Electronic contract signing requires the design of protocols that guarantee that the exchange is fair. In the past 5 years, we have observed that trusted third parties (TTPs) can be replaced by blockchain. However, none of the analyzed blockchain-based solutions meets the abuse-freeness requirement (established by Garay et al. in 1999), i.e., that neither party has the power to decide whether the protocol terminates or aborts. In this article, we present the first blockchain-based contract signing protocol that meets the abuse-freeness requirement. We analyze the economic impact that the use of blockchain has on the participants of a contract signing, concluding that the solution is both technically feasible and cost effective. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) causes caregiver burden on families with children affected with it. Our study aimed to explore this multifaceted burden in the Indian context. In this cross-sectional study, we administered the Hindi translated CAREGIVER questionnaire to adult caregivers in the families of JIA patients ≤ 18 years. The responses to the 28 items were used to calculate the burden scores in various dimensions. The relationship of the global burden scores with demographic and socioeconomic factors were analysed. Non parametric tests were used. Two hundred twenty-one caregivers participated with a median age of 39 years (IQR 32–45). This included 116 fathers, 50 mothers, 32 brothers, 18 uncles, three grandfathers, one sister, and one grandmother. The JIA patients had a median age of 15 (12–17) years, and the male-to-female ratio was 3.2:1. Enthesitis-related arthritis was the predominant subtype (72.4%). Most caregivers (70.6%) expressed sadness at diagnosis, and 29.9% continued to express sadness. Nearly two-thirds (65.6%) had to borrow money from others. More than half (59.3%) of the caregivers neglected their health, and 9.0% became sick. Male gender of the child, systemic JIA subtype, low socioeconomic status, high disease activity, extra-articular damage, high parent-reported disease activity and poor quality of life were associated with higher global caregiver burden. JIA has a significant emotional, social, economic, and labour impact on caregivers. Economic and psychosocial support needs to be given to family caregivers caring for children with JIA. The digitization of agriculture is widely discussed today. But despite proven benefits, its acceptance in agricultural practice remains low. In small-structured areas, this trend is even more pronounced. There are even known cases where farmers initially purchased and used technology, but then stopped using it due to lack of profitability or other reasons. Interestingly, despite extensive research on precision agriculture technologies (PATs), the processes of adoption and phase-out with their associated economic impacts have never been studied. This paper provides a methodological framework for evaluating the economics of PAT deployment, taking into account changes during the period of use; the framework provides decision rules for determining the appropriate time to phase out technology. Using a selected PAT, a farm model, and defined entry and exit scenarios, it was shown that farms with outdated technology and farms with retrofittable technology are at a significant economic disadvantage during implementation compared to farms already using technology suitable for site-specific fertilization or farms relying on the use of a contractor. And even in the event of a phase-out, the two disadvantaged starting conditions face significantly greater uncertainties and costs. Moreover, the decision to phase out in time is difficult, as making an informed and fact-based decision is not possible after the first year of use. The Himalayan region and its surrounding area are one of the most seismically active zones in the world which have significant economic and societal impact. It governs the seismicity of highly populous countries like India, China, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Afghanistan which account for more than 40% population of the world. Therefore, the complex interaction between seismic parameters and transient seismic events needs to be thoroughly addressed at the regional scale. This study highlights the spatial distribution of earthquake hazard parameters and the temporal variation in seismicity of the Himalayas and its nearby regions by employing the maximum likelihood approach using historical records as well as instrumentally recorded earthquake data of the years 1900–2021. An empirical relation is developed to convert the body wave magnitude (Mb) and surface wave magnitude (Ms) to moment magnitude (Mw). The seismic parameters, namely maximum regional magnitude (Mmax), b-value, and mean seismicity rate (λ0), are estimated for 13 defined zones. Further, the seismic behaviours of the study area are evaluated through the return periods (RP) of earthquakes and the fractal dimension (Dc) of the individual zone. Considering the temporal variation of seismicity and RP of Mw ≥ 6, a new index , i.e. earthquake susceptibility index (ESI6), is developed to identify the zones which are susceptible to Mw ≥ 6 earthquakes. The zones: Central Himalayas 2 (CH2), Western Himalayas (WH), North of MCT 1 (NMCT1) and South of MCT 2 (SMCT2) are identified to be highly susceptible to earthquakes of Mw ≥ 6. The present analysis will motivate researchers and engineers from government and non-government organizations to collaborate for improved policy making in the seismically active Himalayan region concerning land-use planning, insurance, and catastrophe preparation. Regional population mortality correlates with regional socioeconomic development. This study aimed to identify the key socioeconomic factors influencing mortality patterns in Chinese provinces. Using data from the Seventh Population Census, we analyzed mortality patterns by gender and urban‒rural division in 31 provinces. Using a functional regression model, we assessed the influence of fourteen indicators on mortality patterns. Main findings: (1) China shows notable gender and urban‒rural mortality variations across age groups. Males generally have higher mortality than females, and rural areas experience elevated mortality rates compared to urban areas. Mortality in individuals younger than 40 years is influenced mainly by urban‒rural factors, with gender becoming more noticeable in the 40–84 age group. (2) The substantial marginal impact of socioeconomic factors on mortality patterns generally becomes evident after the age of 45, with less pronounced differences in their impact on early-life mortality patterns. (3) Various factors have age-specific impacts on mortality. Education has a negative effect on mortality in individuals aged 0–29, extending to those aged 30–59 and diminishing in older age groups. Urbanization positively influences the probability of death in individuals aged 45–54 years, while the impact of traffic accidents increases with age. Among elderly people, the effect of socioeconomic variables is smaller, highlighting the intricate and heterogeneous nature of these influences and acknowledging certain limitations. The present study attempts to spatial and temporal analysis of the reactions between urban commercial marketing and influencing economic factors in Mashhad City (Iran). For this purpose, statistical and spatial data from 18 selected commercial complexes and trading towers were collected using official documents, fieldwork observations, and surveys of some interviews for time windows of 2010 and 2020. The total annual revenue, as the commercial marketing indicator, was chosen as the dependent variable to indicate the mean productivity and profitability of shop stores in the case studies. Besides, eight factors, including commercial marketing and urban regional characteristics were chosen as independent factors. Results revealed that the mean values of commercial interest rates were recorded equal to 0.71 and 0.64 in 2010 and 2020, revealing the overall decrease in profitability of the commercial complexes within the recent decade. Despite the growing rate of construction of renewal mega projects and trading towers in the central district of Mashhad City, the marketing revenues and commercial interests had no positive relationships with city center profits in the recent decade. The land price market has severely changed the spatial structure and economy of Mashhad, such as commercial projects and marketing. It means that the main motivation for marketing in commercial complexes can be considered as regional land values instead of the traditional function of the religious city center. Cognitive radio (CR) technology is crucial for enabling dynamic spectrum management. CR allows opportunistic spectrum sharing with licensed primary radio (PR) users by allowing the so-called secondary users to dynamically access the under-utilized parts of the frequency bands that are allocated/licensed to the PR networks (PRNs). The CR system pays a utilization-dependent price to PRNs for utilizing the unused spectrum. An essential challenge in this domain is how to characterize the economic implications of spectrum sharing between the CR system and PRNs. Specifically, we consider a CR system with two competing CR service providers. This market model is known as the "duopoly model," a market structure premise that consists of two companies providing the same type of service. For such a model, we investigate the problem of maximizing the overall achieved profit in the CR system. Specifically, we mathematically formulate the profit-maximization spectrum assignment problem for the two CR providers subject to spectrum sharing, power distribution, spectrum pricing, and quality of service constraints. We demonstrate that this optimization problem is an NP-hard binary nonlinear programming problem. Therefore, we adopt a meta-heuristic optimization method based on Antlion Optimization to solve the problem suboptimally. Introduction: The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to a marked decrease in elective surgical volume and orthopaedic device sales. The aim of this paper was to quantify this decrease and the related financial impact on the largest hip/knee arthroplasty companies by: (1) tracking individual hip/knee company valuations; (2) calculating aggregate changes in overall hip/knee arthroplasty market valuations; and (3) quantifying quarterly hip/knee revenues relative to prior years. Materials and methods: Financial data on the top five hip/knee arthroplasty companies by size between January 1, 2019, and October 1, 2020, was collected from a Wall Street financial database, S&P Capital IQ. Changes in valuation of these companies were compared against benchmark market indices, the S&P500 and Vanguard Healthcare ETF. U.S. hip/knee arthroplasty-specific revenue for Q1 and Q2 of 2019 and 2020 was collected from Securities Exchange Commission 10-Q forms. Quarterly revenue changes were calculated using 1-2Q19 revenues as baselines and aggregate to approximate the overall hip/knee arthroplasty market. Results: The top five hip/knee companies lost $179.2 billion (32.7% loss) in market value from pre COVID-19 market highs to COVID-19 market lows (March 2020), while S&P500 and Vanguard Healthcare ETF decreased 36.1 and 33.2%, respectively. From market lows to October 2020, arthroplasty companies rallied 38.6% while the S&P500 and Vanguard Healthcare ETF regained 43.5 and 56.4% respectively. Notably, this occurred while aggregate 1Q/2Q20 revenue lagged 7.1/41.8% relative to 2019, with an overall decrease of $1.58B (24.8%). Conclusions: Similar to the overall market and healthcare sector, the top five hip/knee arthroplasty companies have recovered from their COVID market lows. Our results reveal that the valuations of hip/knee companies remained robust during COVID, even as revenues fell, likely due to strong investor confidence in the industry outlook and the greater overall healthcare system utilization. Background: Mild steel is globally used in the construction, manufacturing and engineering industries due to its low cost and appreciable stability. Despite its application, mild steel often loses its structural integrity, attractiveness and performance because of corrosion, a spontaneous process with serious negative global safety, economic and environmental impacts. However, inhibitors are frequently used in corrosion-inhibitive fluids to provide temporary corrosion protection. Various organic and inorganic molecules display inhibitory characteristics; nevertheless, most of these are remarkably lethal to humans and their surroundings. Therefore, the application of such molecules is limited in recent applications. As of today, there has been a continuous and ever-increasing curiosity about the use of green corrosion inhibitors of plant origin. The current article discusses the kinds of corrosion, corrosion progression and plant-based mild steel corrosion inhibitors. Evidently, diverse plant sources have continuously been sufficiently used as sensible protectors for mild steel deterioration. Short conclusion: Reports reveal an ever-increasing shift from the previous traditional synthetic to plant-based natural corrosion inhibitors in corrosive media. While women globally make up nearly half of the fisheries workforce, their contribution to the sector has long been overlooked with implications for fisheries management. To assess women's participation in small-scale fisheries (SSF) management and related socio-cultural, environmental, and economic impacts, we conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed literature (n = 124 case studies). Women had no or limited participation in more than 80% of the examined case studies reporting their participation level in SSF management. Women's exclusion from SSF management resulted in negative outcomes, whereas their active participation was associated with various positive impacts at multiple scales. Most of the documented impacts were socio-cultural, suggesting a gap in documenting environmental impacts stemmed from women's participation in SSF management. Importantly, most impacts reported affected the social-ecological system scale, suggesting that gender inclusion may contribute to improving the management of SSF social-ecological systems. We conclude by highlighting the need to foster gender perspectives in data collection methods used in fisheries research, in SSF management, and in ecological research on SSF social-ecological systems. The vegetable oil degumming process plays a critical role in refining edible oil. Phospholipids (PL) removal from crude extracted soybean oil (SBO) by the enzymatic degumming process has been investigated in this work. Enzymatic degumming of extracted SBO with microbial phospholipase A1 PLA-1 Quara LowP and Lecitase Ultra enzymes have also been studied comparatively. The main novelty of our work is the use of the enzymatic degumming process on an industrial scale (600 tons a day). Many parameters have been discussed to understand in detail the factors affecting oil losses during the degumming process. The factors such as chemical conditioning (CC) by phosphoric acid 85%, the enzyme dosage mg/kg (feedstock dependent), the enzymatic degumming reaction time, and the characteristics of the plant-processed SBO have been discussed in detail. As a main point, the degummed oil with a phosphorus content of < 10 mg/kg increases yield. Quara LowP and Lecitase Ultra enzymes are not specific for certain phospholipids PL; however, the conversion rate depends on the SBO phospholipid composition. After 4 h, over 99% of Phospholipids were degraded to their lysophospholipid LPL (lysolecithin). The results showed a significant effect of operating parameters and characteristics of different origins of SBO, fatty acids FFA content, Phosphorus content and total divalent metals (Calcium Ca, Magnesium Mg and Iron Fe mg/kg) content on the oil loss. The benefit of using enzymatic degumming of vegetable oils rather than traditional chemical refining is that the enzymatic degumming process reduces total oil loss. This decrease is known as enzymatic yield. The enzymatic degumming also decreases wastewater and used chemicals and running costs; moreover, it enables physical refining by lowering the residue phosphorus to < 10 mg/kg. The literature on urban vitality tends to focus on the built environment. This paper argues that some important processes in shaping vitality may be overlooked without examining the intensity and diversity of economic and human activities. Using newly developed spatial big data and adopting the methods of multi-indicator measurement and spatial analysis methods, we analyzed the pattern of urban vitality in Chongqing, a provincial city in western China and, on this basis, evaluated the creation and maintenance of urban vitality from the economic and human activities perspective. Our findings indicate that the impacts of economic and human activities are positive and significant. Among the three intensity and diversity indicators, economic intensity and population density show an effect on urban vitality stronger than that of economic diversity. However, economic diversity has the strongest superposition or interactive effect, and is thus an important foundation dynamic. The positive effect of population density on urban vitality is largely a result of Chongqing's jobs-housing balance. The case of Chongqing highlights the importance of topographic features, historical inheritance, large-scale migration, and cultural activities in shaping the distinctive vitality pattern of a city. This study contends that the creation and maintenance of urban vitality can not be fully explained without incorporating the impacts of economic and human activities. Scyphozoan medusae are critical components of marine ecosystems; however, our knowledge on their population dynamics and life history needed to understand their role on ecosystem functioning is relatively scarce. We used data from fish-stock assessment cruises (1993–2013), artisanal fisheries and stranding events (2006–2007), to assess spatio-temporal variation in biomass, growth and reproduction, of a large and abundant scyphomedusae (Lychnorhiza lucerna) in a productive estuarine ecosystem (Río de la Plata Estuary, RLPE) (35°S-57°W) from the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Medusae consisted of sexually mature individuals only, occurring consistently during austral summer. Medusae biomass displayed a patchy distribution, concentrating mainly in two geographically different hot-spots associated to a frontal feature (turbidity front) of the RLPE. Individual size, relative fecundity, and degree of gonad development varied significantly between hot-spots. Biomass varied greatly among years. Bell diameter, wet weight, and percentage of fully developed oocytes increased during the first half of the summer but decreased during the second half of it. Our results suggest high predictability of the period of occurrence and the distribution of L. lucerna in the RLPE. Physical mechanisms of medusa aggregation, potential effects of medusae on zooplankton dynamics, fisheries production, and conservation of sea turtles, as well as their potential for the development of a local jellyfish fishery, are here discussed. This work provides novel information on patterns of distribution, growth and development of L. lucerna medusae, which can help to enhance our understanding of the role of large medusae on ecosystem functioning of marine ecosystems worldwide. In this study, we introduce an experimental approach to study the causal impact of trust on economic performance. We ask if trust can serve as a coordination device to help poor economies escape a poverty trap and, if so, whether such an impact is universal regardless of their initial levels of development. We follow Lei and Noussair (2002, 2007) and design a decentralized market economy that has the structure of an optimal growth model where output is allocated between consumption and saving over a sequence of periods. As in Lei and Noussair (2007), a threshold externality is introduced to generate two equilibria where the Pareto-inferior equilibrium is considered as a poverty trap. We find that trust matters in that it is more likely for high-trust economies, generated with an endogenous matching procedure, to escape the poverty trap. But we also find that the likelihood to escape depends partially on the initial endowment condition. Trust has a much weaker impact on the economies whose initial capital and output are below the Pareto-inferior equilibrium, suggesting that formal institutions and/or policy measures may be needed to engineer a "big push" for these least developed economies. In recent years, jassids have become a real problem for cotton growing in Ivory Coast. It is important to investigate the causes of this problem. The aim of this study was to highlight the diversity of jassid species and their impact on cotton growing in Ivory Coast. The collections carried out in 2021 identified three species. Jacobiasca lybica (Bergevin & Zanon, 1922) is the most abundant, with proportions ranging from 73.3 to 93.3% depending on the site. The other two species are Empoasca papayae (Oman, 1937) (8.3%) and Empoasca facialis (Jacobi, 1912) (5%). In 2022, collections revealed the invasion of a new species, Amrasca biguttula (Shiraki, 1913), which became dominant with proportions of 90 to 100% depending on the site. Two other species, Jacobiasca lybica (Bergevin & Zanon, 1922) (2.7%) and Empoasca facialis (Jacobi, 1912) (1.3%), cohabit with Amrasca biguttula (Shiraki, 1913). Thus, while the damage noted in 2021 was attributable to Jacobiasca lybica (Bergevin & Zanon, 1922), that observed in 2022 is essentially due to Amrasca biguttula (Shiraki, 1913), with incidences exceeding the economic impact threshold. The North-East of the cotton basin was the area most affected by attacks by these two species. The results of the study reveal significant changes in jassid species composition and climatic conditions in the cotton-growing areas of Ivory Coast, from 1 year to the next. Economic costs of climate change are conventionally assessed at the aggregated global and national levels, while adaptation is local. When present, regionalised assessments are confined to direct damages, hindered by both data and models' limitations. This article goes beyond the aggregated analysis to explore direct and indirect economic consequences of sea level rise (SLR) at regional and sectoral levels in Europe. Using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model and novel datasets, we estimate the distribution of losses and gains across regions and sectors. A comparison of a high-end scenario against a no-climate-impact baseline suggests a GDP loss of 1.26% (€871.8 billion) for the whole EU&UK. Conversely our refined assessments show that some coastal regions lose 9.56–20.84% of GDP, revealing striking regional disparities. Inland regions grow due to the displaced demand from coastal areas, but the GDP gains are small (0–1.13%). While recovery benefits the construction sector, public services and industry face significant downturns. We show that prioritising recovery of critical sectors locally reduces massive regional GDP losses, at negligible costs to the overall European economy. Our analysis traces regional economic restructuring triggered by SLR, underscoring the necessity of region-specific adaptation policies that embrace uneven geographic impacts and unique sectoral profiles to inform resilient strategy design. Current approach to identify BRCA 1/2 carriers in the general population is ineffective as most of the carriers remain undiagnosed. Radiomics is an emerging tool for large scale quantitative analysis of features from standard diagnostic imaging and has been applied also to identify gene mutational status. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical and economic impact of integrating a radiogenomics model with clinical and family history data in identifying BRCA mutation carriers in the general population. This cost-effective analysis compares three different approaches to women selection for BRCA testing: established clinical criteria/family history (model 1); established clinical criteria/family history and the currently available radiogenomic model (49% sensitivity and 87% specificity) based on ultrasound images (model 2); same approach used in model 2 but simulating an improvement of the performances of the radiogenomic model (80% sensitivity and 95% specificity) (model 3). All models were trained with literature data. Direct costs were calculated according to the rates currently used in Italy. The analysis was performed simulating different scenarios on the generation of 18-year-old girls in Italy (274,000 people). The main outcome was to identify the most effective model comparing the number of years of BRCA-cancer healthy life expectancy (HLYs). An incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was also derived to determine the cost in order to increase BRCA carriers-healthy life span by 1 year. Compared to model 1, model 2 increases the detection rate of BRCA carriers by 41.8%, reduces the rate of BRCA-related cancers by 23.7%, generating over a 62-year observation period a cost increase by 2.51 €/Year/Person. Moreover, model 3 further increases BRCA carriers detection (+ 68.3%) and decrease in BRCA-related cancers (− 38.4%) is observed compared to model 1. Model 3 increases costs by 0.7 €/Year/Person. After one generation, the estimated ICER in the general population amounts to about 3800€ and 653€ in model 2 and model 3 respectively. Model 2 has a massive effect after only one generation in detecting carriers in the general population with only a small cost increment. The clinical impact is limited mainly due to the current low acceptance rate of risk-reducing surgeries. A global disaster, such as the recent Covid-19 pandemic, affects every aspect of our lives and there is a need to investigate these highly complex phenomena if one aims to diminish their impact in the health of the population, as well as their socio-economic stability. In this paper we present an attempt to understand the role of the governmental authorities and the response of the rest of the population facing such emergencies. We present a mathematical model that takes into account the epidemiological features of the pandemic and also the actions of people responding to it, focusing only on three aspects of the system, namely, the fear of catching this serious disease, the impact on the economic activities and the compliance of the people to the mitigating measures adopted by the authorities. We apply the model to the specific case of Spain, since there are accurate data available about these three features. We focused on tourism as an example of the economic activity, since this sector of economy is one of the most likely to be affected by the restrictions imposed by the authorities, and because it represents an important part of Spanish economy. The results of numerical calculations agree with the empirical data in such a way that we can acquire a better insight of the different processes at play in such a complex situation, and also in other different circumstances. Introduction: New bone cement products have been developed attempting to shorten their setting time and thus cut down time in the operating room. This study determines whether faster-setting bone cement shortens time in the operating room, and whether the quantity used compromises postoperative TKA outcomes. Additionally, this study looks at cost analyses of the quantity of bone cement used in TKA procedures. Materials and methods: One-hundred and sixty patients at a single institution with primary TKA surgeries between January 2019 and December 2021, and a clinic follow-up of at least one year, were identified. Five cement products used in this time period were identified and categorized by fast- or slow-setting products if their set times were marketed below or above six minutes, respectively. Results: Estimated blood loss was higher in patients receiving fast-setting cements (160.0 vs 126.4 mL; p = 0.0009); however, operative time showed no difference between the cohorts (88.2 vs 89.2 min; p = 0.99). Fewer bags of cement were used for the fast cohort (1.3 vs 1.8 bags; p < 0.0001). The fast group was significantly cheaper on average per patient only when comparing between antibiotic bone cements (p = 0.007). We study the inventory review policy for a healthcare facility to minimize the impact of inevitable drug shortages. Usually, healthcare facilities do not rely on a single source of supply, and alternative mechanisms are present. When the primary supplier is not available, items are produced in-house or supplied through another supplier, albeit with additional cost. Our aim in this study is to determine how optimal inventory parameters are adjusted depending on the availability of the primary supplier. We show that an approximation provides trivial results, yet fails to capture the nuances therein. Our proposed Markov chain model overcomes these issues, and numerical results illustrate the significant economic impact of inventory parameter optimization. Furthermore, we simulate uncertainty scenarios and provide sensitivity analyses concerning fixed ordering cost for the secondary supplier, shortage frequency, shortage duration, and demand rates. Objective: Pancreatic cancer is a digestive malignancy with dismal prognosis. The advent of Heidelberg TRIANGLE dissection technique brings a turning point to improve the chance of survival. Our study aimed to evaluated the cost-effectiveness of open pancreaticoduodenectomy (OPD) versus OPD combined with TRIANGLE operation (OPD-TRIANGLE) for patients with pancreatic cancer from the perspective of healthcare system in China. Methods: Two hundred forty-six patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent OPD or OPD-TRIANGLE from January to September 2022 were enrolled in this study. We performed a decision tree model to assess clinical and economic implications of different surgical strategies. Estimation of health utilities was based on published literature, while costs were acquired from the hospitals, clinical expert consultations, and other local charge. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) was regarded as the primary outcome. Uncertainty of the findings was addressed via sensitivity analyses and scenario analyses. Results: The results indicated that OPD-TRIANGLE group yielded additional 0.0402 QALYs at an incremental cost of US$1501.83 compared with OPD group, and the corresponding ICER was US$37,358.96 per QALY. The probabilities of OPD-TRIANGLE as the prior option were 52.8% at the WTP threshold of 60,000 US$/QALY. The main factors lined with costs incorporating total medical costs and operation-related costs. With 5–20% price reduction of OPD-TRIANGLE, the outcomes were also economically attractive. Conclusion: The findings of this population-based study suggested that OPD-TRIANGLE was likely to be cost-effective for patients with pancreatic cancer when compared against OPD. Ticks are important ectoparasites responsible for the transmission of several pathogens with significant medical, veterinary, and economic impacts. Climate and social changes have generated substantial changes in ticks' distribution, abundance, and activity patterns, including ticks belonging to the Hyalomma marginatum species. Knowledge on the genetic structure and dynamics of H. marginatum populations might contribute to a better understanding of their current and future evolution under the effects of anthropogenic factors and eco-climatic changes. In the present study, we investigated the genetic structure and phylogenetic distribution of H. marginatum across three bioclimatic regions in Tunisia using two mitochondrial markers (16S and 12S rRNA). The molecular investigations were based on 47 adult H. marginatum ticks collected from humid, upper semi-arid, and sub-humid regions of Tunisia. Our results revealed a genetic diversity of 0.278% and 0.809% using the 16S and 12S markers, respectively. The low genetic diversity that we observed raises the hypothesis of a bottleneck event occasioned by a reduction in the size of the tick population under the effects of environmental factors and/or human activities. This hypothesis is supported by the population's demographic history analysis, which revealed a clear deviation from neutrality and supports the occurrence of a bottleneck event followed by a demographic expansion. The fact that most 16S and 12S variability was present in the ticks from the humid bioclimatic zone may suggest that those ticks represent the ancestral population. The physical condition of an occupant's home represents a significant factor in determining the dweller's overall quality of life. This paper provides a statistical framework for measuring housing quality in an urban area through a standardized index. This index is constructed using principal component analysis, incorporating demographic, geographic, and economic factors from the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey. This metric allows for investigating differences in housing quality based upon ownership status. Analysis of the index demonstrates that renters face more housing quality issues than owners. Several of the index's input variables driving these differences were found to exhibit varying effects on housing quality over time, possibly due to events such as the 2008 financial crisis. Implementing this novel statistical framework, housing quality indices can be constructed for other cities to examine housing disparities and inform policies aimed at improving quality of life for urban residents. The provision of informal (unpaid) care can impose significant 'spillover effects' on carers, and accounting for these effects is consistent with the efficiency and equity objectives of health technology assessment (HTA). Inclusion of these effects in health economic models, particularly carer health-related quality of life (QOL), can have a substantial impact on net quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gains and the relative cost effectiveness of new technologies. Typically, consideration of spillover effects improves the value of a technology, but in some circumstances, consideration of spillover effects can lead to situations whereby life-extending treatments for patients may be considered cost ineffective due to their impact on carer QOL. In this piece we revisit the classic 'QALY trap' and introduce an analogous 'carer QALY trap' which may have practical implications for economic evaluations where the inclusion of carer QOL reduces incremental QALY gains. Such results may align with a strict QALY-maximisation rule, however we consider the extent to which this principle may be at odds with the preferences of carers themselves (and possibly society more broadly), potentially leading decision makers into the carer QALY trap as a result. Background and Objective: The disease burden of sickle cell anemia (SCA) in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries is substantial, with many children dying without an established diagnosis or proper treatment. The global burden of SCA is increasing each year, making therapeutic intervention a high priority. Hydroxyurea is the only disease-modifying therapy with proven feasibility and efficacy suitable for SSA; however, no one has quantified the health economic implications of its use. Therefore, from the perspective of the health care provider, we estimated the incremental cost-effectiveness of hydroxyurea as a fixed-dose regimen or maximum tolerated dose (MTD) regimen, versus SCA care without hydroxyurea. Methods: We estimated the cost of providing outpatient treatment at a pediatric sickle cell clinic in Kampala, Uganda. These estimates were used in a discrete-event simulation model to project mean costs (2021 US$), disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and consumption of blood products per patient (450 mL units), for patients between 9 months and 18 years of age. We calculated cost-effectiveness as the ratio of incremental costs over incremental DALYs averted, discounted at 3% annually. To test the robustness of our findings, and the impact of uncertainty, we conducted probabilistic and one-way sensitivity analyses, scenario analysis, and price threshold analyses. Results: Hydroxyurea treatment averted an expected 1.37 DALYs and saved US$ 191 per patient if administered at the MTD, compared with SCA care without hydroxyurea. In comparison, hydroxyurea at a fixed dose averted 0.80 DALYs per patient at an incremental cost of US$ 2. The MTD strategy saved 11.2 (95% CI 11.1–11.4) units of blood per patient, compared with 9.1 (95% CI 9.0–9.2) units of blood per patient at the fixed-dose alternative. Conclusions: Hydroxyurea at MTD is likely to improve quality of life and reduce the consumption of blood products for children with SCA living in Uganda. Compared with a fixed dose regimen, treatment dosing at MTD is likely to be a cost-effective treatment for SCA, using realistic ranges of hydroxyurea costs that are relevant across SSA. Compared with no use of the drug, hydroxyurea could lead to substantial net savings per patient, while reducing the disease morbidity and mortality and increasing quality of life. Background: Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease characterized by recurrent seizures. We investigated real-world management of epilepsy across treatment lines in Spain, including healthcare resource use (HRU) and associated costs. Methods: This was a retrospective study of real-life data from epilepsy patients prescribed antiseizure medication (ASM) between January 2016 and December 2021. Patients were grouped according to their line of treatment (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th +) during the recruitment period. Demographic and clinical characteristics, comorbidities and concomitant medications were analyzed during the baseline period (6 months before starting treatment line); antiepileptic treatments, concomitant medications, HRU and associated costs were analyzed during follow-up. Results: The study included 5006 patients. Treatment duration decreased as treatment lines progressed (mean ± SD progression time: 523.2 ± 279.1 days from 1st to 2nd line, 351.6 ± 194.4 days from 2nd to 3rd line; 272.7 ± 139.3 days from 3rd to 4th + line). Significant HRU differences were found with subsequent treatment lines, including an increase in hospital admissions and patients on sick leave. Mean (95% CI) adjusted total costs per patient were €2974/year (2773–3175) in the 1st line and €5735/year (5043–6428) in the 4th + line. There was an increase in adjusted direct and total costs with subsequent treatment lines; the mean difference in total costs between cohorts was €2761 (p < 0.001). The highest direct costs were associated with epilepsy medication, days at the hospital and specialist visits. Abstract: Developed countries are increasingly dependent on international trade to meet seafood requirements, which has important social, environmental, and economic implications. After becoming an independent coastal state following Brexit, the UK faces increased trade barriers and changes in seafood availability and cost. We compiled a long-term (120-year) dataset of UK seafood production (landings and aquaculture), imports, and exports, and assessed the influence of policy change and consumer preference on domestic production and consumption. In the early twentieth century, distant-water fisheries met an increasing demand for large, flaky fish such as cod and haddock that are more abundant in northerly waters. Accordingly, from 1900 to 1975, the UK fleet supplied almost 90% of these fish. However, policy changes in the mid-1970s such as the widespread establishment of Exclusive Economic Zones and the UK joining the European Union resulted in large declines in distant-water fisheries and a growing mismatch between seafood production versus consumption in the UK. While in 1975, UK landings and aquaculture accounted for 89% of seafood consumed by the British public, by 2019 this was only 40%. The combination of policy changes and staunch consumer preferences for non-local species has resulted in today's situation, where the vast majority of seafood consumed in the UK is imported, and most seafood produced domestically is exported. There are also health considerations. The UK public currently consumes 31% less seafood than is recommended by government guidelines, and even if local species were more popular, total domestic production would still be 73% below recommended levels. In the face of climate change, global overfishing and potentially restrictive trade barriers, promoting locally sourced seafood and non-seafood alternatives would be prudent to help meet national food security demands, and health and environmental targets. Cloudy skies reduce image quality obtained from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) due to variable lighting conditions imposed on the surface. This study provides a novel approach for identifying temporal windows of opportunity that show promise for avoiding such reductions. The total available hours for flight within a growing season were determined based on an hourly assessment of sky condition. In the study region, this represents total hours from 9 AM to 3 PM, March 1 through September 30. The most promising windows were early and late season, and early morning and late afternoon. Monthly windows were well aligned with crop decision making for emergence. An economic case study was conducted to determine the impact of sky condition on per hectare custom rate for agricultural applications of UAV. Both full-season and early-season-only operational scenarios were investigated. Use of UAV was financially favorable despite the frequent presence of poor sky conditions thought to reduce image quality (60% of total hours). A custom rate of < US$3.65 ha−1 for three flights accommodated a range of acceptable returns on investment over a 3 year period. Poor sky conditions increased the average custom rate by at most US$0.89 ha−1 in the early-season-only scenario and US$0.77 ha−1 over the full season. These rates are competitive with manned aircraft for average fields in the study region (80 ha). Although the initial perception was that clouds would reduce the potential for UAV operations when high image quality is required, economic analyses did not support this preliminary assumption. Background: Identifying behavioral pathways to smoking cessation in high-risk populations, such as low-income maternal smokers, could reduce tobacco disparities. The previous "BLiSS" multilevel intervention trial demonstrated efficacy of the BLiSS intervention in facilitating low-income maternal smokers' bioverified abstinence. This present study examined four putative pathways measured at 3-month end of treatment (Time 2) that could account for the observed intervention effect on smoking abstinence through 12 months (Time 2 – Time 3). Methods: Nutritionists in community clinics delivering safety net nutrition promotion programs across Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, were trained by trial principal investigators to deliver a brief tobacco intervention informed by the American Academy of Pediatrics best practice guidelines ("Ask, Advise, Refer [AAR]"). After referral, 396 eligible participants were randomized to either a multimodal behavioral intervention (AAR + MBI) or a parallel attention control (AAR + control). Random effects regression analysis tested mediation. Results: Elimination of children's tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) at Time 2 was the only significant mediator of longitudinal smoking abstinence through Time 3. AAR + MBI mothers were more likely to eliminate their children's TSE by Time 2 (OR = 2.11, 95%CI 1.30, 3.42), which was significantly associated with Time 3 abstinence (OR = 6.72, CI 2.28, 19.80). Modeling showed a significant total effect of AAR + MBI on abstinence (OR = 6.21, CI 1.86, 20.71), a direct effect of AAR + MBI on abstinence (OR = 4.80, CI 1.45, 15.94) and an indirect effect through TSE elimination (OR = 1.29, CI 1.06, 1.57). Conclusions: Integrating smoking cessation interventions with counseling prior to the quit attempt that is designed to facilitate adoption of smokefree home policies and efforts to eliminate children's TSE could enhance the likelihood of long-term abstinence in populations of smokers with elevated challenges quitting smoking. Background and aims: Relapses are an important clinical feature of multiple sclerosis (MS) that result in temporary negative changes in quality of life (QoL), measured by health state utilities (HSUs) (disutilities). We aimed to quantify disutilities of relapse in relapsing remitting MS (RRMS), secondary progressive MS (SPMS), and relapse onset MS [ROMS (including both RRMS and SPMS)] and examine these values by disability severity using four multi-attribute utility instruments (MAUIs). Methods: We estimated (crude and adjusted and stratified by disability severity) disutilities (representing the mean difference in HSUs of 'relapse' and 'no relapse' groups as well as 'unsure' and 'no relapse' groups) in RRMS (n = 1056), SPMS (n = 239), and ROMS (n = 1295) cohorts from the Australian MS Longitudinal Study's 2020 QoL survey, using the EQ-5D-5L, AQoL-8D, EQ-5D-5L-Psychosocial, and SF-6D MAUIs. Results: Adjusted mean overall disutilities of relapse in RMSS/SPMS/ROMS were − 0.101/− 0.149/− 0.129 (EQ-5D-5L), − 0.092/− 0.167/− 0.113 (AQoL-8D), − 0.080/− 0.139/− 0.097 (EQ-5D-5L-Psychosocial), and − 0.116/− 0.161/− 0.130 (SF-6D), approximately 1.5 times higher in SPMS than in RRMS, in all MAUI. All estimates were statistically significant and/or clinically meaningful. Adjusted disutilities of RRMS and ROMS demonstrated a U-shaped relationship between relapse disutilities and disability severity. Relapse disutilities were higher in 'severe' disability than 'mild' and 'moderate' in the SPMS cohort. Conclusion: MS-related relapses are associated with substantial utility decrements. As the type and severity of MS influence disutility of relapse, the use of disability severity and MS-type-specific disutility inputs is recommended in future health economic evaluations of MS. Housing and homelessness are frequent issues facing domestic violence (DV) survivors and their children. Several DV programs provide transitional housing (DVTH) to address the housing needs of DV survivors and their children. Despite wide use, little is known about the impact of DVTH, especially on child and parenting related needs and outcomes. Multiple structured interviews (82) were conducted with 27 parents with minor children living in DVTH in order to explore housing program experiences. Thematic analysis techniques produced three themes and seven subthemes about DVTH impact on parenting and child wellness. Overarching themes include: (1) DVTH helps to strengthen the parent–child relationship through a focus on family connection and health; (2). Transitional housing provides an opportunity for family stability via housing, material, and economic stability; (3). Time at DVTH allows family to access a diverse range of trauma-informed resources and social support to meet family goals. Barriers to these potential impacts are explored. Implications for practice with youth and parents include the need for extensive mental health and legal advocacy, programmatic models that emphasize resources, safety and the transition to permanent housing, and build on family strengths. Using a panel of 17 Latin American countries for the period 2002–18, we study the impact of economic variables on government approval. Our empirical analysis shows that the one economic variable that appears consistently in all estimates is economic growth. More specifically, we show that for each point of additional growth, the approval rating increases between 1.1 and 1.9 percentage points. Other variables, such as inflation, government spending, and the composition of spending, are significant in only some of the specifications used, while growth is remarkably robust in all of them. Among non-economic variables, the lack of solid institutions also appears consistently as significant as well as the lagged value of government approval ratings. These results suggest that a program focused on growth has a positive influence on the popularity of the government. This conclusion is particularly relevant in a region where populism has been remarkably persistent over time and where the norm has been to run large budget deficits to gain popular support, with consequences on inflation and the external accounts. Globally, war is the major cause of displacement from the usual place of the biological environment. The war of Tigray exposed thousands of people to internal displacement and migration. Evidence has shown that displaced people and migrants shoulder the health and economic burden to ensure survival. However, evidence of the impact of the war on health and the economy related to the displaced people and their hosting communities is not documented. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the health and economic impact of the war on displaced people and the hosting community. A community-based survey was conducted among randomly selected 3572 households of 48 woredas/districts from August 06 to 30/2021 in Tigray. Each district had 4 enumeration sites and there were 20 households (HHs) to be sampled per each enumeration site. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire using face-to-face interviews of displaced and hosting household heads. The entered data is exported to SPSS version 26 statistical packages for data analysis. Summary statistics and geo-spatial analysis was computed. The war had a significant impact on the health and economy of the community of Internally Displaced People (cIDPs) and hosting households. There were 12,691 cIDPs and 3572 hosting HHs. About 12.3% had chronic illness12.3% of (cIDP) who had chronic diseases and follow-up medication was forced to stop their medication. 536 (15%) civilian family members of cIDPs were killed at their homes. During the war, 244 (6.83%) of civilian family members faced physical disability. Consequentially, 43.8% and 58.8% of respondents of cIDPs suffered from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The war had a significant amount of personal resources such as domestic animals, cereals, cars, machinery, and HH furniture was looted and vandalized by the perpetrator forces from the cIDPs and hosting HHs. The range of family size in the hosting households was 3 to 22. The war had a significant health and economic impact on both cIDPs and hosting HHs. cIDPs suffered from various illnesses and disabilities related to the war with no medical access and follow-up care leading them to stressful situations such as depression and PTSD. Economic policies for managing agricultural water use are often complicated by the challenge of using water prices as an efficient economic tool when other non-economic concerns are involved in the decision-making process. This study aims to analyse the impact of water pricing policies on preserving agricultural water resources in Iran. This study applies a system dynamics approach to simulate the system performance and behaviour of stakeholders and the economic implications. Our finding shows that water pricing policies will likely fail due to low water price elasticity and if there are lack of institutional and physical infrastructure, alternative professions, manufacturing technology, education, and training opportunities. The results also illustrate how agricultural water price increase (AWPI) fails to reduce water consumption in the absence of an adequate institutional arrangement. Also, it shows how the lack of advanced institutional infrastructure in the presence of physical infrastructure enhances pervasive overuse and destructive competition among stakeholders by increasing the area under cultivation. In the discussion, the paper portrays a way out of the decision-making body by following AWPI effects on water conservation in the agricultural sector as the most significant water consumer. It investigates the absence and subsequent presence of specific institutional conditions and evaluates training and enhancing farmers' skills and alternative career source with higher income and technology as the architecture of good environmental governance. Finally, it concludes that a series of inclusive measures must be considered to increase the elasticity of the water price. Background: This paper discusses a paradox in mental health. It manifests as a relationship between adverse "bad" effects (suffering, clinical costs, loss of productivity) in individuals and populations and advantageous "good" aspects of mental disorders. These beneficial aspects (scientific, artistic and political accomplishments) emanate at the societal level through the frequently unprecedented creativity of people suffering from mental disorders and their relatives. Such gains can contribute to societal innovation and problem-solving. Especially in times of accelerated social-ecological change, approaches are needed that facilitate best-possible mental health care but also recognize creative ideas conducive to beneficial clinical and social-ecological innovations as soon as possible. Discussion: This paper emphasizes the need to account for creativity as a crucial component in evolving mental health systems and societies. It highlights the need for wide-ranging approaches and discusses how research targeting multiple facets (e.g., brain level, cognitive neuroscience, psychiatry, neurology, socio-cultural, economic and other factors) might further our understanding of the creativity-mental disorder link and its importance for innovating mental health systems and societies. Conclusion: Our discussion clarifies that considerable research will be needed to obtain a better understanding of how creativity associated with mental disorders may help to create more sustainable societies on a fast-changing planet through innovative ideas. This paper presents a conceptual model describing the medium and long term co-evolution of natural and socio-economic subsystems of Earth. An economy is viewed as an out-of-equilibrium dissipative structure that can only be maintained with a flow of energy and matter. The distinctive approach emphasized here consists in capturing the economic impact of natural ecosystems' depletion by human activities via a pinch of thermodynamic potentials. This viewpoint allows: (i) the full-blown integration of a limited quantity of primary resources into a non-linear macrodynamics that is stock-flow consistent both in terms of matter-energy and economic transactions; (ii) the inclusion of natural and forced recycling; (iii) the inclusion of a friction term which reflects the impossibility to produce (and recycle)goods and services without exuding energy and matter wastes, and (iv) the computation of the anthropically produced entropy as a function of metabolizing intensity and frictions. Analysis and numerical computations confirm the role played by intensity and frictions as key factors for sustainability by contrast with real gdp growth—as well as the interplay between resource scarcity, income inequality, and inflation. A more egalitarian society with moderate inflation turns out to be more sustainable than an unequal society with low inflation. Our approach is flexible enough to allow for various economic models to be embedded into our thermodynamic framework. In order to study the influence of excavation sequence of three-hole parallel shield tunnel on surface settlement and segment convergence, an improved "three-stage analysis method" was proposed to calculate the surface settlement of three-hole parallel shield tunnel. Based on Peck's existing theory, this method deduced the ground settlement formula under the three-hole parallel condition, and can calculate the ground settlement more accurately. Based on the engineering background of a shield tunnel section in Jiangsu Province, a three-dimensional model of a three-hole parallel shield tunnel was established by using Flac3d software, and the three-hole parallel shield tunnel was simulated under four working conditions: right–center–left, right–left–center, right–left–right and right–center (reverse)–left. This paper analyzed the influence of tunnel excavation sequence on surface settlement, soil displacement and deformation of tunnel segments. The construction sequence was optimized based on the above influencing factors. It was found that Case 4, S-type sequential excavation, produced the least ground settlement. The surface settlement value caused by S-type excavation sequence was only 11.41 mm, and the convergence value of the segments generated by S-type excavation sequence was relatively small. Considering the economic factors such as construction efficiency and benefit, the S-shaped excavation sequence was better. It is without question that the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the U.S. economy. Stay-at-home orders led to reduced vehicular traffic and widespread declines in anthropogenic emissions (e.g., nitrogen oxides (NOx)). This study is the first to explore the potential consequences of O3 changes resulting from the economic shutdown in the United States on soybean crop yields for 2020. The pandemic's impact on surface O3 is quantified using the NOAA's National Air Quality Forecasting Capability (NAQFC), which is based on the Community Multi-Scale Air Quality (CMAQ) model for May–July 2020. The "would-be", 2020 level business-as-usual (BAU) emissions are compared to a simulation that uses representative COVID-19 (C19) emissions. For each emissions scenario, crop exposures are calculated using the AOT40 cumulative exposure index and then combined with county-level soybean production totals to determine regional yield losses. Exposure changes ranged between – 2 and 2 ppmVhr−1. It was further shown that increased exposures (0.5 to 1.10 ppmVhr−1) in the Southeast U.S. counteracted decreased exposures (0.8 to 0.5 ppmVhr−1) in the other soybean-producing regions. As a result, corresponding yield improvements counteracted yield losses around the Mississippi River Valley and allowed for minimal improvements in soybean production loss totaling $6.5 million over CONUS. Attention bias confers risk for anxiety development, however, the influence of sociodemographic variables on the relationship between attention bias and anxiety remains unclear. We examined the association between attention bias and anxiety among rural Latinx youth and investigated potential moderators of this relationship. Clinical symptoms, demographic characteristics, and a performance-based measure of attention bias were collected from 66 rural Latinx youth with clinical levels of anxiety (33.3% female; Mage = 11.74; 92.4% Latinx, 7.6% Mixed Latinx). No moderating effects for age or gender were found. Youth below the poverty line displayed an attention bias away from threat in comparison to youth above the poverty line, who displayed an attention bias towards threat. Among youth below the poverty line, this bias away from threat was associated with increased anxiety. The paper presents a specific model used to assess and select the method of heavy metal leaching from waste materials. A recommendation for the rational selection of the leaching method was made, taking into account the crucial parameters affecting the leaching process derived from the authors' research experience. The assessment models were supplemented with characteristics relating to the cost and time required to perform the tests. An approach was developed that links the weights of the assessment criteria with the degree of environmental risk from a particular heavy metal and waste type. Using multiple-criteria decision analysis, four models were developed for the assessment and selection of a test method for the leaching of heavy metals from waste. The difference is in the way the weights of the assessment criteria depend on the potential threat of the waste to the environment. A key element of the proposed approach is assigning the weights of the criterion to the toxicity of the heavy metal, the type of waste, and their management method. The results obtained prove that the current practice of only employing the batch leaching test is inappropriate. The choice of method should be justified in terms of environmental safety as well as time- and cost-effectiveness. The results of the paper show that the proposed model can be used in practice and be a recommendation for choosing the method of leaching heavy metals from waste and their further treatment, following the principles of sustainable waste management. Globally, war is the major cause of displacement from the usual place of the biological environment. The war of Tigray exposed thousands of people to internal displacement and migration. Evidence has shown that displaced people and migrants shoulder the health and economic burden to ensure survival. However, evidence of the impact of the war on health and the economy related to the displaced people and their hosting communities is not documented. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the health and economic impact of the war on displaced people and the hosting community. A community-based survey was conducted among randomly selected 3572 households of 48 woredas/districts from August 06 to 30/2021 in Tigray. Each district had 4 enumeration sites and there were 20 households (HHs) to be sampled per each enumeration site. Data were collected using a pretested structured questionnaire using face-to-face interviews of displaced and hosting household heads. The entered data is exported to SPSS version 26 statistical packages for data analysis. Summary statistics and geo-spatial analysis was computed. The war had a significant impact on the health and economy of the community of Internally Displaced People (cIDPs) and hosting households. There were 12,691 cIDPs and 3572 hosting HHs. About 12.3% had chronic illness12.3% of (cIDP) who had chronic diseases and follow-up medication was forced to stop their medication. 536 (15%) civilian family members of cIDPs were killed at their homes. During the war, 244 (6.83%) of civilian family members faced physical disability. Consequentially, 43.8% and 58.8% of respondents of cIDPs suffered from severe depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The war had a significant amount of personal resources such as domestic animals, cereals, cars, machinery, and HH furniture was looted and vandalized by the perpetrator forces from the cIDPs and hosting HHs. The range of family size in the hosting households was 3 to 22. The war had a significant health and economic impact on both cIDPs and hosting HHs. cIDPs suffered from various illnesses and disabilities related to the war with no medical access and follow-up care leading them to stressful situations such as depression and PTSD. This paper presents a conceptual model describing the medium and long term co-evolution of natural and socio-economic subsystems of Earth. An economy is viewed as an out-of-equilibrium dissipative structure that can only be maintained with a flow of energy and matter. The distinctive approach emphasized here consists in capturing the economic impact of natural ecosystems' depletion by human activities via a pinch of thermodynamic potentials. This viewpoint allows: (i) the full-blown integration of a limited quantity of primary resources into a non-linear macrodynamics that is stock-flow consistent both in terms of matter-energy and economic transactions; (ii) the inclusion of natural and forced recycling; (iii) the inclusion of a friction term which reflects the impossibility to produce (and recycle)goods and services without exuding energy and matter wastes, and (iv) the computation of the anthropically produced entropy as a function of metabolizing intensity and frictions. Analysis and numerical computations confirm the role played by intensity and frictions as key factors for sustainability by contrast with real gdp growth—as well as the interplay between resource scarcity, income inequality, and inflation. A more egalitarian society with moderate inflation turns out to be more sustainable than an unequal society with low inflation. Our approach is flexible enough to allow for various economic models to be embedded into our thermodynamic framework. In order to study the influence of excavation sequence of three-hole parallel shield tunnel on surface settlement and segment convergence, an improved "three-stage analysis method" was proposed to calculate the surface settlement of three-hole parallel shield tunnel. Based on Peck's existing theory, this method deduced the ground settlement formula under the three-hole parallel condition, and can calculate the ground settlement more accurately. Based on the engineering background of a shield tunnel section in Jiangsu Province, a three-dimensional model of a three-hole parallel shield tunnel was established by using Flac3d software, and the three-hole parallel shield tunnel was simulated under four working conditions: right–center–left, right–left–center, right–left–right and right–center (reverse)–left. This paper analyzed the influence of tunnel excavation sequence on surface settlement, soil displacement and deformation of tunnel segments. The construction sequence was optimized based on the above influencing factors. It was found that Case 4, S-type sequential excavation, produced the least ground settlement. The surface settlement value caused by S-type excavation sequence was only 11.41 mm, and the convergence value of the segments generated by S-type excavation sequence was relatively small. Considering the economic factors such as construction efficiency and benefit, the S-shaped excavation sequence was better. The new calculation method of tunnel surface settlement and the optimal sequence of tunnel construction proposed in this paper can provide reference for actual construction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stroke is a significant cause of mortality and disability in India, with its economic impact on the rise. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with stroke among the elderly population in seven north-eastern states of India and its economic consequences. Data from the initial phase of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (2017–2018) were utilized, and bivariate and multivariate analyses were done. Stroke prevalence (1.53%) was notable among both genders, with approximately 1% in females and 2.3% in males. Individuals with low physical activity, higher socio-economic status, and unemployment faced a higher risk of stroke. Females exhibited a 60% lower likelihood [AOR 0.40; (CI 0.250–0.627)] of stroke compared to males and hypertension was a significant risk factor. Stroke patients incur up to INR 50,000 of financial burden, with a considerable proportion facing disability in comprehension and speech. The economic burden of stroke-related hospitalization was significantly high, emphasizing the need for government-funded health insurance to cover stroke-related medications and reducing out-of-pocket expenses for patients seeking treatment in healthcare facilities. The study highlights the urgency for better schemes to address the growing threat of strokes in the north-eastern parts of India for comprehensively tackling this public health challenge. Purpose: Experiencing financial toxicity following a cancer diagnosis is a circular and complex process. We investigate the circular causal mechanisms that either reinforce or balance financial toxicity dynamics. Methods: We conducted a literature review, expert interviews, a participatory modeling process, and exploratory interviews with N = 11 adults with cancer living in Switzerland. We sampled participants purposively based on health-related and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: We describe a conceptual model based on the triangulation of cancer survivor narratives, expert perspectives, and a literature review. This model distinguishes between the reinforcing and balancing feedback loops that drive the dynamics of financial toxicity. It includes the topics “Coping with cancer and employment,” “Coping with limited economic resources,” and “Maintaining care resources while facing economic pressure.” For each topic, we identify a necessary condition for cancer survivors to avoid reinforcing financial toxicity. Conclusions: The results allow us to reconstruct participant narratives regarding cancer-related financial toxicity. Based on comparison with scientific literature from Western Europe and North America, we hypothesize the validity of the model beyond the population covered by the sample. The results highlight the importance of screening for the risk of financial toxicity in the clinical context and individual risk and resource assessment in social counseling. Implications for cancer survivors: These results can raise cancer survivors’ awareness of risks related to financial toxicity and strengthen their resources for coping with financial burden successfully. Under the background that electric vehicles cause enormous supply pressure on the grid, the application of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology can effectively alleviate supply pressure and also bring more economic benefits. Considering conditions for participating in V2G, pure electric logistics fleets have the advantages of stable work end time and large remaining power. In this paper, the economic benefits of the pure electric logistics fleet participating in V2G and the influence factors of the V2G profit are studied. Firstly, the travel data of a pure electric logistics fleet in Chengdu, China is collected. Secondly, the V2G profit model is established to quantify the economic benefits. Then, 4 V2G scenario modes are proposed based on window duration, window start time, SOC lower limit and discharge price. Finally, the change law and influence factors of the V2G profit in each V2G scenario mode are studied from the perspective of the discharge revenue, charge cost and battery loss cost. The results show that the V2G profit increases with the extension of window duration, the delay of window start time, the decrease of SOC lower limit and the increase of discharge price. The average profit of logistics fleets ranges from 3.94 RMB/(vehicle·day) to 65.54 RMB/(vehicle·day). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic policies for managing agricultural water use are often complicated by the challenge of using water prices as an efficient economic tool when other non-economic concerns are involved in the decision-making process. This study aims to analyse the impact of water pricing policies on preserving agricultural water resources in Iran. This study applies a system dynamics approach to simulate the system performance and behaviour of stakeholders and the economic implications. Our finding shows that water pricing policies will likely fail due to low water price elasticity and if there are lack of institutional and physical infrastructure, alternative professions, manufacturing technology, education, and training opportunities. The results also illustrate how agricultural water price increase (AWPI) fails to reduce water consumption in the absence of an adequate institutional arrangement. Also, it shows how the lack of advanced institutional infrastructure in the presence of physical infrastructure enhances pervasive overuse and destructive competition among stakeholders by increasing the area under cultivation. In the discussion, the paper portrays a way out of the decision-making body by following AWPI effects on water conservation in the agricultural sector as the most significant water consumer. It investigates the absence and subsequent presence of specific institutional conditions and evaluates training and enhancing farmers' skills and alternative career source with higher income and technology as the architecture of good environmental governance. Finally, it concludes that a series of inclusive measures must be considered to increase the elasticity of the water price. This paper seeks to characterise the relationship between civil society and mining in Minas Gerais, Brazil, between 2000 and 2020 by observing the actions of three different groups in resisting the expansion of mining. The analysis points to the existence of a plurality of forms of engagement, organisation and ways of establishing relations between civil society and the state and the market. It also reveals tension between different ways of framing the mining problem by civil society, of posing this problem publicly and establishing ways to confront it. Three sets of actors are identified: (i) environmental NGOs, who are market-oriented; (ii) groups with looser ties who are more radical; and (iii) social movements aligned with the identities of a state-orientated traditional left. My analysis suggests that the divergence in framing the context by these three different groups hinders the construction of a substantive public debate on the mining issue in Brazil. The article is divided into three parts. First, it briefly outlines the process of mining expansion in Brazil, starting in the mid-2000s, highlighting its economic impact. Second, it considers the relationship between civil society articulation and deliberation. Purpose: The incidence of thyroid cancer has increased substantially over the past few decades and is partially explained by overdiagnosis. Geographical variations in incidence rates were reported to be related to national development status. This study aimed to gain deeper insights into global thyroid cancer burden by incorporating additional social and economic factors to account for cross-national disparities. Methods: We performed a multivariate analysis of age-standardized incidence and mortality data from the GLOBOCAN 2020 database for 126 countries that had more than 100 incident cases of thyroid cancer. The human development index (HDI), current health expenditure, and additional Global Health Observatory indicators were extracted from multiple sources. Results: Age-standardized incidence was highly correlated with HDI (standardized coefficient beta = 0.523, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.275–0.771) among the countries studied. The prevalence of raised fasting blood glucose was associated with age-standardized mortality (beta = 0.277, 95% CI = 0.038–0.517). Generally, the mortality-to-incidence ratio was higher in males than in females. In multivariate analysis, HDI (beta = − 0.767, 95% CI = − 0.902 to − 0.633), current health expenditure (beta = 0.265, 95% CI = 0.137–0.394), and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations (beta = 0.192, 95% CI = 0.086–0.298) were associated with mortality-to-incidence ratios. Conclusions: National developments gauged by HDI explain the majority of the variation in incidence rates of thyroid cancer but play a smaller role in disparities in mortality rates.
