Summary: Realising the benefits of systematic secondary fracture prevention requires supporting local sites to get started and becoming effective. We here describe the development, implementation and impact of a regional fracture liaison service (FLS) mentorship programme in Latin America that led to 64 FLS getting started and coverage of 17,205 patients. Introduction: Despite treatments and service models to deliver effective secondary fracture prevention, most patients are left untreated after a fragility fracture. To improve the capability to get FLS started and more effective, we describe the development, implementation and evaluation of an international programme to develop national communities of FLS mentors as part of the Capture the Fracture Partnership in Latin America. Methods: The IOF regional team and the University of Oxford developed the curriculum and associated resources for training mentors in setting up FLS, service improvement and mentorship. Mentors were selected during a preparatory meeting, trained using live online sessions followed by regular mentor-led post-training meetings. The programme was evaluated using a pre-training needs assessment and post-training evaluation based on Moore's outcomes. Results: The mentorship programme was initiated in Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina. The mentors were multidisciplinary, including orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation, rheumatology, endocrinology, geriatrics, gynaecology and internal medicine. There was 100% participation in training sessions and reported satisfaction with the training. Since the initiation of the training programme, 22 FLS have been set up in Mexico, 30 in Brazil, 3 in Colombia and 9 in Argentina, in comparison with two in Chile and none in any other LATAM countries that were not involved in the mentorship programme. This equates to approximately 17,025 additional patients identified from 2019 to 2021 after initiation of mentorship. The mentors have engaged with 58 FLS for service development. Post-training activities include two published national best practice guidelines and other country-specific resources for FLS in the local language. Conclusion: Despite the COVID pandemic, the mentorship pillar of the Capture the Fracture Partnership has developed a community of FLS mentors with measurable improvement in national FLS provision. At small inter-parton distances, double parton distributions receive their dominant contribution from the splitting of a single parton. We compute this mechanism at next-to-leading order in perturbation theory for all colour configurations of the observed parton pair. Rapidity divergences are handled either by using spacelike Wilson lines or by applying the δ regulator. We investigate the behaviour of the two-loop contributions in different kinematic limits, and we illustrate their impact in different channels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solving the nonlinear optimal control problem (OCP) arising from Economic Nonlinear model predictive control (ENMPC) reliably in real time is still a challenge. In this chapter, we present an extended multi-level iteration scheme (MLI) and discuss the interplay of exact Hessian and Hessian approximations. We show the importance of proper use of regularization strategies for indefinite Hessian matrices and compare it to quasi-Newton methods. Models for double parton distributions that are realistic and consistent with theoretical constraints are crucial for a reliable description of double parton scattering. We show how an ansatz that has the correct behaviour in the limit of small transverse distance between the partons can be improved step by step, such as to fulfil the sum rules for double parton distributions with an accuracy around 10%. We study the evolution of parton distributions down to low scales by considering several of their Mellin moments. For the initial conditions, we use a broad array of current parton density fits. Confirming earlier findings in the literature, we conclude that current determinations of parton distributions are incompatible with the idea that gluon or antiquark densities are generated by purely perturbative radiation as it is encoded in the DGLAP evolution equations. Dual phase steels are advanced high strength alloys typically used for structural parts and reinforcements in car bodies. Their good combination of strength and ductility and their lean composition render them an economically competitive option for realizing multiple lightweight design options in automotive engineering. The mechanical response of dual phase steels is the result of the strain and stress partitioning among the ferritic and martensitic phases and the individual crystallographic grains and subgrains of these phases. Therefore, understanding how these microstructural features influence the global and local mechanical properties is of utmost importance for the design of improved dual phase steel grades. While multiple corresponding simulation studies have been dedicated to the investigation of dual phase steel micromechanics, numerical tools and experiment techniques for characterizing and simulating real 3D microstructures of such complex materials have been emerged only recently. Here we present a crystal plasticity simulation study based on a 3D dual phase microstructure which is obtained by EBdD tomography, also referred to as 3D EBdD (EBdD-electron backscatter diffraction). In the present case we utilized a 3D EBdD serial sectioning approach based on mechanical polishing. Moreover, sections of the 3D microstructure are used as 2D models to study the effect of this simplification on the stress and strain distribution. The simulations are conducted using a phenomenological crystal plasticity model and a spectral method approach implemented in the Düsseldorf Advanced Material Simulation Kit (DAMAdK). Quasi-Newton and truncated-Newton methods are popular methods in optimization and are traditionally seen as useful alternatives to the gradient and Newton methods. Throughout the literature, results are found that link quasi-Newton methods to certain first-order methods under various assumptions. We offer a simple proof to show that a range of quasi-Newton methods are first-order methods in the definition of Nesterov. Further, we define a class of generalized first-order methods and show that the truncated-Newton method is a generalized first-order method and that first-order methods and generalized first-order methods share the same worst-case convergence rates. Further, we extend the complexity analysis for smooth strongly convex problems to finite dimensions. An implication of these results is that in a worst-case scenario, the local superlinear or faster convergence rates of quasi-Newton and truncated-Newton methods cannot be effective unless the number of iterations exceeds half the size of the problem dimension. This White Paper presents the science case of an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), focused on the structure and interactions of gluon-dominated matter, with the intent to articulate it to the broader nuclear science community. It was commissioned by the managements of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with the objective of presenting a summary of scientific opportunities and goals of the EIC as a follow-up to the 2007 NSAC Long Range plan. This document is a culmination of a community-wide effort in nuclear science following a series of workshops on EIC physics over the past decades and, in particular, the focused ten-week program on 'Gluons and quark sea at high energies' at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Fall 2010. It contains a brief description of a few golden physics measurements along with accelerator and detector concepts required to achieve them. It has been benefited profoundly from inputs by the users' communities of BNL and JLab. This White Paper offers the promise to propel the QCD science program in the US, established with the CEBAF accelerator at JLab and the RHIC collider at BNL, to the next QCD frontier. This paper introduces novel numerical solution strategies for generalized semi-infinite optimization problems (GSIP), a class of mathematical optimization problems which occur naturally in the context of design centering problems, robust optimization problems, and many fields of engineering science. GSIPs can be regarded as bilevel optimization problems, where a parametric lower-level maximization problem has to be solved in order to check feasibility of the upper level minimization problem. The current paper discusses several strategies to reformulate this class of problems into equivalent finite minimization problems by exploiting the concept of Wolfe duality for convex lower level problems. Here, the main contribution is the discussion of the non-degeneracy of the corresponding formulations under various assumptions. We study deeply virtual Compton scattering on a virtual pion that is emitted by a proton. Using a range of models for the generalized parton distributions of the pion, we evaluate the cross section, as well as the beam spin and beam charge asymmetries in the leading-twist approximation. Studying Compton scattering on the pion in suitable kinematics puts high demands on both beam energy and luminosity, and we find that the corresponding requirements will first be met after the energy upgrade at Jefferson Laboratory. As a by-product of our study, we construct a parameterization of pion generalized parton distributions that has a non-trivial interplay between the x and t dependence and is in good agreement with form factor data and lattice calculations. Several hard exclusive scattering processes admit a description in terms of generalized parton distributions and perturbative hard-scattering kernels. Both the physical amplitude and the hard-scattering kernels fulfill dispersion relations. We give a detailed investigation of their consistency at all orders in perturbation theory. The results shed light on the information about generalized parton distributions that can be extracted from the real and imaginary parts of exclusive amplitudes. We analyze in detail the size of next-to-leading order corrections to hard exclusive meson production within the collinear factorization approach. Corrections to the cross section are found to be huge at small xB and substantial in typical fixed-target kinematics. With the models we take for nucleon helicity-flip distributions, the transverse target polarization asymmetry in vector meson production is strongly affected by radiative corrections, except at large xB. We compute the electromagnetic form factor of the pion, using non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson fermions. The calculations are done for a wide range of pion masses and lattice spacings. We check for finite size effects by repeating some of the measurements on smaller lattices. The large number of lattice parameters we use allows us to extrapolate to the physical point. For the square of the charge radius we find $\langle{r^2}\rangle= 0.444(20)$ fm2, in good agreement with experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate electroproduction of pion pairs on the nucleon in the framework of QCD factorization for hard exclusive processes. We extend previous analyses by taking the hard-scattering coefficients at next-to-leading order in αs . The dynamics of the produced pion pair is described by two-pion distribution amplitudes, for which we perform a detailed theoretical and phenomenological analysis. In particular, we obtain constraints on these quantities by comparing our results with measurements of angular observables that are sensitive to the interference between two-pion production in the isoscalar and isovector channels. We complete the analysis of twist-two generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in one-loop order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Extending our previous study of the chiral-even isosinglet sector, we give results for chiral-even isotriplet distributions and for the chiral-odd sector. We analyze the moments of the isosinglet generalized parton distributions H, E, $ \tilde{{H}}$ , $ \tilde{{E}}$ of the nucleon in one-loop order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. We discuss in detail the construction of the operators in the effective theory that are required to obtain all corrections to a given order in the chiral power counting. We show how generalized quark distributions in the nucleon describe the density of polarized quarks in the impact parameter plane, both for longitudinal and transverse polarization of the quark and the nucleon. This density representation entails positivity bounds including chiral-odd distributions, which tighten the known bounds in the chiral-even sector. Using the quark equations of motion, we derive relations between the moments of chiral-odd generalized parton distributions of twist two and twist three. We exhibit the analogy between polarized quark distributions in impact parameter space and transverse momentum dependent distribution functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigating the processes that led to the end of the last interglacial period is relevant for understanding how our ongoing interglacial will end, which has been a matter of much debate (see, for example, refs 1, 2). A recent ice core from Greenland demonstrates climate cooling from 122,000 years ago driven by orbitally controlled insolation, with glacial inception at 118,000 years ago. Here we present an annually resolved, layer-counted record of varve thickness, quartz grain size and pollen assemblages from a maar lake in the Eifel (Germany), which documents a late Eemian aridity pulse lasting 468 years with dust storms, aridity, bushfire and a decline of thermophilous trees at the time of glacial inception. We interpret the decrease in both precipitation and temperature as an indication of a close link of this extreme climate event to a sudden southward shift of the position of the North Atlantic drift, the ocean current that brings warm surface waters to the northern European region. The late Eemian aridity pulse occurred at a 65° N July insolation of 416 W m-2, close to today's value of 428 W m-2 (ref. 9), and may therefore be relevant for the interpretation of present-day climate variability. We discuss polarized lepton-proton scattering with special emphasis on the difference between target polarization defined relative to the lepton beam or to the virtual photon direction. In particular, this difference influences azimuthal distributions in the final state. We provide a general framework of analysis and apply it to the specific cases of semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, of exclusive meson production, and of deeply virtual Compton scattering. We present a simple empirical parameterization of thex- andt-dependence of generalized parton distributions at zero skewness, using forward parton distributions as input. A fit to experimental data for the Dirac, Pauli and axial form factors of the nucleon allows us to discuss quantitatively the interplay between longitudinal and transverse partonic degrees of freedom in the nucleon (“nucleon tomography”). In particular we obtain the transverse distribution of valence quarks at given momentum fractionx. We calculate various moments of the distributions, including the form factors that appear in the handbag approximation to wide-angle Compton scattering. This allows us to estimate the minimal momentum transfer required for reliable predictions in that approach to be around. We find good sensitivity to the coupling Im(R1 +?R), which is not measurable with longitudinal polarisation. In contrast, for the real parts (including the CP violating couplings) the sensitivity is better if both beams are longitudinally polarised. The sensitivity of optimal integrated observables to electroweak triple gauge couplings is investigated for the process e-e+ → W-W+ → 4 fermions at future linear colliders. By a suitable reparameterisation of the couplings we achieve that all 28 coupling parameters have uncorrelated statistical errors and are naturally normalised for this process. Discrete symmetry properties simplify the analysis and allow checks on the stability of numerical results. We investigate the sensitivity to the couplings of the normalised event distribution and the additional constraints that can be obtained from the total rate. Particular emphasis is put on the gain in sensitivity one can achieve with longitudinal beam polarisation. We also point out questions that may best be settled with transversely polarised beams. In particular we find that with purely longitudinal polarisation one linear combination of coupling parameters is hardly measurable by means of the normalised event distribution. We study the handbag contribution to two-photon annihilation into baryon-antibaryon pairs at large energy and momentum transfer. We derive factorization of the process amplitude into a hard γγ → qq subprocess and form factors describing the soft qq → BB transition, assuming that the process is dominated by configurations where the (anti)quark approximately carries the full momentum of the (anti) baryon. The form factors represent moments of time-like generalized parton distributions, so-called BB distribution amplitudes. A characteristic feature of the handbag mechanism is the absence of isospin- two components in the final state, which in combination with flavor symmetry provides relations among the form factors for the members of the lowest-lying baryon octet. Assuming dominance of the handbag contribution, we can describe current experimental data with form factors of plausible size, and predict the cross sections of presently unmeasured BB channels. We study generalized parton distributions in the impact parameter representation, including the case of nonzero skewness $\xi$. Using Lorentz invariance, and expressing parton distributions in terms of impact parameter dependent wave functions, we investigate in which way they simultaneously describe longitudinal and transverse structure of a fast moving hadron. We investigate the exclusive photoproduction of a heavy timelike photon which decays into a lepton pair, $\gamma p\to \ell^+\!\ell^- p$. This can be seen as the analog of deeply virtual Compton scattering, and we argue that the two processes are complementary for studying generalized parton distributions in the nucleon. In an unpolarized experiment the angular distribution of the leptons readily provides access to the real part of the Compton amplitude. We estimate the possible size of this effect in kinematics where the Compton process should be dominated by quark exchange. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the possibility to constrain the pion distribution amplitude from the $\gamma^* \gamma^* \to\pi$ transition. For a surprisingly large range in the two photon virtualities we find that the transition form factor is essentially independent of the distribution amplitude. This in turn entails a parameter-free prediction of QCD. The $\gamma^* \gamma^* \to\eta, \eta'$ form factors are also briefly discussed. We show that for both quarks and gluons there are eight generalized parton distributions in the proton: four which conserve parton helicity and four which do not. We relate ordinary and skewed parton distributions to soft overlap contributions to elastic form factors and large angle Compton scattering, using light-cone wave functions in a Fock state expansion of the nucleon. With a simple ansatz for the wave functions of the three lowest Fock states we achieve a good description of unpolarised and polarised parton distributions at large x, and of the data for the Dirac form factor and for Compton scattering, both of which can be saturated with soft contributions only. Large angle Compton scattering appears as a good case to investigate the relative importance of soft and hard contributions in exclusive processes which are sensitive to the end point regions of the nucleon wave function. The pomeron model of Donnachie and Landshoff does not conserve the electromagnetic current when applied to diffractive reactions such as electroproduction of a quark-antiquark pair or of a vector meson. We propose a treatment of this problem which ensures a physical behaviour of cross sections in the photoproduction limit and show that it leads to results rather similar to those obtained from two-gluon exchange. Temperature-dependent rise time and lifetime results, by measuring the photon emission in the temperature range 10-200 K, were obtained on cis-(NEt)[TeClBr](C) and [SeCl](O). The kinetics of excitation and relaxation are described by a three-level model containing transition rate constants which are related to different symmetry selection rules between corresponding electronic levels. The transient emission can be modified by varying the excitation pulse length. Besides a slow component in the luminescence decay-curve (0.5 ms at T = 12 K) a second, faster component can be detected. The amplitude ratio of these components can be increased by decreasing the excitation pulse length, which can be explained by assuming non-thermally equilibrated excited states. The results allow the assignment of the lowest levels which arise from the excited sp electron configuration of the central ion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the production of a quark-antiquark pair in diffractive photon-proton scattering, approximating soft pomeron exchange by the exchange of two nonperturbative gluons. In deep inelastic scattering at HERA, events with two jets and the scattered proton in the final state are predicted to be observable, with an important contribution from charm production. For photoproduction of light quark jets with high transverse momentum we find that both exchanged gluons must have a large invariant mass, so that the cross section is very small, whereas for charm quarks it is quite appreciable. From our calculation we also extract the quark structure function of the pomeron for the scaling variable z no too close to 0 or 1, finding a strong flavour dependence and a behaviour somewhat harder than z(1− z) for light quarks. We investigate the prospects of measuring anomalous couplings between gauge bosons at electron-positron-colliders with optimal observables. Such observables are shown to contain all information on the coupling parameters that can be extracted in a given reaction. Their sensitivity to the form factors in the general expressions of the triple gauge vertices WWZ and WW, including CP violating terms and absorptive parts, is calculated in view of LEP2 and the NLC. We discuss the reaction ep→ epp˜ X in the onephoton exchange approximation, where it is in essence the reaction γ* p→p˜ X. A large rapidity gap is required between the particle or particles of the proton remnant pJ and those of X. We define a suitable azimuthal angle between a leptonic and a hadronic plane. The dependence of the cross section on is given explicitly and can be used to extract cross sections and interference terms for the reactionγ* p→p˜ X corresponding to the various helicities of the virtual photon γ*. The interference terms can be used to test models for the large rapidity gap events in a sensitive way. We discuss in detail models with factorizing Pomeron exchange and in particular the Donnachie- Landshoff Pomeron model. We make some remarks on soft colour exchange models and on possible effects of QCD background vacuum fields. We conclude with a suggestion to look for Odderon exchange in exclusive deep inelastic high energy reactions like γ* p→,p˜πand ğ p→p˜η. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Results are presented on p + ω,ø and J/ψ production in p-W and 32S-W interactions at 200GeV/c/nucleon measured via the dimuon decay in a large kinematic region. The data are normalized to the charged particle multiplicity in the same rapidity interval. They have been collected using the HELIOS/3 muon spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The ratio Bσø/ (Bσρ + Bσω), where B is the relevant resonance µµ branching fraction, increases between proton and sulphur projectiles, and is somewhat enhanced going from peripheral to central S-W interactions. This results from an increase in the number of produced ø’s per charged particle. The ratio is measured in different intervals of pt and rapidity. It is not clearly dependent on pt, but is larger at higher rapidities. J/Ψ production, likewise normalized to charged multiplicity, is significantly lower in S-W compared to p-W interactions. The distribution of a suitably defined azimuthal angle in diffractive deep inelastic scattering contains information on the polarisation of the exchanged photon. In particular it allows one to constrain the longitudinal diffractive structure function. We investigate the potential of such bounds in general and for particular diffractive final states. The cross section for the diffractive reaction γ + p → cc + p with a real or virtual photon is calculated in the nonperturbative two-gluon exchange model of Landshoff and Nachtmann. Numerical predictions are given for cross sections and spectra at typical HERA values of c.m. energy and photon virtuality. The contribution of charm to the diffractive structure function is evaluated and found to be rather small in the model, and the ratio between the production rates for bb and cc is tiny. We discuss how to measure anomalous WWZ- and WWγ-couplings with minimal statistical error using integrated observables, without having to assume that the anomalous couplings are small. We propose a parametrisation of these couplings which is well suited for the extraction of both single and many parameters, and which leads to a very simple form of the integrated cross section, from which additional information on the couplings can be obtained. Double hard scattering can play an important role for producing multiparticle final states in hadron-hadron collisions. The associated cross sections depend on double parton distributions, which at present are only weakly constrained by theory or measurements. A set of sum rules for these distributions has been proposed by Gaunt and Stirling some time ago. We give a proof for these sum rules at all orders in perturbation theory, including a detailed analysis of the renormalisation of ultraviolet divergences.
