Understanding how and why science works is a major goal of science education. The aim of this article is to analyze the influence of a research experience in real science contexts, in the thinking and practice of preservice elementary teachers regarding inquiry and nature of science teaching. An in-depth case study which highlights the affordances and shortcomings of the participants' immersion in real science contexts and in seminars and its impact on participants' thoughts and practices of nature of science and inquiry will be presented. Interviews, observations, diaries, and videotaped seminars were used for data collection. Our findings suggest that the research experience, as well as moments of reflection, contributed to enhance the relevance of an inquiry-based teaching and teaching about NOS in the participants' discourse. However, the implementation of these classroom practices was limited and seemingly prevented due to various constraints, namely the initial teacher training, participants' lack of teaching experience, and those associated with elementary students and the curriculum. Purpose: A clinicopathological classification has been designed to predict recurrence/progression in patients with pituitary adenomas (PAs). We aimed to study its usefulness in predicting PAs that will have a challenging disease course and may require more often complex multimodal and multiple therapeutic approaches. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 129 patients with PAs operated in our institution between 2001 and 2020 (84 non-clinically functioning PAs, 32 acromegaly, 9 Cushing's disease, 2 prolactinomas and 2 thyrotropinomas). Grading was based on invasion and proliferation: 1a (non-invasive, non-proliferative; n = 59), 1b (non-invasive, proliferative; n = 17), 2a (invasive, non-proliferative; n = 38), and 2b (invasive, proliferative; n = 15). Results: Of the 129 patients, 68 (52.7%) were females, and the mean age at diagnosis was 53.7 ± 15.4 years. The mean follow-up duration was 93.1 ± 61.8 months. Grade 2b PAs when compared to other grades (2b-2a-1b-1a) had significantly higher rates of persistent tumor remnant within 1-year after operation (93–78-18–30%; p < 0.001), active disease at last follow-up (40–27-12–10%; p = 0.004), re-operation (27–16-0–5%; p = 0.023), irradiation (53–38-12–7%; p < 0.001), multimodal treatment (67–49-18–25%; p = 0.003), multiple treatment (33–27-6–9%; p = 0.017). Patients with grade 2b PAs also required a higher mean number of treatments (2.6–2.1–1.2–1.4; p < 0.001). Conclusions: This clinicopathological classification appears to be a useful grading system to identify PAs that may be more refractory and more often require complex multimodal and multiple therapeutic approaches. Invasive PAs, especially grade 2b tumors, may be more likely to need complex treatment approach, including radiotherapy, and may display higher rates of active disease at last follow-up, despite receiving higher number of treatments. The microenvironment of pituitary adenomas (PAs) includes a range of non-tumoral cells, such as immune and stromal cells, as well as cell signaling molecules such as cytokines, chemokines and growth factors, which surround pituitary tumor cells and may modulate tumor initiation, progression, invasion, angiogenesis and other tumorigenic processes. The microenvironment of PAs has been actively investigated over the last years, with several immune and stromal cell populations, as well as different cytokines, chemokines and growth factors being recently characterized in PAs. Moreover, key microenvironment-related genes as well as immune-related molecules and pathways have been investigated, with immune check point regulators emerging as promising targets for immunotherapy. Understanding the microenvironment of PAs will contribute to a deeper knowledge of the complex biology of PAs, as well as will provide developments in terms of diagnosis, clinical management and ultimately treatment of patients with aggressive and/or refractory PAs. Purpose: Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor in the adult, whose grim prognosis largely relates to the absence of effective treatment targets. Given its success in other cancers, immunotherapy has been trialed in glioblastoma and failed to demonstrate the expected benefit. Importantly, these disappointing results highlight the importance of understanding the unique and transforming biology of glioblastoma and its microenvironment. Our goal was to evaluate and characterize the expression of PD-L1 through immunohistochemistry in a large glioblastoma cohort. We further studied PD-L1 expression-associated prognosis and its correlation to systemic and neuropathological parameters. Methods: A series of 352 glioblastoma specimens (313 initial resection, 39 matched recurrences) was collected, with a detailed characterization of tumor neuropathological characteristics, including the presence, density and location of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL). Two hematological markers, absolute lymphocyte count and neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), were used to analyze and correlate with systemic inflammation and immunosuppression. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate PD-L1 expression. Results: Membranous PD-L1 expression was identified in 31% (98/313) of newly diagnosed and 46% (18/39) of matched recurrent tumors. TIL were found in 26% (82/313) of primary tumors and both density and location were found to be significantly associated with PD-L1 expression (p < 0.001). Interestingly, PD-L1 expressing tumors had more frequently areas with sarcomatous differentiation (p < 0.001) and were significantly associated with lower lymphocyte count (p = 0.018) and higher NLR ratio (p = 0.004) upon diagnosis. Importantly, PD-L1 expression was an independent poor prognostic marker in our cohort. Conclusion: Taken together, our data points to a putative role for PD-L1 expression in glioblastoma biology, which correlates to poor patient overall survival, as well as with a general systemic inflammatory status and immunosuppression. Introduction: Despite being the second most frequent tumor in children, pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors are rare, and the published European epidemiological data is limited. Our goal is to present the first surgical series of pediatric CNS tumors in Portugal and to review other similar worldwide series. Methods: Retrospective review of all patients younger than 19 years old, operated to a CNS tumor in the Neurosurgery Department at Hospital de Santa Maria (Lisbon, Portugal) between January 2004 and December 2014. Demographic data, tumor location, clinical data, histopathology, and surgical treatment were analyzed and compared to surgical series of pediatric CNS tumors published in PubMed indexed journals over the last 20 years. Results: We performed 253 surgeries in 215 patients, with a male:female ratio of 1.2:1 and a mean age of 9.2 years old. Primary brain tumors accounted for 95 % of all tumors and had more often a supratentorial location. Tumors of neuroepithelial tissue, particularly astrocytic tumors, embryonal tumors, neuronal and mixed neuronal-glial tumors, and oligodendrogliomas accounted for 81 % of cases. A gross-total resection was achieved in most cases. There was no mortality, and the overall morbidity was low. Conclusions: The demography, topography, and clinical presentation of the tumors and the surgical results of this series are comparable to other European ones. We found a higher incidence of neuronal and mixed neuronal-glial tumors and oligodendrogliomas and a slight lower incidence of ependymomas. The activities presented in this paper, which are addressed to elementary school, are focused on the pioneering work of the Portuguese King Carlos I in oceanography and involve the exploration of the exhibits belonging to two different science museums, the Aquarium Vasco da Gama and the Maritime Museum. Students were asked to study fish adaptations to deep sea, through the exploration of a fictional story, based on historical data and based on the work of the King that served as a guiding script for all the subsequent tasks. In both museums, students had access to: historical collections of organisms, oceanographic biological sampling instruments, fish gears and ships. They could also observe the characteristics and adaptations of diverse fish species characteristic of deep sea. The present study aimed to analyse the impact of these activities on students' scientific knowledge, on their understanding of the nature of science and on the development of transversal skills. All students considered the project very popular. The results obtained suggest that the activity promoted not only the understanding of scientific concepts, but also stimulated the development of knowledge about science itself and the construction of scientific knowledge, stressing the relevance of creating activities informed by the history of science. As a final remark we suggest that the partnership between elementary schools and museums should be seen as an educational project, in which the teacher has to assume a key mediating role between the school and the museums. This forum article consists on a commentary on the article by Alandeom W. Oliveira, Patterson Rogers, Cassie F. Quigley, Denis Samburskiy, Kimberly Barss and Seema Rivera. The authors emphasized the need for environmental teachers to expand the focus of their instructional efforts beyond rational argumentation and reasoning, taking into account the complex emotional aspects of the human relationship with nature. In this commentary, I attempt to extend the conversation regarding these issues to the need for teachers to be aware about their own environmental beliefs, which could be guiding their teaching. I close with a consideration for the need for environmental teachers to be reflective practitioners, using reflection upon the ends of education, their environmental values and ideas and the moral and ethical aspects of teaching, for challenging students' beliefs and empowering them to make informed environmental decisions, contributing thereby to the building of more just and environmental sustained societies. This study aims to evaluate and correlate the vascular, sensory and motor components related to the plantar surface in individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. 68 patients were categorized into two groups: 28 in the neuropathic group and 40 in the control group. In each patient, we assessed: circulation and peripheral perfusion of the lower limbs; somatosensory sensitivity; ankle muscle strength; and pressure on the plantar surface in static, dynamic and gait states. We used the Mann-Whitney test and analysis of variance (ANOVA and MANOVA) for comparison between groups, and performed Pearson and Spearman linear correlations amongst the variables ( P < 0.05). The somatosensory sensitivity, peripheral circulation and ankle muscle strength were reduced in the neuropathic group. In full peak plantar pressures, no differences were seen between groups, but differences did appear when the foot surface was divided into regions (forefoot, midfoot and hindfoot). In the static condition, the plantar surface area was greater in the neuropathic group. In the dynamic state, peak pressures in the neuropathic group, were higher in the forefoot and lower in the hindfoot, as well as lower in the hindfoot during gait. There were positive or negative correlations between the sensitivity deficit, dorsal ankle flexor strength, plantar surface area, and peak pressure by plantar region. Living in an unpredictable and ever changing society demands from its' citizens the development of complex competencies that challenges school, education and curriculum. PARSEL, a pan-European Project related to science education, emerges as a contribution to curricular development as it proposes a set of teaching-learning materials (modules) in order to make science classes more popular and relevant in the eyes of the students and as such to increase their interest with school science. The goal of this study was to understand how students evaluate those innovative modules. This paper presents data concerning 134 secondary students, collected through interviews, questionnaires and written documents. A quantitative analysis of the data collected through questionnaires was complemented by a qualitative analysis of the data collected by interviews and written documents. Results show that understanding the relationship between science and daily life, participating in practical activities based on problem solving and developing critical thinking and reasoning were the issues most valued by students. The activities presented in this paper are part of a wider project that investigates the effects of infusing the history of science in science teaching, toward students' learning and attitude. Focused on the work of D. Carlos de Bragança, King of Portugal from 1889 to 1908, and a pioneer oceanographer, the activities are addressed at the secondary Biology curriculum (grade 10, ages 15, 16). The proposed activities include a pre-visit orientation task, two workshops performed in a science museum and a follow-up learning task. In class, students have to analyse original historical excerpts of the king's work, in order to discuss and reflect about the nature of science. In the museum, students actively participate in two workshops: biological classification and specimen drawing. All students considered the project relevant for science learning, stating that it was important not only for knowledge acquisition but also for the understanding of the nature of science. As a final remark we stress the importance of creating activities informed by the history of science as a foundation for improving motivation, sustaining effective science teaching and meaningful science learning, and as a vehicle to promote a closer partnership between schools and science museums. In this paper we review the temporal patterns of variation of rocky intertidal resident fish assemblages and discuss possible mechanisms that may explain these patterns. These assemblages tend to be highly resilient and stable on an inter-annual basis, but tend to undergo marked seasonal fluctuations, as different species recruit and reach different phases of their life cycles. Larval supply is usually not a limiting factor suggesting that post-recruitment deterministic mechanisms exert a strong influence on assemblage organization. At methodological level, it is argued that traditional destructive sampling techniques should be avoided whenever possible. It is proposed that a deeper understanding of these assemblages requires more detailed information on intraspecific interactions between members of each constituent species, and information on the interactions between limited numbers of species for which mutually influences are particularly strong. It is argued that size, topography and biotic cover of a pool may provide a limited number of favourable sites for fishes of a given species and class size so that intraspecific competition, and possibly predation of the individuals less able to get access to best sites, may explain to a considerable extent the inter-annual stability and resilience of these assemblages. In this study we investigated the relationships between dominance rank and access to shelters in captive groups of Lipophrys pholis and Coryphoblennius galerita, as well as the effects of group size and shelter availability. Dominance rank was strongly correlated with size in juvenile L. pholis and with sex and size in adult C. galerita, males being dominant over females of similar size. Access to shelters was significantly correlated with dominance rank. For both species, most interactions occurred out of shelters. Direct disputes over shelters were always initiated by the dominant fish and the initiator was always the winner. The rate of aggression per fish per unit time decreased with an increase in the number of fish in L. pholis but not in C. galerita. No significant differences were found in groups differing in the number of shelters. C. galerita showed a higher rate of agonistic interactions and a higher proportion of overt aggression than L. pholis. It is suggested that one of the functions of agonistic interactions in these fishes is the control of a set of shelters, in the network of pathways used by each individual within its home range, minimising the time required to hide in case of danger.
