Courts often rely on video evidence, assuming it accurately shows important legal details. Yet, studies suggest that video isn't inherently "objective" and people, including legal professionals, might misinterpret its objectivity due to video quality or context. This study aimed to explore how video speed variations and contextual information affect judgments of responsibility in a video portraying a bus assault. The study employed a 5 × 3 mixed design, with video speed (Very Slow, 0.88x; Slow, 0.96x; Neutral, 1.00x; Fast, 1.04x; Very Fast, 1.12x) as a between-subject variable, contextual information (Hit, Harm, Kill) attributed to the perpetrator's action as a within-subject factor, and dimensions of accountability, predictability, criminal intent, and severity as dependent variables. ANOVA results from a sample of 300 participants (60 per video speed condition) revealed that the highest levels of accountability, criminal intent, and predictability were attributed when the contextual information was "hit" as compared to the "harm" and "kill" actions. Furthermore, the greatest difference in accountability and criminal intent scores for the kill action was between the very fast and very slow conditions. These findings raise significant concerns about the use of video evidence in criminal proceedings, as video speed manipulation and contextual information can have a substantial impact on responsibility judgments. Blowflies and beetles are among the invertebrate species that are attracted to dead bodies and can provide valid evidence in cases of murder or suspicious death investigation. An important consideration is the quality of the evidence which partly depends on the accurate identification of invertebrates. The morphological identification of blowflies has some limitations, especially in relation to damaged samples, or immature stages of the flies. DNA-based techniques such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence analysis have been applied to overcome the shortfalls of the classical identification methods. The present study combined the use of classical and PCR methods to identify invertebrates associated with pig carrions in Nigeria. Adult invertebrates were collected on and around pig carcasses in Nigeria. A total of 416 invertebrates belonging to Diptera; Calliphoridae (n = 160), Sarcophagidae (n = 26) and Muscidae (n = 72) while Coleopterans; Dermestidae (n = 52), Histeridae (n = 63), Cleridae (n = 25) and Silphidae (n = 18) families collected from pig carrions in Nigeria were identified. The cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1) gene from selected specimens was amplified and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence analysis and phylogenetic trees confirmed the presence of dipterans and coleopterans of forensic importance in Nigeria. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to use the mitochondrial cox1 gene coupled with sequence analysis to identify and characterize arthropods of forensic importance in Nigeria. The environmental contamination by extremophile Aspergillus species, i.e., Aflatoxin B1, is hardly controllable in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, which lack handling resources and controlled storage facilities. Acute aflatoxicosis poisoning from aflatoxin-prone dietary staples could cause acute hepatic necrosis, acute liver failure, and death. Here, as the cheaper, more straightforward, and facile on-site diagnostic kit is needed, we report an ultraviolet-excitable optical aptasensor based on a fluorinated ethylene propylene film strip. Molecular dynamics on the aptamer.AFB1 complex revealed that the AFB1 to the aptamer increases the overall structural stability, suggesting that the aptamer design is suitable for the intended application. Under various influencing factors, the proposed label-free strategy offers a fast 20-min on-site fabrication simplicity and 19-day shelf-life. The one-pot incubation provides an alternative to catalytic detection and exhibited 4 times reusability. The recovery of crude brown sugar, processed peanuts, and long-grain rice were 102.74 ± 0.41 (n = 3), 86.90 ± 3.38 (n = 3), and 98.50 ± 0.42 (n = 3), comparable to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Photodiode Array Detector results. Food aspiration is one of the major health risks for elderly people in nursing homes which could lead to death. Moreover, misconducts in pharmacotherapy may represent a potential risk of adverse drug reactions. It is reported here the toxicological evaluation of a combined death by food aspiration and acute escitalopram intoxication of a psychiatric subject, occurred in a nursing home. An 89-year-old man, suffering from dysphagia and Alzheimer's, was resident in a nursing home. He was fed with a liquid diet administered directly in mouth using a syringe. The man was also being treated with escitalopram 10 mg tablet. One evening, after receiving the meal in the usual way, the man complained of sudden illness. Carried to the emergency room, the man died about 3 h later with a diagnosis of cardiogenic shock subsequentially to ab ingestis. The histological findings revealed the presence of exogenous material, probably food, up to the finest bronchial branches. The toxicological examination revealed the presence of escitalopram and its main metabolite, desmethylcitalopram: in the blood 1972 ng/ml and 285 ng/ml, in the brain 4657 ng/g and 1025 ng/g, in the gastric content 2317 ng/g and 423 ng/g, in the lung 21,771 ng/g and 468 ng/g, respectively. The bad practice of the nurses to dissolve the escitalopram tablet in the liquefied food and to administer the therapy with a syringe directly into the mouth emerged thanks this investigation. Following food aspiration, escitalopram was absorbed by inhalation route, reaching high concentrations in blood and tissues. The development of a portable analytical procedure is described for rapid sequential detection and quantification of the explosives 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) in forensic samples using a graphite sheet (GS). A single GS platform works as a collector of explosive residues and detector after its assembly into a 3D-printed cell. The detection strategy is based on cyclic square-wave stripping voltammetry. The cathodic scan from + 0.1 to −1.0 V with accumulation at 0.0 V enables the TNT detection (three reduction peaks), and the anodic scan from + 0.2 to + 1.55 V with accumulation at −0.9 V provides the RDX detection (two oxidation processes). Low detection limit values (0.1 µmol L−1 for TNT and 2.4 µmol L−1 for RDX) and wide linear ranges (from 1 to 150 µmol L−1 for TNT and from 20 to 300 µmol L−1 for RDX) were obtained. The sensor did not respond to pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), which was evaluated as a potential interferent, because plastic explosives contain mixtures of TNT, RDX, and PETN. The GS electrode was also evaluated as a collector of TNT and RDX residues spread on different surfaces to simulate forensic scenarios. After swiping over different surfaces (metal, granite, wood, cloths, hands, money bills, and cellphone), the GS electrode was assembled in the 3D-printed cell ready to measure both explosives by the proposed method. While there has been notable research activity in the field of clinical neuropathology over the recent years, forensic approaches have been less frequent. This scoping literature review explored original research on forensic neuropathology over the past decade (January 1, 2010, until February 12, 2022) using the MEDLINE database. The aims were to (1) analyze the volume of research on the topic, (2) describe meta-level attributes and sample characteristics, and (3) summarize key research themes and methods. Of 5053 initial hits, 2864 fell within the target timeframe, and 122 were included in the review. Only 3–17 articles were published per year globally. Most articles originated from the Europe (39.3%) and Asia (36.1%) and were published in forensic journals (57.4%). A median sample included 57 subjects aged between 16 and 80 years. The most common research theme was traumatic intracranial injury (24.6%), followed by anatomy (12.3%) and substance abuse (11.5%). Key methods included immunotechniques (31.1%) and macroscopic observation (21.3%). Although a number of novel findings were reported, most were of preliminary nature and will require further validation. In order to reach breakthroughs and validate novel tools for routine use, more research input is urged from researchers across the world. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and concussion substantially burden patients, care providers, and society. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention & National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 2010) stated that concussion and brain injury symptoms could persist for days, weeks, or longer, and that recovery can be slower for old individuals, young children, teens, and those with a prior traumatic brain injury (TBI) history. Evidence shows that individuals with mTBI can have delayed recovery with limited community integration and substantial long-term disability. Also, considerable evidence from multiple sources underscore the association between mTBI and the increased rate of suicide, suicide attempt, and suicide ideation. Yet, according to the New York Academy of Science, there is limited concordance between neurobiological explanations for concussion and neuropsychological functions. Current medical research is equivocal on the prognosis rate of recovery and duration of mTBI, particularly after many months. While some experts suggest that those not showing signs of improvement are a distinct group of patients that have "intentional" TBI symptoms (e.g., for litigation and disability entitlement purposes), many individuals genuinely suffer from sensory dysfunctions months post-TBI. Using an evidence-based approach, we review the relevant literature on the chronic somatosensory dysfunctions emanating from mTBI/concussion, including vestibular dysfunction, and start by presenting a clinical case. It is believed that vestibular dysfunctions (e.g., ataxia, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), and persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD), just to name a few), whether due to a central or peripheral lesion and with impact on return to work or to sport that affects roughly half of acute TBI patients, tend to be cryptogenic in nature in chronic TBI cases. In forensic detailed evaluations, it is often challenging to separate the cognitive impact of mTBI from the vestibular issues alone. Furthermore, assessment of vestibular dysfunction (e.g., dizziness, vertigo, nystagmus, imbalance, and persistent nausea), diagnostic criteria, neurocognitive consequences, psychiatric comorbidities with psychological impacts, and treatment approaches (e.g., pharmacotherapy and rehabilitation), with emphasis on implications for neuropsychological assessment practice, and future research guideline are discussed. It was fairly simple to properly manipulate video content thanks to the accessibility of inexpensive software products like Adobe Premiere, Magix Vegas, Mokey by Imagineer Systems, and Microsoft Movie Maker. Thanks to these sophisticated video editing programmes, changing the contents of digital videos has become very simple. In order to hide the truth, video editing software is frequently used to copy and paste a section of the frame from one location to another region in the same frame or another frame. One of the most popular techniques for manipulating with videos is region duplication. By examining the spatial and temporal correlations between the frame's pixels, numerous approaches to identify such tampering in digital video sequences have been presented by various researchers. Nevertheless, majority of the algorithms have significant computational cost and low accuracy. In this research, we present a novel region duplication tampering detection method that uses wavelet transform and Euclidean distance to identify intra frame region duplication in a video sequence. The proposed method is assessed using a variety of video sequences where region duplication in frames introduced. Performance of the suggested technique is evaluated based on experimental findings in terms of Precision, Recall, F1, Accuracy, and calculation time. To determine the sources and pathways of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in river sediments contaminated with metals from mining and smelting activities, metal concentrations and Pb and Zn isotope ratios were measured in river water and sediment, and potential metal contaminant samples (imported Zn concentrates, smelting wastes, soils around the smelter, mine ores, and riverside tailings). Zn and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in river water and sediment samples were 30- and 11–25-fold higher, respectively, near the smelter than upstream, while a 6-fold increase in sediment Pb concentrations was detected over the same region. Sediment samples near the smelter (207Pb/206Pb = 0.8638 and 208Pb/206Pb = 2.0960) were observed to have a different Pb isotopic composition from upstream of the smelter (207Pb/206Pb = 0.8322 and 208Pb/206Pb = 2.0502), with δ66Zn values increasing from –0.01 to 0.82‰. Analysis of Pb and Zn isotopes and concentrations revealed that dust-contaminated soils were a major Pb source, and baseline sediments were found to be contaminated by regional mining tailings. For Zn in sediments, the main Zn sources were groundwater-derived Zn (δ66Zn = 1.02 ± 0.43‰, n = 4), dust-contaminated soils (δ66Zn = –0.18 ± 0.08‰, n = 3), and tailings-contaminated sediments (δ66Zn = 0.01 ± 0.07‰, n = 10). Endmember mixing model results showed that dust-contaminated soils contributed 78% and 64% of sediment Pb and Zn, respectively, within 2 km of the Zn smelter, decreasing to negligible levels after 47.1 km downstream. Downstream of the smelter, groundwater-derived Zn contributed 54% of sediment Zn, whereas tailings contaminated sediments contributed 70% and 25% of Pb and Zn, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Signature verification is a critical task in many applications, including forensic science, legal judgments, and financial markets. However, current signature verification systems are often difficult to explain, which can limit their acceptance in these applications. In this paper, we propose a novel explainable offline automatic signature verifier (ASV) to support forensic handwriting examiners. Our ASV is based on a universal background model (UBM) constructed from offline signature images. It allows us to assign a questioned signature to the UBM and to a reference set of known signatures using simple distance measures. This makes it possible to explain the verifier's decision in a way that is understandable to non-experts. We evaluated our ASV on publicly available databases and found that it achieves competitive performance with state-of-the-art ASVs, even when challenging 1 versus 1 comparisons are considered. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to develop an explainable ASV that is also competitive in terms of performance. Background: The ears have increasingly been recognized as one of the supportive tools in forensics, based on the identification of landmark variations of ear biometrics in living persons. However, no studies on the reliability of such comparisons have been done on the deceased. Methods: The study aimed to investigate the correlation between ear biometrics and the age, sex, and stature of the deceased. The study was conducted on 181 deceased persons, aged between 18 and 70 years old on cases received by the Forensic Unit of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. Documentation of age, sex, race, and height was recorded, and photographs of bilateral ears were taken. Measurements of twelve ear biometrics based on the Iannarelli method and ear length and ear width were taken from the photographs. Results: Results showed that there was a significant difference between males and females in six ear biometrics. There was also a significant correlation between ear biometrics, that is, ear length and ear width with the age and height of an individual. Conclusions: In brief, there exists a significant difference between males and females in ear biometrics with good correlations between ear biometrics and the height and age of an individual. Background: Forensic diatomology is a rapidly progressing domain that involves the examination of microscopic algae known as diatoms for forensic purposes. Diatoms are microscopic, single-celled, eukaryotic algae that exist in diverse aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans. They are characterized by their rigid cell wall made up of silica, which is a unique morphological character, making them useful for forensic investigations. Main body: Diatoms are a type of unicellular microscopic algae that belong to the class Bacillariophyta. They are one of the most common phytoplankton found in all aquatic environments, including marine and freshwater habitats. Diatoms have proven to be valuable evidence in various forensic investigations, particularly in cases involving drowning or bodies recovered from aquatic environments. Conclusion: This comprehensive review provides an in-depth analysis of the principles, methodologies, applications, and challenges associated with the field of forensic diatomology. It emphasizes the importance of diatoms as trace evidence and discusses their potential to establish critical associations between the victim and the surroundings. This review also explores some recent advancements in diatom analysis techniques, including molecular approaches and automated identification methods. Finally, the paper outlines future directions for research and underlines the necessity for standardized protocols and interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the reliability and validity of forensic diatomology. All unexpected deaths of children require an autopsy to determine the cause of death. In cases of aortic rupture, the immediate cause of death is easily identified at autopsy. Although the majority of aortic ruptures are caused by high-energy trauma, other causes should not be missed. We present and discuss the case of a 29-month-old child who died suddenly at home. Her recent medical history and the ecchymotic lesions observed on external examination of the body appeared potentially suspicious of physical abuse. The autopsy concluded that death was due to complete rupture of the abdominal aorta with associated vertebral disjunction. At first glance, the overall forensic picture could suggest a traumatic death. However, careful inspection of the retroperitoneum revealed a discrete atypical mass of infiltrative tissue within the hematoma. Histopathological examinations confirmed tumor proliferation of the soft tissues, triggering vascular and spinal injuries. Other paraneoplastic elements or metastases were ultimately revealed (orbital and subcutaneous). Overall, this was a rare and fatal case of abdominal aortic rupture induced by tumors. Due to the mechanisms and the forces needed to cause vertebral dislocations and aortic rupture, the combination of the two is highly suggestive of child abuse when an accidental traumatic history is absent or inconsistent with the injuries. Chrysomya megacephala and C. rufifacies are globally predominant species of blowflies that are amongst the primary colonisers of decomposing carcasses. The development of blowflies has been studied extensively to estimate the minimum postmortem interval (PMImin). This article evaluates the effect of aluminium phosphide (AlP) on the larval morphometry and life cycles of C. megacephala and C. rufifacies. The rabbits were given different dosages of AlP and their livers were excised to rear C. megacephala and C. rufifacies. Through multiple-regression analysis, we assessed the overall impact of varying dosages of AlP on larvae of both species. AlP accelerated development until pupation, whilst the time until emergence remained the same. At higher concentrations, AlP had a positive effect on the development of these species. Since both species are abundant, forensic entomology studies examining the effect of AlP on morphometry and developmental stages would provide valuable information to investigators assessing PMImin. The aim of this study is to compare substance use by forensic patients who have been formally recalled to hospital with those who remain conditionally discharged in the community. Data were collected from recalled patients (recalled group; RG) and those who remain conditionally discharged (discharged group; DG). A drug history was taken alongside wellbeing measures and screening of case notes. Cannabis use was significantly more prevalent in the RG post-discharge and subsequently in the community. Analysis comparing substance use in the community at different time points found that the DG was significantly less likely to be using cannabis post-discharge and subsequently in the community, compared to use at the time of their index offence. In contrast, the RG showed no change in cannabis use across time. Users of cannabis and alcohol post-discharge spent a significantly shorter amount of time in the community than non-users. A bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) found dead in northern Spain presented external lesions consistent with electrocution as the cause of death. During forensic examination, macroscopic lesions suggested potential comorbidity, so samples were collected for molecular and toxicological analyses. Gastric content and liver were analysed for toxic substances, and pentobarbital (a common pharmaceutical used for euthanasia in domestic animals) was detected at a concentration of 37.3 and 0.05 µg/g, respectively. Other toxicological, viral and endoparasite analyses (avian malaria, avian influenza and flaviviruses) were negative. Thus, although the cause of death was electrocution, pentobarbital intoxication likely impaired the equilibrium and reflexes of the individual, possibly causing the bird to contact energized wires that it would not have otherwise. These results underline the importance of comprehensive analysis of forensic cases of wildlife deaths and reveal barbiturate poisoning as an additional threat for the conservation of the bearded vulture in Europe. Background: Short tandem repeat (STR) markers cannot be used to distinguish between genetically identical monozygotic (MZ) twins, causing problems in a case with an MZ twin as a suspect. Many studies have shown that in older MZ twins, there are significant differences in overall content and genomic distribution of methylation. Objective: In this study, we analyzed the DNA methylome profile of blood to identify recurrent differentially methylated CpG sites (DMCs) to discriminate between MZ twins. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 47 paired MZ twins. We performed the DNA methylation profiling using the HumanMethylation EPIC BeadChip platform and identified recurrent DMCs between MZ twins. Then, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Gene Ontology (GO), and motif enrichment analyses were performed to reveal the biological functions of recurrent DMCs. We collected DNA methylome data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) public database to verify the recurrent DMCs between MZ twins. Results: We identified recurrent DMCs between MZ twin samples and observed that they were enriched in immune-related genes. In addition, we verified our DMCs in a public dataset. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the methylation level at recurrent DMCs between MZ twins may serve as a valuable biomarker for identification of individuals in a pair of MZ twins. Aortic injuries are the second leading cause of death after head injuries due to traffic accidents, and strain-induced injuries are becoming increasingly prominent. The quantitative study of aortic strain injury allows for a rapid assessment of the degree of aortic injury after an accident and timely diagnosis of the pathology of aortic injury. It is more reliable than diagnosis based on clinical symptoms alone and it is faster than diagnosis based on imaging. Based on the porcine aortic tensile and injury tests, this study obtained the maximum stress threshold of the aorta that can withstand tensile stress and the safe stress threshold under tensile action, which provides a more detailed data reference about aortic injury in the field of internal medicine. Injuries to the aorta under various degrees of traction were analyzed in detail. A comprehensive and quantitative evaluation criterion for aortic strain injury was proposed, which provides a more in-depth reference for the mechanism of aortic strain injury. Cases of genital amputation require a careful investigation, since they may be the result of self-inflicted injuries, assaults, animal predation, or post-mortem body mutilation. In the present case, an 81-year-old man affected by liver cirrhosis and dementia and suffering from sexual disinhibition was found lying half-naked and unconscious in his courtyard; profuse bleeding in the perineal area and the absence of the external genitalia were observed. The victim was transferred to hospital and underwent surgical emergency treatment, but he died 2 days later. No sharp tools were found on the scene. Moreover, the autopsy did not reveal any defense or tentative wound on the body and no blood stains on the hands of the victim. Several linear scratches were detected close to the edges of the wound; according to the surgical report, these scratches were clean-cut in the lower part and crenated and infiltrated by blood in the cranial part. Although the medical history of the man could be consistent with self-mutilation, it was not possible to rule out the involvement of other people, including the possibility of an attempt by his relatives to cover up what may have been a self-amputation. Furthermore, the victim's dog vomited parts of the man's genitalia while being transported to a dog shelter. Similar cases have rarely been published in the current forensic literature. Neuropsychologists' conclusions and courtroom testimony on malingering can have profound impact. Intensive and ingenious research has advanced our capacities to identify both insufficient and sufficient effort and thus make worthy contributions to just conflict resolution. Nevertheless, given multiple converging factors, such as misleadingly high accuracy rates in many studies, practitioners may well develop inflated confidence in methods for evaluating effort/malingering. Considerable research shows that overconfidence often increases diagnostic and predictive error and may lead to fixed conclusions when caution is better advised. Leonhard's work thus performs an important service by alerting us to methodological considerations and shortcomings that can generate misimpressions about the efficacy of effort/malingering assessment. The present commentary covers various additional complicating factors in malingering assessment, including other factors that also inflate confidence; subtle and perhaps underappreciated methodological flaws that are inversely related to positive study outcomes (i.e., the worse the flaws the better methods appear to be); oversimplified classifications schemes for studying and evaluating effort that overlook, for example, common mixed presentations (e.g., malingering and genuinely injured); and the need to expand research across a greater range and severity of neuropsychological conditions and diverse groups. More generally, although endorsing various points that Leonhard raises, a number of questions and concerns are presented, such as methods for calculating the impact of case exclusions in studies. Ultimately, although Leonhard's conclusions may be more negative than is justified, it seems fair to categorize methods for assessing malingering/effort as advancing, but not yet advanced, with much more needed to be done to approach that latter status. Drones, formally known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), are versatile technology increasingly associated with many modern-day applications. The advancements in technology have brought about a revolution in drones, extending their applications in various fields, including forensic science. Despite their potential, the full extent of drone capabilities in forensic science remains unclear and limited by a lack of defined evidence. Therefore, this article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the current literature on the use of drones in forensic science, while also highlighting the challenges and limitations of their deployment. This review seeks to identify areas for further research and development in the use of drones in forensic science by exploring the key issues. The use of Arksey and O’Malley’s framework updated by Joanna Briggs Institute for Scoping Reviews methodology shows that drones have proven to be a valuable technology in various forensic-related events, including clandestine graves detection, crime scene investigations, traffic accident investigations, disaster assistance, and pollution detection. However, there is still inadequate information on the use of drones in forensic science, particularly in enhancing the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) procedure during the initial phase of a disaster. In civil and forensic evaluations of psychological damage, depression is one of the most commonly identified disorders, and also one of the most frequently feigned. Thus, practitioners are often confronted with situations in which they must assess whether the symptomatology presented by a patient is genuine or being feigned for secondary gains. While effective, traditional feigning detection instruments generate a high number of false positives—especially among patients presenting with severe symptomatology. The current study aimed at equipping forensic specialists with an empirical decision-making strategy for evaluating patient credibility on the basis of test results. In total, 315 participants were administered the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) and SIMS Affective Disorders (SIMS AF) scales. Response patterns across the experimental groups (i.e., Honest, Simulators, Honest with Depressive Symptoms) were analyzed. A machine learning decision tree model (i.e., J48), considering performance on both measures, was built to effectively distinguish Honest with Depressive Symptoms subjects from Simulators. A forward logistic regression model was run to determine which SIMS AF items best identified Simulators, in comparison with Honest with Depressive Symptoms subjects. The results showed that the combination of feigning detection instruments and clinical tests generated incremental specificity, thereby reducing the risk of misclassifying Honest with Depressive Symptoms subjects as feigners. Furthermore, the performance analysis of SIMS AF items showed that Simulators were more likely to endorse three specific items. Thus, computational models may provide effective support to forensic practitioners, who must make complex decisions on the basis of multiple elements. A new electrochemical device fabricated by the combination of 3D printing manufacturing and laser-generated graphene sensors is presented. Cell and electrodes were 3D printed by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique employing acrylonitrile butadiene styrene filament (insulating material that composes the cell) and conductive filament (lab-made filament based on graphite dispersed into polylactic acid matrix) to obtain reference and auxiliary electrodes. Infrared-laser engraved graphene, also reported as laser-induced graphene (LIG), was produced by laser conversion of a polyimide substrate, which was assembled in the 3D-printed electrochemical cell that enables the analysis of low volumes (50–2000 μL). XPS analysis revealed the formation of nitrogen-doped graphene multilayers that resulted in excellent electrochemical sensing properties toward the detection of atropine (ATR), a substance that was found in beverages to facilitate sexual assault and other criminal acts. Linear range between 5 and 35 μmol L−1, detection limit of 1 μmol L−1, and adequate precision (RSD = 4.7%, n = 10) were achieved using differential-pulse voltammetry. The method was successfully applied to beverage samples with recovery values ranging from 80 to 105%. Interference studies in the presence of species commonly found in beverages confirmed satisfactory selectivity for ATR sensing. Pain relief in hip fracture patients may be sought by injecting local anesthetic such as ropivacaine, bupivacaine, and lidocaine to the femoral area. As femoral veins are a routine sampling site for postmortem blood, this short report aimed to describe the levels of local anesthetics in ipsilateral (i.e., side of surgery) and contralateral (i.e., opposite side) femoral blood in ten medico-legal autopsy cases that had undergone a hip fracture surgery within 7 days before death. Postmortem blood samples were systematically collected from the ipsilateral and contralateral femoral veins, and toxicological analysis was performed in an accredited laboratory. The sample comprised six female and four male decedents who died at the age of 71–96 years. Median postoperative survival was 0 days and median postmortem interval 11 days. Strikingly, ropivacaine concentration was a median of 24.0 (range 1.4–28.4) times higher on the ipsilateral than contralateral side. The median ipsilateral concentration of ropivacaine clearly exceeded the 97.5th reference percentile measured in this laboratory for ropivacaine in postmortem cases representing all causes of death. The remaining drugs did not show high concentrations or notable differences between the sides. Our data clearly advise against performing postmortem toxicology on femoral blood from the operated side; the contralateral side may constitute a better sampling site. Toxicology reports that are based on blood collected from the operated area should be interpreted with caution. VX is a highly toxic organophosphorus nerve agent that reacts with a variety of endogenous proteins such as serum albumin under formation of adducts that can be targeted by analytical methods for biomedical verification of exposure. Albumin is phosphonylated by the ethyl methylphosphonic acid moiety (EMP) of VX at various tyrosine residues. Additionally, the released leaving group of VX, 2-(diisopropylamino)ethanethiol (DPAET), may react with cysteine residues in diverse proteins. We developed and validated a microbore liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (µLC-ESI MS/HR MS) method enabling simultaneous detection of three albumin-derived biomarkers for the analysis of rat plasma. After pronase-catalyzed cleavage of rat plasma proteins single phosphonylated tyrosine residues (Tyr-EMP), the Cys34(-DPAET)Pro dipeptide as well as the rat-specific LeuProCys448(-DPAET) tripeptide were obtained. The time-dependent adduct formation in rat plasma was investigated in vitro and biomarker formation during proteolysis was optimized. Biomarkers were shown to be stable for a minimum of four freeze-and-thaw cycles and for at least 24 h in the autosampler at 15 °C thus making the adducts highly suited for bioanalysis. Cys34(-DPAET)Pro was superior compared to the other serum biomarkers considering the limit of identification and stability in plasma at 37 °C. For the first time, Cys34(-DPAET)Pro was detected in in vivo specimens showing a time-dependent concentration increase after subcutaneous exposure of rats underlining the benefit of the dipeptide disulfide biomarker for sensitive analysis. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of established mathematical regression models for estimating the age of Egyptian children, develop new models that would better match this population and to evaluate the validity and reliability of these new models. Results: One thousand one hundred fifteen children ranging in age between 6–14 years participated in the study. Group I consisted of 1000 children; 513 (51.3%) children were of the age group 6–< 9 years and 487 (48.7%) children were 9–14 years. Male children were 484 (48.4%) while female children were 516 (51.6%). Group II consisted of 115 children; 84 (73%) children were of the age group 6–< 9 years and 31 (27%) children were 9–14 years. Male children were 58 (50.4%) while Female children were 57 (49.6%). Foti regression models showed poor agreement of Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) with chronological age of children in the mixed dentition stage. The new regression models for estimating dental age showed ICC of more than 0.7 with chronological age suggesting better accuracy in age estimation than Foti models. Conclusions: The newly formulated regression models are reliable for estimating the age of Egyptian children during the mixed dentition stage. A good agreement was found between the estimated age obtained from the first two models and the chronological age. Areh et al. (Psychiatry, Psychology and Law 29:183–205, 2022) recently commented on what standards should be applied to determine whether a test is appropriate for psycholegal use and concluded that the Rorschach does not meet their proposed standards. Accordingly, they concluded that psychologists should not use it in legal contexts. However, Areh et al.'s (2022) claims are based on a significant misunderstanding of how the Rorschach task works, relative neglect of the last 20 years of Rorschach research, unrealistic psychometric standards for assessing the reliability and validity of a psychological assessment measure, and a single European legal case in which a forensic expert used the Rorschach inappropriately. Our article seeks to clarify and correct some of their errors and misleading assertions. First, we clarify how the Rorschach task works according to more recent and widely accepted conceptualizations. Then, we show that Areh et al.'s (2022) position that Rorschach task data do not meet acceptable validity standards, especially when compared to medical tests, is empirically untenable. Next, we provide a detailed and nuanced account of what the Rorschach has to offer as a performance-based assessment method for forensic evaluators and the legal system, with attention paid to the anecdotal legal case Areh et al. (2022) highlighted. Finally, we provide four reasons why the Rorschach can be a useful tool for forensic mental health assessments when using the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS). Fatigue resulting from unpredictable or extended working conditions is a factor that negatively impacts the performance of police officers. In this study, we considered how investigative interviewing of children is influenced by interviewer working conditions. We examined two working conditions concerning when interviews were conducted: (a) during early duty shift and (b) an hour before the end of an interviewer's duty shift and after the end of a shift. We analysed 102 police interviews with children and identified clues that interviews which commenced during early duty shift had more appropriate approaches than interviews in the other condition. Inappropriate approaches were not significantly affected by interviewer working conditions. These outcomes suggest considering new knowledge specific to the behaviour of interviewers according to working conditions and provide promising foundations for further research. Background: Postmortem imaging is used more widely as the number of conventional autopsies has decreased over the last several decades. It is widely accepted in Europe, Asia and Oceania, but there has been a delay in acceptance in North America. Education, scanning protocols, resourcing and clinical incentives are needed to support this emerging field. Objective: To determine the use of postmortem imaging and define perceived barriers to its implementation with the goal of expanding postmortem imaging in the United States and Canada. Materials and methods: We sent an online survey to active members of the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR) addressing the use of postmortem imaging, indications, readers, practical aspects, anticipated barriers and potential solutions to more widespread use. Results: More than 50% of the 50 institutions that returned surveys used postmortem computed tomography; 24% used postmortem magnetic resonance imaging. Most postmortem imaging cases were read by radiologists. Fewer than 50% had formal correlation with autopsy results or an established relationship with the local medical examiner. Seven institutions reported reimbursement for postmortem imaging. Major barriers to postmortem imaging included lack of funding and lack of interest among clinicians. Funding and education were seen as important issues requiring attention. Conclusion: While most responding institutions provide pediatric postmortem imaging, the modalities, protocols, reporting procedures and clinical correlation vary widely. A lack of funding and few opportunities for education are limiting factors. Attention to these issues along with active support from the SPR are seen as potential solutions to recognize the value and promote widespread acceptance of postmortem imaging. The Schema Mode Inventory was the first tool that was developed to assess schema modes (SMI; Young et al., 2007). Recently, the SMI was expanded to also assess forensic modes (Bernstein et al., 2014). The main purpose of the current study was to test The Schema Mode Inventory – Forensics' (SMI-F) reliability and validity. The sample consists of (n = 1271) volunteer undergraduate students across various universities from Turkey. The sample consisted mostly of females (77.5%). The mean age of the whole sample was 20.43 (SD = 2.16, range = 18-57). In order to test the psychometric properties of the SMI-F, we carried out confirmatory factor analysis, multiple regression analysis, correlational analyses for test-retest, and calculated the correlations and internal reliability coefficients. Overall, the results revealed that the SMI-F has satisfactory levels of reliability and validity and might be useful for research and clinical purposes. In conclusion, the inclusion of the forensic modes in this version makes the inventory more comprehensive in reflecting recent developments in the Schema Therapy Model. Background: Post severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI), axonal alterations lead to myelin loss and its degeneration. In the recovery phase, numerous intermingled biochemical pathways involving complex inflammatory reactions cloud the understanding of this yet undiscerned process that also varies with agonal period. In cases with dubious histories, approximating the survival time can be challenging, and expression levels of characteristic markers may aid forensic experts in the same. Methods: This exploratory study recruited 100 samples—68 sTBI, 22 non-TBI and 10 age- and sex-matched control samples. Male:female ratio was 87:13. Histochemical staining using H&E was used to characterize myelination pattern, and IHC of GFAP and CD-68 were performed to assess astroglial and microglial reactions with respect to survival time in specific sites. Result: Among sTBI, non-TBI and control recruits, sTBI patients depicted significant myelination abnormalities, astroglial proliferation and microglial reaction and varying with survival time. Non-TBI and control samples depicted nearly similar profiles. Conclusion: In order to untangle the complex mesh of biochemical responses, nuanced research on individual factors (both pre- and post mortem) with regard to specific site and survival time are warranted. Recovery from serious mental illness (SMI) is recognized as involving the development of a coherent and compassionate understanding of oneself and one's place in the world. For many reasons this may be an unusually daunting task in a maximum security prison, particularly in solitary confinement. For the incarcerated person who experiences psychosis and other severe emotional difficulties, to the extent that SMI is an experience of fragmentation, loss of agency, and loss of a sense of belonging to the human community, these things are amplified by the very experience of incarceration. In this paper we explored the general and specific tasks that psychotherapy in these settings should address if promoting subjective recovery is to be a key objective. After reviewing emerging literature on metacognition as a set of processes which underlie recovery from SMI, we have suggested that psychotherapy in highly restrictive correctional settings may promote subjective recovery to the extent that, sensitive to persons' metacognitive capacities, psychotherapy helps persons with SMI to form more coherent accounts of their challenges and possibilities and decide how to respond to them. We then suggested that in these types of forensic settings there may be very specific tasks for psychotherapists. These include establishing psychotherapy as a space in which meaning can jointly be made of the person's experience within prison, including their experiences and responses to the challenges of prison, as something that falls along the continuum of what can be made sense of within the context of their larger life. Rationale: Isotonitazene is an illicit synthetic opioid associated with many intoxications and fatalities. Recent studies show that isotonitazene is a potent µ-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist in vitro, but little information is available about its in vivo effects. Objectives: The aims of the present study were to investigate the pharmacokinetics of isotonitazene in rats, and relate pharmacokinetic parameters to pharmacodynamic effects. Methods: Isotonitazene and its metabolites were identified and quantified by liquid chromatography tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-QQQ-MS). Male Sprague–Dawley rats with jugular catheters and subcutaneous (s.c.) temperature transponders received isotonitazene (3, 10, 30 µg/kg, s.c.) or its vehicle. Blood samples were drawn at 15, 30, 60, 120, and 240 min post-injection, and plasma was assayed using LC-QQQ-MS. At each blood draw, body temperature, catalepsy scores, and hot plate latencies were recorded. Results: Maximum plasma concentrations of isotonitazene rose in parallel with increasing dose (range 0.2–9.8 ng/mL) and half-life ranged from 23.4 to 63.3 min. The metabolites 4′-hydroxy nitazene and N-desethyl isotonitazene were detected, and plasma concentrations were below the limit of quantitation (0.5 ng/mL) but above the limit of detection (0.1 ng/mL). Isotonitazene produced antinociception (ED50 = 4.22 µg/kg), catalepsy-like symptoms (ED50 = 8.68 µg/kg), and hypothermia (only at 30 µg/kg) that were significantly correlated with concentrations of isotonitazene. Radioligand binding in rat brain tissue revealed that isotonitazene displays nM affinity for MOR (Ki = 15.8 nM), while the N-desethyl metabolite shows even greater affinity (Ki = 2.2 nM). Conclusions: In summary, isotonitazene is a potent MOR agonist whose pharmacodynamic effects are related to circulating concentrations of the parent drug. Purpose: Fatal neonatal pneumothorax is often described in the literature as a consequence of prematurity and respiratory distress syndrome, pulmonary congenital anomalies, artificial ventilation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Methods: Forensically clinical commentaries of the letal complications in perinatal malpractices. Results: After an orderly term delivery in a 31.- year old tercipara, the newborn developed a clinical sign of meconium aspiration syndrome, for which he was primarily resuscitated with an APGAR score of 3,5,6. In the neonatology department, one hour after delivery, severe generalized emphysema and massive air embolism developed with bilateral pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, pneumopericardium and pneumoperitoneum, as well as cardiac arrest and death. A direct connection between the oxygen supply pipe and the endotracheal tube was found with the consequent continuous overpressure and hyperoxygenation as the cause of the above pathological conditions, which were confirmed by autopsy with a massive air embolism. Conclusion: For a forensic-clinical discussion, I consider this rare presentation of a massive lethal air plurifocal embolism to be a necessary contribution to the understanding of professional, educational and organizational communication failure. Alveolar overdistension with hyperinflation of oxygen led to imposibility of spontaneous and assisted ventilation, massive air embolism and consequent complications that led to death without response to resuscitation measures. Background: Postmortem computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging have been gradually introduced to forensic pathology centres over the past two decades, with varying results in comparison to autopsy. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of postmortem CT in determining a cause of death in children who died of unnatural causes. Materials and methods: This was a prospective recruitment of 30 children (< 18 years) who underwent postmortem CT and a forensic autopsy. A cause of death was independently assigned by two experienced paediatric radiologists and compared to that of the forensic autopsy. Results: A correct cause of death was assigned by reviewers 1 and 2 in 70% (n = 21/30) and 67% (n = 20/30) of cases, respectively. For gunshot injuries and blunt force head injuries, there was 91% (n = 10/11) and 100% (n = 6/6) agreement between forensic autopsy and both reviewers, respectively. No cause of death could be assigned by reviewers 1 and 2 in 27% (n = 8) and 30% (n = 9) of cases, respectively. An incorrect cause of death was assigned by both reviewers in one case (3%). The Cohen Kappa level of agreement between the forensic autopsy and reviewers 1 and 2 was k = 0.624 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.45–0.80, P = 0) and k = 0.582 (95% CI 0.41–0.76, P = 0), respectively. There was near perfect agreement between reviewers 1 and 2 (k = 0.905) (95% CI 0.78–1.00, P = 0). Conclusion: Postmortem CT has good diagnostic accuracy for identifying a cause of death related to trauma, but it has poor accuracy for children dying from causes not associated with apparent physical injury. Contemporaneous assessment of testamentary capacity (TC) is a well-established professional activity for forensic clinicians. However, important assessment issues exist in this area that remain unsettled or controversial. Three topical TC assessment issues were identified from a review of forensic literature and the author's personal experience as an expert witness: (1) whether neuropsychological testing is a necessary component in contemporaneous forensic assessments of TC, (2) whether clinicians are able to conduct contemporaneous assessments of TC in patients with aphasia, and (3) whether clinicians should video record their TC assessments. The paper presents each issue and related literature, provides views of the field (where available), offers the author's viewpoint and conclusions, and makes recommendations for future research. The paper concludes that (1) neuropsychological assessment currently is a very helpful addition but not a required component of the contemporaneous assessment of TC, but may become essential with the advent of TC-specific neuropsychological measures; (2) contemporaneous assessment of TC is feasible in patients with mild aphasia, but becomes increasingly challenging and problematic in patients with more severe aphasia; and (3) whether to video record a TC assessment is an attorney and not a clinician decision. Contemporary criminal investigations are based on the statements made by the victim and the eyewitnesses. They also rely on the physical evidences found in the crime scene. These evidences, and more particularly biological ones, have a great judicial value in the courtroom. They are usually used to revoke the suspect's allegations and confirm or refute the statements made by the victim and the witnesses. Stains of body fluids are biological evidences highly sought by forensic investigators. In many criminal cases, the success of the investigation relies on the correct identification and classification of these stains. Therefore, the adoption of reliable and accurate forensic analytical methods seems to be of vital importance to attain this objective. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is a modern and universal analytical technique capable of fingerprint recognition of the analyte using minimal amount of the test sample. The current systematic review aims to through light on the fundamentals of this technique and to illustrate its wide range of applications in forensic investigations. ATR-FTIR is a nondestructive technique which has demonstrated an exceptional efficiency in detecting, identifying and discriminating between stains of various types of body fluids usually encountered in crime scenes. The ATR-FTIR spectral data generated from bloodstains can be used to deduce a wealth of information related to the donor species, age, gender, and race. These data can also be exploited to discriminate between stains of different types of bloods including menstrual and peripheral bloods. In addition, ATR-FTIR has a great utility in the postmortem investigations. More particularly, in estimating the postmortem interval and diagnosing death caused by extreme weather conditions. Cases of suicidal hanging are a common death referred for medico-legal autopsy throughout the world. Although some advocate using postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) without traditional invasive autopsy (TIA) to investigate such deaths, others reject this approach. There is currently limited evidence to guide practice. In this context, the TIA reports and PMCT images of 50 cases of suspected suicidal hanging during an 11-month period were reviewed. The reviewers were blinded to the findings of the other modality. A Cohen's Kappa coefficient (K) was calculated to assess agreement between TIA and PMCT across a range of pertinent findings. This analysis demonstrated perfect agreement for identification of a ligature (K = 1.00) and a strong level of agreement for identification of a ligature suspension point (K = 0.832) but only a minimal level of agreement for overall ligature mark (K = 0.223). PMCT demonstrated a weak level of agreement for fractures of hyoid bone (K = 0.555) and thyroid cartilage (K = 0.538). Three probable fractures not identified at TIA were identified on PMCT. TIA was shown to be superior in the identification of intramuscular and laryngeal fracture–related haemorrhage/bruising whereas PMCT was superior to TIA in identifying body gas deposition. There was overall good correlation between the natural disease and trauma identified elsewhere in the body during the TIA and PMCT. The study demonstrates that PMCT can assist the investigation of suspected suicidal hangings. However, the accuracy of many findings is limited, and if it is used as an alternative to the TIA, potentially pertinent findings, such as fractures of the laryngeal cartilages, could be missed. Shoe prints are one of the most common types of evidence found at crime scenes, second only to fingerprints. However, studies involving modern approaches such as machine learning and deep learning for the detection and analysis of shoe prints are quite limited in this field. With advancements in technology, positive results have recently emerged for the detection of 2D shoe prints. However, few studies focusing on 3D shoe prints. This study aims to use deep learning methods, specifically the PointNet architecture, for binary classification applications of 3D shoe prints, utilizing two different shoe brands. A 3D dataset created from 160 pairs of shoes was employed for this research. This dataset comprises 797 images from the Adidas brand and 2445 images from the Nike brand. The dataset used in the study includes worn shoe prints. According to the results obtained, the training phase achieved an accuracy of 96%, and the validation phase achieved an accuracy of 93%. These study results are highly positive and indicate promising potential for classifying 3D shoe prints. This study is described as the first classification study conducted using a deep learning method specifically on 3D shoe prints. It provides proof of concept that deep learning research can be conducted on 3D shoeprints. While the developed binary classification of these 3D shoeprints may not fully meet current forensic needs, it will serve as a source of motivation for future research and for the creation of 3D datasets intended for forensic purposes. This article discusses the forensic evaluation of malpractice or complications in cases of early postpartum hemorrhage (PPPH). The main causes of malpractice identified in these cases include late recognition of PPPH, inadequate medical and surgical procedures, and inadequate substitution with blood products. Insufficient or inadequate medical documentation and organizational and communication problems were also found to contribute to these cases. The article emphasizes the importance of monitoring hemodynamic and clinical parameters, correctly diagnosing PPPH, and applying timely and rapid prophylaxis and treatment. The increase in cesarean sections is identified as a contributing factor to these complications. Certificates of medical evidence are often used to aid the court in assessing the cause and severity of a victim’s injuries. In cases with significant blood loss, the question whether the bleeding itself was life-threatening sometimes arises. To answer this, the volume classification of hypovolemic shock described in ATLS® is commonly used as an aid, where a relative blood loss > 30% is considered life-threatening. In a recent study of deaths due to internal haemorrhage, many cases had a relative blood loss < 30%. However, many included cases had injuries which could presumably cause deaths via other mechanisms, making the interpretation uncertain. To resolve remaining ambiguity, we studied whether deaths due to isolated liver lacerations had a relative blood loss < 30%, a cause of death where the mechanism of death is presumably exsanguination only. Using the National Board of Forensic Medicine autopsy database, we identified all adult decedents, who had undergone a medico-legal autopsy 2001–2021 (n = 105 952), where liver laceration was registered as the underlying cause of death (n = 102). Cases where death resulted from a combination of also other injuries (n = 79), and cases that had received hospital care, were excluded (n = 4), leaving 19 cases. The proportion of internal haemorrhage to calculated total blood volume in these fatal pure exsanguinations ranged from 12 to 52%, with 63% of cases having a proportion < 30%. Our results lend further support to the claim that the volume classification of hypovolemic shock described in ATLS® is inappropriate for assessing the degree of life-threatening haemorrhage in medico-legal cases. Vibrational spectroscopy is a powerful analytical domain, within which Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy stand as exemplars, offering high chemical specificity and sensitivity. These methodologies have been instrumental in the characterization of chemical compounds for an extensive period. They are particularly adept at the identification and analysis of minute sample quantities. Both FTIR and Raman spectroscopy are proficient in elucidating small liquid samples and detecting nuanced molecular alterations. The application of chemometrics further augments their analytical prowess. Currently, these techniques are in the research phase within forensic medicine and have yet to be broadly implemented in examination and identification processes. Nonetheless, studies have indicated that a combined classification model utilizing FTIR and Raman spectroscopy yields exceptional results for the identification of biological fluid-related information and the determination of causes of death. The objective of this review is to delineate the current research trajectory and potential applications of these two vibrational spectroscopic techniques in the detection of body fluids and the ascertainment of causes of death within the context of forensic medicine. Age-at-death estimation is an important issue in forensic medicine and anthropology. Initially, methods relied on morphological criteria, but with the advancement of radiology, new techniques such as morphological studies on multi-slice computed tomography (CT) reconstructions have emerged. Recent studies have shown promising results by investigating the correlation between age and bone mineral density (BMD). However, there is currently a lack of data on post-mortem CTs (PMCT) involving decomposed bodies, and limited information exists regarding changes in Hounsfield Units measurement in a post-mortem context. In light of these gaps, our study aimed to examine the relationship between age at death and pubic and ilium BMD using a sample of forensic bodies. We also aimed to determine whether post-mortem processes, such as putrefaction, could interfere with this correlation. Our retrospective analysis encompassed 637 PMCTs conducted before medicolegal autopsies at Tours University Hospital. Utilizing simple and multiple linear regressions, we investigated the correlation between age and pubic and ilium BMD, as well as the relationship between BMD and the radiologic alteration index (RAI), a scale employed to quantify the degree of putrefaction. Our findings indicate promising outcomes in age-at-death estimation using pubic and/or ilium BMD for bodies exhibiting no or moderate decomposition (RAI < 80), particularly among individuals under 40 years old. However, for highly decomposed corpses (RAI ≥ 80), the presence of gas infiltration significantly influences the BMD of both the ilium and pubis. Consequently, we advocate for the incorporation of the RAI score into the age estimation equation to enhance the accuracy of our results in such cases. The approach to postmortem computed tomography (CT) differs significantly from that of diagnostic CT in living patients. Elimination of artifacts such as noise and beam hardening as well as optimization of tissue contrast requires alteration of exposure parameters from protocols designed to limit radiation dose in children. Multiple scans may be performed, and detailed post-processing can be used to enhance subtle findings such as small intracranial extra axial collections and non-displaced fractures. This systematic review aimed to identify studies which validate structured instruments available for use as outcome measures in the child and adolescent forensic mental health service cohort and assess the quality of these studies.A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Studies were identified by searching six online databases in November 2023. The quality and risk of bias of each study meeting inclusion criteria was independently assessed by two authors using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. Results were synthesised narratively.A total of eight studies were identified which met inclusion criteria. These looked at six instruments which primarily focused on outcome measures in the areas of treatment motivation, level of functioning, psychiatric symptoms, care needs and response to social situations. Papers scored between 17/40 and 30/40 on the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. Studies were rated as low (n = 1), moderate (n = 6), high (n = 1) or very high quality (n = 0).Despite the large number of structured instruments potentially available, evidence for their use as outcome measures in child and adolescent forensic mental health services is limited. A 39-year-old woman who had undergone an uncomplicated elective cesarean section for a low-lying placenta collapsed and died the following day. At autopsy, there was dissection of an aneurysmally-dilated thoracic aorta with 400 mls of fluid and clotted blood in the pericardial sac. There were no features of Marfan syndrome or other connective tissue disorders. Histology revealed thinning of the aortic wall with fragmentation of elastic fibers and no inflammation. Vessels elsewhere were normal. This case demonstrates a rare complication of pregnancy that may not present until after delivery with unexpected collapse and sudden death. Predisposing factors include an increased cardiac output, reduction in systemic vascular resistance, an increase in left ventricular muscle mass, and alterations in serum progesterone and estrogen levels which may cause structural changes to the aortic wall. The following study was undertaken to determine if any specific occupant characteristics, crash factors, or associated injuries identified at autopsy could predict the occurrence or number of fractured ribs in adults. Data were accrued from the Traffic Accident Reporting System (TARS) and coronial autopsy reports from Forensic Science SA, Adelaide, South Australia, from January 2000 to December 2020. A total of 1475 motor vehicle fatalities were recorded in TARS between January 2000 and December 2020, and 1082 coronial autopsy reports were identified that corresponded to TARS fatal crash data. After applying exclusion criteria involving missing data, 874 cases were included in the analysis. Of the 874 cases, 685 cases had one or more rib fractures. The leading cause of death for those with rib fractures was multiple trauma (54%), followed by head injury (17%) and chest injuries (10%). The strongest predictor of one or more rib fractures was increasing age (p < 0.001). Other factors found in the regression to be predictive of the number of rib fractures were the presence of a variety of other injuries including thoracic spinal fracture, lower right extremity fracture, splenic injury, liver injury, pelvic fracture, aortic injury, lung laceration, and hemothorax. Age is most likely associated with increasing rib fractures due to reduced tolerance to chest deflection with greater injuries occurring at lower magnitudes of impact. To determine the role of cardiac disease in driver fatalities, a retrospective review of autopsy files at Forensic Science SA in Adelaide, Australia, was undertaken over a 13-year-period January 2005–December 2017 for individuals aged ≥ 40 years who had died while driving a motor vehicle. The incidence of significant coronary artery atherosclerosis (CAA) and cardiomegaly was evaluated with comparisons between drivers and a control group of passengers. Autopsy examinations were performed on 303 drivers and 72 passengers who died of trauma and on 63 drivers who died of a cardiac event while driving. The average age for drivers dying of trauma was 58.5 years (range 40–93 years) with 48 (15.8%) having CAA and 31 (10.2%) having cardiomegaly. This was not statistically different to passengers (aged 63.3 years; range 40–93 years; 20.8% having CAA; 11 (15.2%) cardiomegaly; (p > 0.2). Drivers with significant cardiac disease did not, therefore, have increased rates of death in crashes, although a distinct subgroup of drivers consisted of those who had died from cardiac events and not trauma, while driving. In Maltot (Normandy, France), one grave containing the remains of a German soldier, who died in 1944, was excavated amongst other graves and isolated elements. A dozen whole vials were unearthed, resulting in questions about their content. Various screenings were carried out on the contents of one single vial: HPLC–DAD and HR-LC–MS screening after 1/10 dilution in mobile phase, GC–MS and HS-GC–MS after 1/10 dilution in methanol, multi-element research by HR-ICP-MS after total mineralization, and cyanide analysis. Analyzed vial contained approximately 300 µL of a colorless, water-immiscible liquid with a characteristic solvent odor. HPLC–DAD, GC–MS, HR-LC–MS/MS, ICP-MS, and cyanide screenings were negative excluding the presence of cyanide, arsenic, barbiturates, amphetamines, or narcotics. HS-GC–MS analysis highlighted the presence of ethanol, chloroform, and diethyl ether at significant concentrations. Chloroform and diethyl ether were anesthetic products mainly reserved for urgent situations. We hypothesized that the soldier may have been a combat medic working on battlefields. as he was wounded, another possibility could be that he may have used the vials to relieve his pain; however, the immediate severity of the wounds drove us to assess the second hypothesis of delayed death as being less plausible. The high number of vials containing ethanol, chloroform, and diethyl ether, and the massive blood loss leading to quick death led us to support the combat medic or paramedic hypothesis.
