E-scooter services have multiplied worldwide as a form of urban transport. Their use has grown so quickly that policymakers and researchers still need to understand their interrelation with other transport modes. At present, e-scooter services are primarily seen as a first-and-last-mile solution for public transport. However, we demonstrate that 50 % of e-scooter trips are either substituting it or covering areas with little public transportation infrastructure. To this end, we have developed a novel data-driven methodology that autonomously classifies e-scooter trips according to their relation to public transit. Instead of predefined design criteria, the blind nature of our approach extracts the city's intrinsic parameters from real data. We applied this methodology to Rome (Italy), and our findings reveal that e-scooters provide specific mobility solutions in areas with particular needs. Background: The objective is to analyze and review the clinical, laboratory, and neuroimaging characteristics of rheumatoid meningitis (RM) in six patients with known rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods: We performed a retrospective review of patients diagnosed with RM from August 2012 to June 2023. To identify the cases, we used medical term search engines and the hospital´s radiology case database. Clinical information and laboratory findings were gathered from the medical records. A neuroradiologist with five years of experience reviewed and analyzed the RM to determine the characteristics findings of RM. Results: Six patients with RM are included. Seizures along with headaches were among the clinical signs that were documented. All the patients had high levels of rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptides (ACPA) in the peripheral blood. Biopsy in two cases confirmed typical rheumatoid nodules. Leptomeningeal enhancement was found bilaterally in all cases and was predominantly found in the frontoparietal region. "Mismatch DWI/FLAIR" was found in five patients. Bilateral subdural collections could be found in two patients. Brain PET scan revealed increased metabolism in two cases. Conclusion: Rheumatoid meningitis is a rare complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with challenging clinical diagnosis due to non-specific symptoms. This study highlights the importance of MR in detecting characteristic neuroimaging patterns, including "mismatch DWI/FLAIR", to aid in early diagnosis. Chrysolaena flexuosa (Sims.) H. Rob. is a South American species in the tribe Vernonieae, with potential ornamental value: it has attractive inflorescences, is suitable for pot cultivation, and its cypselae are useful for dried flower arrangements. Apart from studies on the growth dynamics of this species under cultivation, chromosome number, DNA content, ploidy level, size, pollen viability, and the characterization of phenotypic and genetic variability, it is noteworthy that other aspects regarding the floral architecture, reproductive mode, and gametophyte formation of C. flexuosa have not yet been studied. For this reason, our study encompasses a floral morphoanatomical survey and a comprehensive assessment of gametophyte development in the species. As a result of this study, we report new floral morphotypes, confirming that the morphological variability of the species might be greater than speculated. The morphoanatomy of the androecium and gynoecium and the male and female gametophyte developmental characteristics are uniform in all the populations studied despite the different ploidy levels. Chrysolaena flexuosa has five tetrasporangiate stamens of the dicotyledonous type of development; all the populations studied displayed a unilocular inferior ovary with a single anatropous, unitegumented, and tenuinucellar ovule. Given that all the embryo sacs observed were of the Polygonum-type development regardless of the ploidy level, we infer that the populations analyzed are fertile and undergo sexual reproduction. Our results not only contribute further research in the field of breeding systems and propagation of this species, but also promote the successful introduction of C. flexuosa to the plant ornamental market. This study describes the formulation of composite resins with a novel fluorescent monomer, 1,5-naphthalene-bis(allylcarbonate) (1,5NBAC), and the effects of its incorporation on the selected properties of experimental dental resin composites. 1,5NBAC monomer was synthesized via a one-step nucleophilic acyl substitution reaction. The experimental composite resins were formulated by mixing 1,5NBAC, TEGDMA, BisGMA, a photo-initiator system, and inorganic fillers. A composite resin without 1,5NBAC monomer was used as a control. The materials were evaluated based on their flexural strength, elastic modulus, photopolymerization kinetics, double bond conversion, polymerization shrinkage, color alteration, translucency, and fluorescence parameters. MTT assay was used to evaluate cytotoxicity. 1,5NBAC was successfully synthesized in quantitative yield. The results showed that the 1,5NBAC-based composite resin had similar values of flexural strength, elastic modulus, double bond conversion, and polymerization shrinkage than the control (p > 0.05). The high fluorescence quantum yield of 1,5NBAC allows the fluorescent property in the experimental resin at lower concentrations. Finally, this study showed no statistically significant differences in biocompatibility outcomes. Because of the fluorescence property of the 1,5NBAC monomer, it could be potentially useful in the formulation of resin composites to produce esthetic materials with fluorescence similar to that of teeth. Ride-hailing services such as Lyft, Uber, and Cabify operate through smartphone apps and are a popular and growing mobility option in cities around the world. These companies can adjust their fares in real time using dynamic algorithms to balance the needs of drivers and riders, but it is still scarcely known how prices evolve at any given time. This research analyzes ride-hailing fares before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on applications of time series forecasting and machine learning models that may be useful for transport policy purposes. The Lyft Application Programming Interface was used to collect data on Lyft ride supply in Atlanta and Boston over 2 years (2019 and 2020). The Facebook Prophet model was used for long-term prediction to analyze the trends and global evolution of Lyft fares, while the Random Forest model was used for short-term prediction of ride-hailing fares. The results indicate that ride-hailing fares are affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, with values in the year 2020 being lower than those predicted by the models. The effects of fare peaks, uncontrollable events, and the impact of COVID-19 cases are also investigated. Kdm1a is a histone demethylase linked to intellectual disability with essential roles during gastrulation and the terminal differentiation of specialized cell types, including neurons, that remains highly expressed in the adult brain. To explore Kdm1a’s function in adult neurons, we develop inducible and forebrain-restricted Kdm1a knockouts. By applying multi-omic transcriptome, epigenome and chromatin conformation data, combined with super-resolution microscopy, we find that Kdm1a elimination causes the neuronal activation of nonneuronal genes that are silenced by the polycomb repressor complex and interspersed with active genes. Functional assays demonstrate that the N-terminus of Kdm1a contains an intrinsically disordered region that is essential to segregate Kdm1a-repressed genes from the neighboring active chromatin environment. Finally, we show that the segregation of Kdm1a-target genes is weakened in neurons during natural aging, underscoring the role of Kdm1a safeguarding neuronal genome organization and gene silencing throughout life.Kdm1a is a histone demethylase implicated in intellectual disability. Language-appropriate care is critical for equitable, high-quality health care, but educational standards to assure graduate medical trainees are prepared to give such care are lacking. Detailed guidance for graduate medical education is provided by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education through the following: (1) an assessment framework for competencies, subcompetencies, and milestones for trainees and (2) the Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Pathways for assessment of trainees' learning environments. These tools do not include a robust framework to evaluate trainees' abilities to offer language-appropriate care. They also do not address the learning environment's potential to support such care. A multidisciplinary group of linguistic, medical, and educational experts drafted a new subcompetency with milestones and an expanded CLER Pathway to highlight the importance of equitable care for patients who prefer languages other than English. These resources offer residency and fellowship programs tools to guide assessment, curriculum development, and learning-environment improvements related to language-appropriate care. Recognizing that programs have unique needs and resources, we propose a range of initial actions to address language equity. Purpose: MELAS syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by mitochondrial DNA mutations. We previously described that MELAS patients had increased CSF glutamate and decreased CSF glutamine levels and that oral glutamine supplementation restores these values. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) allows the in vivo evaluation of brain metabolism. We aimed to compare 1H-MRS of MELAS patients with controls, the 1H-MRS after glutamine supplementation in the MELAS group, and investigate the association between 1H-MRS and CSF lactate, glutamate, and glutamine levels. Methods: We conducted an observational case–control study and an open-label, single-cohort study with single-voxel MRS (TE 144/35 ms). We assessed the brain metabolism changes in the prefrontal (PFC) and parieto-occipital) cortex (POC) after oral glutamine supplementation in MELAS patients. MR spectra were analyzed with jMRUI software. Results: Nine patients with MELAS syndrome (35.8 ± 3.2 years) and nine sex- and age-matched controls were recruited. Lactate/creatine levels were increased in MELAS patients in both PFC and POC (0.40 ± 0.05 vs. 0, p < 0.001; 0.32 ± 0.03 vs. 0, p < 0.001, respectively). No differences were observed between groups in glutamate and glutamine (Glx/creatine), either in PFC (p = 0.930) or POC (p = 0.310). No differences were observed after glutamine supplementation. A positive correlation was found between CSF lactate and lactate/creatine only in POC (0.85, p = 0.003). Conclusion: No significant metabolite changes were observed in the brains of MELAS patients after glutamine supplementation. While we found a positive correlation between lactate levels in CSF and 1H-MRS in MELAS patients, we could not monitor treatment response over short periods with this tool. Inhibition of enzymes responsible for endocannabinoid hydrolysis represents an invaluable emerging tool for the potential treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) is the enzyme responsible for degrading 2-arachydonoylglycerol (2-AG), the most abundant endocannabinoid in the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we tested the effects of the selective MAGL inhibitor JZL184 on the 3-nitropropinic acid (3-NP)-induced short-term loss of mitochondrial reductive capacity/viability and oxidative damage in rat brain synaptosomal/mitochondrial fractions and cortical slices. In synaptosomes, while 3-NP decreased mitochondrial function and increased lipid peroxidation, JZL184 attenuated both markers. The protective effects evoked by JZL184 on the 3-NP-induced mitochondrial dysfunction were primarily mediated by activation of cannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2R), as evidenced by their inhibition by the selective CB2R inverse agonist JTE907. The cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1R) also participated in this effect in a lesser extent, as evidenced by the CB1R antagonist/inverse agonist AM281. In contrast, activation of CB1R, but not CB2R, was responsible for the protective effects of JZL184 on the 3-NP-iduced lipid peroxidation. Protective effects of JZL184 were confirmed in other toxic models involving excitotoxicity and oxidative damage as internal controls. In cortical slices, JZL184 ameliorated the 3-NP-induced loss of mitochondrial function, the increase in lipid peroxidation, and the inhibition of succinate dehydrogenase (mitochondrial complex II) activity, and these effects were independent on CB1R and CB2R, as evidenced by the lack of effects of AM281 and JTE907, respectively. Our novel results provide experimental evidence that the differential protective effects exerted by JZL184 on the early toxic effects induced by 3-NP in brain synaptosomes and cortical slices involve MAGL inhibition, and possibly the subsequent accumulation of 2-AG. Although exercise guidelines now recommend exercise for patients with MCI, the long-term effects of exercise in patients with MCI has not been reviewed systematically. The aim was to assess (1) the effectiveness of exercise and physical activity (EXPA) interventions in improving long-term patient-relevant cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes in people with mild cognitive impairment, (2) how well the included trials reported details of the intervention, and (3) the extent to which reported endpoints were in line with patient preferences that were assessed in patient workshops. Following PRISMA guidelines, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis including randomized controlled trials. A total of ten studies were included after searching in six electronic sources from 1995 onwards. There is a trend that 6 + -month EXPA interventions improve global cognition 12 months after initiation. Evidence on long-term effects of EXPA interventions on non-cognitive health outcomes could not be meaningfully pooled and the individual studies reported mixed results. Workshop participants considered freedom from pain and stress, mood, motivation and self-efficacy to be important, but these outcomes were rarely addressed. Too little information is available on intervention details for EXPA programs to be replicated and confidently recommended for patients with MCI. In this paper, we present three estimators of the ROC curve when missing observations arise among the biomarkers. Two of the procedures assume that we have covariates that allow to estimate the propensity and and from this information, the estimators are obtained using an inverse probability weighting method or a smoothed version of it. The third one assumes that the covariates are related to the biomarkers through a regression model which enables us to construct convolution–based estimators of the distribution and quantile functions. Consistency results are obtained under mild conditions. Through a numerical study we evaluate the finite sample performance of the different proposals. A real data set is also analysed. Rationale: The administration of NMDA receptor (NMDAR) antagonists constitutes a widely used model that produce both positive (e.g., hyperactivity) and negative (e.g., social withdrawal) symptoms relevant for schizophrenia in rodents. These effects can be reversed with the administration of atypical (second and third generation) antipsychotics. Objectives: In this study we combined the NMDAR-antagonist model with the Roman High-Avoidance (RHA) strain, a psychogenetically selected model of schizophrenia-relevant features. We also studied whether some atypical antipsychotic drugs (clozapine, ziprasidone, and aripiprazole) would be able to attenuate or reverse the behavioural alterations induced by MK801 and whether such effects might be dependent on the rat strain. Methods: MK801 dose–response study was conducted in RHA and Roman Low-Avoidance (RLA) male rats. After that, the 0.15 mg/kg MK801 dose was selected to carry out pharmacological studies versus atypical antipsychotics. Results: In the first experiment we establish that MK801 (dizocilpine), a NMDAR antagonist, produces dose-related hyperactivity and social withdrawal, which are more marked in RHA than RLA rats. The administration of the atypical antipsychotics clozapine (2.5 mg/kg) or ziprasidone (2.5 mg/kg) partially reversed or attenuated some of the social behaviour deficits and hyperactivity induced by the administration of MK801. Aripiprazole (3 mg/kg), a third-generation antipsychotic, reversed or attenuated the social preference deficit, the hyperactivity and the impairment of social latency induced by MK801. Conclusions: These results seem to be in line with previous studies with the NMDAR-antagonist model and add face (MK801-induced social withdrawal and hyperactivity) and predictive (attenuation of MK801-induced effects by atypical antipsychotics) validity to the RHA rat strain as a model of schizophrenia-relevant features. Salinity is one of main abiotic stresses that causes adverse effects on plant growth and affects millions of hectares around the world. Variability of physical and chemical properties of soils has made field experiments notoriously difficult to evaluate. Plant tissue culture has been used as a model system to study physiological responses induced by salinity. The aim of this work was to evaluate the tolerance to salinity of Handroanthus impetiginosus 'pink lapacho' and the effect of inoculation with plant growth-promoting bacteria previously isolated from adult plants. Shoots induced for 3 days in half-strength Murashige and Skoog medium with 30 μM of indole butyric acid were used and then transferred to auxin-free medium, supplemented with 0, 40, 80 or 160 mM NaCl and inoculated or not with 108 cfu of Bacillus sp. L15 or Sphingobacterium sp. L22. At the end of experiments (40 days), 50% Inhibitory Concentration 50 (IC50) was determined from regression curves constructed with rooting percentages. Bacterization with L15 and L22 strains displaced IC50 to higher NaCl concentrations (147 and 160 mM, respectively) relative to controls (109 mM). Furthermore, inoculation with L22 improved biometric parameters index (BPI) at 40 mM NaCl. Finally, bacterization and NaCl concentration modified proline, phenolics and chlorophylls contents during the first 15 days of culture. Bacteria inoculation also mitigated anatomical alterations produced by salt stress. In conclusion, bacteria tested in this work promoted in vitro rooting and alleviated negative effects from salt stress in H. impetiginosus. Key message: Bacillus sp. L15 or Sphingobacterium sp. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 is the causative agent of Coronavirus Disease 2019 in humans. Among domestic animals, cats are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 than dogs. The detection of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in seemingly healthy cats and/or infected cats which are in close contact with infected humans has been described. The presence of animals that tested positive by serology or molecular techniques could represent a potential transmission pathway of SARS-CoV-2 that can spill over into urban wildlife. This study analyses the seroprevalence variation of SARS-CoV-2 in stray cats from different waves of outbreaks in a geographical area where previous seroepidemiological information of SARS-CoV-2 was available and investigate if SARS-CoV-2-seropositive cats were exposed to other co-infections causing an immunosuppressive status and/or a chronic disease that could lead to a SARS-CoV-2 susceptibility. For this purpose, a total of 254 stray cats from Zaragoza (Spain) were included. This analysis was carried out by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using the receptor binding domain of Spike antigen and confirmed by serum virus neutralization assay. The presence of co-infections including Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania infantum, Dirofilaria immitis, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus type 1, feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus, was evaluated using different serological methods. A seropositivity of 1.57% was observed for SARS-CoV-2 including the presence of neutralizing antibodies in three cats. None of the seropositive to SARS-CoV-2 cats were positive to feline coronavirus, however, four SARS-CoV-2-seropositive cats were also seropositive to other pathogens such as L. infantum, D. immitis and FIV (n = 1), L. infantum and D. immitis (n = 1) and L. infantum alone (n = 1).Considering other pathogens, a seroprevalence of 16.54% was detected for L. infantum, 30.31% for D. immitis, 13.78%, for T. gondii, 83.86% for feline calicivirus, 42.52% for feline herpesvirus type 1, 3.15% for FeLV and 7.87% for FIV. Our findings suggest that the epidemiological role of stray cats in SARS-CoV-2 transmission is scarce, and there is no increase in seropositivity during the different waves of COVID-19 outbreaks in this group of animals. In response to the increased recognition of racism as a public health crisis, we assessed links between racial discrimination and HIV-related risk behavior for Black men. Specifically, using survey data from 530 Black heterosexual men (18–44 years old, M = 31.0, SD = 7.8), we tested two moderated-mediation models: (1) a protective model, in which resilience and social capital protected against the indirect effect of racial discrimination on alcohol-related sexual behavior via binge drinking, and (2) a bounded model, in which racial discrimination limited the indirect effects of resilience and social capital on alcohol-related sexual behavior via binge drinking. We found support for the bounded model only. Specifically, resilience was indirectly associated with decreased alcohol-related sexual behavior via lower binge drinking when racial discrimination was low to moderately high, but not when racial discrimination was at its highest levels. Resilience was not directly associated with alcohol-related sexual behavior. Social capital was directly related to lower odds of alcohol-related sexual behavior. At high levels of racial discrimination, however, social capital was indirectly related to increased alcohol-related sexual behavior via binge drinking. High levels of racial discrimination limit beneficial effects of resilience on alcohol-related sexual behavior. Social capital maintains a beneficial effect if social bonds are not associated with binge-drinking norms or behaviors. Purpose: To evaluate and compare which factors are relevant to the diagnostic decision-making and imaging workup of intracerebral hemorrhages in large, specialized European centers. Methods: Expert neuroradiologists from ten large, specialized centers (where endovascular stroke treatment is routinely performed) in nine European countries were selected in cooperation with the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR). The experts were asked to describe how and when they would investigate specific causes in a patient who presented with an acute, atraumatic, intracerebral hemorrhage for two given locations: (1) basal ganglia, thalamus, pons or cerebellum; (2) lobar hemorrhage. Answers were collected, and decision trees were compared. Results: Criteria that were considered relevant for decision-making reflect recommendations from current guidelines and were similar in all participating centers. CT Angiography or MR angiography was considered essential by the majority of centers regardless of other factors. Imaging in clinical practice tended to surpass guideline recommendations and was heterogeneous among different centers, e.g., in a scenario suggestive of typical hypertensive hemorrhage, recommendations ranged from no further follow-up imaging to CT angiography and MR angiography. In no case was a consensus above 60% achieved. Conclusion: In European clinical practices, existing guidelines for diagnostic imaging strategies in ICH evaluation are followed as a basis but in most cases, additional imaging investigation is undertaken. Significant differences in imaging workup were observed among the centers. Key message: The developed protocol for organogenesis, in vitro plantlet production, and cryopreservation opens the possibility for mass propagation of hybrid pine (Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis). The low seed production of the interspecific hybrid Pinus elliottii var. elliottii x Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis restricts its commercial expansion, making it necessary to ensure efficient cryopreservation and a propagation protocol with no genetic variability. Mature zygotic embryos (MZEs) were cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 6-benzyladenine (BA) and thidiazuron (TDZ). After 45 days in culture, the highest rate of regeneration (86.7 ± 8.8%) and the maximum number of differentiated buds per responsive explant (15.5 ± 2.8) were achieved from explants cultivated on MS with BA and TDZ (0.5 μM each). Cryopreservation of zygotic embryos using a simple desiccation step and a direct immersion into liquid nitrogen did not affect regeneration and would enhance embryo storage duration. Half-strength MS enriched with sucrose (0.09 M) and gelled with gellan gum (4 g L− 1) under forced ventilation culture was used for shoot elongation. Subsequently, 73 ± 6.7% of shoots produced roots after pretreatment with 1.25 mM indole-3-butyric acid solution for 5 min and culture on quarter-strength MS with sucrose (0.045 M). The regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred to ex vitro conditions. The procedure took 160 days and comprised the adventitious bud formation from cryopreserved MZEs, shoot elongation, rooting, and plantlet acclimation. Considering that water deficit is the major strain during forest establishment, a controlled experiment was carried out to determine the competence of plantlets to overcome this stress. Next, field studies assessed the survival rate and growth of 16-month-old plants. Our results indicated that the field performance of tissue-culture-derived plants is similar to seedlings and rooted cutting plants. Additionally, inter-simple sequence repeat marker analysis revealed the genetic uniformity among the in vitro-raised plants, demonstrating the reliability and validity of the procedure. Thus, the developed regeneration and cryopreservation protocol for mature zygotic embryo explants is a valuable alternative for breeding programs and commercial P. elliottii x P. caribaea propagation. Car-sharing systems have irrupted in our cities following the shared mobility paradigm. They have evolved the personal mobility market from product-based into service-oriented, which ultimately provides a positive impact on the city's sustainability. Car sharing systems are a complex interactive service, whose dynamics can dramatically affect its operational viability. In order to better asses this viability, we must rely on data to produce novel metrics that characterize both the user behavior and the service performance. Up to date, research has focused on modeling the demand on the basis of the number of rentals that start within a specific time slot. However, this approach seems unable to provide a representative metric of the performance of a car-sharing system. In this paper, we propose a novel metric, the utilization rate of the fleet, which considers the precise number of vehicles within a fleet that are in service every minute of the day. From this basic metric, we derive a key performance indicator (KPI) to reflect the viability of any car-sharing system in economic and sustainability terms. Eph receptors and their ligands, Ephrins, are involved in the thymocyte-thymic epithelial cell (TEC) interactions, key for the functional maturation of both thymocytes and thymic epithelium. Several years ago, we reported that the lack of EphA4, a Eph of the subfamily A, coursed with reduced proportions of double positive (DP) thymocytes apparently due to an altered thymic epithelial stroma [Munoz et al. in J Immunol 177:804–813, 2006]. In the present study, we reevaluate the lymphoid, epithelial, and extracellular matrix (ECM) phenotype of EphA4−/− mice grouped into three categories with respect to their proportions of DP thymocytes. Our results demonstrate a profound hypocellularity, specific alterations of T cell differentiation that affected not only DP thymocytes, but also double negative and single positive T cell subsets, as well as the proportions of positively and negatively selected thymocytes. In correlation, thymic histological organization changed markedly, especially in the cortex, as well as the proportions of both Ly51+UEA-1− cortical TECs and Ly51−UEA-1+ medullary TECs. The alterations observed in the expression of ECM components (Fibronectin, Laminin, Collagen IV), integrin receptors (VLA-4, VLA-6), chemokines (CXCL12, CCL25, CCL21) and their receptors (CXCR4, CCR7, CCR9) and in vitro transwell assays on the capacity of migration of WT and mutant thymocytes suggest that the lack of EphA4 alters T-cell differentiation by presumably affecting cell adhesion between TECs and T-TEC interactions rather than by thymocyte migration. Urban sustainability challenges are complex, impacting a wide range of stakeholders. It is commonly accepted that sustainable solutions must integrate scientific knowledge from a variety of disciplines, coupled with community stakeholder ideas, norms, and practices in ways that link knowledge to decision-making and action. Jointly researching problems and co-designing solutions, known as co-production, requires working together in teams. Interestingly, the intersection of co-production and team science has been understudied. We address this gap by asking: Does team formation – specifically, single-, multi- or trans-disciplinary teams – impact the process and perceived efficacy of sustainability solutions? Using case study data collected at the 5th Symposium for Urbanization and Stream Ecology (SUSE5), held in February 2020, we explore the impact of bringing different types of teams together to generate solutions to real-world "wicked problems" surrounding urban streams in Austin, Texas. We found that the solutions generated by trans-disciplinary teams – i.e., teams that include multiple disciplines and community members – were on average rated higher by their peers than solutions from single- or multi-disciplinary teams. However, our findings suggest that some transdisciplinary teams found it difficult to get through the different stages of problem definition to solution design. The findings from this limited but novel and unique case study make two important contributions to the literature. First, co-production leads to more agreeable solutions to urban sustainability challenges. Second, co-production team dynamics are likely to be more complicated and variable than disciplinary or multidisciplinary teams. A better understanding of these opportunities and challenges can inform institutions and agencies employing a community-engaged process to solve urban sustainability challenges. This work reports green synthesis of 1D and 0D Ag nanostructures using water as solvent and novel oligomeric polyelectrolytes-denominated oligoAMPS, oligo(AMPS-co-2VP), and oligo(AMPS-co-4VP) without external reducing agent. The oligomeric polyelectrolytes were obtained from 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), 2-vinylpyridine (2VP), and 4-vinylpyridine (4VP), and they were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR, and TGA. Colloidal synthesis of 0D and 1D silver nanostructures was performed in water using oligoAMPS, oligo(AMPS-co-2VP), or oligo(AMPS-co-4VP) as reducing and stabilizing agents. Results indicated that oligomeric polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution act as reducing agents for Ag+ ions and at the same time acting as stabilizers, forming colloidal solutions that remain stable during several months. 1D nanostructures are nanowires, and they were obtained using oligoAMPS while quasi-spherical nanoparticles (0D) were obtained using oligo(AMPS-co-2VP) and oligo(AMPS-co-4VP). Preliminary assays show Ag nanostructures stabilized with oligoAMPS, oligo(AMPS-co-2VP), and oligo(AMPS-co-4VP) have an antimicrobial effect against S. aureus and C. albicans. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous works that have analysed the efficiency of the management of professional football clubs have not paid much attention to the interaction between the sporting, social and economic dimensions of their activity. To bridge this research gap, a DEA model is developed and applied to determine the relative efficiency of clubs participating in one of the main football leagues while taking into account their multiplicity of objectives. The proposed two-stage relational network DEA model assumes that the financial resources of the clubs are distributed between social and sporting dimensions, contributing to generate results in both areas that, in the second stage, determine the business performance of the clubs. As the actual distributions of the primary inputs are unknown, two complementary approaches are used. First, the model is solved by assuming a parameterization of the distribution. Then, a simulation model is used to study the effect of the different distributions on the efficiency by means of contour charts. A final cluster analysis completes the study. The sample consists of the 20 clubs that played in Spain's First Division in the 2016–17 season. The evidence shows that the efficiency of the clubs increases when a higher proportion of the primary inputs is allocated to the social dimension. In addition, the clubs are more efficient in converting their sporting and social results into income, than when turning their economic resources into sporting successes and social support. As a result, the model makes it possible to extend efficiency analysis to professional sports organisations which have multiple objectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecological status classification systems based on biological elements (e.g., macroinvertebrate communities) are dependent on their response to different pressures. However, there is a need to determine if invasive species should be incorporated to indicator parameters (i.e. metrics based on measurements of richness and diversity) or as a pressure affecting such parameters. Moreover, because ecosystem classification systems are lacking for northwestern Iberian estuaries, there is even the possibility to develop a new metric penalizing presence or abundance of invasive species. To increase our understanding on this topic, we analyze the taxonomic and functional responses of benthic macroinvertebrates to Corbicula invasion along the environmental gradient of 12 northwestern Iberian estuaries. Macroinvertebrate assemblages were described and compared between invaded and uninvaded sections. Additionally, to assess differences in community structure, macroinvertebrate assemblages’ similarity was examined between two distinct estuarine sections (freshwater and oligohaline vs transitional water and mesohaline) and among water body types, including and excluding Corbicula from the analysis. The salinity gradient was the main driver explaining changes in macroinvertebrate assemblages and in functional group distribution. Freshwater and transitional water sections clearly differed in macroinvertebrate assemblages and functional groups composition. In addition, differences among river types in macroinvertebrate composition were found. Corbicula inclusion or exclusion from multivariate community analysis significantly affected the results in functional feeding group composition in the Cantabric-Atlantic siliceous river axis type. Nevertheless, considering Corbicula as a pressure at the regional scale did not provide different results in diversity indices calculation. Hence, we argue that because Corbicula eradication is virtually impossible, it should be included as an additional metric evidencing its presence as a negative indication, or be included within other indicator metrics used in the assessment of the ecological status, for instance in invertebrate abundance metrics were its dominance should be indicative of invasion impairment. Background: Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a genetically heterogeneous disorder caused by mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in the MT-TL1 gene. The pathophysiology of neurological manifestations is still unclear, but neuronal hyperexcitability and neuron–astrocyte uncoupling have been suggested. Glutamatergic neurotransmission is linked to glucose oxidation and mitochondrial metabolism in astrocytes and neurons. Given the relevance of neuron–astrocyte metabolic coupling and astrocyte function regulating energetic metabolism, we aimed to assess glutamate and glutamine CSF levels in MELAS patients. Methods: This prospective observational case–control study determined glutamate and glutamine CSF levels in patients with MELAS syndrome and compared them with controls. The plasma and CSF levels of the remaining amino acids and lactate were also determined. Results: Nine adult patients with MELAS syndrome (66.7% females mean age 35.8 ± 3.2 years) and 19 controls (63.2% females mean age 42.7 ± 3.8 years) were included. The CSF glutamate levels were significantly higher in patients with MELAS than in controls (18.48 ± 1.34 vs. 5.31 ± 1.09 μmol/L, p < 0.001). Significantly lower glutamine concentrations in patients with MELAS than controls were shown in CSF (336.31 ± 12.92 vs. 407.06 ± 15.74 μmol/L, p = 0.017). Moreover, the CSF levels of alanine, the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and lactate were significantly higher in patients with MELAS. Conclusions: Our results suggest the glutamate–glutamine cycle is altered probably due to metabolic imbalance, and as a result, the lactate–alanine and BCAA–glutamate cycles are upregulated. This work reports the chemical modification of chitosan with phthalimide moieties and the synthesis of two bisphthalimides (BPIs) with low molecular weight useful in the green synthesis of Au nanoparticles. The polyampholyte derivative of chitosan was obtained in water while the two BPIs, N,N´-(1,3-phenylene)bis(phthalimide-5-carboxylic acid) (BPI-1) and N,N´-(1,4-phenylene)bis(phthalimide-5-carboxylic acid) (BPI-2) were obtained by solid state reaction without the use of organic solvents. The polyampholyte and two BPIs were soluble in water; therefore, they were used in the green synthesis of Au nanoparticles. The characterization of three compounds was made by FTIR and 1H NMR. TEM and UV–Vis results revealed that the compounds can reduce gold ions and stabilize Au nanoparticles in the colloidal solutions. The shape of the Au nanoparticles was quasi-spherical, while the average size of Au nanoparticles stabilized with the compounds BPI-1 and BPI-2 was 3 and 12 nm, respectively. Thus, with BPI-1 was obtained Au nanoparticles with lower size than BPI-2. Finally, the average size of nanoparticles stabilized with the polyampholyte was 10 nm. However, the faster reaction to obtain nanoparticles was with the polyampholyte derivative of chitosan (5 min), due to high quantity of oxidizable groups found in the polymer structure by its high molecular weight. In this work, hexa-substituted cyclotriphosphazenes bearing 1,3,4-oxadiazole groups as fluorophores were employed in the formation of thin films. The cyclotriphosphazenes compounds as well as the films exhibited photoluminescence with emission in the UV-blue region. Fluorescence quantum yields of cyclotriphosphazenes range between 0.04 and 0.10. The bandgap of cyclotriphosphazenes was 4 eV showing properties of wide bandgap semiconductors. The morphological characterization of the films by SEM and AFM showed homogeneous surfaces without defects. The optical properties of cyclotriphosphazenes are different when they are in solution and thin films because of favorable binding supramolecular interactions. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is composed of endogenous cannabinoids; components involved in their synthesis, transport, and degradation; and an expansive variety of cannabinoid receptors. Hypofunction or deregulation of the ECS is related to pathological conditions. Consequently, endogenous enhancement of endocannabinoid levels and/or regulation of their metabolism represent promising therapeutic approaches. Several major strategies have been suggested for the modulation of the ECS: (1) blocking endocannabinoids degradation, (2) inhibition of endocannabinoid cellular uptake, and (3) pharmacological modulation of cannabinoid receptors as potential therapeutic targets. Here, we focused in this review on degradation/reuptake inhibitors over cannabinoid receptor modulators in order to provide an updated synopsis of contemporary evidence advancing mechanisms of endocannabinoids as pharmacological tools with therapeutic properties for the treatment of several disorders. For this purpose, we revisited the available literature and reported the latest advances regarding the biomedical properties of fatty acid amide hydrolase and monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitors in pre-clinical and clinical studies. We also highlighted anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol reuptake inhibitors with promising results in pre-clinical studies using in vitro and animal models as an outlook for future research in clinical trials. Key Message: Anatomical evidences suggest that differences in rooting ability among Acca sellowiana materials are explained by earlier phase change in difficult to root genotypes. Successful development of adventitious roots (AR) in cuttings imposes an important limitation to the propagation of woody plants and in some species, the ability to form AR is strongly affected by genotype. However, we lack an understanding of the differences among genotypes underlying such different responses in various species. We examined the anatomical and biochemical effects of exogenous indol-3-butyric acid and type of cutting in rooting experiments of two Acca sellowiana genotypes with contrasting rooting ability. New meristems developed outside the cambial ring, without callus formation by day fourteen and new adventitious roots grew through the cortex emerging by day 28. Both anatomically in vivo and biochemically in vitro, cuttings from the different genotypes behaved differently. We found anatomical differences between the genotypes that might explain the differences in rooting ability. An earlier development of a periderm was present in the difficult-to-root genotype. This secondary dermal tissue could be used as a reliable phase-change marker to distinguish juvenile from mature plant parts which have lost rooting capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although banned in multiple areas, due to its persistence in the environment, endosulfan constitutes a significant environmental concern. In this work, fourth instar Chironomus riparius larvae were exposed at environmentally relevant endosulfan concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 10 μg/L for 24 h to analyze the possible effects of this acaricide on gene expression and enzymatic activity. Transcriptional changes were studied through the implementation of a real-time polymerase chain reaction array with 42 genes related to several metabolic pathways (endocrine system, detoxification response, stress response, DNA reparation, and immune system). Moreover, glutathione-S-transferase (GST), phenoloxidase (PO), and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities were assessed. The five pathways were differentially altered by endosulfan exposure with significant changes in the E93, Dis, MAPR, Met, InR, GSTd3, GSTt3, MRP1, hsp70, hsp40, hsp24, ATM, PARP, Proph, and Def genes. Besides, all of the measured enzymatic activities were modified, with increased activity of GST, followed by PO and AChE. In summary, the results reflected the effects provoked in C. riparius at molecular level despite the absence of lethality. These data raise concerns about the strong alteration on different metabolic routes despite the low concentrations used. Therefore, new risk assessment strategies should consider include the effects at the sub-organismal level as endpoints in addition to the classical ecologically relevant parameters (such as survival). Goodness-of-fit tests for quantile regression models, in the presence of missing observations in the response variable, are introduced and analysed in this paper. The different proposals are based on the construction of empirical processes considering three different approaches which involve the use of the gradient vector of the quantile function, a linear projection of the covariates (suitable for high-dimensional settings) and a projection of the estimating equations. Besides, two types of estimators for the null parametric model to be tested are considered. The performance of the different test statistics is analysed in an extensive simulation study. The rather limited human ability to understand animal vision and visual signalling has frequently clouded our expectations concerning the visual abilities of other animals. But there are multiple reasons to suspect that visual signalling is more widely employed by animals than previously thought. Because visibility of visual marks depends on the background in which they are seen, species spending most of their time living in dark conditions (e.g., in forests and/or having crepuscular and nocturnal habits) may rely on bright signals to enhance visual display. Here, as a result of experimental manipulations, we present, for the first time ever, evidence supporting the use of a new channel of intraspecific communication by a mammal species, i.e., brown bear Ursus arctos adult males relying on visual marks during mating. Bear reactions to our manipulation suggest that visual signalling could represent a widely overlooked mechanism in mammal communication, which may be more broadly employed than was previously thought. Endocannabinoid-based therapies constitute an emerging tool for the potential treatment of neurodegenerative disorders, requiring characterization at the experimental level. The effects of URB597, an inhibitor of the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), were tested against the quinolinic acid (QUIN)-induced early toxic effects in rat cortical slices, and compared with those effects exerted by the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA). URB597 prevented the QUIN-induced loss of mitochondrial function/cell viability and lipid peroxidation, while reduced necrosis, and to a lesser extent, apoptosis. The protective effects of URB597 were mediated by activation of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1r), as evidenced by their inhibition by the selective CB1r antagonist AM281. Similar effects were observed when testing AEA against QUIN toxicity. Our findings demonstrate the neuroprotective properties of URB597 during the early stages of excitotoxic damage to cortical tissue, suggesting that these properties are mediated by FAAH inhibition, and might be linked to the protective effects of AEA, or the combination of endocannabinoids. The proximity to the Tacaná volcano, to the subduction zone between the Cocos and North America plates, to the Mexican coast, and to the active geologic Polochic-Motagua fault makes the population of Union Juarez (UJ), Chiapas, Mexico, exposed to many natural hazards including hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. We assessed the risk perception of UJ, and our findings indicate that the community has moderate level of risk perception according to the scale of the National Center for Disaster Prevention of Mexico. The UJ's risk perception is mainly dependent on gender and religion because females unlike males in case of disasters and emergencies: (1) believe that it is necessary to improve their preparedness; (2) trust the local civil protection authorities; (3) would know how to respond; (4) would follow the established protocols; and (5) would not relocate. On the other hand, non-religious people know better the protocols to follow in the event of disasters than the religious population. Besides, the community of UJ reasonably perceives earthquakes and extreme rains as the main hazards that they are exposed to, while volcanic hazards are considered less important although the town is located very close to the Tacaná volcano that has been active during the last 30 years. The local population lacks of proper knowledge and resources to develop adequate disaster mitigation plans. Surprisingly, the work of the local civil protection is considered poor. It is exciting to watch intersectionality travel from its roots in Black feminist activism and critical legal studies to increasingly more mainstream research domains such as psychology and psychopathology. We commend Mennies et al. (Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2020) for their application of the intersectionality framework to the study of psychopathology and treatment utilization in youth in the ABCD study. We argue, however, that this application falls short of its intersectional promise. We discuss some conceptual and methodological/analytical issues that evidence the focal article’s lack of alignment with intersectionality’s core tenets, particularly regarding the central role of power and social-structural factors as drivers of inequities across intersectional positions. Specifically, we discuss our concerns with the testing and flattening of intersectionality, the selection and operationalization of intersectional positions, and the use of conventional regression models as quantitative analytical approach. We end by suggesting ways that intersectionality can help reduce the inequities in psychopathology and treatment utilization identified by Mennies et al. (Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, 2020). Demographic aging has led to an increase in the prevalence of different diseases, including the so-called geriatric syndromes (GS), like depression, disability and frailty phenotype (FP). Spirituality and religious practices (RP) have been associated with positive health outcomes and could be a protective factor against the development of some GS. Study aims was to determine the frequency of spirituality and RP, and their associations between some GS in adults 60 years of age or older, who attended a geriatric clinic in a university hospital in Mexico. Cross-sectional study in adults aged ≥ 60 years, recruited in 2018, was performed. Participants underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment, with which spirituality and religious practices model and the diagnosis of GS were obtained. Linear regression analyses were determined to establish the association between RP and GS. We included 128 subjects; mean age was 79 years (SD ± 8). Lowers scores for mass and communion assiduity were associated with worst disability and FP scores (b = − 0.35, P = 0.02; b = − 0.37, P = 0.03). The RP model explained 8% (R2 = 0.083) of the total variance of the depressive symptoms score (P = 0.03). This study showed that the prevalence of RP is higher in Mexican older adults. The RP model can explain 8 and 9% of the variation in dependent variables (depressive symptoms and disability). These results suggest the importance of monitoring RP, as they seem to have a positive impact on health status of the elderly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poor solubility is the main drawback of the direct industrial exploitation of chitin, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose. Chemical methods are conventional to solubilize chitin from natural sources. Enzymatic hydrolysis of soluble chitinous substrates is a promising approach to obtain value-added by-products, such as N-acetylglucosamine units or low molecular weight chito-oligomers. Protein display on the bacterial membrane remains attractive to produce active enzymes anchored to a biological surface. The Lpp-OmpA system, a gene fusion of the Lpp signal sequence with the OmpA transmembrane region, represents the traditional system for targeting enzymes to the E. coli surface. EhCHT1, the amoebic chitinase, exhibits an efficient endochitinolytic activity and significant biochemical features, such as stability over a wide range of pH values. Using an extended Lpp-OmpA system as a protein carrier, we engineered E. coli to express the catalytic domain of EhCHT1 on the surface and assess the endochitinase activity as a trait. Engineered bacteria showed a consistent hydrolytic rate over a typical substrate, suggesting that the displayed enzyme has operational stability. This study supports the potential of biomembrane-associated biocatalysts as a reliable technology for the hydrolysis of soluble chitinous substrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neuroprotective approaches comprising different mechanisms to counteract the noxious effects of excitotoxicity and oxidative stress need validation and detailed characterization. Although S-allylcysteine (SAC) is a natural compound exhibiting a broad spectrum of protective effects characterized by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuromodulatory actions, the mechanisms underlying its protective role on neuronal cell damage triggered by early excitotoxic insults remain elusive. In this study, we evaluated if the preconditioning or the post-treatment of isolated rat cortical slices with SAC (100 μM) can ameliorate the toxic effects induced by the excitotoxic metabolite quinolinic acid (QUIN, 100 μM), and whether this protective response involves the early display of specific antioxidant and neuroprotective signals. For this purpose, cell viability/mitochondrial reductive capacity, lipid peroxidation, levels of reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG, respectively), the rate of cell damage, the NF-E2-related factor 2/antioxidant response element (Nrf2/ARE) binding activity, heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) regulation, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) phosphorylation, and the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were all estimated in tissue slices exposed to SAC and/or QUIN. The incubation of slices with QUIN augmented all toxic endpoints, whereas the addition of SAC prevented and/or recovered all toxic effects of QUIN, exhibiting better results when administered 60 min before the toxin and demonstrating protective and antioxidant properties. The early stimulation of Nrf2/ARE binding activity, the upregulation of HO-1, the ERK1/2 phosphorylation and the preservation of BDNF tissue levels by SAC demonstrate that this molecule displays a wide range of early protective signals by triggering orchestrated antioxidant responses and neuroprotective strategies. The relevance of the characterization of these mechanisms lies in the confirmation that the protective potential exerted by SAC begins at the early stages of excitotoxicity and neurodegeneration and supports the design of integral prophylactic/therapeutic strategies to reduce the deleterious effects observed in neurodegenerative disorders with inherent excitotoxic events. This study aimed to assess how different concentrations of the insecticide chlorpyrifos (1.1, 5.24, 11, 52.4, 110, 262, 524 and 1100 ng L−1) affect the swimming behaviour of Diamesa zernyi larvae following exposure. A video tracking system was employed to analyse two swimming traits (total distance moved and average speed) of the larvae simultaneously after 3 days of exposure to the pesticide at 2 °C. The behavioural results were also interpreted according to biochemical responses to oxidative stress (OS) induced by chlorpyrifos, based on malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PCC) content. Both distance and speed significantly decreased after 72 h of exposure to chlorpyrifos concentrations of ≥ 110 ng L−1, under which significant OS was detected as lipid peroxidation (level of MDA) and protein carbonylation (level of carbonyl). Analysis of altered swimming behaviour, along with MDA and carbonyl content, indicated that ≥ 110 ng L−1 contamination levels of the insecticide cause the organism to reallocate energy normally used for locomotor activity to repair cell damage, which might explain the strong impairment to locomotor performance. Locomotor performance is an ecologically relevant trait for elucidating the population dynamics of key species, with disturbance to this trait having long-term negative impacts on population and community structure. Therefore, chlorpyrifos insecticides represent a serious ecological risk for mountain aquatic species based on the detrimental effects observed in the current study, as the tested concentrations were those at which the insecticide is found in many Alpine rivers of Italy. Thirty isolates of Pseudomonas syringae other than pathovar (pv.) phaseolicola, recovered from beans (18) and weeds (12) in a Northern Spanish region, were studied by a polyphasic approach, including phenotypic tests, detection of levansucrase and toxin (syringomycin and syringopeptin) genes, typing by RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) and PFGE (Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis). The isolates were phenotypically heterogeneous, and both RAPD and PFGE, probed to be highly discriminative, as they were almost able to differentiate at the level of isolate. Phylogenetic analysis based on conserved genes of the core genome (rpoD, gltA and gyrB) distributed the isolates in three different clades (2A, 2B and 2C) belonging to phylogroup 2 of the P. syringae complex. According to toxin production, 18 of them, within clade 2B, were assigned to P. syringae pv. syringae and five of these caused symptoms after experimental inoculation on bean pods. Four of the five pathogenic isolates were obtained from weeds, supporting the role of weeds associated with bean crops, particularly Cyperus rotundus, Malva sylvestris, and Polygonum lapathifolium, as a reservoir of the pathogen. In conclusion, results of this study suggest that apart from P. syringae pv. phaseolicola, P. syringae isolates circulating in our region are mostly epiphytes, and support the role of weeds associated with bean crops as reservoir of pathogenic strains of P. syringae pv. syringae. In Asturias, northern region of Spain, pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) with symptoms of disease such as cracks in the bark with dark exudates, was observed in June 2017. Two different bacteria were isolated from the recovered sample. The two bacteria were biochemically very similar and so were identified by 16S rDNA sequences. The sequence of strain LPPA 3463 had 99% similarity with that of the type strain of the species Brenneria goodwinii Denman et al., and the sequence of strain LPPA 3461 showed the same result with respect to the sequence of the type strain of the species Gibbsiella quercinecans Brady et al. For more accurate identification, gyrB and atpD genes were also sequenced. Pathogenicity tests were initially carried out by puncture with the two bacteria on acorns and after 15 days, a rotten area was observed in the nuts while the controls, inoculated with sterile water, remained healthy. B. goodwinii and G. quercinecans have been consistently associated with Acute Oak Disease (AOD) affecting native oak trees in the UK, usually with presence of galleries produced by the buprestid beetle Agrilus. However, larval galleries of the Agrilus were not present in the pedunculate oak sample. G. quercinecans was reported in Spain on both Quercus ilex L. (holm oak) and Q. pyrenaica Willd. (pyrenean oak), but not on Q. robur. The bacterium B. goodwinii has not been described in Spain, and consequently this is the first report of these bacteria in pedunculate oak in Spain.
