The study aimed to review the role of basal, trigger, and aspiration day progesterone levels (PLs) as predictors of in vitro fertilization (IVF) success for patients with and without endometriosis. A non-systematic review was conducted by searching papers published in English during the period of 1990–2023 in MEDLINE and PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library (Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Methodology Register), and Web of Science. The most widely used IVF predictor success was the trigger day progesterone serum level. Many studies utilize the threshold level of 1.5–2.0 ng/ml. However, the predictive power of only progesterone level failed to show high sensitivity and specificity. Contrary, progesterone level on the trigger day combined with the number of mature retrieved oocytes had the highest predictive power. High baseline progesterone level was associated with poor IVF outcomes. Research on progesterone and IVF success in patients with endometriosis is limited but indicates that endometriosis patients seem to benefit from higher progesterone concentrations (≥ 37.1 ng/ml) in IVF cycles. Currently, there is limited data for a definitive insight into the mportance of progesterone in the estimation of IVF success. Nonetheless, this summarized evidence could serve as up-to-date guidance for the role of progesterone in the prediction of IVF outcomes, both in patients with and without endometriosis. To evaluate health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with a high-risk skin melanoma after completion of the primary surgical treatment over time, as well as, to identify factors associated with better HRQoL at the beginning and at the end of follow-up. The study included subjects with histopathologically confirmed high-risk skin melanoma in clinical stages IIC, IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC, in whom clinical and radiographic signs of the disease were not confirmed after primary surgical treatment. The HRQoL was evaluated using Short Form—36 (SF-36) after completion of primary surgical treatment (start of follow-up) and after 6 to 12 months (end of follow-up). A total of 71 people completed SF-36 at both points in time. There were no significant differences between the initial and the follow-up total HRQoL score (t = 1.118; p = 0.267). At the start of follow-up, having fewer depressive symptoms, better functional status and lower vitamin D serum levels were associated with a better total HRQoL score. At the end of follow-up, having lower Breslow depth and being employed at the start of follow-up, having fewer depressive symptoms and lower C-reactive protein (CRP) serum levels at follow-up, and not developing metastases over follow-up were associated with a higher total HRQoL scores. The HRQoL of people with high-risk melanoma did not change in the year following the complete removal of the tumor. With growing opportunities for medical doctors to work either in academia and industry, research ethics education for health sciences research, meaning research which includes humans and animals and/or their tissues and cells with the goal to understand underlying mechanisms of disease occurrence and disease treatment, is of paramount importance, especially in regions, such as Serbia, where comprehensive research ethics curricula for physician researchers are lacking. This article addresses the spectrum of research ethics topics that were identified through analysis of the existing research ethics curricula in medical schools, international organizations, Serbian legislative codes and the PubMed database applying the key search terms: ethics, research, biomedical, education, curriculum, program, course and their combinations. Selected topics were classified in eight syllabi based on their similarity: #1 Responsible conduct of research, #2 Justice in human subjects research, #3 Research on human subjects, #4 Vulnerable population groups, #5 Conflict of interest, #6 Research on animals, #7 Research on genes, cells and embryos, and #8 Organization of research ethics. Justifications for each syllabus are discussed based on empirical evidence and local context. Higher education authorities could use this framework to strengthen, adjust or refine research ethics education for physician researchers in Serbia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to evaluate recognition of pathologists and radiologists as coauthors in case reports in the field of surgical oncology. The MEDLINE database was searched for all full free text case reports involving human material published from April 1, 2011 until March 31, 2016, using search terms: "case report" + "tumors" + "surgery" + "malignant". The search strategy identified a total of 1427 case reports of which 907 were included in this analysis. Of 807 articles with histopathological images and/or descriptions, 352 (43.6%) did not acknowledge or include the pathologist as a coauthor. Of 662 case reports with radiographic images and/or their description, 537 (81.1%) did not list the radiologist as coauthor nor acknowledge them. In case reports containing histopathological images, significantly more pathologists were either listed as coauthors or acknowledged compared to those who were not (Z = 5.128; p = 0.001). However, among case reports containing radiographic images, there were significantly less articles either listing radiologists as coauthors or acknowledging them compared to a larger proportion of articles in which radiologists were omitted (Z = − 22.646; p = 0.001). In conclusion, pathologists and radiologists are underrecognized as coauthors in surgical oncology case reports in spite of obvious proof of their contribution to manuscript preparation. When involved in research and publishing, all physicians should be aware of fair and honest collaboration with specialists in other clinical and non-clinical disciplines to better serve the scientific community. Purpose: To assess factors associated with better sexual quality of life (QOL) in midlife period among women who are and are not sexually active.Methods: Participants were 500 women aged 40-65 years from Belgrade, Serbia. Data were collected through general questionnaire (regarding socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyle habits, general medical, and gynecological history) in which one item investigated having partnered sexual activity (heterosexual intercourses). The sexual domain of the Utian Quality of Life Scale was used to assess the sexual QOL. The sexual QOL consisted of reflections on the satisfaction with frequency of sexual interactions, as well as sexual and romantic life in general. Higher scores indicated better sexual QOL.Results: Most women were sexually active in midlife (81.6%). The mean sexual QOL score for the overall sample was 9.99 (range 3-15). The level of sexual QOL did not differ between sexually active and non-active women. Factors associated with better sexual QOL in sexually active menopausal women were being married or coupled, being physically active, having more children, having hot flushes, and not having tachycardia. Factors associated with better sexual QOL in sexually inactive menopausal women were drinking alcohol, being physically active, not having insomnia or skin rash.Conclusions: Sexual QOL among Serbian urban midlife women was good and did not differ between women who were sexually active and those who were not. Further studies are needed to determine in what manner women who are not sexually active in midlife achieve high level of satisfaction with their sexual QOL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The study aim was to translate the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) to Serbian language and assess its validity and reliability in the population of Serbian menopausal women.Methods: The study included 200 peri- and postmenopausal women from two Community Health Centers (city center and outskirts) in the Serbian capital-Belgrade. Women filled out general questionnaire (socio-demographics, habits, medical history), the MRS, Short Form-36 questionnaire (SF-36) and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI). The MRS was translated according to recommended methodology and its psychometric properties (internal consistency, factor analysis, discriminant, construct and criterion validity) were assessed.Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole scale was 0.884 (psychological α = 0.902, somato-vegetative α = 0.761, urogenital α = 0.734). Values of the CI-TC coefficient for Serbian MRS were adequate for 10 items, proving their suitability in the scale. On factor analysis, we obtained the same 3 factors as in the original scale (73.1 % of variance). Communalities of all items were appropriate (>0.4). There was no common method bias. The MRS total score was correlated positively with BDI score (p = 0.001) and negatively with all SF-36 domains (p = 0.001) except General Health. Based on ROC analysis, MRS scores were more consistent for post- than perimenopausal Serbian women. Similar results of two raters (p > 0.05) implied on adequate translation and reliability of MRS.Conclusion: Serbian version of MRS demonstrated excellent reliability and validity. Obesity contributes to various pregnancy complications and therefore, may compromise maternal quality of life. The study aim was to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) during pregnancy. Study involved every 6th woman who gave birth in the Clinic for Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Center of Serbia during the year 2010. Initial and end pregnancy BMIs were calculated for every woman. The parturients (604) completed the SF36 questionnaire (physical-PHC; mental-MHC; total quality of life-TQL), Beck's Depression Inventory, Fatigue Severity Scale, Pregnancy Symptom Scale, Multidimensional Personal Support Scale, and Acceptance of Illness Scale. Before pregnancy most women had normal or decreased weight, while at the end of pregnancy the majority were overweight or obese ( p = 0.000). Initial and end pregnancy weights ( p < 0.05) and BMIs ( p < 0.05) were positively correlated with depression. Depression was significantly lower in overweight compared to mildly or morbidly obese women during pregnancy ( p < 0.05). Pregnancy weight change correlated negatively with PHC ( p = 0.029), and positively with fatigue ( p = 0.030), and symptoms ( p = 0.011). Of all BMI categories, morbidly obese women had the worst feeling of social support ( p < 0.05). Pregnancy symptoms were significantly less problematic in women with normal weight compared to overweight and obese women during pregnancy ( p < 0.05). Assessing the impact of all investigated parameters together, we established significant models for PHC ( p = 0.036), depression ( p = 0.030), and fatigue ( p = 0.038). Pregnant women should be advised to keep their gestational weight gain within the normal recommended range to have a good pregnancy outcome and HRQoL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The population of the Republic of Serbia has been exposed to radical changes in living standards and employment status and inequalities in utilization of health-care services. Given that infant mortality rates (IMR) reflect general community health, we evaluated the trends and mortality structure of Belgrade's infant population for a 15-year period (1993-2007). Data were collected from published and unpublished materials of the Municipal Institute of Statistics in Belgrade. Records were based on official notifications of live-born infants and death certificates. A linear regression equation was used to estimate mortality trends over time, while an F test was performed to assess the significance of the linear regression coefficient. The average IMR was 11.3 [95 % confidence interval (CI) 9.4, 13.2] per 1,000 live births for both sexes with a higher average rate observed for male infants. Throughout the whole period, a statistically significant declining trend ( y = 17.072 − 0.721 x, p = 0.001) was noted. The most common causes of death were conditions occurring during the perinatal period, with an average annual mortality rate of 7.7 [95 % CI 6.4, 8.9] per 1,000, arising mainly from respiratory distress of the newborns. Regarding congenital anomalies, deformations of the heart and aortic and mitral valves were most frequently found. A statistically significant inverse correlation was observed between average net salary and IMR for each sex separately (for males r = −0.727, p = 0.002, for females r = −0.721, p = 0.002) and for both sexes jointly ( r = −0.759, p = 0.001).
