One of the main challenges in the preservation of paper materials is the development of compatible and eco-friendly cleaning systems suitable for the wet removal of hydrophobic, aged compounds, such as greasy materials or synthetic adhesives, whose presence enhances paper degradation and worsens its optical features. To avoid the use of organic solvents that can be potentially harmful to operators, in this work we propose a new water-based gel obtained by chemical modification of gellan gum gel, a well-known paper cleaning hydrogel. With the aim of obtaining a cleaning system that is able to interact and adsorb not only hydrophilic cellulose degradation byproducts, but also greasy materials and synthetic adhesives, methacrylation has been applied on gellan gum. First, the chemical modification process of gellan gum has been monitored by means of NMR and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Then, the mechanical and physical–chemical properties of the resulting gel have been evaluated by using rheological, AFM, and wettability measurements. Finally, the compatibility and cleaning efficiency of the newly synthetized gel have been tested on paper with different age (from eighteenth and twentieth centuries) and composition by means of a multi-technique framework consisting of spectroscopic, chromatographic, SEM, colorimetric and pH measurements. This work shows a first interesting step towards the development of single component paper cleaning system, easy to use, for the removal of both cellulose hydrophilic degradation products and hydrophobic compounds from different paper typologies. Applications of metamaterials in the realization of efficient devices in the terahertz band have recently been considered to achieve wave deflection, focusing, amplitude manipulation and dynamical modulation. Terahertz metamaterials offer practical advantages since their structures have typical sizes of hundreds microns and are within the reach of current three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies. Here, we propose terahertz photonic structures composed of dielectric rods layers made of acrylonitrile styrene acrylate realized by low-cost, rapid, and versatile fused deposition modeling 3D-printing. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is employed for the experimental study of their spectral and dynamic response. Measured spectra are interpreted by using simulations performed by an analytical exact solution of the Maxwell equations for a general incidence geometry, by a field expansion as a sum over reciprocal lattice vectors. Results show that the structures possess specific spectral forbidden bands of the incident THz radiation depending on their optical and geometrical parameters. We also find evidence of disorder in the 3D printed structure resulting in the closure of the forbidden bands at frequencies above 0.3 THz. The size disorder of the structures is quantified by studying the dynamics diffusion of THz pulses as a function of the numbers of layers of dielectric rods. Comparison with simulations of light diffusion in photonic crystals with increasing disorder allows estimating the size distributions of elements. By using a Mean Squared Displacement model, from the broadening of the pulses' widths it is also possible to estimate the diffusion coefficient of the terahertz radiation in the photonic structures. For centuries mankind has stored its knowledge on paper, a remarkable biomaterial made of natural cellulose fibers. However, spontaneous cellulose degradation phenomena weaken and discolorate paper over time. The detailed knowledge of products arising from cellulose degradation is essential in understanding deterioration pathways and in improving durability of cultural heritage. In this study, for the first time, products of cellulose degradation were individually detected in solid paper samples by means of an extremely powerful proton HR-MAS NMR set-up, in combination to a wise use of both ancient and, as reference, artificially aged paper samples. Carboxylic acids, in addition to more complex dicarboxylic and hydroxy-carboxylic acids, were found in all samples studied. Since these products can catalyze further degradation, their knowledge is fundamental to improve conservation strategies of historical documents. Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a large multimeric adhesive glycoprotein, with complex roles in thrombosis and hemostasis, present in circulating blood and in secretory granules of endothelial cells and platelets. High shear stress triggers conformational changes responsible for both binding to the platelet receptor glycoprotein GpIb and its self-association, thus supporting the formation of platelet plug under flow. Ristocetin also promotes the interaction of VWF with GpIb and is able to induce platelet aggregation, and thus is largely used to mimic this effect in vitro. In this research paper, we followed the time course of VWF self-association in solution induced by ristocetin binding by light scattering and at the same time we collected atomic force microscopy images to clarify the nature of the assembly that is formed. In fact, this process evolves initially through the formation of fibrils that subsequently interact to form supramolecular structures whose dimensions would be capable of trapping platelets even in the absence of any degree of shear stress or interaction with external surfaces. This intrinsic property, that is the ability to self-aggregate, may be involved in some pathological settings that have been revealed in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the changes in the mechanical properties of the zona pellucida (ZP), a multilayer glycoprotein coat that surrounds mammalian eggs, that occur after the maturation and fertilization process of the bovine oocyte by using atomic force spectroscopy. The response of the ZP to mechanical stress has been recovered according to a modified Hertz model. ZP of immature oocytes shows a pure elastic behavior. However, for ZPs of matured and fertilized oocyte, a transition from a purely elastic behavior, which occurs when low stress forces are applied, towards a plastic behavior has been observed. The high critical force necessary to induce deformations, which supports the noncovalent long interaction lifetimes of polymers, increases after the cortical reaction. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) images show that oocyte ZP surface appears to be composed mainly of a dense, random meshwork of nonuniformly arranged fibril bundles. More wrinkled surface characterizes matured oocytes compared with immature and fertilized oocytes. From a mechanical point of view, the transition of the matured ZP membrane toward fertilized ZP, through the hardening process, consists of the recovery of the elasticity of the immature ZP while maintaining a plastic transition that, however, occurs with a much higher force compared with that required in matured ZP.
