The purpose of this study was to investigate possible relationships between parental rearing practices and problem behaviours in a sample of male delinquent adolescents versus controls. A total of 133 subjects from a juvenile correction centre and 108 matched school-children in the Arkhangelsk region, Russia, were assessed by means of the EMBU questionnaire and Youth Self-Report. Delinquents were more severely treated by parents and had more pronounced problem scores. Furthermore, problem scores were found to be highly correlated with parental rejection and lack of emotional warmth in both delinquents and controls. Parental rearing practices may influence the development of problem behaviours. The implications of these findings with regard to preventive measures are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to assess the impact of atomoxetine in combination with psychoeducation, compared with placebo and psychoeducation, on health-related quality of life (HRQL) in Swedish stimulant-naïve pediatric patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). HRQL results will be presented elsewhere. Here, psychoeducation as well as efficacy and safety of the treatment are described. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 99 pediatric ADHD patients were randomized to a 10-week double-blind treatment with atomoxetine (49 patients) or placebo (50 patients). Parents of all patients received four sessions of psychoeducation. Atomoxetine was dosed up to approximately 1.2 mg/kg day (< or = 70 kg) or 80 mg/day (> 70 kg). Improvement of ADHD symptoms was evaluated using the ADHD rating scale (ADHD-RS) and clinical global impression (CGI) rating scales. Safety was assessed based on adverse events (AEs). RESULTS: The study population was predominantly male (80.8%) and diagnosed with the combined ADHD subtype (77.8%). The least square mean (lsmean) change from baseline to endpoint in total ADHD-RS score was -19.0 for atomoxetine patients and -6.3 for placebo patients, resulting in an effect size (ES) of 1.3 at endpoint. Treatment response (reduction in ADHD-RS score of > or = 25 or > or = 40%) was achieved in 71.4 or 63.3% of atomoxetine patients and 28.6 or 14.3% of placebo patients. The lsmean change from baseline to endpoint in CGI-Severity was -1.8 in the atomoxetine group compared with -0.3 in the placebo group. The difference between treatments in CGI-Improvement at endpoint was -1.4 in favor of atomoxetine. No serious AEs occurred. The safety profile of atomoxetine was in line with the current label. CONCLUSIONS: Atomoxetine combined with psychoeducation was superior to placebo and psychoeducation in ADHD core symptoms improvement. The large ES might be a result of including stimulant-naïve patients only, but also may indicate a positive interaction between atomoxetine treatment and psychoeducation, possibly by increased compliance. The aim of the study was to provide a standardisation of self-reported competencies and emotional/behavioural problems among Swedish adolescents, using the Youth Self-Report (YSR). The YSR was completed by 2522 adolescents aged 13–18 years, recruited from secondary and upper secondary schools in different regions in Sweden. The results showed that effects of gender and age were small but significant with girls scoring higher than boys on most problem scales, and 15- to 16-year-olds scoring higher than younger and older adolescents on the problem scales. Small effects were also found for residence as well as for parental SES. The correlations between internalising and externalising problems were 0.51 for boys and 0.49 for girls, whereas the correlation between competence and problem scores was low. We conclude that the individual variation in YSR-scores is much greater than can be attributed to factors such as gender, age, SES, or residential area. Consequently, the YSR has the potential to serve as an instrument for assessing individual adolescents' self-reported competencies and problems in Sweden. Abstract The purpose of the present study was 1) to assess the predictive value of conduct problems prior to the age of 12 for the severity of antisocial behaviour during adolescence, and 2) to investigate the relationships between personality traits/parental rearing and childhood conduct problems/teenage antisocial behaviour. A group of 193 delinquents was assessed by means of the Antisocial Behavior Checklist (ABC), the Retrospective Childhood Problems (RETROPROB), the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the EMBU questionnaire on parental rearing. The extreme groups of delinquents as defined by childhood conduct problems, differed significantly on the experience of a rejecting father and a self-directed character. Furthermore, some specific predictive patterns for current antisocial behaviour by childhood conduct disorder and both personality dimensions and parental rearing factors emerged. The findings are discussed in the light of the interactive nature of relations between personality and parental rearing in the development of antisocial behaviour among adolescents. This study is part of a nationwide case-referent study. All recent-onset Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetic children aged 0-14 years in Sweden were invited to participate. Referent subjects matched for age-, sex- and geographical distribution were selected. In all, 338 patients and 528 referent subjects took part. Life events during the last year prior to clinical onset of Type 1 diabetes were recorded on a questionnaire. The total frequency of life events did not differ between diabetic and referent children. However, qualitatively the life events reported by diabetic children revealed a tendency to increased severity. Events related specifically to actual or threatened losses within the family - events that may affect children differently in different age groups - were reported with a significantly higher frequency by diabetic patients than by referent subjects, aged 5-9 years. The relative risk that such events in fact comprise a risk factor for Type 1 diabetes was 1.82 (95% confidence limits 1.09, 3.03). The relative risk was significantly increased even when standardized for possible confounding factors such as age, sex and indices of social status of the family. We conclude that stressful life events, related to actual or threatened losses within the family, occurring in the vulnerable age group of 5-9 years, are associated with the onset of childhood Type 1 diabetes. Since 1 July 1977, all newly diagnosed diabetic children in Sweden aged 0-14 years have been reported to a central register. During the first 6 years, 2300 newly diagnosed diabetic children out of a population of 1.6 million children were registered. The degree of certainty was close to 100%. The mean of the yearly incidence rate for the whole 6 year period was 23.6 per 100000. The prevalence of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus on 1 July 1980 was 1.48 per 1000 and 1.52 on 1 July 1983. Comparing the first and second 3-year periods, an increase was found (22.7-25.1 per 100000). This increase was consistent when analyzing incidence rates by age, sex, and geographical distribution. Cumulative incidence rates revealed a risk of developing diabetes by the age of 15 years of 3.6 per thousand for boys and 3.2 per thousand for girls. The higher incidence for boys was consistent throughout the study period. Seasonal variations in the incidence rate were also consistent, showing yearly incidence peaks in the autumn and winter months. Incidence peaks were noted for both sexes in the pubertal ages. Age- and sex-standardized morbidity ratios varied significantly within the country. 12.8% of the probands had a first degree relative with Type 1 diabetes, and it was twice as common that this relative was a father as a mother. The high and rapidly increasing incidence of Type 1 diabetes in a genetically stable population such as Sweden calls for case-control studies directed towards the identification of environmental pathogens. Islet cell cytoplasmic and cell surface antibodies along with other autogenic tissue antibodies were determined prospectively from the day of diagnosis of insulin-dependent diabetes in a group of children and adolescents. Prior to the initiation of insulin therapy 30 out of 33 were antibody-positive, 67% having islet cytoplasmic antibodies and 67% islet cell surface antibodies. Among 74 age- and sex-matched non-diabetic individuals 1% had islet cell cytoplasmic antibodies and 3% had islet cell surface antibodies. A prospective analysis in 17 patients showed a diminishing prevalence of islet cell antibodies with increasing duration of diabetes. Islet cell cytoplasmic or cell surface antibodies were found independently of each other or in combination and with various patterns of persistence. The results indicate a strong association of islet cell antibodies with the onset of insulin-dependent diabetes in childhood and adolescence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
