Abstract

Development of autoantibodies against coagulation factor VIII (FVIII) occurs infrequently in nonhemophilic patients. Half of the cases appear spontaneously, but FVIII inhibitors may also arise in autoimmune diseases, malignancies, during and after pregnancy and during drug therapy including interferon alpha. Bleeding episodes are usually more serious in acquired than in congenital hemophilia. Although spontaneous remissions have been reported, the outcome of acquired hemophilia may be fatal. Mortality rates range between 15 and 20%.
