This paper offers an analysis of data from the second phase of a project entitled Understanding and Addressing Everyday Sexisms in Australian Universities, which involved interviewing key stakeholders with an understanding of and/or experiences of 'Everyday Sexisms' within the academy. The paper demonstrates how women understand themselves as inherently unwelcome within higher education in Australia, and illustrates how this manifests through experiences, complaints procedures and seemingly banal everyday gendered and racilaised interactions. The authors show how complaints procedures often operate to further harass women who have experienced sexist harassment at work. The paper concludes by considering how the shared experiences of minoritised people within universities can pave the way for new ways of understanding diversity and working together to co-create a more equitable Higher Education. The force-matching task integrates haptic technology and electrical engineering to determine an individual's level of sensory attenuation to somatic stimuli. The task requires a detailed methodology to facilitate reliable and replicable estimates, and there has been a distinct lack of re-evaluation of the methodological processes related to this paradigm. In this task, participants are asked to match a force delivered to their finger, either by pressing directly on their own finger with their other hand (known as the direct condition) or by controlling the device using an external potentiometer to control the force indirectly through a torque motor (known as the slider condition). We analysed 138 participants to determine 1) the optimal number of replications (2, 4, 6, or 8 replications) of the target force, 2) the optimal time window (1–1.5 s, 1.5–2 s, 2–2.5 s and 2.5–3 s) to extract the estimate of sensory attenuation, 3) if participants' performance during the task improved, worsened or was stable across the experimental period regardless of condition, and 4) if learning effects were related to psychological traits. Results showed that the number of replications of the target forces may be reduced from 8 without compromising the estimate of sensory attenuation, the optimal time window for the extraction of the matched force is 2.5–3 s, the performance is stable over the duration of the experiment and not impacted by the measured psychological traits. In conclusion, we present a number of methodological considerations which improve the efficiency and reliability of the force-matching task. Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) is extensively implicated as a risk factor preceding the development of Obsessive–Compulsive Personality Traits (OCPT). Nevertheless, the majority of individuals with a history of CAN do not go on to develop OCPT. To date, little research has investigated potential model networks that may help contribute to explaining why CAN sometimes leads to OCPT and not at other times. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether attachment-anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and metacognition have indirect effects in the association between CAN and OCPT in various network models. Undergraduate psychology students (N = 291) participated in an anonymous 30-min online survey consisting of a series of self-report questionnaires regarding child abuse and neglect, attachment, intolerance of uncertainty, metacognition, OCPT, and depression. Bootstrapped serial mediation revealed attachment-anxiety and intolerance of uncertainty had a serial-mediation effect in the association between CAN and OCPT. Serial mediation was not found for metacognition and attachment-anxiety. However, metacognition alone mediated between child emotional abuse and OCPT. These findings expand our currently limited knowledge regarding the etiology of OCPT and suggest that attachment-anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, and metacognition may be important contributors for understanding the development of OCPT following CAN exposure. Introduction: Resistant hypertension (RHT) is a phenotype of hypertension that is challenging to manage by medications alone. While high grade evidence supports physical activity (PA) and exercise to reduce blood pressure (BP) in hypertension, it is unclear whether these are also effective for RHT. Aims: To determine the quality of evidence for the effectiveness of PA and exercise and the change of magnitude of 24-hour ambulatory BP (24hABP) in adults with RHT. Methods: Scopus, MEDLINE, CINHAL, Web of Science, Embase and SPORTDiscus databases were searched. Cochrane risk of bias tools, Review Manager and Grading of the Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation were used to assess the methodological quality, the clinical heterogeneity and quality of the evidence. Results: Four studies comprising 178 individuals in total were included. A meta-analysis with random effects showed decreased 24hABP. The experimental group demonstrated grater mean differences for 24hABP following the PA and exercise programmes (systolic − 9.88 mmHg, 95% CI: − 17.62, − 2.14, I2 = 72%, p = 0.01; diastolic − 6.24 mmHg, 95% CI: − 12.65, 0.17, I2 = 93%,p = 0.06); and aerobic exercise (systolic − 12.06 mmHg, 95% CI: − 21.14, − 2.96, I2 = 77%, p = 0.009, diastolic − 8.19 mmHg, 95% CI: − 14.83, − 1.55, I2 = 92% ,p = 0.02). In the included studies, indirectness and publication bias were 'moderate' while inconsistency and imprecision were rated as 'low'. Thus, the overall quality of the evidence was considered to be 'low'. Conclusions: Low certainty evidence suggests that PA and aerobic exercise added to usual care may be more effective in 24hABP reduction in RHT than usual care alone. The current report presents the case of "Tisha," an 18-year-old African American young woman with severe obesity and cardiomyopathy. While the emotional distress associated with chronic health conditions can lead youth to engage in maladaptive behaviors as well as impede adherence to medical recommendations, psychological interventions have shown promise in improvement of both negative affect and adherence. Tisha reported engaging in maladaptive overeating patterns in response to emotional distress associated with her medical conditions. Upon participating in an intervention that applied dialectical behavior therapy skills to address binge-eating behaviors, Tisha reported that radical acceptance was a particularly useful skill that taught her the importance of acknowledging and accepting the reality of her health condition and thereby reducing engagement in binge-eating behaviors. Post-intervention behavioral ratings also demonstrated clinically significant improvement in depressive problems. The results of this case report highlight the need for simultaneous treatment of physical and psychological symptoms and underscore the importance of early intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines a project that developed humorous, irreverent and subversive arts-based interventions into sexism in the academy. Two workshops were run with women currently working in teacher education in Australian universities. The researchers worked with the participants collaboratively and in line with feminist practices and methodologies to develop interventions that were performed at a large multidisciplinary educational research conference. The paper outlines the origins of the project, the feminist scholarship that inspired it, the methodological framework as well as a discussion about three of the interventions and demonstrates that sexism both (re)produces structural disadvantage for women in higher education as well as being characterised by a set of micro practices that shape the everyday experiences of women in the academy. Native landscaping has been proposed as a means of increasing native bird diversity and abundance in urban landscapes. However residents' preferences for vegetation are such that exotic plants are often preferred over natives. We investigated the extent to which native birds foraged in three common native and three exotic tree species in mixed urban woodland during four seasons. We predicted that native birds would spend more time foraging in native trees, and that food resources provided by deciduous exotic trees would be more seasonal than those provided by non-deciduous natives. Native birds spent a lot of time foraging in two of the native tree species, but very little time in native red beech ( Nothofagus fusca). They used exotic oak ( Quercus robur) throughout the year, and sycamore ( Acer pseudoplatanus) seasonally. Oak and European beech ( Fagus sylvatica) were used by the largest number of species overall, because they attracted both native and exotic birds. With the exception of tree fuchsia ( Fuschia excorticata), which produces large volumes of nectar followed by fruits, all tree species were sources of invertebrates for insectivorous feeding. Seasonality of use was high only in sycamore, indicating limited support for our second prediction. We show that being native doesn't necessarily entail being a good food source for native birds, and popular landscaping exotic species, such as oak, provide foraging opportunities across all seasons. Chronic intermittent hypoxia (IH) provokes a centrally mediated increase in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA). Although this sympathetic hyperexcitation has been linked to systemic hypertension, its effect on the pulmonary vasculature is unclear. This study aimed to assess IH-mediated sympathetic excitation in modulating pulmonary vasculature tone, particularly acute hypoxia vasoconstrictor response (HPV), and the central β-adrenergic signaling pathway for facilitating the increase in SNA. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to IH (cycle of 4 % O for 90 s/air for 90 s) for 8 h/day for 6 weeks. Subsequently, rats were anesthetized and either pulmonary SNA was recorded (electrophysiology), or the pulmonary vasculature was visualized using microangiography. Pulmonary sympathetic and vascular responses to acute hypoxia were assessed before and after central β-adrenergic receptor blockade (Metoprolol, 200 nmol i.c.v.). Chronic IH increased baseline SNA (110 % increase), and exacerbated the sympathetic response to acute hypoxia. Moreover, the magnitude of HPV in IH rats was blunted compared to control rats (e.g., 10 and 20 % vasoconstriction, respectively). In only the IH rats, β-receptor blockade with metoprolol attenuated the hypoxia-induced increase in pSNA and exacerbated the magnitude of acute HPV, so that both sympathetic and HPV responses were similar to that of control rats. Interestingly, the expression of β-receptors within the brainstem was similar between both control and IH rats. These results suggest that the centrally mediated increase in SNA following IH acts to blunt the local vasoconstrictor effect of acute hypoxia, which reflects an inherent difference between vasodilator and vasoconstrictor actions of SNA in pulmonary and systemic circulations. Despite advances in our understanding concerning the pathology of hypertension, the mechanisms that underpin the origin of hypertension remain to be fully elucidated. This enigma is, at least in part, due to inherent limitations of various animal models of hypertension. Here, we show the genetically modified Cyp1a1-Ren2 rat model, in which the onset and severity of angiotensin II-dependent hypertension can be tightly controlled, as an effective model for investigating increased sympathetic drive for the onset of hypertension. Cyp1a1-Ren2 rats were surgically prepared with radiotelemetric transmitters for the continuous measurement of arterial blood pressure (ABP). ABP was recorded in freely moving rats that were fed with either normal rat chow or a diet containing indole-3-carbinol (0.225 % w/ w) for 7 days to induce hypertension. Structural morphology of and endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) protein expression in heart and/or vascular tissue were analyzed. Sympathetic tone was estimated using spectral analysis of heart rate variability. The progressive induction of hypertension over 7 days was matched with a parallel increase in sympathetic tone. By day 7 of hypertension, eNOS expression in the mesenteric artery was elevated. However, the elevated ABP, sympathetic tone, and eNOS had not elicited gross morphological remodeling of the heart or vasculature. Importantly, both the increase in sympathetic tone and overexpression of eNOS within the vasculature were reversed when ABP was returned to normal. We conclude that the Cyp1a1-Ren2 rat provides an effective model for investigating specific adverse and transient changes in central sympathetic modulation of arterial blood pressure during the early onset of angiotensin-dependent hypertension. Studies have documented increased psychoactive medication use rates among children, but little is known about what child and/or family characteristics predict medication treatment in community-based care. This study examines the role of parent characteristics in children's medication treatment, while accounting for other potential predictors. Participants included 213 children ages 4-13 with disruptive behavior problems. Medication treatment was assessed by parent report; potential predictors of medication treatment, including child characteristics and parent characteristics (e.g., education level, perceived strain and psychopathology) were assessed at service intake. Over 60 % of children used a psychoactive medication during the 16 month study period (most commonly stimulants). Parent education level and reported strain were significant predictors of children's medication treatment even when accounting for other significant predictors such as child diagnosis, age, race/ethnicity, etc. Results highlight the role that parent characteristics have in accessing community-based medication treatment for children with disruptive behavior problems. Ghrelin has cardioprotective properties and, recently, has been shown to improve endothelial function and reduce endothelin-1 (ET-1)-mediated vasoconstriction in peripheral vascular disease. Recently, we reported that ghrelin attenuates pulmonary hypertension (PH) caused by chronic hypoxia (CH), which we hypothesized in this study may be via suppression of the ET-1 pathway. We also aimed to determine whether ghrelin's ability to prevent alterations of the ET-1 pathway also prevented adverse changes in pulmonary blood flow distribution associated with PH. Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to CH (10% O for 2 weeks) with daily subcutaneous injections of ghrelin (150 μg/kg) or saline. Utilizing synchrotron radiation microangiography, we assessed pulmonary vessel branching structure, which is indicative of blood flow distribution, and dynamic changes in vascular responsiveness to (1) ET-1 (1 nmol/kg), (2) the ET-1 receptor antagonist, BQ-123 (1 mg/kg), and (3) ACh (3.0 μg kg min). CH impaired blood flow distribution throughout the lung. However, this vessel 'rarefaction' was attenuated in ghrelin-treated CH-rats. Moreover, ghrelin (1) reduced the magnitude of endothelial dysfunction, (2) prevented an increase in ET-1-mediated vasoconstriction, and (3) reduced pulmonary vascular remodeling and right ventricular hypertrophy-all adverse consequences associated with CH. These results highlight the beneficial effects of ghrelin for maintaining optimal lung perfusion in the face of a hypoxic insult. Further research is now required to establish whether ghrelin is also an effective therapy for restoring normal pulmonary hemodynamics in patients that already have established PH.
