The mucoralean genus Backusella comprises saprobe species commonly isolated from soil and leaf litter but also from wood, invertebrates, and toads. Molecular species recognition of Backusella has been mainly based on the ITS and LSU regions. Because mucoralean fungi tend to have high intraspecific variability of ITS sequences, we established the gene encoding the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB1) as phylogenetic marker in Backusella. The topologies of the ITS/LSU and RPB1 trees were widely similar. The maximum growth temperature is shown to represent a valuable taxonomic feature because it varied strongly within the genus. Seven Backusella spp. are capable of growing at temperatures ≥ 36 °C, four of which were positioned in a same clade. Based on the evidence of molecular phylogenetic analyses as well as on morphological and physiological (maximum growth temperature) features, Backusella gigaspora sp. nov. and B. pernambucensis sp. nov. are described. Gongronella is a genus of fungi in Mucorales (Mucoromycota). Some of its members have important biotechnological applications, but until now, not a single mitogenome has been characterized in Gongronella. Here, we present the complete mitogenome assembly of Gongronella sp. w5, a soil isolate known to interact with plants and several fungi. Its 36,593-bp circular mitogenome encodes the large and small subunit rRNAs, 14 standard mitochondrial proteins, 24 tRNAs, three free-standing ORF proteins, and the RNA subunit of RNase P (rnpB). These genes arrange in an order novel to known fungal mitogenomes. Three group I introns are present in the cob, cox1, and nad5 genes, respectively, and they are probably acquired by horizontal gene transfer. Phylogenetic analysis based on mitochondrion-encoded proteins supports the grouping of Gongronella sp. w5 with Absidia glauca, forming the Cunninghamellaceae clade within Mucoromycota. Gongronella and most other Mucoromycota species are predicted to use the standard genetic code in mitochondrial translation, rather than code 4 assigned by GenBank. A comparison among seven publicly available mitogenomes in Mucoromycota reveals the presence of the same 14 typical protein-coding genes plus rnpB, yet substantial variation in mitogenome size, intron number, gene order, and orientation. In this comparison, the uniqueness of Gongronella is evident from similarly large differences to its closest phylogenetic neighbor, A. glauca. This study promotes our understanding of fungal evolution in Mucoromycota. This article is the 13th contribution in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein 125 taxa from four phyla, ten classes, 31 orders, 69 families, 92 genera and three genera incertae sedis are treated, demonstrating worldwide and geographic distribution. Fungal taxa described and illustrated in the present study include three new genera, 69 new species, one new combination, one reference specimen and 51 new records on new hosts and new geographical distributions. Three new genera, Cylindrotorula (Torulaceae), Scolecoleotia (Leotiales genus incertae sedis) and Xenovaginatispora (Lindomycetaceae) are introduced based on distinct phylogenetic lineages and unique morphologies. This is the twelfth contribution to the Fungal Diversity Notes series on fungal taxonomy, based on materials collected from many countries which were examined and described using the methods of morphology, anatomy, and strain culture, combined with DNA sequence analyses. 110 taxa are described and illustrated, including five new genera, 92 new species, eight new combinations and other taxonomic contributions (one new sequenced species, one new host and three new records) which are accommodated in 40 families and 1 incertae sedis in Dothideomycetes. An accurate understanding of the diversity and distribution of fungal symbioses in land plants is essential for mycorrhizal research. Here we update the seminal work of Wang and Qiu (Mycorrhiza 16:299-363, 2006) with a long-overdue focus on early-diverging land plant lineages, which were considerably under-represented in their survey, by examining the published literature to compile data on the status of fungal symbioses in liverworts, hornworts and lycophytes. Our survey combines data from 84 publications, including recent, post-2006, reports of Mucoromycotina associations in these lineages, to produce a list of at least 591 species with known fungal symbiosis status, 180 of which were included in Wang and Qiu (Mycorrhiza 16:299-363, 2006). Using this up-to-date compilation, we estimate that fewer than 30% of liverwort species engage in symbiosis with fungi belonging to all three mycorrhizal phyla, Mucoromycota, Basidiomycota and Ascomycota, with the last being the most widespread (17%). Fungal symbioses in hornworts (78%) and lycophytes (up to 100%) appear to be more common but involve only members of the two Mucoromycota subphyla Mucoromycotina and Glomeromycotina, with Glomeromycotina prevailing in both plant groups. Our fungal symbiosis occurrence estimates are considerably more conservative than those published previously, but they too may represent overestimates due to currently unavoidable assumptions. Microbial mats in the Lower Devonian Rhynie chert represent diverse communities of organisms, which probably not only co-occurred in these structures, but also variously interacted with one another. However, little is known about these interactions. Three different types of fungi interact with clusters of small propagules that frequently occur within the Rhynie microbial mats. One of the fungi occurs in the form of small mycelia and single reproductive units within individual propagules, while the second is characterized by apophysate, epibiotic sporangia and multibranched rhizoidal systems that extend through the clusters and penetrate individual propagules. The third fungus consists of what is interpreted as a distal sporangium or spore from which a long, tubular stalk reaches into the propagule cluster. One specimen of the latter fungus occurs inside a specimen of the second fungus and, moreover, shows evidence suggestive of hyperparasitism in the form of conical callosities. This discovery supports the suggestion that microbial mats in the Rhynie paleoecosystem were complex structures based on the presence of numerous interactions between different organisms within the mats. High-throughput sequencing studies generate vast amounts of taxonomic data. Evolutionary ecological hypotheses of the recovered taxa and Species Hypotheses are difficult to test due to problems with alignments and the lack of a phylogenetic backbone. We propose an updated phylum- and class-level fungal classification accounting for monophyly and divergence time so that the main taxonomic ranks are more informative. Based on phylogenies and divergence time estimates, we adopt phylum rank to Aphelidiomycota, Basidiobolomycota, Calcarisporiellomycota, Glomeromycota, Entomophthoromycota, Entorrhizomycota, Kickxellomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Mortierellomycota and Olpidiomycota. We accept nine subkingdoms to accommodate these 18 phyla. We consider the kingdom Nucleariae (phyla Nuclearida and Fonticulida) as a sister group to the Fungi. We also introduce a perl script and a newick-formatted classification backbone for assigning Species Hypotheses into a hierarchical taxonomic framework, using this or any other classification system.
