With this paper, we aim to look into the issue of identities among the immigrant population living in the West using an integrative multimodal approach. Although this topic has been in fashion for quite some time, most studies analyze either the political or mass-media discourse related to immigrants or reflect on how immigrants see themselves, on the basis of textual analysis of immigrants' narratives and interviews. Our study takes a different approach and analyzes a video recorded and published on YouTube, focusing not only on the text but also on by analyzing non-verbal manifestations of changing positions on the part of the narrator. In particular, we examine identities/positions that the main protagonist, a Moroccan immigrant named Omar, assumes in the course of the story. We show how one particular gesture (pointing), coupled with other verbal and non-verbal markers, can signal a change of identity/position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents new results on the identities satisfied by the sylvester and Baxter monoids. We show how to embed these monoids, of any rank strictly greater than 2, into a direct product of copies of the corresponding monoid of rank 2. This confirms that all monoids of the same family, of rank greater than or equal to 2, satisfy exactly the same identities. We then give a complete characterization of those identities, and prove that the varieties generated by the sylvester and the Baxter monoids have finite axiomatic rank, by giving a finite basis for them. West African borderlands constitute both real and imagined space for negotiating, or enforcing (im)mobilities and migrant agency. The borders are more than border posts, than policed sites. Insecurity does not originate at the borders but that is where it materializes, including human trafficking, smuggling, drug peddling, and illegal arms transfers. This reality implicates the two opposing extremities—how to reify the power of the state to protect migrants, and at the same time positively control migration, amidst migrants' attempt to negotiate their destination routes, by legal or illegal means. What layers of contradictions or conflicts manifest at the intersection of migrants' mobility capital and the state's exercise of governmobility? We observe that even as the state, being the securitizing actor, re-securitizes migration and shrinks the mobility scape, many new migrant identities emerge and blend into host society. This special collection thus provides deeper insights and interesting perspectives on "mobility-politics"—particularly the relations of power and practices of governing these interrelationships in multiple forms and in different spatiotemporal contexts. The collection reiterates the logic of unevenness of distribution of and access to (im)mobilities, as well as the (re)organization of the "social goods" around different nodes of interconnections, which puts a critical mirror on mobility justice. There are basically six papers in this special collection with interesting perspectives and different shades of analyses that engage current mobility debates and masticate the theoretical, methodological, and empirical contexts of the discourses. Exploring teachers' identities while teaching in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is essential. Such assists teachers to reflect, improving their teaching through various networks. Identities are conscious thoughts interrogating subconscious thoughts that drive teachers to understand their personal needs. Eleven teachers, registered for a Master of Education degree at a university in South Africa, were purposively selected for this study. The objective of this study was to understand teachers' identities while teaching mathematics in the 4IR. Focus-group discussions, reflective activities, and one-on-one semi-structured interviews, framed by a pragmatic case study, were used for data collection. The teachers' identities revealed that the Three Tree Rings Theory with Currere was useful when applied as the teaching framework. Such application of the theories generated three categories of teaching identities within the 4IR. Categories were societal, professional, and personal identities. The university at which these participants were registered prescribed Moodle. However, the students mostly used social media sites such as Facebook and WhatsApp. As a result, students used digital technologies even during face-to-face classes. The study concluded that, although there were elements of both personal and professional identities, the societal identity was that which drove teaching. Consequently, this study recommends that teachers should learn to reflect on, in, and for their actions, in order to address the 'what', 'how', 'who', and 'why' questions of education, natural identity, and the 4IR/5IR. In today's diverse and mobile world, it is common for people to engage in different roles, which make their self-concept more complex and layered, hence enriching their cognitive and behavioural repertoires. Given the importance of the self-concept, it is worthwhile to further understand the process and condition of the self on psychological functioning. The present research aims to investigate the effect of multiple identities on life satisfaction and identify the mechanism underlying this linkage and its boundary condition. We hypothesised a moderated mediation model with multiple identities predicting life satisfaction through identity integration, and the development of a cohesive self-concept depends largely on people's holistic thinking, a cognitive tendency to attend to the linkages among objects and orient towards the context or field as a whole, instead of focusing on the unique properties of discrete objects. Results converged from Study 1 (N = 383) and Study 2 (N = 210) to support the mediating effect of identity integration on the association between multiple identities and life satisfaction. Moreover, we found in Study 2 that the relation between multiple identities and life satisfaction was significant when holistic thinking was high or moderate, but not when holistic thinking was low. In sum, the present research provided empirical evidence that identity integration represents the key mechanism, whereas holistic thinking represents the key condition in determining how multiple identities can be associated with life satisfaction. In this paper, we obtain axiom systems, bases of identities and quasi-identities for classes of algebras of binary relations with a conjunctive operation, i.e., an operation that can be defined by a logical formula containing only conjunctions. The result of applying such an operation to two binary relations is the Cartesian product of their reflexive projections. Background: African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) is an underutilized crop that has the potential to contribute to sustainable food security. In October 2021, more than 90% African Yam Bean (AYB) plants showed typical virus symptoms of mosaic and necrosis in the grain legumes field of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Nigeria. Methods and results: Subsequently, leaf samples were collected and tested by ELISA and PCR to identify the virus species. Anti-BCMV and anti-potyvirus antibodies both gave positive results when symptomatic leaves were tested, and PCR using primers designed to the coat protein gene of BCMV amplified a band of the expected size (469 bp). The sequence of the PCR product was deposited in GenBank with the accession No. OL763314. The nucleotide sequence of the coat protein gene had 99% identity with BCMV isolate TN2 (KY044818). The identities of the nucleotide and amino acid sequence of the partial CP gene of the isolated virus relative to those of other potyviruses were 82.96–99.12% and 87.33–100%,, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses of the partial CP-nucleotide sequences grouped the isolate from this study (BCMV-IART-AYB) and BCMV-TN2 in the same cluster with other BCMV strains of the peanut stripe (PSt) and the blackeye cowpea (BlC) strains. Conclusions: In this study, we identified Bean commom mosaic virus (BCMV) infecting AYB for the first time in Nigeria and show that it has high nucleotide and amino acid identity with an Isolate of cowpea-infecting BCMV in India and China respectively than isolate in Nigeria. The subject of this paper is the study of some properties of -Stirling numbers of the second kind for a complex or a -adic complex number. In the -adic setting, as we known, the Laplace transform plays an important role in the study of some arithmetic sequences. We remind the definition of the Laplace transform of a -adic measure and its link with the moment of this measure. With the aid of a specific measure we establish some identities and congruences for the -Stirling numbers when is a non zero -adic complex number and for the generalized -Stirling numbers of the second kind attached to a -adic function that is invariant by . Understanding how individuals learn at work throughout their lives is significant for discussions of lifelong learning in the current era where changes can be unpredictable and frequent, as illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite a corpus of literature on the subject of "learning", there is little research or theoretical understanding of "change over time" as a dimension of individual learning at work. Increasing emphasis has been put on individuals' personal development, since they play key mediating roles in organisations' work practices. This article proposes the concept of the "learning journey" to explore the relational complexity of how individuals learn at different workplace settings across their working lives. In order to illuminate this, the article draws on the learning experiences of two workers with different roles at two points in time across different workplaces. The author argues that individual learning involves a complex interaction of individual positions, identities and agency towards learning. This complexity is relational and interrelated with the workplace learning culture, which is why learning is different for individuals in different workplaces and even for the same person in the same workplace when occupying different roles. The global crisis instantiated by the COVID-19 pandemic opens a unique governance window to transform the sustainability, resilience, and ethics of the global seafood industry. Simultaneously crippling public health, civil liberties, and national economies, the global pandemic has exposed the diverse values and identities of actors upon which global food systems pivot, as well as their interconnectivity with other economic sectors and spheres of human activity. In the wake of COVID-19, ethics offers a timely conceptual reframing and methodological approach to navigate these diverse values and identities and to reconcile their ensuing policy trade-offs and conflicts. Values and identities denote complex concepts and realities, characterized by plurality, fluidity and dynamics, ambiguity, and implicitness, which often hamper responsive policy-setting and effective governance. Rather than adopt a static characterization of specific value or identity types, I introduce a novel hierarchical conceptualization of values and identities made salient by scale and context. I illustrate how salient values and identities emerge at multiple scales through three seafood COVID-19 contextual examples in India, Canada, and New Zealand, where diverse seafood actors interact within local, domestic (regional/national), and global seafood value chains, respectively. These examples highlight the differential values and identities, and hence differential vulnerabilities, resilience, and impacts on seafood actors with the COVID-19 pandemic, which necessitate differentiated policy interventions if they are to be responsive to those affected. An ethical governance framework that integrates diverse marine values and identities, buttressed by concrete deliberation and decision-support protocols and tools, can transform the modus operandi of global seafood systems toward both sustainable and ethical development. This essay investigates the importance of death in Chanson de Roland for the purposes of enacting and changing borders of cultural identity. It argues that Roland responds to contemporary concerns over Christian superiority vis-à-vis the Islamic world. The representation of communities in Roland is dynamic and changing over the course of the poem: Christian and Saracen communities are initially behaviourally different but with superficial qualities of resemblance that threaten to efface the perceived moral and chivalric superiority of Christendom. Roland's slaying of a specific group of Saracen knights effects a potent clarification and reformulation of communal boundaries between Christians and Saracens, removing any ambiguity or illusion of moral parity between the two camps. Meanwhile, his own death allows for a consolidation of a uniform Frankish Christian identity and a transformation in social and political structures. On the basis of these results, A.I. Mal'tsev introduced into consideration Raphael Robinson algebra of all unary primitive recursive functions and two of Julia Robinson's algebras: namely, the partial algebra of all unary general recursive functions and the algebra of all unary partial recursive functions, and proposed to study the properties of these algebras, including the existence of finite bases of identities in these algebras. We propose a simple model of value formation in two societies (communities). When forming values, individuals face conformity pressure within their own society and they are intolerant toward the other society. When such a value formation process is noisy, the interaction between conformity, intolerance and noise can give rise to interesting dynamic outcomes including two polarized societies and polarization across the two societies. We describe a new connection between the dilogarithm function and the solutions of Pell's equation x 2 - n y 2 = ± 1 . For each solution x, y to Pell's equation, we obtain a dilogarithm identity whose terms are given by the continued fraction expansion of the associated unit x + y n ∈ Z [ n ] . Several new q-supercongruences are obtained using transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, together with various techniques such as suitably combining terms, and creative microscoping, a method recently developed by the first author in collaboration with Zudilin. More concretely, the results in this paper include q-analogues of supercongruences (referring to p-adic identities remaining valid for some higher power of p) established by Long, by Long and Ramakrishna, and several other q-supercongruences. The six basic hypergeometric transformation formulas which are made use of are Watson's transformation, a quadratic transformation of Rahman, a cubic transformation of Gasper and Rahman, a quartic transformation of Gasper and Rahman, a double series transformation of Ismail, Rahman and Suslov, and a new transformation formula for a nonterminating very-well-poised 12 ϕ 11 series. Also, the nonterminating q-Dixon summation formula is used. A special case of the new 12 ϕ 11 transformation formula is further utilized to obtain a generalization of Rogers' linearization formula for the continuous q-ultraspherical polynomials. This paper presents an ethnographic study of autobiographical narratives about Jewish life during the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco (1912–1956). Based on eighteen interviews conducted between 2013 and 2016, this work examines the peculiar process Sephardic Jews underwent as a consequence of the Spanish colonial presence in the north of Morocco. Spanish-Moroccan Jews developed their identity affiliations and allegiances under the influence of different institutions: the Spanish colonial agencies, the Alliance Israélite Universelle, the Jewish Agency, the Jewish community and the Moroccan authorities. These institutions presented different and often contradictory roles for Moroccan Jews. This work shows the tensions and conflicts experienced by the participants when navigating these different cultural and political spheres. The paper examines the participants' narratives about the ambiguous "re-Hispanicization" of Sephardic Jews during the colonial period. It studies the participants' memories about their identification with Spain and the adoption of Spanish habits and customs during the Protectorate period, which transformed Jewish life and redefined the limits between the different ethno-religious groups. This paper shows the impact of the social, historical and political conditions of the Protectorate on the participants' memories about colonial Morocco. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Immigrant teachers have been more visible than ever before owing to transnational mobility. However, there is a lack of research on exploring their lived experiences in a broader context. With an auto-ethnographic approach, this study delves into the life of a non-native migrant in New Zealand over a period of 6 years. The qualitative data were mainly drawn from his reflective journals written between 2009 and 2016. Using grounded theory analysis, a genuine narrative of the 'self' reveals that the experience of living overseas has constantly shaped his expectations on personal, social and professional levels. Drawing on students' language repertoires for conjecture, we here focus on communication acts to consider students' mathematical identities in action. Our attention to authority and positioning in mathematics classrooms led us to interrogate the intertwined nature of discourses and how they may make identities available. We use an interaction among a group of grade ten students in a problem-solving situation to illustrate and develop our conceptualization of identities in contexts of intertwining discourses. We consider how the participants position themselves in relation to each other, to mathematics, and to other available discourses, and we ask how their communication acts might serve their purposes within the discourses. We discuss the implications of intertwined discourses for students' developing identities when communicating in a mathematical context. We argue that one cannot understand students' mathematical identities without understanding that their communication acts are also part of their repertoires for a range of discourses. In a recent work by Andrews, Dixit, and Yee the partition functions p ω (n) and p ν (n) were introduced in connection with the third order mock theta functions ω (q) and ν (q) , respectively. The function p ω (n) counts the number of partitions of n in which each odd part is less than twice the smallest part, and p ν (n) counts the number of partitions of n under the same conditions as p ω (n) and having all parts distinct. In this paper, we consider restrictions of these functions, namely p ω (n , k) and p ν (n , k) , where k is the number of parts. Sustained academic growth of the Mexican population in the public schools of the Rio Grande Valley of Texas has precipitated a need for new and innovative ways to effectively educate English-language learners (ELLs). In place of common external factors typically used such as attendance, socioeconomic status, and test scores to address ELL's learning, this study uses the lived educational descriptions of ELL teachers, who were once ELL students, to mine for new instructional insights to promote ELL student learning. To that effect, discourse analysis was utilized to ascertain the identity(s) of ELL educators, who were once ELL students. The convergence of the N-Identity and I-Identity leads to a third, albeit just as important D-Identity that provides much needed insight for school directors, curriculum facilitators, administrators, and educators who teach ELL students every day. In this paper we define a q-extension of Fubini numbers which we call q-Fubini numbers, and generalized q-Fubini numbers of order r. Using the p-adic Laplace transform and p-adic integration, we obtain these numbers as moments of appropriate p-adicmeasures. Then we establish some identities and congruences for these numbers. We establish also a relationship between generalized q-Fubini numbers of order r and q-Fubini numbers. Further, as done in previous works we introduce a concept of generalized q-Fubini numbers, attached to a continuous pℓℤp-invariant function ψ defined on ℤp. This study explores the relationship between dietary patterns and social structure in a pre-industrial mining community in Salberget, Sweden c. 1470 to 1600 A.D. using a combination of different research approaches and tools, including archaeology, osteology, bone chemistry and history. The correlation between demographic criteria (sex and age) and archaeological variables (burial type and burial location) shows that Salberget was a highly stratified community. Group diets were investigated through analyses of stable isotopes (carbon, δ13C, and nitrogen, δ15N) of bone collagen from a sub-sample of individuals buried at the site (n = 67), interpreted alongside data from human dental lesions and deficiencies, animal bone waste and information on eating habits extracted from the extensive historical documents regarding mining activities at Salberget. These integrated analyses provide a clear association between social status and diet and confirm that social status, and to a lesser extent sex, gender and age, likely governed food choice and opportunity in this diverse community. Grouping techniques employ similarities within data to create new entities, which lend themselves to the interpretation process. This article presents three different grouping approaches, each originally developed independently, and applied to a common dataset of archaeological finds. The aim is not to search for the right approach or results, in a competing way, but rather to present the methods as complementary. It is also our intention to stress that a tight connection between theory and statistical modelling is indispensable. Indeed, the use of a particular methodology must be supported by an adapted theory; similarly, a theory without a proper methodological realisation will often not have any actual utility. The integration of theory and method is exemplified in the three case methods. The first method uses metal objects as cultural indicators. The study area is divided into a set of identical geographical units, characterized according to the type and proportions of indicators and grouped using hierarchical clustering. The second approach deals with cultures as standardisations between individuals, using ‘Typenspektrum’ as significant data for identifying different cultures. Groups are defined through kernel density estimation and a cluster analysis, followed by internal and external validation techniques. A third method characterizes the funerary ritual and grave-goods, using a similarity algorithm coupled with clustering procedures to compare the graves with one another. The outcome is validated with exploratory methods and compared to patterns from different contexts. Names, as proper nouns, are clearly important for the identification of individuals in everyday life. In the present article, I argue that forenames and surnames need also to be recognized as 'doing' words, important in the categorization of sex at birth and in the ongoing management of gender conduct appropriate to sex category. Using evidence on personal naming practices in the United States and United Kingdom, I examine what happens at crisis points of sexed and gendered naming in the life course (for example, at the birth of babies, at marriage, and during gender-identity transitions). I show how forenames and surnames help in the embodied doing of gender and, likewise, that bodies are key to gendered practices of forenaming and surnaming: we have 'gendered embodied named identities.' Whether normative and compliant, pragmatic, or creative and resistant, forenaming and surnaming practices are revealed as core to the production and reproduction of binary sex categories and to gendered identities, difference, hierarchies, and inequalities. Over the past fifty years, children's picture books have made great strides toward literary equity by including more perspectives from and stories about marginalized groups, such as those whose gender identities do not conform to heteronormative standards. While texts featuring gender-variant male characters engage in topics that are far too often shoved into the proverbial closet, what is yet to be determined is the degree to which they adequately reflect the complexity of (gender) identity and to what extent such picture books can counter narratives related to traditional 'masculinity.' The purpose of this paper is to critically examine picture book representations of gender variance, as exhibited by male characters, in order to determine the books' potential for exploring issues of social justice with elementary-age students. This study utilizes a critical multiculturalist lens to challenge the ways in which gender variance is represented in children's literature and the reasons that young gender-variant male protagonists achieve-or do not achieve-communal acceptance. Collecting information on sexual identity is critical to ensuring the visibility of minority populations who face stigmatization and discrimination related to sexual identities. However, it is challenging to capture the nuances of sexual identity with traditional survey research methods. Using a mixed-methods approach, we gathered data on the sexual identities of 80 behaviorally bisexual women in the Midwestern United States through an online survey. When provided different types of measures (e.g., open ended and fixed response) and different contexts in which to identify (e.g., private and public), participants varied in how they reported their sexual identities. Qualitative analysis of participant narratives around identity change finds partitioning and ranking of attraction is a key component in understanding behaviorally bisexual women's identities. We further identify a division regarding the desired outcomes of identity development processes. Given the multiple ways in which participants identified depending upon the type of measure and the context specified, and the variation in identification over time, results support reconsidering the capability of typical measures and methods used in survey research to capture sexual identity information. In this article I explore the ways in which legal language, discourses, and narratives construct new dominant identities for women who kill their children. These identities are those of the 'bad', 'mad', or 'sad' woman. Drawing upon and critiquing statutes, case law, and sentencing remarks from England and Wales, I explore how singular narrative identities emerge for the female defendants concerned. Using examples from selected cases, I highlight how the judiciary interpret legislation, use evidence, and draw upon gender stereotypes in carefully constructing macro-narratives which produce gendered identities for filicidal women, thus nullifying the challenge these women pose to appropriate femininity and the motherhood mandate. Each of the narrative identities discussed deny the agency of the female defendants that they are attached to, albeit in subtly different ways, by denying their ability to make any degree of choice in relation to their filicidal actions. Although such identity construction and agency denial may not always be damaging to these filicidal women per se, its pervasiveness within legal discourse reinforces and reproduces damaging gender stereotypes surrounding women and femininity. Perhaps nowhere in European prehistory does the idea of clearly-defined cultural boundaries remain more current than in the initial Neolithic, where the southeast-northwest trend of the spread of farming crosses what is perceived as a sharp divide between the Balkans and central Europe. This corresponds to a distinction between the Vinča culture package, named for a classic site in Serbia, with its characteristic pottery assemblage and absence of longhouses, and the Linearbandkeramik (LBK), with equally diagnostic but different pottery, and its apparently culturally-diagnostic longhouses, extending in a more northerly belt through central Europe westward to the Dutch coast. In this paper we question the concept of such a clear division through a presentation of new data from the site of Szederkény-Kukorica-dűlő. A large settlement in southeast Transdanubia, Hungary, excavated in advance of road construction, Szederkény is notable for its combination of pottery styles, variously including Vinča A, Ražište and LBK, and longhouses of a kind otherwise familiar from the LBK world. Formal modelling of its date establishes that the site probably began in the later 54th century cal BC, lasting until the first decades of the 52nd century cal BC. Occupation, featuring longhouses, pits and graves, probably began at the same time in the eastern and western parts of the settlement, starting a decade or two later in the central part; the western part was probably the last to be abandoned. Vinča pottery is predominantly associated with the eastern and central parts of the site, and Ražište pottery with the west. Formal modelling of the early history of longhouses in the LBK world suggests their emergence in the Formative LBK of Transdanubia c. 5500 cal BC followed by rapid dispersal in the middle of the 54th century cal BC, associated with the 'earliest' ( älteste) LBK. The adoption of longhouses at Szederkény thus appears to come a few generations after the start of this 'diaspora'. Rather than explaining the mixture of things, practices and perhaps people at Szederkény with reference to problematic notions such as hybridity, we propose instead a more fluid and varied vocabulary, encompassing combination and amalgamation, relationships and performance in the flow of social life, and networks; this makes greater allowance for diversity and interleaving in a context of rapid change. Previous social and behavioral research on identity among bisexual men, when not subsumed within the category of men who have sex with men (MSM), has primarily focused on samples of self-identified bisexual men. Little is known about sexual self-identification among men who are behaviorally bisexual, regardless of sexual identity. Using qualitative data from 77 in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of behaviorally bisexual men (i.e., men who have had sex with at least one woman and at least one man in the past six months) from a large city in the Midwestern United States, we analyzed responses from a domain focusing on sexual self-identity and related issues. Overall, participants' sexual self-identification was exceptionally diverse. Three primary themes emerged: (1) a resistance to, or rejection of, using sexual self-identity labels; (2) concurrent use of multiple identity categories and the strategic deployment of multiple sexual identity labels; and (3) a variety of trajectories to current sexual self-identification. Based on our findings, we offer insights into the unique lived experiences of behaviorally bisexual men, as well as broader considerations for the study of men's sexuality. We also explore identity-related information useful for the design of HIV/STI prevention and other sexual health programs directed toward behaviorally bisexual men, which will ideally be variable and flexible in accordance with the wide range of diversity found in this population. Children's motivations to engage in everyday activities draw on their experiences in thinking of oneself and the activities. In theory, these personal and social realities provide the complex foundations of self-concepts. The aim of this project was to define the foundations of children's self-concepts about everyday activities; to focus on everyday activities of literacy and numeracy. Participants were 8- to 12-year-old girls and boys, in a pilot study ( N = 16), correlational models of identities ( N = 297) and comparative contexts ( N = 42), and experimental evidence ( N = 82). The pilot study validated materials, and Study 1 confirmed a perceptual base for self-concepts. Results of Study 2 highlighted a range of comparative contexts, and Study 3 confirmed personal and social bases of children's self-concepts. In this situation, foundations of self-concepts cover identities (as a sense of individuality and belonging) and self-categorizations, in thinking about stability of skills and abilities over time, and in relation to children the same age. These ideas are readily applied to identities and arrays of self-categorizations in other situations. In conclusion, a personal and social theory of self-concepts extends contemporary Motivational Spiral Models that relate self-concepts to task strategies, skills, feelings and participation. The paper presents results from a longitudinal study of students' decisions to enrol on a higher education science programme and their experiences of it. The aim is to give insights into students' transition process and negotiation of identity. This is done by following a cohort of 38 students in a series of qualitative interviews during a 3-year period starting as they were about to finish upper secondary school. We find that the students' choice of study is an ongoing process of meaning-making, which continues when the students enter higher education and continuously work on their identities to gain a sense of belonging to their science or engineering programme. The use of a narrative methodology provides understanding of choice of study as involving changes in future perspectives and in the interpretation of past experiences. Further, we gain access into how this meaning-making process over time reflects the students' negotiations in terms of belonging to higher education and their coping strategies when their expectations of their new programme interact with their first-year experiences. Tamura proved that for any semigroup word U( x, y), if every group satisfying an identity of the form yx ~ xU( x, y) y is abelian, then so is every semigroup that satisfies that identity. Because a group has an identity element and the cancellation property, it is easier to show that a group is abelian than that a semigroup is. If we know that it is, then there must be a sequence of substitutions using xU( x, y) y ~ yx that transforms xy to yx. We examine such sequences and propose finding them as a challenge to proof by computer. Also, every model of y ~ xU( x, y) x is a group. This raises a similar challenge, which we explore in the special case y ~ x y x. In addition, we determine the free model with two generators of some of these identities. In particular, we find that the free model for y ~ x yx has order 32 and is the product of D (the symmetries of a square), C, and C, and point out relations between such identities and Burnside's Problem concerning models of x ~ y.
