Disease modelling has had considerable policy impact during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and it is increasingly acknowledged that combining multiple models can improve the reliability of outputs. Here we report insights from ten weeks of collaborative short-term forecasting of COVID-19 in Germany and Poland (12 October–19 December 2020). The study period covers the onset of the second wave in both countries, with tightening non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) and subsequently a decay (Poland) or plateau and renewed increase (Germany) in reported cases. Thirteen independent teams provided probabilistic real-time forecasts of COVID-19 cases and deaths. These were reported for lead times of one to four weeks, with evaluation focused on one- and two-week horizons, which are less affected by changing NPIs. Heterogeneity between forecasts was considerable both in terms of point predictions and forecast spread. Ensemble forecasts showed good relative performance, in particular in terms of coverage, but did not clearly dominate single-model predictions. The study was preregistered and will be followed up in future phases of the pandemic. Forecasting models have been used extensively to inform decision making during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this preregistered and prospective study, the authors evaluated 14 short-term models for Germany and Poland, finding considerable heterogeneity in predictions and highlighting the benefits of combined forecasts. A boundary conforming Delaunay mesh is a partitioning of a polyhedral domain into Delaunay simplices such that all boundary simplices satisfy the generalized Gabriel property. It’s dual is a Voronoi partition of the same domain which is preferable for Voronoi-box based finite volume schemes. For arbitrary 2D polygonal regions, such meshes can be generated in optimal time and size. For arbitrary 3D polyhedral domains, however, this problem remains a challenge. The main contribution of this paper is to show that boundary conforming Delaunay meshes for 3D polyhedral domains can be generated efficiently when the smallest input angle of the domain is bounded by arccos 1/3 ≈ 70.53°. In addition, well-shaped tetrahedra and an appropriate mesh size can be obtained. Our new results are achieved by reanalyzing a classical Delaunay refinement algorithm. Note that our theoretical guarantee on the input angle (70.53°) is still too strong for many practical situations. Repeated pesticide exposure may enhance biodegradation through selective enrichment of pesticide-metabolizing microorganisms, particularly when the compound is used as a C and energy source. The relationship between pesticide application history and degradation rate is unclear when the chemical is utilized as a nutrient source other than C. Atrazine, a poor source of C and energy, was chosen as a model compound because it can serve as an N source for some microorganisms. Soils with (H-soil) and without (NH-soil) prior s-triazine treatment history were repeatedly exposed to atrazine and a variety of C and N source amendments. Exposure to atrazine and inorganic-N availability were the dominant factors leading to the development of microbial communities with an enhanced capacity to degrade atrazine. The density of the atrazine-degrading microorganisms increased immediately, up to 1000-fold, with atrazine exposure in the H-soil, but comparable increases were not observed in the NH-soil until 12 weeks following laboratory acclimation, despite high rates of atrazine mineralization in these soils immediately following the acclimation period. Whole-soil fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis showed that the application of alternative C and N sources in addition to atrazine resulted in a microbial community composition that was distinctly different from that in either the atrazine-alone treatment or water controls for both the H- and NH-soils. These data suggest that the microbial communities in both soils were altered differently in response to the treatments but developed a similar enhanced capacity to mineralize atrazine. Bacteria isolated from the root zones of field-grown soybean plants [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] were examined in a series of glasshouse experiments for an ability to affect nodulation competition among three strains of Bradyrhizobium japonicum (USDA 31, USDA 110, and USDA 123). Inocula applied at planting contained competing strains of B. japonicum with or without one of eleven isolates of rhizosphere bacteria. Tap-root nodules were harvested 28 days after planting, and nodule occupancies were determined for the bradyrhizobia strains originally applied. Under conditions of low iron availability, five isolates (four Pseudomonas spp. plus one Serratia sp.) caused significant changes in nodule occupancy relative to the corresponding control which was not inoculated with rhizosphere bacteria. During subsequent glasshouse experiments designed to verify and further characterize these effects, three fluorescent Pseudomonas spp. consistently altered nodulation competition among certain combinations of bradyrhizobia strains when the rooting medium did not contain added iron. This alteration typically reflected enhanced nodulation by USDA 110. Two of these isolates produced similar, although less pronounced, effects when ferric hydroxide was added to the rooting medium. The results suggest that certain rhizosphere bacteria, particularly fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., can affect nodulation competition among strains of R. japonicum. An additional implication is that iron availability may be an important factor modifying interactions involving the soybean plant, B. japonicum, and associated microorganisms in the host rhizosphere. If styrene-divinylbenzene copolymerization is performed at certain conditions of network formation, regions of relative high segmental density may occur. The segmental density can be monitored directly by the microstructure sensitive fluorescence polarization method. Measurements were made in the pre- and post-gel state at various degrees of conversion depending on the initial composition of the reaction mixture. The surface structure of very thin (15-20 nm) spin-coated films of a symmetrical poly(styrene- b-methyl-methacrylate) block copolymer on silicon and mica is analyzed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films show a surface corrugation of a very regular ∼100 nm lateral periodicity and ∼6-8 nm amplitude. Film thickness is measured by AFM at induced film defects and checked by ellipsometry. XPS shows that both blocks are at the film surface. Selective degradation of the methyl methacrylate block is used for contrast enhancement and allows to assign poly(styrene) to the elevated surface regions and poly(methyl methacrylate) to the substrate/film interface. Friction interactions of the AFM tip with the film surface may be used to induce high orientational ordering of the morphological pattern perpendicular to the fast scan direction. The groundstate-stable dimers in the non-crystalline regions of uniaxially drawn poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films were used as chain-intrinsic fluorescent labels for studying the orientation distribution in the non-crystalline regions. As far as indicated by the spectra and the fluorescence decay law, the fluorescent group remains unchanged when the sample is uniaxially oriented by drawing above the glass transition temperature. In contrary to the behaviour of physically incorporated probe molecules, the orientation coefficient f of the dimers is proportional to the amorphous orientation coefficient f; concerning the fluorescence signal, 'amorphous' includes all the material outside the perfect crystal. During deformation, the orientation coefficient f follows approximately a superposition curve of crystallite-like orientation, separable in the initial range of stretching ratio λ <2.5, and of true-amorphous orientation of the affine network type that becomes noticably at λ>3. At temperatures closely above T, and within the selected range of stretching parameters, the fluorescence intensity of PET remains nearly constant with increasing stretching ratio λ; at λ>2.5, where the maximum crystallite orientation is achieved and the increase of amorphous orientation becomes noticably, a slight augmentation of the dimer concentration is observed. Electrostriction of tactic polymethylmethacrylates in response to step-on and step-off dc-fields was investigated in the field strength range from 1 to 5 MV m at room temperature; one example of electrostriction under sinusoidal field is given. Three principal retardation time regions were found: τ=1.5 s, τ=30 s, and τ=140 s, each field strength independent. The retardation strengths belonging to these electrostrictive processes depend on tacticity. The low frequency limit of the electrostrictive volume compliance for the investigated PMMA is δ=−1.2×10 m V for atactic, δ=−2.3×10 m V for syndiotactic, and δ=−4.5 × 10 m V for isotactic PMMA. Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analysis is commonly used by soil scientists as a sole method for identifying soil bacteria. We observed discrepancies with this method for identifying certain species of bacteria. Therefore, we used carbon substrate oxidation patterns (BIOLOG) and some simple physical and chemical tests to determine the extent of these discrepancies. Identification with FAME profiles gave false positives for Arthrobacter globiformis, Micrococcus kristinae, and M. luteus, and identification with BIOLOG patterns gave a false positive identification for A. globiformis. A visual check and Gram stain are recommended when FAME analysis identifies soil isolates as M. kristinae or M. luteus, and an additional spore formation test is recommended when FAME and BIOLOG analyses identify isolates as A. globiformis. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have become a major pixel technology in the display sector, with products spanning the entire range of current panel sizes. The ability to freely scale the active area to large and random surfaces paired with flexible substrates provides additional application scenarios for OLEDs in the general lighting, automotive, and signage sectors. These applications require higher brightness and, thus, current density operation compared to the specifications needed for general displays. As extended transparent electrodes pose a significant ohmic resistance, OLEDs suffering from Joule self-heating exhibit spatial inhomogeneities in electrical potential, current density, and hence luminance. In this article, we provide experimental proof of the theoretical prediction that OLEDs will display regions of decreasing luminance with increasing driving current. With a two-dimensional OLED model, we can conclude that these regions are switched back locally in voltage as well as current due to insufficient lateral thermal coupling. Experimentally, we demonstrate this effect in lab-scale devices and derive that it becomes more severe with increasing pixel size, which implies its significance for large-area, high-brightness use cases of OLEDs.
