The feeding upon large animals—even larger than the predator—by benthic cnidarians has been reported from many ecosystems but never exhaustively studied to date. By reviewing 38 papers on this topic, this review aims to recap the observations on the predatory behaviour of polyps, to establish feeding plasticity boundaries and to understand the contribute of this trophic strategy to the benthic–pelagic coupling. The reviewed documents published increasingly during the last two decades mostly reported observations on heterotrophic Anthozoa in shallow ecosystems collected through photo/video records. The main prey items are represented by gelatinous zooplankton and echinoderms. The lexical discordance in the considered papers highlights the need to standardize the terminology to describe the feeding behaviour of benthic Cnidaria, opportunistic and characterized by a strong plasticity. Given the importance of large prey in cnidarian trophism, we proposed an unambiguous terminology that will help the online search of literature and address future studies. We suggest identifying micro-predation (predator/prey size ratio ≥ 5:1) and macro-predation (predator/prey size ratio is ≤ 1:1) as distinct feeding modalities, because the capture of large prey involves peculiar movements of polyps, such as stretching and retracting of column and tentacles to pull the prey towards the mouth. Group living is widespread and beneficial to metazoans. It improves protection and survival opportunities, reinforcing interspecific competitiveness. Benthic cnidarians often colonize large surfaces. Evidence of collective capture and exploitation of large prey by small, clumped polyps suggests that aggregation is functional to access food resources hardly achievable by isolated individuals. In turn, the chance to catch large prey may represents a driver of aggregation in polyps, whether beneficial to their fitness. Here, the effects of group foraging on aggregation, asexual reproduction, and growth rates of Aurelia coerulea von Lendenfeld 1884 polyps were experimentally tested by providing them with either small or large prey, or a mix of both to simulate the co-occurrence of preys at sea. As expected, some polyps were not able to reach the large prey. Hence, the population was a posteriori divided into group-foragers and solitary-feeders. In general, the large prey diet resulted in higher population fitness and when simultaneously supplied with the small prey represented an energetic booster resulting beneficial for all group-members. The decrease of interindividual distances was reported among group-foragers, that converged towards each other. Cnidarians are basal in metazoan evolution, and the comprehension of their collective foraging behavior, as well as the processes leading to the selective feature driving them to forage in group or not, may be essential to better understand the evolution and spread of social foraging in animals. Moreover, the access to large prey by sessile polyps of Aurelia coerulea could be pivotal in determining the increase in abundance of adult bloom-forming medusae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Substrate and depth are known to be crucial factors in determining the spatial distribution of benthic communities. Herein, we explored if the nature of the substrate, living (i.e., macroalgae) and non-living (i.e., bare rock), may influence the hydroid assemblages of the Tuscany Archipelago (Italy), in relation to the bathymetric gradient. Samples were collected in June 2019 and 2020 in two islands, Montecristo and Giglio. Overall, 16 families (12 Leptothecata and 4 Anthoathecata) and 74 species were identified, with exclusive species observed for each substrate type and depth. The pattern of assemblages’ distribution indicates an interaction between two factors (substrate and depth) also depending on the considered island. The DISTLM-forward analysis revealed that the percentage coverage of several algal taxa significantly explained a part of the observed variation in the hydroid assemblages. This study improves the knowledge of the zoobenthic communities of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and points out the important role of the living substrate and its variation in the distribution patterns of the hydroids assemblages. In addition, following the Italian legislation and the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, this paper contributes to improve the knowledge of the biodiversity of the Tuscan Archipelago providing a baseline for the biodiversity management of the forthcoming marine protected area. A phyllodocid polychaete belonging to the genus Eulalia is reported from Nuevo Gulf, Patagonia (South-western Atlantic Ocean) with abundant populations thriving in the intertidal zone. Morphological and molecular data allowed assigning this population to Eulalia clavigera (Audouin & Milne-Edwards, 1834), a species typically occurring along the north-eastern Atlantic coast. The absence of genetic structuring between north-eastern and south-western Atlantic E. clavigera strongly supports a non-native origin of the Patagonian population. Conversely, the majority of the Mediterranean Eulalia cf. clavigera analysed in this study turned out to belong to a different, probably undescribed species, suggesting that the diversity and taxonomy of green Eulalia is more complex than previously supposed. The high adaptation capabilities to stressed environments showed by E. clavigera, along with its possible high impact on native assemblages through predation, compel to carefully monitor its spread along the Patagonian coasts. Spatio-temporal patterns of the distribution of crustaceans from shallow hard bottoms along the Alexandria coast (Egypt, Mediterranean Sea) were studied during a complete year cycle and also in relation to potential drivers of change (both biotic and abiotic), including variation in habitat-forming species. Overall, the crustacean assemblages appeared poor, including only 14 species belonging to Amphipoda (five species), Isopoda (five species), Tanaidacea (two species), Cirripedia and Decapoda (one species each). The distribution patterns of crustacean assemblages appeared significantly variable both in the spatial and in the temporal dimension on a rather unpredictable basis, albeit variation was related to changes in dominant algal and invertebrate habitat formers. High variability and low species richness observed suggest that the analyzed assemblages are selected by local unfavorable environmental conditions. In fact, the crustacean hard bottom fauna is composed by a bulk of tolerant forms, including the dominant Tanais dulongi, Apohyale perieri, Dynamene bidentata, Sphaeroma serratum, Elasmopus pectenicrus, and Jassa marmorata. Their spatio-temporal dynamics, as well as those of the remaining species, and correlations with the variation of habitat formers and environmental variables are reported. This is a baseline assessment of the crustacean diversity along the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, thus having paramount importance for understanding the predicted future changes of biodiversity for the area. Phylogeny of Syllidae is under debate due to new studies based on molecular and morphological data. The noticeable taxonomic diversity of syllids (about 700 listed species) is also mirrored in the array of reproductive strategies as well as in sperm morphology, counting a display of forms already supposed to reflect phylogenetic relationships between the species. The sperm ultrastructure of Syllis gerlachi, S. prolifera and S. vittata is herein presented and compared to the Syllinae species studied previously. Moreover, the egg structure and the gamete allocation within stolons of S. vittata are particularly investigated. Both male germinal cells at different level of maturation and oocytes were found in the same individual of S. vittata, suggesting simultaneous hermaphroditism. The ultrastructural analysis revealed that the observed spermatozoa belong to the ect-aquasperm type resembling those of the similar studied species ( Syllis sp., S. pigmentata and S. krohni). Differences in the acrosome structure and nucleus shape are in accordance with a recent phylogenetic reconstruction and suggest a trend in the evolution of spermatozoa in Syllinae toward the development of the apical part. However, further molecular and ultrastructural analyses are needed to support this hypothesis. This is the first record of simultaneous hermaphroditism within Syllinae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Shallow-water marine organisms are among the first to suffer from combined effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers. The orange coral Astroides calycularis is a shallow-water bioconstructor species endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. Although raising conservation interest, also given its special position within the Dendrophylliidae, information about the threats to its health is scant. We investigated the health status of A. calycularis at five locations in northwestern Sicily along a gradient of cumulative human impact and the most probable origin of the threats to this species, including anthropogenic land-based and sea-based threats. Cumulative human impact appeared inversely related to the performance of A. calycularis at population, colony, and polyp levels. Sea-based human impacts appeared among the most likely causes of the variation observed. The reduction in polyp length can limit the reproductive performance of A. calycularis, while the decrease of percent cover and colony area is expected to impair its peculiar feeding behaviour by limiting the exploitable dimensional range of prey and, ultimately, reef functioning. This endangered habitat-forming species appeared susceptible to anthropogenic pressures, suggesting the need to re-assess its vulnerability status. Creating microprotected areas with specific restrictions to sea-based human impacts could be the best practice preserve these bioconstructions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
