Noroviruses are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks in childcare centers and kindergartens. Their high transmissibility is partly due to their genetic diversity. AGE outbreaks that occurred in Seoul childcare centers and kindergartens from 2019 to 2022 were investigated, and 68 epidemiological reports prepared by public health centers in Seoul were used for data collection. In the three quarters of 2022, there were 40 outbreaks of AGE in Seoul childcare centers and kindergartens, which exceeded the 35 total outbreaks that occurred during the previous three years. The proportion of childcare centers and kindergartens with AGE outbreaks among all facilities in Seoul increased from 12.6% in 2019 to 58.8% in 2022. Noroviruses were the most common pathogens responsible for AGE outbreaks in these cases. From 2019 to 2021, norovirus GII.2 was the predominant genotype, and GII.4 was detected in about 25% of cases. However, in 2022, GII.4 became predominant and was detected in about 79% of cases. The attack rate and infection source of AGE outbreaks from 2019 to 2021 were not significantly different from those in 2022. In conclusion, the number of AGE outbreaks in Seoul childcare centers and kindergartens increased significantly, primarily because of increased norovirus GII.4 transmission in 2022. Severity of deceased donor kidney fibrosis impacts graft survival in deceased-donor kidney transplantation. Our aim was to identify potential miRNA biomarkers in urinary exosomes that mirror interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy (IFTA) severity. Among 109 urine samples from deceased donors, 34 displayed no IFTA in the zero-day biopsy (No IFTA group), while the remaining 75 deceased donor kidneys exhibited an IFTA score ≥ 1 (IFTA group). After analyzing previous reports and electronic databases, six miRNAs (miR-19, miR-21, miR-29c, miR-150, miR-200b, and miR-205) were selected as potential IFTA biomarker candidates. MiR-21, miR-29c, miR-150, and miR-205 levels were significantly higher, while miR-19 expression was significantly lower in the IFTA group. MiR-21 (AUC = 0.762; P < 0.001) and miR-29c (AUC = 0.795; P < 0.001) showed good predictive accuracy for IFTA. In the No IFTA group, the eGFR level at 1 week after transplantation was significantly higher compared to the IFTA group (41.34 mL/min/1.73m2 vs. 28.65 mL/min/1.73m2, P = 0.012). These findings signify the potential of urinary exosomal miRNAs as valuable biomarker candidates for evaluating the severity of IFTA in deceased donor kidneys before they undergo recovery. Purpose: Spinal tuberculosis, if not promptly treated, can lead to kyphotic deformity, causing persistent neurological abnormalities and discomfort. Spinal cord compression can occur due to ossification of the ligamentum flavum (OLF) at the apex of kyphosis. Traditional surgical interventions, including osteotomy and fixation, pose challenges and risks. We present a case of thoracic myelopathy in a patient with post-tuberculosis kyphosis, successfully treated with biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS). Method: A 73-year-old female with a history of untreated kyphosis presented with walking difficulties and lower limb pain. Imaging revealed a kyphotic deformity of 120° and OLF-induced cord compression at T8–9. UBE was performed under spinal anesthesia. Using the BESS technique, OLF was successfully removed with minimal damage to the stabilizing structures. Results: The patient exhibited neurological improvement after surgery, walking on the first day without gait instability. Follow-up at 1 year showed no kyphosis progression or recurrence of symptoms. BESS successfully resolved the cord compression lesion with minimal blood loss and damage. Conclusion: In spinal tuberculosis-related OLF, conventional open surgery poses challenges. BESS emerges as an excellent alternative, providing effective decompression with reduced instrumentation needs, minimal blood loss, and preservation of surrounding structures. This study aimed to create and validate a predictive model for renal function following live kidney donation, using pre-donation factors. Accurately predicting remaining renal function post live kidney donation is currently insufficient, necessitating an effective assessment tool. A multicenter retrospective study of 2318 live kidney donors from two independent centers (May 2007–December 2019) was conducted. The primary endpoint was the reduction in eGFR to below 60 mL/min/m2 6 months post-donation. The primary endpoint was achieved in 14.4% of the training cohort and 25.8% of the validation cohort. Sex, age, BMI, hypertension, preoperative eGFR, and remnant kidney proportion (RKP) measured by computerized tomography (CT) volumetry were found significant in the univariable analysis. These variables informed a scoring system based on multivariable analysis: sex (male: 1, female: 0), age at operation (< 30: 0, 30–39: 1, 40–59: 2, ≥ 60: 3), preoperative eGFR (≥ 100: 0, 90–99: 2, 80–89: 4, < 80: 5), and RKP (≥ 52%: 0, < 52%: 1). The total score ranged from 0 to 10. The model showed good discrimination for the primary endpoint in both cohorts. The prediction model provides a useful tool for estimating post-donation renal dysfunction risk, factoring in the side of the donated kidney. Purpose: Oligodendrogliomas (ODGs) are a subtype of diffuse lower-grade gliomas with overall survival of > 10 years. This study aims to analyze long-term outcomes and identify prognostic factors in patients with WHO grade 2 ODG. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 138 adult patients diagnosed with 1p/19q co-deleted ODG who underwent surgical resection or biopsy between 1994 and 2021, analyzing clinical data, treatment details, and outcomes. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated using Kaplan–Meier analysis. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses were utilized to identify significant prognostic factors. Results: In the gross total resection (GTR) group, 63 (45.7%) underwent observation and 5 (3.6%) received postoperative treatment; in the non-GTR group, 37 (26.8%) were observed and 33 (23.9%) received postoperative treatment. The median PFS and OS were 6.8 and 18.4 years, respectively. Between adjuvant treatment and observation, there was no significant difference in PFS or OS. However, GTR or STR with less than 10% residual tumor exhibited significantly better PFS and OS compared to PR or biopsy (p = 0.022 and 0.032, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that contrast enhancement on MRI was associated with worse PFS (HR = 2.36, p < 0.001) and OS (HR = 5.89, p = 0.001). And the presence of seizures at presentation was associated with improved OS (HR = 0.28, p = 0.006). Conclusion: This study underscores favorable long-term outcomes for patients with 1p/19q co-deleted ODG WHO grade 2. Objectives: To evaluate the added value of MR dynamic susceptibility contrast (DSC)-perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI)-derived tumour microvascular and oxygenation information with cerebral blood volume (CBV) to distinguish pseudoprogression from true progression (TP) in post-treatment glioblastoma. Methods: This retrospective single-institution study included patients with isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type glioblastoma and a newly developed or enlarging measurable contrast-enhancing mass within 12 weeks after concurrent chemoradiotherapy. CBV, capillary transit time heterogeneity (CTH), oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), and cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) were obtained from DSC-PWI. Predictors were selected using univariable logistic regression, and performance was measured with adjusted diagnostic odds with tumour volume and area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating characteristics analysis. Results: A total of 103 patients were included (mean age, 59.6 years; 59 women), with 67 cases of TP and 36 cases of pseudoprogression. Pseudoprogression exhibited higher CTH (4.0 vs. 3.4, p =.019) and higher OEF (12.7 vs. 10.7, p =.014) than TP, but a similar CBV (1.48 vs. 1.53, p =.13) and CMRO2 (7.7 vs. 7.3s, p =.598). Independent of tumour volume, both high CTH (adjusted odds ratio [OR] 1.52; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11–2.09, p =.009) and high OEF (adjusted OR 1.17; 95% CI:1.03–1.33, p =.016) were predictors of pseudoprogression. The combination of CTH, OEF, and CBV yielded higher diagnostic performance (AUC 0.71) than CBV alone (AUC 0.65). Conclusion: High intratumoural capillary transit heterogeneity and high oxygen extraction fraction derived from DSC-PWI have enhanced the diagnostic value of CBV in pseudoprogression of post-treatment IDH-wild type glioblastoma. Clinical relevance statement: In the early post-treatment stage of glioblastoma, pseudoprogression exhibited both high oxygen extraction fraction and high capillary transit heterogeneity and these dynamic susceptibility contrast-perfusion weighted imaging derived parameters have added value in cerebral blood volume-based noninvasive differentiation of pseudoprogression from true progression. Background: To investigate the incidence and risk factors of coronal vertical vertebral body fracture (CV-VBF) during lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) for degenerative lumbar disease. Methods: Clinical data, including age, sex, body mass index, and bone mineral density, were reviewed. Radiological assessments, such as facet joint arthrosis, intervertebral disc motion, index disc height, and cage profiles, were conducted. Posterior instrumentation was performed using either a single or staged procedure after LLIF. Demographic and surgical data were compared between patients with and without VBF. Results: Out of 273 patients (552 levels), 7 (2.6%) experienced CV-VBF. Among the 552 levels, VBF occured in 7 levels (1.3%). All VBF cases developed intraoperatively during LLIF, with no instances caused by cage subsidence during the follow-up period. Sagittal motion in segments adjacent to VBF was smaller than in others (4.6° ± 2.6° versus 6.5° ± 3.9°, P = 0.031). The average grade of facet arthrosis was 2.5 ± 0.7, indicating severe facet arthrosis. All fractures developed due to oblique placement of a trial or cage into the index disc space, leading to a nutcracker effect. These factors were not related to bone quality. Conclusions: CV-VBF after LLIF occurred in 2.6% of patients, accounting for 1.3% of all LLIF levels. A potential risk factor for VBF involves the nutcracker-impinging effect due to the oblique placement of a cage. Objectives: CT reconstruction algorithms affect radiomics reproducibility. In this study, we evaluate the effect of deep learning–based image conversion on CT reconstruction algorithms. Methods: This study included 78 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who underwent four-phase liver CTs comprising non-contrast, late arterial (LAP), portal venous (PVP), and delayed phase (DP), reconstructed using both filtered back projection (FBP) and advanced modeled iterative reconstruction (ADMIRE). PVP images were used to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) model to convert images from FBP to ADMIRE and vice versa. LAP, PVP, and DP images were used for validation and testing. Radiomic features were extracted for each patient with a semi-automatic segmentation tool. We used concordance correlation coefficients (CCCs) to evaluate the radiomics reproducibility for original FBP (oFBP) vs. original ADMIRE (oADMIRE), oFBP vs. converted FBP (cFBP), and oADMIRE vs. converted ADMIRE (cADMIRE). Results: In the test group including 30 patients, the CCC and proportion of reproducible features (CCC ≥ 0.85) for oFBP vs. oADMIRE were 0.65 and 32.9% (524/1595) for LAP, 0.65 and 35.9% (573/1595) for PVP, and 0.69 and 43.8% (699/1595) for DP. For oFBP vs. cFBP, the values increased to 0.92 and 83.9% (1339/1595) for LAP, 0.89 and 71.0% (1133/1595) for PVP, and 0.90 and 79.7% (1271/1595) for DP. Similarly, for oADMIRE vs. cADMIRE, the values increased to 0.87 and 68.1% (1086/1595) for LAP, 0.91 and 82.1% (1309/1595) for PVP, and 0.89 and 76.2% (1216/1595) for DP. Conclusions: CNN-based image conversion between CT reconstruction algorithms improved the radiomics reproducibility of HCCs. Clinical relevance statement: This study demonstrates that using a CNN-based image conversion technique significantly improves the reproducibility of radiomic features in HCCs, highlighting its potential for enhancing radiomics research in HCC patients. Diverse cases regarding the impact, with its related factors, of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health have been reported in previous studies. In this study, multivariable datasets were collected from 751 college students who could be easily affected by pandemics based on the complex relationships between various mental health factors. We utilized quantum annealing (QA)-based feature selection algorithms that were executed by commercial D-Wave quantum computers to determine the changes in the relative importance of the associated factors before and after the pandemic. Multivariable linear regression (MLR) and XGBoost models were also applied to validate the QA-based algorithms. Based on the experimental results, we confirm that QA-based algorithms have comparable capabilities in factor analysis research to the MLR models that have been widely used in previous studies. Furthermore, the performance of the QA-based algorithms was validated through the important factor results from the algorithms. Pandemic-related factors (e.g., confidence in the social system) and psychological factors (e.g. decision-making in uncertain situations) were more important in post-pandemic conditions. Although the results should be validated using other mental health variables or national datasets, this study will serve as a reference for researchers regarding the use of the quantum annealing approach in factor analysis with validation through real-world survey dataset analysis. Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas (PXA) are rare, accounting for < 1% of all astrocytomas. Literature on the clinical course and treatment outcomes of PXAs is limited. The study aimed to determine prognosis and treatment strategies for PXAs. Patients who had PXAs surgery between 2000–2021 were retrospectively analyzed for demographics and radiological characteristics. Initial and salvage treatment outcomes were recorded. Overall, 40 and 9 patients had grade 2 and 3 PXAs; their 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 75.8% and 37.0%, respectively (p = 0.003). Univariate analysis revealed that strong T1 enhancement (p = 0.036), infiltrative tumor margins (p < 0.001), peritumoral edema (p = 0.003), WHO grade (p = 0.005), and gross total resection (p = 0.005) affected the PFS. Multivariate analysis revealed that the WHO grade (p = 0.010) and infiltrative tumor margins (p = 0.008) influenced the PFS. The WHO grade (p = 0.027) and infiltrative tumor margins (p = 0.027) also affected the overall survival (OS). Subgroup analysis for grade 2 PXAs revealed no significant associations between adjuvant radiation therapy and the PFS and OS. This study highlighted the heterogeneous nature of PXAs and its impact on patient prognosis. Infiltrative tumor margins emerged as a key prognostic factor. Hypertension is a known risk factor for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). However, the role of temporal changes in blood pressure on the risk of SCA is not fully understood. This study was conducted to determine whether a temporal increase or decrease in blood pressure is associated with the risk of SCA. This study was based on nationwide healthcare insurance data. Individuals who underwent nationwide health check-ups in 2009 and 2011 were analyzed. A total of 2,801,153 individuals were evaluated for 8100 SCA events during the 17, 740, 420 person-years of follow-up. In a multivariate analysis, there were linear association between the degree of temporal elevation of systolic blood pressure (SBP) and the risk of SCA: (i) adjusted-hazard ratio (HR) 1.11 (p = 0.001) in 10 ≤ ΔSBP < 20 (mmHg) group; (ii) adjusted-HR 1.40 (p < 0.001) in 20 ≤ ΔSBP < 40 group; and (iii) adjusted-HR 1.88 (p < 0.001) in 40 ≤ ΔSBP group as compared with the reference group (− 10 ≤ ΔSBP < 10). Temporal increase in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) also a showed significant association with SCA risk with the highest risk observed in ∆DBP ≥ 25 group (adjusted-HR 1.61; p < 0.001) as compared with the reference group (− 5 ≤ ΔDBP < 5). The association between SBP and SCA was not affected by age, sex, presence of diabetes mellitus, or baseline SBP. In conclusion, a temporal increase in blood pressure was significantly associated with the occurrence of SCA, and this association was consistent across all subgroups. Purpose: Adjacent segment disease (ASD) is a common complication in fusion surgery. In the event of solid segmental fusion, previous implants can be removed or preserved during fusion extension for ASD. To compare the surgical outcomes of patients with and without implants and analyzes the risk factors for postoperative mechanical complications. Methods: Patients who underwent fusion extension for lumbar ASD from 2011 to 2019 with a minimum 2 year follow-up were retrospectively reviewed. Spinopelvic parameters were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. Clinical outcomes and surgical complications were compared between groups with implants preserved and removed. Risk factors for mechanical complications, including clinical, surgical, and radiographic factors were analyzed. Results: Sixty-nine patients (mean age, 69.9 ± 6.9 years) were included. The mean numbers of initial and extended fused segments were 2.8 ± 0.7 and 2.7 ± 0.7, respectively. Previous implants were removed in 43 patients (R group) and preserved in 26 patients (P group). Both groups showed an improvement in clinical outcomes without between-group differences. The operation time was significantly longer in R group (260 vs 207 min, p < 0.001). Mechanical complications occurred in 13 patients (12 in R group and 1 in P group) and reoperation was needed in 3 patients (R group). Implant removal, index fusion surgery including L5-S1, and postoperative sagittal malalignment were risk factors for mechanical complications. Conclusion: Implant removal was a risk factor for mechanical complications. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate autophagy in an extruded disc and to compare this activity with the activity in the remaining disc after lumbar disc herniation in the same patient. Methods: In total, 12 patients (females 4, males 8) with the extruded type of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) were surgically treated. Their mean age was 54.3 ± 15.8 years (range: 29 ~ 78 years). The mean interval from the occurrence of symptoms to the operation was 9.8 ± 9.4 weeks (range: 2 ~ 24 weeks). The extruded discs were excised, and the remaining disc material removed, to prevent recurrence of herniation. Immediately after specimen collection, all tissues were stored at −70 °C prior to analysis. Autophagy was assessed immunohistochemically and via Western blotting for Atg5, Atg7, Atg12, Atg12L1, and Beclin-1. And the relationship between autophagy and apoptosis was investigated by correlation analysis of caspase-3 with autophagy proteins. Results: The expression levels of autophagic markers were significantly increased in the extruded discs compared to the remaining discs within the same patients. The mean expression levels of Atg5, Atg7, Atg12, and Beclin-1 in extruded discs were statistically significantly higher than those in the remaining discs (P < 0.01, P < 0.001, P < 0.01, and P < 0.001 respectively). Conclusions: The autophagic pathway was more active in extruded disc material than in remaining disc material within the same patient. The optimization of geometrical pore control in high-capacity Ni-based cathode materials is required to enhance the cyclic performance of lithium-ion batteries. Enhanced porosity improves lithium-ion mobility by increasing the electrode–electrolyte contact area and reducing the number of ion diffusion pathways. However, excessive porosity can diminish capacity, thus necessitating optimizing pore distribution to compromise the trade-off relation. Accordingly, a statistically meaningful porosity estimation of electrode materials is required to engineer the local pore distribution inside the electrode particles. Conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image-based porosity measurement can be used for this purpose. However, it is labor-intensive and subjected to human bias for low-contrast pore images, thereby potentially lowering measurement accuracy. To mitigate these difficulties, we propose an automated image segmentation method for the reliable porosity measurement of cathode materials using deep convolutional neural networks specifically trained for the analysis of porous cathode materials. Combined with the preprocessed SEM image datasets, the model trained for 100 epochs exhibits an accuracy of > 97% for feature segmentation with regard to pore detection on the input datasets. This automated method considerably reduces manual effort and human bias related to the digitization of pore features in serial section SEM image datasets used in 3D electron tomography. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between sagittal plane characteristics of the spinal column and conservative treatment failure in acute osteoporotic spinal fractures (OSFs). Methods: As a retrospective study of single-institute data, thoracolumbar OSF patients with similar propensities in terms of location of fractures and results of bone mineral density were analyzed. Among them, 43 patients (group I) who needed reconstructive surgical interventions and 39 patients (group II) who obtained successful treatment through conservative care were included. General demographic data, radiographic features of fractures, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of fractures were analyzed. To investigate the relationship between global sagittal alignment of the spine and occurrence of delayed complication following OSFs, radiological sagittal parameters were analyzed. Results: The number of cases requiring reconstructive surgery was significantly higher when the index vertebra showed diffuse or mid-portion bone marrow changes in MRI. In terms of sagittal parameters, pelvic incidence (group I 59.1° ± 11.9°, group II 54.6° ± 9.8°) and thoracolumbar angle (group I 26.5° ± 14.1°, group II 17.4° ± 11.2°) were significantly higher in group I. Logistic regression analysis showed that higher pelvic incidence (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.01–1.18, p value < 0.05) and higher thoracolumbar angle (OR 1.09, 95% CI 1.02–1.17, p value < 0.05) were significant risk factors for delayed complications requiring reconstructive surgery following OSFs. Conclusion: Delayed complications requiring reconstructive surgery following OSFs are related to sagittal plane parameters of the spine such as high pelvic incidences, in addition to previously known radiographic characteristics of fractures. Background: Young atrial fibrillation (AF) patients have been underrepresented in studies of radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) and the outcome of RFCA has not been widely addressed. We investigated age-related differences in clinical features, the recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmia, and its predictors of patients who underwent RFCA for AF. Methods: This is a multicenter prospective study of 2799 patients who underwent RFCA for AF in 2017–2020. The patients were divided into two groups — group A (age < 60 years, n = 1269) and group B (age ≥ 60 years, n = 1530) — and a recurrence of any atrial tachyarrhythmia 1 year after RFCA following a 90-day blanking period was compared. Results: The mean age was 51.6 ± 6.7 and 66.8 ± 5.2 years for groups A and B, respectively. Higher body mass index, smaller left atrium, and more prevalent cardiomyopathy and obstructive sleep apnea were observed in group A. Overall, 1-year atrial tachyarrhythmia-free survival was 85.6% and lower in young patients (83.1% in group A vs. 87.7% in group B, log-rank p < 0.01): adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of recurrence (95% confidence interval (CI)), 1.45 (1.13–1.86) for group A compared to group B (p < 0.01). The association between younger age and higher recurrence was continuously observed in patients under 60 years. Any non-PV ablation was associated with a lower recurrence of atrial tachyarrhythmia in group B (aHR 0.68 (0.47–0.96), p < 0.05), but not in group A. Conclusions: AF patients younger than 60 years had a higher 1-year AF recurrence after RFCA. Young AF patients might have distinctive pathophysiology of AF requiring more integrated management. Objectives: The prognostic value of subventricular zone distance (SVD) is unclear because of different definitions and lack of evaluation of clinical survival models. The aim of this study was to define SVD and evaluate its prognostic value in a survival nomogram for glioblastoma. Methods: This retrospective study included 158 (SVD biomarker) from historical glioblastoma patients and 187 (survival modeling) with IDH-wild type glioblastoma from a prospective registry (NCT02619890). SVD was assessed by two radiologists: definition 1, the distance between the tumor edge to subventricular zone (SVZ); definition 2, the distance between the tumor centroid to SVZ; definition 3, enhancement at the ventricular wall. The associations between SVD and overall survival (OS) were evaluated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Performance of an updated SVD survival model was compared with that of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) 0525 nomogram. Results: SVD according to both definition 1 (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94–0.99; p =.011) and definition 2 (HR: 0.96, 0.94–0.98, p <.001) was adversely associated with OS. Definition 1 was adversely associated with PFS (HR: 0.96, 0.94–0.99, p =.008) and showed the highest reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.90). The SVD-updated model showed similar to better performance than the RTOG model for predicting OS of up to 3 years (AUC: 0.735–0.738 vs. 0.687–0.708), with higher time-dependent specificity for 1-year (89.9% vs. 70.6%) and 3-year OS (93.3% vs. 80.0%). Conclusion: SVZ distance is an independent adverse prognostic factor in patients with IDH-wild type glioblastoma. Updating the survival model with SVZ provides better time-dependent specificity and reproducibility. Anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) is currently the most widely prescribed induction regimen for preventing acute rejection after solid organ transplantation. However, the optimal dose of ATG induction regimen in Asian kidney recipients is unclear. Using the Korean Organ Transplantation Registry, we performed a retrospective cohort study of 4579 adult patients who received renal transplantation in South Korea and divided them into three groups according to the induction regimen: basiliximab group (n = 3655), low-dose ATG group (≤ 4.5 mg/kg; n = 467), and high-dose ATG group (> 4.5 mg/kg; n = 457). We applied the Toolkit for Weighting and Analysis of Nonequivalent Groups (TWANG) package to generate high-quality propensity score weights for intergroup comparisons. During four-year follow-ups, the high-dose ATG group had the highest biopsy-proven acute rejection rate (basiliximab 20.8% vs. low-dose ATG 22.4% vs. high-dose ATG 25.6%; P < 0.001). However, the rates of overall graft failure (4.0% vs. 5.0% vs. 2.6%; P < 0.001) and mortality (1.7% vs. 2.8% vs. 1.0%; P < 0.001) were the lowest in the high-dose ATG group. Our results show that high-dose ATG induction (> 4.5 mg/kg) was superior to basiliximab and low-dose ATG induction in terms of graft and patient survival in Asian patients undergoing kidney transplant. Purpose: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) markedly improve the clinical outcomes of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the intracranial efficacy of ICI is not well elucidated, and previous studies showed discordant outcomes of ICI between intracranial and extracranial diseases. We aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and the intracranial and extracranial response of patients with NSCLC and brain metastasis who were treated with ICI in the real-world setting. Methods: A total of 55 patients (median age, 63 years [range 42–80]; male, 78%) who had NSCLC with brain metastasis and treated with ICI monotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. We separately assessed the response rates of brain lesions and systemic lesions, and estimated the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Results: The median OS and overall PFS were 17.0 months (95% CI 10.3–25.6) and 3.19 months (95% CI 2.24–5.03), respectively. The intracranial objective response rate and disease control rate of ICI were 36 and 54%, respectively. Among the 44 patients who showed disease progression, only 32% (n = 14) showed concordant outcomes and 9 patients (20%) showed opposing discordant outcomes. Eight patients continued ICI with local brain therapy after intracranial progression, and their median extracranial PFS and OS were 15 months (95% CI 5.0—not assessed [NA]) and 23.8 months (95% CI 14.7—NA), respectively. Conclusions: ICI monotherapy had a clinically meaningful intracranial efficacy in NSCLC patients with brain metastasis. Purpose: To investigate the interaction of telomerase activity and telomere length on neuro-protection or neuro-degeneration effects after spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: A contusive SCI model was developed using 56 Sprague–Dawley rats. Seven rats were allocated into acute injury phase groups (1, 3, 8, 24, and 48 h), and sub-acute and chronic injury phase groups (1, 2, and 4 weeks). Telomerase activity was assessed by telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) and telomeric repeat binding factor-2 (TERF-2). Differentiation of activated neural stem cells was investigated by co-expression of neuronal/glial cell markers. Apoptosis expression was also investigated by caspase-3, 8, and 9 using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labelling staining. Immunofluorescence staining and western blotting were performed for quantitative analyses. Results: Expression of TERT increased gradually until 24 h post-injury, and was decreased following SCI (P < 0.05). TERF-2 also was increased following SCI until 24 h post-injury and then decreased with time (P < 0.05). Co-localization of TERT and TERF-2 was higher at 24 h post-injury. High expression of TERT was seen in neurons (Neu N Ab), however, expression of TERT was relatively lower in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Apoptosis analysis showed persistent high expression of caspases-3, -9, and -8 during the observation period. Conclusions: Increased TERT and TERF-2 activity were noted 24 h post-injury in the acute phase of SCI with TERF-2 maintaining telomeric-repeat length. Our results suggest that increased activity of telomere maintenance may be related to neuro-protective mechanisms against subsequent apoptosis resulting from DNA damage after acute SCI. Objectives: Anti-angiogenic therapy may not benefit all patients with recurrent glioblastomas, and imaging biomarker predicting treatment response to anti-angiogenic therapy is currently limited. We aimed to develop and validate vascular habitats based on perfusion and vessel size to predict time to progression (TTP) in patients with recurrent glioblastomas treated with bevacizumab. Methods: Sixty-nine patients with recurrent glioblastomas treated with bevacizumab who underwent pretreatment MRI with dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging and vessel architectural imaging were enrolled. Vascular habitats were constructed using vessel size index (VSI) and relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV). Associations with vascular habitats and TTP were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. In a prospectively enrolled validation cohort consisting of 15 patients (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier; NCT04143425), stratification of TTP was demonstrated by the Kaplan-Meier method (log-rank test) using vascular habitats. Results: Three vascular habitats consisting of high, intermediate, and low angiogenic habitats were identified with rCBV and VSI. Both high angiogenic and intermediate angiogenic habitats were significantly associated with a shorter TTP (hazard ratio [HR], 2.78 and 1.82, respectively; largest p =.003) and so was rCBV (HR, 2.15; p =.02). Concordance probability index of vascular habitat combining high and intermediate angiogenic habitats was 0.74. Vascular habitats stratified patients as good or poor responder in a prospective cohort (p =.059). Conclusions: Perfusion- and vessel size-derived vascular habitats predicted TTP in recurrent glioblastomas treated with anti-angiogenic therapy and aided patient stratification in a prospective validation cohort. Purpose: To compare paraspinal muscle quality between patients with single and multiple osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) and evaluate the role of the paraspinal muscles in OVFs. Methods: A total of 262 consecutive patients with OVFs were retrospectively analyzed in two groups: those with single OVF (n = 173) and those with multiple OVFs (n = 89). The cross-sectional area (CSA) and fatty degeneration of the paraspinal muscles were calculated from axial T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging at the level of the L4 upper endplate by manual tracing in ImageJ software. Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to analyze correlations of paraspinal muscle quality to multiple OVFs. Results: FD in all the paraspinal muscles was significantly higher in the multiple OVF group than the single OVF group (all p < 0.005). The functional CSA (fCSA) of the paraspinal muscles was significantly lower in the multiple OVF group than the single OVF group (all Ps < 0.001), except for the erector spine (p = 0.304). The Pearson's correlation analysis showed significant positive inter-correlations for the fCSAs of all the paraspinal muscles and the occurrence of multiple OVFs. Conclusions: The pure muscle volumes of the multifidus, psoas major, and quadratus lumborum were lower in patients with multiple OVFs than in those with a single OVF. Furthermore, the inter-correlation among all the paraspinal muscles indicate that the muscle-bone crosstalk profoundly existed in vertebral fracture cascade. Brain metastasis is a common complication in melanoma patients with BRAF and NRAS mutations and has a poor prognosis. Although BRAF inhibitors are clinically approved, their poor brain penetration limits their efficacy in brain metastasis. Thus, melanoma brain metastasis still requires better treatment. Belvarafenib, a pan-RAF inhibitor, has reported antitumor activity in melanoma with RAF and RAS mutations in animal models and patients. However, brain permeability and antitumor efficacy on brain metastasis have not been determined. This study confirmed the brain penetration of belvarafenib, the antitumor activity on BRAF and NRAS mutant melanoma, and the efficacy on melanoma within the brain. Belvarafenib strongly suppressed melanoma in BRAF V600E mutant A375SM tumor-bearing mice. It also significantly inhibited tumor growth in NRAS mutant SK-MEL-30 and K1735 tumor-bearing mice and synergized to enhance the antitumor activity combined with cobimetinib or atezolizumab. Belvarafenib was penetrated at considerable levels into the brains of mice and rats following oral administration. The exposure of belvarafenib in the brain was similar to or higher than that in plasma, and this high brain penetration differed significantly from that of other BRAF inhibitors with low brain penetration. Most importantly, belvarafenib strongly reduced tumor burden and markedly improved survival benefits in mice intracranially implanted with A375SM melanoma. These results demonstrated that belvarafenib, which has favorable BBB permeability, and potent antitumor activity on the tumors with BRAF/NRAS mutations, may be a promising therapeutic option for patients with BRAF/NRAS mutant melanoma brain metastasis. Long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) requires processing a large amount of data with human intervention often involved. Operational modal analysis (OMA) is generally treated as prerequisite for vibration-based SHM to obtain modal parameters, including natural frequency, damping ratio and mode shape. Bayesian modal analysis has received considerable attention in recent years, as it identifies modal parameters but also provides their uncertainties. In conventional Bayesian OMA, manual operation includes initial frequency and bandwidth selection. The former is often visually picked from a singular value spectrum, while the latter is chosen with the consideration of a trade-off between the data used for making inference and modeling error involved. The above procedures have limited the application of Bayesian approach in processing long-term data. This work aims at developing an automation technique for Bayesian fast Fourier transform modal identification. A stabilization diagram is first built and automatically interpreted by modal validation criteria and clustering strategy to obtain the initial frequency. Spurious modes are also cleared in this step. A series of effective bandwidth factors within a predefined factor range are then determined for the selection of frequency band. The proposed automation method is verified by a numerical example and then applied on the Z24 benchmark bridge for long-term data analysis. Results show that the automation method is able to accurately identify modal parameters with minimum human intervention, even for closely spaced and weakly excited modes. The role of emotions in all stages of the moral decision-making process has previously been addressed. Little attention, however, has been paid to how the decision-making process is altered when dissimilar types of emotions are suppressed. In four studies, we investigated the effects of suppressing guilt and suppressing shame on the moral decision-making process. Overall results indicate that suppression of guilt and shame influences each of the three stages of the moral decision-making process—judgment, intention, and behavior—differently. In particular, suppressing guilt influenced the three stages consecutively in the moral decision-making process. In contrast, suppressing shame directly influenced moral behavior without traveling through the stages of moral decision-making consecutively. Our results imply distinctive characteristics of guilt and shame—not only in their generative processes but also in their consequences, as well as in the stages of moral judgment, intention, and behavior—when they are suppressed. Simultaneous deceased donor pancreas and living donor kidney transplant (SPLK) has certain advantages over conventional simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant (SPK) and may be beneficial for overcoming the paucity of organs needed for diabetic patients requiring transplant. We compared the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent either SPK (n = 149) or SPLK (n = 46) in terms of pre- and post-transplantation variables, development of de novo DSA, occurrence of biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR), and graft survival rates. There were no significant differences in the baseline characteristics between the SPK and SPLK groups except for the shorter cold ischemic time of kidney grafts, shorter duration of diabetes, older age of pancreas graft-donors, and younger age of kidney graft-donors in the SPLK group. Our results showed that the death-censored pancreas graft survival rate was lower in the SPLK group. In addition, the incidence of BPAR of the pancreas graft was higher in the SPLK group. There was no significant difference in the presence of de novo DSA and the rates of kidney graft failure, kidney BPAR, and mortality. Objective: To measure the prevalence of adrenal nodules detected on staging CT in patients with resectable colorectal cancer, and the proportion of patients with malignant nodules among them. Methods: This retrospective study included 6474 patients (median age, 65; interquartile range, 56–73; 3902 men) who underwent staging CT for colorectal cancer between May 2003 and December 2018. The patients had potentially resectable colorectal cancer, including resectable hepatic or pulmonary metastases. Through retrospective CT image review, patients with adrenal nodules were identified for the prevalence of adrenal nodule. Among patients with adrenal nodules, per-patient proportions of malignant nodules, adrenal metastasis from colorectal cancer, and additional adrenal examinations (biopsy or imaging tests) were measured. A secondary analysis was performed using data from the official CT reports. Results: The prevalence of adrenal nodules was 5.6% (363 of 6474; 95% CI: 5.1, 6.2). The proportions of malignant nodules and adrenal metastasis from colorectal cancer were 0.8% (3 of 363; 0.2, 2.4) and 0.3% (1 of 363; 0.0, 1.5), respectively. 6.1% (22 of 363; 3.8, 9.0) of the patients underwent additional adrenal examination. According to official CT reports, the prevalence of adrenal nodules and proportions of malignant nodules, adrenal metastasis from colorectal cancer, and additional adrenal examination were 1.9% (125 of 6474; 1.6, 2.3), 1.6% (2 of 125; 0.2, 5.7), 0% (0 of 125; 0.0, 2.9), and 10.4% (1 of 125; 5.7, 17.1), respectively. Conclusion: Adrenal nodules detected in staging CTs in patients with otherwise resectable colorectal cancers are rarely malignant. Purpose: This study evaluates the prognostic significance of EMVI and DEMI on preoperative CT in patients with ascending colon cancer. Methods: This retrospective study included consecutive patients with T3 ascending colon cancer from January 2012 to December 2016 in a tertiary center. Two radiologists independently reviewed EMVI, DEMI, and nodal status on preoperative CT. We assessed the association of age, sex, mucinous adenocarcinoma, EMVI, and DEMI with metastasis on preoperative CT using univariable and multivariable analysis. We also compared disease-free survival (DFS) with and without variables (age, sex, mucinous adenocarcinoma, EMVI, DEMI and adjuvant chemotherapy) using Cox's proportional hazards models. We assessed interobserver agreements on imaging features using the Cohen's weighted kappa. Results: Of 237 patients [107 men; mean (standard deviation) age, 66 (13) years], 24 had metastases on preoperative CT. Positive EMVI was associated with metastasis (odds ratio 16.9; P < 0.001) on multivariable analysis. Of 194 patients [83 men; 65 (13) years] included for DFS analysis, recurrence was observed in 31 (16%) with median follow-up of 53 months. Positive EMVI [hazard ratio (HR) 4.8; P < 0.001] and DEMI > 5 mm (HR 5.5; P < 0.001) were associated with worse DFS. Interobserver agreements were good (kappa = 0.64–0.67). Conclusion: Positive EMVI and DEMI > 5 mm on preoperative CT were associated with a worse T3 ascending colon cancer prognosis. Individuals, despite having practically identical choices, often evaluate one option as being more favorable when described in a positive (vs. negative) frame, a phenomenon known as the attribute framing effect. The present study sought to identify whether this effect is derived from a more favorable evaluation of positively framed information or a less favorable evaluation of negatively framed information, by comparing the positive- and negative-framing conditions with a control condition that presents both positive and negative information. As predicted, the results showed a significant cultural variation in the direction from which the framing effect was derived. For North American participants, the attribute framing effect was found to be driven by highly unfavorable evaluations of negatively framed information (e.g., 10 "Not Recommended" reviews). On the other hand, for South Korean participants, this effect was guided by highly favorable evaluations of positively framed information (e.g., 90 "Recommended" reviews). Objectives: To determine whether imaging-based risk stratification enables prognostication in diffuse glioma, NOS (not otherwise specified). Methods: Data from 220 patients classified as diffuse glioma, NOS, between January 2011 and December 2020 were retrospectively included. Two neuroradiologists analyzed pre-surgical CT and MRI to assign gliomas to the three imaging-based risk types considering well-known imaging phenotypes (e.g., T2/FLAIR mismatch). According to the 2021 World Health Organization classification, the three risk types included (1) low-risk, expecting oligodendroglioma, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutant, and 1p/19q-codeleted; (2) intermediate-risk, expecting astrocytoma, IDH-mutant; and (3) high-risk, expecting glioblastoma, IDH-wildtype. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated for each risk type. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic analysis using 10-fold cross-validation with 100-fold bootstrapping was used to compare the performance of an imaging-based survival model with that of a historical molecular-based survival model published in 2015, created using The Cancer Genome Archive data. Results: Prognostication according to the three imaging-based risk types was achieved for both PFS and OS (log-rank test, p < 0.001). The imaging-based survival model showed high prognostic value, with areas under the curves (AUCs) of 0.772 and 0.650 for 1-year PFS and OS, respectively, similar to the historical molecular-based survival model (AUC = 0.74 for PFS and 0.87 for OS). The imaging-based survival model achieved high long-term performance in both 3-year PFS (AUC = 0.806) and 5-year OS (AUC = 0.812). Conclusion: Imaging-based risk stratification achieved histomolecular-level prognostication in diffuse glioma, NOS, and could aid in guiding patient referral for insufficient or unsuccessful molecular diagnosis. This study aimed to reveal the status of physical fitness (PF) levels and determine whether hand grip strength (HGS) could be used to estimate other PF parameters in older adults from large population data. A total of 46,269 participants aged ≥ 65 years who participated in the 2019 National Fitness Award Project in South Korea were included in the analysis. Of the participants, 6.8% had the highest level of overall physical fitness, while 48.9% had the lowest level. The proportion of overall PF levels differed significantly according to age groups. Significant associations between HGS and other PF parameters (30-s chair stand test, 2-min or 6-min walk test, sit-and-reach test, 3-m backwards walk test, and Figure-of-8 walk test) were noted and the group with low HGS (< 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women) had significantly higher odds of having the lowest level of overall PF (odds ratio: 5.232 in men and 6.351 in women), after adjusting for age and body mass index. HGS could estimate muscular strength and endurance, aerobic fitness, flexibility, balance skills, and coordination skills, as well as overall PF level in older adults, and could be used as a substitute test for their PF level in limited situations. We aimed to evaluate the radiographic and clinical outcomes after gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) for trigeminal schwannomas (TSs). A total of 87 patients who underwent GKRS for TSs between 1990 and 2020 were enrolled. The mean tumor volume was 4.3 cm3. The median prescribed dose for the margins of the tumor was 13 Gy. The median follow-up duration was 64.3 months (range 12.0–311.5 months). The overall local tumor control rate was 90%, and the symptom response rate was 93%. The response rate for each symptom was 88% for facial pain, 97% for facial sensory change, and 86% for cranial nerve deficits. Nineteen (22%) patients showed transient swelling, which had regressed at the time of the last follow-up. Cystic tumors were associated with transient swelling (p = 0.04). A tumor volume of < 2.7 cm3 was associated with local tumor control in univariable analysis. Transient swelling was associated with symptom control failure in both univariable and multivariable analyses (p = 0.04, odds ratio 14.538). Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a medical disaster for both the victim and the society. Despite intrinsic limitations in the management of SCA, primary prevention has been overlooked and risk factors for SCA are not fully understood. We aimed to evaluate whether hypertension and diabetes mellitus (DM), including pre-hypertension and impaired fasting glucose (IFG), are associated with increased risk of SCA. We performed a nationwide population-based analysis using the Korean National Health Insurance Service. People who underwent a national health check-up in 2009 were enrolled. The risk of SCA was evaluated in people with hypertension and DM with a clinical follow-up through December 2018. A total of 4,056,423 people with 33,345,378 person-years of follow-up and 16,352 SCA events were examined. People with hypertension had 65.4% increased risk of SCA (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.654 [1.572–1.739]; p < 0.001). Pre-hypertension was also associated with 21.3% increased risk of SCA (adjusted HR = 1.213 [1.158–1.272]; p < 0.001). People who had IFG and DM showed 7.5% (adjusted HR = 1.075 [1.035–1.117]; p < 0.001) and 80.1% (adjusted HR = 1.801 [1.731–1.875]; p < 0.001) increased risk of SCA, respectively. People with DM who took anti-diabetic medication showed significantly lower risk of SCA compared with uncontrolled DM patients (fasting glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL) (adjusted HR = 0.625 [0.533–0.733]; p < 0.001). Coexistence of hypertension and DM was associated with an even higher risk of SCA (adjusted HR = 3.078 [2.877–3.293]; p < 0.001). In conclusion, the risk of SCA is significantly higher in people with hypertension and DM, including pre-hypertension and IFG. Introduction: Treatment persistence for anticoagulant therapy is important in preventing thromboembolism in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) patients. Understanding drug utilization pattern and treatment changes in oral anticoagulant (OAC) users may facilite better NVAF management. Thus, our study aimed to examine OAC treatment patterns preceding events leading to switch or discontinuation and medication adherence in Korean NVAF patients. Methods: We conducted a drug utilization study on all Korean patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) newly prescribed OACs between July 2015 and November 2016 using the national claims data. We assessed treatment changes such as switching and discontinuation from index OAC and relevant events preceding the change and examined patient characteristics as predictors of changes that occurred among OAC users. Medication adherence was compared among OAC users by calculating the medication possession ratio (MPR). Results: A total of 48,389 NVAF patients were identified who initiated OACs within the study period. Most initiated nonvitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) (22% apixaban, 24% dabigatran, 37% rivaroxaban), and 18% initiated warfarin. The frequency of switch to another OAC was 8.8% for apixaban, 16.1% for dabigatran, 6.6% for rivaroxaban, and 19.1% for warfarin. The frequency of discontinuation was lower for apixaban (22.9%), dabigatran (26.3%), and rivaroxaban (25.7%) than warfarin (31.6%). Compared to warfarin, NOAC users were less likely to switch treatment. Thromboembolic event was the most common clinical event preceding switch from warfarin to NOAC and from NOAC to warfarin. Discontinuation of OAC was often preceded by a bleeding event. Patients who initiated apixaban showed significantly higher mean MPR compared to those on dabigatran and warfarin. Conclusion: In real-world practice in Korea, we have observed treatment change to be common in OAC users. Our results indicate better medication adherence with NOACs than with warfarin. Objectives: First, to measure inter-observer agreement regarding tumor resectability and response, and second, to measure diagnostic performance in predicting negative resection margin, on re-staging CTs of patients who received neoadjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer. Methods: This retrospective study included patients who received neoadjuvant therapy for borderline resectable pancreatic cancer from 2017 to 2020. Six readers independently evaluated initial staging and re-staging CT images. They categorized the resectability on re-staging CT based on the NCCN guideline, and evaluated tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy according to our proposed criteria on a 5-grade scale. For inter-observer agreement, Gwet's agreement coefficients were used. A crossed random effect model was used to pool the sensitivity and specificity of six readers in predicting negative resection margin. Results: Seventy-seven patients with the median age of 66 (59–70) were included. The pooled agreement for tumor resectability was 0.64 (95% CI, 0.56–0.71) for differentiating the three categories, and 0.84 (0.77–0.91) for differentiating resectable or borderline resectable cancer vs. unresectable cancer. Agreement for tumor response grade was 0.89 (0.85–0.92). The pooled sensitivity and specificity for predicting negative resection margin were 48% (43–52%) and 61% (57–64%), respectively, when only "resectable" on re-staging CT was considered as index test positive. When either "resectable"' or "borderline resectable" was considered as positive, the pooled sensitivity and specificity were 91% (89–94%) and 5% (4–6%), respectively. Conclusion: CT can be used reliably with a high inter-observer agreement in selecting candidates for surgery after neoadjuvant therapy of pancreatic cancer. Data for Asian kidney transplants are very limited. We investigated the relative importance of prognostic markers in Asian kidney transplants by using Korean Organ Transplantation Registry (KOTRY) cohort. Prediction models were developed by data-driven variable selection approach. The relative importance of the selected predictors was measured by dominance analysis. A total of 4854 kidney transplant donor-recipient pairs were analyzed. Overall patient survival rates were 99.8%, 98.8%, and 91.8% at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. Death-censored graft survival rates were 98.4%, 97.0%, and 95.8% at 1, 3, and 5 years. Biopsy-proven acute rejection free survival rates were 90.1%, 87.4%, and 87.03% at 1, 3, and 5 years. The top 3 dominant predictors for recipient mortality within 1 year were recipient cardiovascular disease history, deceased donor, and recipient age. The dominant predictors for death-censored graft loss within 1 year were acute rejection, deceased donor, and desensitization. The dominant predictors to acute rejection within 1 year were donor age, HLA mismatched numbers, and desensitization. We presented clinical characteristics of patients enrolled in KOTRY during the last 5 years and investigated dominant predictors for early post-transplant outcomes, which would be useful for clinical decision-making based on quantitative measures. Objective: To evaluate the value of the contrast enhancing pattern on pre-treatment MRI for predicting the response to anti-angiogenic treatment in patients with IDH-wild type recurrent glioblastoma. Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 65 patients with IDH wild-type recurrent glioblastoma who received standard therapy and then received either bevacizumab (46 patients) or temozolomide (19 patients) as a secondary treatment. The contrast enhancing pattern on pre-treatment MRI was visually analyzed and dichotomized into contrast enhancing lesion (CEL) dominant and non-enhancing lesion (NEL) dominant types. Quantitative volumetric analysis was used to support the dichotomization. The Kaplan–Meier method and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were used to stratify progression free survival (PFS) according to the treatment in the entire patients, CEL dominant group, and NEL dominant group. Results: In all patients, the PFS of those treated with bevacizumab was not significantly different from those treated with temozolomide (log-rank test, P = 0.96). When the contrast enhancing pattern was considered, bevacizumab was associated with longer PFS in the CEL dominant group (P = 0.031), whereas temozolomide showed longer PFS in the NEL dominant group (P = 0.022). Quantitative analysis revealed mean values for the proportion of solid-enhancing tumor of 13.7% for the CEL dominant group and 4.3% for the NEL dominant group. Conclusion: Patients with the CEL dominant type showed a better treatment response to bevacizumab, whereas NEL dominant types showed a better response to temozolomide. Oxidation can deteriorate the properties of copper that are critical for its use, particularly in the semiconductor industry and electro-optics applications1–7. This has prompted numerous studies exploring copper oxidation and possible passivation strategies8. In situ observations have, for example, shown that oxidation involves stepped surfaces: Cu2O growth occurs on flat surfaces as a result of Cu adatoms detaching from steps and diffusing across terraces9–11. But even though this mechanism explains why single-crystalline copper is more resistant to oxidation than polycrystalline copper, the fact that flat copper surfaces can be free of oxidation has not been explored further. Here we report the fabrication of copper thin films that are semi-permanently oxidation resistant because they consist of flat surfaces with only occasional mono-atomic steps. First-principles calculations confirm that mono-atomic step edges are as impervious to oxygen as flat surfaces and that surface adsorption of O atoms is suppressed once an oxygen face-centred cubic (fcc) surface site coverage of 50% has been reached. Objectives: To compare the dose reduction potential (DRP) of a vendor-agnostic deep learning model (DLM, ClariCT.AI) with that of a vendor-specific deep learning–based image reconstruction algorithm (DLR, TrueFidelity™). Methods: Computed tomography (CT) images of a multi-sized image quality phantom (Mercury v4.0) were acquired under six radiation dose levels (0.48/0.97/1.93/3.87/7.74/15.47 mGy) and were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP) and three strength levels of the DLR (low/medium/high). The FBP images were denoised using the DLM. For all DLM and DLR images, the detectability index (d′) (a task-based detection performance metric) was obtained, under various combinations of three target sizes (10/5/1 mm), five inlets (CT value difference with the background; −895/50/90/335/1000 HU), five phantom diameters (36/31/26/21/16 cm), and six radiation dose levels. Dose reduction potential (DRP) measures the dose reduction made by using DLM or DLR, while yielding d′ equivalent to that of FBP at full dose. Results: The DRPs of the DLM, DLR-low, DLR-medium, and DLR-high were 86% (81–88%), 60% (46–67%), 76% (60–81%), and 87% (78–92%), respectively. For 10-mm targets, the DRP of the DLM (87%) was higher than that of all DLR algorithms (58–86%). However, for smaller targets (5 mm/1 mm), the DRPs of the DLR-high (89/88%) were greater than those of the DLM (87/84%). Conclusion: The dose reduction potential of the vendor-agnostic DLM was shown to be comparable to that of the vendor-specific DLR at high strength and superior to those of the DLRs at medium and low strengths. Atrial fibrosis can present as an arrhythmogenic substrate that is correlated with higher recurrence after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. Galectin-3, a beta-galactoside-binding lectin, is highly expressed and secreted from macrophages and is important in inflammation and fibrosis. We assessed the clinical implications of serum galectin-3 in patients with atrial fibrillation. This was a prospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation in a tertiary referral center from February 2017 to September 2017. Intracardiac blood sampling, echocardiographic measurements, magnetic resonance imaging with late gadolinium enhancement, electrophysiologic testing, and endocardial voltage mapping were consistently implemented in 75 patients before the ablation. Serum galectin-3 level was higher in patients with diabetes mellitus and was correlated with values that indicated the left atrial size. During a median 14 months of follow-up, atrial tachyarrhythmia recurred in 27% of patients. In multivariable Cox regression analysis, non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (hazard ratio 6.8; 95% confidence interval 1.6–28.9) and higher galectin-3 levels (hazard ratio 1.3; 95% confidence interval 1.0–1.7) were associated with increased risk of recurrence. In this study, we performed metal (Ag, Ni, Cu, or Pd) electroplating of core–shell metallic Ag nanowire (AgNW) networks intended for use as the anode electrode in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to modify the work function (WF) and conductivity of the AgNW networks. This low-cost and facile electroplating method enabled the precise deposition of metal onto the AgNW surface and at the nanowire (NW) junctions. AgNWs coated onto a transparent glass substrate were immersed in four different metal electroplating baths: those containing AgNO3 for Ag electroplating, NiSO4 for Ni electroplating, Cu2P2O7 for Cu electroplating, and PdCl2 for Pd electroplating. The solvated metal ions (Ag+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Pd2+) in the respective electroplating baths were reduced to the corresponding metals on the AgNW surface in the galvanostatic mode under a constant electric current achieved by linear sweep voltammetry via an external circuit between the AgNW networks (cathode) and a Pt mesh (anode). The amount of electroplated metal was systematically controlled by varying the electroplating time. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that the four different metals (shells) were successfully electroplated on the AgNWs (core), and the nanosize-controlled electroplating process produced metal NWs with varying diameters, conductivities, optical transmittances, and WFs. The metal-electroplated AgNWs were successfully employed as the anode electrodes of the OLEDs. This facile and low-cost method of metal electroplating of AgNWs to increase their WFs and conductivities is a promising development for the fabrication of next-generation OLEDs. Objectives: The identification of viable tumor after stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is important for future targeted therapy. This study aimed to determine whether tumor habitat on structural and physiologic MRI can distinguish viable tumor from radiation necrosis of brain metastases after SRS. Method: Multiparametric contrast-enhanced T1- and T2-weighted imaging, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and cerebral blood volume (CBV) were obtained from 52 patients with 69 metastases, showing enlarging enhancing masses after SRS. Voxel-wise clustering identified three structural MRI habitats (enhancing, solid low-enhancing, and nonviable) and three physiologic MRI habitats (hypervascular cellular, hypovascular cellular, and nonviable). Habitat-based predictors for viable tumor or radiation necrosis were identified by logistic regression. Performance was validated using the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristics curve in an independent dataset with 24 patients. Results: None of the physiologic MRI habitats was indicative of viable tumor. Viable tumor was predicted by a high-volume fraction of solid low-enhancing habitat (low T2-weighted and low CE-T1-weighted values; odds ratio [OR] 1.74, p <.001) and a low-volume fraction of nonviable tissue habitat (high T2-weighted and low CE-T1-weighted values; OR 0.55, p <.001). Combined structural MRI habitats yielded good discriminatory ability in both development (AUC 0.85, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.77–0.94) and validation sets (AUC 0.86, 95% CI:0.70–0.99), outperforming single ADC (AUC 0.64) and CBV (AUC 0.58) values. The site of progression matched with the solid low-enhancing habitat (72%, 8/11). Conclusion: Solid low-enhancing and nonviable tissue habitats on structural MRI can help to localize viable tumor in patients with brain metastases after SRS. Objectives: (1) To compare low-contrast detectability of a deep learning-based denoising algorithm (DLA) with ADMIRE and FBP, and (2) to compare image quality parameters of DLA with those of reconstruction methods from two different CT vendors (ADMIRE, IMR, and FBP).Materials and Methods: Using abdominal CT images of 100 patients reconstructed via ADMIRE and FBP, we trained DLA by feeding FBP images as input and ADMIRE images as the ground truth. To measure the low-contrast detectability, the randomized repeat scans of Catphan® phantom were performed under various conditions of radiation exposures. Twelve radiologists evaluated the presence/absence of a target on a five-point confidence scale. The multi-reader multi-case area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was calculated, and non-inferiority tests were performed. Using American College of Radiology CT accreditation phantom, contrast-to-noise ratio, target transfer function, noise magnitude, and detectability index (d') of DLA, ADMIRE, IMR, and FBPs were computed.Results: The AUC of DLA in low-contrast detectability was non-inferior to that of ADMIRE (p < .001) and superior to that of FBP (p < .001). DLA improved the image quality in terms of all physical measurements compared to FBPs from both CT vendors and showed profiles of physical measurements similar to those of ADMIRE.Conclusions: The low-contrast detectability of the proposed deep learning-based denoising algorithm was non-inferior to that of ADMIRE and superior to that of FBP. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility of deep learning-based synthetic contrast-enhanced CT (DL-SCE-CT) from nonenhanced CT (NECT) in patients who visited the emergency department (ED) with acute abdominal pain (AAP). We trained an algorithm generating DL-SCE-CT using NECT with paired precontrast/postcontrast images. For clinical application, 353 patients from three institutions who visited the ED with AAP were included. Six reviewers (experienced radiologists, ER1-3; training radiologists, TR1-3) made diagnostic and disposition decisions using NECT alone and then with NECT and DL-SCE-CT together. The radiologists' confidence in decisions was graded using a 5-point scale. The diagnostic accuracy using DL-SCE-CT improved in three radiologists (50%, P = 0.023, 0.012, < 0.001, especially in 2/3 of TRs). The confidence of diagnosis and disposition improved significantly in five radiologists (83.3%, P < 0.001). Particularly, in subgroups with underlying malignancy and miscellaneous medical conditions (MMCs) and in CT-negative cases, more radiologists reported increased confidence in diagnosis (83.3% [5/6], 100.0% [6/6], and 83.3% [5/6], respectively) and disposition (66.7% [4/6], 83.3% [5/6] and 100% [6/6], respectively). In conclusion, DL-SCE-CT enhances the accuracy and confidence of diagnosis and disposition regarding patients with AAP in the ED, especially for less experienced radiologists, in CT-negative cases, and in certain disease subgroups with underlying malignancy and MMCs. During lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF), unintended intraoperative endplate injury (IEPI) can occur and thereafter lead cage subsidence. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of IEPI during LLIF, and its predisposing factors. A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive patients (n = 186; mean age, 70.0 ± 7.6 years) who underwent LLIF at 372 levels. Patient's demographic and surgical data were compared between patients with and without IEPI. Also, the radiographic data of each level were compared between intact and IEPI segments. IEPI was identified at 76 levels (20.4%) in 65 patients. The incidences of IEPI at every 100 consecutive segments were not different. When 372 segments were analyzed independently, sagittal disc angle (DA) in the extended position (4.3° ± 3.6° at IEPI segments vs. 6.4° ± 4.0° at intact segments), the difference between sagittal DA in the extended position and cage angle (− 2.2° ± 4.0° vs. 0.0° ± 3.9°), and the difference between preoperative disc height and cage height (− 5.4 mm ± 2.4 mm vs. − 4.7 mm ± 2.0 mm) were different significantly. Also, endplate sclerosis was more common at intact segments than IEPI segments (33.2% vs. 17.3%). Multivariate analysis showed that male sex (odds ratio [OR] 0.160; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.036–0.704), endplate sclerosis (OR 3.307; 95% CI 1.450–8.480), and sagittal DA in the extended position (OR 0.674; 95% CI 0.541–0.840) were significant associated factors for IEPI. IEPI was correlated not with surgeon's experience, but with patient factors, such as sex, preoperative disc angle, and endplate sclerosis. The selective Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor poseltinib has been shown to inhibit the BCR signal transduction pathway and cytokine production in B cells (Park et al.Arthritis Res. Ther.18, 91, https://doi.org/10.1186/s13075-016-0988-z, 2016). This study describes the translation of nonclinical research studies to a phase I clinical trial in healthy volunteers in which pharmacokinetics (PKs) and pharmacodynamics (PDs) were evaluated for dose determination. The BTK protein kinase inhibitory effects of poseltinib in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and in rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) were evaluated. High-dimensional phosphorylation analysis was conducted on human immune cells such as B cells, CD8 + memory cells, CD4 + memory cells, NK cells, neutrophils, and monocytes, to map the impact of poseltinib on BTK/PLC and AKT signaling pathways. PK and PD profiles were evaluated in a first-in-human study in healthy donors, and a PK/PD model was established based on BTK occupancy. Poseltinib bound to the BTK protein and modulated BTK phosphorylation in human PBMCs. High-dimensional phosphorylation analysis of 94 nodes showed that poseltinib had the highest impact on anti-IgM + CD40L stimulated B cells, however, lower impacts on anti-CD3/CD-28 stimulated T cells, IL-2 stimulated CD4 + T cells and NK cells, M-CSF stimulated monocytes, or LPS-induced granulocytes. In anti-IgM + CD40L stimulated B cells, poseltinib inhibited the phosphorylation of BTK, AKT, and PLCγ2. Moreover, poseltinib dose dependently improved arthritis disease severity in CIA rat model. In a clinical phase I trial for healthy volunteers, poseltinib exhibited dose-dependent and persistent BTK occupancy in PBMCs of all poseltinib-administrated patients in the study. More than 80% of BTK occupancy at 40 mg dosing was maintained for up to 48 h after the first dose. A first-in-human healthy volunteer study of poseltinib established target engagement with circulating BTK protein. Desirable PK and PD properties were observed, and a modeling approach was used for rational dose selection for subsequent trials. Poseltinib was confirmed as a potential BTK inhibitor for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Purpose: As per the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on the classification of central nervous system tumors, solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) and hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) constitute a single disease entity, known as SFT/HPC. This study provides a clinical analysis of these tumors and describes the treatment outcomes of SFT/HPCs. Methods: This retrospective study included 76 patients with histopathologically proven SFT/HPC. Reclassification according to the 2016 WHO guideline was done for patients who were diagnosed with SFT or HPC based on the 2007 WHO classification. Recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated for all patients and subgroups. Results: The median follow-up period was 77.9 months. The median RFS and OS were 126.5 and 136.8 months, respectively. The 1-, 5-, 10-, and 15-year RFS rates were 93%, 72%, 40%, and 40%, respectively. The 1-, 5-, 10- and 15-year OS rates were 97%, 89%, 54%, and 35%, respectively. In multivariable analyses, stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS; p = 0.009, hazard ratio [HR] 6.986), female sex (p = 0.023, HR 1.76), and age over 45 (p = 0.037, HR 2.74) were associated with shorter RFS. Patients who underwent SRS as initial treatment had a shorter OS than that of patients who underwent primary resection (p < 0.001, HR 12.86). Conclusions: High-grade tumors tended to have worse OS and occur extracranial metastases earlier than low-grade tumors. The median RFS was not different between grade II and III tumors. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with various major adverse cardiac events such as ischemic stroke, heart failure, and increased overall mortality. However, its association with lethal ventricular arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular flutter (VFL), and ventricular fibrillation (VF) is controversial. We conducted this study to determine whether AF can increase the risk of VT, VFL, and VF. We utilized the Korean National Health Insurance Service database for this nationwide population-based study. This study enrolled people who underwent a nationwide health screen in 2009 for whom clinical follow-up data were available until December 2018. Primary outcome endpoint was the occurrence of VT, VFL, or VF in people who were and were not diagnosed with new-onset AF in 2009. We analyzed a total of 9,751,705 people. In 2009, 12,689 people were diagnosed with new-onset AF (AF group). The incidence (events per 1000 person-years of follow-up) of VT, VFL, and VF was 2.472 and 0.282 in the AF and non-AF groups, respectively. After adjustment for covariates, new-onset AF was associated with 4.6-fold increased risk (p < 0.001) of VT, VFL, and VF over 10 years of follow-up. The risk of VT, VFL, and VF was even higher if identification of AF was based on intensified criteria (≥ 2 outpatient records or ≥ 1 inpatient record; hazard ratio = 5.221; p < 0.001). In conclusion, the incidence of VT, VFL, and VF was significantly increased in people with new-onset AF. The potential risk of suffering lethal ventricular arrhythmia in people with AF should be considered in clinical practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Tissue conductivity measurements made with electrical properties tomography (EPT) can be used to define temporal changes in tissue habitats on longitudinal multiparametric MRI. We aimed to demonstrate the added insights for identifying tumor habitats obtained by including EPT with diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MRI, and to evaluate the use of these tumor habitats for determining tumor treatment response in post-treatment glioblastoma. Methods: Tumor habitats were developed from EPT, diffusion-weighted, and perfusion-weighted MRI in 60 patients with glioblastoma who underwent concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Voxels from EPT, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and cerebral blood volume (CBV) maps were clustered into habitats, and each habitat was serially examined to assess its temporal change. The usefulness of temporal changes in tumor habitats for diagnosing tumor progression and treatment-related change was investigated using logistic regression. The performance of significant predictors was measured using the area under the curve (AUC) from receiver-operating-characteristics analysis with 1000-fold bootstrapping. Results: Five tumor habitats were identified, and of these, the hypervascular cellular habitat (odds ratio [OR] 5.45; 95% CI, 1.75–31.42; p =.02), hypovascular low conductivity habitat (OR 2.00; 95% CI, 1.45–3.05; p <.001), and hypovascular intermediate habitat (OR 1.57; 95% CI, 1.18–2.30; p =.006) were predictive of tumor progression. Low EPT and low CBV reflected a unique hypovascular low conductivity habitat that showed the highest diagnostic performance (AUC 0.86; 95% CI, 0.76–0.96). The combined habitats showed high performance (AUC 0.90; 95% CI, 0.82–0.98) in the differentiation of tumor progression from treatment-related change. Conclusion: EPT reveals low conductivity habitats that can improve the diagnosis of tumor progression in post-treatment glioblastoma.
