Background: COVID-19 pandemic is thought to have changed the epidemiology of some pediatric neurosurgical disease: among them are the intracranial complications of sinusitis and otitis (ICSO). According to some studies on a limited number of cases, both streptococci-related sinusitis and ICSO would have increased immediately after the pandemic, although the reason is not clear yet (seasonal changes versus pandemic-related effects). The goal of the present survey of the European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN) was to collect a large number of cases from different European countries encompassing the pre-COVID (2017–2019), COVID (2020–2021), and post-COVID period (2022–June 2023) looking for possible epidemiological and/or clinical changes. Material and methods: An English language questionnaire was sent to ESPN members about year of the event, patient's age and gender, presence of immune-deficit or other favoring risk factors, COVID infection, signs and symptoms at onset, site of primary infection, type of intracranial complication, identified germ, type and number of surgical operations, type and duration of medical treatment, clinical and radiological outcome, duration of the follow-up. Results: Two hundred fifty-four cases were collected by 30 centers coming from 14 different European countries. There was a statistically significant difference between the post-COVID period (129 children, 86 cases/year, 50.7% of the whole series) and the COVID (40 children, 20 cases/year, 15.7%) or the pre-COVID period (85 children, 28.3 cases/year, 33.5%). Other significant differences concerned the presence of predisposing factors/concurrent diseases (higher in the pre-COVID period) and previous COVID infection (higher in the post-COVID period). No relevant differences occurred as far as demographic, microbiological, clinical, radiological, outcome, morbidity, and mortality data were concerned. Paranasal sinuses and middle ear/mastoid were the most involved primary site of infection (71% and 27%, respectively), while extradural or subdural empyema and brain abscess were the most common ICSO (73% and 17%, respectively). Surgery was required in 95% of cases (neurosurgical and ENT procedure in 71% and 62% of cases, respectively) while antibiotics in 99% of cases. After a 12.4-month follow-up, a full clinical and radiological recovery was obtained in 85% and 84% of cases, respectively. The mortality rate was 2.7%. Conclusions: These results suggest that the occurrence of ICSO was significantly increased after the pandemic. Such an increase seems to be related to the indirect effects of the pandemic (e.g., immunity debt) rather than to a direct effect of COVID infection or to seasonal fluctuations. ICSO remain challenging diseases but the pandemic did not affect the management strategies nor their prognosis. The epidemiological change of sinusitis/otitis and ICSO should alert about the appropriate follow-up of children with sinusitis/otitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Space Systems have been historically characterised by high performance, high reliability and high cost. Every new generation of space systems tends to improve performance, keep as much as possible reliability, speeding the lead time and lower the cost. Aggressive approach is nowadays followed by some of the players of the new space ecosystem where, for instance, reliability can be relaxed thanks for the in-orbit redundancy or robustness to failures by having a constellation with a high number of satellites. This push towards the technology and system limit requires to investigate new methods for the manufacturing of RF/Microwave parts. RF devices such as those based on waveguide structures, benefit from an additive manufacturing approach in terms of radio frequency (RF) performance and compactness. However each manufacturing approach comes with specific features and limitations which need to be well understood and, in some cases, even taking advantage of them. This paper provides a short review of some of the RF/Microwave parts already manufactured using this technology. Intracranial hypertension may be idiopathic or due to multiple etiologies. Some bone dysplasias and chronic shunt overdrainage syndrome may sometimes lead to intracranial hypertension associated with craniocerebral disproportion due to thickening of cranial diploe. The internal cranial expansion procedure has been used for patients with intracranial hypertension, whether or not associated with craniocerebral disproportion. Its purpose is to increase the intracranial volume by drilling down the inner table. This technique enables the craniocerebral disproportion to be improved and intracranial hypertension reduced. In other etiologies of intracranial hypertension with non-thickened diploe, internal cranial expansion may not be enough to resolve the hypertension. For these cases we propose a modification of the technique by expanding the cranial vault outwards; external cranial expansion. We describe this technique as used in a pediatric patient who presented with chronic headache, tonsillar ectopia, and sleep apnea syndrome. In this work, we investigated the effect of doping zinc ions onto nickel ferrite upon the structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of Ni1 − xZnxFe2O4 ferrite nanoparticles (x = 0, 0.25, and 0.75) prepared via co-precipitation method. X-ray diffraction analysis showed the presence of the most intense peak corresponding to the (311) crystallographic orientation of NiFe2O4 cubic spinel phase, and the crystallite size obtained from Scherrer formula increased from 6.8 to 11.2 nm when the Zn concentration increases from x = 0 to x = 0.75. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of a prominent band associated to the vibrations of metal ions, as a feature of spinel ferrite phase formation, observing that their band positions were very sensitive to Zn doping concentration. Transmission electron microscopy studies allowed to determinate that for all Zn concentrations, the particle sizes are around 15 nm. The magnetic properties were studied by using the vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. The results reveal superparamagnetic behavior determined by the shape of the hysteresis loop, presenting decreased coercive magnetic field and increased saturation magnetization, with increased zinc concentration. Additionally, from field cooling and zero field cooling curves, we can observe the typical behavior of the blocking process assembly of superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Alternate current susceptibility measurements show that the blocking temperature is frequency dependent and shifts toward higher temperatures by increasing the frequency, a characteristic of superparamagnetic, and glassy systems. Furthermore, τ0, related to the jump attempt frequency of the magnetic moment of the nanoparticle between the opposite directions of the magnetization easy axis, is in the range of 2 × 10−10 and 7 × 10−13 s for the three different Zn concentrations, which agrees with characteristic of non-interacting superparamagnetic systems. A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method with electrochemical detection (ED) using a monolithic column was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantitative determination of aniline, 2-aminobiphenyl, and 4-aminobiphenyl in diphenylamine samples. The proposed HPLC method provides a shorter analysis time as compared to previously reported ones (less than 4 min). Method validation was performed in terms of sensitivity, repeatability, linearity, accuracy, detection limit, and quantification limit. It is found that the method has high accuracy and precision. The limits of detection obtained were 0.23 ng/mL for aniline and 0.30 ng/mL for 2-aminobiphenyl, 4-aminobiphenyl, and diphenylamine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Survival under selective pressure is driven by the ability of our brain to use sensory information to our advantage to control physiological needs. To that end, neural circuits receive and integrate external environmental cues and internal metabolic signals to form learned sensory associations, consequently motivating and adapting our behaviour. The dopaminergic midbrain plays a crucial role in learning adaptive behaviour and is particularly sensitive to peripheral metabolic signals, including intestinal peptides, such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). In a single-blinded, randomized, controlled, crossover basic human functional magnetic resonance imaging study relying on a computational model of the adaptive learning process underlying behavioural responses, we show that adaptive learning is reduced when metabolic sensing is impaired in obesity, as indexed by reduced insulin sensitivity (participants: N = 30 with normal insulin sensitivity; N = 24 with impaired insulin sensitivity). Treatment with the GLP-1 receptor agonist liraglutide normalizes impaired learning of sensory associations in men and women with obesity. Collectively, our findings reveal that GLP-1 receptor activation modulates associative learning in people with obesity via its central effects within the mesoaccumbens pathway. These findings provide evidence for how metabolic signals can act as neuromodulators to adapt our behaviour to our body's internal state and how GLP-1 receptor agonists work in clinics., (© 2023.
