Materials with low stacking fault energies have been long sought for their many desirable mechanical attributes. Although there have been many successful reports of low stacking fault alloys (for example Cu-based and Mg-based), many have lacked sufficient strength to be relevant for structural applications. The recent discovery and development of multicomponent equiatomic alloys (or high-entropy alloys) that form as simple solid solutions on ideal lattices has opened the door to investigate changes in stacking fault energy in materials that naturally exhibit high mechanical strength. We report in this article our efforts to determine the stacking fault energies of two- to five-component alloys. A range of methods that include ball milling, arc melting, and casting, is used to synthesize the alloys. The resulting structure of the alloys is determined from x-ray diffraction measurements. First-principles electronic structure calculations are employed to determine elastic constants, lattice parameters, and Poisson’s ratios for the same alloys. These values are then used in conjunction with x-ray diffraction measurements to quantify stacking fault energies as a function of the number of components in the equiatomic alloys. We show that the stacking fault energies decrease with the number of components. Nonequiatomic alloys are also explored as a means to further reduce stacking fault energy. Copper alloys with different amounts of zinc were synthesized via high energy ball milling at liquid nitrogen and room temperature. Bulk samples were produced in situ by controlling the milling temperature. It is shown that temperature plays an important role in formation of artifact-free consolidated samples via its effect on defect formation and annihilation during the milling process. The mechanical behavior of Cu-Zn nanocrystalline alloys was examined using Vickers microhardness and tensile tests. The nanostructure of the alloys was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hardness results of processed alloys vary as a function of the alloying elements. Considering typical low ductility of nanocrystalline materials, the improved ductility with the high strength observed in these alloys suggests that they are artifact-free and may have several deformation mechanisms, which may include dislocation activity and nano-twinning. The authors present new experimental data for shear punch tests and tensile tests using four different materials. The correlation between shear punch and tensile yield stresses must be established empirically, and the procedure for doing this is discussed, The elastic-plastic deformation in a shear punch test develops gradually with increasing punch displacement and is often assumed to be simple shear. This is examined using finite element analysis to simulate the development of plasticity during the early stages of punch displacement.
