Background: Plasmapheresis is widely used for severe hypertriglyceridemia-associated acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP) to remove excessive triglycerides from plasma. This study aimed to evaluate whether plasmapheresis could improve the duration of organ failure in HTG-AP patients. Methods: We analyzed a cohort of patients from a multicenter, prospective, long-running registry (the PERFORM) collecting HTG-AP patients admitted to the study sites within 72 h from the onset of symptoms. This study was based on data collected from November 2020 to March 2023. Patients who had organ failure at enrollment were involved in the analyses. The primary outcome was time to organ failure resolution within 14 days. Multivariable Cox regression model was used to evaluate the association between plasmapheresis and time to organ failure resolution. Directed acyclic graph (DAG) was used to identify potential confounders. Results: A total of 122 HTG-AP patients were included (median [IQR] sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score at enrollment, 3.00 [2.00–4.00]). Among the study patients, 46 underwent plasmapheresis, and 76 received medical treatment. The DAG revealed that baseline serum triglyceride, APACHE II score, respiratory failure, cardiovascular failure, and renal failure were potential confounders. After adjusting for the selected confounders, there was no significant difference in time to organ failure resolution between patients undergoing plasmapheresis and those receiving exclusive medical treatment (HR = 1.07; 95%CI 0.68–1.68; P = 0.777). Moreover, the use of plasmapheresis was associated with higher ICU requirements (97.8% [45/46] vs. 65.8% [50/76]; OR, 19.33; 95%CI 2.20 to 169.81; P = 0.008). Conclusions: In HTG-AP patients with early organ failure, plasmapheresis was not associated with accelerated organ failure resolution compared to medical treatment but may be associated with more ICU admissions. Background and aims: The optimal energy delivery for mechanically ventilated patients is controversial, particularly during the first week of ICU admission. This study aimed to investigate the association between different caloric adequacy and 28-day mortality in a cohort of critically ill adults on mechanical ventilation. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of a multicenter, cluster-randomized controlled trial. Eligible patients were divided into four quartiles (Q1-Q4) according to caloric adequacy calculated by the actual average daily energy delivery during the first seven days of ICU stay divided by energy requirement as a percentage. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the impact of different quartiles of caloric adequacy on 28-day mortality in the whole cohort and subgroups with different nutritional risk status at enrollment. Results: A total of 1587 patients were included in this study, with an overall 28-day mortality of 15.8%. The average caloric adequacy was 26.3 ± 11.9% (Q1), 52.5 ± 5.5% (Q2), 71.7 ± 6.4% (Q3), 107.0 ± 22.2% (Q4), respectively (p < 0.001 among quartiles). Compared with Q1, Q3 was associated with lower mortality in the unadjusted model (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.536; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.375–0.767; P = 0.001) and adjusted model (adjusted HR = 0.508; 95% CI, 0.339–0.761; P = 0.001). This association remained valid in the subgroup of high nutritional risk patients (unadjusted HR = 0.387; 95% CI, 0.238–0.627; P < 0.001 and adjusted HR = 0.369; 95% CI, 0.216–0.630; P < 0.001, respectively), but not in those with low risk. Conclusions: Energy delivery near the 70% energy requirements in the first week of ICU stay was associated with reduced 28-day mortality among mechanically ventilated critically ill patients, especially in patients with high nutrition risk at admission. To evaluate the independent association of seasonal variation with GDM incidence in Tianjin, China, and to test whether there is an additive interaction between seasonal variation and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) on GDM incidence. A population-based observational cohort study was conducted using the healthcare records data from Tianjin, China. Logistic regression was used to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Additive interaction between pre-pregnancy BMI groups and seasons was estimated by using relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP), and synergy index (S). Among the 112,639 pregnant women, 20.8% developed GDM at 24–28 weeks of gestation. The multivariable adjusted ORs and 95% CIs were 1.00, 1.00 (0.96–1.05), 1.15 (1.09–1.20) and 1.22 (1.16–1.29) respectively based on seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter). Compared with the spring/summer and pre-pregnant BMI < 24 kg/m2 group, co-presence of autumn/winter and pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2 increased the OR from 1.00 to 2.70 (95% CI 2.28–3.20), with a significant additive interaction: RERI (0.32, 95% CI 0.19–0.45), S (1.21, 95% CI 1.12–1.31) and AP (0.11, 95% CI 0.07–0.16). Autumn/winter is an independent risk factor for GDM incidence, and can significantly amplify the obesity-associated risk for GDM incidence. The underlying mechanism warrants further investigations. Context: Climate and soil factors play central roles in shaping grassland landscapes. However, an accurate assessment of how these factors influence grassland plant diversity has been scarce and difficult because soil properties are determined partly by climate factors, and diversity can be characterized in variety of ways. Objective: We aimed to explore how and to what extent climate and soil factors influence different components (richness vs. evenness) and levels (among- vs. within-species) of plant diversity. Methods: We used the linear and the structural equation models to examine the impacts of 16 soil and climate factors on the four diversity indices across 113 Qinghai-Tibetan grassland sites. Results: Species richness was negatively correlated with sunshine hours, temperature and soil pH, but positively with soil fertility and climate moisture (precipitation and relative humidity). By contrast, Pielou evenness and individual size inequality (ISI) were correlated positively with temperature, but negatively with soil fertility and climate moisture. The main factor affecting species richness and Shannon diversity directly (or indirectly through soil pH and total nitrogen content) was precipitation, whereas precipitation and temperature together governed ISI. Moreover, total soil nitrogen (or phosphorus) content was the significant factor increasing (or decreasing) ISI. Conclusion: Results suggest that moisture conditions, especially precipitation, are the main driver of landscape-scale biodiversity. Background: While the management of infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) has evolved in the last two decades with the adoption of minimally invasive interventions (drainage ± debridement), it is unknown whether the principle of delaying intervention inherited from the open surgery era still applies. The aim of the current study was to investigate the impact of the timing of minimally invasive intervention on the outcomes of patients with IPN requiring intervention. Methods: PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE and Web of Science databases were searched for appropriate studies. The primary outcome of interest was hospital mortality, the secondary outcomes were the incidence of complications during the hospitalization, including new-onset organ failure, gastrointestinal fistula or perforation, bleeding and length of hospital or intensive care unit (ICU) stay. Results: Seven clinical studies were included with a total of 742 patients with IPN requiring intervention, of whom 321 received early intervention and 421 delayed intervention. Results from the meta-analysis showed that early minimally invasive intervention did not increase hospital mortality (odds ratio 1.65, 95% confidence interval 0.97–2.81; p = 0.06) but was associated with a remarkably prolonged hospital stay and an increased incidence of gastrointestinal fistula or perforation when compared with delayed intervention. Conclusions: Although no firm conclusion can be drawn because of the quality of available studies, it does appear that timing of intervention is a risk factor for adverse outcomes and ought to be investigated more rigorously in prospective studies. Introduction: The association between early resuscitation volume and clinical outcomes remains controversial in acute pancreatitis. In the present study, we aimed to identify the association between resuscitation volume and the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) and other clinical outcome metrics.Methods: Patients admitted to our center with moderately severe acute pancreatitis (MSAP) and severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) from January 2009 to December 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were stratified into two groups on the basis of the volume of fluid infused during the first 24 h. The primary clinical endpoint was incidence of AKI. Moreover, AKI lasting time, utilization of continuous renal replacement therapy and lasting time, creatinine increase, and other clinical metrics were also compared. The potential risk factors of new-onset AKI were also analyzed.Results: A total of 179 patients were included, and aggressive fluid resuscitation (≥ 4 l) was associated with increased incidence of AKI compared with nonaggressive group (53.12% vs. 25.64%, p = 0.008), longer AKI lasting time (p = 0.038), and increased creatinine increase (p < 0.001) during hospitalization. Moreover, utilization of continuous renal replacement therapy was more frequent in aggressive group (40.63% vs. 24.36%, p = 0.108), and the lasting time of continuous renal replacement therapy was also longer (p = 0.181), though both not statistically different. Moreover, in multivariate analysis, aggressive resuscitation [OR 4.36 (1.52-13.62); p = 0.001] and chloride exposure [OR 2.53 (1.26-5.21); p = 0.012] in the first 24 h were risk factors of new-onset AKI.Conclusion: In patients with MSAP and SAP, aggressive fluid resuscitation was associated with increased incidence and longer duration of AKI. Background: Step-up approach consisting of multiple minimally invasive techniques has gradually become the mainstream for managing infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN). In the present study, we aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of a novel four-step approach and the conventional approach in managing IPN.Methods: According to the treatment strategy, consecutive patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were put into two time intervals to conduct a before-and-after comparison: the conventional group (2010-2011) and the novel four-step group (2012-2013). The conventional group was essentially open necrosectomy for any patient who failed percutaneous drainage of infected necrosis. And the novel drainage approach consisted of four different steps including percutaneous drainage, negative pressure irrigation, endoscopic necrosectomy and open necrosectomy in sequence. The primary endpoint was major complications (new-onset organ failure, sepsis or local complications, etc.). Secondary endpoints included mortality during hospitalization, need of emergency surgery, duration of organ failure and sepsis, etc.Results: Of the 229 recruited patients, 92 were treated with the conventional approach and the remaining 137 were managed with the novel four-step approach. New-onset major complications occurred in 72 patients (78.3%) in the two-step group and 75 patients (54.7%) in the four-step group (p < 0.001). For other important endpoints, although there was no statistical difference in mortality between the two groups (p = 0.403), significantly fewer patients in the four-step group required emergency surgery when compared with the conventional group [14.6% (20/137) vs. 45.6% (42/92), p < 0.001]. In addition, stratified analysis revealed that the four-step approach group presented significantly lower incidence of new-onset organ failure and other major complications in patients with the most severe type of AP.Conclusion: Comparing with the conventional approach, the novel four-step approach significantly reduced the rate of new-onset major complications and requirement of emergency operations in treating IPN, especially in those with the most severe type of acute pancreatitis. Background: Infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) are major complications of acute pancreatitis which determine disease severity and outcome. Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the value of admission heart rate variability as a marker of IPN or MODS in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) patients. Methods: Forty-one SAP patients within 72 h of symptoms onset were included in this prospective observational study. General demographics, laboratory data and the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II scores were recorded at admission. 5-minute ECG signals were obtained at the same time for heart rate variability analyses to assess SAP severity. Results: The baseline heart rate variability measurements, levels of low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) were significantly lower whereas high frequency norm (nHF) levels were significantly higher in patients who present with IPN and MODS or died ( P < 0.01). Low frequency (LF) levels were lower in patients who present with IPN or MODS as compared to patients without these complications. Levels of low frequency norm (nLF) were lower in MODS and non-survival patients. nHF and LF/HF were good predictors of IPN and MODS, superior to procalcitonin. nHF and LF/HF were better than APACHE II in predicting IPN and LF/HF showed superiority over APACHE II in the prediction of MODS. Objective: To evaluate the association between induced abortion (IA) and breast cancer risk among Chinese females. Methods: We searched three English databases (PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Wiley) and three Chinese databases ( CNKI, WanFang, and VIP) for studies up to December 2012, supplemented by manual searches. Two reviewers independently conducted the literature searching, study selection, and data extraction and quality assessment of included studies. Random effects models were used to estimate the summary odds ratios (ORs) and the 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 36 articles (two cohort studies and 34 case-control studies) covering 14 provinces in China were included in this review. Compared to people without any history of IA, an increased risk of breast cancer was observed among females who had at least one IA (OR = 1.44, 95 % CI 1.29-1.59, I = 82.6 %, p < 0.001, n = 34). No significant publication bias was found among the included studies (Egger test, p = 0.176). The risk increased to 1.76 (95 % CI 1.39-2.22) and 1.89 (95 % CI 1.40-2.55) for people who had at least two IAs and at least three IAs, respectively. Subgroup analyses showed similar results to the primary results. Meta-regression analysis of the included studies found that the association between IA and breast cancer risk attenuated with increasing percent of IA in the control group ( β = −0.022, p < 0.001). Conclusion: IA is significantly associated with an increased risk of breast cancer among Chinese females, and the risk of breast cancer increases as the number of IA increases. Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is an attractive and promising therapeutic application for intestinal disorders. The current study examined its influence on proliferation and restoration after ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rat small intestine. Six groups were performed: sham operation (Con); ischemia for 30 min with subsequent reperfusion for 30 min (I/R); I/R injured with 500 μg/kg EGF injected 5 min before ischemia (Pre-l); I/R injured with 50 μg/kg EGF injected 5 min before ischemia (Pre-s); I/R injured with 500 μg/kg EGF injected 5 min after reperfusion (Post-l); and I/R injured with 50 μg/kg EGF injected 5 min after reperfusion (Post-s). Intestinal histological damage, crypt cell proliferation degree, mucosal permeability, tight junction proteins expression, and levels of inflammation factors were studied for each group. Compared with the I/R group, administration of EGF in the Pre-l, Pre-s, and Post-l groups all presented a significant proliferation effect. The levels of FD4, IL-6, and TNF-α were dramatically decreased in all EGF-treated groups. Histological destruction was improved and TJs recovery was notably accelerated in all EGF-treated groups except the Post-s group. d-lactate concentration was only diminished in the Pre-l group. These results suggest that mucosally applied EGF can promote intestinal proliferation and improve restoration after I/R injury. Aim: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and potential risk of psychiatric side effects of varenicline for smoking cessation compared with placebo or nicotine replacement therapy. Subject and methods: Systematic search of electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register, SCI) up to March 2011. Two reviewers independently determined the eligibility of randomized controlled trials comparing varenicline with placebo, or nicotine replacement therapy with follow-up of at least 12 months. Information was independently extracted by 2 reviewers. Results: Ten trials involving 6,375 smokers were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled risk ratios (RR) for continuous abstinence was 2.83 (95% CI: 2.20-3.63) at 52 weeks for varenicline (1 mg, twice per day) versus placebo. Varenicline seemed to be more effective in smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (RR, 3.33) than smokers with cardiovascular diseases (RR, 2.64) or health smokers (RR, 2.52), non-Asian smokers than Asian smokers (2.98 vs. 1.94), elder smokers than younger smokers (2.87 vs. 2.52), female smokers than male smokers (2.98 vs. 1.94). The five predominant reported adverse events for varenicline compared to placebo were vomiting, nausea, abnormal dreams, constipation, and dysgeusia. There was no sufficient evidence that varenicline was associated with an increased risk of psychiatric side effects (RR, 1.45, 95% CI: 0.90-2.32). Conclusion: Varenicline therapy compared with placebo is associated with a favorable effect on smoking cessation at the end of 52 weeks. However, the psychiatric adverse events related with varenicline should be further studied with larger qualified study. Objective: Acute pancreatitis during pregnancy is a rare and dangerous disease. This study attempts to present a comprehensive analysis of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) during pregnancy and to identify the factors associated with poor outcomes.Methods: This study was a retrospective review of the medical records of SAP patients during pregnancy consecutively admitted into the Research Institute of General Surgery from 1999 to 2010.Results: Information was collected on presentation, management, and outcome. Eighteen patients were identified to have been diagnosed with SAP during pregnancy. Eleven patients (61.1%) were nulliparous; most attacks (88.9%) occurred during the third trimester. There were seven cases with preterm labor, six with fetal losses, and no maternal death. The etiology was biliary disease in seven patients (38.9%), hypertriglyceridemia in five patients (27.8%), both biliary and hypertriglyceridemia in four patients (22.2%), and idiopathic in two patients (11.1%). Patients with failure in more than one (≥2) organ were more likely to result in fetal loss (OR = 25, P = 0.016).Conclusions: SAP during pregnancy is predominantly biliary in etiology, but a significant proportion is caused by hypertriglyceridemia. The aim of this prospective, double-blinded pilot trial study was to evaluate the effects of Thymosin alpha 1 use in the early phase on immunomodulation and clinical outcomes in patients with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). A total of 24 patients with SAP were randomized to receive either conventional therapy for SAP or immunomodulatory therapy (TA1 group). The patients in the thymosin group were injected with Talpha1 3.2 mg twice per day for 7 days. The serum level of HLA-DR and CD4/CD8 ratio and other immune parameters were measured on admission, the 8th day and the 28th day. There was a low expression of monocyte HLA-DR in both groups on admission, and more rapid alterations in the HLA-DR were found in the TA1 group. The positive rates of blood and abdominal drainage culture were statistically significant during the 28th follow-up period. The duration of ICU stay was shorter after TA1 treatment. Quantification of right ventricular (RV) volume and function remains a challenge because of RV complex geometry by conventional echocardiography. The purpose of this study was to assess RV global longitudinal function in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) by 2-dimensional ultrasound speckle tracking imaging (STI). Thirty-eight patients with TOF were enrolled in this study and divided into child group ( n=25) and adult group ( n=13) according to age. Thirty-eight age- and sex-matched normal subjects were selected as control groups including child control group ( n=25) and adult control group ( n=13). RV global longitudinal peak systolic strain (GLS), strain rate (GLSRs), early diastolic strain rate (GLSRe) and late diastolic strain rate (GLSRa) were measured in all subjects by STI from the apical 4-chamber view and compared between groups. Furthermore, the main factors affecting the RV global longitudinal functional parameters were assessed. Compared with those in controls, RV GLS, GLSRs and GLSRe were significantly reduced in patients with TOF ( P<0.05 for all). RV GLSRs was significantly decreased in adult patients with TOF as compared with that in child patients ( P<0.05). There was no significant difference in RV GLS, GLSRe and GLSRa between child and adult TOF groups ( P>0.05). The diameter of right ventricle, main pulmonary artery and ventricular septum defect had correlations with RV GLSRs ( r 1=−0.490, r 2=0.580, r 3=−0.528, respectively, P<0.05 for all). Tricuspid annular plane peak systolic velocity (Sm) was the independent predictor of RV global strain and strain rate (β1=0.355, P1=0.031, β2=0.307, P2=0.021). Summary: Low/reduced bone mineral density (BMD) is an important predictor of childhood fracture. In this article, we presented the prevalence of BMD in Chinese adolescents and, for the first time, demonstrated the gender disparities in the impact of height on BMD. Purpose: To analyze the gender disparities in the association of low/reduced BMD with height in Chinese adolescents at the stage of growth spurt. Methods: A total of 8152 adolescents aged 12–14 years old were included based on a cross-sectional study in Tianjin, China. Height and weight were measured with standard equipment. BMD was measured using the method of quantitative ultrasound. Adolescents with Z ≤ − 2.0 or − 2.0 < Z ≤ − 1.0 were defined as "low BMD" or "reduced BMD". Results: The total low/reduced BMD rate was 22.0% in Chinese adolescents aged 12–14 years old, and boys were more likely to have low/reduced BMD than girls (30.1% vs. 12.9%, P < 0.001). The rate of low/reduced BMD significantly increased with age in boys (Ptrend = 0.019), whereas decreased with age in girls (Ptrend = 0.018). We found significant interaction effect between gender and height standard deviation score (height-Z) in the association with low/reduced BMD (Pinteraction < 0.001). There was a positive association of height-Z among boys (OR = 1.30, 95%CI 1.21–1.39, P < 0.001), meanwhile low/reduced BMD was inversely associated with height-Z among girls (OR = 0.85, 95%CI 0.78–0.94, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study suggested strong gender disparities in the impact of height on BMD in Chinese adolescents aged 12-14 years old, where the association between low/reduced BMD and height was positive among boys but inverse among girls. Abdominal bleeding is a lethal complication in acute pancreatitis (AP) and it is commonly described as a late event. However, spontaneous intra-abdominal bleeding could occur very early but no study focusing on this phenomenon was published yet. In this study, 1137 AP patients were retrospectively screened and 24 subjects suffering early spontaneous bleeding (ESB) were selected. Meanwhile, a 1:1 well-balanced cohort of non-bleeding patients was generated by propensity score match. The clinical characteristics of these patients were compared and a multiple regression analysis was performed to assess the risk factors for ESB. Besides, patients with massive post-intervention bleeding (PIB) were collected for additional comparison. ESB patients suffered significantly worse outcome than the matched cohort evidenced by dramatically higher mortality than the non-bleeding patients and even the PIB group (54.2% versus 20.8%, P = 0.017; 54.2% versus 31.0%, P = 0.049). The regression analysis demonstrated computer tomography severity index (CTSI; OR, 3.34; 95% CI, 1.995-5.59, P < 0.001) and creatinine (OR, 1.008; 95% CI, 1.004-1.012, P < 0.001) were associated with the occurrence of ESB. In conclusion, ESB is a rare but dangerous complication of moderate-to-severe AP and may result in high mortality. CTSI and creatinine are independent risk factors for the development of ESB. We investigated the association of physical activity, TV watching time, sleeping time with the risks of obesity and hyperglycemia among 1263 offspring aged 1-5 years of mothers with gestational diabetes (GDM) in a cross-sectional study. Logistic regression models were used to obtain the odd ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of childhood obesity and hyperglycemia associated with different levels of indoor activity, outdoor activity, TV watching, and sleeping time. The multivariable-adjusted ORs of obesity based on different levels of TV watching time (0, <1.0, and ≥1.0 hour/day) were 1.00, 1.21 (95% CI 0.72-2.05), and 2.20 (95% CI 1.33-3.63) (Ptrend = 0.003), respectively. The multivariable-adjusted ORs of hyperglycemia based on different levels of indoor activity (<5.0, 5.0-6.9, and ≥7.0 hours/day) were 1.00, 0.74 (95% CI 0.45-1.21), and 0.49 (95% CI 0.28-0.84) (Ptrend = 0.034), respectively. The multivariable-adjusted ORs of hyperglycemia associated with different levels of sleeping time (<11.0, 11.0-11.9, and ≥12.0 hours/day) were 1.00, 0.67 (95% CI 0.42-1.05), and 0.39 (95% CI 0.23-0.67) (Ptrend = 0.003), respectively. The morbidity rate of hypertriglyceridemic acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP) increased rapidly over the last decade. However an appropriate animal model was lacking to recapitulate this complicated human disease. We established a novel mice model of HTG-AP by poloxamer 407 (P-407) combined with caerulein (Cae). In our study, serum triglyceride levels of P-407 induced mice were elevated in a dose-dependent manner, and the pancreatic and pulmonary injuries were much severer in HTG mice than normal mice when injected with conventional dose Cae (50 ug/kg), what's more, the severity of AP was positively correlative with duration and extent of HTG. In addition, we found that a low dose Cae (5 ug/kg) could induce pancreatic injury in HTG mice while there was no obvious pathological injury in normal mice. Finally, we observed that HTG leaded to the increased infiltrations of macrophages and neutrophils in mice pancreatic tissues. In conclusion, we have developed a novel animal model of HTG-AP that can mimic physiological, histological, clinical features of human HTG-AP and it could promote the development of therapeutic strategies and advance the mechanism research on HTG-AP. Growing evidence suggests acute skeletal muscle wasting is a key factor affecting nutritional support and prognosis in critical patients. Previously, plenty of studies of muscle wasting focused on the peripheral pathway, little was known about the central role. We tested the hypothesis whether central inflammatory pathway and neuropeptides were involved in the process. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treated rats, hypothalamic NF-κB pathway and inflammation were highly activated, which was accompanied with severe muscle wasting. Central inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway activation by infusion of an inhibitor (PS1145) can efficiently reduce muscle wasting as well as attenuate hypothalamic neuropeptides alteration. Furthermore, knockdown the expression of anorexigenic neuropeptide proopiomelanocortin (POMC) expression with a lentiviral vector containing shRNA can significantly alleviate LPS-induced muscle wasting, whereas hypothalamic inflammation or NF-κB pathway was barely affected. Taken together, these results suggest activation of hypothalamic POMC is pivotal for acute muscle wasting caused by endotoxemia. Neuropeptide POMC expression may have mediated the contribution of hypothalamic inflammation to peripheral muscle wasting. Pharmaceuticals with the ability of inhibiting hypothalamic NF-κB pathway or POMC activation may have a therapeutic potential for acute muscle wasting and nutritional therapy in septic patients.
