Purpose: There is currently a heightened need for perinatal medical services to timely recognize and accurately meet the psychological needs of pregnant women. Psychological disturbances a mother experiences during pregnancy, such as depression and anxiety, can be later associated with inadequate maternal capacity for antenatal care for herself and the baby, and may lead to subsequent mental health problems later in the mother's life. Routine prenatal assessment could significantly benefit from being proactively enriched with early prevention mental health screening tools to assess, appropriately manage vulnerable populations, and subsequently implement preventive actions. Methods: 178 pregnant women, under routine prenatal medical assessment, were measured regarding depressive symptomatology and stress, through the use of two validated psychometric tools (the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14)). Results: Heightened perceived stress and depressive symptomatology levels were associated with younger maternal age, an obstetrical record of more than one births and a history of abortion. Results additionally showed a connection between the requirement for a psychiatric referral—based on the levels of symptomatology recorded through the psychometric assessment and a clinical interview—and currently running the earlier stages (weeks) of pregnancy. Conclusion: Our revised proposed prenatal screening protocol for depression and stress suggests an amplified follow-up assessment including all pregnant women scoring high in both depression and in perceived stress, regardless of previous history of prenatal depression or of suicidality, to detect earlier or less manifest expressions of distress during pregnancy, in vulnerable perinatal populations. Background: Prenatal depression is associated with adverse health outcomes for both mothers and their children. The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has presented new risks and challenges for expectant mothers. The aims of the study were to investigate the underlying mechanism between COVID-19 risk perception of Chinese pregnant women and their prenatal depressive symptoms and potential protective factors such as family sense of coherence (FSOC). Method: A total of 181 Chinese pregnant women (Mage = 31.40 years, SD = 3.67, ranged from 23 to 43) participated in an online survey from April 22 to May 16, 2020. Risk perception and negative emotions (fear and anxiety) related with COVID-19, FSOC, and prenatal depressive symptoms were assessed. Results: The experience of maternal COVID-19 related negative emotion fully mediated the positive relationship between COVID-19 risk perception and prenatal depressive symptoms of pregnant women (β = 0.12, 95% CI [0.06, 0.19]). When confronting COVID-19 related fear and anxiety, expectant mothers from higher coherent families experienced a significantly lower level of prenatal depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Contextual negative emotional experience was demonstrated to explain how risk perception impacts depressive symptoms during severe public health crisis for pregnant women. FSOC may be a psychological resource protecting pregnant women from experiencing adverse psychological outcomes during COVID-19 pandemic. Significance: What is already known on this subject?: Robust evidence showed that maternal perinatal mental health was largely harmed during the early stage of COVID-19 pandemic in China. COVID-19 risk perception was one of the significant risk factors for psychological distress. The aim of the researchers of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of care given in line with Levine's conservation model in reducing the risk of postpartum depression. There were 56 participants in the experimental group and 56 participants in the control group. To reduce postpartum depression, a nursing care program was created by examining the theoretical structure of Levine's Conservation Model. Seven home visits were paid and a nursing care program was implemented. The first four home visits were paid once a week and the remaining three home visits were paid every 15 days. The women were given trainings on different subjects during each home visits. All the trainings were given in accordance with each conservation model. During the fourth home visit, the researcher who was a Pilates instructor taught the puerperae how to do Pilates exercises by demonstrating the exercises. It was determined that in the puerperae in the experimental group, sleep quality improved, that their postpartum fatigue decreased and energy increased, and that their risk of developing postpartum depression decreased. Holistic care given based on Levine's Conservation model improves symptoms of insomnia, fatigue and depression in postpartum women. Levine's Conservation model can be used in routine care to reduce physical, psychological and social problems experienced by women in the postpartum period. Purpose: Postpartum depression (PPD) represents a significant challenge to maternal and child health. Early screening for PPD is essential to ensure appropriate treatment and support. The present study aimed to assess whether maternal prepartum anaemia influences the likelihood of developing PPD within 3 days after delivery. Methods: In collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry, a prospective observational study was carried out at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department of the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" in Naples. A total of 211 full-term pregnant women were enrolled, and their predelivery haemoglobin value was recorded. Women with gestational diabetes, hypertension, pre-eclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, intellectual disability, or pre-existing diagnosis of psychotic spectrum disorder were excluded. Participants provided written informed consent to fill out the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) 3 days after delivery. EPDS cut-off score of ≥ 10 was used to identify women at risk of developing PPD. Statistical analysis was performed using Student's t test, the Wilcoxon Rank Sum test, and linear regression. Results: The participants were categorized into 2 groups based on EPDS scores: EPDS < 10 (176 patients) or EPDS ≥ 10 (35 patients). The two groups showed homogeneity in terms of socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. The mean haemoglobin values of anaemic pregnant women in the EPDS ≤ 10 group (11.78 ± 1.39 g/dl) and the EPDS > 10 group (11.62 ± 1.27 g/dl) were not significantly different (p = 0.52). There was no significant correlation between the predelivery haemoglobin value and the EPDS postpartum score of < 10 or ≥ 10. The Wilcoxon Rank Sum test and the estimated coefficients of the linear regression model did not show any statistical relationship between continuous and binary haemoglobin values. Conclusions: Our study found that maternal prepartum anaemia did not negatively impact the likelihood of developing postpartum depressive symptoms, in the first 3 days after delivery. Purpose: It was reported that maternal-infant bonding failure predicts abusive parenting. Maternal-infant bonding is important to prevent child abuse. This study aimed to investigate the association between prenatal depressive symptoms, anxiety, cortisol, and oxytocin levels, and postnatal maternal–infant bonding. Methods: The participants completed a self-report prenatal questionnaire that included the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) in the second trimester. Blood and saliva were collected in the second trimester. Cortisol levels were measured in plasma, while oxytocin levels were measured in saliva. Postnatal questionnaires, including the Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS), were administered at 2–5 days, 1 month, and 3 months postpartum. Multiple linear regression and generalized estimating equation (GEE) were conducted for analysis. Results: Sixty-six primiparas participated in the study. Prenatal depressive symptoms (EPDS ≥ 9) and anxiety (STAI-S ≥ 42) were observed in 21.2% and 28.8% of the participants, respectively. The median cortisol and oxytocin levels were 21.0 µg/dL and 30.4 pg/mL, respectively. Multivariate linear regression showed that postnatal social support, prenatal depressive symptoms, anxiety, and salivary oxytocin levels predicted MIBS scores at 2–5 days postpartum. At 1 month postpartum, household income, history of miscarriage, postnatal social support, and prenatal anxiety predicted MIBS scores. At 3 months postpartum, only postnatal social support predicted MIBS scores. The results of GEE showed that prenatal anxiety, oxytocin levels, postpartum period, household income, and postpartum social support were associated with MIBS scores. Conclusion: Prenatal depressive symptoms, anxiety, and lower salivary oxytocin levels were predicted to worsen maternal–infant bonding at 2–5 days postpartum. Prenatal anxiety was predicted to cause the same 1 month postpartum. Measuring prenatal depressive symptoms, anxiety, and salivary oxytocin levels may render the assessment of the risk of maternal–infant bonding failure during the early postpartum period and intervene during pregnancy possible. Purpose: To examine the association between partner support for women's antidepressant treatment and depressive symptoms in pregnant women, those planning pregnancy, and mothers who ever used antidepressants. Methods: We included 334 women (n=44 planners, n=182 pregnant, n=108 mothers) ever treated with antidepressants within the HEALTHx2 study, a web-based cross-sectional study conducted across Norway in June 2020 to June 2021. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and two questions of the Patient Health Questionnaire measured depressive symptoms, by degree of severity and for depressed mood, anxiety, and anhedonia sub-dimensions. Partner support was measured using one item from the Antidepressant Compliance Questionnaire. Association was estimated via unadjusted and adjusted linear and logistic regression models. Results: Being unsupported by the partner was associated with increased odds of reporting moderate-to-very-severe depressive symptoms in mothers (adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 3.57; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04–12.19) and pregnant women (aOR, 3.26; 95% CI, 0.95–11.14), relative to being supported. Pregnant women (adjusted mean difference (β), 0.76; 95% CI, 0.14–1.38) and mothers (β, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.23–1.64) with no support for their antidepressant treatment presented greater symptoms of anhedonia; for women planning pregnancy, this association emerged in relation to anxiety symptoms (β among non-users of antidepressant, 2.58; 95% CI, 1.04–4.13). Conclusions: Partner support for women's antidepressant treatment may play a key role in depressive symptoms severity and the subtypes of anhedonia and anxiety, among women planning pregnancy, pregnant women, and mothers. Purpose: The purpose of the study to determine the prevalence of mother postpartum depression and to examine the association between infant characteristics and postpartum depression in the neonatal intensive care unit. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was conducted in three government teaching hospitals in Jordan. A convenience sample of 188 mothers with hospitalized 188 infants in NICU was recruited. Questionnaires were used to collect the quantitative data, which include Infant Demographic Data Questionnaire, Mother Demographic Data Questionnaire and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). The study revealed that infant characteristics such as gestational age, medical condition classification, and birth weight are found to be significant factors that influence depression among mothers. Results: The results showed that mothers with infants admitted to NICU experience postpartum depression with a mean of 3.82 and median of 4.04. There were significant differences based on gestational age, birth weight, and classification of medical condition and mothers' postpartum depression. Conclusion: Knowing the relationship of certain infant's characteristics and postpartum depression can help to focus on relevant infant characteristics so that timely interventions to improve mothers' well-being can be developed. This preliminary study investigates factors related to reduced access to mental healthcare among women in the perinatal period. We enrolled 145 pregnant women followed in OB-GYN services, using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale as a clinical measure for depression symptoms. We observed low levels of adherence to psychiatric screenings and referrals. Our findings confirm the importance of improving access to mental healthcare for women in the perinatal period. Early interventions may promote reductions in mothers' anxiety-depression (AD) symptoms and improvements in their offspring. This longitudinal randomized research was conducted to assess the effects of interdisciplinary online therapeutic groups (GIO) in at-risk mothers and babies during the COVID-19 pandemic in a disadvantaged neighborhood in Barcelona (Spain). A total of 135 babies were born from March 2020 to June 2021 in a primary healthcare center of Barcelona (Spain). Pregnant woman and new mothers were screened for AD symptomatology through EPDS and STAI questionnaires. Seventy-two of them met high-risk criteria for AD and were included in the study. They were randomly assigned into the two groups of the study: 40 participants were assigned to GIO, the therapeutic group (TG), while 32 of them were assigned to the control group (CG) and received treatment as usual. The course of the mothers' symptomatology was assessed, as well as the baby's development at 6 months old in a blind pediatric follow-up. No differences were found in AD between both groups before the intervention. However, we obtained a significant decrease in AD symptomatology (EPDS p <.001; STAI state p =.015 and STAI trait p <.001at 6 months of life) after the intervention in the TG compared to the CG. Pediatric follow-up at 6 months demonstrated significant differences between groups in babies' development assessment (manipulation p =.003; language p <.001; sociability p <.001). Purpose: Postnatal depression (PND) impacts numerous women after childbirth, leading to various impairments in their lives. Mental health interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), need further evaluation in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where resources may be scarce. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of CBT in treating PND in women from LMICs, comparing it to standard care. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA Statement 2020 guidelines. Databases such as PubMed, CINAHL Plus, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO were searched until September 2022. A modified Delphi process was employed to identify relevant studies. The primary outcome was mean depression scores, measured by the Edinburgh postnatal depression scale at baseline and post-intervention. Results: Out of 487 studies identified, five trials were included, totaling 1056 participants (520 in the intervention group and 536 in the comparator group). At baseline, a minor, insignificant positive effect size was found (Cohen's d = 0.1, 95% CI = − 0.15, 0.35). Post-CBT, the intervention group showed significant improvements in depression scores (Cohen's d = − 1.9, 95% CI = − 3.8, 0). When accounting for the influence of one study, (Ngai et al., Psychother Psychosom 84:294–303, 2015), which held substantial weight in the initial analysis, the effect size was adjusted to d = 0.5, highlighting a lesser but still significant difference. Conclusions: CBT appears to be effective in improving PND symptoms among women in LMICs and may be considered a first-line treatment for at-risk mothers, including those who are displaced. However, the significant impact of one study on the results emphasizes the need for more rigorous research. The study also highlights the challenges and limitations of providing psychotherapies across LMICs, emphasizing the need for culturally adapted and contextually appropriate interventions to ensure successful implementation and sustainability of mental health care for postnatal women in these settings. Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified feelings of loneliness, especially among postpartum women. This nationwide Japanese longitudinal study assessed the impact of such feelings on depressive symptoms and mother-to-infant bonding difficulties (MIBD), two pivotal determinants of maternal and infant well-being. Methods: Starting with a baseline survey conducted between July and August 2021, we tracked 1254 postpartum Japanese women who initially reported minimal depressive symptoms (i.e., Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale < 9) and MIBD (i.e., Mother-to-Infant Bonding Scale < 5), over a follow-up period of approximately 6 months. Baseline loneliness was evaluated with the UCLA Loneliness Scale Short-Form (UCLA-LS3-SF3). Results: Forty-nine percent of the sample reported the presence of baseline feelings of loneliness. After propensity score matching on sociodemographics and various pregnancy, childbirth, and COVID-19–related aspects, baseline loneliness was associated with increased risks of later depressive symptoms but not MIBD. Using restricted cubic spline logistic regression and considering loneliness as a continuous variable, we found a positive increasing quadratic relationship with depressive symptoms. As loneliness increased, so did the risk of later depressive symptoms. However, there was no significant association between loneliness and MIBD. These results were confirmed through a sensitivity analysis using inverse probability weighting to address attrition bias. Conclusion: Feelings of postpartum loneliness are associated with future risks of depressive symptoms. Maternal inflammation has been proposed as a possible pathway connecting prenatal environmental adversity (PEA), which includes maternal overweightness or obesity, diabetes, hypertensive disorders, and mood or anxiety disorders, to child neurodevelopmental delay. However, effective preventive measures have not yet been reported. Herein, we aimed to investigate whether a maternal anti-inflammatory diet reduced the risk of PEA-induced neurodevelopmental delay, by inhibiting inflammation. This prospective study included 7438 mother–child pairs. Maternal overweightness or obesity, diabetes, and hypertensive disorders were diagnosed before 28 week gestation. Maternal depression disorders were identified using the Edinburgh postnatal depression survey (EPDS) during mid-pregnancy. During mid- and late pregnancy, maternal high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured to evaluate systemic inflammation. The inflammatory potential of the diet was evaluated using the food-based empirical dietary inflammatory pattern (EDIP) score during mid-pregnancy. Pregnant women were classified into high- or low-score groups based on the median EDIP score. The outcomes of neurodevelopmental delay at 6–36 month postpartum were extracted from the Register of Child Healthcare. Among the 7438 mother–child pairs, 2937 (39.5%) were exposed to PEA, and neurodevelopmental delay occurred in 540 (7.3%). Children exposed to PEA had a higher risk of neurodevelopmental delay than those not exposed. PEA exposure was associated with increased hs-CRP during pregnancy in a PEA monotonic manner, an interquartile range increase in hs-CRP in mid- and late pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of child neurodevelopmental delay. Higher maternal persistent inflammation partially mediated the effect of PEA exposure on child neurodevelopmental delay by 17.19%. An increased risk of PEA-related neurodevelopmental delay was observed only in the children of mothers with high-EDIP rather than low-EDIP. These results suggest that increased systemic inflammation through mid- and late pregnancy mediates the association between PEA and child neurodevelopmental delay. Objective: Responding to the National Institutes of Health Working Group's call for research on the psychological impact of stillbirth, we compared coping-related behaviors by outcome of an index birth (surviving live birth or perinatal loss – stillbirth or neonatal death) and, among individuals with loss, characterized coping strategies and their association with depressive symptoms 6–36 months postpartum. Methods: We used data from the Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network follow-up study (2006–2008) of 285 individuals who experienced a stillbirth, 691 a livebirth, and 49 a neonatal death. We conducted a thematic analysis of coping strategies individuals recommended following their loss. We fit logistic regression models, accounting for sampling and inverse probability of follow-up weights to estimate associations between pregnancy outcomes and coping-related behaviors and, separately, coping strategies and probable depression (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale > 12) for those with loss. Results: Compared to those with a surviving live birth and adjusting for pre-pregnancy drinking and smoking, history of stillbirth, and age, individuals who experienced a loss were more likely to report increased drinking or smoking in the two months postpartum (adjusted OR: 2.7, 95% CI = 1.4–5.4). Those who smoked or drank more had greater odds of probable depression at 6 to 36 months postpartum (adjusted OR 6.4, 95% CI = 2.5–16.4). Among those with loss, recommended coping strategies commonly included communication, support groups, memorializing the loss, and spirituality. Discussion: Access to a variety of evidence-based and culturally-appropriate positive coping strategies may help individuals experiencing perinatal loss avoid adverse health consequences. Significance: What Is Already Known on this Subject?: Experiencing a perinatal loss (stillbirth or neonatal death) is a traumatic event with potential long term psychologic consequences. Effective coping strategies can prevent complicated grief; yet little is known about current practices and preferences among parents who experience perinatal loss. What this Study Adds?: In a population-based study, individuals who experienced perinatal loss reported higher maladaptive coping (increased smoking and drinking) compared to those with healthy live birth. Postnatal depressive symptoms have harmful effects on families' well-being. This study reports the dyadic interactions between fathers' and mothers' social support, parenting sense of competence, and postnatal depressive symptoms, and explores the mediating role of parenting sense of competence in the relationship between social support and depressive symptoms. A multi-center, cross-sectional study was designed. A convenience sample of 280 participants (140 couples) in China completed assessments of study variables at three days postpartum. Mothers' social support was positively related to fathers' parenting sense of competence (β = 0.219, p =.018). Fathers' social support was negatively related to mothers' postnatal depressive symptoms (β = -0.192, p =.036). In mothers and fathers, the indirect effects of social support on postnatal depressive symptoms through parenting sense of competence were significant (β = -0.108, 95% CI [-0.202, -0.040]; β = -0.108, 95% CI [-0.241, -0.007]). Furthermore, the indirect effect of mothers' social support on fathers' postnatal depressive symptoms through fathers' parenting sense of competence was significant (β = -0.100, 95% CI [-0.196, -0.014]). Postnatal depressive symptoms in fathers should receive equal attention as those in mothers. There are dyadic interaction effects between mothers' and fathers' social support, parenting sense of competence, and postnatal depressive symptoms, therefore, developing couple-centered interventions is crucial. Parenting sense of competence mediated the relationship between social support and postnatal depressive symptoms; thus it is important to improve parenting sense of competence to reduce postnatal depressive symptoms during the early postpartum transition. Objectives: Remotely administered mental health care is becoming increasingly common for treatment of a range of psychiatric disorders; however, there is a dearth of literature overviewing direct comparisons between remote and in-person interventions for treatment of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). The sudden advent of the Covid-19 pandemic in New York City forced an abrupt conversion for an intensive day treatment program for new mothers with PMADs, from an on-site to a remote program. Methods: The current report compares outcomes of 81 women who completed the program in-person to those of 60 women who completed the program remotely. Results: Improvement in depression scores was statistically superior in the remote program, and improvement in mother-infant bonding was statistically equivalent between the on-site and remote programs. Discussion: These findings indicate that specialized partial hospitalization treatment for individuals with moderate to severe psychiatric illness can be effectively provided via telehealth, thus offering improved convenience, accessibility, and safety without compromising care. We conclude that remotely administered group psychotherapy is an effective intervention for women with moderate to severe PMADs. Significance: Resources and treatments remain limited for perinatal women, with approximately 50% of women diagnosed with a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder (PMAD) not receiving adequate mental health treatment (Luca et al., 2020), with accessibility and viability as essential to appropriate treatment of PMADs. While the advantages of remotely administered mental health treatments have been established, there is a dearth of evidence of the utility and benefits of virtual mental health treatment for women with PMADs. Our analyses represent a significant contribution to the literature regarding treatment of women with severe PMADs, especially acute depressive symptoms, in the virtual milieu. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial adverse impact on the physical and mental health of pregnant and postpartum women, thereby increasing the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a continuous contactless exercise intervention in reducing the risk of depression during the prenatal and postnatal periods. The study utilized an interactive contactless exercise program consisting of Pilates movement over a 16-week period, with 8 weeks during pregnancy and 8 weeks after childbirth. Metabolic and psychological factors related to postpartum depression, including pain, stress, and stress-response markers, were analyzed. The results showed that the exercise intervention significantly alleviated postpartum depression by improving pain (Oswestry Disability Index: Non-exercise, 11.4 ± 14.8 versus Exercise, − 63.1 ± 18.4, p <.001) and stress factors (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale: Non-exercise, 8.8 ± 8.72 versus Exercise, − 37.6 ± 9.13, p <.001; Perceived Stress Scale: Non-exercise, 9.21 ± 9.35 versus Exercise, − 20.7 ± 14.4, p <.001) caused by physical/structural imbalances in postpartum women. Additionally, the intervention improved the metabolic imbalances commonly observed after childbirth, including reductions in triglyceride (Interaction effect, p =.017), insulin (Interaction effect, p =.032), and cortisol levels (Interaction effect, p <.001), which are recognized risk factors for postpartum depression. Taken together, these findings suggest that contactless online exercise interventions can mitigate postpartum depression by addressing metabolic dysregulation that frequently occurs after delivery, especially in situations of social isolation caused by the pandemic. The meta-analysis aims to explore the effect of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in the perinatal period. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessed the effects of CBT-I in perinatal women with insomnia, published in English, were eligible. Electronic searches were performed using PubMed, Embase (Elsevier), PsycINFO (Ebsco), and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) as the primary outcome was used to estimate the pooled effects and durable efficacy of CBT-I. The secondary outcome measures were Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Of 46 studies reviewed, seven studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis indicated significant improvement in insomnia as measured with the ISI (standardized mean difference (SMD) = − 0.62, 95% confidence intervals (CI) − 0.77, − 0.47, I2 = 28%). At the follow-up time point, the meta-analysis indicated the durable efficacy of CBT-I (SMD = − 0.47, 95% CI − 0.90, − 0.03, I2 = 73%). Definite improvement of CBT-I on EPDS (SMD = -0.31, 95% CI − 0.55, − 0.06, I2 = 33%) and PSQI (SMD = − 0.82, 95% CI − 1.27, − 0.38, I2 = 68%) score change post-intervention were found. In sub-analyses, CBT-I had similar effect sizes, independent of possible modifiers (study population, comparison group, delivery format, etc.). This meta-analysis demonstrates that CBT-I is effective in alleviating insomnia, depression, and sleep quality among perinatal women. It is equally important to find that CBT-I has a durable efficacy on insomnia in the perinatal period. Introduction: Perinatal depression and sleep difficulties are common among studies conducted in high income countries (HIC). This study examines the relationship between sleep difficulties and depression during the perinatal period and over an eight-year follow-up period in South Africa, a middle income country. Method: A population cohort of 1238 pregnant women (mean age = 26.33) in 24 township neighborhoods in South Africa were recruited and reassessed six times over the next 8 years post birth with follow-up rates of 96–83%. The relationship between maternal depressed mood and sleep difficulties was examined over time, as well as the relationship of sleep with other socioeconomic, environmental, and psychiatric risk factors. Results: Thirty-five percent of the women reported sleep difficulties during the perinatal period; whereas only 8% reported sleep difficulties at 8-year follow-up. Perinatal sleep difficulties were associated with lower income, lower educational attainment, less access to electricity, more food insecurity, higher rates of interpersonal violence and HIV, alcohol consumption, and depressed mood at 8 years. However, the severity of depressed mood was the strongest predictor of sleep problems longitudinally and cross-sectionally, after accounting for all other risk factors. Conclusions: We found that the severity of depressed mood is highly associated with sleep difficulties from pregnancy to 8 years post-birth and in a linear relationship, so that higher depressed mood is associated with more sleep problems. The COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) pandemic has led to several mandatory prevention regulations, changes in healthcare services, unprecedented unemployment rates, financial stress, and emotional worries. Given the increasing cases of COVID-19, coupled with the drastic physical and psychological changes within postpartum mothers during the postpartum period, this paper aims to present an overview of the postpartum depression (PPD) among postpartum women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The postpartum period is characterized by drastic physical changes and substantial demands on parental role adjustment, and it places enormous stress on the mothers and makes them vulnerable to mental health problems. A literature search was conducted in four electronic databases (ScienceDirect, Scopus, Wiley, and SAGE) with different combinations of keywords were used. As the result, 25 articles that involved 10,515 postpartum women from 14 countries were extracted. Results have recorded PPD prevalence ranged from 6.4% to 56.9% during the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited social support, social isolation, fear of COVID-19 exposure, or infection for themselves, newborns, have worsening PPD symptoms among postpartum women. Prior to January 2023, women living with HIV (WLWH) in the United States (US) were discouraged from breastfeeding due to the potential risk of mother-to-child HIV transmission through breastfeeding. Lack of breastfeeding decision-making and experience among WLWH may negatively affect maternal mental health. We implemented a quality improvement initiative to screen WLWH for postpartum depression (PPD), evaluate their attitudes toward breastfeeding, and assess their experience with breastfeeding decision-making. We collected quantitative data from WLWH using a voluntary, self-administered 6-item breastfeeding decision-making and experience survey (administered 1 month postpartum) and a 10-item Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS, negative = 0–9; administered 1 and 4 months postpartum) tool. We conducted descriptive statistics and cross tabulation analysis. We analyzed 106 WLWH (93.4% non-Hispanic Black/African American; mean age 33.1 years; 82.1% HIV RNA < 200 copies/mL). One in five (19.1%) WLWH had a positive baseline EPDS screen, with the mean EPDS scores decreasing from 5.3 ± 5.4 (baseline) to 4.6 ± 4.8 (follow-up). Among 55 WLWH who provided baseline and follow-up EPDS scores, only 3/13 with a positive baseline EPDS screen had resolved depressive symptoms at follow-up. Over one-third (37.7%) of WLWH indicated feeling "sadness" when asked whether lack of breastfeeding negatively affected their feelings or emotions. Over half of WLWH (51.9%) were aware of the US breastfeeding recommendations, but the majority (60.4%) had never discussed breastfeeding options with a medical provider. Improved provider–patient discussions on infant feeding options among WLWH is needed to increase awareness of breastfeeding choices and promote informed, autonomous breastfeeding decision-making among WLWH. Objective: To determine the prevalence of eating disorders and orthorexia in postpartum women and examine the relationship with postpartum depression. Study design: Included in this study were 227 postpartum women. The Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) was used to determine the risk of eating disorders in the women, followed by the Orthorexia 11 Scale (ORTO-11) to identify orthorexia, and the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) to identify postpartum depression. Results: 63 of the women (27.8%) exhibited an orthorexic tendency, which was also related to eating disorders and postpartum depression. Each one-point increase in the EAT-26 score led to a decrease of 0.32 points in the ORTO-11 score. Similarly, each one-point increase in the EPDS score caused a reduction of 0.18 points in the ORTO-11 score. The ORTO-11 score increased by 0.26 points per each live birth. Conclusion: An obsessive focus on healthful nutrition may result in the impairment of health and numerous adverse psychological and physiological outcomes in the future. Background: Perinatal depression (PND) describes depression experienced by parents during pregnancy or in the first year after a baby is born. The EQ-5D instrument (a generic measure of health status) is not often collected in perinatal research, however disease-specific measures, such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) are widely used. Mapping can be used to estimate generic health utility index values from disease-specific measures like the EPDS. Objective: To develop a mapping algorithm to estimate EQ-5D utility index values from the EPDS. Methods: Patient-level data from the BaBY PaNDA study (English observational cohort study) provided 1068 observations with paired EPDS and EQ-5D (3-level version; EQ-5D-3L) responses. We compared the performance of six alternative regression model types, each with four specifications of covariates (EPDS score and age: base, squared, and cubed). Model performance (ability to predict utility values) was assessed by ranking mean error, mean absolute error, and root mean square error. Algorithm performance in 3 external datasets was also evaluated. Results: There was moderate correlation between EPDS score and utility values (coefficient: – 0.42). The best performing model type was a two-part model, followed by ordinary least squared. Inclusion of squared and cubed covariates improved model performance. Based on graphs of observed and predicted utility values, the algorithm performed better when utility was above 0.6. Conclusions: This direct mapping algorithm allows the estimation of health utility values from EPDS scores. Perinatal anxiety is a prevalent mental health issue associated with deleterious effects; however, factors that affect treatment outcomes have yet to be identified. We examined predictors of treatment completion and moderators of treatment outcome among individuals receiving six weeks of group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Perinatal Anxiety (CBT-PA) via retrospective chart review. Among 98 women (Mean age = 32.36, SD = 4.79; 87% postpartum), pregnancy (versus postpartum), comorbid depression, and greater pre-treatment anxiety symptoms, as measured by the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale, were predictive of treatment attrition. Among treatment completers, older maternal age was associated with greater number of sessions completed. Overall, anxiety symptom scores significantly reduced from pre- to post-treatment. Obsessive-compulsive symptoms, comorbid depression, and two or more comorbid diagnoses at pre-treatment were each significantly associated with higher overall anxiety scores across both time points. Further, women with versus without health anxiety at pre-treatment showed a greater reduction in anxiety from pre- to post-treatment. Pregnancy and/or the puerperium involve social, physiological and psychological changes that make women more vulnerable to mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, even more so if these develop in stressful contexts such as the pandemic. The aim of this study is to identify factors associated with the risk of postpartum anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional study was conducted among postpartum women (n = 69) who gave birth between March 2020 and March 2021 in Melilla, a Spanish cross-border city with Morocco whose borders were closed, making it a confined city. The scales used were the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Results reported an elevated risk of depression (85.5%) and anxiety (63.8%), with severe anxiety reaching 40.6% of cases. Predictors of postpartum depression comprised a personal history of mood disorders (β = 8.421; CI95% = 4.863/11.978) and having been diagnosed with COVID-19 during pregnancy or postpartum (β = 4.488; CI95% = 1.331/7.646). As regards anxiety, it is predicted on the basis of mood antecedents (β = 14.175; CI95% = 7.870/20.479), the fact of having been diagnosed with COVID-19 during pregnancy or postpartum (β = 8.781; CI95% = 2.970/14.592) and the fact of being a multipara (β = 5.513; CI95% = 0.706/10.321). In conclusion, special attention should be paid to women with a history of mood disorders and a positive diagnosis of COVID-19 during pregnancy or postpartum, even more so in the case of multiparous women, because of its impact on mental health during the postpartum period. While past research has linked cannabis use in pregnancy with a history of depression, sparse literature exists on cannabis use during pregnancy and postpartum depression (PPD). In this study, we aimed to better understand the association between PPD and cannabis use during pregnancy in those with and without a history of depression. This was a retrospective cohort study of patients who received prenatal care at a single institution between January 2017 and December 2019. Patient demographics, obstetric history, depression history, substance use history, and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) scores were extracted from patients' medical records. Modified Poisson Regression with robust standard errors was used to estimate the relative risk (RR) of screening positive for PPD, adjusting for age at delivery, race/ethnicity, insurance type, marital status, and smoking history. Among the 799 subjects meeting inclusion criteria, 15.9% used cannabis during pregnancy. There was an increased risk of screening positive for PPD among prenatal cannabis users compared to non-users (aRR = 1.60, 95% CI: (1.05, 2.45)). Among individuals with a history of depression, the adjusted relative risk of screening positive for symptoms of PPD at the postpartum visit was 1.62 times greater in cannabis users compared to non-users (95% CI: (1.02, 2.58)). Prenatal cannabis use is associated with screening positive for PPD, particularly in those individuals with a history of depression. These results should discourage women with depression from self-medicating with cannabis in pregnancy and provide additional support to the existing recommendations to abstain from prenatal cannabis use. Perinatal depression is a serious public health issue among African American adolescents who experience significant racial health disparities in addition to age-related mental and physical health risks. Perinatal depression prevention interventions that specifically target the needs of African American adolescents are warranted. The current study presents the development and preliminary results of an intervention designed to prevent perinatal depression among African American adolescents using the heuristic framework for cultural adaptations. Adaptations were applied to an existing evidence-based cognitive behavioral group intervention to develop the Mothers and Babies Course for African American Adolescents. Adaptations were guided by qualitative data collected from a focus group and individual interviews, and by existing research on specific risk and protective factors that drive engagement with and barriers to interventions for this population. The adapted intervention was piloted with 7 pregnant and 21 postpartum African American adolescent students at four different public high schools in an urban city in the United States. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess pre- and post-intervention perinatal depression scores. Accessibility and feasibility were assessed using participant and observer evaluations, respectively. Results indicated reductions in pre- to post-intervention depression scores and high acceptability and feasibility of the pilot study. Additional adaptations of the intervention based on qualitative feedback from study participants are discussed. Future development and implementation of the intervention provides an opportunity to reduce a mental health disparity that disproportionately affects African American adolescents. Low partner relationship satisfaction is a strong predictor of perinatal depression and anxiety symptoms. However, little is known about the potential mechanisms via which partner relationship satisfaction may exert its effects on the mental health of perinatal women. Therefore, the aim of this exploratory study was to examine the direct and indirect effects, via maternal self-efficacy and psychological flexibility in sequence, of partner relationship satisfaction on the complete mental health of women at high risk for postpartum depression (PPD). The sample for this study comprised 963 early postpartum women presenting high-risk for PPD, as determined by the clinical cutoff score obtained through the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory-Revised. The assessment protocol further included self-report measures of partner relationship satisfaction, maternal self-efficacy, psychological flexibility, depression, anxiety, and positive mental health. Correlation analyses were conducted to ascertain associations between variables, and structural equation modelling (path analysis) was performed to examine direct and indirect effects. The observed results revealed that higher levels of partner relationship satisfaction were related to lower levels of postpartum psychological distress and higher levels of positive mental health. Moreover, those links were found to be sequentially mediated by maternal self-efficacy and psychological flexibility. These findings suggest that increased maternal self-efficacy, boosted by satisfactory partner relationships, may improve the psychological flexibility of women at high risk for PPD, and ultimately their complete mental health. Accordingly, intervention efforts to prevent PPD may increase their effectiveness by addressing partner relationship satisfaction as a key variable for the promotion of complete perinatal mental health. Background: Little research has been conducted on the association between pregnant specific stress and depressive symptoms, and whether family relationship and leisure hobbies moderate the association. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 647 pregnant women was conducted in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province of China. Pregnancy Pressure Scale (PPS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and two single items were used to assess stress, perinatal depressive symptoms, family relationship and leisure hobbies, respectively. The analysis included χ2-test, Fisher's exact test, and binary logistic regression. Results: The prevalence of perinatal depressive symptoms was 22.9% among the participants. After adjustment, four dimensions of pregnancy stress were found to increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and odds ratios (ORs) were 4.175 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.240, 7.779), 5.947 (95% CI = 2.624, 13.478), 3.907 (95% CI = 2.375, 6.425), and 8.534 (95% CI = 4.588, 15.873) for factors 1, 2, 3, and 4 (recognition of the role of parents, worrying about maternal and child health and safety, the changes in body shape and physical activity level, as well as child care and marriage), respectively. In addition, significant interactions were found between factor 2, factor 4 and family relationship, leisure hobbies with depressive symptoms, respectively (interaction P < 0.10). Conclusion: Tailored stress-overcoming programs, as well as health services, are needed to relieve women's pregnancy stress and prevent them from depressive symptoms. Clinical practice should conduct family relationship-oriented interventions and women themselves can cultivate extensive leisure hobbies in the period of pregnancy preparation. A blended cognitive-behavioral intervention for postpartum depression (Be a Mom Coping with Depression) was developed, consisting of the combination of seven face-to-face sessions (delivered through videocall) with six online sessions in a web-based program. This study aimed to assess the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects on depressive symptoms. A single-arm pre- and post-test study was conducted, and adult Portuguese women in the postpartum period (up to 12 months) with a clinical diagnosis of a major depressive episode were eligible to participate (n = 9). Participants completed self-report measures and were interviewed after completing the intervention. Eight participants completed the blended intervention. The recruitment rate was low, but the adherence to treatment was high. Participants reported several advantages of this intervention and high levels of satisfaction. The blended intervention was found to be feasible and acceptable, and a reduction on depressive symptoms was observed in our sample. These results support the conduction of a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of this blended intervention and provided important information to proceed with the necessary modifications. Purpose: There are different studies worldwide, which have shown a higher risk of mental disorders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One aim of this study was to identify influencing factors of the psychological burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact on the development of postpartum depression. Further, the role of individual stress and coping strategies was analyzed in this context. Materials and methods: Between March and October 2020, 131 women in obstetric care at the LMU Clinic Munich completed a questionnaire at consecutive stages during their perinatal period. The times set for the questionnaire were before birth, 1 month, 2 months, and 6 months after birth. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate the psychological burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic. For this a modified version of the Stress and coping inventory (SCI) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used. Results: We could show that the psychological burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the EPDS score 1, 2 and 6 months after birth. In addition, the prenatal stress and individual coping strategies affected the EPDS and the burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic before and after birth significantly. Conclusion: An association of the psychological burden related to the COVID-19 pandemic with the risk of developing postpartum depressive symptoms could be shown in this study. In this context, the separation of the partner and the family was recognized as an important factor. Furthermore, the SCI was identified as an effective screening instrument for identifying mothers with an increased risk of postpartum depression. Emerging data suggest that certain adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with perinatal depression (PND). However, few studies have comprehensively assessed the cumulative number and types of ACEs and their association to PND. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis among 16,831 female participants from the Stress-And-Gene-Analysis (SAGA) cohort in Iceland, 2018. ACEs were surveyed with the World Health Organization ACE—International questionnaire, while PND symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (lifetime version). We, while adjusting for confounding factors, estimated the prevalence ratio (PR) of PND in relation to total number of ACEs using the Poisson quasi-likelihood model and further performed analyses for type-specific ACEs. At a mean age of 44 years (SD ± 11.1), 6,201 (36.8%) participants had experienced probable PND. Total number of ACEs was positively associated with PND (PR 1.11 per ACE, 95% CI: 1.10–1.11), also among women without any psychiatric comorbidities (PR 1.13, 95% CI: 1.11–1.14). PRs increased in a dose–response manner with the number of ACEs (P for trend < 0.001); women that endorsed 5 or more ACEs were twice as likely to have experienced PND (PR 2.24, 95% CI: 2.09–2.41). All ACE types (n = 13) were associated with PND, with most pronounced association for emotional neglect by a guardian (PR 1.53, 95% CI: 1.47–1.59). Our findings suggest a positive association between number of ACEs and PND symptoms. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal's depression trajectory in the first 1000 days of the child's life on the prevalence of early childhood dental caries (ECC), in a birth cohort. Materials and methods: All infants born in Pelotas in 2015 were identified, and the mothers were invited to participate in the cohort. A total of 3645 children were included in the study. The outcome was ECC at 48 months of age assessed according to ICDAS. Maternal depression was collected using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) antenatally, at 3, 12, and 24 months of age. Maternal depressive symptom trajectory variables were created using group-based trajectory models and adopting two cutoff points. Poisson regression model with robust variance was used to identify the total effect of maternal depressive symptom trajectories on ECC, adjusting by confounders. Results: A total of 29.2% of the mothers presented a high trajectory for screening of depression, and 18.8% presented a high trajectory of depression diagnosis. The prevalence of ECC was 26.7%. After adjusted analysis, maternal depression trajectories (screening and diagnosis) from pregnancy to 24 months increased the risk for ECC at 48 months of age (RR = 1.14; 95% CI 1.02–1.28 and RR = 1.19; 95% CI 1.05–1.35). Conclusions: Children from mothers with high depression trajectory had higher risk of having dental caries at 48 months compared to children from mothers with low depression trajectory. Clinical relevance: Strategies of early detection and treatment of maternal mental disorders during the Golden Period should be considered of high priority in health services since it could impact positively in children's life. Maternal health is a critical component of optimal child health and development. Consequently, the American Academy of Pediatrics added postpartum depression (PPD) screening to their psychosocial screening guidelines in 2017. The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Children Project (HMHCP) was an interprofessional initiative aimed at preparing for, then implementing and maintaining pediatrician-completed PPD screening at 1-month well visits in a pediatric primary care clinic. Roles of pediatric psychology and rates of PPD screening were examined. Pediatric psychologists actively participated as leaders and collaborators in a variety of non-clinical roles from HMHCP preparation through maintenance. The clinic achieved high and continuously improving PPD screening rates following HMHCP implementation. Importantly, PPD screening rates were equitable across race and gender. The current study outlines feasible non-clinical roles that pediatric psychologists can fulfill in support of routine PPD screening within pediatric primary care. To evaluate and compare the factor structure and reliability of EPDS and PHQ in antepartum and postpartum samples. Parallel analysis and exploratory factor analysis were conducted to determine the structure of both scales in the entire sample as well as in the antepartum and postpartum groups. McDonald's omega statistics examined the utility of treating items as a single scale versus multiple factors. Multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MCFA) was utilized to test the measurement invariance between the antepartum and postpartum groups. Two-factor models fit best for the EPDS in both the antepartum and postpartum groups; however, the most reliable score variance was attributable to a general factor for each scale. MCFA provided evidence of weak invariance across groups regarding factor loadings and partial invariance regarding item thresholds. PHQ-9 showed a two-factor model in the antepartum group; however, the same model did not fit well in the postpartum group. EPDS should be preferred to PHQ-9 for measuring depressive symptoms in peripartum populations. Both scales should be used as a single-factor scale. A quality improvement project was conducted to improve rates of screening and referrals with postpartum Latinx immigrant mothers. Community health workers were designated to assist with PPD screening and referral for behavioral health services, at a pediatric patient-centered medical home, using a referral process algorithm (Byatt, N., Biebel, K. & Straus, J. Postpartum Depression Screening Algorithm for Pediatric Providers During Well-Child Visits, MCPAP for Moms: Promoting maternal mental health during and after pregnancy, N/A (2014)). Using chi analysis of pre and post implementation findings, results demonstrated a 21% increase in screening of eligible postpartum mothers. Referrals for behavioral health services also increased from 9 to 22% of patients that screened positive. Community Health Workers were an asset in increasing screening and referral practices for PPD in a Latinx immigrant population. This study aimed to examine the impact of maternal depressive symptoms trajectories on 15-year-old adolescents' self-esteem and emotion regulation and test the mediating role of child maltreatment in this association. The 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort is an ongoing cohort study originally comprised of 4231 live births in a southern Brazilian city. We examined a subsample of 1949 adolescents at age 15 years. Maternal depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Trajectories of maternal depression from 3 months until the 11-year follow-up were calculated using a group-based modeling approach. Child maltreatment at age 11 years was measured using the parent-report version of the Parent–Child Conflict Tactics Scale. Adolescent outcomes at age 15 years were assessed by the self-report version of the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale and the Emotion Regulation Index for Children and Adolescents. Path model analysis was conducted using a structural equation modeling framework in Mplus software. All maternal depression trajectories were negatively associated with offspring self-esteem and emotion regulation compared to the reference group (low depression trajectory). There was a significant indirect effect of maternal depression trajectories on emotion regulation mediated via child maltreatment. No evidence of moderation by sex was found for any pathway. Background and Objectives: Early reports during the COVID-19 pandemic showed pregnant and postpartum women have increased rates of anxiety and depression. We hypothesized that exposure to more COVID-19-related events (e.g., stay-at-home orders, school closures, work layoffs, family members ill with COVID-19; Event Exposure), greater perceived impact of COVID-19 events on the family (Family Impact), and less social support would be associated with more anxiety and depression symptoms among first-time mothers. Methods: We interviewed 125 first-time mothers of infants under 3 months of age from four pediatric primary care offices (June 2020 - February 2021) to assess COVID-19 experiences, anxiety and depression symptoms, and social support. Hierarchical linear regression evaluated relations between COVID-19 Event Exposure, COVID-19 Family Impact, and social support on maternal anxiety and depression symptoms. Results: COVID-19 Event Exposure was not associated with depression or anxiety symptom scores. However, greater COVID-19 Family Impact was related to increased maternal depression and anxiety symptoms when controlling for COVID-19 Event Exposure. Reduced social support predicted higher depression symptom scores, but not anxiety symptom scores, when accounting for other variables. Conclusion: The number of COVID-19-related events experienced by first-time mothers did not predict anxiety or depression symptoms. However, greater perceived impact of COVID-19 on their family was associated with higher symptoms of anxiety and depression in these mothers. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can promote infant neurodevelopmental impairment and maternal postpartum depression (PPD). However, the associations between lactation exposure to EDCs, maternal PPD, and infant neurodevelopment are unclear. Hence, we investigated these relationships in infants aged 36–42 months. We recruited 221 Korean mothers and analyzed 29 EDCs. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to assess maternal PPD. Bayley scales of infant development; the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham rating scale (SNAP); and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were used to assess neurodevelopment in infants exposed to the top 30% of EDC over three years. Multiple regression analyses were adjusted for maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, education, income, employment, residence, and infant age and sex. The rates of infants with clinically abnormal diagnoses on neurologic developmental tests (Balyey, SNAP, and CBCL scales) ranged from 7.7 to 38.5% in this study, with the motor and hyperactivity/impulsivity areas scoring the highest among 65 boys and girls. Mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and mono-isononyl phthalate (MiNP) levels in breast milk significantly correlated with infant inattention and hyperactivity. Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) levels correlated significantly with motor development of BSID-III and total CBCL score which mean infant might have lower developmental status. EDC concentrations in breast milk were not associated with maternal PPD. Mindfulness-based interventions have the potential to improve depressive symptoms but are not effective for everyone. The current study aims to find target populations for a mindfulness-based intervention, to improve antenatal depression based on the personalized causal pathway hypothesis. This is a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. A total of 168 pregnant women were randomly allocated to a mindfulness-based intervention group or a control group. Depression assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and mindfulness assessed by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, that were collected at baseline and post-intervention, were included in the moderated mediation models. Demographic and pregnancy-related characteristics were included as moderators. Pregnant women receiving mindfulness intervention had significantly higher mindfulness scores than those in the control group (F = 5.840, P = 0.017). The intervention group predicted a decrease in depression through an increase in mindfulness compared to the control group, with an indirect effect of -0.151 and 95%CI: [-0.340, -0.007]. Moderated mediation analyses indicated that age (Index = 0.356, 95%CI: [0.001, 0.832]) and parity (Index = 0.356, 95%CI: [0.020, 0.817]) moderated this mediation path. Younger pregnant women and primiparous women gained mindfulness skills through mindfulness intervention and their depressive symptoms were relieved. The results indicate that mindfulness interventions decrease antenatal depressive symptoms among younger pregnant women and primiparous women. Future studies should further examine additional mechanisms of mindfulness interventions and more moderators can be tested to improve depression treatment efficacy. Maternal morbidity and mortality remain high among women who did not attend antenatal care (ANC). Antenatal care is one of the interventions given to pregnant women to detect existed problems or problems that can develop during pregnancy, which harm the health of pregnant women and fetuses. In Ethiopia, however, there is limited evidence that revealed the effect of antenatal depression on ANC service utilization. Hence, this study aimed to see the effect of antenatal depression on ANC visits among women in urban northwest Ethiopia. A population-based, prospective cohort study was done from June 2019 to March 2020. The Edinburgh postnatal depression scale was administered to 970 women in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy to screen for antenatal depression. Additional data were collected on ANC visits, the mother's socio-demographic, obstetric, clinical, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. A logistic regression model was used to adjust confounders and determine associations between antenatal depression and inadequate ANC visits. The cumulative incidence of inadequate ANC visits was 62.58% (95% CI: 59.43, 65.63). The cumulative incidence of inadequate ANC visits among depressed pregnant women was 75% as compared to 56% in non-depressed. The incidence of inadequate ANC visits in the exposed group due to antenatal depression was 25.33%. After multivariable analysis, antenatal depression at the second and third trimesters of pregnancy remained a potential predictor of inadequate ANC visits (AOR = 1.96: (95% CI 1.22, 3.16)). In addition, antenatal depression, long travel time for ANC visits (AOR = 1.83 (95% CI 1.166, 2.870)), and late initiation of ANC visits (AOR = 2.20 (95% CI 1.393, 3.471)) were the predictors of inadequate ANC visits as compared to their counterpart. This study suggested that antenatal depression affects ANC visits in Ethiopian urban settings. Background: The Postpartum-Specific Anxiety Scale (PSAS) is an international measure designed to evaluate anxiety experienced by mothers in the postpartum period from one day to six months; the scale was translated into Arabic and validated within Palestinian context to test postpartum anxiety among Palestinian women. Aims: The current study aimed to test the psychometric properties and the factorial structure within the Arabic language in a Palestinian context using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The sample of this study consisted of 475 Palestinian women recruited from health centers in the West Banks of Palestine using a convenience sample. 61% were of ages 20–30 years and 39% percent ages 31–40 years. Findings: The PSAS showed good validity and reliability indicators in assessing postpartum anxiety within Palestinian context. Results of CFA showed a stable construct of a four-factor structure in assessing postpartum anxiety among Palestinian mothers: (1) competence and attachment anxieties, (2) infant safety and welfare anxieties, (3) practical baby care anxieties and (4) psychosocial adjustment to motherhood, which is consisting with the original four-factor structure of the scale. Conclusions: The PSAS showed good validity indicators within Palestinian context. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct similar studies with clinical and non-clinical groups in the Palestinian society. The PSAS can be a useful measure to assess anxiety levels among women during the postpartum months; which will enable mental health providers to provide psychological interventions for mothers whose anxiety levels are high. Background: Maternal perinatal depression has been shown to have long lasting effects on children's development. Studies have described the relationship of perinatal depression on children's cognition, especially negative effects on intelligence quotient (IQ). However, a recent examination of the current studies to discern the patterns and strength of associations between perinatal depression and child IQ is not available. Objective: The purpose of this systematic review is to discern the effects of perinatal depression, prenatally and within the first 12 months of the postpartum period, on the IQ of the child aged 0–18 years old. Methods: We searched the electronic databases: PubMed and CINAHL. We identified 1633 studies, and included 17 studies in the final review based on pre-determined criteria. After the data was extracted, we assessed the strength of the study using the national heart, lung, and blood institute quality assessment tool for observational cohort and cross-sectional studies. This systematic review had a total sample of 10,757 participants. Results: Across the studies, we identified a relationship between limited maternal responsiveness due to postpartum depression and a decrease in full IQ scores in younger children. Male children were found to be more sensitive to the postpartum depression, resulting in a decrease in IQs, in comparison to female children. Conclusions: Policies should be implemented to identify women suffering from perinatal depression to mitigate the effects of the disorder for both the mother and her child. Objectives: Technology-based outreach offers promise for providing support to a broad population of postpartum mothers while keeping costs low. However, research on the efficacy of this approach is scarce. We conducted a pre-registered randomized pilot trial of the effects of a novel technology-based approach for supporting postpartum mothers – via text-based mentoring – from infant's birth through 18 months. Methods: Mothers (n = 201) were recruited at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA in the days immediately following delivery. Treatment mothers were matched with volunteer mentors who communicated with them entirely via text messages. Control mothers received monthly one-way texts on basic safety topics. Measures were collected via hospital records and mother surveys. We estimated treatment effects on mothers' parenting stress, mental health, knowledge of child development, engagement in language and literacy activities, and child milestones at 4- and 18-months postpartum. We used a systematic coding approach and simple descriptive statistics to analyze the treatment mother-mentor texting transcripts. Results: We found no statistically significant impacts on targeted outcomes. However, impacts for some outcomes were meaningfully large (> 0.2 SDs). Analyses of texting transcripts showed that most mothers stayed engaged for the full 18-month study period and that mother-mentor pairs primarily discussed maternal wellbeing and child-focused topics. Conclusions for Practice: Postpartum mothers will engage with mentors in a text-based mentoring program around important maternal and child health topics. More research and development on technology-based supports for parents in the early childhood years is needed. Significance: What is already known on this subject? The transition from pregnancy into parturition is physiologically directed by maternal, fetal and placental tissues. We hypothesize that these processes may be reflected in maternal physiological metrics. We enrolled pregnant participants in the third-trimester (n = 118) to study continuously worn smart ring devices monitoring heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, sleep and physical activity from negative temperature coefficient, 3-D accelerometer and infrared photoplethysmography sensors. Weekly surveys assessed labor symptoms, pain, fatigue and mood. We estimated the association between each metric, gestational age, and the likelihood of a participant's labor beginning prior to (versus after) the clinical estimated delivery date (EDD) of 40.0 weeks with mixed effects regression. A boosted random forest was trained on the physiological metrics to predict pregnancies that naturally passed the EDD versus undergoing onset of labor prior to the EDD. Here we report that many raw sleep, activity, pain, fatigue and labor symptom metrics are correlated with gestational age. As gestational age advances, pregnant individuals have lower resting heart rate 0.357 beats/minute/week, 0.84 higher heart rate variability (milliseconds) and shorter durations of physical activity and sleep. Further, random forest predictions determine pregnancies that would pass the EDD with accuracy of 0.71 (area under the receiver operating curve). Self-reported symptoms of labor correlate with increased gestational age and not with the timing of labor (relative to EDD) or onset of spontaneous labor. Purpose: Our aim was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on depressive symptoms among mothers from a population-based birth cohort in Pelotas, Southern Brazil. Methods: A subgroup of mothers from the Pelotas 2004 Birth Cohort was assessed pre-pandemic (November,2019 to March,2020) and mid-pandemic (August-December,2021). In both follow-ups, depressive symptoms were assessed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Pre-pandemic (T1) and pandemic-related predictors (T2) were analyzed. Prevalence of depression (EPDS score ≥ 13) at T1 and T2 were compared with chi-square test. Changes in EPDS from T1 to T2 were estimated by multivariate latent change score modelling. Results: 1,550 women were assessed. Prevalence of depression increased 38.1% (from 18.9% at T1 to 26.1% at T2) (p < 0.001). At T1, higher schooling, higher family income and being employed or working were related to lower EPDS, whereas being beneficiary of a cash transfer program and a larger number of people living in the household predicted higher EPDS. The deterioration of ones' own perception of quality of overall health (β = 0.191; SE = 0.028; p < 0.001) and worst family financial situation due to the pandemic (β = 0.083; SE = 0.024; p = 0.001) predicted the increase in EPDS from T1 to T2. Conclusion: Almost two years after the beginning of the pandemic, the prevalence of depressive symptoms among the women was higher than before the pandemic. The deterioration of ones' own perception of quality of overall health and worst family financial situation due to the pandemic are proxies for the effect of COVID-19 pandemic (the true exposure of interest) in the women mental health. Restrictive immigration policies may adversely affect the health of Latina mothers and their infants. We hypothesized that undocumented Latina mothers and their US born children would have worse birth outcomes and healthcare utilization following the November 2016 election. We used a controlled interrupted time series to estimate the impact of the 2016 presidential election on low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, maternal depression, well child visit attendance, cancelled visits, and emergency department (ED) visits among infants born to Latina mothers on emergency Medicaid, a proxy for undocumented immigration status. There was a 5.8% (95% CI: −0.99%, 12.5%) increase in LBW and 4.6% (95% CI: −1.8%, 10.9%) increase in preterm births immediately after the 2016 election compared to controls. While these findings were not statistically significant at p < 0.05, the majority of our data suggest worsened birth outcomes among undocumented Latina mothers after the election, consistent with larger prior studies. There was no difference in well child or ED visits. While restrictive policies may have contributed to worse birth outcomes among undocumented Latina mothers, our findings suggest that Latino families still attend infants' scheduled visits. Background: Recent legislative decisions in the United States have encouraged discussion about national parental leave programs. Currently, over 47% of the United States workforce is female. However, the United States is the only nation of the 37 member countries in the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) to have no national requirement for maternity leave. The first few months of a child's life are vital to their physical and mental development. Likewise, a gradual return to pre-partum functioning is important for a newly postpartum woman. While it has been shown that maternity leave positively impacts various measures of maternal and infant mental and physical health, we lack consensus on the optimal length of paid or unpaid maternity leave. Accordingly, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the optimal length of paid or unpaid maternity leave to encourage maternal and infant mental and physical health in the United States. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to synthesize and critically evaluate the current research investigating the association between maternity leave and maternal and infant mental and physical health using the Preferred Reporting in Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Databases EMBASE, PsycInfo, and PubMed were searched using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies scale assessed the methodological quality of the included eligible studies. The magnitude of heterogeneity between-study was tested using The Cochrane χ2 test and the Moran's I2 statistic. Possible publication bias was assessed through the funnel plot and the Egger regression test. A p-value of < 0.10 will be considered as an indication for the existence of potential publication bias. All statistical analyses were carried out with Stata software version 15. Results: A total of 21 studies were analyzed. It was found that longer maternity leave may decrease rates of maternal mental and physical health complaints. It was also found that longer maternity leave leads to more positive mother–child interactions, decreased infant mortality, and longer periods of breastfeeding. Conclusion: Maternity leave of 12 weeks or more confers the greatest benefit for mothers and their infants. Significance: What is already known about this topic? It is known that maternity leave enhances maternal and infant mental and physical well-being. A recent comprehensive review article outlined the importance of political policy to support national paid maternity leave in the United States. What does this study add? Purpose: To determine factors associated with postpartum quality of life (QOL). Methods: An analytic cross-sectional design was used in this study, and data was collected from December 2019 to March 2020. Participants were 252 postpartum women visiting eight governmental primary healthcare centers in Madinah city, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment-BREF, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Sleep problems were assessed using an item from the Prime-MD Patient Health Questionnaire. Results: Maternal age between 26 and 35 years had a significant independent association with the physical health domain of QOL (p <.01). Postpartum depression was significantly associated with lower QOL in all dimensions (p <.01). In addition, sleep problems were associated with three out of the four QOL domains (p <.05). The significant other subscale of the MSPSS was significantly associated with higher QOL scores in all dimensions (p <.01); additionally, family and friends subscales of the MSPSS were significantly associated with the social domain of QOL (p <.01). Conclusions: Maternal QOL, during the postpartum period, showed negative associations with age, postpartum depression, and sleep disturbances. The COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent lockdown have dramatically impacted families' life, raising serious concerns about children's emotional wellbeing. However, few studies have investigated whether the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on psychological adjustment in youngest can be moderated by maternal mood and, to our knowledge, none of them has adopted a longitudinal design. The main aim of the current study was to explore if the intensity and directionality of maternal mood symptoms moderated the trajectory of emotional and behavioural problems in Italian pre-schoolers from pre- to during the lockdown adopting a longitudinal design. To assess maternal anxiety and depression symptoms, the EPDS and the STAI-Y were filled in by 94 and 88 women before the lockdown, when their children were 1 (Wave P1) and 3 years old (Wave P2), respectively, and by 74 women during the lockdown, when their children were 4 years old (Wave L). Mothers also filled in the CBCL/1 ½–5 to assess their children's emotional and behavioural problems at each assessment wave. As a whole, children's emotional and behavioural problems significantly increased from pre- to during the lockdown. Furthermore, maternal mood moderated this trajectory. In particular, greater maternal mood symptoms were significantly associated with a greater increase in emotional reactive, anxious-depressed, withdrawn and aggressive symptoms during the lockdown. These results contribute to shed light on the role played by maternal emotional wellbeing in buffering the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on children's behavioural development. Albeit preliminary, the current findings highlight the need to provide timely psychological interventions to distressed mothers to help their children to better cope with the effects of the pandemic. Maternal prenatal distress (i.e., anxiety and depressive symptoms) increases the risk for childhood behavioral and emotional problems. So far, the potential role of maternal bonding in this association still needs further study. Maternal prenatal distress can affect the development of maternal bonding from pregnancy onwards. Maternal prenatal and postnatal bonding in turn have been shown to predict child behavioral functioning. We aimed to investigate whether maternal prenatal and postnatal bonding mediate the association between maternal prenatal distress and toddlers' internalizing and externalizing problems. Data from a Dutch prospective longitudinal sample (N = 666) were used to conduct single and multiple mediation models. Mothers reported prenatal anxiety (State Anxiety Inventory) and prenatal depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) at 24 weeks' gestation and maternal prenatal bonding (Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale) at 32 weeks' gestation. At 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum mothers completed questionnaires to assess maternal postnatal bonding (Maternal Postnatal Attachment Scale). Mothers reported child internalizing and externalizing problems (Child Behavior Checklist) at 28 months postpartum. Maternal prenatal and postnatal bonding mediated the link between maternal prenatal anxiety and child externalizing problems but not internalizing problems. Only maternal bonding 6 months postpartum mediated the link between maternal prenatal depressive symptoms and child internalizing problems but not externalizing problems. Our study showed that maternal postnatal bonding more consistently mediated links between measures of maternal prenatal distress and child behavioral and emotional problems than maternal prenatal bonding. Interventions reducing maternal prenatal distress and promoting maternal bonding should be developed.
