Self-organisation (self-optimisation, self-configuration, and self-healing) methods are a promising concept to automate wireless access network planning, deployment and optimisation. This paper contains a mind setting exercise. First the mechanisms for which self-organisation is anticipated to be effective and feasible are identified. Then technical and non-technical requirements that need to be taken into account for the successful development of self-organisation functionalities are discussed. Furthermore, a set of metrics and appropriate reference cases (benchmarks) are presented, which allow to do on one hand a quantitative comparison of the different algorithms developed for a given use case, and on the other hand to evaluate the gains from self-organisation by comparing self-organisation solutions with the case of manual network operations. The Enhanced Uplink (EUL) is expected to provide higher capacity, increased data rates and smaller latency on the communication link from users towards the network. A key mechanism in the EUL traffic handling is the packet scheduler. In this paper we present a performance comparison of three distinct EUL scheduling schemes (one-by-one, partial parallel and full parallel) taking into account both the packet level characteristics and the flow level dynamics due to the random user behavior. For that purpose, we develop a hybrid analytical/simulation approach allowing for fast evaluation of performance measures such as mean file transfer time and fairness expressing how the performance depends on the user΄s location. In support of the on-going research and development activity in the design and performance assessment of radio access network integration schemes, we present novel resource sharing models for the efficient simulation of multi-access networks involving gsm/edge, umts/hsdpa and 802.11a-based wlan systems. The applicability of the proposed models in determining call and system level performance measures is demonstrated by means of a limited set of illustrative numerical experiments revealing the significant performance gains when integrating distinct access networks with a rather simple radio access selection scheme.
