Fatigue driving significantly contributes to global vehicle accidents and fatalities, making driver fatigue level estimation crucial. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a proven reliable predictor of brain states. With Deep Learning (DL) advancements, brain state estimation algorithms have improved significantly. Nonetheless, EEG's multi-domain nature and the intricate spatial-temporal-frequency correlations among EEG channels present challenges in developing precise DL models. In this work, we introduce an innovative Attention-based Cross-Frequency Graph Convolutional Network (ACF-GCN) for estimating drivers' reaction times using EEG signals from theta, alpha, and beta bands. This method utilizes a multi-head attention mechanism to detect long-range dependencies between EEG channels across frequencies. Concurrently, the transformer's encoder module learns node-level feature maps from the attention-score matrix. Subsequently, the Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) integrates this matrix with feature maps to estimate driver reaction time. Our validation on a publicly available dataset shows that ACF-GCN outperforms several state-of-the-art methods. We also explore the brain dynamics within the cross-frequency attention-score matrix, identifying theta and alpha bands as key influencers in fatigue estimating performance. Based on the model-free adaptive control (MFAC) theory, the temperature tracking control problem of single-effect LiBr/H2O absorption chiller is explored. Due to the complex nonlinearity and strong coupling characteristics of the absorption refrigeration system, model-free adaptive control strategy is designed for its temperature tracking control. Nevertheless, the traditional model-free adaptive control has a slow tracking speed and poor denoising ability. In order to improve its control effect, output error rate is added to the objective function and new control laws of model-free adaptive control with output error rate (MFAC-OER) have been derived through an exhaustive convergence and stability analysis. The input information and output information of the absorption refrigeration system, namely the hot water pump frequency and chilled water outlet water temperature, are combined. The data model of the absorption refrigeration system is subsequently deduced using a compact format dynamic linearization method. Next, based on the single-effect absorption chiller experimental platform in our laboratory, its sixth-order dynamic model is built. Finally, the effectiveness and practicability of the improved control strategy are illustrated by numerical simulations and experimental operating data from our laboratory as well as by the dynamical model of the absorption chiller. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals acquired from brain can provide an effective representation of the human's physiological and pathological states. Up to now, much work has been conducted to study and analyze the EEG signals, aiming at spying the current states or the evolution characteristics of the complex brain system. Considering the complex interactions between different structural and functional brain regions, brain network has received a lot of attention and has made great progress in brain mechanism research. In addition, characterized by autonomous, multi-layer and diversified feature extraction, deep learning has provided an effective and feasible solution for solving complex classification problems in many fields, including brain state research. Both of them show strong ability in EEG signal analysis, but the combination of these two theories to solve the difficult classification problems based on EEG signals is still in its infancy. We here review the application of these two theories in EEG signal research, mainly involving brain–computer interface, neurological disorders and cognitive analysis. Furthermore, we also develop a framework combining recurrence plots and convolutional neural network to achieve fatigue driving recognition. The results demonstrate that complex networks and deep learning can effectively implement functional complementarity for better feature extraction and classification, especially in EEG signal analysis. Based on the idea of data-driven control, a novel iterative adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm based on the globalized dual heuristic programming (GDHP) technique is used to solve the optimal control problem of discrete-time nonlinear switched systems. In order to solve the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation of switched systems, the iterative ADP method is proposed and the strict convergence analysis is also provided. Three neural networks are constructed to implement the iterative ADP algorithm, where a novel model network is designed to identify the system dynamics, a critic network is used to approximate the cost function and its partial derivatives, and an action network is provided to obtain the approximate optimal control law. Two simulation examples are described to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing with the heuristic dynamic programming (HDP) and dual heuristic programming (DHP) methods. As a global and grievous mental disease, major depressive disorder (MDD) has received much attention. Accurate detection of MDD via physiological signals represents an urgent research topic. Here, a frequency-dependent multilayer brain network, combined with deep convolutional neural network (CNN), is developed to detect the MDD. Multivariate pseudo Wigner distribution is firstly introduced to extract the time-frequency characteristics from the multi-channel EEG signals. Then multilayer brain network is constructed, with each layer corresponding to a specific frequency band. Such multilayer framework is in line with the nature of the workings of the brain, and can effectively characterize the brain state. Further, a multilayer deep CNN architecture is designed to study the brain network topology features, which is finally used to accurately detect MDD. The experimental results on a publicly available MDD dataset show that the proposed approach is able to detect MDD with state-of-the-art accuracy of 97.27%. Our approach, combining multilayer brain network and deep CNN, enriches the multivariate time series analysis theory and helps to better characterize and recognize the complex brain states.
