In a study of the clinical importance of polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN) for the monitoring of wound healing we investigated the postsurgical course of nine patients all of whom had undergone trauma surgery and had no wound complications. The "stimulated random PMN locomotion" was evaluated by a new migration filter device which preserves the cells in their genuine priming state, simulating in vivo conditions. The percentage of all activated PMN, expressed by the total migration index (TMI) reflected the highest median immediately after surgery (Zmax = 30.1%) and dropped to the lowest value on day 13 (Zmin = 13.9%). The mean invasion depth (T/2) of the cells along the migration distance into the filter showed only slight variations over time. The neutrophil migration activity (NMA), described by T/2 and TMI, behaved in a similar way to TMI. In studying physiological healing, preliminary results indicate that TMI, which expresses PMN activation, is an efficient tool in the postoperative monitoring of patients, and might in the future serve as a basis for an early warning system for wound healing complications. We present the measurements and the analysis of nonlinearity of Ge- and InGaAs-photodiodes responsivity measured at high irradiance levels (up to ∼ 90 mW / mm2) in the near infrared. The nonlinearity was measured using a fiber-optics-based setup which employs the Differential Spectral Responsivity (DSR) technique. The measurements of the nonlinearity were carried out at different laser beam diameters with fiber optic attachment as well as open-beam. Dispersal has a significant impact on lifetime reproductive success, and is often more prevalent in one sex than the other. In group-living mammals, dispersal is normally male-biased and in theory this sexual bias could be a response by males to female mate preferences, competition for access to females or resources, or the result of males avoiding inbreeding. There is a lack of studies on social mammals that simultaneously assess these factors and measure the fitness consequences of male dispersal decisions. Here we show that male-biased dispersal in the spotted hyaena (Crocuta crocuta) most probably results from an adaptive response by males to simple female mate-choice rules that have evolved to avoid inbreeding. Microsatellite profiling revealed that females preferred sires that were born into or immigrated into the female’s group after the female was born. Furthermore, young females preferred short-tenured sires and older females preferred longer-tenured sires. Males responded to these female mate preferences by initiating their reproductive careers in groups containing the highest number of young females. As a consequence, 11% of males started their reproductive career in their natal group and 89% of males dispersed. Males that started reproduction in groups containing the highest number of young females had a higher long-term reproductive success than males that did not. The female mate-choice rules ensured that females effectively avoided inbreeding without the need to discriminate directly against close kin or males born in their own group, or to favour immigrant males. The extent of male dispersal as a response to such female mate preferences depends on the demographic structure of breeding groups, rather than the genetic relatedness between females and males. Immune response to viral infection is an important determinant of liver injury in chronic hepatitis C (CHC). Experimental and clinical data suggest a protective role of interleukin-10 (IL-10) in hepatic fibrogenesis. The significance of two SNPs of the interleukin-10 receptor 1 (IL-10R1), S138G (SNP3) and G330R (SNP4) was investigated on (i) susceptibility to CHC, (ii) progression of hepatic fibrosis and (iii) response to interferon/ribavirin therapy. DNA and liver biopsies were obtained from 212 patients with HCV (hepatitis C virus)-genotype-1 infection. The allele frequencies were 0.17 for SNP3 and 0.33 for SNP4, both of which were indifferent from healthy controls (0.17 and 0.32, respectively). Stage 1 liver fibrosis was found in 22 cases (10.4%), stage 2 in 108 (50.9%), stage 3 in 27 (12.8%), and stage 4 (cirrhosis) in 55 (25.9%). An association was found between the SNP4 allele and the presence of cirrhosis (P=0.01). Homozygous SNP4 individual variants segregated within the cirrhosis group (P=0.03). We found neither an association with SNP3 nor with the necroinflammatory disease activity (as measured by ALT levels) nor with the response to antiviral therapy. The main objective of this work was the optimization of the production of the β-ketolase, acetopyruvate hydrolase, from Pseudomonas putida O1. Orcinol was used as an inducer for enzyme production. The growth medium was optimized in two steps. In the first step, screening for optimal glucose concentration was performed. In the second step, a central composite design was used to optimize carbon and nitrogen sources in the medium. After this optimization procedure, a medium was obtained which produced seven times more biomass than the initial medium. Acetopyruvate hydrolase enzyme production was optimized by determining the optimal time of feed and amount of orcinol, using statistical methods. In a subsequent step, the maximal orcinol-degradation rate was determined. The results obtained were used to find an optimal feeding profile for enzyme production. By using the optimized fed-batch process, acetopyruvate hydrolase activity was enhanced from 10 units l–1 to 400 units l–1, in comparison with previously reported fermentation experiments. The remarkable cognitive abilities of bats indicate that they may recognise particular conspecifics. Because of their highly developed auditory system, it is obvious that vocalisations of bats may give information about the individual emitting them. In a field study of the social behaviour in the Indian false vampire bat ( Megaderma lyra), two different types of vocalisation were recorded and analysed. The bats emitted these vocalisations only while aggregating with conspecifics inside the day roost. The “landing strophe” consisted of a number of brief multiharmonic downward frequency-modulated (FMdown) sounds which levelled off as a constant frequency (CF), and the “clatter strophe” was composed of a number of multiharmonic FMdown sounds which became shallow at the end as a short CF. The sounds of the landing strophe and the ¶clatter strophe differed in repetition rate, duration, harmonic components and frequency. Time pattern and peak frequency of the two sound types differed highly significantly between single, unidentified bats. The sounds were inter-individually distinct when the three parameters were combined as an acoustical space. Therefore, these vocalisations might be used for individual recognition in adult bats. Incomplete bone contact with threaded acetabular components is usually attributable to the tapered thread design and sclerotic bone, and might be the reason for early loosening. The self-tapping flat threads of the Hofer-Imhof cup allow accurate insertion without incarceration, even in sclerotic bone. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this threaded cup design based on digitized measurements of bone contact area, six Hofer-Imhof cups were implanted into three human cadavers. The bone contact area at the threads was digitally analyzed on cadaver-explanted cups cut into horizontal and coronal sections. In cups fixed with ideal form fit, bone contact was 31.6% (range 8–55%) at the threads and 28.5% (range 0–49%) between the threads on average. In cups with incomplete bone contact secondary to insufficient reaming, the bone contact area averaged 27.4% (range 10–44%) at the threads. In sclerotic bone, the highest bone contact at the threads was 69%. The threads were the first part of the cup to achieve primary bone contact. Factors contributing to poor contact were incomplete reaming, sections which passed through the incisura of the acetabulum, and incomplete contact with the medial aspect of the acetabulum. The secretory vesicles of some cells of the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas contain high amounts of immunoreactive tyrosine phosphatase of the PTP1B/TCPTP subfamily. The cells are located in the peripheral parts of the islets and were identified as glucagon- and pancreatic polypeptide-forming cells. The tyrosine phosphatase is also enriched in some of the somatostatin-producing cells but is not elevated either in insulin-producing B-cells or in the exocrine pancreas. Virtually the same patterns were found in pancretic tissues of rats, guinea pigs, pigs, and mice. High levels of detergent-soluble tyrosine phosphatase were measured in the particular fraction of pancreatic islets with a substrate preferred by PTP1B/TCPTP-type protein tyrosine phosphatases. In this paper we introduce symplectic invariants for convex Hamiltonian energy surfaces and their periodic trajectories and show that these quentities satisfy several nontrivial relations. Clarke has shown that the problem of finding T-periodic solutions for a convex Hamiltonian system is equivalent to the problem of finding critical points to a certain functional, dual to the classical action functional. In this paper, we relate the Morse index of the critical point to the minimal period of the corresponding T-periodic solution. In particular, we show that if the critical point is obtained by the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz mountain-pass theorem the corresponding solution has minimal period T, that is, it cannot be T/k-periodic with k integer, k≧2. As a consequence, we prove that if the Hamiltonian is flat near an equilibrium and superquadratic near infinity, then for any T>0, the corresponding Hamiltonian system has a periodic solution with minimal period T. Muscle fibers re commonly classified histochemically into three types by the staining intensity for myosin ATPase combined with those for metabolic enzymes. Preincubation at pH 4.6 gives rise to three staining intensities of myosin ATPase which are also used for fiber typing. The two classification systems were compared by computer analysis of the individual staining profiles of over 2,500 fibers, and found not to be equivalent. The analysis showed metabolic heterogeneity among the fiber groups distinguished according to their differences in myosin ATPase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a measurement of the production of muon pairs in 194 GeV/c π-tungsten interactions. A sample of 155,000 events with mass higher than 4.07 GeV/c has been used to determine the differential cross-section as a function of the scaling variables $$\sqrt \tau $$ and x. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The differential cross-section for dimuon production by 194 GeV/c π on W, as measured by the NA10 Collaboration, is compared with theoretical models. The wide kinematical range of the data, extending well above the ϒ resonances, provides the opportunity of a comparison with 'realistic' Drell-Yan models, i.e. with those allowing for scaling violation in the hadronic structure functions. The data in fact clearly indicate the failure of the 'naïve' Drell-Yan model, while the available 'realistic' versions (leading logarithm approximation and next-to-leading logarithm approximation in first order QCD), although giving a better description of the data, still disagree in the x and $$\sqrt \tau $$ dependences of the cross-section at high dimuon masses. This disagreement is referred to here as 'anomalous' scaling violation. The dependence of the results on external inputs (nucleon and pion-sea structure functions) is analysed; it is shown that in the next-to-leading logarithm approximation the value 〈 K〉=1.03±0.03 (stat.) can be obtained for the ratio experimental/theoretical cross-section. Many unstable fractures and fracture dislocations of the lower thoracic and the lumbar spine are treated operatively. Internal fixation is mostly done via a posterior approach, anchoring the screws in the pedicles of the vertebrae. In the Traumatology Section of the Department of Surgery, Graz University, three different implantation systems have been employed in recent years. Sixty of all the patients operated on were available for follow-up an average of 36 months after operation. The (He, d) and ( α,t) single-proton transfer reactions on targets ofSm,Gd andGd were studied at 35MeV incident energy. Differential cross sections of rotational states built upon various single-proton configurations are compared with results of DWBA calculations which employed various radial form factors. The agreement between calculated and measured reaction cross sections is found to improve significantly when the commonly used spherical bound-state potentials are replaced by deformed ones, including deformed Coulomb and spin-orbit wells, and projected form factors are used to calculate DWBA cross sections. Discrepancies in the differential cross sections so large that they cannot be attributed to band mixing phenomena are readily explained by form factor effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the angular distributions of muon pairs obtained in a high-statistics experiment using a 194-GeV/c π impinging on a tungsten target. Our results are based on the analysis of 145,000 events with positive Feynman x and mass above 4.07 GeV/c, excluding the ϒ region. Simple first-order QCD relations allow us to determine the ratio of annihilation with hard-gluon emission to the sum of annihilation with hard-gluon emission and hard-gluon Compton scattering, which is found to be about 58% to 75%. We determine the parton square intrinsic transverse momenta to be of the order of 0.6 (GeV/c), and about 30% larger in the pion than in the nucleon. At large x, our data agree with the higher-twist hypothesis, and support the interpretation of the relevant scale parameter as the dimuon square transverse momentum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
