Patient reported outcomes is currently considered to be an important supplement to evaluate the effectiveness of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) clinical practice. The Quality of Recovery-40 Questionnaire (QoR-40) is one of the most frequently used and validation tool to assess the subjective feelings of quality of life after surgery. The present study aimed to use the QoR-40 to evaluate the effectiveness of ERAS protocols in gastric cancer from the perspective of patient-reported quality of recovery. The study was designed as a prospective, non-randomized clinical trial, conducted in a single center. Patients in our hospital who were scheduled to undergo radical surgery for gastric cancer were divided into ERAS group and control group (Contr group). The QoR-40 were administered one day before surgery (Baseline) and on postoperative day 1, 3, 6, and 30. The difference in QoR-40 scores between the ERAS and Contr groups was compared by repeated-measures ANOVA. A total of 200 patients completed the study, including 100 patients in the ERAS group and 100 patients in the Contr group. The Baseline time point QoR-40 scores of the ERAS and Contr groups were 179.68 ± 14.46 and 180.12 ± 17.12, respectively, and no significant difference was noted between the two groups (p = 0.845). The postoperative QoR-40 score of the ERAS group was significantly higher than that of the Contr group, and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.006). This study demonstrated that, in terms of patient-reported quality of recovery, the postoperative recovery effect of ERAS protocols in gastric cancer is significantly better than that of the traditional treatment model. Background and aim: Previous studies reported inconsistent results on the prevalence and prognostic implications of frailty among older adults with gastric cancer. This systematic review synthesized available literature pertaining on this topic to establish the prevalence and unfavorable outcomes of frailty in older adults with gastric cancer. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across multiple English databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, Embase, and Web of Science as well as Chinese databases, namely, CNKI, Wan Fang, and CBM, from inception to July 4, 2023, to identify potential studies. Data related to the incidence of frailty and its unfavorable outcomes in older adults with gastric cancer were extracted. RevMan5.3 and R 4.2.2 were used to evaluate pooled prevalence, hazard ratios (HR), and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: This review comprehensively selected 13 studies, comprising 9 cohort studies and 4 cross-sectional studies, on 44,117 older adults diagnosed with gastric cancer. The incidence of frailty among older adults with gastric cancer ranged from 10 to 71%. The pooled prevalence of frailty was 29% (95% CI 0.21–0.39). Frailty was found to be associated with an elevated risk of postoperative complications (HR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.45–2.73), prolonged postoperative hospital stay (HR = 2.68, 95% CI 2.38–3.02), likelihood of readmission (HR = 3.28, 95% CI 1.77–6.08), and an increased mortality risk (HR = 1.60, 95% CI 1.36–1.90). Conclusions: Frailty was associated with a poor prognosis in older adults with gastric cancer. Clinical medical staff should focus on the frailty of older adults with gastric cancer, conduct large-scale, multicenter, and prospective studies and early screening of patients, and provide guidance for the implementation of prevention and treatment strategies. Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) consists of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Rivaroxaban is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) inhibiting activated coagulation factor X (FXa), and exerts several advantages in the treatment of VTE compared to conventional therapy. However, the efficacy and safety of rivaroxaban in elderly patients with VTE was still poorly understood. Methods: The study was carried out using an observational and non-interventional approach. A total of 576 patients aged ≥ 60 years with newly diagnosed VTE were included in the study. All patients received rivaroxaban with recommended treatment duration of ≥ 3 months for secondary prevention. In addition, 535 elderly patients with various diseases except VTE were included in the study in a retrospective and randomized way. Results: The total bleeding rate was 12.2% (70/576). Major bleeding and non-major clinically relevant (NMCR) bleeding occurred in 4 (0.69%) patients and 5 (0.87%) patients, respectively. The rate of recurrent VTE was 5.4%. The mean level of D-dimers was increased by 467.2% in the elderly patients with VTE compared with the elderly patients without VTE. The elderly patients with VTE receiving rivaroxaban at a dose of 10 mg once daily (n = 134) had lower risk for bleeding (3.7% vs 14.7%; P = 0.001) and a similar rate of recurrent VTE (4.5% vs 5.7%; P = 0.596) as compared to the elderly patients with VTE receiving rivaroxaban at higher doses including 15 mg once daily and 20 mg once daily (n = 442). In addition, age, concomitant aspirin, hemoglobin, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and rivaroxaban doses were independent predictive factors for bleeding events. Conclusions: The study suggested that a dose of 10 mg once daily should be the priority in elderly patients with VTE receiving long-term rivaroxaban anticoagulation therapy in view of reduced bleeding risk. Objective : This study was conducted to examine the factors associated with stigma in breast cancer women. Methods: PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and two Chinese electronic databases were electronically searched to identify eligible studies that reported the correlates of stigma for patients with breast cancer from inception to July 2022. Two researchers independently performed literature screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment. R4.1.1 software was used for statistical analysis. Results: Twenty articles including 4161 patients were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. Results showed that breast cancer stigma was positively correlated with working status, type of surgery, resignation coping, depression, ambivalence over emotional expression, and delayed help-seeking behavior and negatively correlated with age, education, income, quality of life, social support, confrontation coping, psychological adaptation, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Descriptive analysis showed that breast cancer stigma was positively correlated with intrusive thoughts, body image, anxiety, and self-perceived burden but negatively correlated with a sense of coherence, personal acceptance of the disease, sleep quality, cancer screening attendance and doctor’s empathy. Conclusion: Many demographic, disease-related, and psychosocial variables are related to breast cancer stigma. Curcumin (Cur) is widely used as an anti-inflammation agent and has anti-depression potential. Neuroinflammation mediated by Ca2+ channel activation is closely associated with the progression of post-stroke depression (PSD). In the current study, the role of P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) in the anti-PSD function of Cur was explored. Rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) surgery and chronic mild stress administration to induce PSD symptoms and then treated with Cur. The behaviors of rats were assessed with sucrose preference and forced swim tests. The accumulation of Ca2+ and the systemic inflammatory response in rats were detected. To determine the role of P2X7R in the anti-PSD function of curcumin, the PSD mice were further administrated with P2X7R agonist and antagonist. The administration of Cur attenuated behavior disorders associated with PSD. Moreover, the Ca2+ accumulation and the inflammatory response associated with PSD were also blocked by Cur. Cur also inhibited the activation of Ca2+ channel. The induced activity of P2X7R blocked the function of Cur by maintaining the symptoms of PSD in Cur-treated rats. Collectively, the anti-PSD function of Cur was dependent on the inhibition of P2X7R, which then deactivated Ca2+ channel-mediated inflammatory response associated with PSD progression. The widespread use of thiram has raised concerns for health and its toxic effects, but the underlying toxicity mechanism on platelets and bones is poorly defined. Here, we found a significant increase in the number of platelets in chickens with the thiram intake, due to the increased expression of thrombopoietin mRNA in the dysfunction liver. Furthermore, the decreased vascular distribution and cell death of chondrocytes in the tibial growth plates (TGPs) were observed, resulting in bone growth inhibition, which is associated with the abnormal activation of platelets leading to the extraordinary decrease of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) and angiopoietin-1 protein were released and their corresponding receptors VEGFR2 and Tie-2 expressions were also reduced in the TGPs. Taken together, these findings revealed that thiram has an adverse effect on bones and platelets, which may have a high risk of thrombosis and osteoarthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Feature-based object matching is a fundamental problem for many applications in computer vision, such as object recognition, 3D reconstruction, tracking, and motion segmentation. In this work, we consider simultaneously matching object instances in a set of images, where both inlier and outlier features are extracted. The task is to identify the inlier features and establish their consistent correspondences across the image set. This is a challenging combinatorial problem, and the problem complexity grows exponentially with the image number. To this end, we propose a novel framework, termed Robust Object Matching using Low-rank constraint (ROML), to address this problem. ROML optimizes simultaneously a partial permutation matrix (PPM) for each image, and feature correspondences are established by the obtained PPMs. Two of our key contributions are summarized as follows. (1) We formulate the problem as rank and sparsity minimization for PPM optimization, and treat simultaneous optimization of multiple PPMs as a regularized consensus problem in the context of distributed optimization. (2) We use the alternating direction method of multipliers method to solve the thus formulated ROML problem, in which a subproblem associated with a single PPM optimization appears to be a difficult integer quadratic program (IQP). We prove that under wildly applicable conditions, this IQP is equivalent to a linear sum assignment problem, which can be efficiently solved to an exact solution. Extensive experiments on rigid/non-rigid object matching, matching instances of a common object category, and common object localization show the efficacy of our proposed method. Objective: The aim of this research was to explore quality of life (QoL), mental health status, type D personality, symptom duration, and emergency admissions of Chinese rectal cancer patients as well as the relationship between these factors. Methods: Type D personality was measured with the 14-item Type D Personality Scale (DS14). Mental health status was measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The QoL outcomes were assessed longitudinally using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer QLQ-C30 and QLQ-CR38 questionnaires at the baseline and 6 months after diagnosis. Results: Of the 852 survivors who responded (94 %), 187 (22 %) had a type D personality. The proportion of patients with duration of symptoms >1 month and being diagnosed after emergency admissions in type D group is significantly higher than that in non-type D group. At both of the time points, type D patients reported statistically significant lower scores on most of the functional scales, global health status/QoL scales, and worse symptom scores compared to patients without a type D personality. At the 6-month time point, a higher percentage of patients in the type D group demonstrated QoL deterioration. Clinically elevated levels of anxiety and depression were more prevalent in type D than in non-type D survivors. Conclusions: Type D personality was associated with poor QoL and mental health status among survivors of rectal cancer, even after adjustment for confounding background variables. Objective: To evaluate the effects of ginsenoside Rg-1 on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) and to explore the possible application on the alveolar bone regeneration. Methods: To determine the optimum concentration, the effects of ginsenoside Rg-1 ranging from 10 to 100 μmol/L were evaluated by 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide, alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium deposition. Expressions of runt-related transcription factor 2, collagen alpha-2(I) chain, osteopontin, osteocalcin protein were examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results: Compared with the control group, a certain concentration (10 μmol/L) of the Rg-1 solution significantly enhanced the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs ( P<0.05). However, concentrations that exceeds 100 μmol/L led to cytotoxicity whereas concentrations below 10 nmol/L showed no significant effect as compared with the control. Conclusion: Ginsenoside Rg-1 can enhance the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs at an optimal concentration of 10 μmol/L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a regularized patch-based representation for single sample per person face recognition. We represent each image by a collection of patches and seek their sparse representations under the gallery images patches and intra-class variance dictionaries at the same time. For the reconstruction coefficients of all the patches from the same image, by imposing a group sparsity constraint on the reconstruction coefficients corresponding to the patches from the gallery images, and by imposing a sparsity constraint on the reconstruction coefficients corresponding to the intra-class variance dictionaries, our formulation harvests the advantages of both patch-based image representation and global image representation, i.e. our method overcomes the side effect of those patches which are severely corrupted by the variances in face recognition, while enforcing those less discriminative patches to be constructed by the gallery patches from the right person. Moreover, instead of using the manually designed intra-class variance dictionaries, we propose to learn the intra-class variance dictionaries which not only greatly accelerate the prediction of the probe images but also improve the face recognition accuracy in the single sample per person scenario. Experimental results on the AR, Extended Yale B, CMU-PIE, and LFW datasets show that our method outperforms sparse coding related face recognition methods as well as some other specially designed single sample per person face representation methods, and achieves the best performance. Purpose: No consensus has been reached to define gastrointestinal failure (GIF) associated with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Reintam and colleagues proposed a scoring system of GIF for critically ill patients, but its suitability for patients with SAP is questionable. The present study evaluates a modified GIF score we developed to assess the GIF of patients with SAP. Methods: The subjects of this study were 52 patients with SAP treated between September 2010 and July 2011. We recorded the Reintam's GIF score, our modified GIF score, the acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score, the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score, and other clinical values during the first 3 days after admission. The prognostic value of the modified GIF score, for evaluating the severity and outcomes of SAP, was also assessed. Results: Compared with the Reintam's GIF score, the modified GIF score seemed to be more valuable for predicting hospital mortality (the area under curve, AUC 0.915 vs. 0.850), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) (AUC 0.829 vs. 0.766), and pancreatic infection (AUC 0.796 vs. 0.776). Moreover, combining the modified GIF score and the SOFA or APACHEII scores resulted in more accurate prediction of the prognosis of SAP than either score alone. Conclusion: The modified GIF score is useful for assessing gastrointestinal system function, which may serve as an early prognostic tool to evaluate the severity and predict the outcomes of SAP. The flower-like Zn(OH)F particle has six petals and every petal is composed of lots of acicular nano-structure. Nanoporous ZnO is obtained by thermal decomposition of as-prepared Zn(OH)F in air, and the flower-like morphology is well retained. This study was conducted to investigate prognosis and survival of patients undergoing distal subtotal gastrectomy with D2 and D2+ lymphadenectomy for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. Overall survival rates of 416 patients with locally advanced gastric cancer were compared between D2 and D2+ lymphadenectomy. Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis was used to identify significant prognostic factors correlated with LN metastasis and prognosis. Univariate analysis identified tumor size, lymphatic vessel invasion, pT stage, pN stage, TNM stage, locoregional recurrence, and distant recurrence, to significantly correlate with prognosis; Tumor size, LVI, and pT stage were identified as independent factors correlating with LN metastasis. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that tumor size, pT stage, pN stage, locoregional recurrence, and distant recurrence were independent prognostic factors; Tumor size and pT stage were independent prognostic factors predicting LN metastasis. When comparing 5-year survival rates of patients who underwent D2 and D2+ lymphadenectomy, as stratified by pT stage and pN stage, a significant difference was found in pN3 patients, but not for pT2-4 and pN0-2 patients, or the patient cohort as a whole. In conclusion, D2 lymphadenectomy for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer undergoing distal subtotal gastrectomy was recommended, especially in eastern Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
