Recent interest in integrated crop-livestock (ICL) systems has prompted numerous investigations to quantify ecosystem service tradeoffs associated with management. However, few investigations have quantified ICL management effects on net global warming potential (GWP), particularly in semiarid regions. Therefore, we determined net GWP for grazed and ungrazed cropland in a long-term ICL study near Mandan, ND USA. Factors evaluated for their contribution to net GWP included carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with production inputs and field operations, methane (CH4) emissions from enteric fermentation by beef cattle, change in soil carbon stocks, and soil-atmosphere CH4 and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes. Net GWP was significantly greater for grazed cropland (946 kg CO2equiv. ha-1 yr-1) compared to ungrazed cropland (200 kg CO2equiv. ha-1 yr-1) (P=0.0331). The difference in net GWP between treatments was largely driven by emissions from enteric fermentation (602 kg CO2equiv. ha-1 yr-1). Among other contributing factors, CO2 emissions associated with seed production and field operations were lower under ungrazed cropland (P = 0.0015 and 0.0135, respectively), while soil CH4 uptake was greater under grazed cropland (P = 0.0102). Soil-atmosphere N2O flux from each system negated nearly all the CO2equiv. sink capacity accrued from soil carbon stock change. As both production systems resulted in net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere, novel practices that constrain GHG sources and boost GHG sinks under semiarid conditions are recommended. Perennial grass systems are being evaluated as a bioenergy feedstock in the northern Great Plains. Inter-annual and inter-seasonal precipitation variation in this region will require efficient water use to maintain sufficient yield production to support a mature bioenergy industry. Objectives were to evaluate the impact of a May-June (early season) and a July-August (late season) drought on the water use efficiency (WUE), amount of water used, and biomass production in monocultures of switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L.), western wheatgrass ( Pascopyrum smithii (Rydb.) Á. Löve), and a western wheatgrass-alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L.) mixture using an automated rainout shelter. WUE was strongly driven by biomass accumulation and ranged from 5.6 to 7.4 g biomass mm water for switchgrass to 1.06 to 2.07 g biomass mm water used with western wheatgrass. Timing of water stress affected WUE more in western wheatgrass and the western wheatgrass-alfalfa mixture than switchgrass. Water deficit for the western wheatgrass-alfalfa mixture was 23 % lower than western wheatgrass ( P = 0.0045) and 31 % lower than switchgrass ( P < 0.0001) under the May-June stress water treatment, while switchgrass had a 37 and 38 % greater water deficit than did western wheatgrass or western wheatgrass-alfalfa mixture, respectively ( P < 0.001) under the July-August water stress treatment. Water depletion was always greatest in the upper 30 cm. Switchgrass had greater WUE but resulted in greater soil water depletion at the end of the growing season compared to western wheatgrass and a western wheatgrass-alfalfa mixture which may be a concern under multi-year drought conditions. Studies of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) diversity in non-model vertebrates typically focus on structure and sequence variation in the antigen-presenting loci: the highly variable and polymorphic class I and class IIB genes. Although these studies provide estimates of the number of genes and alleles/locus, they often overlook variation in functionally related and co-inherited genes important in the immune response. This study utilizes the sequence of the MHC B-locus derived from a commercial turkey to investigate MHC variation in wild birds. Sequences were obtained for nine interspersed MHC amplicons (non-class I/II) from each of 40 birds representing 3 subspecies of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Analysis of aligned sequences identified 238 single-nucleotide variants approximately one-third of which had minor allele frequencies >0.2 in the sampled birds. PHASE analysis identified 70 prospective MHC haplotypes in the wild turkeys, whereas a combined analysis with commercial birds identified almost 100 haplotypes in the species. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of the class IIB loci was used to test the efficacy of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) haplotyping to capture locus-wide variation. Diversity in SNP haplotypes and haplotype sharing among individuals was directly reflected in the DGGE patterns. Utilization of a reference haplotype to sequence interspersed regions of the MHC has significant advantages over other methods of surveying diversity while identifying high-frequency SNPs for genotyping. SNP haplotyping provides a means to identify both divergent haplotypes and homozygous individuals for assessment of immunological variation in wild and domestic populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems allow the study of a variety of fundamental quantum-optics phenomena, such as entanglement, quantum decoherence and the quantum-classical boundary. Such systems also provide test beds for quantum information science. Nearly all strongly coupled cavity QED experiments have used a single atom in a high-quality-factor (high-Q) cavity. Here we report the experimental realization of a strongly coupled system in the solid state: a single quantum dot embedded in the spacer of a nanocavity, showing vacuum-field Rabi splitting exceeding the decoherence linewidths of both the nanocavity and the quantum dot. This requires a small-volume cavity and an atomic-like two-level system. The photonic crystal slab nanocavity-which traps photons when a defect is introduced inside the two-dimensional photonic bandgap by leaving out one or more holes-has both high Q and small modal volume V, as required for strong light-matter interactions. The quantum dot has two discrete energy levels with a transition dipole moment much larger than that of an atom, and it is fixed in the nanocavity during growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occurrence, longevity, and contribution of axillary bud banks to population maintenance were investigated in a late-seral perennial grass, Bouteloua curtipendula, and a mid-seral perennial grass, Hilaria belangeri, in a semiarid oak-juniper savanna. Axillary buds of both species were evaluated over a 2-year period in communities with contrasting histories of grazing by domestic herbivores. A double staining procedure utilizing triphenyl tetrazolium chloride and Evan's blue indicated that both viable and dormant axillary buds remained attached to the base of reproductive parental tillers for 18–24 months which exceeded parental tiller longevity by approximately 12 months. Bud longevity of the late-seral species, B. curtipendula, exceeded bud longevity of the mid-seral species, H. belangeri, by approximately 6 months. Younger buds located on the distal portion of the tiller base were 3.2 and 1.4 times more likely to grow out than older proximal buds of B. curtipendula and H. belangeri, respectively. The percentage of older proximal buds, which included comparable portions of viable and dormant buds, that grew out to produce tillers following mortality of parental tillers was 6.0% for B. curtipendula and 8.4% for H. belangeri. In spite of the occurrence of relative large axillary bud banks for both species, the magnitude of proximal bud growth did not appear sufficient to maintain viable tiller populations. We found no evidence to support the hypothesis of compensatory bud growth on an individual tiller basis for either species. Grazing history of the communities from which the buds were collected did not substantially affect the number, status, longevity, or outgrowth of axillary buds on an individual tiller basis for either species. However, long-term grazing by domestic herbivores influenced axillary bud availability by modifying population structure of these two species. Bud number per square meter for B. curtipendula was 25% lower in the long-term grazed compared to the long-term ungrazed community based on a reduction in both tiller number per plant and plant number per square meter. In contrast, bud number per square meter for H. belangeri was 190% greater in the long-term grazed than in the long-term ungrazed community based on a large increase in plant density per square meter. Minimal contributions of axillary bud banks to annual maintenance of tiller populations in this mid- and late-seral species underscores the ecological importance of consistent tiller recruitment from recently developed axillary buds. Consistent tiller recruitment in grasslands and savannas characterized by intensive grazing and periodic drought implies that (1) bud differentiation and maturation must be remarkably tolerant of adverse environmental conditions and/or (2) tiller recruitment may resume from buds that mature following the cessation of severe drought and/or grazing, rather than from mature buds that survive these disturbances. These scenarios warrant additional research emphasis given the critical importance of this demographic process to tiller replacement in species populations and the maintenance of relative species abundance in grasslands and savannas. This paper presents an experimental technique for measuring internal strains of loaded artificial solids by means of single-strand, strain-gage wires. Specifically, in the present investigation, strain-gage wires were embedded lengthwise within rectangular prisms which were made of either pure-epoxy resin or silica crystals in an epoxy-resin matrix. Several prisms of both types were compressed longitudinally or loaded as simply supported beams. Experimentally measured unidirectional internal strains are compared with theoretically expected values, and agreement between experiment and theory is good.
