In the paper Targino (Outer Lipschitz Geometry of Complex Algebraic Plane Curves. International Mathematics Research Notices, rnac202. https://doi.org/10.1093/imrn/rnac202, 2022) Renato Targino shows that bi-Lipschitz type of a plane curve is determined by the local ambient topological properties of curves. Here we show that it is no longer true in higher dimensions. However we show that the bi-Lipschitz type of space curves is determined by the number of singular points and by the local ambient topological type of a generic projection of such curves into the affine plane. In the present work, we present normative data for a set of 39 original clipart-style images that can be used as material in studies involving judgements of proportion. The original images are drawings that depict different day-to-day scenarios (e.g., lighted windows in a building; books on a shelf) and each has seven variants of different proportions (from 20% to 80%) belonging to different categories (discrete vs continuous; social vs non-social; natural vs artificial; stimuli physical dimensions; number of referents). Normative data for these images are presented in an interactive database (available at https://judgment-images-and-norms.shinyapps.io/estimates%5finteractive/), corresponding to the means of proportion estimates (in percentage form), the perceived ease of making such estimates, the perceived level of familiarity and liking for each image, and the relationships between these variables. In the paper, we analyse the data at an individual level, addressing how the latter judgements are related to the proportion estimates, how those estimates are related to objective proportions, and how these relationships are moderated by image category. The analyses presented in this paper aim to aid readers in selecting images that enable them to better address specific influences on proportional estimates or to control for those influences in their studies. - Abstract
Deontic norms are expected to impose individuals' control over their behavior. In this paper, we address such norms presented in traffic signs and test their influence over executive control functions. For Experiment 1, we develop a traffic flanker task in which the typical neutral arrows are replaced with traffic prohibition/obligation signs. Experiment 2 isolated the deontic aspect of the signs using simple arrows on red, blue, and green backgrounds and either primed them to be interpreted as traffic signs or as elements of a gaming console controller. Results in both studies show evidence of controlling context interferences more efficiently when dealing with deontic (traffic) signs than with simple arrows (Experiment 1) or with similar perceptive targets when primed with a deontic context than with a gaming context (Experiment 2). In both studies, obligation/blue signs mitigate flanker effects less than prohibition/red signs. Stimuli color affects the alertness of the cognitive system, with the color red being, by itself, a cue for increased control. Based on temporal analysis, we further discuss these results as evidence of an increase in proactive control that aims to prevent the occurrence of undesirable influence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the study is to describe the experience of a multidisciplinary team in a tertiary hospital regarding the management of Infantile Hemangiomas (IH). The method employed is a retrospective analysis of patients with IH followed in a tertiary pediatric hospital between January 2010 and May 2022. A total of 393 IH were diagnosed (56.7% female), with a median age of 5 months (interquartile range (IQR), 3–10). Imaging investigation was necessary for diagnosis and for exclusion of other IH in 9.2% and 14.3%, respectively. Focal (74.0%) and superficial (59.7%) lesions were more frequent as was facial location (35.9%). Pre-treatment ulceration or hemorrhage occurred in 6.6%. At follow-up, 87.4% regressed partially and 12.6% completely; 2.7% relapsed. Propranolol was started in 30.0% of cases for a median period of 9 months (IQR, 6–12), mainly due to esthetic concerns (41.9%). Side effects occurred in 8.3% (sleep disturbance in 5.1%). Only 1.7% were refractory and 5.9% had a rebound effect. Eleven patients were treated with topical timolol and 41 underwent surgery. Patients that were treated with propranolol had more risk factors (p = 0.016) and presented deeper lesions (p < 0.001) with a larger diameter (p < 0.001); total IH regression was less frequent (p < 0.001). Since 2020, twice-daily dosage was more frequently prescribed than three times daily (p = 0.007) and inpatient initiation of propranolol decreased (p = 0.750), without significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions, duration of treatment, and lesion evolution. Conclusions: Our protocol proved to be safe and feasible in an outpatient setting and twice daily administration of propranolol was effective. The majority of IH showed at least partial regression. Early detection of high-risk IH is paramount and a multidisciplinary assessment by a specialized team is essential for adequate management. What is Known: • IH are the most common vascular tumors in childhood. Although the majority evolves favorably, treatment may be warranted in selected cases. • Early detection of high-risk IH is paramount, and a multidisciplinary assessment by a specialized team is essential for adequate management. What is New: • One-third of our sample was treated with propranolol. These patients had more risk factors and presented deeper lesions with a larger diameter, and tumor total regression was less frequent. • Our results reinforce safety and feasibility of propranolol initiation in an outpatient setting, including twice daily dosage. CURRENT distribution ,BATS - Abstract
We report the bat falcon Falco rufigularis Daudin, 1800 for the first time in the state of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, in the municipality of Serra Talhada in the Caatinga, in May 2021. In addition to this photo-documented record, we modeled the potential distribution of this falcon to better understand current distribution limits and how they might be influenced by climate change in the near-future. Presence and climate-based maximum entropy models were used to predict the potential distribution of the falcon in South America, at present and in the future (2070). This record is possibly the easternmost record for the falcon and first for the central Caatinga. Models indicate that the species should be found in areas where it has not yet been reported, and suggest that over the next fifty years the bat falcon will expand its distribution. Here, we suggest that the falcon is increasing its geographical distribution in the Caatinga, or it has simply remained unreported from these places where it may already be found. The aim of the study was to describe neurological manifestations in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) in the first 2 years of age. In this prospective observational study, children with CZS treated at a university hospital received a neurological assessment and were evaluated using two neurodevelopmental scales (the Denver II test and the assessment of gross motor development of the World Health Organization) by a pediatric neurologist on admission to the study and at 4, 8, 12, 18, and 24 months of age. The data collected were stored in Microsoft Excel version 14.6.3. Thirty-eight children (27 males and 11 females; a median age of 4.3 months (interquartile range (IQR): 1.6–11.4)) with CZS were evaluated. Irritability was present in 50% and 27% of the children at 8 months and 24 months, respectively. Axial hypertonia was highly prevalent at 4 months (77%), with a decrease to 50% at 24 months. At all ages, spastic tetraparesis was the most common motor abnormality (> 80%). Twenty-seven (71%) participants were diagnosed with epilepsy, and the median age at seizure onset was 6 months (IQR: 3.5–8). The most frequent types of seizures were focal seizures and spasms, with spasms being the most frequent in the first year of life (52%) and focal crises being the most frequent in the second year of life (50%). Conclusion: This study allowed observation of neurological abnormalities over time, the evolution of epileptic manifestations, and recognition of new patterns of clinical neurological abnormalities, helping clinicians to recognize CZS earlier, minimizing the impact of new outbreaks. What is Known: • Clinical patterns of SZC patients at pre-established ages or date of data collection • More frequent studies with data collection of clinical-radiological features of patient's over his first year of life What is New: • Comprehensive clinical neurological progression data regarding CZS in the first 2 years of life, recognizing patterns • Hypothesis including a new CZS spectrum with milder clinical-radiological features [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EMOTION recognition ,FACIAL expression ,EMOTIONS ,SELF-expression ,EXECUTIVE function ,ANGER management ,ATTENTIONAL bias - Abstract
Assuming the importance of a social dimension in appraisal of emotion, here we investigate how social presence impact emotional interference effects. This modulation is hypothesized both because social presence is expected to facilitate emotion recognition and to increases executive control functions. In one experiment participants perform two different emotional Stroop tasks that use either emotional words or emotional facial expressions as targets versus distractors, either in a co-action or in an isolated setting. Results show that the social presence reduces interference effects. However the evidence of increases of control in presence of others is less clear when the distractor is an emotional face (versus an emotional word) and this happens particularly for angry expressions. Faces and the expression of emotional anger attentional capture seem not to be overcome by an increase of control promoted by the presence of others, suggesting the higher relevance of these stimuli in social settings. SEMIALGEBRAIC sets - Abstract
Let X be a closed semialgebraic set of dimension k. If n ≥ 2 k + 1 , then there is a bi-Lipschitz and semialgebraic embedding of X into R n . Moreover, if n ≥ 2 k + 2 , then this embedding is unique (up to a bi-Lipschitz and semialgebraic homeomorphism of R n ). We also give local and complex algebraic counterparts of these results. We address here the question of the bi-Lipschitz local triviality of a complex polynomial function over a complex value. Our main result states that a non constant complex polynomial admits a locally bi-Lipschitz trivial value if and only if it is a polynomial in one complex variable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We prove that any complex analytic set in C n which is Lipschitz normally embedded at infinity and has tangent cone at infinity that is a linear subspace of C n must be an affine linear subspace of C n itself. No restrictions on the singular set, dimension nor codimension are required. In particular, any complex algebraic set in C n which is Lipschitz regular at infinity is an affine linear subspace. WIND power ,DYNAMIC programming ,COST functions - Abstract
This paper presents a modified stochastic dual dynamic programming methodology in order to include the wind energy scenarios in the mid-term hydrothermal systems operation planning with an hourly representation of the demand. As the wind power intermittence adds more complexity for this class of problem, the conventional stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) is not suitable to solve it due the excessive computational effort. Then the proposed approach includes in a conventional SDDP an analytical representation of immediate cost function for each stage and inflow/wind scenarios. Analysis results considering different cases of the South Brazilian system will be used to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. Choking Horns in Lipschitz Geometry of Complex Algebraic Varieties. Appendix by Walter D. Neumann.

- Abstract
The paper studies the Lipschitz geometry of germs of complex algebraic varieties and introduces the notion of a choking horn. A choking horn is a family of cycles on an algebraic variety with the property that the cycles cannot be boundaries of nearby chains. The presence of choking horns is an obstruction to metric conicalness and the authors use this to prove that some classical isolated hypersurface singularities are not metrically conical. They also show that there exist countably infinitely many singular varieties, which are locally homeomorphic, but not locally subanalytically bi-Lipschitz equivalent with respect to the inner metric. The Appendix by W. Neumann uses separating sets to provide another example of the same phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This study aimed to assess and compare the growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass traits of Pantaneiro sheep and their Texel and Santa Inês crossbreds. Ninety-six lambs, fifty-one males, and forty-five females, with a mean weaning weight of 15.21 ± 1.25 kg and 78 ± 13 days of age, were slaughtered at a 32-kg body weight. The results showed better production efficiency from males compared with females. Texel-crossed lambs had a better growth performance than the other genotypes. The Texel × Pantaneiro lambs were more efficient with a better feedlot performance, higher ribeye muscle area, and better carcass characteristics with an adequate amount of fat cover. Pantaneiro lambs and their crosses with meat breeds could be useful in meat production systems under Savanna environmental conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OCEANOGRAPHY ,CONTINENTAL shelf ,PHYTOPLANKTON ,DINOFLAGELLATES ,DIATOMS - Abstract
Given the heterogeneous oceanographic conditions observed in the continental shelf and slope off Rio de Janeiro, the phytoplankton community is expected to adapt to the diverse trophic conditions using distinct strategies. Considering the C-S-R triangle, distinct phytoplankton taxa are expected to occur in Tropical Water (TW), in South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) and in Coastal Water (CW). The study area extends from Paraíba do Sul River mouth to the region of Cabo Frio. Samples were collected on 28 stations, in 2011 austral summer. 209 phytoplankton taxa were observed, mainly dinoflagellates (93), diatoms (71), and coccolitophores (30). TW dominated the surface waters of the continental shelf and slope, and a typical tropical phytoplankton community, composed by stress-tolerant taxa, was observed. The rise in nitrate concentration caused by SACW uplift in the shelf and in the continental slope, at subsurface waters, and in silicate, associated with the Paraíba do Sul riverine plume, led to shifts in the phytoplankton community, increasing the contribution of ruderal taxa. The grouping of phytoplankton assemblages only in traditional groups would result in loss of information about the factors that determine community dynamics since the different species in each of these groups frequently share specific traits. The region recognized as the Rondônia area of endemism is one of the most threatened in the Brazilian Amazon. In addition to rampant deforestation that took place during the 1980s and 1990s, it is now the locus of infrastructure development and economic expansion. However, the patterns of species distribution and diversity in this region are much more complex than previously recognized. Patterns of distribution of birds, primates, and butterflies strongly suggest that the Rondônia area of endemism is not biogeographically homogenous. On opposite banks of the Madeira tributaries, in particular the Aripuanã and Jiparaná rivers, there are genetically, morphologically, and vocally distinct bird populations with restricted distributions and geographic substitution. These areas are relatively small and already highly threatened by deforestation and economic development. Up to 70 % of the Jiparaná basin has been deprived of its original forest cover. Thus, their unique populations deserve to be recognized as conservation priorities and urgently included in conservation planning blueprints. Many restricted taxa, including many yet to be described, may already be highly endangered or locally extinct. Conservation planning in the Brazilian Amazon directed at specifying areas to be protected has focused on the larger proposed areas of endemism. If fine-scale endemism in threatened areas does exist in other Amazonian regions, then conservation policies that do not recognize these patterns will not adequately protect regional diversity. n explanation is given for the initially surprising ubiquity of separating sets in normal complex surface germs. It is shown that they are quite common in higher dimensions too. The relationship between separating sets and the geometry of the metric tangent cone of Bernig and Lytchak is described. Moreover, separating sets are used to show that the inner Lipschitz type need not be constant in a family of normal complex surface germs of constant topology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
