Young immature granule cells (imGCs) appear via adult neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). In comparison to mature GCs (mGCs) (born during development), the imGCs exhibit two competing distinct properties such as high excitability (increasing activation degree) and low excitatory innervation (reducing activation degree). We develop a spiking neural network for the DG, incorporating both the mGCs and the imGCs. The mGCs are well known to perform "pattern separation" (i.e., a process of transforming similar input patterns into less similar output patterns) to facilitate pattern storage in the hippocampal CA3. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the young imGCs on pattern separation of the mGCs. The pattern separation efficacy (PSE) of the mGCs is found to vary through competition between high excitability and low excitatory innervation of the imGCs. Their PSE becomes enhanced (worsened) when the effect of high excitability is higher (lower) than the effect of low excitatory innervation. In contrast to the mGCs, the imGCs are found to perform "pattern integration" (i.e., making association between dissimilar patterns). Finally, we speculate that memory resolution in the hippocampal CA3 might be optimally maximized via mixed cooperative encoding through pattern separation and pattern integration. This retrospective study aimed to compare objective/subjective torsion and other clinical characteristics of patients with acquired trochlear nerve palsy. This study included 82 consecutive patients who were diagnosed with acquired fourth cranial nerve palsy between 2014 and 2021 and who were followed up for ≥ 6 months. The etiologies, ocular deviation, objective and subjective torsions were reviewed. The etiologies were classified as ischemic, traumatic, brain lesion, idiopathic, or other. The patients were classified into two groups according to the recovery state: full recovery and partial/no-recovery. We compared the torsion and clinical features based on the etiology and recovery state. The average age was 59.1 ± 11.1 years, and 58 (71.0%) of the patients were male. The most common cause was ischemic (n = 49, 59.7%) and other common causes included traumatic (n = 16, 19.5%), brain lesion (n = 8, 9.8%), idiopathic (n = 5, 6.1%) and others (n = 4, 4.9%). Of the 82 patients, 56 (68.3%) were assigned to the full recovery group, and 26 (31.7%) were assigned to the partial/no-recovery group. The average age and number of patients with ischemic causes of palsy were greater in the full recovery group (p = 0.026 and p < 0.000, respectively). The vertical deviation angle, tilted angle on the Lancaster red-green test (LRGT), proportion of patients who experienced subjective torsion on the LRGT, and head tilt were smaller in the full recovery group (p = 0.037, 0.042, 0.045, and 0.006, respectively). Ischemic trochlear nerve palsy, advanced age, a small deviation angle at the primary position, and few cases of excyclotorsion on LRGT were characteristic of the full recovery group of acquired unilateral trochlear nerve palsy patients. Background: The primary objective of this study was to assess the clinical effectiveness of fused images obtained from single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and facial computed tomography (CT) for evaluating degenerative changes in the mandibular condylar head. This assessment was accomplished by comparing the Technetium-99 m methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) uptake ratio with the results of clinical and radiographic findings. Methods: The study included 17 patients (3 males and 14 females) with suspected osteoarthritis of the mandibular condyle, totaling 34 temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Based on clinical and radiographic examinations, the TMJs were categorized into four groups: normal (group N), internal derangement (group ID), osteoarthritis (group OA), and osteoarthritis sequelae (group OAseq). For each patient, bone SPECT and facial CT scans were registered and reconstructed to create fused SPECT/CT images. The 99mTc-MDP uptake levels in the TMJs were statistically compared among the four groups. Results: The 99mTc-MDP uptake ratio showed a gradual increase in the order of the following: group N, group OAseq, group ID, and group OA. There was a significant difference observed among groups (p = 0.003), mainly driven by the disparity between group OA and both group N (p < 0.001) and group OAseq (p = 0.048). Conclusion: Fused SPECT/CT image can be an effective tool for evaluating degenerative changes in the mandibular condylar head. The technique demonstrated the ability to differentiate between normal TMJs and those with internal derangement, osteoarthritis, or osteoarthritis sequelae. Dysphagia and feeding tube dependency commonly occur in patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer (LHC) during and after treatment, often leading to poor functional outcomes. Therefore, we examined the factors related to feeding tube dependency among advanced-stage LHC patients undergoing curative surgery. This study included 69 consecutive patients who underwent conservative surgery for previously untreated, advanced-stage LHC (squamous cell carcinoma) between 2006 and 2016. Persistent feeding tube dependency was defined as 1 year or more after treatment completion. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with reactive prolonged and persistent feeding tube dependency. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to determine the association between feeding tube dependency and survival. None of the study patients had a prophylactic feeding tube, but 15 (21.7%) patients had reactive feeding tube placement for 3 months or more. A total of 9 (13.0%) patients had persistent feeding tube dependency. Univariate analysis showed that age, tracheostomy, and common terminology criteria for adverse events (CTCAE) ≥ 3 were significantly associated with reactive prolonged and persistent feeding tube dependency (all P < 0.05). In the multivariate analysis, advanced age and CTCAE ≥ 3 remained the independent factors of reactive prolonged and persistent feeding tube dependency (all P < 0.05). Feeding tube dependency was not associated with overall survival or disease-free survival (P > 0.1). Feeding tube dependency might be related to clinical factors, such as age and severe adverse events, in the patients undergoing function-preserving surgery for advanced-stage LHC. We study the disynaptic effect of the hilar cells on pattern separation in a spiking neural network of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). The principal granule cells (GCs) in the DG perform pattern separation, transforming similar input patterns into less-similar output patterns. In our DG network, the hilus consists of excitatory mossy cells (MCs) and inhibitory HIPP (hilar perforant path-associated) cells. Here, we consider the disynaptic effects of the MCs and the HIPP cells on the GCs, mediated by the inhibitory basket cells (BCs) in the granular layer; MC → BC → GC and HIPP → BC → GC. The MCs provide disynaptic inhibitory input (mediated by the intermediate BCs) to the GCs, which decreases the firing activity of the GCs. On the other hand, the HIPP cells disinhibit the intermediate BCs, which leads to increasing the firing activity of the GCs. In this way, the disynaptic effects of the MCs and the HIPP cells are opposite. We investigate change in the pattern separation efficacy by varying the synaptic strength K (BC , X) [from the pre-synaptic X (= MC or HIPP) to the post-synaptic BC]. Thus, sparsity for the firing activity of the GCs is found to improve the efficacy of pattern separation, and hence the disynaptic effects of the MCs and the HIPP cells on the pattern separation become opposite ones. In the combined case when simultaneously changing both K (BC , MC) and K (BC , HIPP) , as a result of balance between the two competing disynaptic effects of the MCs and the HIPP cells, the efficacy of pattern separation is found to become the highest at their original default values where the activation degree of the GCs is the lowest. We also note that, while the GCs perform pattern separation, sparsely synchronized rhythm is found to appear in the population of the GCs. Hence, we examine quantitative association between population and individual firing behaviors in the sparsely synchronized rhythm and pattern separation. They are found to be strongly correlated. Patients with intermittent exotropia (IXT) have a wide range of binocular deficits. This study aims to evaluate the effect of ptosis on the binocular function of patients with IXT. Clinical records of 45 IXT patients with congenital ptosis (IXT-ptosis group) and 58 age-matched IXT patients without ptosis (IXT only group) who presented for eye examination between January 2017 and June 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with amblyopia were excluded to rule out the effects of visual acuity on binocularity. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), the magnitude of exodeviation at distance and at near, stereopsis, and office-based control scores at the first visit were reviewed. The binocular functions of the two groups were compared. The mean ± SD age of the overall patients was 6.6 ± 2.7 years. There were no significant differences in the distribution of age, sex, spherical equivalent refraction, or BCVA between the two groups (all p > 0.05). Although the office-based control scores at distance and near were slightly worse in the IXT-ptosis group, the differences were not statistically significant (at distance, 2.8 ± 1.87 vs. 2.2 ± 1.13, p = 0.08; at near, 1.8 ± 0.67 vs. 1.6 ± 0.74, p = 0.11). Furthermore, the IXT-ptosis group had worse stereopsis at distance (p = 0.01). There were no significant differences between the two groups in near stereopsis or exodeviation magnitude (p > 0.05). A larger proportion of patients had suppression on the Bagolini test in the IXT-ptosis group than in the IXT-only group (p = 0.04). The IXT-ptosis group had worse distance stereoacuity, and a larger proportion of patients had suppression on the Bagolini test than the IXT only group. Purpose: Studies regarding the best strategy to determine appropriate femoral component rotation during bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in wind swept deformities (WSD) are very limited. The purpose of this study was (1) to evaluate whether femoral rotational profiles differ between varus and valgus osteoarthritic knees in WSD and (2) to analyze the correlation between femoral rotational profiles and coronal radiologic parameters. Methods: A total of 40 patients who were diagnosed with bilateral knee osteoarthritis with WSD between January 2010 and December 2020 at a single institution were retrospectively reviewed. On axial computed tomography scans, femoral rotational profile parameters such as the clinical transepicondylar axis (cTEA) and anterior–posterior (AP) axis were compared between valgus and varus osteoarthritic knees. In standing full-limb AP radiographs, coronal radiographic parameters including hip–knee–ankle angle (HKA), valgus correction angle (VCA), lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), and joint line convergence angle (JLCA) were measured in both knees. The correlation between the varus-valgus cTEA difference, and differences in coronal radiologic parameters was analyzed. Results: In valgus osteoarthritic knees, cTEA was significantly increased compared to varus osteoarthritic knees by 1.5° (valgus: 7.65° ± 1.82°, varus: 6.15° ± 1.58°, p < 0.001). All coronal radiologic parameters, including HKA, LDFA, MPTA, JLCA, and VCA, were significantly different between valgus and varus knees. In correlation analysis, the varus-valgus cTEA difference was significantly correlated with LDFA (r = 0.365, p = 0.021), MPTA (r = 0.442, p = 0.004), and HKA differences (r = 0.693, p < 0.001), with the HKA difference showing the strongest correlation with the cTEA difference. Conclusion: In bilateral knee osteoarthritis with WSD, valgus knees showed significantly increased cTEA compared to varus knees, and the cTEA difference positively correlated with the HKA difference between valgus and varus knees. To determine the optimal femoral component rotation during TKA in WSD, assessment of cTEA with pre-operative CT scans or careful intra-operative measurement is recommended, especially in patients with large HKA difference. We investigate population and individual firing behaviors in sparsely synchronized rhythms (SSRs) in a spiking neural network of the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). The main encoding granule cells (GCs) are grouped into lamellar clusters. In each GC cluster, there is one inhibitory (I) basket cell (BC) along with excitatory (E) GCs, and they form the E-I loop. Winner-take-all competition, leading to sparse activation of the GCs, occurs in each GC cluster. Such sparsity has been thought to enhance pattern separation performed in the DG. During the winner-take-all competition, SSRs are found to appear in each population of the GCs and the BCs through interaction of excitation of the GCs with inhibition of the BCs. Sparsely synchronized spiking stripes appear successively with the population frequency f p (= 13.1 Hz) in the raster plots of spikes. We also note that excitatory hilar mossy cells (MCs) control the firing activity of the GC-BC loop by providing excitation to both the GCs and the BCs. SSR also appears in the population of MCs via interaction with the GCs (i.e., GC-MC loop). Population behaviors in the SSRs are quantitatively characterized in terms of the synchronization measures. In addition, we investigate individual firing activity of GCs, BCs, and MCs in the SSRs. Individual GCs exhibit random spike skipping, leading to a multi-peaked inter-spike-interval histogram, which is well characterized in terms of the random phase-locking degree. In this case, population-averaged mean-firing-rate (MFR) < f i (GC) > is less than the population frequency f p . On the other hand, both BCs and MCs show "intrastripe" burstings within stripes, together with random spike skipping. Thus, the population-averaged MFR ⟨ f i (X) ⟩ ( X = MC and BC) is larger than f p , in contrast to the case of the GCs. MC loss may occur during epileptogenesis. With decreasing the fraction of the MCs, changes in the population and individual firings in the SSRs are also studied. To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with homonymous hemianopia (HH). The study compared the QoL in 32 patients with HH and 33 patients with monocular blindness. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and visual field test were investigated. The National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI VFQ-25) and independent mobility questionnaires (IMQs) were used to assess their perceived visual and physical functioning abilities. The results of QoL questionnaires were compared in two groups. The mean deviation (MD) in the better eye was significantly lower in the HH group than in the monocular blindness group. The composite scores of NEI-VFQ and IMQs were significantly lower in the HH patients than in the monocular blindness patients. The driving-related score was significantly lower in patients with right hemianopsia than in those with left hemianopsia. The outdoor activity-related score was significantly lower in patients aged less than 55 years than in patients aged 55 years and more. Homonymous hemianopia had a negative impact on patients' QoL by limiting their vision related activities compared to monocular blindness. Background: Thyroid lobectomy is recommended as the primary treatment for low-risk thyroid cancer. However, recurrence and hypothyroidism may develop after lobectomy, necessitating thyroid hormone supplementation. The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines recommended post-lobectomy thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression. This study examined the need for TSH suppression and recurrence after lobectomy for unilateral papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Methods: This study involved 369 patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy and ipsilateral central neck dissection for PTC between 2007 and 2015. Thyroid function tests were performed before and regularly after lobectomy. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to find factors predictive of the post-lobectomy need for TSH suppression that was defined by the 2015 ATA guidelines. Results: Serum TSH concentrations gradually increased after lobectomy: proportions with TSH >2 mIU/L at post-lobectomy 1, 3–6, 12, and 24 months were found in 77.0%, 82.3%, 66.7%, and 59.9%, respectively. After lobectomy, 168 (45.5%) patients received levothyroxine (T4) supplementation. Multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that pre-TSH level >2 mIU/L was the sole independent variable predictive of the need for post-lobectomy TSH suppression (P = 0.003). During the median follow-up of 72 months, recurrence was found in 4 (1.1%) patients who never received T4 supplementation and had post-lobectomy TSH levels >2 mIU/L. Conclusions: Our data show that thyroid lobectomy for unilateral PTC is associated with a low recurrence rate, but a significant risk of hypothyroidism. We consider the Pavlovian eyeblink conditioning (EBC) via repeated presentation of paired conditioned stimulus (tone) and unconditioned stimulus (US; airpuff). In an effective cerebellar ring network, we change the connection probability p c from Golgi to granule (GR) cells, and make a dynamical classification of various firing patterns of the GR cells. Individual GR cells are thus found to show various well- and ill-matched firing patterns relative to the US timing signal. Then, these variously-recoded signals are fed into the Purkinje cells (PCs) through the parallel-fibers (PFs). Based on such unique dynamical classification of various firing patterns, we make intensive investigations on the influence of various temporal recoding (i.e., firing patterns) of the GR cells on the synaptic plasticity of the PF-PC synapses and the subsequent learning process for the EBC. We first note that the variously-recoded PF signals are effectively depressed by the (error-teaching) instructor climbing-fiber (CF) signals from the inferior olive neuron. In the case of well-matched PF signals, they are strongly depressed through strong long-term depression (LTD) by the instructor CF signals due to good association between the in-phase PF and the instructor CF signals. On the other hand, practically no LTD occurs for the ill-matched PF signals because most of them have no association with the instructor CF signals. This kind of "effective" depression at the PF-PC synapses coordinates firings of PCs effectively, which then makes effective inhibitory coordination on the cerebellar nucleus neuron [which elicits conditioned response (CR; eyeblink)]. When the learning trial passes a threshold, acquisition of CR begins. In this case, the timing degree T d of CR becomes good due to presence of the ill-matched firing group which plays a role of protection barrier for the timing. With further increase in the number of trials, strength S of CR (corresponding to the amplitude of eyelid closure) increases due to strong LTD in the well-matched firing group, while its timing degree T d decreases. In this way, the well- and the ill-matched firing groups play their own roles for the strength and the timing of CR, respectively. Thus, with increasing the number of learning trials, the (overall) learning efficiency degree L e (taking into consideration both timing and strength of CR) for the CR is increased, and eventually it becomes saturated. Finally, we also discuss dependence of the variety degree for firing patterns of the GR cells and the saturated learning efficiency degree L e of the CR on p c and their relations. This study aims to quantitatively investigate the optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) findings of capillary congestion and its association with macular edema (ME) recurrence in chronic branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 115 consecutive patients with major ischemic BRVO who reached stable macula (without ME for two consecutive visits) at baseline (the first visit within the stable period). All patients were classified into a recurrence or non-recurrence groups depending on ME recurrence. Capillary congestion of deep capillary plexuses (DCP-C) and other abnormal capillary lesions were segmented, and their areas, vascular densities, and mean retinal thicknesses (MRT) were calculated. The main outcomes were differences between the two groups and risk factors for recurrence among baseline and OCTA parameters. A total of 76 eyes were included, of which 22 (28.9%) recurred. DCP-C existed in all eyes at baseline. MRT of DCP-C (p = 0.006) was greater in the recurrence group. Greater MRT of DCP-C (OR: 1.044; p = 0.002) and more frequent intravitreal injections (OR: 1.803; p < 0.001) were associated with a higher risk of relapsing ME. Purpose: To analyze the factors influencing visual field recovery in patients with pituitary adenoma following surgical treatment. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 144 eyes of 72 patients with pituitary adenoma who had been followed up for more than 6 months following surgery between January 2016 and December 2019. Pre and postoperative visual acuity, visual field test and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness were investigated. We defined recovery of visual field defects as being an improvement in mean deviation (MD) of 2 dB or more. Result: The average age of the 72 patients (144 eyes) was 51.94 ± 14.69 years, making for 37 patients in the recovery group and 35 patients in the non-recovery group. Preoperative MD, pattern standard deviation (PSD), and visual field indexes (VFI) were negatively correlated to postoperative MD, PSD and VFI changes and positively correlated to postoperative MD, PSD, and VFI values. Using multiple regression analysis, a shorter duration of symptoms (Odds ratio [OR], 0.990; p = 0.033), higher preoperative MD values (OR, 0.871; p = 0.025), and thicker temporal RNFL (OR, 1.068; p = 0.048) were associated with a visual field recovery following surgery. Conclusions: The prognosis for visual field recovery is favorable for patients who have a short period from symptom onset to surgery, a higher MD value of preoperative VF, and a thicker peripapillary temporal RNFL thickness. Therefore, the preoperative MD, temporal RNFL thickness, and the symptom period can be predictive variables affecting postoperative visual field recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCC) can spread to the neck without apparent lymphadenopathy. Pretreatment detection or prediction of occult metastasis might contribute to proper management of clinically node-negative (cN0) OCC. We examined the role of tumour quantitative 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) measurements for predicting OCC occult metastasis and survival. Methods: This study included 130 cN0 OCC patients who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT scanning and subsequent curative surgery and neck dissection. Maximum, peak, and mean standardized uptake value (SUVmax, SUVpeak, and SUVmean), metabolic tumour volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were measured on pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT. Binary logistic regression was used to identify factors predicting occult cervical metastasis. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression were used to find factors associated with overall survival (OS). Results: Pathological cervical metastasis (pN +) was found in 29 (22.3%) patients. Age, tumour differentiation, lymphovascular invasion, and T classification were significantly associated with pN + (all P < 0.05). After adjustment for these factors, MTV and TLG independently predicted pN + (P < 0.05). Invasion depth, lymphovascular invasion, T and N classifications, and overall TNM stage were significantly associated with OS. After adjustment for these factors, SUVmax and TLG independently predicted OS (all P < 0.05). Patients with TLG > 9.3 g had a 5.7-fold increased risk of overall mortality. We consider a two-population network consisting of both inhibitory (I) interneurons and excitatory (E) pyramidal cells. This I–E neuronal network has adaptive dynamic I to E and E to I interpopulation synaptic strengths, governed by interpopulation spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). In previous works without STDPs, fast sparsely synchronized rhythms, related to diverse cognitive functions, were found to appear in a range of noise intensity D for static synaptic strengths. Here, by varying D, we investigate the effect of interpopulation STDPs on fast sparsely synchronized rhythms that emerge in both the I- and the E-populations. Depending on values of D, long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) for population-averaged values of saturated interpopulation synaptic strengths are found to occur. Then, the degree of fast sparse synchronization varies due to effects of LTP and LTD. In a broad region of intermediate D, the degree of good synchronization (with higher synchronization degree) becomes decreased, while in a region of large D, the degree of bad synchronization (with lower synchronization degree) gets increased. Consequently, in each I- or E-population, the synchronization degree becomes nearly the same in a wide range of D (including both the intermediate and the large D regions). This kind of "equalization effect" is found to occur via cooperative interplay between the average occupation and pacing degrees of spikes (i.e., the average fraction of firing neurons and the average degree of phase coherence between spikes in each synchronized stripe of spikes in the raster plot of spikes) in fast sparsely synchronized rhythms. Finally, emergences of LTP and LTD of interpopulation synaptic strengths (leading to occurrence of equalization effect) are intensively investigated via a microscopic method based on the distributions of time delays between the pre- and the post-synaptic spike times. A 2-year field experiment was carried out on rice (Oryza sativa, Japonica type) cultivation in South Korea. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of application of liquid pig manure on biomass production and nutrient supply of green barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) green manure crops and to evaluate the effect of nutrients supplied from these sources on rice yield and soil quality in a rice–green manure crop rotation system. Over the 2-year study period, application of liquid pig manure increased biomass production of green manure crops of barley and hairy vetch by more than 216% and 135%, respectively, compared with without liquid pig manure. Moreover, the results showed that the application of liquid pig manure significantly increased the nutrient supply levels in green barley– and hairy vetch–treated areas. Positive effects related to nutrient supply in green barley and hairy vetch treated with liquid pig manure were observed on rice yield, soil chemical characteristics, and microbial biomass C and N contents. In conclusion, the addition of liquid pig manure systems using green manure crops of green barley and hairy vetch improved rice productivity and soil quality. It is suggested that these combinations can be effective in developing resource cycling agriculture in a rice–green manure crop rotation system as it reduces the need for inorganic fertilizer. Purpose: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is generally slow growing but has highly metastatic potential to distant organs. Several factors and biomarkers are associated with metastasis and treatment outcomes, although further definition is needed. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the risk factors for survival and distant metastasis in patients with head and neck AdCC. Methods: This study included 125 patients with previously untreated AdCC who underwent primary surgery with or without radiotherapy in our tertiary referral centre. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were used to identify risk factors associated with overall survival (OS), cause-specific survival (CSS), disease-free survival (DFS), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). Factors associated with OS in patients with distant metastasis were separately analysed. Results: During a median follow-up of 9.8 years (range 3.0–22.6 years), 58 patients (46.4%) had distant metastasis and 29 (23.2%) died of disease. Multivariate analyses showed that lymphovascular invasion, lymph node metastasis, and distant metastasis were independent factors of OS and CSS outcomes (all P < 0.05). The T classification and extranodal extension were independent factors of DFS and DMFS outcomes (P < 0.05). After patients presented with distant metastasis, the median survival was 5.8 years. Multivariate analyses showed that extranodal extension and regional recurrence were independent factors of survival after occurrence of distant metastasis (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Several clinicopathological factors can predict distant metastasis and survival of patients with AdCC treated with primary surgery. Purpose: Cervical metastasis from unknown primary (CUP) is commonly classified as an advanced overall stage. P16 or human papillomavirus (HPV) positivity in metastatic lymph nodes (LN) might be associated with a favorable survival outcome of CUP. Therefore, we evaluated the prognostic values of p16 immuno-positivity in LN and other clinicopathological factors in patients with squamous cell carcinoma CUP (SCCUP). Methods: This study involved 83 patients who underwent therapeutic neck dissection and panendoscopic examination and biopsy for suspected CUP. P16 immunostaining and HPV typing in LN were performed in 56 patients. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were used to identify factors associated with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results: Postoperatively, primary tumors (PT) were found in 32 (38.6%) patients, mainly (90.6%) in the oropharynx, and not found in 51 (61.4%) patients. The clinicopathological data (except for histological grade) and 5-year OS and DFS rates did not significantly differ between patients with and without PT identification (all P > 0.05). P16 positivity was associated with favorable OS and DFS outcomes in the patients with PT (P < 0.05) but not in those without PT (P > 0.1). Multivariate analyses showed that age (> 60 years) and LN ratio (≥ 0.1) were the independent predictors of OS and DFS outcomes (all P < 0.05). P16 positivity or other factors were not independent factors. Conclusion: Age and LN ratio are significant risk factors of survival and recurrence after primary surgery for SCCUP. This study investigated the offset effect between green manure (GM) application and plastic film mulching (PFM) on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock change during maize cultivation. Within PFM and no-mulching treatments, three different fertilization sub-treatments were applied: (a) chemical fertilizer, (b) barley and (c) hairy vetch. The SOC balance were evaluated by analyzing the net ecosystem carbon budget (NECB). The results showed that the NECB value was negative during maize cultivation regardless of mulching or fertilization condition, indicated SOC loss. The PFM increased maize yield (P < 0.001) by improved soil moisture and temperature. Crop growth was enhanced under PFM relative to no mulching by 23–26%, 16–25% and 1–8% in the sub-treatments, respectively. However, PFM significantly increased carbon losses by 26–29%, 103–107% and 60–62% over no mulching in each fertilization, respectively (P < 0.001). the temperature sensitivity of CO2–C loss was 52–70% higher in PFM than that in no mulching. Accordingly, the NECB was 1.3, 5.6 and 3.0 times lower with PFM relative to the no-mulching value in the three fertilization, respectively. Under no mulching, GM application reduced SOC loss by 33–59% compared with NPK, while under PFM, it accelerated SOC loss by 8–48%. Barley showed the smallest NECB decrease (− 1.0 Mg C ha−1) under no mulching and the largest NECB decrease (− 5.7 Mg C ha−1) under PFM. The findings indicate that GM application is not enough to sustain SOC stock under PFM and suggest that the additional recycling of crop residue, such as maize stover, is necessary to increase the soil C stock. We consider a scale-free network of inhibitory Hindmarsh–Rose (HR) bursting neurons, and make a computational study on coupling-induced cluster burst synchronization by varying the average coupling strength J 0 . For sufficiently small J 0 , non-cluster desynchronized states exist. However, when passing a critical point J c ∗ (≃ 0.16) , the whole population is segregated into 3 clusters via a constructive role of synaptic inhibition to stimulate dynamical clustering between individual burstings, and thus 3-cluster desynchronized states appear. As J 0 is further increased and passes a lower threshold J l ∗ (≃ 0.78) , a transition to 3-cluster burst synchronization occurs due to another constructive role of synaptic inhibition to favor population synchronization. In this case, HR neurons in each cluster make burstings every 3rd cycle of the instantaneous burst rate R w (t) of the whole population, and exhibit burst synchronization. However, as J 0 passes an intermediate threshold J m ∗ (≃ 5.2) , HR neurons fire burstings intermittently at a 4th cycle of R w (t) via burst skipping rather than at its 3rd cycle, and hence they begin to make intermittent hoppings between the 3 clusters. Due to such intermittent intercluster hoppings via burst skippings, the 3 clusters become broken up (i.e., the 3 clusters are integrated into a single one). However, in spite of such break-up (i.e., disappearance) of the 3-cluster states, (non-cluster) burst synchronization persists in the whole population, which is well visualized in the raster plot of burst onset times where bursting stripes (composed of burst onset times and indicating burst synchronization) appear successively. With further increase in J 0 , intercluster hoppings are intensified, and bursting stripes also become dispersed more and more due to a destructive role of synaptic inhibition to spoil the burst synchronization. Eventually, when passing a higher threshold J h ∗ (≃ 17.8) a transition to desynchronization occurs via complete overlap between the bursting stripes. Purpose: Subclinical lymph node (LN) metastasis is associated with poor survival outcome in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCC), which alleges elective neck LN dissection. Preoperative detection of metastatic LNs may improve prognosis and proper management of OCC. We examined the clinical usefulness of fluorine 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) for the detection of occult neck LN metastasis in OCC patients in comparison with conventional CT/magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Methods: A total of 178 OCC patients with negative neck palpation findings were assessed prospectively with 18F-FDG PET/CT and CT/MR imaging. Histopathological analyses of neck dissection samples served as reference. Diagnostic values of 18F-FDG PET/CT versus CT/MR imaging were compared with the McNemar test and logistic regression with generalized estimating equations. Results: Forty-two patients (23.6%) had metastasis in 44 sides and 58 levels of the neck. The sensitivity for detection of occult metastasis was higher for 18F-FDG PET/CT than that for CT/MR imaging on a per-patient (69.1% vs 35.7%), per-side (70.5% vs 36.4%), and per-level (62.1% vs 29.3%) basis (all P ≤ 0.001). However, the specificity for metastatic detection was higher for CT/MR imaging than that for 18F-FDG PET/CT (all P < 0.005). 18F-FDG PET/CT improved detection of occult metastasis up to 33.4% in these patients compared to CT/MR imaging. Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between gender-specific and obesity-related airway anatomy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by using cephalometric analyses. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 206 patients with suspected OSA undergoing polysomnography and anthropometric measurements such as body mass index, neck circumference, and waist-hip ratio. We checked lateral cephalometry to measure tissue landmarks including angle from A point to nasion to B point (ANB), soft palate length (SPL), soft palate thickness (SPT), retropalatal space (RPS), retrolingual space (RLS), and mandibular plane to hyoid (MPH). Results: Male with OSA showed significantly increased SPL (P =.006) compared with controls. SPL and MPH had significant correlation with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and central obesity. Female with OSA showed significantly increased ANB (P =.013) and SPT (P =.004) compared with controls. The receiver operating characteristic curves revealed that SPT in male and ANB and SPT in female were significant in model 1 (AHI ≥ 5) and model 2 (AHI ≥ 15). MPH was also significant for male in model 2. Purpose: Metastatic lymph node (LN) burden is one of the most important prognosticators in human solid cancers, but has rarely been examined in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal cancers (LHC). We evaluated the nodal factors predictive of recurrence and survival in patients with LHC. Methods: This study included 141 consecutive patients who underwent primary surgery and neck dissection for previously untreated LHC at our tertiary referral centre. Nodal factors included the presence of pathological LN metastasis, number of positive LNs, LN ratio, and extra-nodal extension (ENE). Our proposed N classification was analysed by recursive partitioning analysis and compared with the AJCC and other N classifications using the c-index. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were used to define significant predictors of post-treatment disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: Of the 141 patients, 66 (46.8%) had positive LNs, and 27 (19.1%) had ENE. In multivariate analyses, the number of positive LNs was strongly associated with DFS and OS outcomes (P < 0.01). Our new N classification was proposed with four categories, such as N0 (0 LN +), N1 (1 LN +), N2 (2–4 LN + or ENE) and N3 (≥ 5 LN +). The C-index of our new N classification improved the OS prediction (0.718) compared with the AJCC and the other N classifications (0.704–0.713). Conclusion: Metastatic LN burden is an important predictor of survival in patients with LHC. Purpose: Submandibular gland (SMG) carcinoma has an unfavorable clinical course and a low survival rate. Specific tumor and nodal findings might help predict posttreatment recurrence and survival in SMG carcinoma patients. This study evaluated factors predictive of posttreatment recurrence and survival in SMG carcinoma patients. Methods: This study enrolled 99 consecutive patients with previously untreated SMG carcinoma. All patients underwent tumor and metastatic lymph node resection along with or without radiation/chemo-radiation. The predictive clinical and pathological factors for disease-free survival (DFS), distant metastasis–free survival (DMFS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and overall survival (OS) were determined using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses. Results: The median tumor size was 2.7 cm and 53 patients (53.5%) had high-grade tumors. The rates of initial nodal and distant metastasis at initial presentation or follow-up were 45.5% and 42.4%, respectively. The actuarial 5-year DFS, DMFS, DSS, and OS rates were 46.4%, 55.9%, 61.5%, and 59.7%, respectively. The independent factors associated with poor DFS, DMFS, DSS, and OS outcomes (all p < 0.05) were T3–T4 classification and lymph node ratio. A histological high-grade tumor was an independent prognostic factor predictive of poor DMFS, DSS, and OS outcomes (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: A high rate of distant site failure is associated with SMG carcinoma, resulting in a poor survival rate. We are concerned about burst synchronization (BS), related to neural information processes in health and disease, in the Barabási-Albert scale-free network (SFN) composed of inhibitory bursting Hindmarsh-Rose neurons. This inhibitory neuronal population has adaptive dynamic synaptic strengths governed by the inhibitory spike-timing-dependent plasticity (iSTDP). In previous works without considering iSTDP, BS was found to appear in a range of noise intensities for fixed synaptic inhibition strengths. In contrast, in our present work, we take into consideration iSTDP and investigate its effect on BS by varying the noise intensity. Our new main result is to find occurrence of a Matthew effect in inhibitory synaptic plasticity: good BS gets better via LTD, while bad BS get worse via LTP. This kind of Matthew effect in inhibitory synaptic plasticity is in contrast to that in excitatory synaptic plasticity where good (bad) synchronization gets better (worse) via LTP (LTD). We note that, due to inhibition, the roles of LTD and LTP in inhibitory synaptic plasticity are reversed in comparison with those in excitatory synaptic plasticity. Moreover, emergences of LTD and LTP of synaptic inhibition strengths are intensively investigated via a microscopic method based on the distributions of time delays between the pre- and the post-synaptic burst onset times. Finally, in the presence of iSTDP we investigate the effects of network architecture on BS by varying the symmetric attachment degree l∗ and the asymmetry parameter Δl in the SFN. Purpose: High-grade salivary gland carcinoma (SGC) shows a high rate of metastasis and post-treatment recurrence, resulting in poor patient survival. Therefore, we evaluated the utility of pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters in predicting metastasis, tumor progression, and survival of high-grade SGC patients.Methods: This observational study included 75 patients with previously untreated high-grade SGC who underwent pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT scanning and subsequent treatment. Standardized uptake values (SUV), metabolic tumor volume (MTV), and total lesion glycolysis (TLG) were measured on pre-treatment 18F-FDG PET/CT. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the relationship of these factors with metastasis. Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were used to identify associations between PET parameters and both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).Results: A total of 36 (48%) patients had neck or distant metastases at initial staging. After controlling for clinical factors, MTV (> 8.8 mL) was an independent factor for initial metastasis (adjusted odds ratio 4.80, 95% confidence interval 1.09-21.20; P = 0.039). All PET parameters of SUVmax (> 4.3), SUVmean (> 3.0), SUVpeak (3.9), MTV (> 8.8 mL), and TLG (> 31.1 g) were significant variables for PFS (all P < 0.05), while MTV and TLG were significant factors for OS. After controlling for clinicopathological factors, MTV (adjusted hazard ratio 4.36, 95% confidence interval 1.69-11.26; P = 0.002) and TLG (3.41, 1.47-7.91; P = 0.004) were significantly associated with PFS, but not OS.Conclusions: MTV is useful among quantitative PET measurements for predicting initial metastasis and PFS in patients with high-grade SGC. Background: Distinguishing lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has a tremendous therapeutic implication. Sometimes, the commonly used immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers fail to discriminate between them, urging for the identification of new diagnostic biomarkers.Methods: We performed IHC on tissue microarrays from two cohorts of lung cancer patients to analyse the expression of beta-arrestin-1, beta-arrestin-2 and clinically used diagnostic markers in ADC and SCC samples. Logistic regression models were applied for tumour subtype prediction. Parallel reaction monitoring (PRM)-based mass spectrometry was used to quantify beta-arrestin-1 in plasma from cancer patients and healthy donors.Results: Beta-arrestin-1 expression was significantly higher in ADC versus SCC samples. Beta-arrestin-1 displayed high sensitivity, specificity and negative predictive value. Its usefulness in an IHC panel was also shown. Plasma beta-arrestin-1 levels were considerably higher in lung cancer patients than in healthy donors and were higher in patients who later experienced a progressive disease than in patients showing complete/partial response following EGFR inhibitor therapy.Conclusions: Our data identify beta-arrestin-1 as a diagnostic marker to differentiate ADC from SCC and indicate its potential as a plasma biomarker for non-invasive diagnosis of lung cancer. We consider an excitatory population of subthreshold Izhikevich neurons which cannot fire spontaneously without noise. As the coupling strength passes a threshold, individual neurons exhibit noise-induced burstings. This neuronal population has adaptive dynamic synaptic strengths governed by the spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). However, STDP was not considered in previous works on stochastic burst synchronization (SBS) between noise-induced burstings of sub-threshold neurons. Here, we study the effect of additive STDP on SBS by varying the noise intensity D in the Barabási-Albert scale-free network (SFN). One of our main findings is a Matthew effect in synaptic plasticity which occurs due to a positive feedback process. Good burst synchronization (with higher bursting measure) gets better via long-term potentiation (LTP) of synaptic strengths, while bad burst synchronization (with lower bursting measure) gets worse via long-term depression (LTD). Consequently, a step-like rapid transition to SBS occurs by changing D, in contrast to a relatively smooth transition in the absence of STDP. We also investigate the effects of network architecture on SBS by varying the symmetric attachment degree l∗ and the asymmetry parameter Δl in the SFN, and Matthew effects are also found to occur by varying l∗ and Δl. Furthermore, emergences of LTP and LTD of synaptic strengths are investigated in details via our own microscopic methods based on both the distributions of time delays between the burst onset times of the pre- and the post-synaptic neurons and the pair-correlations between the pre- and the post-synaptic instantaneous individual burst rates (IIBRs). Finally, a multiplicative STDP case (depending on states) with soft bounds is also investigated in comparison with the additive STDP case (independent of states) with hard bounds. Objectives: Despite the excellent prognosis of early glottic cancer (T1-T2), the significance of preoperatively measured tumor thickness has not been elucidated. We evaluated the role of tumor thickness measured using computed tomography (CT) as a predictive factor for recurrence of early glottic cancer after transoral laser microsurgery (TLM). Methods: The medical records of 134 patients who were diagnosed with early glottic squamous cell carcinoma and underwent TLM were reviewed. Age, sex, clinical stage, preoperative biopsy, anterior commissure involvement, CT findings, recurrence, and overall survival were evaluated. Results: Seventy-three patients (54 T1a, 2 T1b, and 17 T2) were enrolled. Tumor thickness on pathology increased proportionally with increased tumor thickness on CT. The recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival rates were 82.2 and 91.2%, respectively. Upon univariate analysis, RFS was affected by the type of cordectomy, tumor differentiation, margin involvement, anterior commissure involvement, impaired vocal fold mobility, and tumor thickness (> 4 mm) on CT scan (all p < 0.01). Among the relevant covariates, an involved or close resection margin [hazard ratio (HR) 19.2; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.5-105.6; p < 0.01], impaired vocal cord mobility (HR 8.5; 95% CI 1.45-49.2; p = 0.02), and pathological tumor thickness (> 4 mm) (HR 6.0; p = 0.02) were predictive of RFS. Conclusion: Tumor thickness may be another predictive factor for recurrence in early glottic cancer. The exact mechanism of cadmium (Cd) immobilization by oyster shell (OS) has not been reported. The effect of OS on Cd immobilization and the exact mechanism should be known before applying remediation technology using OS to Cd contaminated soils. Therefore, the objective of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of Cd immobilization by OS. Three grams of OS (< 0.84 mm) was reacted with 30 mL of 0-3.56 mg Cd L solution at 25 °C for 48 h. Cadmium adsorption increased with increasing initial concentration of Cd in solution. The X-ray diffraction patterns clearly demonstrated that precipitation of CdCO did not take place in suspensions of OS after reacting with up to 3.56 mol Cd L. Interestingly, we found formation of CaCdCO crystalline in suspension of OS after reacting with maximum initial Cd concentrations. Precipitation and chemisorption might contribute to Cd immobilization together. However, we feel confident that chemisorption is the major mechanism by which Cd immobilization occurs with OS. In conclusion, OS could be an effective bioadsorbent to immobilize Cd through formation of geochemically stable Cd mineral. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For studying how dynamical responses to external stimuli depend on the synaptic-coupling type, we consider two types of excitatory and inhibitory synchronization (i.e., synchronization via synaptic excitation and inhibition) in complex small-world networks of excitatory regular spiking (RS) pyramidal neurons and inhibitory fast spiking (FS) interneurons. For both cases of excitatory and inhibitory synchronization, effects of synaptic couplings on dynamical responses to external time-periodic stimuli S( t) (applied to a fraction of neurons) are investigated by varying the driving amplitude A of S( t). Stimulated neurons are phase-locked to external stimuli for both cases of excitatory and inhibitory couplings. On the other hand, the stimulation effect on non-stimulated neurons depends on the type of synaptic coupling. The external stimulus S( t) makes a constructive effect on excitatory non-stimulated RS neurons (i.e., it causes external phase lockings in the non-stimulated sub-population), while S( t) makes a destructive effect on inhibitory non-stimulated FS interneurons (i.e., it breaks up original inhibitory synchronization in the non-stimulated sub-population). As results of these different effects of S( t), the type and degree of dynamical response (e.g., synchronization enhancement or suppression), characterized by the dynamical response factor $$D_f$$ (given by the ratio of synchronization degree in the presence and absence of stimulus), are found to vary in a distinctly different way, depending on the synaptic-coupling type. Furthermore, we also measure the matching degree between the dynamics of the two sub-populations of stimulated and non-stimulated neurons in terms of a 'cross-correlation' measure $$M_c$$ . Objective: We aimed to identify the clinical implications of nonspecific pulmonary nodules (NPNs) detected in the initial staging workup for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).Methods: Medical records of patients who had been diagnosed and treated in our hospital were retrospectively analysed. After definite treatment, changes of NPNs detected on initial evaluation were monitored via serial chest computed tomography. The associations between NPNs and the clinicopathological characteristics of primary HNSCC were evaluated. Survival analyses were performed according to the presence of NPNs.Results: The study consisted of 158 (49.4%) patients without NPNs and 162 (50.6%) patients with NPNs. The cumulative incidence of probabilities of pulmonary malignancy (PM) development at 2 years after treatment were 9.0% and 6.2% in NPN-negative and NPN-positive patients, respectively. Overall and PM-free survival rates were not significantly different according to NPN status. Cervical lymph node (LN) involvement and a platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) ≥126 increased the risk of PMs (both P <0.05).Conclusions: NPNs detected in the initial evaluation of patients with HNSCC did not predict the risk of pulmonary malignancies. Mannosylphosphorylated glycans are found only in fungi, including yeast, and the elimination of mannosylphosphates from glycans is a prerequisite for yeast glyco-engineering to produce human-compatible glycoproteins. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, MNN4 and MNN6 genes are known to play roles in mannosylphosphorylation, but disruption of these genes does not completely remove the mannosylphosphates in N-glycans. This study was performed to find unknown key gene(s) involved in N-glycan mannosylphosphorylation in S. cerevisiae. For this purpose, each of one MNN4 and five MNN6 homologous genes were deleted from the och1Δmnn1Δmnn4Δmnn6Δ strain, which lacks yeast-specific hyper-mannosylation and the immunogenic α(1,3)-mannose structure. N-glycan profile analysis of cell wall mannoproteins and a secretory recombinant protein produced in mutants showed that the MNN14 gene, an MNN4 paralog with unknown function, is essential for N-glycan mannosylphosphorylation. Double disruption of MNN4 and MNN14 genes was enough to eliminate N-glycan mannosylphosphorylation. Our results suggest that the S. cerevisiae och1Δmnn1Δmnn4Δmnn14Δ strain, in which all yeast-specific N-glycan structures including mannosylphosphorylation are abolished, may have promise as a useful platform for glyco-engineering to produce therapeutic glycoproteins with human-compatible N-glycans. Objectives: To identify the clinical significance of primary tumour thickness (TT) and its direction in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), we measured TT in all axial/coronal/sagittal views on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and evaluated their meaning.Methods: A total of 53 OTSCC patients were analysed who had undergone preoperative three-dimensional MRI and had been surgically treated. TT measured on axial (mediolateral direction), coronal (superoinferior direction), and sagittal (anteroposterior direction) views was compared to that in pathologic specimens. The association between TT on MRI and other pathologic parameters was also evaluated.Results: TT on MRI in each plane showed relatively high concordance rates with the histological measurements. TT in all three planes was significantly correlated with lymph node (LN) metastasis. Occult LN metastasis was found in 15 of 39 (38.5%) patients, and the cutoff value of TT in axial/coronal/sagittal MRI predicting occult LN metastasis was 6.7 mm, 7.2 mm, and 12.3 mm, respectively. TT on MRI did not show any significant association with recurrence and survival.Conclusions: TT on MRI in all three planes showed relatively high coincidence with TT on histopathology and presented a potential cut-off value as a predictive indicator for occult LN metastasis.Key Points: Three-dimensional measurement of tumour thickness (TT) is important for oral cancer treatment. Purpose: Quality of life (QOL) scores in cancer patients are associated with disease course and treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the associations between pretreatment QOL scores and survival or functional outcomes in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).Methods: This prospective study enrolled a total of 141 patients with previously untreated HNSCC who underwent curative treatments from October 2010 to March 2012. Patients completed questionnaires on QOL including the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer 30-item Core QOL questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and EORTC QOL questionnaire Head and Neck Cancer module (QLQ-H&N35). Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify QOL scores significantly associated with overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), and functional outcomes of gastrostomy or tracheostomy dependence.Results: The 2-year OS and DFS rates were 82.3 and 78.0%, respectively. The rates of gastrostomy and tracheostomy dependence were 9.2 and 14.9%, respectively. After controlling for clinical factors, specific QOL indices of 'dyspnea' (hazard ratio 1.023 [95% confidence interval 1.006-1.039]) and 'appetite loss' (1.020 [1.005-1.034]) were significantly associated with OS, while 'insomnia' (1.013 [1.002-1.025]) and 'appetite loss' (1.014 [1.001-1.026]) scores were significantly predictive of DFS (P < 0.05). Global health status score (0.967 [0.935-1.000]) and fatigue (1.048 [1.010-1.086]) were significantly associated with the dependence of tracheostomy (P < 0.05). There was no relationship between gastrostomy dependence and QOL indices.Conclusion: This study provides evidence of significant relationships between certain pretreatment QOL measures and survival or functional outcomes in HNSCC patients. We are interested in characterization of synchronization transitions of bursting neurons in the frequency domain. Instantaneous population firing rate (IPFR) $$R(t)$$ , which is directly obtained from the raster plot of neural spikes, is often used as a realistic collective quantity describing population activities in both the computational and the experimental neuroscience. For the case of spiking neurons, a realistic time-domain order parameter, based on $$R(t)$$ , was introduced in our recent work to characterize the spike synchronization transition. Unlike the case of spiking neurons, the IPFR $$R(t)$$ of bursting neurons exhibits population behaviors with both the slow bursting and the fast spiking timescales. For our aim, we decompose the IPFR $$R(t)$$ into the instantaneous population bursting rate $$R_b(t)$$ (describing the bursting behavior) and the instantaneous population spike rate $$R_s(t)$$ (describing the spiking behavior) via frequency filtering, and extend the realistic order parameter to the case of bursting neurons. Thus, we develop the frequency-domain bursting and spiking order parameters which are just the bursting and spiking 'coherence factors' $$\beta _b$$ and $$\beta _s$$ of the bursting and spiking peaks in the power spectral densities of $$R_b$$ and $$R_s$$ (i.e., 'signal to noise' ratio of the spectral peak height and its relative width). Through calculation of $$\beta _b$$ and $$\beta _s$$ , we obtain the bursting and spiking thresholds beyond which the burst and spike synchronizations break up, respectively. Consequently, it is shown in explicit examples that the frequency-domain bursting and spiking order parameters may be usefully used for characterization of the bursting and the spiking transitions, respectively. We are interested in noise-induced firings of subthreshold neurons which may be used for encoding environmental stimuli. Noise-induced population synchronization was previously studied only for the case of global coupling, unlike the case of subthreshold spiking neurons. Hence, we investigate the effect of complex network architecture on noise-induced synchronization in an inhibitory population of subthreshold bursting Hindmarsh-Rose neurons. For modeling complex synaptic connectivity, we consider the Watts-Strogatz small-world network which interpolates between regular lattice and random network via rewiring, and investigate the effect of small-world connectivity on emergence of noise-induced population synchronization. Thus, noise-induced burst synchronization (synchrony on the slow bursting time scale) and spike synchronization (synchrony on the fast spike time scale) are found to appear in a synchronized region of the $$J$$ - $$D$$ plane ( $$J$$ : synaptic inhibition strength and $$D$$ : noise intensity). As the rewiring probability $$p$$ is decreased from 1 (random network) to 0 (regular lattice), the region of spike synchronization shrinks rapidly in the $$J$$ - $$D$$ plane, while the region of the burst synchronization decreases slowly. We separate the slow bursting and the fast spiking time scales via frequency filtering, and characterize the noise-induced burst and spike synchronizations by employing realistic order parameters and statistical-mechanical measures introduced in our recent work. Thus, the bursting and spiking thresholds for the burst and spike synchronization transitions are determined in terms of the bursting and spiking order parameters, respectively. In this study, we characterized the CpxRA two-component signal transduction system of the rumen bacterium Mannheimia succiniciproducens. The truncated form of the CpxA sensor kinase protein without its transmembrane domain was able to autophosphorylate and transphosphorylate the CpxR response regulator protein in vitro. We identified 152 putative target genes for the Cpx system in M. succiniciproducens, which were differentially expressed by more than twofold upon overexpression of the CpxR protein. Genes of a putative 16-gene operon related to the cell wall and lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis were induced strongly upon CpxR overexpression. The promoter region of the first gene of this operon, wecC encoding UDP- N-acetyl- D-mannosaminuronate dehydrogenase, was analyzed and found to contain a sequence homologous to the CpxR box of Escherichia coli. An electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed that the phosphorylated CpxR proteins were able to bind specifically to PCR-amplified DNA fragments containing the promoter sequence of wecC. Furthermore, a cpxR-disrupted mutant strain exhibited increased envelope permeability compared with a wild-type strain. Drop-on-demand printing is receiving a great deal of interest in industrial applications; however, the desired pattern sizes are realized by trial and error, through repeated printing experiments with varied materials (ink and suspended particles), operating conditions (voltage, flow rate, nozzle-to-plate distance, etc.), and substrate wettability. Since this approach requires a great deal of time, cost, and effort, a more convenient and efficient method that will predict pattern sizes with a minimal number of experiments is needed. In this study, we patterned a series of Ag dots and lines using a pulsed voltage-applied electrohydrodynamic jet printing system and measured their sizes with an optical microscope. We then applied a model suggested by Stringer and Derby (J Eur Ceram Soc 29:913-918, ) and Gao and Sonin (Proc R Soc Lond Ser A 444:533-554, ) to predict the pattern sizes, comparing these predictions with the measured sizes. We consider an excitatory population of subthreshold Izhikevich neurons which exhibit noise-induced firings. By varying the coupling strength J, we investigate population synchronization between the noise-induced firings which may be used for efficient cognitive processing such as sensory perception, multisensory binding, selective attention, and memory formation. As J is increased, rich types of population synchronization (e.g., spike, burst, and fast spike synchronization) are found to occur. Transitions between population synchronization and incoherence are well described in terms of an order parameter $$\mathcal{O}$$ . As a final step, the coupling induces oscillator death (quenching of noise-induced spikings) because each neuron is attracted to a noisy equilibrium state. The oscillator death leads to a transition from firing to non-firing states at the population level, which may be well described in terms of the time-averaged population spike rate $$\overline{R}$$ . In addition to the statistical-mechanical analysis using $$\mathcal{O}$$ and $$\overline{R}$$ , each population and individual state are also characterized by using the techniques of nonlinear dynamics such as the raster plot of neural spikes, the time series of the membrane potential, and the phase portrait. We note that population synchronization of noise-induced firings may lead to emergence of synchronous brain rhythms in a noisy environment, associated with diverse cognitive functions. By varying the noise intensity, we study stochastic spiking coherence (i.e., collective coherence between noise-induced neural spikings) in an inhibitory population of subthreshold neurons (which cannot fire spontaneously without noise). This stochastic spiking coherence may be well visualized in the raster plot of neural spikes. For a coherent case, partially-occupied 'stripes' (composed of spikes and indicating collective coherence) are formed in the raster plot. This partial occupation occurs due to 'stochastic spike skipping' which is well shown in the multi-peaked interspike interval histogram. The main purpose of our work is to quantitatively measure the degree of stochastic spiking coherence seen in the raster plot. We introduce a new spike-based coherence measure M by considering the occupation pattern and the pacing pattern of spikes in the stripes. In particular, the pacing degree between spikes is determined in a statistical-mechanical way by quantifying the average contribution of (microscopic) individual spikes to the (macroscopic) ensemble-averaged global potential. This 'statistical-mechanical' measure M is in contrast to the conventional measures such as the 'thermodynamic' order parameter (which concerns the time-averaged fluctuations of the macroscopic global potential), the 'microscopic' correlation-based measure (based on the cross-correlation between the microscopic individual potentials), and the measures of precise spike timing (based on the peri-stimulus time histogram). In terms of M, we quantitatively characterize the stochastic spiking coherence, and find that M reflects the degree of collective spiking coherence seen in the raster plot very well. Laser beam printers can be substantial sources of submicron particles in the indoor environment. The present work investigated particle emissions from a commercial laser beam printer (LBP), which was one of single component, non-magnetic, non-contact mode type LBPs, in various operating conditions. Size distribution and number concentration of particles were measured by a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS). The size distribution of particles generated from the printer was 20–200 nm in equivalent mobility diameter, regardless of the operating condition. When the fuser system was operated by fuser controller without development and the temperature of the heating roller was 190°C, particles were detected and their peak concentration was about 103 particles/cm3. Zero percent coverage white papers and five percent coverage black papers, were used, the peak concentrations were 1.5×105 particles/cm3 and 3.3×105 particles/cm3, respectively. Echinococcosis, also known as hydatid disease, is an infection of larval stage animal tapeworm, Echinococcus. The larvae reside in the liver and lungs, producing multiloculated fluid-filled cysts. Imaging findings of Echinococcosis caused by E. granulosus are single, unilocular cyst or multiseptated cysts, showing "wheel-like", "rosette-like" or "honeycomb-like" appearances. There may be "snow-flakes" sign, reflecting free floating protoscoleces (hydatid-sand) within the cyst cavity. Degenerating cysts show wavy or serpentine bands or floating membranes representing detached or ruptured membranes. Degenerated cysts show heterogeneous, solid-looking pseudotumor that may show "ball of wool sign". Dead cysts show calcified cyst wall. Echinococcosis caused by E. multilocularis produces multilocular alveolar cysts with exogeneous proliferation, progressively invading the liver parenchyma and other tissues of the body. Imaging findings are ill-defined infiltrating lesions of the liver parenchyma, consisting of multiple small clustered cystic and solid components. On sonography, lesions are heterogeneous with indistinct margins, showing "hailstorm appearance" or "vesicular or alveolar appearance". CT and MR imaging displays multiple, irregular, ill-defined lesions. Multiple small round cysts with solid components are frequent. Large lesions show "geographical map" appearance. Calcifications are very frequent, appearing as peripheral calcification or punctuate scattered calcific foci. Invasion into the bile ducts, portal vein or hepatic vein may occur. Direct spread of infected tissue may result in cysts in the peritoneal cavity, kidneys, adrenal gland or bones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
