Due to the narrow genetic base of both Deli and AVROS populations used in Malaysian commercial planting materials, exotic germplasm from Nigeria has been introduced into existing breeding populations. This study was conducted to select the best families from 38 dura × pisifera (D × P) families for the development of new high-yielding planting materials. The families were planted at the MPOB Research Station Hulu Paka, Terengganu, Malaysia, in 2007, in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Bunch yield recording, bunch quality components estimations, and vegetative measurements were analysed using analysis of variance, followed by comparisons between family means, heritability estimates, and cluster analysis. Highly significant genetic variation was observed for all traits among the 38 D × P families. Families PK 4044, ECP HP 496, ECP HP 500, and ECP HP 502 exhibited excellent yield-related traits such as fresh fruit bunch (FFB) yield, bunch number (BNO), oil yield (OY), total economic product (TEP), and total oil content (TOT). Although the broad-sense heritability estimates were low for FFB yield (15.8%), moderate for TEP (53.8%) and TOT (55.2%), the estimates were high for BNO (80.9%) and OY (62.7%). The families clustered into three main clusters with several sub-clusters, whereby the high-yielding four families (PK 4044, ECP HP 496, ECP HP 500, and ECP HP 502) were clustered together. Using these families as commercial planting materials may potentially increase the national oil yield, which has stagnated for a few decades, and subsequently contribute to the advancement of the oil palm industry in the future. Hemoglobin (Hb) Vancleave (NM_000518.5:c.431 A > T; dbSNP: rs33918338) is an extremely rare structural hemoglobin variant worldwide, and studies are limited. This report describes the case of a 16-year-old male patient who presented with secondary erythrocytosis. The diagnosis of Hb Vancleave, in combination with codon 41/42 (-TTCT) (NM_000518.5:c.126_129del; dbSNP: rs80356821), was confirmed by direct sequencing. The presence of emerging contaminants (ECs) originating from pharmaceutical waste in water, wastewater, and marine ecosystems at various geographical locations has been clearly publicised. This review paper presents an overview of current monitoring data on the occurrences and distributions of ECs in coastal ecosystem, tap water, surface water, ground water, treated sewage effluents, and other sources. Technological advancements for EC removal are also presented, which include physical, chemical, biological, and hybrid treatments. Adsorption remains the most effective method to remove ECs from water bodies. Various types of adsorbents, such as activated carbons, biochars, nanoadsorbents (carbon nanotubes and graphene), ordered mesoporous carbons, molecular imprinting polymers, clays, zeolites, and metal–organic frameworks have been extensively used for removing ECs from water sources and wastewater. Activated carbon (AC) is becoming the limelight due to its widespread application as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment, gases, and catalysis. However, its high consumption and price have drawn more attention to the sustainable use of natural resources as precursor for AC production. This study focuses on synthesising AC from two types of oil palm trunk (OPT) fibres, a significant agricultural waste products produced by Malaysia's thriving palm oil industries. The BET surface area of about 2057.9 m2 g−1 was achieved by chemical activation with phosphoric acid (H3PO4). The efficiency of the synthesised AC was critically analysed based on the adsorption experiments with methylene blue (MB) by varying several parameters (dosage of adsorbent, pH, initial dye concentration, and temperature of the solution) to elucidate the adsorption mechanism(s). A maximum adsorption capacity of 320.4 mg g−1 at 50 °C was achieved, and the Temkin (r2 = 0.98, 0.95, 0.95) and Langmuir (r2 = 0.94, 0.93, 0.95) isotherm models fitted the adsorption process better than the Freundlich (r2 = 0.95, 0.90, 0.86) model. Besides, the pseudo-second-order model (r2 > 0.90) best described the adsorption process, favouring chemisorption over physisorption. Thermodynamics showed MB adsorption on AC was spontaneous except at the highest dye concentration. It was exothermic at lower dye concentrations (50 and 100 mg L−1) and endothermic at higher ones (300, 500, and 700 mg L−1). Microbial degradation is considered as an attractive method to eliminate exposure to mycotoxin that cause a serious threat in agriculture global industry and severe human health problems. Compared with other more prominent mycotoxin compounds, fusaric acid (FA) biodegradation has not been widely investigated. In this study, a fusaric acid-degrading bacterium Burkholderia sp. IMCC1007 was identified by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing and its detoxification characteristics were evaluated. This strain able to utilize FA as sole energy and carbon source with growth rate (µ) of 0.18 h− 1. Approximately 93% from the initial substrate FA concentration was almost degraded to the residual about 4.87 mg L− 1 after 12 h of incubation. The optimal degradation conditions for pH and temperature were recorded at 6.0 with 30 °C respectively. An efficient FA degradation of strain IMCC1007 suggested its potential significance to detoxification development. Accroding to LC-MS/Q-TOF analysis, FA was bio-transformed to 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (C7H6O3) and other possible metabolites. Plant treated with detoxified FA products exhibited reduction of wilting index, mitigating against FA phytoxicity effect on plant growth and photosynthesis activity. Phytotoxicity bioassay suggested that degradation product of IMCC1007 was not a potent harmful compound towards plants as compared to the parent compound, FA. The growth and productivity of a crop such as the oil palm are influenced by their complex interactions with the environment. However, the stochasticity of intricate biological systems such as plants is a challenge for accurate assessment of the interaction magnitude. In this study, oil palm clones produced from tissue culture process as a genetically uniform planting material were planted in two different environments of open field and biosafety screenhouse. The metabolome of various plant parts including spear leaf, mature leaf and root tissues was investigated using liquid and gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry detection and chemometrics data analysis for reliable metabolite characterization. The oil palm metabolome information was correlated with morphological information and the environmental parameters of temperature, humidity, amount of light and precipitation from the two sites to discern the relationship and effect of the environmental factors on the crop. Although derived from a similar origin, the oil palm morphology and metabolome were impacted by their planting environment especially the amount of light. Several biosynthetic and metabolism pathways were affected by the different environment, marked by the abundance of primary and secondary metabolites such as galactinol, threitol, sucrose, phenyl-β-glucopyranoside, dopamine, pipecolic, chelidonic and gluconic acids, phenolics such as vanillic acid, caftaric acid, orientin and isoorientin, neohesperidin, epicatechin, and isomers of caffeoylshikimic acid. This finding illustrates phenotypic responses that may not be studied effectively by genetic studies alone and provides useful insights for future diagnostic analysis of crop assessment and improvement. The Johor Strait has experienced rapid development of various human activities and served as the main marine aquaculture area for the two countries that bordered the strait. Several fish kill incidents in 2014 and 2015 have been confirmed, attributed to the algal blooms of ichthyotoxic dinoflagellates; however, the cause of fish kill events after 2016 was not clarified and the causative organisms remained unknown. To clarify the potential cause of fish kills along the Johor Strait, a 1-year field investigation was conducted with monthly sampling between May 2018 and April 2019. Monthly vertical profiles of physical water parameters (temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen levels) were measured in situ at different depths (subsurface, 1 m, 5 m, and 8 m) depending on the ambient depth of the water column at the sampling stations. The spatial-temporal variability of macronutrients and chlorophyll a content was analyzed. Our results showed that high chlorophyll a concentration (up to 48.8 μg/L) and high biomass blooms of Skeletonema, Chaetoceros, Rhizosolenia, and Thalassiosira were observed seasonally at the inner part of the strait. A hypoxic to anoxic dead zone, with the dissolved oxygen levels ranging from 0.19 to 1.7 mg/L, was identified in the inner Johor Strait, covering an estimated area of 10.3 km2. The occurrence of high biomass diatom blooms and formation of the hypoxic-anoxic zone along the inner part Johor Strait were likely the culprits of some fish kill incidents after 2016. Compost teas were proved to be used as effective biocontrol agent owing to their ability to inhibit plant diseases. In this experiment, aerated compost tea (ACT) and molasses aerated compost tea (MACT) sourced from oil palm compost were assessed to suppress against fungal pathogen namely, Grammothele lineata (KX532185) that causes leaf spot on Melicope ptelefolia leaf. Characterization of both aerated compost teas for physiochemical and microbiological analysis was carried out. All different concentrations (15%, 25%, 30%, and 40% v/v) of ACT and MACT significantly retarded the mycelial growth of Grammothele lineata in the range of 14.5–77.8% and 12.7–75.9%, respectively. The highest inhibition over Grammothele lineata was obtained by both compost teas at concentration of 40% (v/v) resulted with 12% and 14% growth only, respectively. Peroxidase (PO) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities peaked 2–4 days after Grammothele lineata fungal suspension (5 × 105 conidia/mL) challenged on fortified leaf disks. Besides, in Melicope ptelefolia leaf fortified with both compost teas, peroxidase (PO) reached the highest (245.05 IU min−1 g−1 fresh weight) after 7 days, whereas polyphenol oxidase (PPO) recorded the highest at 91.3 IU min−1 g−1 fresh weight after 4 days upon challenged by Grammothele lineata suspension (5 × 105 conidia/mL). In practice, progeny and individual palm selection are believed to be the most suitable breeding approach for improvement of quantitative traits in oil palm because their phenotypic expressions are strongly influenced by abiotic factors. Therefore progeny selection approach was applied in this study for the selection of high fresh fruit bunch (FFB) and dwarf oil palm planting materials. Cross between Deli dura and Nigerian pisifera resulted into 34 D × P full sib progenies with 1036 seedlings. For six consecutive years, data were collected on yield and yield component traits, while vegetative traits were recorded once. Bi-parental analysis was carried out using analysis of variance, followed by progenies mean comparison, variance components, heritabilities and cluster analysis. Highly significant (P ≤ 0.01) progeny effect was recorded in this study and this had a pronounced effect on the expression of all the quantitative traits. Progenies performance of FFB varied significantly and it ranged from 166.49 to 220.06 kg/palm/year (kg/p/yr) with trial mean of 192.93 kg/p/yr. Palm height after 8 years of field planting ranged from 1.67 to 2.78 m (control cross) with trial mean of 2.12 m. Broad sense heritability (hB2) was found to be very low (<17.60%) for all the yield traits, however this parameter was high for vegetative traits with palm height having hB2 of 90%. Cluster analysis based on all the quantitative traits grouped all the 34 DP progenies into nine distinct clusters. From this study, five progenies (DP3, DP4, DP5, DP8 and DP24) were identified to be high yielding and dwarf palms compare to trial mean. At density of 140 palm/ha, they will produce FFB of 28.63–30.81 t/ha and average of 29.69 t/ha which is about 27.15% higher in FFB when compared to the current planting material with FFB of 23.35 t/ha. In addition, the selected progenies possessed average annual palm increment of 29.82 cm/yr with range of 26 and 32.5 cm/yr which was 57.33% shorter than the current planting material with palm height increment of 45–75 cm/yr. Somaclonal variation arises in plants and animals when differentiated somatic cells are induced into a pluripotent state, but the resulting clones differ from each other and from their parents. In agriculture, somaclonal variation has hindered the micropropagation of elite hybrids and genetically modified crops, but the mechanism responsible remains unknown. The oil palm fruit 'mantled' abnormality is a somaclonal variant arising from tissue culture that drastically reduces yield, and has largely halted efforts to clone elite hybrids for oil production. Widely regarded as an epigenetic phenomenon, 'mantling' has defied explanation, but here we identify the MANTLED locus using epigenome-wide association studies of the African oil palm Elaeis guineensis. DNA hypomethylation of a LINE retrotransposon related to rice Karma, in the intron of the homeotic gene DEFICIENS, is common to all mantled clones and is associated with alternative splicing and premature termination. Dense methylation near the Karma splice site (termed the Good Karma epiallele) predicts normal fruit set, whereas hypomethylation (the Bad Karma epiallele) predicts homeotic transformation, parthenocarpy and marked loss of yield. Loss of Karma methylation and of small RNA in tissue culture contributes to the origin of mantled, while restoration in spontaneous revertants accounts for non-Mendelian inheritance. The ability to predict and cull mantling at the plantlet stage will facilitate the introduction of higher performing clones and optimize environmentally sensitive land resources. Purpose: The Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) is designed to assess negative thoughts in response to pain. It is composed of three domains: helplessness, rumination, and magnification. We report on the translation, adaptation, and validation of scores on a Malay-speaking version of the PCS, the PCS-MY. Method: Guidelines for the process of cross-cultural adaptations of assessment measures were implemented. A sample of 303 young military recruits participated in the study. Factor structure, reliability, and validity of scores on the PCS-MY were examined. Convergent validity was investigated with the Positive and Negative Affect Scale, Short-form 12 version 2, and Ryff's Psychological Well-being Scale. Results: Most participants were men, ranging in age from 19 to 26. The reliability of the PCS-MY scores was adequate ( α = 0.90; mean inter-item correlation = 0.43). Confirmatory factor analysis showed that a modified version of the PCS-MY provided best fit estimates to the sample data. The PCS-MY total score was negatively correlated with mental well-being and positively correlated with negative affect (all ps < 0.001). Conclusion: The PCS-MY was demonstrated to have adequate reliability and validity estimates in the study sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A key event in the domestication and breeding of the oil palm Elaeis guineensis was loss of the thick coconut-like shell surrounding the kernel. Modern E. guineensis has three fruit forms, dura (thick-shelled), pisifera (shell-less) and tenera (thin-shelled), a hybrid between dura and pisifera. The pisifera palm is usually female-sterile. The tenera palm yields far more oil than dura, and is the basis for commercial palm oil production in all of southeast Asia. Here we describe the mapping and identification of the SHELL gene responsible for the different fruit forms. Using homozygosity mapping by sequencing, we found two independent mutations in the DNA-binding domain of a homologue of the MADS-box gene SEEDSTICK (STK, also known as AGAMOUS-LIKE 11), which controls ovule identity and seed development in Arabidopsis. The SHELL gene is responsible for the tenera phenotype in both cultivated and wild palms from sub-Saharan Africa, and our findings provide a genetic explanation for the single gene hybrid vigour (or heterosis) attributed to SHELL, via heterodimerization. This gene mutation explains the single most important economic trait in oil palm, and has implications for the competing interests of global edible oil production, biofuels and rainforest conservation.
