The relation between use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and severity of COVID-19 has been the subject to debate since the outbreak of the pandemic. Despite speculations about the possible harmful or protective effects, the position currently most supported by the scientific community is that there is no association between use of NSAIDs and COVID-19 outcomes. With the aim of contributing to increase the body of evidence on this issue, we conducted a case–control study using real-world data to investigate the association between prior use of NSAIDs, by active ingredient and type (traditional NSAIDs and selective COX-2 inhibitors), and important COVID-19-related outcomes, including susceptibility, PCR + patient progression, and hospitalisation. Our findings suggest that, in general, the use of traditional NSAIDs is not associated with any adverse COVID-19 outcome. However, we observed a possible association between diclofenac and a higher risk of PCR + patient progression. Our results also suggest that selective COX-2 inhibitors might be related with a reduction in the risk of PCR + patient progression. These results suggest that, with the possible exception of diclofenac, the use of NSAIDs should not be advised against for relief of symptoms in patients with COVID-19. In addition, they support the importance of continue to investigate the treatment potential of selective COX-2 inhibitors in the management of COVID-19, something that could have significant implications for the treatment of this disease and other viral infections. In the second half of the sixteenth century, various Spanish, Italian and French poets resorted to an image foreign to the usual repertoire of amorous subjects: the wound of the lover begins to bleed due to the proximity of the lady. This reflects a popular belief that the mere presence of the murderer can cause "accusing" blood to ooze from the corpse. The idea is already found in earlier Petrarchists, such as Serafino Aquilano or Bernardo Pulci. In addition to trying to clarify the possible relations of influence between these verses, whose sources have not yet been sufficiently studied in some cases, we will see how the theme seems ideal for bringing out the genius of each poet. Introduction: Owing to controversy information surrounds effect of glucocorticoids on the evolution of COVID-19, we evaluate the effects of outpatient glucocorticoid use on the severity and progression of COVID-19 and risk of infection and analyse the effect of window of exposure and dose. Methods: We conducted a population-based case − control study, involving 4 substudies: (i) Hospitalisation; (ii) Mortality, using subjects hospitalised with a PCR + as cases and subjects without a PCR + as controls; (iii) Progression, including subjects with a PCR + (hospitalised versus non-hospitalised); and (iv) Susceptibility, with all subjects with a PCR + and subjects without a PCR +. Adjusted odds ratios (ORa) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results: The outpatient glucocorticoid use was associated with an increased risk of hospitalisation (aOR 1.79; 95% CI 1.56–2.05), mortality (aOR 2.30; 95% CI 1.68–3.15), progression (aOR 1.69; 95% CI 1.43–2.00) and susceptibility (aOR 1.29, 95% CI 1.19–1.41). Furthermore, the effects was observed to be greater at higher doses and the closer that drug use approached the outcome date, with an almost fourfold increase in mortality among users in the previous month (aOR 3.85; 95% CI 2.63–5.62). We analyze how the presence of closed timelike curves (CTCs) characterizing a time machine can be discerned by placing a local particle detector in a region of spacetime which is causally disconnected from the CTCs. Our study shows that not only can the detector tell if there are CTCs, but also that the detector can separate topological from geometrical information and distinguish periodic spacetimes without CTCs (like the Einstein cylinder), curvature, and spacetimes with topological identifications that enable time-machines. Objectives: To assess the impact of prior chronic treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs)/ angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs), both as a group and by active ingredient, on severity (risk of hospitalization and mortality), progression of and susceptibility to COVID-19. Methods: We conducted a multiple population-based case–control study in Galicia (north-west Spain). The study data were sourced from medical, administrative and clinical databases. We assessed: (1) risk of hospitalization, by selecting all patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 with PCR + as cases, and a random sample of subjects without a PCR + as controls; (2) COVID-19 mortality risk; (3) risk of disease progression; and (4) susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2, considering all patients with PCR + as cases, and the same subjects used in the previous model as controls. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were calculated. Results: ACEIs and ARBs were shown to decrease the risk of hospitalization (aOR = 0.78 [95%CI 0.69–0.89] and aOR = 0.80 [95%CI 0.72–0.90] respectively), risk of mortality (aOR = 0.71 [95%CI 0.52–0.98] and aOR = 0.69 [95%CI 0.52–0.91] respectively), and susceptibility to the virus (aOR = 0.88 [95%CI 0.82–0.94] and aOR = 0.92 [95%CI 0.86–0.97] respectively). By active ingredient: use of enalapril was associated with a significantly lower risk of hospitalization (aOR = 0.72 [95%CI 0.61–0.85]), mortality (aOR = 0.59 [95%CI 0.38–0.92]) and susceptibility to COVID-19 (aOR = 0.86 [95%CI 0.79–0.94]); and use of candesartan was associated with a decreased risk of hospitalization (aOR = 0.76 [95%CI 0.60–0.95]), mortality (aOR = 0.36 [95%CI 0.17–0.75]) and disease progression (aOR = 0.73 [95%CI 0.56–0.95]). One of the major challenges currently faced by global health systems is the prolonged COVID-19 syndrome (also known as "long COVID") which has emerged as a consequence of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. It is estimated that at least 30% of patients who have had COVID-19 will develop long COVID. In this study, our goal was to assess the plasma metabolome in a total of 100 samples collected from healthy controls, COVID-19 patients, and long COVID patients recruited in Mexico between 2020 and 2022. A targeted metabolomics approach using a combination of LC–MS/MS and FIA MS/MS was performed to quantify 108 metabolites. IL-17 and leptin were measured in long COVID patients by immunoenzymatic assay. The comparison of paired COVID-19/long COVID-19 samples revealed 53 metabolites that were statistically different. Compared to controls, 27 metabolites remained dysregulated even after two years. Post-COVID-19 patients displayed a heterogeneous metabolic profile. Lactic acid, lactate/pyruvate ratio, ornithine/citrulline ratio, and arginine were identified as the most relevant metabolites for distinguishing patients with more complicated long COVID evolution. Additionally, IL-17 levels were significantly increased in these patients. Mitochondrial dysfunction, redox state imbalance, impaired energy metabolism, and chronic immune dysregulation are likely to be the main hallmarks of long COVID even two years after acute COVID-19 infection. We demonstrate how one can use machine learning techniques to bypass the technical difficulties of designing an experiment and translating its outcomes into concrete claims about fundamental features of quantum fields. In practice, all measurements of quantum fields are carried out through local probes. Despite measuring only a small portion of the field, such local measurements have the capacity to reveal many of the field's global features. This is because, when in equilibrium with their environments, quantum fields store global information locally, albeit in a scrambled way. We show that neural networks can be trained to unscramble this information from data generated from a very simple one-size-fits-all local measurement protocol. To illustrate this general claim we will consider three non-trivial features of the field as case studies: a) how, as long as the field is in a stationary state, a particle detector can learn about the field's boundary conditions even before signals have time to propagate from the boundary to the detector, b) how detectors can determine the temperature of the quantum field even without thermalizing with it, and c) how detectors can distinguish between Fock states and coherent states even when the first and second moments of all their quadrature operators match. Each of these examples uses the exact same simple fixed local measurement protocol and machine-learning ansatz successfully. This supports the claim that the framework proposed here can be applied to nearly any kind of local measurement on a quantum field to reveal nearly any of the field's global properties in a one-size-fits-all manner. We present a framework to study the entanglement structure of a quantum field theory inspired by the formalism of particle detectors in relativistic quantum information. This framework can in principle be used to faithfully capture entanglement in a QFT between arbitrary-shaped regions of spacetime without encountering UV divergences, bypassing many of the issues typically present in other approaches. Our results also establish the limits of the efficiency of entanglement harvesting, and may also be used to motivate an operational definition of entanglement between spacetime subregions in field theory. In this review, research on the use of microalgae as an option for bioremediation purposes of pharmaceutical compounds is reported and discussed thoroughly. Pharmaceuticals have been detected in water bodies around the world, attracting attention towards the increasing potential risks to humans and aquatic biota. Unfortunately, pharmaceuticals have no regulatory standards for safe disposal in many countries. Despite the advances in new analytical techniques, the current wastewater treatment facilities in many countries are ineffective to remove the whole presence of pharmaceutical compounds and their metabolites. Though new methods are substantially effective, removal rates of drugs from wastewater make the cost-effectiveness ratio a not viable option. Therefore, the necessity for investigating and developing more adequate removal treatments with a higher efficiency rate and at a lower cost is mandatory. The present review highlights the algae-based removal strategies for bioremediation purposes, considering their pathway as well as the removal rate and efficiency of the microalgae species used in assays. We have critically reviewed both application of living and non-living microalgae biomass for bioremediation purposes considering the most commonly used microalgae species. In addition, the use of modified and immobilized microalgae biomass for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from water was discussed. Furthermore, research considering various microalgal species and their potential use to detoxify organic and inorganic toxic compounds were well evaluated in the review. Introduction: Little is known about the role played by anticoagulants in COVID-19. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of previous anticoagulant treatment on risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19, progression to severe COVID-19 and susceptibility to COVID-19 infection. Methods: We conducted a multiple population-based case–control study in northwest Spain, in 2020, to assess (1) risk of hospitalization: cases were all patients admitted due to COVID-19 with PCR confirmation, and controls were a random matched sample of subjects without a positive PCR; (2) progression: cases were hospitalized COVID-19 subjects, and controls were all non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients; and (3) susceptibility: cases were patients with a positive PCR (hospitalized and non-hospitalized), and the controls were the same as for the hospitalization model. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using a generalized linear mixed model. Results: The consumption of antivitamin K and direct-acting anticoagulants apparently was not associated with the risk of progression to severe COVID-19 (OR 0.93 [95% CI 0.74–1.17] and OR 1.04 [95% CI 0.79–1.36], respectively). Antivitamin K anticoagulants were associated with a significantly lower risk of hospitalization (OR 0.77 [95% CI 0.64–0.93]), which, in part, can be explained by a decreased risk of susceptibility to infection (OR 0.83 [95% CI 0.74–0.92]). The use of direct-acting anticoagulants was not associated with the risk of hospitalization, although it also seems to decrease susceptibility (OR 0.85 [95% CI 0.74–0.98]). It has also been observed that low-molecular-weight heparins were associated with an increased risk of progression to severe COVID-19 (OR 1.25 [95% CI 1.01–1.55]). Conclusion: The results of this study have shown that antivitamin K anticoagulants and direct-acting anticoagulants do not increase the risk of progression to more severe stages. Nanotechnology is one of the most important and relevant disciplines today due to the specific electrical, optical, magnetic, chemical, mechanical and biomedical properties of nanoparticles. In the present study we demonstrate the efficacy of Cuphea procumbens to biogenerate silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antibacterial and antitumor activity. These nanoparticles were synthesized using the aqueous extract of C. procumbens as reducing agent and silver nitrate as oxidizing agent. The Transmission Electron Microscopy demonstrated that the biogenic AgNPs were predominantly quasi-spherical with an average particle size of 23.45 nm. The surface plasmonic resonance was analyzed by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis) observing a maximum absorption band at 441 nm and Infrared Spectroscopy (FT IR) was used in order to structurally identify the functional groups of some compounds involved in the formation of nanoparticles. The AgNPs demonstrated to have antibacterial activity against the pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, identifying the maximum zone of inhibition at the concentration of 0.225 and 0.158 µg/mL respectively. Moreover, compared to the extract, AgNPs exhibited better antitumor activity and higher therapeutic index (TI) against several tumor cell lines such as human breast carcinoma MCF-7 (IC50 of 2.56 µg/mL, TI of 27.65 µg/mL), MDA-MB-468 (IC50 of 2.25 µg/mL, TI of 31.53 µg/mL), human colon carcinoma HCT-116 (IC50 of 1.38 µg/mL, TI of 51.07 µg/mL) and melanoma A-375 (IC50 of 6.51 µg/mL, TI of 10.89 µg/mL). This fact is of great since it will reduce the side effects derived from the treatment. In addition, AgNPs revealed to have a photocatalytic activity of the dyes congo red (10–3 M) in 5 min and malachite green (10–3 M) in 7 min. Additionally, the degradation percentages were obtained, which were 86.61% for congo red and 82.11% for malachite green. Overall, our results demonstrated for the first time that C. procumbens biogenerated nanoparticles are excellent candidates for several biomedical and environmental applications. This study analyzed the nutrients and metals concentrations of the surrounding soils and sclerophyllous vegetation of a tailing at the CODELCO–El Teniente copper mine in Central Chile. The content of metal, macro-, and micronutrients were analyzed in the soils outward from the tailing till 60-m distance at depths of 30, 60, and 90 cm, and in the foliage and stems of the native vegetation associated to the tailing. At plant level, we measured height, diameter, level of damage, and physiological attributes. Cu, Ni, Cr, and As were higher in the tailing, whereas soil Mn and Fe were higher at 60 m from the tailing. Soil K was higher at 30-cm depth, whereas Na was higher at 90-cm depth. Foliar Cu was higher in Acacia caven (40.5 mg kg−1), whereas the levels of Cu and Zn in stems were higher in Quillaja saponaria (6.5 mg kg−1 for Cu and 13.1 mg kg−1 for Zn). As the values of water potential and quantum efficiency of the photosystem II averaged − 1.1 MPa and 0.73, respectively, these two species exhibited no physiological stress. Only Q. saponaria tended to increase the level of damage at higher distances from the tailing. A. caven and Q. saponaria exhibited foliar contents of Cu and Fe considered toxic (Cu from 18.5 to 40.5 and Fe from 298 to 407 mg kg−1); however, both species were able to prosper at the limit of the tailing. Behçet syndrome (BS) is a unique type of vasculitis that affects veins and arteries of all sizes, leading to recurrent vascular events, mostly venous thrombosis. The prevalence of venous thromboembolism in BS patients ranges between 15 and 40%. Thrombosis is usually an early manifestation leading to diagnosis of BS in up to 40% of patients. BS is per se a model of inflammation-induced thrombosis. The primary autoimmune response activates lymphocytes that in turn produce a cytokine cascade that activates neutrophils, which modify the secondary structure of fibrinogen making it less susceptible to plasmin-induced lysis. This leads to endothelial dysfunction, platelet activation and overexpression of tissue factor leading to inflammatory thrombi, usually attached to the wall. The pathogenesis of thrombosis is especially relevant to direct the specific treatment, that is based on immunosuppression rather than anticoagulation. Superficial vein thrombosis (SVT) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are the most common form of thrombosis in BS, but thrombosis in atypical sites (cava vein, suprahepatic veins, intracardiac thrombus) and arterial involvement can also occur. We assessed the latest update of the European League Against Rheumatism recommendations for the management of BS. Vascular Behçet treatment is usually based of immunosuppressants, and the role of anticoagulation remains controversial. We study the relationship between the quantization of a massless scalar field on the two-dimensional Einstein cylinder and in a spacetime with a time machine. We find that the latter picks out a unique prescription for the state of the zero mode in the Einstein cylinder. We show how this choice arises from the computation of the vacuum Wightman function and the vacuum renormalized stress-energy tensor in the time-machine geometry. Finally, we relate the previously proposed regularization of the zero mode state as a squeezed state with the time-machine warp parameter, thus demonstrating that the quantization in the latter regularizes the quantization in an Einstein cylinder. Combining traditional medicine with nanotechnology therefore opens the door to innovative strategies for treating skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and also contributes to the fight against the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Acanthospermum australe (Loefl.) Kuntze is a medicinal plant used by indigenous peoples in northeastern Argentina to treat SSTIs. Spherical and stable silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of 14 ± 2 nm were synthesized from the aqueous extract of A. australe and silver nitrate. The antimicrobial activity against main species causing SSTIs and cytotoxicity on peripheral blood mononuclear cells of AgNP solution and its synthesis components were evaluated. Compared to its synthesis components, AgNP solution showed greater antimicrobial activity and lower cytotoxicity. The antimicrobial activity of AgNPs was due to the silver and not to the metabolites of the aqueous extract present on the surface of the nanoparticles. The plant extract played an important role in the formation of stable AgNPs and acted as a modulator of cytotoxic and immune responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes are an excellent ecopolymer product that has been proposed for many applications, including acoustic, biomedical, and fabrics. However, those uses require the membranes' exposure to environmental conditions related to shelf storage, washing, or excess of humidity that are not usually evaluated when developing new materials. In this work, we investigated the effect of high and low temperature, and high humidity accelerated exposure on the physical and mechanical properties of BC membranes prepared from Kombucha fermentation. We prepared BC membranes following standard protocols and subjected them to a composite temperature/humidity accelerated cyclic assay. The mechanical and physical properties of the membranes were measured before and after the assay. We found that the ultimate tensile strength, elastic modulus, and elongation at break significantly changed after the assay. We also observed a few morphology changes, but no changes in the DSC and IR determinations. Our results suggest that environmental tests should be performed in every biodegradable polymer according to their intended use to determine their applications fully. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest restoration have had limited success due to intense and prolonged droughts in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. In this context, knowledge of growth and physiology in seedlings of different provenances can be useful in the selection of appropriate seed sources for restoration. In this study we investigated variations in survival, growth, and leaf-level physiology of five provenances of Quillaja saponaria Mol. and five provenances of Cryptocarya alba Mol. originated from coastal and Pre Andean sites exhibiting latitudinal-related climate differences in central Chile. Seedlings were grown in a nursery on 600 mL pots for 18 months and then planted in a dryland site severely damaged by fire. One year after establishment, we measured survival, growth, and leaf-level physiology. We also analyzed the relationship between outplanting survival with seedling characteristics prior to planting, and the relationship between growth and survival with physiological traits and with climate variables. Growth and survival were similar among provenances of Q. saponaria and C. alba, with the exception of differing heights observed within the provenance of Q. saponaria. Initial root collar diameter of Q. saponaria was observed to be positively correlated to outplanting survival. With the exception of photosynthesis in Q. saponaria, all provenances of both species differed in the leaf-level physiological traits. Those provenances originating from interior dryland sites exhibited lower stomatal conductance and used water more efficiently. The opposite was true for provenances coming from coastal sites. In outplanting sites with Mediterranean-type climates that have been damage by severe fire, selections based on larger diameter seedlings, especially for Q. saponaria and from interior and pre-Andean provenances, will likely improve outplanting success. The optimum range of pulse oximeter oxygen saturation (SpO2) for preterm infants remains controversial. Between November 2015 and February 2016, we conducted a web-based survey aimed to investigate the current and former practices on SpO2 targets in European neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). We obtained valid responses from 193 NICUs, treating 8590 newborns ≤28 weeks per year, across 27 countries. Forty different saturation ranges were reported, ranging from 82-93 to 94-99%. The most frequently utilized SpO2 ranges were 90-95% (28%), 88-95% (12%), 90-94% (5%), and 91-95% (5%). A total of 156 NICUs (81%) changed their SpO2 limits over the last 10 years. The most frequently reported former limits were 88-92% (18%), 85-95% (9%), 88-93 (7%), and 85-92% (6%). The NICUs that increased their SpO2 ranges expected to obtain a reduction in mortality. A 54% of the NICUs found the scientific evidence supporting their SpO2 targeting policy strong or very strong.Conclusion: We detected a high degree of heterogeneity in pulse oximeter SpO2 target limits across European NICUs. The currently used limits are 3 to 5% higher than the former limits, and the most extreme limits, such as lower below 85% or upper above 96%, have almost been abandoned. What is Known: • For preterm infants requiring supplemental oxygen, the optimum range of pulse oximeter oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) to minimize organ damage, without causing hypoxic injury, remains controversial. The root bark of Semialarium mexicanum (Miers) Mennega (cancerina) is traditionally used in Mexico to treat cancer. However, there are no studies supporting its use. We evaluated whether S. mexicanum root bark induces cytotoxicity in breast cancer cells to determine if it has potential applications in the treatment of this disease. Extracts of S. mexicanum root bark in petroleum ether, ethanol, and water were obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction. MTT and WST-1 assays were used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the extracts toward breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF7), non-tumorigenic breast-derived cells (MCF 10A), and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). For the extract with greatest cytotoxicity, induction of apoptosis and oxidative stress were determined using flow cytometry. The extract was fractionated, and the cytotoxicity of its fractions was evaluated with the four cell types. The fractions were also analyzed by HPLC. Only the petroleum ether extract was cytotoxic for all cell types (MDA-MB-231 > MCF 10A/MCF7 > PBMCs). Cell death occurred by apoptosis, which could be associated with the induction of oxidative stress. Two fractions that were highly cytotoxic for breast cancer cells were obtained from this extract (IC50 ≤ 4.15 µg/mL for the most active fraction at 72 h). The MCF 10A cells were less affected, while PBMCs were not affected after 72 h of treatment. Pristimerin was identified in both fractions and may be partially responsible for the cytotoxic effect. Unravelling the mechanisms of how antibiotics influence growth performance through changes in gut microbiota can lead to the identification of highly productive microbiota in animal production. Here we investigated the effect of zinc bacitracin and avilamycin on growth performance and caecal microbiota in chickens and analysed associations between individual bacteria and growth performance. Two trials were undertaken; each used 96 individually caged 15-day-old Cobb broilers. Trial 1 had a control group ( n = 48) and a zinc bacitracin (50 ppm) treatment group ( n = 48). Trial 2 had a control group ( n = 48) and an avilamycin (15 ppm) treatment group ( n = 48). Chicken growth performance was evaluated over a 10-day period, and caecal microbiota was characterised by sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicons. Avilamycin produced no effect on growth performance and exhibited little significant disturbance of the microbiota structure. However, zinc bacitracin reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) in treated birds, changed the composition and increased the diversity of their caecal microbiota by reducing dominant species. Avilamycin only produced minor reductions in the abundance of two microbial taxa, whereas zinc bacitracin produced relatively large shifts in a number of taxa, primarily Lactobacillus species. Also, a number of phylotypes closely related to lactobacilli species were positively or negatively correlated with FCR values, suggesting contrasting effects of Lactobacillus spp. on chicken growth performance. A central composite design using RMS (Response Surface Methodology) successfully described the effect of independent variables (feed moisture, die temperature and soybean proportion) on the specific parameters of product quality as expansion index (EI), water absorption index (WAI), water solubility index (WSI) and total color difference (ΔE) studied. The regression model indicated that EI, WAI, WSI and ΔE were significant ( p < 0.05) with coefficients of determination (R) of 0.7371, 0.7588, 0.7622, 0.8150, respectively. The optimized processing conditions were obtained with 25.8 % feed moisture, 160 °C die temperature and 58 %/42 % soybean/corn proportion. It was not found statistically changes in amino acid profile due to extrusion process. The electrophoretic profile of extruded soybean/corn mix presented low intensity molecular weight bands, compared to the unprocessed sample. The generation of low molecular weight polypeptides was associated to an increased in In vitro protein digestibility (IVPD) of the extrudate. The FTIR spectra of the soybean/corn mix before and after extrusion showed that the α-helix structure remained unchanged after extrusion. However, the band associated with β-sheet structure showed to be split into two bands at 1624 and 1640 cm . Purpose: This paper studies the influence of the mechanical design of five different induction hob generations (G1 to G5), which are currently installed in several million homes, on the evolution of their environmental impact. Methods: Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been applied using SimaPro 8.0.3.14 and EcoInvent v2.2 database. Samples of each design were obtained to generate a life cycle inventory. These induction hobs have been developed and produced in Zaragoza (Spain). The functional unit has been defined as all of the components influenced by the mechanical design of a cooktop with four induction hobs and a width of 60 cm, including every component except the electronic boards and the use phase, as they are not affected by the mechanical design. The limits of the LCA model include the production of the raw materials and energy, the manufacture and production processes, the distribution, and the end of life. Results and discussion: This study has revealed that the differences in mechanical design highly affect the environmental impact, especially in the environmental categories of abiotic depletion and human toxicity due to the consumption of copper, steel, and plastics. The manufacturing phase highly affects human toxicity, mainly due to the variation in PPS use. There is a decreasing tendency in the environmental impact from the first (G1) to the last generation (G5), as G5 causes the lowest burden in 8 out of 11 analysed categories. The different generations analysed in this paper show that the compact designs of induction hobs help to decrease the environmental impact, especially thanks to the reduction in wiring lengths. It is also important to enhance the wiring separation at the end-of-life phase, avoiding designs that hinder recycling processes. Conclusions: Compact designs and reduced wiring lengths help to reduce the environmental impact. The consumption of copper, steel, aluminium, and polymers creates considerable impact, although the end-of-life phase reduces the burden created by metals, thanks to recycling. Manufacturing processes such as injection moulding also produce a noteworthy impact, especially in ozone layer depletion due to the inclusion of solvents in EcoInvent's injection moulding dataset. We show how Berry phase can be used to construct a precision quantum thermometer. An important advantage of our scheme is that there is no need for the thermometer to acquire thermal equilibrium with the sample. This reduces measurement times and avoids precision limitations. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been suggested as a potential tool for the anticancer treatment, but their pharmacological effect has not been tested in vivo because of their high reactivity and adverse effects. In this study, we developed AgNPs of 5 ± 2 nm of diameter through the chemical reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO) with dextrose, employing gelatin as a surfactant agent, and encapsulated them in nanocarriers with a biocompatible surface based on polyethylene glycol through a modification of the emulsion solvent-evaporation technique. AgNPs nanocarriers (AgNPs-NT) showed diameters between 30 nm and 120 nm in dry samples and from 40 nm to 250 nm in aqueous solution. Different doses of free and encapsulated AgNPs were evaluated in vitro on the cervical cancer-derived cell lines HeLa and CaSki, by flow cytometry studies at 24 h, employing propidium iodide (PI) and carboxyfluorescein diacetate succinimidyl ester (CFSE) as reporter molecules. Both free and encapsulated AgNPs were toxic for both cell lines, inducing important decrements on the cell viability compared with cisplatin (PC, 0.250 mM) and the negative control (NCtrl) comprising only the cell culture media, the vehicle of the AgNPs (0.360 mM), and the vehicle of the AgNPs-NT (1.089 mM). In both cases (HeLa and CaSki cells), AgNPs-NT seem to be less effective than free AgNPs, but this AgNPs-NT had a biocompatible surface, adequate size, and high toxicity observed in vitro. We recently described a novel g.8097_22733del14637 deletion encompassing exons 3-5 in BRCA1 gene. This rearrangement was detected in 3 of 15 (20 %) breast and/or ovarian cancer families of Eastern Spain. This finding made us suspect that the newly identified deletion could be a founder mutation. To confirm this hypothesis we studied 18 subjects belonging to the three families under study, 11 deletion carriers and 7 non-carriers. We performed a haplotype analysis using two BRCA1 intragenic microsatellite markers and two markers surrounding the BRCA1 locus. The segregation analysis showed one common particular haplotype established by D17S1325, D17S1323, D17S855 and D17S1320 markers detected in the deletion carriers but absent in the non-carriers. Our study sustain that the deletion of exons 3-5 of BRCA1, g.8097_22733del14637, identified in families of southeastern of the Valencian Community is the first founder rearrangement until now reported in Spanish population, confirming the hypothesis that this mutation could have Iberian ancestry. CeO, CeMO, {M = Ru, In} compounds with sensing properties were fabricated using the sol-gel route. The main purpose was to compare the efficiency of CeO vs. CeMO doped compounds as gas sensors for NO detection. Characterization was performed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and surface area determination (BET). Measurements of electrical resistance under different conditions of time, concentration and temperature in the presence of NO were carried out. Ruthenium inclusion increased the CeO sensor response in a great extent, gas response (S) = 1.8 for CeO vs. gas response (S) = 350 for CeRuO and gas response (S) = 35 for CeInO. This behavior is reported by the first time. Our results demonstrate that ruthenium or indium inclusion has been beneficial for CeO. Child maltreatment and substance abuse are both international public health priorities. Research shows that child maltreatment increases the risk for substance use and problems. Thus, recognition of this relationship may have important implications for substance demand reduction strategies, including efforts to prevent and treat substance use and related problems. Latin America and the Caribbean is a rich and diverse region of the world with a large range of social and cultural influences. To date, relatively little work has addressed the link between child maltreatment and substance use in the region. A working group constituted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in June, 2010 identified this area as a priority area for a multinational research partnership. This paper summarizes existing information on drug use and child maltreatment in six participating countries, Colombia, El Salvador, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama and Uruguay, and considers the implications of child maltreatment prevention for demand reduction strategies to address substance use issues. A CICAD/CAMH-sponsored multinational research partnership has been formed, which will involve research on the link between child maltreatment and substance misuse, expertise exchange and resource sharing. Colloidal silver nanoparticles were synthesized by reducing silver nitrate solutions with glucose, in the presence of gelatin as capping agent. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The response surface methodology (RSM) was also used to determine the influence of the variables on the size of the nanoparticles. The antifungal activity of the silver nanoparticles was evaluated on the phytopathogen Colletotrichum gloesporioides, which causes anthracnose in a wide range of fruits. The UV-Vis spectra indicated the formation of silver nanoparticles preferably spherical and of relatively small size (<20 nm). The above-mentioned was confirmed by TEM, observing a size distribution of 5-24 nm. According to RSM the synthesis variables influenced on the size of the silver nanoparticles. By means of FTIR spectroscopy it was determined that gelatin, through their amide and hydroxyl groups, interacts with nanoparticles preventing their agglomeration. The growth of C. gloesporioides in the presence of silver nanoparticles was significantly delayed in a dose dependent manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the application of the laser photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) for quantification of total carotenoids (TC) in corn flours and sweetpotato flours. Overall, thirty-three different corn flours and nine sweetpotato flours were investigated. All PAS measurements were performed at room temperature using 488-nm argon laser radiation for excitation and mechanical modulation of 9 and 30 Hz. The measurements were repeated within a run and within several days or months. The UV-Vis spectrophotometry was used as the reference method. The concentration range that allows for the reliable analysis of TC spans a region from 1 to 40 mg kg for corn flours and from 9 to 40 mg kg for sweetpotato flours. In the case of sweetpotato flours, the quantification may extend even to 240 mg kg TC. The estimated detection limit values for TC in corn and sweetpotato flours were 0.1 and 0.3 mg kg, respectively. The computed repeatability ( n = 3-12) and intermediate precision ( n = 6-28) RSD values at 9 and 30 Hz are comparable: 0.1-17.1% and 5.3-14.7% for corn flours as compared with 1.4-9.1% and 4.2-23.0% for sweetpotato flours. Our results show that PAS can be successfully used as a new analytical tool to simply and rapidly screen the flours for their nutritional potential based on the total carotenoid concentration. Notches in thin ferromagnetic strips act as pinning centers for the domain walls (DWs) existing in them, due to the locally lowering of the DW magnetostatic energy, that is, the formation of a pinning potential well. The work presents the study of the DW dynamics under the application of an in-plane magnetic field directed along the largest dimension of the strip. The strip has one constriction which consists of a couple of rectangular notches symmetrically placed on it, where a head-to-head DW has been pinned. The applied field is composed of two terms: a constant value plus a harmonically oscillating one. The constant part is fixed to different values lower than the required constant field to force the DW depinning while the amplitude of the harmonic part is investigated in order to produce the DW depinning at different frequencies. A resonant-like behavior can be observed if the frequency of the harmonic field is of the order of magnitude of the DW natural oscillation frequency. However, the resulting DW energy absorption peak is not centered at this natural oscillation frequency. On the contrary, it noticeably shifts to lower frequencies. This behavior is then explained by the increase of the DW exchange energy as it oscillates, and the nonlinearities which are present for large applied fields in the restoring force associated to the presence of the notch. This paper studies the construction of geometric integrators for nonholonomic systems. We develop a formalism for nonholonomic discrete Euler–Lagrange equations in a setting that permits to deduce geometric integrators for continuous nonholonomic systems (reduced or not). The formalism is given in terms of Lie groupoids, specifying a discrete Lagrangian and a constraint submanifold on it. Additionally, it is necessary to fix a vector subbundle of the Lie algebroid associated to the Lie groupoid. We also discuss the existence of nonholonomic evolution operators in terms of the discrete nonholonomic Legendre transformations and in terms of adequate decompositions of the prolongation of the Lie groupoid. The characterization of the reversibility of the evolution operator and the discrete nonholonomic momentum equation are also considered. Finally, we illustrate with several classical examples the wide range of application of the theory (the discrete nonholonomic constrained particle, the Suslov system, the Chaplygin sleigh, the Veselova system, the rolling ball on a rotating table and the two wheeled planar mobile robot). Production of immunogenic hepatitis C virus (HCV) envelope proteins will assist in the future development of preventive or therapeutics applications. Only properly folded monomeric E2 protein is able to bind a putative cellular co-receptor CD81, but this interaction may modulate cell immune function. Recombinant E2 proteins, similar to the native form, but lacking undesirable immunoregulatory features, might be promising components of vaccine candidates against HCV. To obtain E2 suitable for structural as well as functional studies, a recombinant E2 variant (E2680) was produced in Pichia pastoris cells. E2680, comprising amino acids 384 to 680 of the HCV polyprotein, was secreted into the culture supernatant in the N-glycosilated form and was mainly composed of disulide-linked multimers. Both monomeric and oligomeric forms of E2680 were recognized by conformational-sensitive MAb H53. In addition, antibodies in sera from 70% of HCV-positive patients were reactive against E2680. By immunizing E2680 in BALB/c mice, both a specific cellular immune response and anti-E2680 IgG antibody titers of 1:200,000 were induced. We have found a direct relationship between protein production inPichia pastorisand the number of introduced synthetic genes of miniproinsulin (MPI), fused to theSaccharomyces cerevisiaepre-pro alpha factor used as secretion signal, and inserted between the alcohol oxidase 1 (AOX1) promoter and terminator sequences. Two consecutive approaches were followed to increase the number of integrated cassettes: the head-to-tail expression cassette multimerization procedure and re-transformation with a dominant selection marker. This increased expression from 19 to 250 mg l-1 when about 11 copies have been integrated. Further, the correct position of one of the disulphide bridges of the purified molecule was verified by digestion with Glu-C endoprotease, followed by mass spectrometry of the isolated fragments. Increased expression of recombinant mini-proinsulin in Pichia pastoris in 2.5 l bioreactors was achieved by increasing the cultivation pH from 5.1 to 6.3, by decreasing the temperature from 28 to 22 °C, and by periodical addition of ammonium sulfate and EDTA to the culture broth. Objectives: Obesity, hypertension and diabetes are closely associated with endometrial cancer (EC). This study evaluates the relationship between diabetes and risk of EC on the basis of obesity.Methods: A case control study was carried out in Mexico City from 1995 to 1997. Eighty-five histologically confirmed cases were compared with 668 population-based controls obtained through frequency matching. Diabetes status, weight, height and other factors were determined through personal interviews among both cases and controls.Results: Compared to women without diabetes, those with diabetes had an adjusted odds ratio of 3.6 (95% CI = 1.7, 7.4) for EC. This association was modified by body mass index (p interaction < 0.001). Compared to non-overweight and non-diabetic women, non-overweight (OR = 3.9. 95% CI = 0.88, 18.0) and overweight (OR = 5.9, 95% CI = 1.6, 21.1) diabetic women had a non-significant elevated risk of EC. However, elevated risk estimates were observed for obese diabetic women (OR = 8.0, 95% CI = 2.8, 22.7).Conclusions: Our results strongly suggest an interaction effect between obesity and diabetes that significantly increases the risk of EC. This, in turn, may explain the growing number of new EC cases recently observed in developing countries with reduced birth rates and an increased incidence of both obesity and diabetes mellitus.
