Purpose/objectives: We sought to investigate the impact of patient-reported outcomes version of the common terminology criteria for adverse events (PRO-CTCAE) on overall quality-of-life (QOL) employing linear analogue self-assessment (LASA) in breast cancer (BC) patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT). Materials/methods: All patients treated with RT for BC with curative intent from 2015 to 2019 at our institution were included. Breast specific PRO-CTCAE and overall QOL LASA questionnaires were administered at baseline, end-of-treatment, 3, 6, 12 months, and then annually. Minimal clinically important difference in overall QOL was a 10-point change in LASA. Hypofractionation was any treatment > 2 Gy per fraction. Mixed models for repeated measures were used to determine the association of PRO-CTCAE and overall QOL LASA. Results: Three hundred thirty-one (331) patients with a median follow-up of 3.1 years (range 0.4–4.9) were included. Average overall QOL LASA scores were 78.5 at baseline, 79.8 at end-of-treatment, 79.8 at 3 months, 77.1 at 6 months, 79.4 at 12 months, and 79.7 at 24 months. On univariate analysis, patients reporting a grade ≥ 3 PRO-CTCAE had, on average, a 10.4-point reduction in overall LASA QOL (p < 0.0001). On multivariate analysis, not being treated with hypofractionation and higher BMI were predictive for worse overall LASA QOL with a 10-point reduction in LASA for patients reporting a grade ≥ 3 PRO-CTCAE (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Patients reporting a grade ≥ 3 PRO-CTCAE experienced statistically significant and clinically meaningful deterioration in overall QOL LASA. Recent advancements in arthroplasty surgical techniques and perioperative protocols have reduced the duration of hospitalization and length of recovery, allowing surgeons to perform joint replacement as an outpatient procedure. This study aims to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and safety of outpatient hip resurfacing. Two experienced surgeons performed 485 resurfacing surgeries. We retrospectively compared clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction with published outpatient total hip results. Furthermore, we compared average insurance reimbursement with that of local inpatient hip replacement. No major complications occurred within 6 weeks. Of the 39 patients with previous inpatient experience, 37 (95%) believed their outpatient experience was superior. The average reimbursement for hip arthroplasty at local hospitals was $50,000, while the average payment for outpatient resurfacing at our surgery center was $26,000. We conclude that outpatient hip resurfacing can be accomplished safely, with high patient satisfaction, and at a tremendous financial savings to the insurer/patient. The temperature dependence of the failure stress of RTM6 resin under nearly pure hydrostatic tension was measured for two standard curing cycles. The stress in the resin was achieved by confining the resin in capped quartz tubes while cooling from the curing temperature. The stress was estimated from the deflection of the outer wall of the quartz tube relative to its unstressed diameter assuming linear elasticity. The failure stress increased monotonically on cooling from the curing temperature and reached a maximum value of 28 MPa at 108 °C. This value is roughly consistent with the failure stress estimated from a void initiation failure criterion using room temperature tensile strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent advances in novel functional imaging techniques such as PSMA PET may now offer the ability to identify small volume metastases which may otherwise go undetected. The treatment of these lesions is controversial, particularly in the oligometastatic state. We report the case of an abdominal wall metastasis detected with PSMA imaging which we treated with surgical excision. This resulted in an undetectable PSA 6 weeks post excision. The paper considers the history of the hydrostatic pressure in a liquid hermetically confined to a fixed volume when a bubble rises in it. This case differs remarkably and substantially from the case of a liquid with a free surface. Under ideal conditions, it turns out that the bubble conveys its pressure from bottom to top causing a pressure rise of the entire liquid. A special experiment on laboratory scale demonstrates what the deviations from ideality amount to and how they can be explained. For bubbles of sufficient size, 95% of the ideal pressure rise could be gained. Although this effect is of notable technical importance, e.g., in pipeline engineering, it has escaped notice. A letter to the editor is presented regarding the effectiveness of rituximab with multiagent chemotherapy regimens in the treatment of advanced mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) in children and adolescents.

Childhood autologous hematopoietic cell transplant (auto-HCT) survivors can be at risk for secondary malignant neoplasms (SMNs). We assembled a cohort of 1487 pediatric auto-HCT recipients to investigate the incidence and risk factors for SMNs. Primary diagnoses included neuroblastoma (39%), lymphoma (26%), sarcoma (18%), central nervous system tumors (14%) and Wilms tumor (2%). Median follow-up was 8 years (range, <1-21 years). SMNs were reported in 35 patients (AML/myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)=13, solid cancers=20, subtype missing=2). The overall cumulative incidence of SMNs at 10 years from auto-HCT was 2.60% (AML/MDS=1.06%, solid tumors=1.30%). We found no association between SMNs risk and age, gender, diagnosis, disease status, time since diagnosis or use of TBI or etoposide as part of conditioning. OS at 5-years from diagnosis of SMNs was 33% (95% confidence interval (CI), 16-52%). When compared with age- and gender-matched general population, auto-HCT recipients had 24 times higher risks of developing SMNs (95% CI, 16.0-33.0). Notable SMN sites included bone (N=5 SMNs, observed (O)/expected (E)=81), thyroid (N=5, O/E=53), breast (N=2, O/E=93), soft tissue (N=2, O/E=34), AML (N=6, O/E=266) and MDS (N=7, O/E=6603). Risks of SMNs increased with longer follow-up from auto-HCT. Pediatric auto-HCT recipients are at considerably increased risk for SMNs and need life-long surveillance for SMNs. Tacrolimus is routinely administered for GVHD prophylaxis as a 24-h continuous infusion that requires a dedicated i.v. line and thus becomes logistically difficult to administer, especially in young pediatric patients. We investigated the safety and efficacy of twice daily bolus infusions of i.v. tacrolimus in 33 children undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) at our institution. Tacrolimus was started at an initial dose of 0.015 mg/kg i.v. bolus administered as a 2-h infusion and then given at every 12 h to maintain a trough drug level between 5-15 ng/mL. Patients also received short-course MTX (66%) or mycophenolate mofetil (34%) in combination with tacrolimus. No acute infusional toxicities were observed with bolus infusions of i.v. tacrolimus. Nephrotoxicity occurred in 14/33 (42%) patients and 48% developed hypertension (HT). Almost all (94%) patients required magnesium supplements to maintain magnesium (Mg) levels 1.5 mg/dL. In all, 3 (9%) patients developed severe sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS). One patient developed posterior reversible leuko-encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) and one additional patient had tremors. The prevelance of these side-effects was similar to those reported for continuous i.v. administration. In all, 28% of the evaluable patients developed acute GVHDgrade II, though the incidence of severe (grade III-IV) GVHD was only 7%. Summary: Osteocyte sclerostin is regulated by loading and disuse in mouse tibiae but is more closely related to subsequent local osteogenesis than the peak strains engendered. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between loading-related change in osteocyte sclerostin expression, local strain magnitude, and local bone modeling/remodeling. Methods: The right tibiae of 19-week-old female C57BL/6 mice were subjected to non-invasive, dynamic axial loading and/or to sciatic neurectomy-induced disuse. The sclerostin status of osteocytes was evaluated immunohistochemically, changes in bone mass by micro-computed tomography, new bone formation by histomorphometry, and loading-induced strain by strain gauges and finite element analysis. Results: In cortical bone of the tibial shaft, loading engendered strains of similar peak magnitude proximally and distally. Proximally, sclerostin-positive osteocytes decreased and new bone formation increased. Distally, there was neither decrease in sclerostin-positive osteocytes nor increased osteogenesis. In trabecular bone of the proximal secondary spongiosa, loading decreased sclerostin-positive osteocytes and increased bone volume. Neither occurred in the primary spongiosa. Disuse increased sclerostin-positive osteocytes and decreased bone volume at all four sites. Loading reversed this sclerostin upregulation to a level below baseline in the proximal cortex and secondary spongiosa. Conclusion: Loading-related sclerostin downregulation in osteocytes of the mouse tibia is associated preferentially with regions where new bone formation is stimulated rather than where high peak strains are engendered. The mechanisms involved remain unclear, but could relate to peak surface strains not accurately reflecting the strain-related osteogenic stimulus or that sclerostin regulation occurs after sufficient signal processing to distinguish between local osteogenic and non-osteogenic responses. The Rock-Paper-Scissors (RPS) game is a paradigmatic model for cyclic dominance in biological systems. Here we consider this game in the social context of competition between opinions in a networked society. In our model, every agent has an opinion which is drawn from the three choices: rock, paper or scissors. In every timestep a link is selected randomly and the game is played between the nodes connected by the link. The loser either adopts the opinion of the winner or rewires the link. These rules define an adaptive network on which the agents' opinions coevolve with the network topology of social contacts. We show analytically and numerically that nonequilibrium phase transitions occur as a function of the rewiring strength. The transitions separate four distinct phases which differ in the observed dynamics of opinions and topology. In particular, there is one phase where the population settles to an arbitrary consensus opinion. We present a detailed analysis of the corresponding transitions revealing an apparently paradoxical behavior. To better understand the risk of secondary vertebral compression fracture (VCF) following a vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, we compared patients treated with those procedures to patients with a previous VCF. The risk of subsequent fracture was significantly greater among treatment patients, especially within 90 days of the procedure. Predominantly uncontrolled studies suggest a greater risk of subsequent vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) associated with vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty. To further understand this risk, we conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using data from a large regional health insurer. Administrative claims procedure codes were used to identify patients receiving either a vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty (treatment group) and a comparison group of patients with a primary diagnosis of VCF who did not receive treatment during the same time period. The main outcomes of interest, validated by two independent medical record reviewers, were any new VCFs within (1) 90 days, (2) 360 days, and (3) at adjacent vertebral levels. Multivariable logistic regression examined the association of vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty with new VCFs. Among 48 treatment (51% vertebroplasty, 49% kyphoplasty) and 164 comparison patients, treated patients had a significantly greater risk of secondary VCFs than comparison patients for fractures within 90 days of the procedure or comparison group time point [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 6.8; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.7–26.9] and within 360 days (adjusted OR = 2.9; 95% CI 1.1–7.9). We report outcomes after unrelated donor hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) for 91 patients with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) transplanted in the US in 1989–2005. Fifty-one percent were <1 year at HCT and 29% had Lansky performance scores <90%. Most (80%) were conditioned with BU, CY, and etoposide (VP16) with or without anti-thymocyte globulin. Bone marrow was the predominant graft source. Neutrophil recovery was 91% at day-42. The probabilities of grades 2–4 acute GVHD at day-100 and chronic GVHD at 5 years were 41 and 23%, respectively. The overall mortality rate was higher in patients who did not receive BU/CY/VP16-conditioning regimen (RR 1.95, P=0.035). The 5-year probability of overall survival was 53% in patients who received BU/CY/VP16 compared to 24% in those who received other regimens. In the subset of patients with known disease-specific characteristics, only one of five patients with active disease at HCT is alive. For those in clinical remission at HCT (n=46), the 5-year probability of overall survival was 49%. Early mortality rates after HCT were high, 35% at day-100. As part of a larger investigation, northern pike ( n = 158; Esox lucius) were collected from ten sites in the Yukon River Basin (YRB), Alaska, to document biomarkers and their correlations with organochlorine pesticide (total p,p’-DDT, total chlordane, dieldrin, and toxaphene), total polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and elemental contaminant (arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, total mercury, selenium, and zinc) concentrations. A suite of biomarkers including somatic indices, hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity, vitellogenin concentrations, steroid hormone (17B- ustradiol and 16-kebtestosteront) concentrations, splenic macrophage aggregates (MAs), oocyte atresia, and other microscopic anomalies in various tissues were documented in YRB pike. Mean condition factor (0.50 to 0.68), hepatosomatic index (1.00% to 3.56%), and splenosomatic index (0.09% to 0.18%) were not anomalous at any site nor correlated with any contaminant concentration. Mean EROD activity (0.71 to 17.51 pmol/min/mg protein) was similar to basal activity levels previously measured in pike and was positively correlated with selenium concentrations ( r = 0.88, P < 0.01). Vitellogenin concentrations in female (0.09 to 5.32 mg/mL) and male (<0.0005 to 0.097 mg/mL) pike were not correlated with any contaminant, but vitellogenin concentrations >0.01 mg/mL in male pike from multiple sites indicated exposure to estrogenic compounds. Mean steroid hormone concentrations and percent oocyte atresia were not anomalous in pike from any YRB site. Few site differences were significant for mean MA density (1.86 to 6.42 MA/mm2), size (812 to 1481 μm2), and tissue occupied (MA-%; 0.24% to 0.75%). A linear regression between MA-% and total PCBs was significant, although PCB concentrations were generally low in YRB pike (≤63 ng/g), and MA-% values in female pike (0.24% to 0.54%) were lower than in male pike (0.32% to 0.75%) at similar PCB concentrations. Greater numbers of MAs were found as zinc concentrations increased in YRB female pike, but it is unlikely that this is a causative relationship. Histological abnormalities observed in gill, liver, spleen, and kidney tissues were not likely a result of contaminant exposure but provide information on the general health of YRB pike. The most common histologic anomalies were parasitic infestations in various organs and developing nephrons and nephrocalcinosis in posterior kidney tissues. Overall, few biomarker responses in YRB pike were correlated with chemical contaminant concentrations, and YRB pike generally appeared to be healthy with no site having multiple anomalous biomarker responses. Summary:X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP) is a rare immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the signaling lymphocyte activating molecule-associated protein/SH2D1A gene and characterized by a dysregulated immune response to Epstein–Barr virus and other pathogens. The clinical presentation is heterogeneous and includes fulminant infectious mononucleosis, lymphoma, hypogammaglobulinemia and aplastic anemia. XLP is associated with a high morbidity and overall outcome is poor. At present, allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) is the only curative treatment. XLP patients may be recognized in various stages of disease and even when symptoms are not yet evident. We here present two related XLP patients in different stages of disease that were both treated successfully with alloSCT using a matched unrelated donor. In addition, we have reviewed all reported cases of alloSCTs in XLP patients. The article presents a comparison of the effectiveness of sinking versus floating feeds as dietary administration routes for p,p'-DDE (2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1 -dichioroethylene) and dieldrin in largemouth bass or Micropterus salmiodes. Researches determined the variability of DDE and dieldrin accumulation inherent to each method and to determine their effects on circulating sex steroid levels after 50 days of exposure at the onset of reproductive season. After 30 days of exposure, treated bass had accumulated significant levels of DDE or dieldrin, regardless of feed type. The study concludes that exposing largemouth bass to organochlorine pesticides by incorporation into an oil carrier and subsequent coating of feed pellets is an effective, accurate, and reproducible dosing method.

Delayed or non-union of a sacral fracture is a serious clinical condition that may include chronic pain, sitting discomfort, gait disturbances, neurological problems, and inability to work. It is also a difficult reconstruction problem. Late correction of the deformity is technically more demanding than the primary treatment of acute pelvic injuries. Open reduction, internal fixation (ORIF), excision of scar tissue, and bone grafting often in a multi-step approach are considered to be the treatment of choice in delayed unions of the pelvic ring. This procedure implies the risk of neurological and vascular injuries, infection, repeated failure of union, incomplete correction of the deformity, and incomplete pain relief as the most important complications. We report a new approach for minimally invasive treatment of a delayed union of the sacrum without vertical displacement. A patient who suffered a Malgaigne fracture (Tile C1.3) was initially treated with closed reduction and percutaneous screw fixation (CRPF) of the posterior pelvic ring under CT navigation and plating of the anterior pelvic ring. Three months after surgery he presented with increasing hip pain caused by a delayed union of the sacral fracture. The lesion was successfully treated percutaneously in a single step procedure using CT navigation for drilling of the delayed union, autologous bone grafting, and screw fixation. This study evaluated the potential effects of different concentrations of bleached/unbleached kraft mill effluent (B/UKME) on several reproductive endpoints in adult largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The kraft mill studied produces a 50/50 mix of bleached/unbleached market pulp with an estimated release of 36 million gal of effluent/day. Bleaching sequences were C90d10EopHDp and CEHD for softwood (pines) and hardwoods (mainly tupelo, gums, magnolia, and water oaks), respectively. Bass were exposed to different effluent concentrations (0 [controls, exposed to well water], 10, 20, 40, or 80%) for either 28 or 56 days. At the end of each exposure period, fish were euthanized, gonads collected for histological evaluation and determination of gonadosomatic index (GSI), and plasma was analyzed for 17β-estradiol, 11-ketotestosterone, and vitellogenin (VTG). Largemouth bass exposed to B/UKME responded with changes at the biochemical level (decline in sex steroids in both sexes and VTG in females) that were usually translated into tissue/organ-level responses (declines in GSI in both sexes and in ovarian development in females). Although most of these responses occurred after exposing fish to 40% B/UKME concentrations or greater, some were observed after exposures to 20% B/UKME. These threshold concentrations fall within the 60% average yearly concentration of effluent that exists in the stream near the point of discharge (Rice Creek), but are above the <10% effluent concentration present in the St. Johns River. Self-diffusion coefficients were studied for the highly polar liquid N-methylformamide at pressures up to 200 MPa between the melting pressure curves and 420 K by the spin-echo method. N-Methylformamide exists as a mixture of two conformers in the neat liquid. These conformers have large differences at lower temperatures in their dynamic and structural properties. The self-diffusion coefficient of the cis-conformer being 17% lower than that of the trans-conformer at the same T and p. This is the first observation of such an effect. The experimental study is supported by Monte Carlo (MC) calculations which show that the first neighbors around a cis conformer are arranged differently than in an all trans liquid. The difference leads in the simulations to a much lower dielectric constant for the trans- cis mixture and might also explain the retardation of diffusion for the cis conformer. Abstract. We report core-level and valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and carbon K near-edge X-ray-absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) results of plasma-polymerized C[sub 60]. In comparison with evaporated C[sub 60] the Cls peak is broader and asymmetric tot the C[sub 60] polymer and its shake-up satellites diminished. Furthermore, the features of the valence-band as well as the features of the pi[sup *] antibonding orbitals of the C[sub 60] polymer are broader and reduced in intensity. Changes in the electronic structure are attributed to the polymerization of C[sub 60], the post-plasma functionalization of the surface by oxygen after exposure to atmosphere, and the occurrence of amorphous carbon. Twenty-six cases of B cell lymphoproliferative disorder (BLPD) were identified among 2395 patients following hematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCT) for which an overall incidence of BLPD was 1.2%. The true incidence was probably higher, since 9/26 of the diagnoses were made at autopsy. No BLPD was observed following autologous HSCT, so risk factor analyses were confined to the 1542 allogeneic HSCT. Factors assessed were HLA-mismatching (1 antigen), T cell depletion (TCD), presence of acute GvHD (grades II–IV), donor type (related vs unrelated), age of recipient and donor, and underlying disease. Factors found to be statistically significant included patients transplanted for immune deficiency and CML, donor age 18 years, TCD, and HLA-mismatching, with recipients of combined TCD and HLA-mismatched grafts having the highest incidence. Factors found to be statistically significant in a multiple regression analysis were TCD, donor age and immune deficiency, although 7/8 of the patients with immunodeficiencies and BLPD received a TCD graft from a haploidentical parent. The overall mortality was 92% (24/26). One patient had a spontaneous remission, but subsequently died >1 year later of chronic GVHD. Thirteen patients received therapy for BLPD. Three patients received lymphocyte infusions without response. The only patients with responses and long-term survival received alpha interferon αIFN). A scanning probe microscope was used to observe thermally induced deformation of 1 μm thick Cu/Ta/polyimide test structures on Si. Relative height changes in arrays of parallel Cu and polyimide lines of various aspect ratios were examined in air at room temperature before and after a 25-350-25°C thermal cycle conducted in gettered nitrogen. Grain elevation and hillock formation at grain boundaries were observed on the Cu surface as a result of the thermal cycling. It was also observed that significant sliding occurs at the Cu/Ta interface with 1 μm wide Cu lines. Less or no sliding was observed at the interface with 10 μm wide Cu lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the lower dielectric constant than the currently used SiO dielectric, several polyimides are being considered for use in multi-layer high density interconnects. However, the mismatch in out-of-plane coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the Cu conductor and most spin-coated polyimides may cause interfacial failures. A scanning probe microscope was used to estimate the out-of-plane CTE for several 1 μm thick, spin-coated polyimides and to observe thermally induced deformation of Cu-polyimide test structures on Si. The change in relative height of arrays of parallel Cu and polyimide lines of various aspect ratios were imaged in air at room temperature and 97°C. Linear elastic, generalized plane strain finite element models for different out-of-plane CTEs were used to estimate the CTE from the profile changes. Forty-one patients were studied at set times after allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation (alloBSCT) for recovery of lymphocyte numbers and function. Cells were mobilized with G-CSF from HLA-matched related donors and cryopreserved. Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis consisted of cyclosporine and methotrexate; G-CSF was administered post-transplant. Median time to absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) 500/μl was 17 days vs 41 and 49 days in historical alloBMT patients with G-CSF (n = 23) or no cytokine (n = 29) post-transplant, respectively (P < 0.0001). CD4/CD8+ ratio was 1.9 on day 28 after alloBSCT, then gradually declined to 0.8 at 1 year due to more rapid CD8+ cell recovery. Mean phytohemagglutinin-induced T cell responses were lower than normal on day +28 (P < 0.05), then tended to recover towards normal values. Natural-killer cytotoxicity remained low from day +28 to 1 year post-alloBSCT, but considerable lymphokine-activated killer cytotoxicity was induced from cells already obtained on day +28. Faster lymphocyte recovery correlated with better survival in alloBSCT patients (median follow-up 287 days, P = 0.002), ALC recovery was not affected by acute GVHD, CMV infections or doses of infused cells. ALC recovery did not correlate with survival in either historical alloBMT group. These data suggest that after alloBSCT lymphocyte reconstitution is faster than after alloBMT, and that quicker lymphocyte recovery predicts better survival in the alloBSCT setting. A model to estimate the reduction of effective crack tip Mode III stress intensity factors by frictional and asperity interaction of an idealized fracture surface is described. An extension of the model is used to calculate the Mode I stress intensity factors due to the crack tip opening displacement induced by the mismatch of the fracture surface asperities. The results of calculations based on a 'reasonable' fracture surface profile are used to analyze experimental studies designed to determine the relative significance of hydrogen embrittlement and crack tip dissolution in stress corrosion crack growth in Al alloys by comparison of Mode I and Mode III stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance. It is concluded that a pure Mode III stress state is not possible for cracks with microscopically rough surfaces and that the magnitude of the induced Mode I stress intensity factor is sufficient to cause stress corrosion crack growth. Electro-optic holographic interferometry was used to measure the thermally induced out-of-plane displacement field around both sides of a plated hole on a single layer, FR-4 laminate. The unique features of the electro-optic holographic interferometry technique are described as well as a method for estimating the stress in the barrel from the deflections of the pad. The pad deflections were observed to be roughly axisymmetric and were nearly the same on the front and back of the laminate. The stress was observed to increase at a more rapid rate for temperatures above the glass temperature than below and is of sufficient magnitude to cause plastic deformation in the barrel although none was observed. Assuming bundles (of shortrange ordered macromolecules, folding back and forth statistically), their equilibrium superstructure and diameter are described on the basis of cluster-entropy-hypothesis (CEH). As primary blocks in the bulk polymer and in thin films coupled meander cubes are most probable, which are linked via their cube diagonals serving as axis of statistical rotation and aggregate to coarse grains. Magnetic birefringence, SANS and elctronmicroscopy are used as further methods to determine the cube side length. Applying the same concept to myosin-, collagen-, and elastin-aggregates, these can be interpreted as equilibrium meander fibrils, additionally stabilized by specific interactions and by the length of the molecules. In severe cases of acne conglobata the use of substances which considerably reduce the sebum excretion rate, such as 13-cis-retinoic acid, is reasonable. To monitor the effect of such preparation a noninvasive and accurate method for measuring skin surface lipids (SSLs) is required. A new modified photometric quantification of SSLs sampled using the cigarette paper method based on reaction with phosphovanilic reagent was introduced. Our overall results indicate that a 3-h SSLs assessment measured photometrically is as accurate as the gravimetric technique; it is reproducible in situations with low and high levels of SSLs.
