This study investigated the complex interplay among circadian rhythms, redox balance, and retrograde signaling in plants, focusing on the role of nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 1 (NPR1). Using transgenic tobacco expressing the NPR1-GFP, we observed circadian oscillations and nuclear accumulation during night and continuous night conditions, suggesting a link between circadian signals and environmental responses of NPR1. We found that NPR1 nuclear localization is influenced by light conditions and the levels of NADPH and NADP+, affecting its translocation from the chloroplasts to the nucleus and thereby indicating the circadian gene expression. Our findings on the upregulation of nuclear import components under dark conditions and in NPR1-overexpressing plants shed light on nuclear import processes, indicating the significance of importin proteins in protein translocation. This study enhances our understanding of how plants integrate circadian and redox signals to regulate environmental responses, providing insights into potential strategies for boosting plant resilience via the modulation of the NPR1 pathway. Background: Data from mechanistic studies suggest flavonoids may benefit glucose metabolism, but their associations with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain unclear. This study examined the prospective associations of dietary intake of total, classes, and individual flavonoids, as well as their source foods, with T2D in the CArdioVascular disease Association Study (CAVAS). Methods: A total of 16,666 Korean men and women were enrolled at baseline, and 953 were newly diagnosed with T2D over a median follow-up of 5.96 years. Intake of flavonoids was cumulatively averaged using all food frequency questionnaires before the censoring events. A Poisson regression model was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Women with higher total flavonoid, flavonol, isoflavone, and proanthocyanidin intake had a lower risk of T2D (fourth vs. first quartile, IRR 0.62; 95% CI 0.44–0.89; P for linearity and non-linearity < 0.05 for total flavonoids), while in men, flavanones, anthocyanins, and proanthocyanidins, but not total flavonoids, were inversely associated with T2D risk (all P interaction for sex > 0.05). The key source foods contributing to flavonoid intake were also different between men and women, except for apples: tangerines and strawberries in men and green leafy vegetables and soy products in women. Conclusions: A higher intake of total flavonoids, particularly from vegetables, soybeans, and apples, may be associated with lower risk of T2D in women. However, flavonoids from fruits, rather than total flavonoids, may be inversely associated in men. Our study aimed to conduct a comparative evaluation of various noninvasive tests (NITs) for risk stratification in at-risk population for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), focusing on cardiovascular and liver-related mortality. A total of 21,715 adults aged 40 years and older were enrolled at baseline. The mean follow-up period was 12.39 years. Three types of NITs (fibrosis-4 index [FIB-4], NAFLD fibrosis score [NFS], and steatosis-associated fibrosis estimator [SAFE] score) were used. When using the low cut-off as a 'rule-out' strategy, there were no significant differences in cardiovascular mortality between the 'rule-out' (low-risk) group and the 'rule-in' (intermediate- or high-risk) group based on FIB-4 (aHR = 1.029, P = 0.845) or NFS (aHR = 0.839, P = 0.271) classification. However, the SAFE score exhibited higher sensitivity in predicting cardiovascular mortality compared to FIB-4 or NFS (73.3% in SAFE score vs. 29.6% in FIB-4 or 21.3% in NFS). Only the SAFE score could effectively differentiate the risk between low- and intermediate- or high-risk groups for all types of mortality (all P values for aHR < 0.001). In the present work, the thermal properties and heat treatment effect of an ingot metallurgy hypereutectic Al–Mg–Si alloy with extra Si are studied. The alloy is produced by gravity casting using 99.8% pure Al, 98.5% Si, and 99.9% pure Mg pellets. Thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, specific heat, and thermal expansion analyses are performed both after solid solution and after various aging treatments. The heat flow curve reveals a correlation between the precipitation reactions and the thermal diffusivity behaviors. In particular, the thermal characteristics of the Al–Mg–Si alloy are determined by the precipitation of the β″ and β′ phases, and the precipitation and re-dissolving of Si. Interestingly, the effect of Si precipitation upon the thermal diffusivity and expansion is greater than that of meta-stable β-phase precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Omega-3 fatty acids have many health benefits as they help to prevent and treat coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. Omega-3 fatty acids miscible in lecithin were found to spontaneously form microemulsions in water. The particle sizes of emulsions ranged from 300 to 800 nm and their morphologies were observed by optical microscopy. In vitro testing showed that the amounts of omega-3 fatty acids released by self-emulsifying delivery (SED) formulations containing lecithin, were higher than that released by a commercial formulation without lecithin. The Cmax values of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were approximately 1.38–1.40-fold for the optimized SED formulation than for the control group (P < 0.01). Similarly, the mean AUC0 − 48 values of DHA or EPA in the SED group were 1.27–1.29-fold higher than in the control group (P < 0.05). The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of H13 laser cladding layer on mechanical, thermal, and corrosion characteristic of C45 carbon steel using a laser flash analysis and potentiodynamic polarization technique. H13 powder was built up layer by laser-assisted metal deposition equipment. The thermal conductivity of the C45-H13 specimen was improved by about 25% compared to that of H13. In potentiodynamic polarization test, C45-H13 specimens were noble than H13 and C45 which had the lowest Ecorr to − 420 mV. Hence, the C45 displayed the lowest icorr to 1.33 × 10–6 A cm−2, and for C45-H13 it was 1.94 × 10–6 A cm−2. It was found that the corrosion resistance of the laser-cladded H13 layer was lower than that of C45 but improved compared to the H13 plate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate cartilage quality after internal fixation of osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT) using second-look arthroscopies and MRIs. Thirty-four patients underwent internal fixation of OLTs involving large bone fragments. Twenty-one of these patients underwent second-look arthroscopies and 23 patients underwent MRIs postoperatively. The arthroscopic findings were assessed using the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grading system, and the MRI findings were evaluated using the Magnetic Resonance Observation of Cartilage Repair Tissue (MOCART) score. Five of the patients who underwent second-look arthroscopies showed normal cartilage, 12 showed nearly normal cartilage, 3 showed abnormal cartilage, and 1 showed severely abnormal cartilage, according to the overall ICRS repair grades. All the patients who achieved bone fragment union showed normal, or nearly normal cartilage upon second-look arthroscopy. The ICRS and MOCART scores were significantly higher for the patients with bone fragment union compared to those with nonunion (ICRS scores: 10.3 ± 1.5 vs. 6.0 ± 2.0, p < 0.001, MOCART score: 88.3 ± 10.0 vs. 39.0 ± 20.4, p < 0.001). Low signal intensities of the bone fragments on preoperative T1-weighted MRIs were not associated with nonunion (Fisher's exact test, p = 0.55), and the signal intensities increased postoperatively to levels similar to the underlying talus when bone union was achieved. Second-look arthroscopy and MRI showed normal, or nearly normal, cartilage after internal fixation of OLTs when bone union was achieved. Purpose: The psychosocial health of mother is crucial for healthy prenatal period and early childhood. We investigated the prevalence and risk factors of maternal depression during pregnancy and postpartum among women who participated in a home visitation program in Seoul, South Korea (Seoul Healthy First Step Project, SHFSP). Methods: We analyzed 80,116 women who participated in the SHFSP, which was launched by Seoul metropolitan government in 2013, and defined peripartum depression as a score ≥ 10 on the Korean version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Sociodemographic factors and psychosocial health status were evaluated through a standardized questionnaire completed by participants upon program registration. We calculated the prevalence of women at risk for peripartum depression and evaluated associated factors by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Results: Prevalence of women at risk for peripartum depression was 17.7% (prepartum depression: 14.2%, postpartum depression: 24.3%). Younger maternal age, low income (OR 2.40, 95% CI 2.03–2.84), disability (2.61, 1.96–3.47), single parenthood (3.27, 2.69–3.99), and smoking (2.02, 1.44–2.83) increased the peripartum depression risk. Furthermore, experience of stress, change, or loss over the past 12 months (3.36, 3.22–3.50), history of treatment for emotional issues (2.47, 2.27–2.70), experience of child abuse (1.91, 1.74–2.11), and domestic violence (2.25, 1.81–2.80) increased the risk for peripartum depression, whereas having helpers for the baby (0.62, 0.58–0.67), having someone to talk with (0.31, 0.27–0.35), and considering oneself confident (0.30, 0.29–0.31) decreased the risk. Purpose: Maintaining optimal blood pressure (BP) levels can be an effective preventive strategy for reducing disease burden. Nut consumption may play a preventive role against hypertension, which is a lifelong condition. We aimed to prospectively examine the association between cumulative average nut consumption and the incidence of hypertension in Korean adults aged 40 years and older. Methods: A total of 10,347 participants who were free of hypertension at baseline, were included. Hypertension was defined as having a physician diagnosis and taking antihypertensive medications or having abnormal BP (systolic ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic ≥ 90 mmHg). As an exposure, cumulative average nut consumption was calculated using repeated food-frequency questionnaires (mean: 2.1). We used a modified Poisson regression model with a robust error estimator to estimate the incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for hypertension. Results: We identified 2047 incident cases of hypertension during 44,614 person-years of follow-up. Among both men and women, an average nut consumption of ≥ 1 serving/week (15 g/week]) was inversely associated with hypertension incidence (IRR = 0.74, 95% CI = 0.58–0.96, p for trend = 0.013 for men; IRR = 0.72, 95% CI = 0.59–0.88, p for trend = 0.002 for women) and these significant associations were consistently observed across the strata of potential confounders. Conclusion: An average consumption of at least one serving (15 g) per week of peanuts, almonds, and/or pine nuts may be inversely associated with the risk of hypertension among Korean adults aged 40 years and older, in a dose–response manner. The objective of this study is to increase the thermal diffusivity of Al–Si–Mg alloys by heat treatment and demonstrate the effect of the eutectic phase distribution on thermal conductivity of Al–Mg–Si alloys. Two types of Al–Si–Mg (Al–0.2Si–0.4Mg and Al–6.5Si–0.4Mg) alloys used in this study were prepared through atmospheric gravity casting. Solid solution treatment was performed at 535 °C for 4–10 h and then quenched in warm water of 80 °C temperature. Artificial aging of specimens was performed at 180 °C for 5 h. After aging treatment, the changes of microstructures due to heat treatment were examined by using optical microscopy. Differential scanning calorimeter analyzed phase transform during the heat treatment. Variations of thermal diffusivity according to the microstructures were investigated by using a laser flash apparatus. Precipitation of Mg2Si and Si phases increased the thermal diffusivity after aging treatment. Moreover, thermal diffusivity of the Al–6.5Si–0.4Mg alloys also increased with increasing solid solution treatment time due to spheroidization of eutectic Si. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The discovery of effective therapeutic agents against neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) remains challenging. Neurotoxicity, inflammations, and oxidative stress are associating factors of NDDs. Sodium butyrate (NaB) is a short-chain fatty acid found in diet and produced in the gut that reportedly protects cancer, inflammation, obesity and so on. Previously, SH-SY5Y cells were studied as in vitro models of cerebral diseases. We have investigated the neuroprotective effects of NaB in SH-SY5Y cells stimulated with TNF-α. The expression of inflammatory mediators, including iNOS, COX-2, and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) and the apoptotic regulators, including P-53, Bcl-2 associated X (BAX) Protein, and caspase-3 were analyzed by western blot analysis. The anti-apoptotic gene Bcl-2 and the pro-apoptotic gene BAX translocation were also investigated. Our results showed that NaB attenuated cell death and inhibited the NO production and decreased the expression of iNOS and COX-2 in TNF-α-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. NaB notably ameliorated apoptotic regulatory proteins p-53, Caspase-3 and caspase-1 level, and reversed phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinases and p-38 proteins. NaB ameliorated Glucocorticoid receptor and NLRP3 inflammasome expressions. NaB also suppressed the BAX nuclear translocation and modulated Nrf-2, HO-1 and MnSOD expression in neuroblastoma cells. In addition, NaB substantially reversed the reactive oxygen species in H2O2 induced SH-SY5Y cells. Altogether, our results suggest that sodium butyrate has potential therapeutic effects against NDDs. The objective of this study was to investigate effects of morphology and precipitation on thermal properties of Al-9.8%Si-0.4%Mg-0.7%Cu (in mass%) alloys using a laser flash apparatus, differential scanning calorimetry, and a thermomechanical analyser. Results revealed that mean particle size and shape of Si depended on mould temperature. Specimens with higher mould temperature had long and needle-like eutectic Si. As-cast specimens were solid solution treated at 535 °C for 6 h and then quenched in warm water of 80 °C. As-solution specimens were then aged at 180 or 190 °C for 1, 5, and 10 h. After artificial ageing treatment, the long needle-like eutectic silicon phase was split into smaller particles. It then gradually became spherical. When the shape of Si phase became similar after artificial ageing treatment, thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity had similar values. Purpose: To investigate whether complement and other immune-related proteins in cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) can predict intra-amniotic infection and/or inflammation (IAI) and spontaneous preterm delivery (SPTD, < 34.0 weeks) in women with preterm labor (PTL) and to compare the predictive abilities of these biomarkers with that of amniotic fluid (AF) white blood cells (WBCs).Methods: We designed a retrospective cohort study of 145 women with PTL at 23.0-33.6 weeks who underwent amniocentesis. AF was cultured and assayed for WBC count and interleukin-6 (IL-6). CVF samples were obtained at the time of amniocentesis. CVF was assayed for complement C3a and C5a, IGFBP-1, and MMP-9 by ELISA.Results: In the multivariate analysis, elevated CVF levels of C5a and IGFBP-1 were significantly associated with IAI and SPTD at < 34 weeks, while those of C3a were associated with IAI, but not SPTD, even after adjusting for other baseline confounders. For C3a, C5a, and IGFBP-1 in the CVF, area under the curve (AUC) values were statistically similar to that of AF WBCs for detecting IAI, whereas these CVF biomarkers had similar or higher AUC values than AF WBCs for predicting SPTD at < 34 weeks. However, univariate analysis showed no significant correlation between high CVF MMP-9 and IAI or SPTD at < 34 weeks.Conclusions: In women with PTL, the CVF levels of C3a, C5a, and IGFBP-1 may be useful as novel non-invasive predictors of IAI and SPTD at < 34 weeks. We aimed to identify novel biomarkers in maternal plasma that predict spontaneous preterm delivery (SPTD) in women with preterm labor (PTL) using an antibody microarray and to develop the best prediction model for SPTD based on these biomarkers in combination with clinical and ultrasound factors. This retrospective cohort study included 215 women with singleton pregnancies and PTL (23–33 weeks) who gave plasma samples. In a nested case-control study design, plasma proteomes from SPTD (case subjects, n = 15) and term delivery (control subjects, n = 15) groups were differentially profiled using a membrane-based antibody microarray. Six candidate biomarkers of interest were validated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the total cohort (n = 215). Cervical lengths were also measured. The primary outcome measure was SPTD within 48 h after sampling. Twenty of the molecules studied displayed significant intergroup differences. Validation by ELISA confirmed significantly higher levels of plasma endostatin and lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) in women who had SPTD within 48 h than in those delivering after 48 h. However, plasma macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1α levels were significantly lower in women who delivered within 48 h. A combined model was developed to predict SPTD within 48 h using a stepwise regression procedure, which included plasma endostatin and LBP levels, nulliparity, and cervical length (area under the curve = 0.920). Plasma LBP, endostatin, and MIP-1α are potential new biomarkers for predicting imminent SPTD and a combined noninvasive model based on these biomarkers and clinical and ultrasound factors can accurately predict imminent SPTD in women with PTL. We aimed to identify cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) protein biomarkers of microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC) in women with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), using an antibody microarray. This retrospective cohort study included 99 consecutive women with singleton pregnancies and PPROM (23–33 weeks) who underwent amniocentesis and who gave CVF samples. CVF proteomes from the MIAC (n = 20) versus non-MIAC groups (n = 20) were comparatively profiled by an antibody microarray using a nested case-control study design. The seven candidate biomarkers of interest were validated in the total cohort (n = 99) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). For comparison with candidate markers, amniotic fluid (AF) white blood cell (WBC) count was also measured. The primary outcome measure was MIAC (defined as positive AF culture). Thirty of the proteins studied exhibited significant intergroup differences. A combined, non-invasive model was developed by using a stepwise regression procedure, which included CVF IL-8 and CVF MMP-9 (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.763), and this AUC was comparable with the AUC of AF WBC. Using protein–antibody microarray technology, we found several novel, independent, non-invasive biomarkers to identify MIAC in women with PPROM: IL-8, lipocalin-2, MIP-1α, MMP-9, and TIMP-1. We aimed to identify cervicovaginal fluid (CVF) biomarkers that can detect microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC) in women with preterm labor (PTL) with an antibody microarray and to develop the best combined model for detection of MIAC using these biomarkers in combination with conventional clinical variables. This retrospective cohort study included 168 singleton pregnant women with PTL (23–34 weeks) who underwent amniocentesis. AF was cultured, and CVF samples were obtained at the time of amniocentesis. An antibody microarray was used to analyze the CVF proteome (n = 40). The validation of four candidate biomarkers of interest was performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the final cohort (n = 168). For comparison with candidate markers, CVF IL-6 concentration was also measured. Twenty-seven molecules studied exhibited intergroup differences. Validation by ELISA confirmed significantly higher levels of CVF DKK3, M-CSF, and TIMP-1, but not of IGFBP-2, independent of gestational age, in CVF of women with MIAC. The area under the curve (AUC) of DKK3, M-CSF, and TIMP-1 from CVF was not significantly different from the AUC of IL-6 from CVF for detecting MIAC in women with PTL. By using a stepwise regression analysis, a combined detection model was developed, which included the CVF M-CSF, TIMP-1, and gestational age at sampling (AUC = 0.823). We aimed to identify maternal blood biomarkers predictive of histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) in the plasma of women with preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and to determine whether the combination of these biomarkers with conventional clinical variables can improve the prediction of HCA. This retrospective cohort study included 82 consecutive women with PPROM (23-34 gestational weeks) who delivered within 96 hours of blood sampling. A membrane-based human antibody microarray was used to analyze the plasma proteome. The validation of 5 candidate biomarkers of interest was performed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the final cohort (n = 82). Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at sampling. Seventy-nine molecules studied exhibited intergroup differences. Validation by ELISA confirmed higher levels of plasma matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), interleukin-6 (IL-6), S100 A8/A9, and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 1 (IGFBP-1), but not tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), in women with HCA than in women without HCA. Using a stepwise regression analysis, a combined prediction model was developed, which included the plasma MMP-9, serum CRP levels, and gestational age (area under the curve [AUC], 0.932). The AUC for this model was significantly greater than that for any single variable included in the predictive model. Protein–antibody microarray technology can be useful in identifying plasma-based predictors for HCA. This study suggests that plasma MMP-9, IL-6, IGFBP-1, and S100 A8/A9 are important noninvasive predictors for HCA in women with PPROM and that the best predictive model, which combined these biomarkers with conventional clinical factors, can significantly improve the predictability for HCA. Purpose: To determine whether various selected immune-related proteins in maternal plasma, alone or in combination, can predict histologic chorioamnionitis (HCA) in women with preterm labor, and to compare the predictive abilities of these biomarkers with that of serum C-reactive protein (CRP).Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 74 consecutive women with preterm labor (23-34 gestational weeks) who delivered within 96 h of blood sampling. Their serum CRP levels were also measured. The stored maternal plasma was assayed for interleukin (IL)-6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1, angiopoietin-2, S100 A8/A9, CXCL14, APRIL, and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-2 (IGFBP-2), using ELISA kits. The primary outcome measure was HCA.Results: HCA was detected in 59.4% (44/74) of women. Women with HCA had a significantly lower median gestational age at sampling and plasma IGFBP-2 level, and higher median plasma IL-6 and S100 A8/A9 levels than those without HCA. In multivariable analysis, high plasma IL-6 and low plasma IGFBP-2 levels were independently associated with the occurrence of HCA. However, the sensitivities, specificities, and areas under the curve of plasma IL-6, S100 A8/A9, and IGFBP-2, alone or in combination, were similar to or lower than those of serum CRP, for detecting HCA.Conclusions: Our data suggest that plasma IL-6, S100 A8/A9, and IGFBP-2 could be potential novel biomarkers for predicting HCA in women with PTL; however, elevated plasma levels of these biomarkers, alone or in combination, do not predict HCA better than serum CRP. This study was aimed to examine the association the blood/urinary concentration of toxic metal (Hg, Pb, and Cd) with children’s dietary patterns. This cross-sectional study included 1026 school children aged 8-17 years. Dietary patterns were defined using factor loading scores for 108 foods from a Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. A high blood Hg level was found in boys with a high score in the ‘fish’ pattern (p = 0.02), and in girls with a high score in ‘fruit’ pattern (p = 0.04). The concentration of Pb was related to the ‘imprudent’ pattern in high school boys (p = 0.02). The effect of the ‘vegetable’ pattern on high excretion of urinary Cd was observed in low grade elementary (p = 0.04) and middle school students (p < 0.0001), and the effect of the ‘fruit’ pattern on the urinary Cd was observed in high grade elementary school students (p = 0.02). Silicon is a base element used to cast aluminum alloys, and the properties of an Al-Si alloy can be controlled by adjusting the casting and heat treatment parameters. The influence was investigated that the silicon content of Al-Si alloys on the silicon precipitation rate. Silicon was added to pure commercial aluminum at 0.8, 1.5, 3.0, 6.5, and 9.5 mass%, and then, samples were produced through casting. The specimens were solid solution treatment for 10 h at 803 K and were analyzed using a thermomechanical apparatus and differential scanning calorimetry to determine the change of exothermic reaction and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) according to the silicon content in aluminum alloys. The heat flow curve showed an exothermic reaction resulting from silicon precipitation in the matrix, dissolving in the matrix during the solid solution treatment. The CTE curve also indicated silicon precipitation, and the peak value of the CTE reflected the change in temperature at which the silicon precipitation had occurred according the silicon content in the aluminum alloy. The rate of the silicon precipitation appeared to be proportional to the silicon content in the aluminum alloy since the silicon content induced changes in the microstructure of the aluminum alloy and thereby affecting the silicon precipitation kinetics. The mammalian renal collecting duct consists of principal cells (PCs) and intercalated cells (ICs). Both PCs and ICs are involved in potassium (K) homeostasis, PCs through their role in K secretion and ICs through their ability to facilitate K resorption. We previously hypothesized that PCs may differentiate into ICs upon K depletion. However, no direct evidence has yet been obtained to conclusively demonstrate that PCs differentiate into ICs in response to K depletion. Here, we present direct evidence for the differentiation of PCs into ICs by cell lineage tracing using aquaporin 2 (AQP2)-Cre mice and R26R-EYFP transgenic mice. In control mice, AQP2-EYFP cells exhibited mainly a PC phenotype (AQP2-positive/H-ATPase-negative). Interestingly, some AQP2-EYFP cells exhibited an IC phenotype (H-ATPase-positive/AQP2-negative); these cells accounted for 1.7 %. After K depletion, the proportion of AQP2-EYFP cells with an IC phenotype was increased to 4.1 %. Furthermore, some AQP2-EYFP cells exhibited a 'null cell' phenotype (AQP2-negative/H-ATPase-negative) after K depletion. Collectively, our data demonstrate that AQP2-labeled cells can differentiate into ICs, as well as null cells, in response to K depletion. This finding indicates that some of AQP2-labeled cells possess properties of progenitor cells and that they can differentiate into ICs in the adult mouse kidney. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maternal depression is a common health problem during the perinatal period. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in the relationship between socioeconomic position and maternal depressive symptoms from prenatal to 3 years postpartum in Korean women. Prospective cohort data were collected from the Panel Study on Korean Children between 2008 and 2011. Maternal depression was assessed using the Kessler 6-Item Psychological Distress Scale. Socioeconomic position indicators used were maternal education, paternal education, maternal occupation, paternal occupation, and household income. Repeated-measures analyses with a generalized estimating equation approach were used to investigate relationships between socioeconomic position and maternal depressive symptoms during the study period. Low socioeconomic position was associated with greater levels of maternal depressive symptoms between 4 months after childbirth and 3 years postpartum, but the association was not evident between 1 month before and after childbirth. The magnitude of the significant association between socioeconomic position and maternal depression was the greatest at 1 year postpartum but then became smaller. Among the five socioeconomic position indicators included, maternal education, paternal education, and household income showed graded inverse relationships with maternal depressive symptoms, while no significant relationship was found for paternal occupation over the study period. Socioeconomic inequalities in maternal depressive symptoms emerged in early childhood in a prospective study of Korean mothers. Purpose: Mercury (Hg) is a nonessential and toxic metal that is widely distributed in the environment. This study was performed to estimate the representative blood Hg level, to determine the contributing factors to Hg exposure, and to analyze the association of blood Hg with metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. Methods: Mercury exposure is assessed by total Hg concentration in blood. A total of 2,114 healthy adults who have not been exposed to Hg occupationally were sampled by the multistaged, sex-, and age-stratified probability method. Information was collected regarding the subjects' demographic characteristics, lifestyles, and past medical history. The participants then underwent physical examination and blood sampling. Results: The geometric mean concentration of Hg in whole blood was 3.90 μg/L, which was significantly influenced by sex, age, smoking, alcoholic consumption, residence area, and seafood intake after adjustment for confounders. Significant increases in body mass index, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and triglyceride were observed according to the blood Hg levels after adjustment for covariates. Also, Hg exposure was significantly associated with metabolic syndrome and their components such as obesity and increased fasting glucose. Conclusion: The blood Hg level in Korean adults is higher than that in USA and other Western countries, while it is similar to or lower than that in other Asian countries. The blood Hg level is influenced by sociodemographic factors and individual lifestyles including dietary habits. Furthermore, blood Hg is associated with metabolic syndrome, in which Hg exposure may play a role as a possible risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we analyzed and correlated the hysteresis characteristics and instability under negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) stress in p-channel low-temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors (TFTs). Positive V shifts were observed under the NBTI stress. The hysteresis does not appear to be affected by the NBTI stress; however, when the VG stress voltage is −40 V at 100°C, the hysteresis increases as the stress time increases and V shifts with sub-threshold slope (SS) degradation. Silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) memory devices were fabricated from polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) using the solid phase crystallization (SPC) method for use in a low-power system-on-panel (SOP) display. In these poly-Si SONOS memories, oxide or nitride was used as a buffer layer. The electrical characteristics, such as the threshold voltage ( V), subthreshold slope ( SS) and transconductance ( g), were determined for each SONOS device. To interpret the characteristics of both poly-Si devices, x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and flicker noise analysis were conducted. The results show that the poly-Si SONOS on the oxide layer has better electrical, memory characteristics, such as turn-on speed and g, program/erase, endurance and data retention than that on the nitride layer. From the XRD measurements, it is shown that the grain size of the poly-Si on the oxide layer is larger than that on the nitride layer. From the flicker noise analysis, the poly-Si device on oxide was shown to have less traps or defects in the channel layer than that on nitride. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the results of hallux valgus surgery between feet fixed with Kirschner wires and those fixed with a plate and screws. Methods: Between December 2008 and November 2009, 53 patients (62 feet) were treated with proximal chevron osteotomy and distal soft tissue procedure for symptomatic moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity. Thirty-four patients (41 feet) were stabilised with Kirschner wires (K-wire group) and 19 patients (21 feet) were stabilised with a locking plate (plate group). Clinical results were assessed using American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Radiographic parameters were compared between these groups. Recurrence rate at the last follow-up was compared between the K-wire and plate groups. Results: Mean AOFAS score was lower in the plate group, however, the difference between the groups was not statistically significant in AOFAS score at the last follow-up. Hallux valgus angle and intermetatarsal angle were significantly larger in the plate group at the last follow-up. Mean 1-2 metatarsal (MT) distance on immediately postoperative radiographs was significant larger in the plate group. Four (9.8 %) of the 41 feet in the K-wire group and 7 (33.3 %) of the 21 feet in the plate group showed hallux valgus recurrence at the last follow-up. The plate group had a significantly higher risk of recurrence than the K-wire group. Conclusions: Fixation of proximal chevron osteotomy using a plate and screws has a greater risk of hallux valgus recurrence than fixation using Kirschner wires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our knowledge of the embryonic development of the lymphatic vessels within the kidney is limited. The aim of this study was to establish the time of appearance and the distribution of intra-renal lymphatic vessels in the developing mouse kidney by using the lymphatic marker, LYVE-1. Kidneys from embryonic day 12 (E12) to E18, from neonates at post-natal day 1 (P1) to P21, and from adults were studied. In the adult mouse kidney, LYVE-1 was expressed mainly in the lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) and in a subset of endothelial cells in the glomerular capillaries. However, in the developing mouse kidney, LYVE-1 was also expressed transiently in F4/80/CD11b immature macrophages/dendritic cells and in the developing renal vein. LYVE-1 lymphatic vessels connected with extra-renal lymphatics were detected in the kidney at E13. F4/80/CD11b/LYVE-1 immature macrophages/dendritic cells appeared prior to the appearance of LYVE-1 renal lymphatic vessels and were closely intermingled or even formed part of the lymphatic vascular wall. Prox1 was expressed only in the LYVE-1 LECs from fetus to adult-hood, but not in LYVE-1 endothelial cells of the developing renal vein and macrophages/dendritic cells. Thus, lymphatic vessels of the kidney might originate by extension of extra-renal lymphatics through an active branching process possibly associated with F4/80/CD11b/LYVE-1 macrophages/dendritic cells. We sought to identify biomarkers in the amniotic fluid (AF) and specific signaling pathways related to spontaneous preterm delivery (SPTD, < 34 weeks) in women with preterm labor (PTL) without intra-uterine infection/inflammation (IUI). This was a retrospective cohort study of a total of 139 PTL women with singleton gestation (24 + 0 to 32 + 6 weeks) who underwent amniocentesis and who displayed no evidence of IUI. A nested case–control was conducted using pooled AF samples (n = 20) analyzed via label-free liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. In the total cohort, an ELISA validation study was performed for seven candidate proteins of interest. Proteomic analysis identified 77 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs, P < 0.05) in the AF from SPTD cases compared to term delivery controls. ELISA validation confirmed that women who had an SPTD before 34 weeks had significantly independently lower levels of VEGFR-1 and higher levels of lipocalin-2 and the Fc fragment of IgG binding protein in the AF. Five principle pathways associated with the 77 DEPs were identified, including glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and iron homeostasis.
