benzylideneiminophenylthiazoles might serve as candidate molecules for the development of small molecules with medicinal potential. Recent theoretical advances in the One Health approach have suggested that cancer pathologies should be given greater consideration, as cancers often render their hosts more vulnerable to infectious agents, which could turn them into super spreaders within ecosystems. Although biologically plausible, this hypothesis has not yet been validated experimentally. Using a community of cnidarians of the Hydra genus (Hydra oligactis, Hydra viridissima, Hydra vulgaris) and a commensal ciliate species (Kerona pediculus) that colonizes them, we tested whether tumoral polyps of H. oligactis, compared to healthy ones, played an amplifying role in the number of ciliates, potentially resulting in a higher likelihood of infection for other community members through spillovers. Our results indicate that K. pediculus has a higher proliferation rate on tumoral polyps of H. oligactis than on healthy ones, which results in the infestation of other hydras. However, the magnitude of the spillover differed between recipient species. This study provides to our knowledge the first elements of proof of concept that tumoral individuals in communities could act as super spreaders of symbionts within and between species, and thus affect biotic interactions and dynamics in ecosystems. Approximately 5–15% of all dermatologic malignancies manifest in the upper and lower eyelids. The primary types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and sebaceous cell carcinoma, with Merkel cell carcinoma and melanoma following closely behind. Basal cell carcinoma predominantly affects the lower eyelid, yet various other carcinomas, melanomas, metastases, and neoplasms of diverse origins can arise on both upper and lower eyelids. Risk factors such as advanced age, smoking, and notably, exposure to UV light significantly contribute to the development of these eyelid lesions. Despite the increasing incidence, research on dermatologic eyelid malignancies remains limited. However, such study is imperative given that many systemic oncologic malignancies initially present as metastatic eyelid lesions. This paper provides an in-depth exploration of eyelid anatomy, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment management. Key Points: Eyelid metastases represent less than one percent of all eyelid cancers, yet they often serve as the initial indication of an underlying systemic malignancy. Early detection and treatment is crucial in improving prognosis and quality of life for patients. Purpose: This umbrella review aimed to identify, critically appraise, and synthesize current evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the applications of virtual reality-based supportive care interventions in cancer. Methods: Three bibliographic databases were searched from inception to February 1, 2024. Two independent reviewers screened the titles and abstracts of 421 records and retrieved 26 full-text systematic reviews. Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR-2) was used for quality assessment. Qualitative syntheses were performed to investigate the effects of virtual reality-based supportive care interventions on quality of life and physical, psychological, cognitive, and functional outcomes. Meta-analysis was performed based on data from the distinct primary studies that were extracted from the included reviews. Results: This umbrella review included 20 systematic reviews that were published between 2018 and 2023; nine of them conducted meta-analyses. A total of 86 distinct primary studies were identified. According to the AMSTAR-2 assessment, two reviews were evaluated as moderate quality, nine as low, and nine as critically low. Meta-analyses of primary studies revealed significant effects of virtual reality on anxiety (p < 0.001), depression (p < 0.001), and pain (p < 0.001), but not fatigue (p = 0.263). Qualitative syntheses revealed positive effects of virtual reality on physical function, cognitive function, and quality of life. Limited evidence was reported regarding outcomes of balance, gait, mobility, and activities of daily living. Conclusion: Virtual reality has proven to be a safe and feasible approach to deliver supportive care in cancer. Virtual reality can be implemented in various stages and settings of the cancer care continuum to support patients undergoing painful procedures, during or after chemotherapy, and after surgical interventions. Purpose: To perform a comparative analysis of surgically resected mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) of pancreas and branch-duct type intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (BD-IPMN) considering clinico-radiological high-risk predictors for malignant tumors using the current management guidelines. Materials and methods: 224 patients who underwent surgical resection and had histopathologically confirmed MCNs (benign 73; malignant 17) or BD-IPMNs (benign 110; malignant 24) and had pre-operative CT or MRI were retrospectively reviewed. Tumors classified as either high-grade dysplasia or invasive carcinoma were considered malignant, whereas those with low-grade dysplasia were considered benign. Imaging features were analyzed by two radiologists based on selected high-risk stigmata or worrisome features proposed by prevalent guidelines except tumors with main pancreatic duct dilatation (> 5 mm) were excluded. Results: MCNs and BD-IPMNs showed significant differences in aspects like tumor size, location, the presence and size of enhancing mural nodules, the presence of wall or septal thickening, and multiplicity. Multivariate analyses revealed tumor size (OR, 1.336; 95% CI, 1.124–1.660, p = 0.002) and the presence of enhancing mural nodules (OR, 67.383; 95% CI, 4.490-1011.299, p = 0.002) as significant predictors of malignant MCNs. The optimal tumor size differentiating benign from malignant tumor was 8.95 cm, with a 70.6% sensitivity, 89% specificity, PPV of 27.6%, and NPV of 96.9%, demonstrating superior specificity than the guideline-suggested threshold of 4.0 cm. For malignant BD-IPMNs, the presence of enhancing mural nodules (OR, 15.804; 95% CI, 4.439–56.274, p < 0.001) and CA 19 − 9 elevation (OR, 19.089; 95%CI, 2.868-127.068, p = 0.002) as malignant predictors, with a size of enhancing mural nodule threshold of 5.5 mm providing the best malignancy differentiation. Conclusion: While current guidelines may be appropriate for managing BD-IPMNs, our results showed a notably larger optimal threshold size for malignant MCNs than that suggested by current guidelines. Purpose: To determine whether strength training or tai ji quan can reduce frailty in older, postmenopausal women treated with chemotherapy for cancer. Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis from a 3-arm, single-blind, randomized controlled trial where older (50–75 years), postmenopausal women cancer survivors were randomized to supervised group exercise programs: tai ji quan, strength training, or stretching control for 6 months. We assessed frailty using a 4-criteria model consisting of weakness, fatigue, inactivity, and slowness. Using logistic regression, we determined whether the frailty phenotype (pre-frailty or frailty) decreased post-intervention, how many and which frailty criteria decreased, and what characteristics identified women most likely to reduce frailty. Results: Data from 386 women who completed baseline and 6-month testing were used (mean age of 62.0 ± 6.4 years). The odds of reducing overall frailty over 6 months were significantly higher in the strength training group compared to controls (OR [95%CI] 1.86 [1.09, 3.17]) but not for tai ji quan (1.44 [0.84, 2.50]). Both strength training (OR 1.99 [1.10, 3.65]) and tai ji quan (OR 2.10 [1.16, 3.84]) led to significantly higher odds of reducing ≥ 1 frailty criterion compared to controls. Strength training led to a three-fold reduction in inactivity (p < 0.01) and tai ji quan to a two-fold reduction in fatigue (p = 0.08) versus control. Higher baseline BMI, comorbidity score, and frailty status characterized women were more likely to reduce frailty than other women. Conclusions: Strength training appears superior to tai ji quan and stretching with respect to reducing overall frailty phenotype among postmenopausal women treated with chemotherapy for cancer, but tai ji quan favorably reduced the number of frailty criteria. Purpose: Determining whether patients’ unrealistic expectations of chemotherapy as a cure were associated with their perception of the disclosure of incurability. Methods: This prospective study included consecutive patients with pretreated non-small cell lung cancer from four study sites. Patients and their oncologists were asked whether they perceived the disclosure of cancer incurability. Patients were also asked if they thought that chemotherapy was curative. We followed up on whether the deceased patients received specialized palliative care 14 months after their last enrollment. Multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between the expectation of chemotherapy as a cure and patient/oncologist-reported perceptions of the disclosure of incurability. Results: We analyzed 200 patients, 77 (38.5%) of whom had unrealistic expectations of a cure. Based on patients’ perceptions, incurability was disclosed to 138 (69.0%) patients, and based on their oncologists’ perceptions, incurability was disclosed to 185 (92.5%) patients (patient/oncologist agreements, κ = 0.19). Patients without a perception of the oncologist’s disclosure of incurability—regardless of their oncologist’s perception—were more likely to have unrealistic expectations of a cure than patients for whom both patient and oncologist perceptions were present. Patients who had unrealistic expectations of chemotherapy as a cure were shown to be significantly less likely to have received specialized palliative care, after adjusting for covariates (adjusted OR, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.23–0.91; p =.027). Conclusion: Oncologists’ disclosure of incurability was not fully recognized by patients, and expectations of chemotherapy as a cure were associated with patients’ perception of the disclosure of incurability. The effectiveness of psychological interventions (PI) for malignant diseases is controversial. We aimed to investigate the effect of PI on survival and quality of life (QoL) in patients with cancer. We performed a systematic search of MEDLINE, Cochrane, and Embase databases to identify randomized controlled trials comparing PI to standard care (PROSPERO registration number CRD42021282327). Outcomes were overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and different domains of QoL. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the provider-, type-, environment-, duration of intervention; cancer stage, and type. Pooled hazard ratios (HR) and standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. The OS and RFS did not differ significantly between the two groups (OS:HR = 0.97; CI 0.87–1.08; RFS:HR = 0.99; CI 0.84–1.16). However, there was significant improvement in the intervention group in all the analyzed domains of QoL; in the global (SMD = 0.65; CI 0.35–0.94), emotional (SMD = 0.64; CI 0.33–0.95), social (SMD = 0.32; CI 0.13–0.51) and physical (SMD = 0.33; CI 0.05–0.60) domains. The effect of PI on QoL was generally positive immediately, 12 and 24 weeks after intervention, but the effect decreased over time and was no longer found significant at 48 weeks. The results were better in the breast cancer group and early stages of cancer. PIs do not prolong survival, but they significantly improve the QoL of cancer patients. Introduction: Biological drugs (BD) and Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi) have revolutionized the treatment of diverse dermatoses. However, there are concerns regarding their safety, especially the risk of cancer and opportunistic infections. Here, we discuss the risk of cancer associated with the BD and JAKi used in dermatology. Methods: A narrative review was carried out. All relevant articles evaluating the risk of cancer associated with BD or JAKi and published between January 2010 and February 2024 were selected. Results: Multiple large studies have evaluated the association between BD, JAKi and cancer risk. However, there is a lack of prospective, comparative studies. Overall, patients undergoing BD and JAKi present a cutaneous cancer incidence similar to that in the general population. The drugs more strongly associated with non-skin cancer risk were anti-tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNFs) agents and JAKi (especially tofacitinib and oral ruxolitinib). This risk appears to increase with age, the presence of other factors (such as chronic immunosuppression from previous drugs or other comorbidities), and specific diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and myelodysplastic syndrome. Conversely, BD such as interleukin (IL)-17 and IL-23 inhibitors may even reduce the risk of some visceral and hematological malignancies. In patients with dermatological conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, the risk of malignancies may be lower than in other subgroups, and probably comparable to the general population. Conclusions: The incidence of cancer in patients undergoing BD or JAKi is generally low. Purpose: The association between insomnia disorder and cancer-related mortality risk remains controversial. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the correlation between insomnia disorder and cancer-related mortality. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with musculoskeletal disease (MSD) between 2010 and 2015 were included in this study as a secondary analysis of a patient cohort with MSD in South Korea. Cancer mortality was evaluated between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2020, using multivariable Cox regression modeling. Patients with and without insomnia disorder constituted the ID and non-ID groups, respectively. Results: The final analysis incorporated a total of 1,298,314 patients diagnosed with MSDs, of whom 11,714 (0.9%) died due to cancer. In the multivariable Cox regression model, the risk of total cancer-related mortality was 14% (hazard ratio [HR], 1.14; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10–1.19; P < 0.001) higher in the ID group than in the non-ID group. Moreover, the ID group had a higher risk of mortality due to esophageal (HR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.08–1.96; P = 0.015), colorectal (HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.05–1.36; P = 0.007), head and neck (HR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.01–1.94; P = 0.049), lung (HR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.08–1.27; P < 0.001), and female genital organ (HR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.77; P = 0.008) cancers; leukemia; and lymphoma (HR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.12–1.49; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Insomnia disorder was associated with elevated overall cancer mortality in patients with MSDs, which was more evident for cancer mortality due to esophageal, colorectal, head and neck, lung, and female genital organ cancers; leukemia; and lymphoma. Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors are rare, usually benign neoplasms that occur in the soft tissue or bone and are the cause of nearly all cases of tumor-induced osteomalacia. Tumor-induced osteomalacia due to phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor is a challenging diagnosis to make—patients present with variable clinical and radiologic findings and the culprit neoplasm is often small and can occur anywhere head to toe. We present two cases of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor in the scapular body and plantar foot. In both cases, the patient endured years of debilitating symptoms before a tissue diagnosis was eventually reached. Descriptions of clinical presentation, laboratory workup, surgical resection, and imaging characteristics, with a focus on CT, MRI, and functional imaging, are provided to assist with the diagnosis and management of this rare entity. Endocrine therapy (ET) for breast cancer treatment is associated with cognitive complaints, but their etiology is poorly understood. To address this, we developed and implemented an ambulatory assessment protocol consisting of wearable activity monitors, brief surveys of affect, context, and perceived impairments, and ultra-brief performance-based measures of cognition. Newly diagnosed, ER/PR+, stage 0-III, female breast cancer patients, were recruited. Ambulatory assessments were conducted on smart phones and wearable activity monitors were used to monitor sleep and physical activity. Participants were asked to complete five 7-day measurement bursts (one before starting ET and one each month for 4 consecutive months while on ET). We observed a consent rate of 36%, 27 women completed the study. Of the women that withdrew, 91% dropped prior to the midpoint of follow up. There were no significant differences in demographics, clinical breast cancer characteristics, sleep or physical activity patterns, or measures of cognition between women who completed versus withdrew. Women who did not complete the study provided fewer valid days of baseline data. In conclusion, while some women may be overwhelmed with their cancer diagnosis, we did not identify any predictive characteristics of women whom did not complete the study. This novel method enables the prospective study of psychological changes associated with cancer treatment, capturing a wide array of information about behavior, experience, and cognition, thus providing a picture of the lived experiences of cancer patients before and during exposure to ET. This study aimed to describe the perception of the meaning of life and coping strategies of 19 patients with cancer at a public hospital in Brazil. This is descriptive and qualitative research that used Amedeo Giorgi's phenomenological model, and the interpretation was performed in light of Viktor Frankl's theory. Two themes have emerged: (1) the perception of the meaning of life in the experience with cancer and (2) religious coping to fight the disease. This study showed that revealing the meaning of life in the cancer experience contributes to better treatment compliance, a more favorable view of the future and better quality of life. Introduction: Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in the world which imposes numerous psychological burdens on the patients. Psycho-spiritual interventions such as meaning-based therapies may help decrease these challenges. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to investigate the effects of meaning-based psychotherapy on post-traumatic growth and death anxiety of patients with cancer. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Proquest, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched until 30 September 2023. The Cochrane Collaboration’s tool was used to assess the quality of the included studies. A random-effect model was preferred, and statistical analysis was performed by STATA software version 17. Results: A total of 17 studies were included in the systematic review. Eleven articles examined the impact of meaning-based interventions on death anxiety and six articles examined post-traumatic growth in cancer patients. Ten studies with a total of 555 participants were included for analysis of the effect of logotherapy versus routine care on death anxiety. Analysis showed a significant decrease effect of logotherapy versus routine care on death anxiety (SMD, − 4.05 (− 6.20, − 1.90); I2, 98.38%). Three studies with a total of 364 participants were included for analysis of the effect of logotherapy versus routine care on post-traumatic growth in patients with cancer. Analysis showed a positive but non-significant effect of logotherapy versus routine care on post-traumatic growth (SMD, 2.05 (− 0.91, 5.01); I2, 99.08%). Conclusion: The qualitative analysis showed the positive impact of meaning-based psychotherapy interventions on death anxiety and post-traumatic growth in cancer patients, but the results of the meta-analysis on post-traumatic growth were not statistically significant. Purpose: Physical activity can provide analgesic benefit but its effect on cancer-related pain is unclear. This review synthesised and appraised the evidence for the effect of physical activity on pain in people living with or beyond cancer. Methods: A systematic search of Ovid Medline and Embase was performed to identify randomised controlled trials (RCTs), randomised cross-over studies (RXTs), and prospective observational studies that examined physical activity and pain outcomes in adults living with or beyond cancer. Meta-analyses were performed to generate effect estimates. Risk of bias was assessed, and the GRADE system was used to assess evidence quality. Results: One hundred twenty-one studies (n = 13,806), including 102 RCTs, 6 RXTs, and 13 observational studies, met the criteria for inclusion. Meta-analyses of RCTs identified a decrease in pain intensity (n = 3734; standardised mean difference (SMD) − 0.30; 95% confidence interval (CI) − 0.45, − 0.15) and bodily pain (n = 1170; SMD 0.28; 95% CI 0.01, 0.56) but not pain interference (n = 207; SMD − 0.13, 95% CI − 0.42, 0.15) following physical activity interventions. Individual studies also identified a reduction in pain sensitivity but not analgesic use, although meta-analysis was not possible for these outcomes. High heterogeneity between studies, low certainty in some effect estimates, and possible publication bias meant that evidence quality was graded as very low to low. Conclusion: Physical activity may decrease pain in people living with and beyond cancer; however, high heterogeneity limits the ability to generalise this finding to all people with cancer or to specific types of cancer-related pain. Purpose: Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinoma (PDNEC) of the rectum and anus is a rare disease exhibiting aggressive biological behaviour, even if diagnosed early. Currently, there are no agreed standard treatment approaches and management of locally advanced (LA) and metastatic PDNEC usually follows treatments used in pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinomas because of the similarities with small cell lung cancer. The role of surgery in PDNEC is still debated and the benefit of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is unknown. This report summarises the experiences of CRT application in anorectal PDNEC in a single Danish institution. Methods: All patients with PDNEC treated with concomitant CRT between May 2019 and January 2021 at a University hospital in Denmark were evaluated. Demographics, treatment and survival outcomes were collected and analysed. Results: Six patients were identified. Five patients received radiotherapy with 50.4 Gy/28 fractions, and four were eligible for curative resection after the CRT. Distant metastasis was observed in four patients at diagnosis. Two patients with synchronous liver metastases were treated with RFA, and one received a liver resection. The treatment was well tolerated with limited side effects. The median follow-up time was 17 months (range 10–36 months), and the median duration of response was 11.2 months (range 8.1 to 24.2 months). One patient achieved a complete response. Conclusion: A multimodal treatment approach with CRT in advanced stages of PDNEC in a highly selected patient group is well tolerated and with a high chance of achieving local control and, combined with surgery, even complete response in a single case. Myoepitheliomas are uncommon neoplasms of major and minor salivary glands. These tumours are encapsulated and slow growing in nature and are benign in majority of the cases. The mean age of presentation is 40 years and this entity is rarely reported in younger age groups. Here, we seek to report a rare case of a 10-year-old patient who presented with a swelling below the right ear. Clinical and radiological evaluation revealed a mass in the parotid gland. Purpose: We determined whether racial/ethnic differences in patient experiences with care influence timeliness and type of initial surgical breast cancer treatment for a sample of female Medicare cancer patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the linked Epidemiology and End Results-Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (SEER-CAHPS) dataset. The outcomes were: (1) time-to-initial surgical treatment, and (2) type of treatment [breast conserving surgery (BCS) vs. mastectomy]. The indicators were reports of four types of patient experiences with care including doctor communication, getting care quickly, getting needed care, and getting needed Rx. Interaction terms in each multivariable logistic model examined if the associations varied by race/ethnicity. Results: Of the 2069 patients, 84.6% were White, 7.6% Black and 7.8% Hispanic. After adjusting for potential confounders, non-Hispanic Black patients who provided excellent reports of their ability to get needed prescriptions had lower odds of receiving surgery within 2-months of diagnosis, compared to NH-Whites who provided less than excellent reports (aOR: 0.29, 95% CI 0.09–0.98). There were no differences based on 1-month or 3-month thresholds. We found no other statistically significant effect of race/ethnicity. As to type of surgery, among NH Blacks, excellent reports of getting care quickly were associated with higher odds of receiving BCS versus mastectomy (aOR: 2.82, 95% CI 1.16–6.85) compared to NH Whites with less than excellent reports. We found no other statistically significant differences by race/ethnicity. Conclusion: Experiences with care are measurable and modifiable factors that can be used to assess and improve aspects of patient-centered care. Improvements in patient care experiences of older adults with cancer, particularly among minorities, may help to eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in timeliness and type of surgical treatment. Mammary gland tumours (MGTs) are commonly occurring neoplasms in female dogs. However, rare cases of MGTs in male dogs have been reported for years. Due to the low incidence of MGTs in male dogs in comparison to female dogs, veterinary oncology is mainly focused on mammary neoplasms diagnosed in female dogs and extensive research is conducted in this scientific area. Therefore, there are no sufficient epidemiological data on male dogs and the aetiology of their tumour development is still poorly understood. The aim of this literature review was to present cases of MGTs in male dogs for better understanding the scale of the problem over the years. The analyses of 74 affected male dogs with 92 tumours showed that the majority of MGTs in male dogs were benign tumours (54.3%), especially in form of adenomas, often developed in posterior canine mammary glands (58.1%). The increased number of canine MGTs in male dogs aged 7 -13 years with an age peak at 11 years was noted. The age of affected animals was not related to breed. Mammary gland neoplasms were diagnosed predominately in Crossbreeds (20.2%) followed by Cocker Spaniels (18.9%) and German Shepherds (10.8%). The association between MGT development in male dogs and co-occurrence of testicular tumours (TTs) has been discussed for years. Thus, cases of development of both tumours were included in this study. As a result, only in 12.7% cases of MGTs also history of TTs was described. Gynecologic (GYN) malignancies are gaining new and much-needed attention, perpetually fueling literature. Intra-/inter-tumor heterogeneity and “frightened” global distribution by race, ethnicity, and human development index, are pivotal clues to such ubiquitous interest. To advance “precision medicine” and downplay the heavy burden, data mining (DM) is timely in clinical GYN oncology. No consolidated work has been conducted to examine the depth and breadth of DM applicability as an adjunct to GYN oncology, emphasizing machine learning (ML)-based schemes. This systematic literature review (SLR) synthesizes evidence to fill knowledge gaps, flaws, and limitations. We report this SLR in compliance with Kitchenham and Charters’ guidelines. Defined research questions and PICO crafted a search string across five libraries: PubMed, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar—over the past decade. Of the 3499 potential records, 181 primary studies were eligible for in-depth analysis. A spike (60.53%) corollary to cervical neoplasms is denoted onward 2019, predominantly featuring empirical solution proposals drawn from cohorts. Medical records led (23.77%, 53 art.). DM-ML in use is primarily built on neural networks (127 art.), appoint classification (73.19%, 172 art.) and diagnoses (42%, 111 art.), all devoted to assessment. Summarized evidence is sufficient to guide and support the clinical utility of DM schemes in GYN oncology. Gaps persist, inculpating the interoperability of single-institute scrutiny. Background: Glomus tumors are benign mesenchymal tumors of the neuromyoarterial glomus bodies. They are generally localized at the subungual area of the fingers. Extradigital or non-subungual glomus tumors are less common. Their diagnosis can be challenging because of their lower incidence, nonspecific symptoms, and the fact that they can be missed during the physical examination. The aim of this case series is to provide an overview of non-subungual glomus tumors, including the patients' epidemiology characteristics, tumor localization and size, their varied imaging manifestations in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, differential diagnosis and histopathological features. Our report included 64 patients with the diagnosis of non-subungual glomus tumor in the Pathology Department at the La Paz University Hospital in Madrid from January 1966 to September 2022. There were 44 men and 20 women (mean age, 55.8 years; range, 8–85 years). The tumors had a mean size of 1 cm and were located in the lower limbs in most cases (59.3%). In 17 cases (27%) a diagnostic imaging test was performed (US, MRI or both). The radiological appearance of a glomus tumor on ultrasound was in most cases a circumscribed hypoechoic oval nodule located in the subcutaneous layer. Spectral Doppler can demonstrate both venous and arterial intralesional flow and in some cases a "Vascular stalk sign,'' seen in 4/9 cases. MRI assists in providing a more detailed characterization of these lesions, which present as T2-weighted hyperintense nodules with avid enhancement. Short conclusion: Glomus tumors are considered rare neoplasms, accounting for a small percentage of all tumors. Our report brings together the most up-to-date information available regarding the imaging findings and differential diagnosis of this entity. Although ultrasound images are not specific, they are crucial for early diagnosis, provide precise location information, and serve as a guide for tumor excision. Recently, positron emission tomography (PET) with fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) has gained significant attention as an advanced tumor diagnostic imaging tool. FAPI PET has a promising potential owing to its ability to accurately depict most malignant tumors. It has an accuracy that is comparable to or surpassing the diagnostic accuracy of PET using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Moreover, FAPI PET can identify malignant lesions that may be inconclusive on FDG PET. Beyond its application in neoplastic disorders, there have been encouraging reports suggesting the utility of FAPI PET in non-neoplastic conditions such as respiratory or cardiac diseases. This article aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the recently published articles investigating FAPI and discuss its clinical utility with an emphasis on its application in tumor diagnostics. Numerous radiopharmaceutical FAPIs, including 18F- and 68Ga-labeled compounds, have been developed, and they offer various advantages and applications. With the progress in the FAPI PET synthesis to enhance accumulation and retention in pathological lesions, future studies are expected to provide valuable data on its therapeutic efficacy. Background: Cancer patients often use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), however, standardized assessment in clinical routine is missing. The aim of this study was to evaluate a screening questionnaire on CAM usage that was published in the S3 Guideline Complementary Medicine in the Treatment of Oncological Patients. Methods: We developed a survey questionnaire to assess the practicability of the guideline questionnaire and communication on CAM between health care providers (HCPs) and patients. We collected 258 guideline questionnaires and 116 survey questionnaires from ten clinics and held twelve semi-structured interviews with HCPs. Results: 85% used at least one of the listed CAM methods, 54 participants (N = 77) never disclosed usage to a physician. The most frequently used CAM methods were physical activity (76.4%) and vitamin D (46.4%). 25.2% used at least one method, that was labeled risky by the guideline. 53.4% did not know of CAM's risk of interactions and side effects. Introducing the guideline questionnaire in routine cancer care increased the rate of patients talking to an HCP regarding CAM significantly from 35.5 to 87.3%. The HCPs stated positive effects as an initiation of conversation, increased safety within CAM usage and patients feeling thankful and taken seriously. However, due to the limited amount of time available for discussions on CAM, generalized distribution to all patients was not feasible. Conclusion: Institutions should focus on implementing standard procedures and resources that help HCPs discuss CAM on a regular basis. Purpose: To systematically evaluate the prevalence of alexithymia in cancer patients and to compare the prevalence of alexithymia in different countries, genders, and cancer types. Methods: We thoroughly searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsychINFO, China Integrated Knowledge Resource Database, Wanfang Database, Weipu Database, and Chinese Biomedical Database for studies on the prevalence of alexithymia in cancer patients from the inception to April 2, 2023. Based on the Stata 15.0 software package, the prevalence of alexithymia in cancer patients was estimated using a random-effects model in this meta-analysis. Results: Eighteen studies with a total of 3,196 participants met the eligibility criteria for the meta-analysis. In 18 studies, 37.0% (95% CI: 28.0% − 46.0%) of cancer patients had alexithymia. 13 studies identified that the pooled mean score of alexithymia in cancer patients was 56.91 (95% CI: 54.44% to 59.37%). The prevalence of alexithymia was higher in cancer patients in developing countries (39.7%, 95% CI: 28.7% to 50.7%), males (40.0%, 95% CI: 24.0% to 55.9%), and colorectal cancer patients (47.3%, 95% CI: 21.3% to 93.3%). Conclusions: Our study found that the pooled prevalence of alexithymia in cancer patients was 37.0%, and higher in developing countries, males, and patients with colorectal cancer. Understanding the current status of alexithymia in cancer patients, timely identification and treatment by medical practitioners can improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Purpose: Physical activity can improve health in people living with and beyond breast cancer; however, how to best support physical activity participation in this population is unclear. This qualitative study sought to identify important physical activity program components for breast cancer. Methods: Women with previous breast cancer (n = 11) and allied health professionals (n = 7) participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews (n = 15) or focus groups (n = 1). Qualitative data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis methods. Results: Four main themes were generated including (1) the need for physical activity programs; (2) person-centered programs; (3) flexible physical activity programs; and (4) systems factors. These reflected the health and non-health benefits of physical activity, the need to facilitate agency, the diversity in individual characteristics, preferences, abilities, and commitments of people with lived experience of cancer, as well as the need for physical activity programs to be integrated within the broader health system. Conclusion: Strategies to support physical activity engagement for breast cancer should embrace the diversity of those who are diagnosed with cancer as well as the diversity in which physical activity can be achieved. Background: The second leading mortality cause in the world is cancer, making it a critical issue that impacts human health. As a result, scientists are looking for novel biomarkers for cancer detection. The oral microbiome, made up of approximately 700 species-level taxa, is a significant source for discovering novel biomarkers. In this review, we aimed to prepare a summary of research that has investigated the association between the oral microbiome and gastrointestinal cancers. Methods: We searched online scientific datasets including Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Eligibility criteria included human studies that reported abundances of the oral microbiome, or its diagnostic/prognostic performance in patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Results: Some phyla of the oral microbiome have a relationship with cancers. Some particular phyla of the oral microbiome that may be related to gastrointestinal cancers consist of Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, and Fusobacteria. Changes in the abundances of Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, Prevotella, and Veillonella are correlated with carcinogenesis, and may be used for distinguishing cancer patients from healthy subjects. Oral, colorectal, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers are the most important cancers related to the oral microbiome. Conclusion: The results of this study may help future research to select bacteria as an early diagnostic or prognostic biomarker of gastrointestinal cancer. Given the current state of our knowledge, additional research is required to comprehend the multiplex processes underlying the role of bacterial microbiota upon cancer progression and to characterize the complex microbiota-host interaction network. Purpose : Financial worry is an under-appreciated negative effect of cancer. The relationship of financial worry and health behaviors in cancer is poorly characterized and has important clinical implications. This study examined the association of financial worry with substance misuse, mood, and quality of life. Methods: People with cancer (n = 1473; 6 to 20 months after diagnosis) were recruited from a SEER cancer registry in the Pacific Northwest. Participants completed an online survey assessing financial worry; misuse of cannabis, alcohol, and prescription drugs; tobacco smoking status; quality of life (physical and mental dimensions); anxiety; and depression. Multivariable regressions tested the association of financial worry to each health indicator and outcome. Results: In adjusted analyses, financial worry was associated with being a current vs. never smoker (odds ratio (OR) = 1.91, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 3.60), and a positive screen for an anxiety (OR = 3.01, 95% CI: 1.93, 4.68) and depressive (OR = 3.08, 95% CI: 1.89, 5.00) disorder. Financial worry was not associated with cannabis, alcohol, or prescription drug misuse (all ps > 0.05), but was associated with a decrease in physical (β = − 2.97, 95% CI: − 4.15, − 1.79) and mental (β = − 5.27, 95% CI: − 6.59, − 3.96) quality of life. Conclusion: Financial worry among cancer survivors is associated with anxiety, depression, and worse quality of life. Of the evaluated substances, there was only an increased odds of current tobacco use with financial worry. Future longitudinal studies should inform the relationships between these factors. Purpose: To characterize delivery features and explore effectiveness of telehealth-based cancer rehabilitation interventions that address disability in adult cancer survivors. Methods: A systematic review of electronic databases (CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library: Database of Systematic Reviews, Embase, National Health Service's Health Technology Assessment, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) was conducted in December 2019 and updated in April 2021. Results: Searches identified 3,499 unique studies. Sixty-eight studies met inclusion criteria. There were 81 unique interventions across included studies. Interventions were primarily delivered post-treatment and lasted an average of 16.5 weeks (SD = 13.1). They were most frequently delivered using telephone calls (59%), administered delivered by nursing professionals (35%), and delivered in a one-on-one format (88%). Risk of bias of included studies was primarily moderate to high. Included studies captured 55 measures of disability. Only 54% of reported outcomes had data that allowed calculation of effect sizes ranging -3.58 to 15.66. Conclusions: The analyses suggest small effects of telehealth-based cancer interventions on disability, though the heterogeneity seen in the measurement of disability makes it hard to draw firm conclusions. Further research using more diverse samples, common measures of disability, and pragmatic study designs is needed to advance telehealth in cancer rehabilitation. Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare benign neoplasm that can be mistaken for malignancies due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians and aggressive clinical appearance. We herein contributed by reporting an additional case of MNTI characterized by an extensive extraoral protrusion in a 2-month-old infant. The lesion involved the anterior maxilla, cheek, and infraorbital region, resulting the displacement of the nose to the contralateral side, and measuring approximately 10 cm in size. Surgical resection of the lesion was performed. After a 6-month follow-up, the patient has shown no evidence of recurrence. The rapid growth and aggressive behavior of MNTI emphasize the importance of an early diagnosis and prompt intervention in order to achieve favorable outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Studies evaluating the rate and histology of appendiceal neoplasms between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis include a small number of patients. Therefore, we sought a meta-analysis and systematic review comparing the rates and types of appendiceal neoplasm between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis. Methods: We included articles published from the time of inception of the datasets to September 30, 2022. The electronic databases included English publications in Ovid MEDLINE In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Citations, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, and Scopus. Results: A total of 4962 patients with appendicitis enrolled in 4 comparative studies were included. The mean age was 43.55 years (16- 94), and half were male (51%). Based on intra-operative findings, 1394 (38%) had complicated appendicitis, and 3558 (62%) had uncomplicated appendicitis. The overall incidence rate of neoplasm was 1.98%. No significant difference was found in the incidence rate of appendiceal neoplasm between complicated (3.29%) and uncomplicated (1.49%) appendicitis (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.16- 1.23; p < 0.087; I2 = 54.9%). The most common appendiceal neoplasms were Neuroendocrine Tumors (NET) (49.21%), Nonmucinous Adenocarcinoma (24.24%), Mixed Adeno-Neuroendocrine Tumor (MANEC) (11.40%), Mucinous Adenocarcinoma (4.44%). There was a significant difference between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis in rates of adenocarcinoma (50% vs. 13%), NET (31% vs. 74%), MANEC (19% vs. 13%) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: While there was no significant difference in the overall neoplasm rate between complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis, the NET rate was significantly higher in uncomplicated appendicitis. In comparison, the Adenocarcinoma rate was considerably higher in Complicated appendicitis. The effect of ALDOA, an important regulator of tumor metabolism and immune cell function, on gastric cancer (GC) immune infiltration has not been elucidated. Hence, we explored the feasibility of using ALDOA combined with immune molecular markers as novel prognostic or therapeutic targets for GC patients. Bioinformatic analyses were initially performed in multiple databases to assess the prognostic prediction values of ALDOA expression in GC. Subsequently, both ALDOA expression and the clinicopathological characteristics of a total of 114 GC patients who underwent curative gastrectomy were collected to demonstrate the potential association between ALDOA expression and the biological behaviors of GC. Next, the expression of ALDOA and its effect on prognosis were determined at the mRNA and protein levels, respectively, using tissue microarrays and cellular experiments. Subsequently, several molecular mechanisms were revealed based on elaborate analyses, indicating that ALDOA expression was potentially involved in the progression of GC and could be considered a promising biomarker for evaluating the prognosis of GC. High ALDOA expression was frequently found in GC cells and GC tissues at the mRNA and protein levels. Based on survival analysis, the expression of ALDOA indicated comparatively poor overall survival (OS) in GC and was identified as an independent prognostic predictor of GC. Correlation analysis showed that ALDOA expression had a positive association with lymph node metastasis in GC patients. Additionally, microRNA-1179 was found to play a key role in inhibiting the expression of ALDOA in the metabolic pathways of GC cells, which might disrupt the expression of various immune molecules and be detrimental to the prognosis of GC. Endometriosis is a frequent pathology mostly affecting women of young age. When typical aspects are present, the diagnosis can easily be made at imaging, especially at MRI. Transformation of benign endometriosis to endometriosis-associated neoplasms is rare. The physiopathology is complex and remains controversial. Endometrioid carcinoma and clear cell carcinoma are the main histological subtypes. Our goal was to review the main imaging characteristics that should point to an ovarian or extra-ovarian endometriosis-related tumor, especially at MRI, as it may be relevant prior to surgical management. Background: Radiomics is the process of converting radiological images into high-dimensional data that may be used to create machine learning models capable of predicting clinical outcomes, such as disease progression, treatment response and survival. Pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors differ from adult CNS tumors in terms of their tissue morphology, molecular subtype and textural features. We set out to appraise the current impact of this technology in clinical pediatric neuro-oncology practice. Objectives: The aims of the study were to assess radiomics' current impact and potential utility in pediatric neuro-oncology practice; to evaluate the accuracy of radiomics-based machine learning models and compare this to the current standard which is stereotactic brain biopsy; and finally, to identify the current limitations of radiomics applications in pediatric neuro-oncology. Materials and methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards, a systematic review of the literature was carried out with protocol number CRD42022372485 in the prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO). We performed a systematic literature search via PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Studies involving CNS tumors, studies that utilized radiomics and studies involving pediatric patients (age<18 years) were included. Several parameters were collected including imaging modality, sample size, image segmentation technique, machine learning model used, tumor type, radiomics utility, model accuracy, radiomics quality score and reported limitations. Results: The study included a total of 17 articles that underwent full-text review, after excluding duplicates, conference abstracts and studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria. The most commonly used machine learning models were support vector machines (n=7) and random forests (n=6), with an area under the curve (AUC) range of 0.60–0.94. The included studies investigated several pediatric CNS tumors, with ependymoma and medulloblastoma being the most frequently studied. Radiomics was primarily used for lesion identification, molecular subtyping, survival prognostication and metastasis prediction in pediatric neuro-oncology. The low sample size of studies was a commonly reported limitation. Conclusion: The current state of radiomics in pediatric neuro-oncology is promising, in terms of distinguishing between tumor types; however, its utility in response assessment requires further evaluation which, given the relatively low number of pediatric tumors, calls for multicenter collaboration. Background: The usage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is widespread among cancer patients. While reasons for and aims of using CAM have been evaluated in many studies, less is known about whether patients' concepts of how and why cancer develops has an influence on the choice of the CAM method. Methods: We pooled the data from all studies of our working group containing questions on lay etiological concepts and CAM usage and reanalyzed them with respect to the associations between these parameters. Results: The pooled dataset from 12 studies included 4792 patients. A third (1645 patients) reported using CAM. Most often used were supplements (55.9%), relaxation techniques (43.6%), and homeopathy (37.9%). Regarding perceived causes, patients most often marked stress (35.4%) followed by genes (31.9%). While all lay etiological beliefs were highly significantly associated with usage of CAM in general, there was no association between single lay etiological concepts and types of CAM used. Yet, in a network analysis, we found two associations: one comprising trauma, mistletoe, genes, and nutritional supplements, the other yoga, vitamin C, nutritional supplements, and TCM herbs. In the correlation heatmap, one cluster comprises etiological concepts of personality, immune system and trauma, and two clusters of CAM methods emerged: one comprising praying, yoga, meditation, and relaxation procedures, the other nutritional supplements, selenium, vitamins A and C. Conclusion: While physicians are trained to derive treatment strategies from etiological concepts, lay people choosing CAM do not follow these rules, which may point to other needs of patients addressed by CAM. Purpose: We compared the perception of office-based haematologists and oncologists regarding the availability of outpatient psycho-social support services (PSSS) for patients with cancer and a migration background, as well as their different experiences with these services. Methods: Data were collected via an online survey addressing the doctors' socio-demographic characteristics and their perception of-and experience with PSSS. The association between socio-demographic characteristics of the doctors and their experiences with PSSS was tested using Pearson's chi-squared test and Kruskal–Wallis test. Results: A total of 55 doctors were included in this study. More than three doctors in four reported non-sufficient presence of PSSS in foreign languages in their region; one in two reported that the services for patients with migration background should be improved. Most doctors reported missing PSSS in Turkish and Arabic in their region. Doctors with less experience referred patients more often to PSSS hosted in patients' associations (75% vs 25%; p = 0.02), than doctors with more experience. Doctors working in larger cities referred patients less often to PSSS in cancer counselling centres (12% vs 88%; p = 0.01), than doctors working in small or middle-large cities. Male doctors were more satisfied with the network of PSSS' providers, than female doctors (mean score = 2.8 vs 2.2; p = 0.05). Conclusions: Our results suggest that efforts should be made for a higher regional availability of overall and specific PSSS for non-German speaking patients (especially for Turkish- and Arabic-speaking patients). Purpose: To evaluate the risk of sarcopenia on the length of hospital stay and deaths in preoperative cancer patients as well its relation to physical and functional capacity. Methods: Preoperative patients admitted to the Cancer Hospital of Mato Grosso comprised the sample. Sociodemographic data, lifestyle data, and a questionnaire for sarcopenia screening were collected. Subsequently, total body mass, height, muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance were evaluated. The primary, secondary and tertiary outcomes were sarcopenia, length of stay and death, respectively. The data were tabulated and analyzed using the statistical software SPSS (25.0). The significance level was 5%. Results: We observed 12 (7.4%) patients with low muscle strength, 20 (12.3%) patients with low muscle mass, 11 (6.8%) patients with low physical performance, and 18 (11.1%) patients with scores for possible sarcopenia. When the risk of sarcopenia was observed, 44 (27.2%) patients had at least one risk related to muscle disorder. When analyzing the prevalence and association of sarcopenia with sociodemographic variables, we observed that education level was associated with sarcopenia (p = 0.031). In addition, there was an association between preoperative sarcopenia and postoperative death (p = 0.006). Finally, there were important correlations between muscle strength and physical performance (p < 0.05), between muscle strength and the sarcopenia questionnaire (p < 0.001), and between physical performance and the sarcopenia questionnaire (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggest the need for counseling and the need to evaluate patients for risk of sarcopenia, since early intervention, such as dietary supplementation and physical exercise, may favor a better postoperative prognosis, possibly corresponding to shorter hospital stays and longer survival and quality of life for patients, especially those who will undergo surgical procedures. Purpose: Stress-induced adrenergic signaling can suppress the immune system. In animal models, pharmacological beta-blockade stimulates CD8 + T-cell activity and improves clinical activity of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) in inhibiting tumor growth. Herein, we investigated the effect of BB on clinical outcomes of patients receiving ICB in advanced solid tumors. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with solid tumors treated with ICB at our institution from January 1, 2011 to April 28, 2017. The primary clinical outcome was disease control. Secondary clinical outcomes were overall survival (OS), and duration of therapy (DoT). The primary predictor was use of BB. Association between disease control status and BB use was assessed in univariable and multivariable logistic regression. OS was calculated using hazard ratios of BB-recipient patients vs. BB non-recipient patients via Cox proportional hazards regression models. All tests were two-sided at a significance level of 0.05. Results: Of 339 identified patients receiving ICB, 109 (32%) also received BB. In covariate-adjusted analysis, odds of disease control were significantly higher among BB recipients compared to BB-non-recipients (2.79; [1.54–5.03]; P = 0.001). While we did not observe significant association of OS with the use of BB overall, significant association with better OS was observed for the urothelial carcinoma cohort (HR: 0.24; [0.09, 0.62]; P = 0.0031). Conclusions: Concurrent use of BB may enhance the clinical activity of ICB and influence overall survival, particularly in patients with urothelial carcinoma. Our findings warrant further investigation to understand the interaction of beta adrenergic signaling and antitumor immune activity and explore a combination strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: COVID-19 serologic response in patients with cancer may be lower than in the general population and may be influenced by the type of tumor or anticancer treatment. This study aims to analyze serological response prior and after vaccination of COVID-19 within the oncological population in Andorra. We set out to identify risk factors for a higher or lower serological response. Patients and methods: Observational, unicentric, prospective cohort study of oncologic patients in Andorra. We calculated the seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (May 2020–June 2021) and analyzed the main demographic, oncologic features and factors associated with being seropositive. Results: A total of 373 patients were analyzed, mainly with solid tumours (n = 334, 89.5%). At baseline, seroprevalence was 13%, increasing during follow-up to 19%; lower seroprevalence was observed in patients with hematologic malignancies (2.6% vs 14.2%; p = 0.041) and patients receiving biological therapies (0% vs 15%, p = 0.005). In the overall seroprevalence analysis, women (23% vs 11.9%; p = 0.006) and tumour-free patients (p = 0.034) showed higher seroprevalence. The multivariable analysis showed that odds of being seropositive were higher among women (OR: 2.44, 95% CI 1.28–4.64), and patients who underwent surgery (OR: 3.35, 95% CI 1.10–10.20). About 80% of the cohort received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccination, showing a higher seroprevalence of patients who received ChAdOx1-S than those who received BNT162b2 (24.4% vs 6.4%: p = 0.001). Conclusion: The seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-COV-2 in oncologic patients in Andorra was higher among females and patients who received hormonal therapy and surgery while patients with hematologic malignancies and biologic therapies showed lower seropositivity without finding differences in the type of tumour or anticancer treatment. Patients with cancer experience dynamic and longitudinal changes in nutritional status and body composition along the disease trajectory. They often want to know about their outlook with regard to treatment outcomes and overall survival. One of the commonly used measures for body composition is bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). BIA is an easy-to-use, quick, inexpensive, noninvasive, and reproducible technique that is often incorporated in daily clinical practice. Phase angle (PA), which is derived from BIA, is an indicator of cell membrane health and integrity. Higher PA values reflect better cell function, higher muscle mass, and lower fat mass. PA is also thought to be a proxy of water distribution (ratio between extracellular water [ECW] and intracellular water [ICW]) and body cell mass. In this narrative review, we discuss studies examining the diagnostic and prognostic value of PA regarding nutritional status, body composition and physical function, complications of cancer treatments, overall survival, symptoms, and quality of life (QOL) in patients with cancer. The literature suggests that PA is moderately to strongly correlated with body composition and physical function but only weakly correlated with nutritional status, complications, survival, symptoms, and QOL. Furthermore, the PA cutoff values vary significantly according to study and patient population with the diversity of bioelectrical impedance technology and electrode composition and placement. Thus, PA has yet to be routinely incorporated into clinical practice for patients with cancer. Background: Spindle cell tumours in the sinonasal area are diagnostically challenging. We identified a neoplasm that defied histopathological classification using current criteria. Methods: The case was subjected to histopathological, immunohistochemical and molecular analysis using a large small variant DNA panel. Results: The tumour comprised cytologically bland epithelioid spindle cells with a rich vasculature, which lack expression of actin and other smooth muscle markers, CD34 and beta-catenin. An activating insertion/deletion in exon 12 of the PDGFRA gene was detected. This alteration has previously been described in gastrointestinal stromal tumours and inflammatory fibroid polyps of the GI tract, but the site, histological, and immunophenotypic features in this tumour are distinct. Conclusion: We describe a novel sinonasal spindle cell tumour characterised by an activating insertion/deletion in exon 12 of PDGFRA. The diagnosis of PDGFRA-activated sinonasal spindle cell tumour should be considered in difficult to classify mesenchymal lesions at this site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
