This paper introduces the double-pass imaging background-oriented schlieren (DPBOS) technique to overcome a defocusing problem of conventional background-oriented schlieren (BOS) systems. In the conventional BOS system, a camera focuses on a background situated behind a measurement target, which inevitably causes a blurred image of the target. The advantage of the proposed technique, using a digital projector with proper optical alignment, is that the camera focuses on both the target and the background image at the same time. Therefore, measurement in the vicinity of the target can be achieved with higher sensitivity than that of the conventional BOS system. For validation, a test target (lens) and the density field near a heat sink are measured using the DPBOS. The results show good agreement with theoretical prediction and exhibit higher sensitivity than the conventional and telecentric BOS system. In addition, the accuracy of DPBOS was assessed by comparing the calculated surface temperatures from the displacement of DPBOS and conventional BOS with the corresponding theoretical temperature. As the results, the DPBOS and conventional BOS have errors of 3% and 9%, respectively. Several experimental and animal studies have demonstrated that substances rich in antioxidants can reduce the physicochemical and peroxidative risk factors for calcium oxalate (CaOx) renal stone formation in urine and blood. However, there are very few such investigations in humans. In the present pilot study, two varieties of tea, a green one from Japan (JGT) and a herbal one from South Africa (Rooibos) (RT), both rich in antioxidants, were administered to a group of CaOx stone formers (SF) ( n = 8) for 30 days. Both teas were analysed for polyphenols by high-performance liquid chromatography and for minerals by plasma atomic and optical emission spectroscopy. 24 h urines (baseline and day 30) were analysed for lithogenic factors. CaOx metastable limits and crystal nucleation and growth kinetics were also determined in each urine sample. Deposited crystals were inspected by scanning electron microscopy. Blood samples were collected (baseline and day 30). Biomarkers of oxidative stress including plasma and urinary thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and urinary N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) were also determined. Urinary physicochemical risk factors were also investigated after ingestion of RT for 30 days in two control groups (CG1 and CG2), the latter one of which consisted of habitual JGT drinkers. Statistical analyses were performed using Wilcoxon signed rank tests and Mann-Whitney tests for paired and independent measurements, respectively. Several flavonoids and catechins were quantified in RT and JGT, respectively, confirming that both teas are rich sources of antioxidants. Mineral content was found to be far below dietary reference intakes. There were no significant changes in any of the urinary physicochemical or peroxidative risk factors in the control groups or in SF, except for the supersaturation (SS) of brushite (Bru) which decreased in the latter group after ingestion of JGT. Crystal morphology showed a tendency to change from mixed CaOx mono- and di-hydrate to monohydrate after ingestion of each tea. Since the latter form has a stronger binding affinity for epithelial cells, this effect is not protective. Analysis of the physicochemical and peroxidative risk factors in CG1 and CG2 did not reveal any evidence of a synergistic effect between the two teas. Paradoxically, baseline risk factors in the habitual JGT control group were significantly raised relative to those in CG1. Our preliminary results suggest that ingestion of RT and JGT does not reduce the risk factors for CaOx stone formation in humans, but these findings need to be tested in further studies involving much larger sample sizes. Purpose: Many epidemiological studies on unruptured cerebral aneurysms have reported that the larger the aneurysm, the higher the risk of rupture. However, many ruptured aneurysms are not large. Electrocardiography (ECG)-gated 3D-computed tomography angiography (4D-CTA) was used to detect pulsation in unruptured cerebral aneurysms. The differences in the clinical course of patients in whom pulsation was or was not detected were then evaluated. Methods: Forty-two patients with 62 unruptured cystiform cerebral aneurysms who underwent 4D-CTA and follow-up 3D-CTA more than 120 days later were studied. The tube voltage, tube current, and rotation speed were 120 kV, 270 mA, and 0.35 s/rot., respectively. ECG-gated reconstruction was performed, with the cardiac cycle divided into 20 phases. Patients with heart rates higher than 80 bpm were excluded, so 37 patients with 56 aneurysms were analyzed. Results: Pulsation was detected in 20 of the 56 unruptured aneurysms. Of these 20 aneurysms, 6 showed a change in shape at the time of follow-up. Of the 36 aneurysms in which pulsation was not detected, 2 showed a change in shape at follow-up. There was no significant difference in the follow-up interval between the two groups. The aneurysms in which pulsation was detected were significantly more likely to show a change in shape ( P = 0.04), with a higher odds ratio of 7.286. Conclusion: Unruptured aneurysms in which pulsation was detected by 4D-CTA were more likely to show a change in shape at follow-up, suggesting that 4D-CTA may be useful for identifying aneurysms with a higher risk of rupture. Positron emission tomography (PET) is used for staging and response evaluation in primary gastric lymphoma (PGL). However, the implications of [(18)F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) uptake in PGL at first diagnosis have not been reported. The relationship between (18)F-FDG uptake and the expression of facilitative glucose transporters (GLUTs), hexokinase II (HK II), and Ki67, as well as malignant potential in PGL, was assessed in this study. We analyzed 23 patients with PGL [nine with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL); seven with high-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma; and seven with low-grade MALT lymphoma]. The expression levels of GLUT1, GLUT3, HK II, and Ki67 were evaluated according to the percentage of positive area determined by immunohistochemistry. Standardized uptake values correlated significantly with pathological malignant potentials (low-grade/high-grade MALT lymphoma and DLBCL: p = 0.001-0.002), Ki67 (p < 0.001), and GLUT1 expression (p = 0.02). Objectives: To investigate the diagnostic performance of postmortem multidetector computed tomography (PMMDCT) for the detection of fatal findings related to causes of non-traumatic death in the emergency department (ED).Methods: 494 consecutive cases of clinically diagnosed non-traumatic death in ED involving PMMDCT were enrolled. The fatal findings were detected on PMMDCT and classified as definite or possible findings. These findings were confirmed by autopsy in 20 cases.Results: The fatal findings were detected in 188 subjects (38.1%) including 122 with definite (24.7%) and 66 with possible finding (13.4%). Definite findings included 21 cases of intracranial vascular lesions, 84 with intra-thoracic haemorrhage, 13 with retroperitoneal haemorrhage and one with oesophagogastric haemorrhage. In three patients who had initially been diagnosed with non-traumatic death, PMMDCT revealed fatal traumatic findings. Two definite findings (two haemopericardiums) and seven possible findings (two intestinal obstructions, one each of multiple liver tumours central pulmonary artery dilatation, pulmonary congestion, peritoneal haematoma, and brain oedema) were confirmed by autopsy. The causes of death were not determined in cases with possible findings without autopsy.Conclusions: PMMDCT is a feasible tool for detecting morphological fatal findings in non-traumatic death in ED. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a worksheet for diagnosing postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) in emergency departments (EDs).Materials and Methods: A total of 49 cases of clinically diagnosed nontraumatic deaths in the ED who underwent total body PMCT were enrolled. PMCT images were prospectively evaluated by four radiologists: two radiologists with 1.5 and 3.5 years of residency and two board-certified radiologists with >20 years of experience. Readers were independently instructed to detect and interpret findings with reference to fatal findings, postmortem features, changes caused by cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and other pathological findings according to a worksheet that was composed of the possible findings previously reported. Agreement on detection and interpretation of findings between each reader was measured using Cohen's kappa coefficients.Results: For the detection of findings, there was substantial agreement among the four readers (kappa > 0.60, P < 0.0001). There was substantial (kappa > 0.60, P < 0.0001) and near-substantial (kappa = 0.60, P < 0.0001) agreement in the interpretation of the finding.Conclusion: Results of our study suggest equivalency on diagnosing PMCT regardless of the reader's level of experience. A 40-year-old woman discovered through palpation a tumor in the upper lateral quadrant of the left mammary gland. Mammography, ultrasonography (US), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 10 mm diameter tumor. Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ((18)F-FDG-PET) showed abnormal accumulation in the detected tumor, and the maximum standardized uptake value was 2.2. The patient underwent tumor resection. The postoperative histopathological finding was intraductal papilloma. The intraductal papilloma showed strong expression of glucose transporter (GLUT)-4 on membrane and/or cytoplasm, and weak expression of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 by immunohistochemistry. This case suggests that other glucose transporters (e.g., GLUT-4), other pathological factors, and cytokines may have a close relation with (18)F-FDG accumulation in intraductal papilloma more than GLUT-1 or GLUT-3 expression. Objective: To preliminarily evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of MR elastography of the liver at 3 T with cine-tagging and bending energy (BE) analysis for the evaluation of hepatic fibrosis.Materials and Methods: Twenty-two patients underwent MR elastography with four different cine-tagging grids on the liver (16- or 20-mm sagittal or coronal). Nine images serially obtained during 1-s of exhalation were analyzed to define coordinates of grid intersections. BE values were calculated using the thin-plate spline method. BE values were compared among patient groups with different fibrosis stage thresholds.Results: In the 22 patients, six had a fibrosis score of F0, one had F1, seven had F2, three had F3, and five had F4. Mean BE value with 16-mm sagittal grid was greater with fibrosis score F0 (1.54 ± 0.63) than with ≥F1 (0.97 ± 0.12, P = 0.013) as well as with ≤F1 (1.48 ± 0.60) than with ≥F2 (0.96 ± 0.36, P = 0.019).Conclusion: Our results showed that MR elastography with 16-mm sagittal grid and BE analysis had a potential in discrimination for the patients with moderate or advanced hepatic fibrosis from those with healthy liver or slight fibrosis. We describe the magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings in a 20-year-old woman with a fibroepithelial polyp of the vulva. Within the lesion, abundant fibrous tissue was visualized as stratiform hypointense areas on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. At the center of the attachment site, clustered fatty tissue was revealed as linear hyperintense areas on T1-weighted MRI. A mild degree of edematous stroma including less fibrosis and cellularity was demonstrated as hyperintense areas on T2-weighted MRI and hypointense areas on T1-weighted MRI. Although the MRI findings of fibroepithelial polyps of the vulva are often similar to those of aggressive angiomyxoma, angiomyofibroblastoma, and cellular angiofibroma, a fibroepithelial polyp should be considered when radiological images demonstrate the following features: stratiform hypointense areas surrounded by patchy hyperintense areas on T2-weighted MRI and hyperintense areas on T1-weighted MRI. Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the results of semiquantitative analysis by(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with plasma osteopontin levels in the same asbestos-related pleural disease population.Materials and Methods: A total of 17 patients with asbestos-related pleural disease were prospectively recruited. They underwent PET/CT, and plasma osteopontin levels were measured. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) was determined from the most active pleural lesion in each patient.Results: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) was histologically proven in 6 patients, and 11 patients had proven benign asbestos-related pleural diseases (7 pleural plaques, 4 asbestos pleurisy). Significant differences in SUVmax were found between patients with MPM and those with asbestos pleurisy (P = 0.031) and between patients with MPM and those with pleural plaques (P = 0.012). A significant difference was found in the plasma osteopontin levels between patients with asbestos pleurisy and patients with pleural plaques (Bonferroni correction, P = 0.024). The SUVmax in patients with benign asbestos-related diseases was statistically positively correlated with plasma osteopontin in the same group (Spearman's r = 0.75, P < 0.05).Conclusion: PET/CT might be more helpful than plasma osteopontin for distinguishing benign asbestos-related pleural diseases from MPM, and the SUVmax in benign asbestos-related pleural diseases may reflect changes in pleural inflammation. Purpose: The aim of this study was quantitatively to analyze brain edema and swelling due to early postmortem changes using computed tomography (CT) scans of the head.Materials and Methods: Review board approval was obtained, and informed consent was waived. A total of 41 patients who underwent head CT before and shortly after death were enrolled. Hounsfield units (HUs) of gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) were measured at the levels of the basal ganglia, centrum semiovale, and high convexity area on both antemortem and postmortem CT. The length of the minor axis of the third ventricle at the level of the basal ganglia and the width of the central sulcus at the level of high convexity were measured.Results: At each level tested, the HUs of GM and the GM/WM ratios on postmortem CT were significantly lower than those on antemortem CT (P < 0.001). HUs of WM on postmortem CT were slightly higher than those on antemortem CT but without significant difference (P > 0.1). Postmortem CT showed subtle loss of distinction between GM and WM. The size of the third ventricle and the width of the central sulcus did not vary before and after death (P > 0.1).Conclusion: Early postmortem CT shows mild brain edema but does not show brain swelling. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cause and significance of intrahepatic gas (IHG).Materials and Methods: There were 208 nontraumatically deceased individuals retrospectively investigated concerning the occurrence and location of IHG by postmortem multislice computed tomography (MSCT) imaging. The location of IHG was graded on a scale from 0 to 3: 0, no gas; 1, gas only in the left lobe; 2, gas in the left lobe and anterior segment of the right lobe; 3, gas in the left lobe and the anterior and posterior segments of the right lobe). We also assessed and noted the occurrence of intestinal distention, airway management, the interval between cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) and subsequent examination, and the postmortem interval.Results: IHG was found in 66 cases (31.7%): grade 1, 15 (7.2%); grade 2, 21 (10.1%); grade 3, 30 (14.4%). The presence of IHG was strongly related to intestinal distention and the period between the time of CPA and the examination.Conclusion: IHG is a frequent finding on postmortem CT in cases of nontraumatic death. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of diffusion-weighted imaging in predicting the responses to neoadjuvant therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. Diffusion-weighted, T2-weighted, and gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images were obtained from 28 patients with untreated head and neck squamous cell carcinomas with histological proof. A blinded radiologist evaluated the quantitative and qualitative signal intensities and apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) in the lesions on each sequence. All patients were treated by neoadjuvant therapies, and the post-therapeutic tumor regression rate was determined. Both the quantitative and qualitative signal intensities on diffusion-weighted images showed positive correlations (r = 0.367 and 0.412, p < .05), and the ADCs showed a weak, inversed correlation (r = -0.384, p < .05) with the tumor regression rates. Diffusion-weighted imaging including an assessment by ADCs may be able to predict tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy for head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous indium and zinc oxides (IZO) doped with various concentration of Fe were prepared by a sol–gel method. 1% Fe doping indicated the ferromagnetic behavior and showed the magnetic relaxation peaks in addition to a paramagnetic doublet. The films on glass plate were deposited by pulsed laser ablation under 10 − 6 Torr, using IZO powder with 5% Fe. After annealing at 400˚C in air, the amorphous films showed Kerr effect. It was found from DCEMS measurement that metallic Fe and paramagnetic Fe3 + were produced from the paramagnetic Fe2 + , whereas the film consisted of only two paramagnetic Fe3 + and Fe2 + before annealing. Rutile-type Co x Ti1 − x O2 − d laser deposited on alumina substrate was studied after 57Co doping, using emission Mössbauer spectroscopy. It was found that although under certain conditions (i.e., which result in high conductivity) the thin rutile layers showed magnetooptical effect, the Mössbauer probe did not reveal any magnetic splitting, but showed paramagnetic Co3 + (Fe3 + ) in the films of low electric resistance. This supports that these samples have carrier induced magnetism which is also connected to the defect structure of the rutile films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6% 57Fe doped titanium oxide films, prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on sapphire substrate at 650°C under various vacuum conditions, were characterized mainly by conversion electron Mössbauer spectrometry (CEMS). Two magnetic sextets with hyperfine fields 33 and 29 T, and one doublet were observed in the CEMS spectra of TiO2 films prepared under PO2 = 10−6 and 10−8 torr, which showed ferromagnetism at room temperature, whereas only the doublet of paramagnetic Fe3+ species was observed for the film prepared under PO2 = 10−1 torr. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) induces complete remission in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). However, ATRA sometimes causes retinoic acid syndrome (RAS) characterized by respiratory distress, pleural effusions, fever and weight gain. To investigate the pathophysiology of RAS, we generated an animal model by injecting an APL cell line, NB4, into immunodeficient mice. When NOD/scid mice were injected intravenously with fully differentiated NB4 cells (1 × 107) and then given a daily administration of ATRA, three of 12 mice died of pulmonary edema within 14 days. Pathologically, dilated lung capillary vessels and alveolar effusions were observed. After the injection, NB4 cells were detected in the lung within 2 days and in the pleural effusion later on. The gene expression levels of CXC chemokines (MIP-2 and KC) and ICAM-1 were increased in the lung and heart by the ATRA administration. In immunohistochemical analyses, MIP-2 was clearly detected in alveolar macrophages of the lung in mice with RAS. Dexamethasone treatment prevented the development of RAS and decreased the CXC chemokine mRNA expression in the lung. Cyclosporin A (CsA) is used to prevent rejection in transplantation and to treat autoimmune and hematologic diseases such as aplastic anemia. However, the tumor growth-promoting effect of CsA remains controversial. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who developed acute lymphoblastic leukemia of precursor-T-cell origin after 75 months of treatment with CsA for aplastic anemia. The surface antigen phenotype of his leukemic cells was CD2+, CD3+, CD5+, CD7+, CD4-, CD8-, CD10-, CD20-, CD34-, CD41-, and CD56-. Intraperitoneal injection of ketamine (100 mg/kg body weight) significantly reduces the levels of cholecystokinin (CCK) somatostatin (SRIF), and substance P (SP)-like immunoreactivity in various regions of rat brain. No significant change in thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH)-like immunoreactivity was observed. Neuropeptide systems may be involved in the neuropharmacologic effects of ketamine. Intraperitoneal (ip) injection of ketamine increased the concentration of dynorphin in the cortex of rat brain, while decreased it in the septal area. The affinity of ethylketocyclazocine (EKC) receptor binding was decreased in the cortex, but increased in the septal area after pretreating the rats with ketamine. This suggests that the dynorphin neuronal system is stimulated in the cortex and suppressed in the septal area by ketamine. In other 5 brain areas, ketamine had no effect on neither dynorphin concentration nor EKC receptor binding. As dynorphin was reported to produce seizure and spike discharge in the cortex while suppressed the hippocampal EEG of rat brain, it is likely that the dynorphin neuronal system may play at least a part in ketamine induced electrophysiological changes in the brain. We evaluated the clinicopathophysiological features of three patients with acute autonomic and sensory neuropathy (AASN) who were followed for over 3 years. Signs of an autonomic disturbance including vomiting, anhidrosis, urinary disturbances, orthostatic hypotension and reduced coefficient of variation of the R-R interval on electrocardiography gradually improved about 1 year after onset. However, all three exhibited severe generalized sensory impairment for all modalities with the development of persistent sensory ataxia. No sensory nerve action potentials could be elicited and no somatosensory evoked potentials could be obtained. Sural nerve biopsy revealed severe axonopathy. In two patients, a high-intensity area was observed in the posterior column of the spinal cord on T2*-weighted axial magnetic resonance images. The level of neuron-specific enolase in cerebrospinal fluid was markedly elevated in two patients, indicating spinal nerve root or sensory neuron damage. Motor nerve function was well preserved in all patients. Our findings suggests that the major lesion in patients with AASN, particularly those with a sensory deficit, is present in the dorsal root ganglion neurons, that is there is a ganglioneuronopathy. Bax and Bcl-2 proteins are identified as regulating molecules for programmed cell death. In the central nervous system, programmed cell death or apoptosis is considered to be an important phenomenon that is related to neuron vulnerability to a variety of toxic effects, including ischaemic insult. In this study, localization of Bax and Bcl-2 proteins was investigated in the human central nervous system using autopsy cases without any neurological disorder. Results were compared with findings in the rat. Most neurons in human cerebral cortex, basal ganglia and brain stem were positive for both Bax and Bcl-2 proteins, whereas Purkinje cells in cerebellum and neurons in hippocampal CA1, CA2 and CA3 regions were positive for Bax but negative or weakly positive for Bcl-2. Glial cells examined in all sections were negative for both proteins. Choroid plexus, ependymal cells and arachnoid villi showed positive reactivity for both proteins. A possible relationship between the localization of Bax or Bcl-2 proteins and the cell vulnerability in central nervous system is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patterns of the sex ratio allocation of Gryon japonicum (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae), a solitary egg parasitoid of Riptortus clavatus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Alydidae), were investigated in the laboratory, and the result was checked against the field data on the sex composition of the parasitoid. When five host eggs were presented simultaneously to each of the females of G. japonicum in a laboratory experiment, they had a strong tendency to lay a male egg in second host egg and female eggs in the others. However, when four host eggs were presented to each female more than 3 h after the completion of oviposition on a host egg, most of the females laid male eggs in the third oviposition, i.e. the second host eggs after the experimental interruption of oviposition. These results indicated that there was a mechanism for G. japonicum to produce a male egg in the second host egg in consecutive ovipositions, and that the mechanism was reset by more than 3 h intervals of oviposition. By this mechanism, G. japonicum is thought to produce the precise sex ratio in response to the size of a host egg batch. The discharge vessel (7 L in volume) was equipped with a CO absorber (The CO being formed during the discharge), thus simulating possible absorption of CO in the primitive ocean. The vessel also has a cold trap (∼ −15 °C), which protects the primary products against the further decomposition in the discharge phase by enabling these products to adhere to the trap. Since the partial pressures of CO and N decreased at rates of 1.5-1.7 cmHg day and 0.1-0.2 cmHg day, respectively, the gases were added at regular intervals. The solution was analyzed at regular intervals for HCN, HCHO and urea, and maximum concentrations of about 50, 2, and 140 mM were observed. The discharge phase was continued for 6 months. A sequence-ordered, periodic copolymer of ethylene, ethylene, and acrylic acid, poly (ethylene- per-ethylene- per-acrylic acid) (PEEA), with Mw=1.44×105 has been synthesized by alternating copolymerization of 1,3-butadiene and methyl acrylate, followed by hydrogenation and hydrolysis. Aqueous solution and dissociation properties of the alkali-soluble PEEA were explored by potentiometric titration and intrinsic viscosity at 25 °C. The pH values of PEEA were almost constant (pH = 6.48 ∼ 6.55) with an increasing degree of dissociation (α) from 0.3 to 0.8 at Cs=50 mN NaCl. Correspondingly, the plots of negative logarithm of apparent dissociation constant (p Ka) against α showed a reversed S-shape curve over the whole α, indicating an extensive precipitation and subsequent tran-sition from compact to coiled conformation. The intrinsic viscosity steeply increased with α above 0.4 up to 9.97 dl/g at α = 1.0. Good agreement between the observed electrostatic potential and that calculated from the rod model with a smeared charge density was observed in the region of α higher than 0.9. Hyper progressive disease (HPD) is a paradoxical phenomenon characterized by accelerated tumor growth following treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, the pathogenic causality and its predictor remain unknown. We herein report a fatal case of HPD in a 50-year-old man with metastatic bladder cancer. He had achieved a complete response (CR) through chemoradiation therapy followed by twelve cycles of chemotherapy, maintaining CR for 24 months. Three weeks after initiating maintenance use of a PD-L1 inhibitor, avelumab, a massive amount of metastases developed, leading to the patient's demise. Omics analysis, utilizing metastatic tissues obtained from an immediate autopsy, implied the contribution of M2 macrophages, TGF-β signaling, and interleukin-8 to HPD pathogenesis., (© 2024.
