Forest ecosystems are one of the largest terrestrial carbon (C) reservoirs on Earth and an important sink of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Abiotic and biotic disturbances such as windfalls, fires, outbreaks of insects or pests may negatively affect C storage in forest ecosystems decreasing their role as CO2 sink. The objective of this review was to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of large-scale forest ecosystem disturbances caused by windthrow and insect outbreaks on soil C stocks and cycles, and to gather information on the impact of restoration treatments performed in disturbed stands in the context of carbon accumulation in forest soils. Discussed were effects of windstorms and insect outbreaks as well as impacts of various approaches of forest regeneration after disturbance on C stocks and fluxes. Disturbances decrease C stocks in forest ecosystems and turn them from C sink into C source for a certain time. Regeneration of the disturbed forest restores its role as a CO2 sink. In montane forests artificial afforestation seems to shorten the time of achieving C parity. However, no data exists for lowland forests. Hence, there is an urgent need for studies that assess effect of windfalls and insect outbreaks on carbon storage in forests of lowland Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural and human activities have deteriorated urban soil's health and ecological functions as compared to forest soils. Therefore, we hypothesized that any intervention in poor quality soil in urban area will change their chemical and water retention properties. The experiment was conducted in Krakow (Poland) in completely randomized design (CRD). The soil amendments used in this experiment consisted of control, spent coffee grounds (SCGs), salt, and sand (1 and 2 t ha−1) in order to evaluate the impact of these soil amendments on the urban soil chemical and hydrological properties. Soil samples were collected after 3 months of soil application. The soil pH, soil acidity (me/100 g), electrical conductivity (mS/cm), total carbon (%), CO2 emission (g m−2 day−1), and total nitrogen (%) were measured in laboratory condition. The soil hydrological properties like volumetric water content (VWC), water drop penetration time (WDPT), current water storage capacity (Sa), water storage capacity after 4 and 24 h (S4 and S24), and capillary water Pk (mm) were also determined. We noted variations in soil chemical and water retention properties in urban soil after the application of SCGs, sand, and salt. It was observed that SCGs (2 t ha−1) has reduced soil pH and nitrogen (%) by 14 and 9%, while the incorporation of salt resulted in maximum soil EC, total acidity, and soil pH. The soil carbon (%) and CO2 emission (g m−2 day−1) were enhanced and declined by SCGs amendment. Furthermore, the soil hydrological properties were significantly influenced by the soil amendment (spent coffee grounds, salt, and sand) application. Our results showed that spent coffee grounds mixing in urban soil has considerably enhanced the soil VWC, Sa, S4, S24, and Pk, whereas it decreased the water drop penetration time. The analysis showed that the single dose of soil amendments had not improved soil chemical properties very well. Therefore, it is suggested that SCGs should be applied more than single dose. This is a good direction to look for ways to improve the retention properties of urban soil and you can consider combining SCGs with other organic materials like compost, farmyard manure, or biochar. As poikilohydric organisms, lichens are capable of storing significant amounts of atmospheric water. Epiphytes that intercept rainfall change the amount and chemical composition of throughfall water, affecting water balance and microclimate of forest ecosystems. The aim of the study was to investigate the differences in the process of changes/increase in the amount of water in three lichen species: Evernia prunastrii, Hypogymnia tubulosa and Platismatia glauca. In the experiment, conducted under laboratory conditions, samples of thalli were wetted with constant doses of water and weighed in order to determine the amount of water storage capacity from simulated rainfall. The studied lichen species differed in terms of process dynamics and values of water storage capacity, probably due to the morphological structure of thalli. Average water retention was the highest in Platismatia glauca (33.58 %), lower in Evernia prunastrii (19.77 %) and the lowest in Hypogymnia tubulosa (15.38 %). Analyzed taxa with larger water storage capacity are also known to be more sensitive to air pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The aim of the study was to present variability of content and quality of soil organic matter on the landslide surface. Attempts were made to demonstrate the progress of the process of soil cover restoration 7 years after the landslides and biochemical activity of soil associated with the restoration of soil cover.Materials and methods: The landslide area was located in southern Poland, in the Sucha Forest District. The soil properties were studied on a regular grid of points, which covered the entire area of the landslide. In soil samples, particle size, soil aggregates content, pH, total carbon and nitrogen content, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen and the activity of dehydrogenases were determined. Additionally, the fractions of soil organic matter were used in the study as an indicator of soil quality due to the many important interactions of these components in the soil system.Results and discussion: This study identified the landslide area as characterised by a stronger diversification of physical, chemical, and biological properties. The upper part of the landslide (in the area referred to as the landslide niche) is strongly eroded and characterised by the least advanced soil cover recovery. Additionally, low soil organic matter content was observed in the upper part of the landslide, which restricted biological activity of the studied soils. Soil microbial biomass carbon increased with restoration of landslide soils.Conclusions: The soil organic matter plays a key role for the initial stage of soil formation on a landslide. The amount of soil organic matter on the studied landslide had a positive effect on the microbial biomasses C and N, dehydrogenases activity. The aim of the study was to determine the degree of soil pollution in different forest types around Krakow, using biochemical, chemical and magnetic methods. In assessing the degree of soil contamination, the impact of the forest species composition by comparing the surfaces of broadleaf and coniferous forest stands was taken into account. Enzymatic activity was related to other measures of pollution, i.e., heavy metal concentration, content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and level of magnetic susceptibility. The study was conducted in southern Poland. Krakow was the central point around which the test surfaces were designated. In soil samples pH, soil texture and organic carbon, nitrogen, base cation contents, dehydrogenase and urease activities were determined. Additionally, heavy metal concentration, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) content and magnetic susceptibility were recorded. The obtained results confirm the high diversity of forest soil pollution around Krakow agglomeration. Significant differences in both the content of heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and values of the magnetic susceptibility were observed in the soils of forest complexes located in different directions away from Krakow and at various distances from Krakow. The level of contamination is related to the historical and current deposition of industrial and urban dusts from Krakow and Silesia. The type of stand had a considerable influence on the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. A higher content of aromatic hydrocarbons was observed in the soils of deciduous stands. A high level of magnetic susceptibility was observed in the soils of coniferous stands. The differences in enzymatic activity between the research plots result from different contents of PAHs and different amount of soil organic matter resulting from the species composition. Forestry works using chainsaws result in up to 7 million liters of various mineral oils being soaked annually into forest soils. These substances, containing a complex mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are highly toxic. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of oil contamination with PAHs on the physical and biological properties of forest soils. The study area was located in southern Poland in the Miechów forest district. The experiment was conducted on four treatment blocks with various amounts of oil addition. The study included the determination of PAH content, dehydrogenase and urease activity, and biomass of earthworms. Physical properties were determined using the dryer method and Kopecky rings of 250 cm volume. The results obtained confirmed the hypothesis that oil contamination with PAHs modified the physical properties of forest soils and oil had a negative impact on enzyme activity in soil. Enzyme activity in the studied soils was negatively correlated with PAH content. Earthworm population density reflected the contamination level of oil-contaminated soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
