Slow earthquakes play a crucial role in understanding stress accumulation and release along plate interfaces in subduction zones. The northern Ryukyu Trench, where the Philippine Sea Plate subducts northwestward beneath the Eurasian Plate, experienced a major earthquake in 1911 and is currently regarded as a low-seismicity area (LSA). Understanding the seismic activity in this region, particularly the relationship between very-low-frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) and regular seismic events, is crucial for understanding subduction zone dynamics. We investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of VLFE activity in the northern Ryukyu Trench using broadband ocean-bottom seismometers deployed around Amami Island between September 2018 and June 2019. Our analysis, employing the envelope correlation method, revealed that VLFE activity is primarily concentrated northeast of Amami Island, an area characterized by low regular earthquake activity, with the distribution of VLFEs spatially segregated from that of regular earthquakes. Furthermore, we observed earthquake swarm activity at the edges of the LSA in the northern Ryukyu Trench following VLFE activity. In November 2018, intense VLFE activity northeast of Amami Island migrated northeastward, which was followed by a regular earthquake swarm at the edge of this LSA. Following VLFE activity in January 2019, additional seismic activity, including foreshocks, occurred at the edges of this LSA approximately 1 month later. The spatial segregation of VLFEs and regular earthquakes suggests that VLFE activity may be influenced by the migration of high-pressure fluids within the subducted slab. This migration appears to trigger related time-delayed seismic activity, similar to mechanisms observed in other subduction zones such as Hikurangi. Understanding these dynamics is essential for assessing the coupling state of subduction zones and associated fluid behaviors, which play a critical role in evaluating seismic hazards in LSAs. To obtain novel information regarding normal faults that could cause tsunamis and large earthquakes on the outer slopes of the Kuril Trench, recently acquired multichannel seismic reflection (MCS) and bathymetric data are processed in this study to interpret the normal faults on the outer slope of the western Kuril Trench from near the Erimo Seamount to near the Nosappu Fracture Zone. This work also assesses the distribution and characteristics of the faults through comparisons with previous studies on the outer slope faults of the Japan Trench. The results of this study show that faulting starts approximately 100 km seaward of the trench axis, and a comparison with the normal fault distributions on the outer slope of the Japan Trench presented in previous studies reveals that the outer slope region of the Kuril Trench is narrower and more densely faulted than that of the Japan Trench. Additionally, the seismic and bathymetric data show that the Erimo and Takuyo-Daiichi Seamounts are deformed by normal faults. However, the number of faults in the seamount areas is lower than that in areas without them, which also affects the scale of the fault throws. The results of the MCS survey reveal that the thickness of the oceanic crust varies between 6 and 10 km due to the presence of these seamounts. Considering the positions of the outer swells presented in previous studies, the results suggest that the crustal and plate structures in the study area influence the distribution and formation of faults on the outer slope of the Kuril Trench. The preface for the article collection "10 years after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake: a milestone of solid earth science" highlights the scientific discoveries made since the earthquake, thanks to near-field observations and existing knowledge about the northeastern Japan arc. The earthquake revealed dynamic frictional behaviors of the subduction interface and provided insights into subduction zone dynamics. The collection of research on the Tohoku earthquake is expected to benefit the understanding of subduction earthquakes worldwide. The preface also mentions various research papers included in the collection, covering topics such as coseismic stress drop, afterslip, seafloor observations, slow earthquake activity, tsunami deposits, paleoseismology, and numerical modeling of the earthquake cycle. Ongoing research on postseismic deformation and historical research on earthquake occurrence are also discussed. The southern Kuril Trench is one of the most seismically active regions in the world. In this study, marine surveys and observations were performed to construct fault models for possible outer-rise earthquakes. Seismic and seafloor bathymetric surveys indicated that the dip angle of the outer-rise fault was approximately 50°–80°, with a strike that was slightly oblique to the axis of the Kuril Trench. The maximum fault length was estimated to be ~ 260 km. Based on these findings, we proposed 17 fault models, with moment magnitudes ranging from 7.2 to 8.4. To numerically simulate tsunami, we solved two-dimensional dispersive wave and three-dimensional Euler equations using the outer-rise fault models. The results of both simulations yielded identical predictions for tsunami with short-wavelength components, resulting in significant dispersive deformations in the open ocean. We also found that tsunami generated by outer-rise earthquakes were affected by refraction and diffraction because of the source location beyond the trench axis. The westernmost Nankai Trough, southwest Japan, exhibits a rapid along-strike reduction in plate coupling in the proximity to the subducting Kyushu-Palau ridge. Yet how and to what extent the ridge subduction impacts physical properties at the megathrust have not been investigated. Here we present high-resolution seismic P-wave velocity models along the forearc wedge in the western Nankai Trough derived from full-waveform inversion analyses of seismic refraction data. The velocity models show that where the plate coupling is weak and the plate boundary presumably hosts slow earthquakes, the upper plate exhibits lower seismic velocities indicating higher degree of fracturing over a ~ 100 km length along trough. Intriguingly, the extent of the upper-plate low-velocity features is significantly larger than the surficial width of the Kyushu-Palau ridge, and this low-velocity zone is underthrust by the slab with increased crustal thickness by 2–4 km. Seismic reflection images consistently reveal that the thicker slab crust has appreciable basement roughness extending ~ 60 km from the eastern margin of the Kyushu-Palau ridge beneath the western Shikoku basin. We suggest that such a thicker and rugged slab crust, together with the main body of the Kyushu-Palau ridge, can cause significant fracture zones in the overriding plate, decrease the interplate coupling and produce preferable conditions for shallow slow earthquakes to occur when subducted. Estimates of heat flow can contribute to our understanding of geological structures in plate convergent zones that produce great earthquakes. We applied automated velocity analysis to obtain the accurate seismic profiles needed for precise heat flow estimates using six new seismic profiles acquired during R/V Kaimei KM18-10 voyage in 2018. We calculated heat flow values in the accretionary wedge of the Nankai Trough off the Kii Peninsula, Japan, from the positions of widespread bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) in seismic reflection profiles. Calculated conductive heat flow values from the depth of the BSR agree with previous studies where a regional trend is observed from ~ 50 mW/m2 to < 40 mW/m2 60 km landward from the deformation front. This trend is caused by thickening of accretionary sediments and the subduction of the Philippines Sea plate. Segments of profiles are marked by anomalous high heat flow values. Such anomalies represent alterations of the shallow crustal thermal structure caused either by a combination of topographic affects, surface erosion of the seafloor, or by fluid flow that transports heat by advection. We interpret heat flow anomalies (~ 100 mW/m2) as indicators of active faulting, which correspond to low seismic velocity zones along faults. Our results also showed relatively high heat flow at the landward end of several survey lines close to the Kii Peninsula, which we interpret to the possible presence of plutonic rocks that underlie the Kii Peninsula and extend offshore and may be the cause of geothermal springs, steep geothermal gradients, and high heat flow. In shallow subduction zones, fluid behavior impacts various geodynamic processes capable of regulating slip behaviors and forming mud volcanoes. However, evidence of structures that control the fluid transfer within an overriding plate is limited and the physical properties at the source faults of slow earthquakes are poorly understood. Here we present high-resolution seismic velocity models and reflection images of the Hyuga-nada area, Japan, where the Kyushu-Palau ridge subducts. We image distinct kilometer-wide columns in the upper plate with reduced velocities that extend vertically from the seafloor down to 10–13 km depth. We interpret the low-velocity columns as damaged zones caused by seamount subduction and suggest that they serve as conduits, facilitating vertical fluid migration from the plate boundary. The lateral variation in upper-plate velocity and seismic reflectivity along the plate boundary correlates with the distribution of slow earthquakes, indicating that the upper-plate drainage system controls the complex pattern of seismic slip at subduction faults. Devastating megathrust earthquakes and slow earthquakes both occur along subducting plate interfaces. These interplate seismic activities are strongly dependent on the nature of the plate interface, such as the shape of the plate interface and the materials and physical conditions along the plate interface. The oceanic plate, which is the input to the subduction zone, is the first order control on the nature of the plate interface. To reveal the nature of the subduction inputs to the northeastern Japan arc, we have conducted large-scale controlled-source seismic surveys of the northwestern part of the oceanic Pacific plate. The obtained seismic data have revealed (1) oceanic plate structural evolution caused by plate bending prior to subduction, suggesting the promotion of the oceanic plate hydration; (2) spatial variation of the oceanic plate structure, such as variations in the thickness of sediment and crust; (3) that the spatial variations are caused by both ancient plate formation processes and more recent volcanic activities; and (4) that spatial variations of the nature of the subduction inputs show good correlation with the along-strike variations in the seismic structure and seismic activities after subduction, including the coseismic slip distribution of the 2011 Tohoku earthquakes and the structural differences between the northern and the southern Japan Trench. These observations indicate that the incoming oceanic plate structure is much more spatially variable than previously thought and also imply that the spatial variation of the subduction inputs is a key controlling factor of the spatial variation of various processes in subduction zones, including interplate seismic activities and evolution of the forearc structure. The structure of the incoming plate is an important element that is often considered to be related to the occurrence of great earthquakes in subduction zones. In the Japan Trench, where the 2011 Tohoku earthquake occurred, we collected seismic profiles along survey lines separated by 2–8 km to examine the structural characteristics of the incoming Pacific plate in detail. The average thickness of the incoming sediments was < 500 m along most of the Japan Trench, and it was < 300 m at ~ 38° N, where the large shallow megathrust slip occurred during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. We mapped bending-related normal faults, including their dip direction and amount of throw. The numbers of eastward (oceanward) and westward (trenchward) dipping normal faults were generally comparable in the Japan Trench. Eastward dipping normal faults were dominant in the northern and southern parts of the Japan Trench, whereas westward dipping normal faults were more numerous in the central part. Graben-fill sediments deposited at the landward edge of the graben were bounded by eastward dipping normal faults. Trench-fill sediments were also observed along the trench axis. The sediment fills locally increased the thickness of the input sediments where they were deposited. The along-axis variation in input sediment and sediment fill distribution, and the variations in normal fault dip direction between the central and other parts of the Japan Trench may correspond to different slip styles along the plate boundary. At the northern Cascadia subduction zone, the subducting Explorer and Juan de Fuca plates interact across a transform deformation zone, known as the Nootka fault zone (NFZ). This study continues the Seafloor Earthquake Array Japan Canada Cascadia Experiment to a second phase (SeaJade II) consisting of nine months of recording of earthquakes using ocean-bottom and land-based seismometers. In addition to mapping the distribution of seismicity, including an MW 6.4 earthquake and aftershocks along the previously unknown Nootka Sequence Fault, we also conducted seismic tomography, which delineates the geometry of the shallow subducting Explorer plate (ExP). We derived hundreds of high-quality focal mechanism solutions from the SeaJade II data. The mechanisms manifest a complex regional tectonic state, with normal faulting of the ExP west of the NFZ, left-lateral strike-slip behaviour of the NFZ, and reverse faulting within the overriding plate above the subducting Juan de Fuca plate. Using data from the combined SeaJade I and II catalogs, we have performed double-difference hypocentre relocations and found seismicity lineations to the southeast of, and oriented 18° clockwise from, the subducted NFZ, which we interpret to represent less active small faults off the primary faults of the NFZ. These lineations are not optimally oriented for shear failure in the regional stress field, which we inferred from averaged focal mechanism solutions, and may represent paleo-configurations of the NFZ. Further, active faults interpreted from seismicity lineations within the subducted plate, including the Nootka Sequence Fault, may have originated as conjugate faults within the paleo-NFZ. Since the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake, intra-plate normal-faulting earthquakes, including several M7-class earthquakes, have occurred in the outer trench slope area from the trench to the outer rise along the Japan Trench. Concerns regarding large earthquakes and associated tsunamis have also arisen. Based on aftershock distributions, several outer trench slope normal-faulting earthquakes (hereinafter referred to as outer-rise earthquakes) are likely related to the rupture of multiple faults. However, few observations have clearly shown how multiple faults act during outer-rise earthquakes. During the ocean bottom seismograph (OBS) observations in the outer trench slope area of the central Japan Trench from September 2017 to July 2018, three M6-class normal-faulting earthquakes (Mw 6.2 on September 20, Mw 6.2 on October 06, and Mw 6.0 on November 12) occurred around the OBS network. The near-field OBS observations provided detailed information on hypocenter locations and focal mechanisms of the mainshocks and aftershocks, including immediately after the mainshocks. We investigated the fault configurations of normal-faulting earthquakes based on OBS observations. During the September 2017 earthquake, the mainshock ruptured high-angle normal faults with a dip angle of 65°. Off-fault aftershock activities that were not directly related to the mainshock rupture and could be explained by the stress changes caused by the mainshock were confirmed. However, hypocenter distributions and focal mechanisms of the main and aftershocks of the October and November 2017 earthquakes suggest that the mainshock ruptured multiple faults with various dipping directions, angles, and strike orientations. Lateral spatial variations of weak portions at the plate boundary in subduction zones have been estimated primarily by the distribution of slow earthquakes mainly occurring around seismogenic zones. However, the detailed depth profile of weak faults remains elusive. Here, we deployed six ocean bottom seismometers in the Nankai subduction zone, Japan, to observe reflections originated from drilling vessel Chikyu ship noise (hydroacoustic P wave) that was persistently radiated from a fixed position at the sea surface, and retrieved P-to-s (Ps) reflections from multiple dipping faults near the plate boundary. The Ps amplitudes were stacked and compared according to the degrees of tidal stresses, and high amplitudes were observed at high tide (compression). A migration technique shows that the locations where velocity contrasts fluctuate were estimated at both the megasplay fault and another fault between the megasplay fault and the top of the oceanic crust. This indicates that the physical properties of these faults are altered by tidal stress. The physical-property changes are attributed to fluid connections and isolations within the faults due to tidal stress fluctuations, inducing the variation of seismic anisotropy. Such a variation was confirmed by a three-dimensional numerical simulation for wave propagation with anisotropic medium. Our observation suggests that multiple weak faults are present around the plate boundary, and the obtained changes of fault physical properties may have implications for in-depth understanding of tidal triggering of earthquakes. A ship-based seismic survey was conducted close to a fiber-optic submarine cable, and 50 km-long distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) recordings with air-gun shots were obtained for the first time. We examine the acquired DAS dataset together with the co-located hydrophones to investigate the detection capability of underwater acoustic (hydroacoustic) signals. Here, we show the hydroacoustic signals identified by the DAS measurement characterizing in frequency-time space. The DAS measurement can be sensitive for hydroacoustic signals in a frequency range from 10 - 1 Hz to a few tens of Hz which is similar to the hydrophones. The observed phases of hydroacoustic signals are coherent within a few kilometers along the submarine cable, suggesting the DAS is suitable for applying correlation analysis using hydroacoustic signals. Although our study suggests that virtual sensor's self-noise of the present DAS measurement is relatively high compared to the conventional in-situ hydroacoustic sensors above a few Hz, the DAS identifies the ocean microseismic background noise along the entire submarine cable except for some cable sections de-coupled from the seafloor. Since the giant 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, much research has focused on the distribution of coseismic slip at shallow depths during this subduction megathrust event. Here we present seismic images obtained in the immediate vicinity of the trench axis, that show thrust faults and fold-and-thrust type deformation structures near the epicenter of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake where the large coseismic slip has been inferred, and chaotic structure and the absence of thrust faults in northern and southern source areas. Seismic profiles show evidence of slope failures of the trench inner wall in a proposed tsunami source region around 39°–40° N, where the slips estimated from previous studies are in disagreement. Our results show that structural characteristics in the trench axis may be related to the occurrence of shallow megathrust slip and tsunamigenesis in the Japan Trench. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand temperature structure or magma distribution in the crust and uppermost mantle, it is essential to know their attenuation structure. This study estimated the 3-D S-wave attenuation structure in the crust and uppermost mantle at the northern Izu-Bonin arc, taking into account the apparent attenuation due to multiple forward scattering. In the uppermost mantle, two areas of high seismic attenuation (high Q) imaged beneath the volcanic front were mostly colocated with low-velocity anomalies. This coincidence suggests that these high- Q areas in low-velocity zones are the most likely candidates for high-temperature regions beneath volcanoes. The distribution of random inhomogeneities indicated the presence of three anomalies beneath the volcanic front: Two were in high- Q areas but the third was in a moderate- Q area, indicating a low correlation between random inhomogeneities and Q. All three anomalies of random inhomogeneities were rich in short-wavelength spectra. The most probable interpretation of such spectra is the presence of volcanic rock, which would be related to accumulated magma intrusion during episodes of volcanic activity. Therefore, the different distributions of Q and random inhomogeneities imply that the positions of hot regions in the uppermost mantle beneath this arc have changed temporally; therefore, they may provide important constraints on the evolutionary processes of arc crust and volcanoes. A long-standing question about the dynamics of mid-ocean spreading centres is whether mantle upwelling is passive or active. During passive upwelling, the motion of the overlying plate would be expected to drive mantle flow. In contrast, during active upwelling, decompression melting of the mantle beneath the spreading axis would result in a low-density melt that creates local buoyancy, forcing mantle convection and driving plate motion. Seismic images of older parts of the Pacific Plate reveal dipping reflectors in the lower crust that could be shear zones created by active mantle flow, but there is little seismological evidence to indicate that mantle flow drags the plate. Here we use active-source seismic data to image the Pacific Plate that was created at a palaeo-spreading centre in the northwest Pacific Ocean. We identify very high P-wave velocities of 8.5-8.6 km s−1 and strong seismic anisotropy of 8.5-9.8% in the uppermost mantle, immediately below the lower-crustal dipping reflectors. We suggest that such strong seismic anisotropy, caused by the alignment of olivine crystals in response to mantle flow, could have been generated if mantle flow was much faster than plate motion. We conclude that both the lower-crustal dipping reflectors and the anisotropy were formed by a drag force at the Moho caused by rapid mantle flow, providing direct evidence for active mantle flow at a spreading centre. On the Vøring volcanic passive margin offshore mid-Norway, NE Atlantic, a lower crustal body with P-wave velocities in the range of 7.1–7.7 km/s has been mapped by twenty two-dimensional Ocean Bottom Seismograph (OBS) profiles. The main aim of the present paper is to evaluate to what extent the lower crust is consistent with magmatic intrusions or serpentinized peridotite. The relatively low Vp/ Vs ratios of 1.75–1.78 modelled for the lower crust under the continental part of the Vøring Plateau are consistent with mafic intrusions mixed with blocks of stretched continental crust, but not with the presence of partially serpentinized peridotites. The lower crustal high-velocity body is restricted to the area of the Late Cretaceous/Early Tertiary rift that lead to continental break-up in Early Eocene. The same model can explain the observations in the northern Vøring Basin, but in the central and southern Vøring Basin the seismic velocities do not preclude a model involving serpentinized peridotite in addition to intrusions and continental remnants. On the west Iberia non-volcanic margin a similar layer is interpreted as serpentinized peridotite. The existence of Moho reflections, the observation of S-wave anisotropy but absence of P-wave anisotropy, uncertainties regarding supply of water to allow for significant serpentinization and very low stretching factors compared with the west Iberia Margin, are among factors that argue against the presence of serpentinized peridotite in the Vøring Basin. The horizontal components from twenty Ocean Bottom Seismometers deployed along three profiles near the Kolbeinsey Ridge, North Atlantic, have been modelled with regard to S-waves, based on P-wave models obtained earlier. Two profiles were acquired parallel to the ridge, and the third profile extended eastwards across the continental Jan Mayen Basin. The modelling requires a thin (few 100 m) layer with very high Vp/ Vs-ratio (3.5–9.5) at the sea-floor in the area lacking sedimentary cover. The obtained Vp/ Vs-ratios for the remaining part of layer 2A, 2B, 3 and upper mantle, correspond to the following lithologies: pillow lavas, sheeted dykes, gabbro and peridotite, respectively. All crustal layers exhibit a decreasing trend in Vp/ Vs-ratio away-from-the-axis, interpreted as decreasing porosity and/or crack density in that direction. A significant S-wave azimuthal anisotropy is observed within the thin uppermost layer of basalt near the ridge. The anisotropy is interpreted as being caused by fluid-filled microcracks aligned along the direction of present-day maximum compressive stress, and indicates crustal extension at the ridge itself and perpendicular-to-the-ridge compression 12 km off axis. Spreading along the Kolbeinsey Ridge has most likely been continuous since its initiation ca. 25 Ma: The data do not suggest the presence of an extinct spreading axis between the Kolbeinsey Ridge and the Aegir Ridge as has been proposed earlier. The Vp/ Vs-ratios found in the Jan Mayen Basin are compatible with continental crust, overlain by a sedimentary section dominated by shale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 140 km long wide-angle seismic profile has been acquired by use of 6 Ocean Bottom Seismographs across the Jan Mayen Ridge, North Atlantic. The profile was acquired twice; once with a traditionally tuned standard source and secondly with a somewhat smaller source tuned on the first bubble pulse. Analysis of the frequency content of the data reveals that the single-bubble source within the 10-15 Hz frequency range generates a signal with a level about 5 db above that of the standard source. These differences can partly be related to differences in airgun depth. The higher output level for these frequencies enables the single-bubble source to resolve intra-crustal structures with a higher degree of certainty, when compared to the data acquired by use of the standard source array. The standard source seems to generate slightly more energy for frequencies around 6 Hz, probably due to the use of a large 1200 in/sup3 gun in this array. These low frequencies a re of importance for mapping of lower crustal and upper mantle structures, and it is recommended that this is taken into account when seismic sources for mapping of deep crustal and upper mantle structures are designed. Hydration of the subducting oceanic plate determines the amount of water transported from Earth’s surface into its interior, and plate bending-related faulting (bend faulting) just prior to subduction is considered to promote hydration. Bend faulting shows significant spatial variation, but its contribution to hydration is still poorly understood. Here we present the results of controlled-source seismic surveys around the junction of the Japan and Kuril trenches. We found structural changes caused by bend faulting before subduction differed distinctly between both trenches and were well correlated with plate hydration after subduction, suggesting the bend faulting controls spatial variations in plate hydration. Differences in bend faulting are closely related to the angle between the current trench and the ancient spreading ridge, and the hydration is more extensive where this trench-ridge angle is oblique in the study area. Thus, we propose this angle is a major factor controlling plate hydration. Bend faulting prior to subduction is considered to promote hydration, yet the relationship remains ambiguous. Here, via analysis of seismic surveys from the Japan and Kuril trenches junction, the authors show that pre-subduction bend faulting and post-subduction plate hydration are strongly correlated. To estimate strong ground motions caused by future earthquakes in Japan and to more accurately predict seismic hazards and tsunamis, it is necessary to accurately model the geometry of the subducting plate and the seismic velocity structure around Japan, particularly in offshore areas. Although various seismic velocity structure and plate boundary models have been proposed around Japan, they are all managed individually and differ in extent, data type, and format. Ensuring consistency among those models requires knowledge of their spatial distribution around the subduction zones of Japan. Here, we describe a database system to store and serve various velocity structure and plate geometry datasets from around Japan. Seismic structure models in this database include 3D seismic velocity models obtained by seismic tomography, 3D plate geometry models, 2D seismic velocity structure models, 2D plate geometry models obtained by offshore seismic surveys, and hypocenter distributions determined by offshore observations and the Japan Meteorological Agency. Using this database (currently available only in Japanese), users can obtain data from several structural models at once in the form of the original model data, equal-interval gridded data in a text file, and Keyhole Markup Language (KML) data. Users can grasp the distributions of all available seismic models and hypocenters using a web-based interface, simultaneously view various models and hypocenters as KML output files in Google Earth, and easily and freely handle the structural models in a selected area of interest using the gridded text-file output data. Seismic refraction and multi-channel seismic reflection surveys were conducted on the northeastern Hawaiian Arch to examine the effect of hotspot volcanism on the seismic structure of the crust and uppermost mantle. The crustal thickness deduced from the refraction data was typical for oceanic crust, which suggests that magmatic underplating does not occur, at least in our survey area, although the crustal seismic velocity may be influenced by flexure of the lithosphere on the arch. We identified high P-wave velocities (~ 8.65 km/s) in the uppermost mantle parallel to the paleo-seafloor spreading direction, which indicates that the shallower mantle structure immediately below the Moho preserves the original structure formed at a mid-ocean ridge. Moreover, we observed wide-angle reflection waves at large offsets in ocean-bottom seismometer records. The travel time analysis results showed that these waves were reflected from mantle reflectors at depths of 30-85 km below the seafloor, which are considered to represent heterogeneities consisting of frozen melts created during the cooling of the plate. The uppermost structures of incoming oceanic plates have been investigated by seismic exploration surveys, primarily based on two-dimensional profiles. However, their regional-scale lateral variations and shear wave velocity structures with higher-frequency components remain elusive. This study, using passive seismic records, attempted to retrieve Po-to-s converted waves (Pos) by cross-correlating Po wave coda from the radial and vertical components in the 2-6 Hz frequency band and to show lateral variations of the shear wave velocity within the oceanic crust, including crust-related seismic interfaces and layer-dependent anisotropic structures. Po waves were collected from continuous records acquired from active seismic surveys performed across wide areas of the Northwestern Pacific over shorter observation periods and passive seismic surveys performed near the Japan Trench over longer observation periods. As a result, this study obtained clear Pos waves converted at the basement and oceanic Moho of the seaward region, whereas weakened or no Pos waves were observed at ocean bottom seismometers near the trench. The primary reasons for Pos wave weakening or absence were considered to be structural changes, including normal faults due to the plate flexures in the outer-rise region, hydration at the uppermost oceanic plate, and fractures associated with volcanic activities that can be seen on the oceanic plate (petit spots). Furthermore, layer-dependent shear wave anisotropies were estimated for the sediment and crust. Fast polarization directions were oriented in trench-parallel directions near the trench and in the NNW-SSE directions in the seaward region. The pattern change to near-trench polarization directions would correspond to stress field-induced aligned fractures, including cracks and normal faults, created by stress fields induced by plate bending in the outer-rise region. Megathrust earthquakes have occurred repeatedly at intervals of 100 to 150 years along the Nankai Trough, situated in the southwest of Japan. Given that it has been 70 years since the last event, the occurrence of the next devastating earthquake is anticipated in the near future. On April 1, 2016, a moderate earthquake (Mw 5.9, MJMA 6.5) occurred off the southeastern coast of Mie Prefecture in the source region of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake (Mw 8.2). In this study, we investigated the influence of the 2016 earthquake on future megathrust earthquakes. We first determined the hypocenter distributions using a precise velocity structure obtained from seismic surveys in the source region. Using data obtained from the DONET ocean-bottom observation network, we found that this earthquake occurred along the plate boundary fault, which is also believed to have slipped during past megathrust earthquakes. We then performed a preliminary numerical simulation to reproduce the occurrence of a moderate earthquake in the middle of a megathrust earthquake cycle. We used a hierarchical asperity model, in which smaller asperities causing moderate earthquakes are embedded in a hyper-asperity that serves as the source region of megathrust earthquakes. The simulation shows that moderate earthquakes, caused by ruptures of a smaller asperity, occur as a result of shrinkage of strongly coupled areas in the hyper-asperity. This result is consistent with the observation that the hypocenter of the 2016 earthquake was located at the edge of a strongly coupled region along the plate boundary. The simulation also reproduced postseismic slip (afterslip/slow slip) along the plate boundary updip of the hyper-asperity, which is consistent with the observations of slow slip events and very-low-frequency earthquakes after the 2016 earthquake. Thus, the occurrence of the moderate earthquake offshore southeastern Mie Prefecture in the middle of the megathrust earthquake cycle implies that the shrinkage of the strongly coupled area along the plate boundary is occurring as a preparatory process for the next megathrust earthquake in the region. Tectonic and volcanic structures of the northern Ryukyu arc are investigated on the basis of multichannel seismic (MCS) reflection data. The study area forms an active volcanic front in parallel to the non-volcanic island chain in the eastern margin of the Eurasian plate and has been undergoing regional extension on its back-arc side. We carried out a MCS reflection experiment along two across-arc lines, and one of the profiles was laid out across the Tokara Channel, a linear bathymetric depression which demarcates the northern and central Ryukyu arcs. The reflection image reveals that beneath this topographic valley there exists a ~ 3-km-deep sedimentary basin atop the arc crust, suggesting that the arc segment boundary was formed by rapid and focused subsidence of the arc crust driven by the arc-parallel extension. Around the volcanic front, magmatic conduits represented by tubular transparent bodies in the reflection images are well developed within the shallow sediments and some of them are accompanied by small fragments of dipping seismic reflectors indicating intruded sills at their bottoms. The spatial distribution of the conduits may suggest that the arc volcanism has multiple active outlets on the seafloor which bifurcate at crustal depths and/or that the location of the volcanic front has been migrating trenchward over time. Further distant from the volcanic front toward the back-arc (> 30 km away), these volcanic features vanish, and alternatively wide rift basins become predominant where rapid transitions from normal-fault-dominant regions to strike-slip-fault-dominant regions occur. This spatial variation in faulting patterns indicates complex stress regimes associated with arc/back-arc rifting in the northern Okinawa Trough. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
