This study provides a comprehensive exploration of ground motions associated with micro-earthquakes induced by geothermal power plants (GPP) in Southern Germany and proposes corresponding ground motion prediction equations (GMPE). Initiating with a statistical analysis of recorded seismic data from the GPP in Insheim, the study is extended to the greater Munich area. For the latter, the scarce recorded data are merged with physics-based simulation data. The recorded data in Insheim, Poing, Unterhaching and the simulated data in Munich are compared to existing GMPEs for GPP-induced events, highlighting the need of new region-specific prediction equations. The proposed GMPEs are expressed in terms of peak quantities, spectral accelerations and velocities, separating the horizontal and vertical direction. The regression curves exhibit a good alignment with both recorded and simulated data, within an acceptable range. Notably, the results reveal higher spectral quantities at shorter periods ( < 0.1 s), underscoring the importance of this characteristic in seismic assessment. The article shows an exemplary application for a low-rise residential building, located at a hypocentral distance of 3 km. While the building meets serviceability standards for an M W up to 2.5, the verification fails at M W = 3 , emphasizing the need for robust risk assessment. These findings contribute to the understanding of ground motions of GPP-induced events, offering practical implications for serviceability verifications and aiding informed decision-making in geothermal energy projects. Summary: Cancer stem cells, also known as leukemic stem cells (LSC) in the context of leukemias, are an emerging topic in translational oncology and hematology. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Hematology and Oncology (LBI HO) was established in 2008 with the aim to translate LSC concepts into clinical practice. Major specific aims of the LBI HO are to identify LSC in various blood cell disorders and to improve anti-leukemic therapies by establishing LSC-targeting and LSC-eradicating approaches with the ultimate aim to translate these concepts into clinical practice. In addition, the LBI HO identified a number of diagnostic and prognostic LSC markers in various blood cell malignancies. Members of the LBI HO have also developed precision medicine tools and personalized medicine approaches around LSC in applied hematology. As a result, diagnosis, prognostication and therapy have improved in the past 10 years. Major disease models are myeloid leukemias and mast cell neoplasms. Finally, the LBI HO consortium launched several projects in the field of open innovation in science where patient-derived initiatives and their input supported the scientific community. Key aims for the future of the LBI HO are to develop LSC-related concepts and strategies further, with the long-term vision to cure more patients with hematologic malignancies. The ring-like peripheral light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2) expressed by many phototrophic purple bacteria is a popular model system in biological light-harvesting research due to its robustness, small size, and known crystal structure. Furthermore, the availability of structural variants with distinct electronic structures and optical properties has made this group of light harvesters an attractive testing ground for studies of structure–function relationships in biological systems. LH2 is one of several pigment-protein complexes for which a link between functionality and effects such as excitonic coherence and vibronic coupling has been proposed. While a direct connection has not yet been demonstrated, many such interactions are highly sensitive to resonance conditions, and a dependence of intra-complex dynamics on detailed electronic structure might be expected. To gauge the sensitivity of energy-level structure and relaxation dynamics to naturally occurring structural changes, we compare the photo-induced dynamics in two structurally distinct LH2 variants. Using polarization-controlled 2D electronic spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures, we directly access information on dynamic and static disorder in the complexes. The simultaneous optimal spectral and temporal resolution of these experiments further allows us to characterize the ultrafast energy relaxation, including exciton transport within the complexes. Despite the variations in PPC molecular structure manifesting as clear differences in electronic structure and disorder, the energy-transport and—relaxation dynamics remain remarkably similar. This indicates that the light-harvesting functionality of purple bacteria within a single LH2 complex is highly robust to structural perturbations and likely does not rely on finely tuned electronic- or electron-vibrational resonance conditions. mRNA biogenesis in the eukaryotic nucleus is a highly complex process. The numerous RNA processing steps are tightly coordinated to ensure that only fully processed transcripts are released from chromatin for export from the nucleus. Here, we present the hypothesis that fission yeast Dbp2, a ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP) remodelling ATPase of the DEAD-box family, is the key enzyme in an RNP assembly checkpoint at the 3'-end of genes. We show that Dbp2 interacts with the cleavage and polyadenylation complex (CPAC) and localises to cleavage bodies, which are enriched for 3'-end processing factors and proteins involved in nuclear RNA surveillance. Upon loss of Dbp2, 3'-processed, polyadenylated RNAs accumulate on chromatin and in cleavage bodies, and CPAC components are depleted from the soluble pool. Under these conditions, cells display an increased likelihood to skip polyadenylation sites and a delayed transcription termination, suggesting that levels of free CPAC components are insufficient to maintain normal levels of 3'-end processing. Our data support a model in which Dbp2 is the active component of an mRNP remodelling checkpoint that licenses RNA export and is coupled to CPAC release. DEAD-box ATPases are important regulators of RNA metabolism and are involved in all stages of RNA biogenesis. Objectives: Bartonella spp., renowned for cat-scratch disease, has limited reports of dissemination. Tissue and blood cultures have limitations in detecting this fastidious pathogen. Molecular testing (polymerase chain reaction, PCR) and cell-free DNA have provided an avenue for diagnoses. This retrospective observational multicenter study describes the incidence of disseminated Bartonella spp. and treatment-related outcomes. Methods: Inclusion criteria were diagnosis of bartonellosis via diagnosis code, serology testing of blood, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of blood, 16/18S tests of blood or tissue, cultures of blood or tissue, or cell-free DNA of blood or tissue from January 1, 2014, through September 1, 2021. Exclusions were patients who did not receive treatment, insufficient data on treatment course, absence of dissemination, or retinitis as dissemination. Results: Patients were primarily male (n = 25, 61.0%), white (n = 28, 68.3%), with mean age of 50 years (SD 14.4), and mean Charlson comorbidity index of 3.5 (SD 2.1). Diagnosis was primarily by serology (n = 34, 82.9%), with Bartonella henselae (n = 40, 97.6%) as the causative pathogen. Treatment was principally doxycycline with rifampin (n = 17, 41.5%). Treatment failure occurred in 16 (39.0%) patients, due to escalation of therapy during treatment (n = 5, 31.3%) or discontinuation of therapy due to an adverse event or tolerability (n = 5, 31.3%). Conclusions: In conclusion, this is the largest United States-based cohort of disseminated Bartonella spp. infections to date with a reported 39% treatment failure. Previous fMRI research found increased brain responses in men with pedophilic interest to non-sexual pictures of child and animal faces. This raised the question of whether an aberrant nurturing system could be linked to pedophilia. To further explore this hypothesis, 20 pedohebephilic and 23 teleiophilic men performed a target detection task with adult versus infant human and animal faces, which measured selective attention towards the baby schema by comparing reaction times to infant versus adult targets that were presented amongst distractors of the other category. Since the response to baby schema can be influenced by steroid hormones, saliva samples were additionally collected to determine endogenous testosterone, progesterone, estradiol and cortisol. Contrary to expectations, all men did not react faster to infant than adult faces. Yet, pedohebephilic men were more distracted by infant's faces than teleiophilic men. Pedohebephilic men with higher testosterone were faster in orienting attention to infant targets in the context of adult distractors. This association was not observed in teleiophilic men. The use of bio-based raw materials in the manufacture of customized aerogels has increased significantly over the last decade. Combining the advantages of biopolymer sustainability and lower costs when producing aerogels in particulate form, agar aerogel particles were fabricated in this study. They were prepared by successive thermal gelation, ethanol solvent exchange, wet milling and supercritical CO2 assisted drying. The particles still maintain high porosity (~ 1.0 cm3 g−1) and high specific surface areas (210–270 m2 g−1). The stability in wound fluid substitutes, liquid holding capacity, and cytocompatibility of these agar-based aerogel particles may make them an advantageous wound-dressing matrix that can be further customized for particular applications by adding wound-active/reactive substances, such as antibiotics, antioxidants, immunoreactive drugs or growth factors. Plakophilin 4 (PKP4) is a component of cell–cell junctions that regulates intercellular adhesion and Rho-signaling during cytokinesis with an unknown function during epidermal differentiation. Here we show that keratinocytes lacking PKP4 fail to develop a cortical actin ring, preventing adherens junction maturation and generation of tissue tension. Instead, PKP4-depleted cells display increased stress fibers. PKP4-dependent RhoA localization at AJs was required to activate a RhoA-ROCK2-MLCK-MLC2 axis and organize actin into a cortical ring. AJ-associated PKP4 provided a scaffold for the Rho activator ARHGEF2 and the RhoA effectors MLCK and MLC2, facilitating the spatio-temporal activation of RhoA signaling at cell junctions to allow cortical ring formation and actomyosin contraction. In contrast, association of PKP4 with the Rho suppressor ARHGAP23 reduced ARHGAP23 binding to RhoA which prevented RhoA activation in the cytoplasm and stress fiber formation. Variable importance is a key statistical issue in exposure mixtures, as it allows a ranking of exposures as potential targets for intervention, and helps to identify bad actors within a mixture. In settings where mixtures have many constituents or high between-constituent correlations, estimators of importance can be subject to bias or high variance. Current approaches to assessing variable importance have major limitations, including reliance on overly strong or incorrect constraints or assumptions, excessive model extrapolation, or poor interpretability, especially regarding practical significance. We sought to overcome these limitations by applying an established doubly robust, machine learning-based approach to estimating variable importance in a mixtures context. This method reduces model extrapolation, appropriately controls confounding, and provides both interpretability and model flexibility. We illustrate its use with an evaluation of the relationship between telomere length, a measure of biologic aging, and exposure to a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and furans among 979 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In contrast with standard approaches for mixtures, our approach selected PCB 180 and PCB 194 as important contributors to telomere length. We hypothesize that this difference could be due to residual confounding in standard methods that rely on variable selection. Maternal capacity to mentalize (= reflective functioning, RF), secure attachment and emotionally available parenting has an impact on the child's development. The transmission of mothers' past attachment experiences gained with both her caregivers in her own childhood and the impact on current mother–child interaction is part of the 'transmission gap.' This study explores the transgenerational transmission mechanisms and the potential moderating effect of RF in a clinical sample of 113 mother–child dyads suffering from mental health problems. In a cross-sectional study, the associations between maternal attachment experiences, RF (coded based on Adult Attachment Interviews) and current mother–child interaction (Emotional Availability Scales) were examined with univariate correlation, moderator analyses, and structural equation models. We found relationships between attachment experiences and mother–child interaction, but RF had no moderating effect. Past loving experiences and perceived neglection, particularly with the own father in childhood, were predictors for the present mother–child interaction. There seems to be an intergenerational transmission of attachment experiences to the ongoing generation. This study investigates the increased commercialization of African indigenous vegetables (AIV)—former subsistence crops such as African nightshade, cowpea leaves and amaranth species grown mainly by women—from a feminist economics perspective. The study aims to answer the following research question: How does AIV commercialization affect the gendered division of labor, women's participation in agricultural labor, their decision-making power, and their access to resources? We analyze commercialization's effects on gender relations in labor and decision-making power and also highlight women's agency. Based on a mixed method design and analyzing household-level panel data and qualitative focus groups from Kenya, we observe an economic empowerment of women that we relate to women's individual and collective strategies as well as their retention of control over AIV selling and profits. Yet, while we see economic empowerment of women through commercialization—how they broaden their scope of action and are empowered by generating revenue—that does not contribute to a redistribution of labor or land rights, which are key for gender equality, instead it increases women's labor burden. The demand for space propulsion systems is increasing due to the rising number of satellite launches. Electric thrusters gain considerable importance as highly efficient systems in space. As the thrust generation process involves electrically charged particles in motion, ion and plasma thrusters can cause electromagnetic noise, which may interfere with satellite electronics or radio communication. Our objectives are to quantify such emissions and to better understand their origin. We use two facilities to achieve this goal: a semi-anechoic chamber (SAC) with a dedicated vacuum chamber and a mode-tuned vacuum chamber, also known as a reverberation chamber (RVC). Here, we conduct measurements in both facilities on an electron-cyclotron resonance (ECR) thruster with a magnetic nozzle in order to assess its electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This thruster emits a quasi-neutral plasma plume without requiring an additional neutralizer, thus, is especially suitable for conducting our studies. The thruster in operation acts as an electromagnetic noise source contributing to different frequency ranges. In addition to the excitation frequency band, the data reveals emissions occurring approximately one decade lower in frequency. These emissions depend on propellant mass flow, background pressure and excitation power, i.e., vary with the electron density of the plasma generated inside the ECR thruster. Mass-deployable implementations for quantum communication require compact, reliable, and low-cost hardware solutions for photon generation, control and analysis. We present a fiber-pigtailed hybrid photonic circuit comprising nonlinear waveguides for photon-pair generation and a polymer interposer reaching 68 dB of pump suppression and photon separation based on a polarizing beam splitter with > 25 dB polarization extinction ratio. The optical stability of the hybrid assembly enhances the quality of the entanglement, and the efficient background suppression and photon routing further reduce accidental coincidences. We thus achieve a 96 - 8 + 3 % concurrence and a 96 - 5 + 2 % fidelity to a Bell state. The generated telecom-wavelength, time-bin entangled photon pairs are ideally suited for distributing Bell pairs over fiber networks with low dispersion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The postnatal period is a potentially vulnerable time for families and can be associated with psychological distress in mothers and fathers. The aim of this analysis was to identify mother-father differences in symptoms of postnatal psychological distress and their risk factors. Cross-sectional screening data for postnatal psychological distress included postnatal depressive (PDS), anxiety (PAS), and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (POCS). Using baseline data of 4984 mothers and 962 fathers from the German SKKIPPI cohort study, we conducted an explorative multilevel logistic regression. Mothers were more likely than fathers to report PAS (OR 1.55, 95% CI: 1.00–2.41, p = 0.051) and POCS (1.38, 1.03–1.83, p = 0.029) but not PDS (1.15, 0.76–1.74, p = 0.509). Risk factors associated with psychological symptoms in mothers and fathers were life stressors, history of mental illness, and unsuitable pregnancy timing. Most risk factors were similar in mothers and fathers. However, relationship problems, having a child with a serious illness or disability, and the receipt of state payments seemed to have greater impact on fathers for some outcomes. These associations require further attention by researchers and should be considered by practitioners in the management of postnatal mental health. This paper presents an analytical approach for estimating frictional resistance to pipe movement at soil and external pipe surface of buried coated pressurized steel pipes relative to the internal thrust force. The proposed analytical method was developed based on 36 experiments, which involved three coating types (cement mortar (CM), polyurethane type-I (PT-I), prefabricated plastic tape (PPT)) on pipes' surfaces, three different soils (pea-gravel (PG), sand (S), silty-clay (SC)), and four simulated over burden depths above the pipe's crown. Investigation showed frictional resistance decreased with increasing over burden depth above the pipe's crown. The degree of frictional resistance at the pipe-soil interface was found to be in the order of PG > SC > S for all coating variations and overburden depths. CM coated pipe buried in all three types of soil produced significantly higher frictional resistance as compared to other coating types. Based on experimental data, the developed analytical introduced a dimensionless factor "Z", which included effects of types of coatings, soil, and overburden depths for simplified rapid calculation. Analysis showed that the method provided a better prediction of frictional resistance forces, in comparison to previous analytical methods, which were barely close in predicting friction resistance for different coating variations, soil types, and overburden depths. Essential tremor (ET) amplitude is modulated by visual feedback during target driven movements and in a grip force task. It has not been examined yet whether visual feedback exclusively modulates target force tremor amplitude or if other afferent inputs like auditory sensation has a modulatory effect on tremor amplitude as well. Also, it is unknown whether the enhanced sensory feedback causes an increase of arousal in persons with ET (p-ET). We hypothesized that (1) amplitude of tremor is modulated by variation of auditory feedback in the absence of visual feedback in a force tremor paradigm; (2) increase of tremor amplitude coincides with pupillary size as a measure of arousal. 14 p-ET and 14 matched healthy controls (HC) conducted a computer-based experiment in which they were asked to match a target force on a force sensor using their thumb and index finger. The force-induced movement was fed back to the participant visually, auditory or by a combination of both. Results showed a comparable deviation from the target force (RMSE) during the experiment during all three sensory feedback modalities. The ANOVA revealed an effect of the high vs. low feedback condition on the tremor severity (Power 4–12 Hz) for the visual- and also for the auditory feedback condition in p-ET. Pupillometry showed a significantly increased pupil diameter during the auditory involved high feedback conditions compared to the low feedback conditions in p-ET. Our findings suggest that action tremor in ET is firstly modulated not only by visual feedback but also by auditory feedback in a comparable manner. Therefore, tremor modulation seems to be modality independent. Secondly, high feedback was associated with a significant pupil dilation, possibly mirroring an increased arousal/perceived effort. This paper is concerned with the distributed optimal control of a time-discrete Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes system with variable densities. It focuses on the double-obstacle potential which yields an optimal control problem for a variational inequality of fourth order and the Navier–Stokes equation. The existence of solutions to the primal system and of optimal controls is established. The Lipschitz continuity of the constraint mapping is derived and used to characterize the directional derivative of the constraint mapping via a system of variational inequalities and partial differential equations. This paper presents a novel multi-scale method for elliptic partial differential equations with arbitrarily rough coefficients. In the spirit of numerical homogenization, the method constructs problem-adapted ansatz spaces with uniform algebraic approximation rates. Localized basis functions with the same super-exponential localization properties as the recently proposed Super-Localized Orthogonal Decomposition enable an efficient implementation. The method's basis stability is enforced using a partition of unity approach. A natural extension to higher order is presented, resulting in higher approximation rates and enhanced localization properties. We perform a rigorous a priori and a posteriori error analysis and confirm our theoretical findings in a series of numerical experiments. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the perception of substandard image quality may prompt repetition of the respective image acquisition protocol. Subsequently selecting the preferred high-quality image data from a series of acquisitions can be challenging. An automated workflow may facilitate and improve this selection. We therefore aimed to investigate the applicability of an automated image quality assessment for the prediction of the subjectively preferred image acquisition. Our analysis included data from 11,347 participants with whole-body MRI examinations performed as part of the ongoing prospective multi-center German National Cohort (NAKO) study. Trained radiologic technologists repeated any of the twelve examination protocols due to induced setup errors and/or subjectively unsatisfactory image quality and chose a preferred acquisition from the resultant series. Up to 11 quantitative image quality parameters were automatically derived from all acquisitions. Regularized regression and standard estimates of diagnostic accuracy were calculated. Controlling for setup variations in 2342 series of two or more acquisitions, technologists preferred the repetition over the initial acquisition in 1116 of 1396 series in which the initial setup was retained (79.9%, range across protocols: 73–100%). Image quality parameters then commonly showed statistically significant differences between chosen and discarded acquisitions. In regularized regression across all protocols, ‘structured noise maximum’ was the strongest predictor for the technologists’ choice, followed by ‘N/2 ghosting average’. Combinations of the automatically derived parameters provided an area under the ROC curve between 0.51 and 0.74 for the prediction of the technologists’ choice. It is concluded that automated image quality assessment can, despite considerable performance differences between protocols and anatomical regions, contribute substantially to identifying the subjective preference in a series of MRI acquisitions and thus provide effective decision support to readers. Purpose: We aimed to assess symptoms in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection and to identify factors predicting prolonged time to symptom-free. Methods: COVIDOM/NAPKON-POP is a population-based prospective cohort of adults whose first on-site visits were scheduled ≥ 6 months after a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test. Retrospective data including self-reported symptoms and time to symptom-free were collected during the survey before a site visit. In the survival analyses, being symptom-free served as the event and time to be symptom-free as the time variable. Data were visualized with Kaplan–Meier curves, differences were tested with log-rank tests. A stratified Cox proportional hazard model was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) of predictors, with aHR < 1 indicating a longer time to symptom-free. Results: Of 1175 symptomatic participants included in the present analysis, 636 (54.1%) reported persistent symptoms after 280 days (SD 68) post infection. 25% of participants were free from symptoms after 18 days [quartiles: 14, 21]. Factors associated with prolonged time to symptom-free were age 49–59 years compared to < 49 years (aHR 0.70, 95% CI 0.56–0.87), female sex (aHR 0.78, 95% CI 0.65–0.93), lower educational level (aHR 0.77, 95% CI 0.64–0.93), living with a partner (aHR 0.81, 95% CI 0.66–0.99), low resilience (aHR 0.65, 95% CI 0.47–0.90), steroid treatment (aHR 0.22, 95% CI 0.05–0.90) and no medication (aHR 0.74, 95% CI 0.62–0.89) during acute infection. Conclusion: In the studied population, COVID-19 symptoms had resolved in one-quarter of participants within 18 days, and in 34.5% within 28 days. Over half of the participants reported COVID-19-related symptoms 9 months after infection. The radiation environment in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is dominated by protons captured by Earth’s magnetic field in the Inner Van-Allen belt. Defunct satellites and other space debris objects can be resident in this environment for several decades and even centuries. So far, there is little knowledge about the impact of long-duration proton exposure to the surface morphology and reflectivity in LEO environment. We report on a laboratory test campaign exposing typical spacecraft materials with protons of 100 keV and 2.5 keV kinetic energy and a fluence corresponding to an in-orbit duration of 100 years and 120 years, respectively, in an 800 km sun-synchronous orbit. Although we find microscopic changes in surface morphology, reflectivity changes of all tested materials were smaller than 15%. This result brings positive news for on-going efforts to use optical methods, e.g. lightcurve measurements or active polarimetry, for characterizing space objects, since it suggests that data can - to a good approximation - be analyzed without accounting for proton induced aging effects that might affect the materials’ optical properties over time. Quantification and characterization of microplastics, synthetic polymers less than 5 mm in diameter, requires extraction methods that can reduce non-plastic debris without loss or alteration of the polymers. Nitric acid has been used to extract plastic particles from zooplankton and other biota because it completely digests tissue and exoskeletons, thus reducing interferences. While the impact of acid digestion protocols on several polymers has been demonstrated, advice for quantifying microplastic and interpreting their spectra following nitric acid digestion is lacking. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and/or Raman spectroscopy was performed on plastics from > 50 common consumer products (including a variety of textiles) pre- and post-nitric acid treatment. The percent match and assigned polymer were tabulated to compare the accuracy of spectral identification before and after nitric acid digestion via two open spectral analysis software. Nylon-66, polyoxymethylene, polyurethane, polyisoprene, nitrile rubber, and polymethyl methacrylate had ≥ 90% mass loss in nitric acid. Other less-impacted polymers changed color, morphology, and/or size following digestion. Thus, using nitric acid digestion for microplastic extraction can impact our understanding of the particle sizes and morphologies ingested in situ. Spectral analysis results were compiled to understand how often (1) the best-hit matches were correct (30–60% of spectra), (2) the best-hit matches exceeding the (arbitrary) threshold of 65% match were correct (53–78% of spectra), and (3) the best-hit matches for anthropogenic polymers were incorrectly identified as natural polymers (12–15% of spectra). Artificial selection by humans, either through domestication or subsequent selection for specific breeding objectives, drives changes in animal cognition and behaviour. However, most previous cognitive research comparing domestic and wild animals has focused on companion animals such as canids, limiting any general claims about the effects of artificial selection by humans. Using a cognitive test battery, we investigated the ability of wild goats (non-domestic, seven subjects), dwarf goats (domestic, not selected for milk production, 15 subjects) and dairy goats (domestic, selected for high milk yield, 18 subjects) to utilise physical and social cues in an object choice task. To increase the heterogeneity of our test samples, data for domestic goats were collected by two experimenters at two research stations (Agroscope; Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology). We did not find performance differences between the three groups in the cognitive test battery for either physical or social cues. This indicates that for a domestic non-companion animal species, domestication and selection for certain breeding objectives did not measurably shape the physical and cognitive skills of goats. Glycoprotein 90K, encoded by the interferon-stimulated gene LGALS3BP, displays broad antiviral activity. It reduces HIV-1 infectivity by interfering with Env maturation and virion incorporation, and increases survival of Influenza A virus-infected mice via antiviral innate immune signaling. Its antiviral potential in SARS-CoV-2 infection remains largely unknown. Here, we analyzed the expression of 90K/LGALS3BP in 44 hospitalized COVID-19 patients at multiple levels. We quantified 90K protein concentrations in serum and PBMCs as well as LGALS3BP mRNA levels. Complementary, we analyzed two single cell RNA-sequencing datasets for expression of LGALS3BP in respiratory specimens and PBMCs from COVID-19 patients. Finally, we analyzed the potential of 90K to interfere with SARS-CoV-2 infection of HEK293T/ACE2, Calu-3 and Caco-2 cells using authentic virus. 90K protein serum concentrations were significantly elevated in COVID-19 patients compared to uninfected sex- and age-matched controls. Furthermore, PBMC-associated concentrations of 90K protein were overall reduced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in vivo, suggesting enhanced secretion into the extracellular space. Mining of published PBMC scRNA-seq datasets uncovered monocyte-specific induction of LGALS3BP mRNA expression in COVID-19 patients. In functional assays, neither 90K overexpression in susceptible cell lines nor exogenous addition of purified 90K consistently inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our data suggests that 90K/LGALS3BP contributes to the global type I IFN response during SARS-CoV-2 infection in vivo without displaying detectable antiviral properties in vitro. Purpose: Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) once a year or colonoscopy once in 10 years is the option approved for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening for asymptomatic individuals aged ≥ 50 years in the Czech Republic. We analyzed participation in the screening program to determine possible improvements. Methods: In this observational cross-sectional study, data were collected from 4044 randomly chosen individuals from the Czech population (1866 men, 2178 women) aged ≥ 50 years by questionnaires. Individuals who underwent colonoscopy within the last 10 years or/and FIT within the last 2 years were classified as participants in the screening. Results: 1050 individuals underwent FIT, 464 colonoscopy, and 558 underwent both. Adjusted for age, gender, and education, a higher chance of participation in the screening was observed in groups of non-smokers (OR = 1.25; CI 1.05–1.48), ex-smokers (OR = 1.51; CI 1.26–1.83), consuming smoked meat products less than once a week (OR = 1.26; CI 1.09–1.45), practicing physical activity at least once a week (OR = 1.25; CI 1.03–1.51), hospitalized in the past 12 months (OR = 1.73; CI 1.47–2.05), or consulting a general practitioner (GP) in the past 12 months (OR = 2.26; CI 1.87–2.74). The chance of participation of individuals having a risk factor for CRC (obesity, smoking, diabetes, low physical activity, alcohol drinking) was not higher compared to those without the risk factors. Conclusion: Individuals with a tendency to a healthy lifestyle or being in recent contact with the healthcare system by various means, mainly visiting a GP, had a higher participation in the screening for CRC. In Germany, the knowledge about ticks infesting bats is limited, and is restricted only to a few studies, most of them dating back decades. To further improve our knowledge on ticks parasitising bats, healthy and sick bats in central Germany were examined for ticks. In total 519 larvae and one nymph of Carios vespertilionis were collected from nine bat species: Eptesicus nilssonii, Eptesicus serotinus, Myotis daubentonii, Myotis myotis, Nyctalus leisleri, Pipistrellus nathusii, Pipistrellus pygmaeus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, and Vespertilio murinus. Either the presence of C. vespertilionis was new for some areas or it was confirmed in some federal states in central Germany. The infestation rate was mostly low (n = 1–5 larvae/bat). The concept of "one-airway-one-disease", coined over 20 years ago, may be an over-simplification of the links between allergic diseases. Genomic studies suggest that rhinitis alone and rhinitis with asthma are operated by distinct pathways. In this MeDALL (Mechanisms of the Development of Allergy) study, we leveraged the information of the human interactome to distinguish the molecular mechanisms associated with two phenotypes of allergic rhinitis: rhinitis alone and rhinitis in multimorbidity with asthma. We observed significant differences in the topology of the interactomes and in the pathways associated to each phenotype. In rhinitis alone, identified pathways included cell cycle, cytokine signalling, developmental biology, immune system, metabolism of proteins and signal transduction. In rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity, most pathways were related to signal transduction. The remaining few were related to cytokine signalling, immune system or developmental biology. Toll-like receptors and IL-17-mediated signalling were identified in rhinitis alone, while IL-33 was identified in rhinitis in multimorbidity. On the other hand, few pathways were associated with both phenotypes, most being associated with signal transduction pathways including estrogen-stimulated signalling. The only immune system pathway was FceRI-mediated MAPK activation. Labile copper(II) ions (Cu2+) in serum are considered to be readily available for cellular uptake and to constitute the biologically active Cu2+ species in the blood. It might also be suitable to reflect copper dyshomeostasis during diseases such as Wilson's disease (WD) or neurological disorders. So far, no direct quantification method has been described to determine this small Cu2+ subset. This study introduces a fluorometric high throughput assay using the novel Cu2+ binding fluoresceine-peptide sensor FP4 (Kd of the Cu2+-FP4-complex 0.38 pM) to determine labile Cu2+ in human and rat serum. Using 96 human serum samples, labile Cu2+was measured to be 0.14 ± 0.05 pM, showing no correlation with age or other serum trace elements. No sex-specific differences in labile Cu2+ concentrations were noted, in contrast to the total copper levels in serum. Analysis of the effect of drug therapy on labile Cu2+ in the sera of 19 patients with WD showed a significant decrease in labile Cu2+ following copper chelation therapy, suggesting that labile Cu2+ may be a specific marker of disease status and that the assay could be suitable for monitoring treatment progress. The 3D range-migration algorithm (RMA) and its 2D equivalent, the omega-k algorithm, are employed in a wide range of applications where reconstruction of synthetic aperture data is required, from satellite radar imaging of planets over seismic imaging of the earth crust, down to phased-array ultrasound and ultrasonic application, and recently in-line synthetic aperture radar for non-destructive testing. These algorithms are based on Fourier transforms and share their time-complexity. This limits highly-resolved measurement data to be processed at high speeds which would be advantageous for modern production feed lines. In this publication, we present the development and implementation of the RMA on a quantum computer that scales favourably compared to the time complexity of the classical RMA. We compare reconstruction results of simulated and measured data of the classical and quantum RMA. Hereby, the quantum RMA is run on a quantum simulator backend as well as on IBM's Q System One quantum computer. Summary: Upper extremity (UE) fractures are prevalent age-related fractures, and stair-associated falls are a common mechanism for these injuries. Our study has identified an increasing incidence of stair-related UE fractures and associated hospitalization rates among the older United States population between 2012–2021. Targeted prevention efforts should be implemented by health systems. Introduction: To analyze United States (US) emergency department trends in upper extremity stair-related fractures among older adults and investigate risk factors associated with hospitalization. Methods: We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) for all stair-related fracture injuries between 2012 and 2021 among adults 65 years or older. The US Census Bureau International Database (IDB) was analyzed to calculate incidence rates. Descriptive analysis, linear regression analysis, and multivariate regression analysis were used to interpret the collected data. Results: Our analysis estimated 251,041 (95% CI: 211,678–290,404) upper extremity stair-related fractures among older adults occurred between 2012 and 2021. The primary anatomical locations were the humeral shaft (27%), wrist (26%), and proximal humerus (18%). We found a 56% increase in injuries (R2 = 0.77, p < 0.001), 7% increase in incidence per 100,000 persons (R2 = 0.42, p < 0.05), and an 38% increase in hospitalization rate (R2 = 0.61, p < 0.01) during the 10-year study period. Women sustained the majority of fractures (76%) and most injuries occurred in homes (89%). Advanced age (p < 0.0001), males (p < 0.0001), proximal humerus fractures (p < 0.0001), humeral shaft fractures (p < 0.0001), and elbow fractures (p < 0.0001) were associated with increased odds of hospitalization after injury. Conclusion: Stair-related UE fracture injuries, incidence, and hospitalization rates among older adults are increasing significantly, particularly among older females. The Einstein Probe (EP) satellite is designed for X-ray time-domain astronomy. The Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) is one of the scientific payloads onboard EP. It will mainly be used for the follow-up X-ray observation, and it will also be used for the sky survey and Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation. The focal plane detector of FXT provided by the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) adopts a PNCCD sensor. For detector cooling, a helium pulse tube refrigerator is used, provided by the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry (TIPC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), to keep the detector working at a temperature of −90 ± 0.5 °C. The PNCCD driving and data acquisition electronics are developed by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), CAS. To observe different celestial sources, we designed six filter wheel positions and three scientific operating modes for the PNCCD detector: the full-frame mode, the partial-window mode, and the timing mode. In the full-frame mode, the system frame rate is 20 frame/s and the energy resolution of the whole system reaches 92 eV @ 1.49 keV (FWHM). The frame rate of partial-window mode is 500 frame/s. Purpose: We aimed to re-evaluate the relationship between thalamic infarct (TI) localization and clinical symptoms using a vascular (VTM) and a novel functional territorial thalamic map (FTM). Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical data of 65 patients with isolated TI were evaluated (female n = 23, male n = 42, right n = 23, left n = 42). A VTM depicted the known seven thalamic vascular territories (VT: inferolateral, anterolateral, inferomedial, posterior, central, anteromedian, posterolateral). An FTM was generated from a probabilistic thalamic nuclei atlas to determine six functionally defined territories (FT: anterior: memory/emotions; ventral: motor/somatosensory/language; medial: behavior/emotions/nociception, oculomotor; intralaminar: arousal/pain; lateral: visuospatial/somatosensory/conceptual and analytic thinking; posterior: audiovisual/somatosensory). Four neuroradiologists independently assigned diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions to the territories mapped by the VTM and FTM. Findings were correlated with clinical features. Results: The most frequent symptom was a hemisensory syndrome (58%), which was not specific for any territory. A co-occurrence of hemisensory syndrome and hemiparesis had positive predictive values (PPV) of 76% and 82% for the involvement of the inferolateral VT and ventral FT, respectively. Thalamic aphasia had a PPV of 63% each for involvement of the anterolateral VT and ventral FT. Neglect was associated with involvement of the inferolateral VT/ventral FT. Interrater reliability for the assignment of DWI lesions to the VTM was fair (κ = 0.36), but good (κ = 0.73) for the FTM. Conclusion: The FTM revealed a greater reproducibility for the topographical assignment of TI than the VTM. Sensorimotor hemiparesis and neglect are predictive for a TI in the inferolateral VT/ventral FT. The hemisensory syndrome alone does not allow any topographical assignment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is a cost-effective method of administering intravenous antimicrobial therapy. Although OPAT is well established in the UK and US healthcare systems, few centres in Europe perform it. Here we analysed OPAT for the treatment of patients with spinal infections at our institution. In this retrospective study, patients with spinal infection who required intravenous (i.v.) antimicrobial treatment between 2018 and 2021 were analysed. The duration of short-term antimicrobial treatment for skin and soft tissue infections and complex infections requiring long-term antimicrobial treatment, such as spinal bone or joint infections, were analysed. All patients were discharged with a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line. Prior to discharge, all patients received training in the safe administration of their medications via the PICC line. The duration of OPAT and the rate of readmission after OPAT were analysed. For this study a total of 52 patients who were treated via OPAT due to spinal infections were analyzed. In 35 cases (69.2%) complex spinal infection was reason for i.v. antimicrobial therapy. Surgery was required in 23 of these 35 patients (65.7%). The average hospital stay for these patients was 12 ± 6 days. The remaining 17 patients were treated for an infection of the soft tissue or the skin and hospital stay for these patients was on average 8 ± 4 days. Gram-positive organisms were isolated in 64.4%. Staphylococcus aureus followed by other Staphylococcus species, was the most common detected organism. After discharging i.v. antimicrobial treatment was given for an average of 20 ± 14 days. The duration of antimicrobial treatment for soft tissue was 10.8 ± 8 days, and for complex infections 25.1 ± 18 days. The mean follow-up was 21 ± 14 months. There was one case of readmission due to treatment failure. There were no difficulties encountered in implementing OPAT. OPAT is a feasible and effective option for delivering intravenous antimicrobial therapy to patients with spinal infections who can be managed without hospitalisation. Background: Recently, molecular tumour boards (MTBs) have been integrated into the clinical routine. Since their benefit remains debated, we assessed MTB outcomes in the Comprehensive Cancer Center Ostbayern (CCCO) from 2019 to 2021. Methods and results: In total, 251 patients were included. Targeted sequencing was performed with PCR MSI-evaluation and immunohistochemistry for PD-L1, Her2, and mismatch repair enzymes. 125 treatment recommendations were given (49.8%). High-recommendation rates were achieved for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (20/30, 66.7%) and gastric adenocarcinoma (10/16, 62.5%) as opposed to colorectal cancer (9/36, 25.0%) and pancreatic cancer (3/18, 16.7%). MTB therapies were administered in 47 (18.7%) patients, while 53 (21.1%) received alternative treatment regimens. Thus 37.6% of recommended MTB therapies were implemented (47/125 recommendations). The clinical benefit rate (complete + partial + mixed response + stable disease) was 50.0% for MTB and 63.8% for alternative treatments. PFS2/1 ratios were 34.6% and 16.1%, respectively. Significantly improved PFS could be achieved for m1A-tier-evidence-based MTB therapies (median 6.30 months) compared to alternative treatments (median 2.83 months; P = 0.0278). Conclusion: The CCCO MTB yielded a considerable recommendation rate, particularly in cholangiocarcinoma patients. The discrepancy between the low-recommendation rates in colorectal and pancreatic cancer suggests the necessity of a weighted prioritisation of entities. Purpose: To gain insight into how patients with primary brain tumors experience MRI, follow-up protocols, and gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) use. Methods: Primary brain tumor patients answered a survey after their MRI exam. Questions were analyzed to determine trends in patients' experience regarding the scan itself, follow-up frequency, and the use of GBCAs. Subgroup analysis was performed on sex, lesion grade, age, and the number of scans. Subgroup comparison was made using the Pearson chi-square test and the Mann–Whitney U-test for categorical and ordinal questions, respectively. Results: Of the 100 patients, 93 had a histopathologically confirmed diagnosis, and seven were considered to have a slow-growing low-grade tumor after multidisciplinary assessment and follow-up. 61/100 patients were male, with a mean age ± standard deviation of 44 ± 14 years and 46 ± 13 years for the females. Fifty-nine patients had low-grade tumors. Patients consistently underestimated the number of their previous scans. 92% of primary brain tumor patients did not experience the MRI as bothering and 78% would not change the number of follow-up MRIs. 63% of the patients would prefer GBCA-free MRI scans if diagnostically equally accurate. Women found the MRI and receiving intravenous cannulas significantly more uncomfortable than men (p = 0.003). Age, diagnosis, and the number of previous scans had no relevant impact on the patient experience. Conclusion: Patients with primary brain tumors experienced current neuro-oncological MRI practice as positive. Especially women would, however, prefer GBCA-free imaging if diagnostically equally accurate. Patient knowledge of GBCAs was limited, indicating improvable patient information. Purpose: Atherosclerosis affects clinical outcomes in the setting of major surgery. Here we aimed to investigate the prognostic role of visceral aortic (VAC), extended visceral aortic (VAC+), and celiac artery calcification (CAC) in the assessment of short- and long-term outcomes following deceased donor orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in a western European cohort. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 281 consecutive recipients who underwent OLT at a German university medical center (05/2010–03/2020). The parameters VAC, VAC+, or CAC were evaluated by preoperative computed tomography-based calcium quantification according to the Agatston score. Results: Significant VAC or CAC were associated with impaired postoperative renal function (p = 0.0016; p = 0.0211). Patients with VAC suffered more frequently from early allograft dysfunction (EAD) (38 vs 26%, p = 0.031), while CAC was associated with higher estimated procedural costs (p = 0.049). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, VAC was identified as an independent predictor of EAD (2.387 OR, 1.290–4.418 CI, p = 0.006). Concerning long-term graft and patient survival, no significant difference was found, even though patients with calcification showed a tendency towards lower 5-year survival compared to those without (VAC: 65 vs 73%, p = 0.217; CAC: 52 vs 72%, p = 0.105). VAC+ failed to provide an additional prognostic value compared to VAC. Conclusion: This is the first clinical report to show the prognostic role of VAC/CAC in the setting of deceased donor OLT with a particular value in the perioperative phase. Purpose: Intraoperative 3D imaging has become a valued tool in assessing the quality of reduction and implant placement in orthopedic trauma surgery. In our institution, 3D imaging is used routinely since 2001. To evaluate the intraoperative findings and consequences of this technique, intraoperative revision rates in cases with 3D imaging were analyzed. Methods: All operative procedures carried out with intraoperative 3D imaging between August 2001 and December 2016 were included. The scans were assessed intraoperatively and documented thereafter. In case of malreduction or misplaced implants, an immediate revision was performed. The number of scans per case as well as the findings and consequences drawn regarding the anatomical region were analyzed. Results: 4721 cases with 7201 3D scans were included in this study. The most common anatomical regions were the ankle (22.3%), the calcaneus (14.8%) and the tibial head (9.5%). In 19.1% of all cases, an intraoperative revision was performed. The highest revision rates were found with 36.0% in calcaneal fractures, 24.8% in fractures of the tibial plateau, 22.3% in injuries of the ankle. In 52.0% of revisions, the reduction was improved regarding intra-articular steps or joint congruency. In 30.5% an implant was corrected. Conclusion: Intraoperative revision due to results of 3D imaging was performed in almost one-fifth of cases. This illustrates the improved possibilities to detect malreduction and implant misplacements intraoperatively and thus the abilities to improve surgical outcome. Level of evidence: III. Background: Repositioning of dislocated port systems' catheters is usually performed with a pigtail catheter and/or a goose snare. In case of an inaccessible port catheter tip due to thrombosis, this classic approach may be not successful. For these cases, we describe a long loop bailout technique with bifemoral access. Technique: Via a right transfemoral access, a first attempt to reposition the dislodged port catheter using pigtail catheter and goose snare was performed. After an unsuccessful attempt and delineation of thrombosis of the catheter tip, the contralateral femoral vein was subsequently punctured and a sheath was placed. Through both vascular sheaths, pigtail catheter and goose wire were advanced distally to the catheter. The guidewire in the pigtail catheter was snared, thus creating a "Long loop" configuration. Pulling down both catheters simultaneously with improved stability allowed to detach the catheter tip from the vessel wall and replacement into the superior vena cava was possible. Refinement of catheter tip position was done using the goose snare. This technique was applied on 5 patients with dislodged port catheters in the jugular vein (2/5), the innominate vein (1/5), the subclavian vein (1/5) and the azygos vein (1/5) with a technical success of 100%. No complications were observed. Conclusion: The Long loop technique can be used as salvage approach to reposition a dislodged catheter in case of failure with pigtail catheter and goose snare.
