Background: Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) predicts mortality and other negative health outcomes. However, little evidence exists on how PEFR changes with ageing and how trajectories of change differ among older people. Aims: To identify trajectories of PEFR in older men and women, and to study characteristics associated with these trajectories. Methods: Data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam were used, an ongoing cohort study in a representative sample of Dutch older men and women. PEFR was assessed using the Mini-Wright peak flow meter across a 13-year follow-up in 991 men and 1107 women. Trajectories were analyzed using Latent Class Growth Analysis. Results: Mean age was 72.5 (SD 8.4) in men and 72.4 (SD 8.4) in women. In men, three declining trajectories were identified, i.e. high, intermediate and low, with prevalences of 30%, 46% and 24%, respectively. In women, two declining trajectories were identified, i.e. high and low, with prevalences of 62 and 38%. All trajectories showed linear decline and differed mostly with regard to their intercept. Significant differences between trajectories with regard to baseline demographic, health and lifestyle characteristics were observed, e.g., men and women in the low PEFR trajectory were older, had more chronic diseases, and were more often smoker. Discussion and conclusions: Trajectories in both men and women differ mainly in baseline level of PEFR and not in rate of decline over time. This study set out to evaluate the association between job demands at baseline and physical performance over a six-year period across three cohorts of older Dutch workers examined 10 years apart. Data were drawn from three cohorts (1992–1999, 2002–2009 and 2012–2019) of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. Individuals aged 55–65 years from each cohort who worked for pay were included (n = 274, n = 416, n = 618, respectively). Physical performance was measured using gait speed and chair stand performance. A population-based job exposure matrix was used to indicate levels of exposure probability of physical (use of force and repetitive movements) and psychosocial (cognitive demands and time pressure) job demands. We found that psychosocial job demands increased and physical demands decreased across the three cohorts. No between cohort differences were found for how job demands affected changes in physical performance over follow-up. For men, faster decline in gait speed was observed when comparing higher and lower use of force at baseline (β −0.012, 95% CI −0.021, −0.004). Greater use of force and repetitive movements were associated with faster decline in chair stand performance (β −0.012, 95% CI −0.020, −0.004 and β −0.009, 95% CI −0.017, −0.001, respectively). In women, no association of job demands on change in physical performance was observed. The study concluded that higher physical job demands were associated with stronger decline in physical performance across six years for men in all cohorts, while no associations were found among women. Observed increases in retirement age are generally attributed to policies to extend working lives (PEW). In a quasi-experimental design, we examine to what extent increases in employment of older workers can be attributed to secular changes in individual characteristics as opposed to PEW. We compare two countries: one with clear PEW (the Netherlands) and one without PEW (Norway). Data come from the Dutch Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam and the NORwegian Longitudinal study on Aging and Generations. From each study, two same-age (55–64 years) samples are selected, one recruited in 2002–03, and one recruited after five (Norway) and ten years (Netherlands). In pooled regression analysis, paid work is the outcome variable, and time of measurement, the main independent variable. Individual characteristics include age, sex, educational level, self-perceived health, functional limitations, sense of mastery, and work status of partner. Employment rose in both countries, faster in the Netherlands than in Norway. Of the rise in employment, individual characteristics explained less in the Netherlands than in Norway. Accounting for these, the interaction country*time was significant, indicating an extra rise in employment of 5.2 and 7.5% points for Dutch men and women, net of individual characteristics and unobserved factors that are assumed to be similar in both countries. The extra rise in the Netherlands represents 57% of the total rise for both sexes. Thus, secular change in individual characteristics explains part of the rise in employment in both countries. There is an increasing awareness that replication should become common practice in empirical studies. However, study results might fail to replicate for various reasons. The robustness of published study results can be assessed using the relatively new multiverse-analysis methodology, in which the robustness of the effect estimates against data analytical decisions is assessed. However, the uptake of multiverse analysis in empirical studies remains low, which might be due to the scarcity of guidance available on performing multiverse analysis. Researchers might experience difficulties in identifying data analytical decisions and in summarizing the large number of effect estimates yielded by a multiverse analysis. These difficulties are amplified when applying multiverse analysis to assess the robustness of the effect estimates from a mediation analysis, as a mediation analysis involves more data analytical decisions than a bivariate analysis. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview and worked example of the use of multiverse analysis to assess the robustness of the effect estimates from a mediation analysis. We showed that the number of data analytical decisions in a mediation analysis is larger than in a bivariate analysis. By using a real-life data example from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, we demonstrated the application of multiverse analysis to a mediation analysis. This included the use of specification curves to determine the impact of data analytical decisions on the magnitude and statistical significance of the direct, indirect, and total effect estimates. Although the multiverse analysis methodology is still relatively new and future research is needed to further advance this methodology, this paper shows that multiverse analysis is a useful method for the assessment of the robustness of the direct, indirect, and total effect estimates in a mediation analysis and thereby to inform replication studies. Older Turkish and Moroccan immigrants are often ascribed a low social position based on their relatively unfavourable educational level, occupational status and income. Yet immigrants emigrated to improve their social position and came from contexts where determinants of social position might be based on different socio-cultural circumstances than those used in the country of settlement. In order to understand immigrants' own perception of their social position, we interviewed 23 60–68 year old immigrants from Turkish and Moroccan origin in the Netherlands. Using a ten rung ladder, participants were asked to position themselves in the societal hierarchy before migration, after settlement and currently. Most participants positioned themselves at a middle or high position on the societal ladder. Circumstances used for positioning were related to socioeconomic indicators, but also to social affirmation, family, social integration, physical, mental health, happiness and complying to religious prescriptions. When these circumstances were deemed favourable, participants tended to position themselves higher. Our findings also show that the circumstances that participants used for positioning themselves varied across the life course. These findings complement the picture of the often low objective low socioeconomic position of older immigrants and show that immigrants' perception of their subjective social position reflects a broader set of circumstances than just socioeconomic ones. Introduction: Age-related declines in multiple facets of sexuality in later life are well documented. However, most studies have been cross-sectional with data collected at one point in time, leaving questions about cohort differences and interrelated historical changes in physical health and psychosocial functioning unanswered. Methods: We examined cohort differences in perceived importance and enjoyment of sexuality in late midlife using data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) obtained 20 years apart, 1992–1993 (N = 718) and 2012–2013 (N = 860), from two independent samples aged 55 to 65 years (both samples: Mage ≈ 60, 52–53% women). Results: Later-born adults in late midlife reported attributing slightly higher importance to sexuality than their earlier-born peers and experiencing their sex life as slightly less pleasant. Effect sizes were small at the sample level (d <.15), but substantial for certain population segments. For example, historical increases in reported importance of sexuality were especially pronounced among women with no partner (d =.56). When controlling for socio-demographic, physical health, and psychosocial factors, cohort differences in perceived importance of sexuality remained significant, but those for enjoyment did not. Conclusions: Late-midlife sexuality undergoes historical changes. Specifically, reported perceived importance of sexuality has increased over historical time, especially in particular population segments. The aim of this study was to identify macro-level determinants of early work exit and investigate whether the effects of these determinants differ across educational groups. We used data from the Survey on Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) (2011–2013) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) (2010/2011–2012/2013) as well as macro-level data and included 10,584 participants in 14 European countries. We used logistic multilevel analyses to examine educational differences in macro-level determinants of early work exit. Macro-level determinants were: minimum unemployment replacement rates, expenditure on active labour market policies (aimed to help the unemployed find work) and passive labour market policies (unemployment and early retirement benefits), employment protection legislation (costs involved in dismissing individuals), unemployment rates, statutory pension age and implicit tax on continued work. We found low-educated workers to be more at risk of early work exit than higher educated workers. In low-educated men, higher unemployment replacement rates, higher expenditure on passive labour market policies, stricter employment protection legislation and a higher implicit tax on continued work were associated with a higher risk of early work exit, whereas no macro-level factors were associated with early work exit in highly educated men. In women, a higher expenditure on passive labour market policies and a higher implicit tax on continued work were determinants of early work exit, regardless of educational level. The Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) is a prospective cohort study of older adults in the Netherlands, initially based on a nationally representative sample of people aged 55–84 years. The study has been ongoing since 1992, and focuses on the determinants, trajectories and consequences of physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning. Strengths of the LASA study include its multidisciplinary character, the availability of over 25 years of follow-up, and the cohort-sequential design that allows investigations of longitudinal changes, cohort differences and time trends in functioning. The findings from LASA have been reported in over 600 publications so far (see www.lasa-vu.nl). This article provides an update of the design of the LASA study and its methods, on the basis of recent developments. We describe additional data collections, such as additional nine-monthly measurements in-between the regular three-yearly waves that have been conducted among the oldest old during 2016–2019, and the inclusion of a cohort of older Turkish and Moroccan migrants. Women's physical functioning declines with age and the rate of decline increases with age, but substantial disparities exist in trajectories over time. To inform development of interventions to optimise physical functioning across the adult life span, the aim is to explore which lifestyle and socio-economic position (SEP) factors contribute to disparities in physical functioning across the adult life span in women. Younger (born 1973–1978, n = 14,247), middle-aged (born 1946–1951, n = 13,715) and older (born 1921–1926, n = 12,432) participants from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health completed six questionnaires between 1996 and 2012 at approximate 3-year intervals. Physical functioning was measured with a 10-item subscale of the Short-Form Health Survey (score 1–100). Relationships between age and physical functioning were modelled using spline regression, stratified by baseline categories of physical activity, alcohol intake, smoking status, level of education, managing on income and index of neighbourhood socio-economic disadvantage for area. Multivariable models excluding one of the six factors were compared with models including all six factors to examine the relative importance of each factor. Women with unhealthy lifestyles (inactive, smokers or risky alcohol intake) and lower SEP had lower levels of physical functioning and more rapid declines across the adult life span. The variables with the greatest relative contribution to the models for physical functioning differed by age cohort: i.e. education and physical activity in younger women, managing on income and physical activity in middle-aged women and physical activity in older women. At the 10th anniversary of the European Journal of Ageing in 2013, this article makes an attempt towards a comprehensive overview of European ageing research (EAR) from the three perspectives of this Journal: the social, behavioural and health related domains. First, we provide some general observations on the state of EAR, noting the difficulties of defining this field. Second, we provide a description of EAR and its current trends and characteristics in terms of research themes and theoretical directions. Towards this end, we use the 10 volumes of the European Journal of Ageing as well as other available information. Third, we address the infrastructure of EAR as reflected in major studies, looking at data availability, language, education and training. Background: In the past decades knowledge on adequate treatment of affective disorders and awareness of the negative consequences of long-term benzodiazepine use increased. Therefore, a decrease in benzodiazepine use is expected, particularly in prolonged use. The aim of this study was to assess time trends in benzodiazepine use.Methods and Material: Data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) were used to investigate trends in benzodiazepine use between 1992 and 2002 in two population-based samples aged 55-64 years. Differences between the two samples with respect to benzodiazepine use and to sociodemographic, physical health and mental health characteristics were described and tested with chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses.Results: Benzodiazepine use remained stable over 10 years, with 7.8% in LASA-1 (n = 874) and 7.9% in LASA-2 (n = 919) (p = 0.90) with a persisting preponderance in women and in people with low education, low income, chronic physical diseases, functional limitations, cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety complaints, sleep problems and when using antidepressants. Long-term use remained high with 70% in 1992 and 80% in 2002 of total benzodiazepine use.Conclusion: In the Dutch population aged 55-64, overall benzodiazepine use remained stable from 1992 to 2002, with a high proportion of long-term users, despite the effort to reduce benzodiazepine use and the renewal of the guidelines. Midlife is a period during which ageing-related health problems first emerge. In view of increasing life expectancy, it is of great importance that people in midlife adapt to possible health problems, to be able to lead productive and engaged lives as long as possible. It may be expected that given the better circumstances in which more recent cohorts grew up, they are better equipped to adapt to health problems than earlier cohorts. This study addresses the question if the way people in midlife adapt to health problems is or is not improving in the Netherlands. The study is based on the nationally representative 1992–1993 and 2002–2003 cohorts of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (ages 55–64 years), with follow-up cycles in 1995–1996 ( n = 811) and 2005–2006 ( n = 829), respectively. Mastery is considered as a measure of adaptation, and 3-year change in mastery is compared in subjects without and with health problems at baseline. A rise was observed in the prevalence of diabetes, chronic lung disease, arthritis, subthreshold depression, and disability. Subjects without health problems in the recent cohort had better mastery than their counterparts in the early cohort. Regardless of cohort membership, mastery declined over 3 years for those with subthreshold depression, mild disability, chronic lung disease, and stroke. In the recent cohort only, mastery declined for those with cognitive impairment, but improved for those with heart disease. These findings do not support the expectation that recent cohorts are better equipped to deal with health problems for conditions other than heart disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With ageing, older people can become frail, and this has been shown to be associated with a decrease in well-being. Observational studies provide evidence of a positive effect of coping resources on well-being. The question is: can coping resources be improved in vulnerable older people? The Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) is a target group-specific intervention which aims to promote the self-management of older people who are confronted with deteriorating health. The aim of this study was to review intervention studies focusing on the CDSMP and to draw conclusions on the benefits of the program. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed and PsychINFO to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on the CDSMP. Nine RCTs focusing on relatively young older adults, 75% of whom with an average age between 49 and 65 years, were included. We found that the CDSMP was consistently beneficial for Health behaviour, especially with regard to the variables of exercise and self-care. For Health status, the majority of studies only showed improvement in the domain of health distress. Most of the studies that investigated Self-efficacy showed convincing improvement in self-efficacy, cognitive symptom management and mental stress management. In Health care utilization, there was no significant decrease. On the whole, the studies showed that CDSMP led to an increase in physical exercise, a decrease in health distress, an improvement in self-care, and it had a beneficial effect on self-efficacy. Background and aims: It is often assumed that aging is accompanied by diverse and constant functional and cognitive decline, and it is therefore surprising that the well-being of older persons does not appear to decline in the same way. This study investigates longitudinally whether well-being in older persons changes due to Persistent Deterioration of Functioning (PDF). Methods: Data were collected in the context of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). Conditions of PDF are persistent decline in cognitive functioning, physical functioning and increase in chronic diseases. Measurements of well-being included life satisfaction, positive affect, and valuation of life. T-tests were used to analyse mean difference scores for well-being, and univariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed to examine changes in three well-being outcomes in relation to PDF. Results: Cross-sectional analyses showed significant differences and associations between the two PDF subgroups and non-PDF for well-being at T3. In longitudinal analyses, we found significant decreases in and associations with wellbeing over time in respondents fulfilling one PDF condition (mild PDF). For respondents fulfilling two or more PDF conditions (severe PDF), longitudinally no significant associations were found. Conclusions: Cognitive aspects of well-being (life satisfaction and valuation of life) and the affective element (positive affect) of well-being appear to be influenced negatively by mild PDF, whereas well-being does not seem to be diminished in persons with more severe PDF. Objectives: To assess country-specific gender differences in depressive symptoms and to explore if exposures and vulnerabilities vary by gender among older men and women from four European countries and Israel.Methods: Data on 4,449 subjects between 75 and 84 years old were derived from CLESA ("Cross-national determinants of quality of life and health services for the elderly". A ratio score of depressive symptoms derived form the CESD and GDS scales was regressed on education, marital status, living arrangements, comorbidity and disability and all interactions of these factors with gender and country.Results: The prevalence of depressive symptoms is higher in women than in men in every country, except Sweden. Women are more likely to be exposed to socio-structural risks, and have poorer health and more disability than men in most of the countries. However, women are not more vulnerable to these risk factors.Conclusions: Findings indicate that the female excess in depressive symptoms remains after taking into account the higher prevalence of socio-structural and health-related risk factors and that older women are not more vulnerable than older men to these known risk factors, suggesting the existence of additional pathways linked to gender and/or biological sex. Background and aims: This study aimed at examining the association between unhealthy lifestyle in young age, midlife and/or old age and physical decline in old age, and between chronic exposure to an unhealthy lifestyle throughout life and physical decline in old age. Methods: The study sample included 1297 respondents of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). Lifestyle in old age (55-85 y) was assessed at baseline, whereas lifestyle in young age (around 25 y) and midlife (around 40 y) were assessed retrospectively. Lifestyle factors included physical activity, body mass index (BMI), number of alcohol drinks per week and smoking. Physical decline was calculated as a change in physical performance score between baseline and six-year follow-up. Results: Of the lifestyle factors present in old age, a BMI of 25-29 vs BMI <25 kg/m² (OR=1.6; 95% Cl: 1,1-2.2) and a BMI of ≥30 vs BMI <25 kg/m² (OR=1.8: 95% Cl: 1.2-2.7) were associated with physical decline in old age. Being physically inactive in old age was not significantly associated with an increased risk of physical decline, although, being physically inactive in both midlife and old age increased the odds of physical decline in old age to 1.6 (95% Cl: 1.1-2.4), compared with respondents who were physically inactive in midlife and physically active in old age. Being overweight in both age periods was associated with an OR of 1.5 (95% Cl: 1.1-2.2). Conclusions: These data suggest that overweight in old age, and chronic exposure to physical inactivity or overweight throughout life, increases the risk of physical decline in old age. Background The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the use of medication and depression in the elderly. Method A cross-sectional population-based study was conducted. Associations between the use of medication and depression are corrected for eight other etiological correlates of depression. The sample consisted of 2646 elderly people living in 11 municipalities in the Netherlands. Subjects were taken from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam, a 10-year longitudinal study on predictors and consequences of changes in well-being and autonomy in the older population. Associations are expressed in odds ratios (95% Confidence Intervals) between the use of (groups of) medication and depression. Results are adjusted for age, sex, urbanicity, socioeconomic status, physical health, social and interpersonal support, comorbidity with other psychiatric disease and personality. The Population Attributable Risk percentage was calculated for selected groups of medication. Results After correction for competing risk factors of depression, 22 individual medications and nine groups of medications had unique associations with depression. Objective: Better understanding of the relationship between pain and depression in older adults in the community is of particular importance considering the high prevalence of both conditions in these adults. In the present study, the longitudinal relationship between pain and depression in older adults was examined, thereby taking into account the role of physical disability and the possibly modifying effect of sex and age.Methods: The study is based on a sample which at the outset consisted of 325 non-depressed and 327 depressed persons (55-85) drawn from a larger random community-based sample in the Netherlands. Depression (CES-D) and pain (subscale of the Nottingham Health Profile) were measured at eight successive waves over 3 years.Results: Pain was very persistent over time as was to a lesser extent depression. The prognosis of comorbid pain and depression was poor. In longitudinal analyses (Generalized Estimating Equations), pain and depression were strongly associated. At the symptom level, the pain-depression relationship was found to be stronger in men than in women. There was no effect of age on the pain-depression relationship. No support was found for the hypothesis that the pain-depression relationship is mediated by disability.Conclusion: The persistent nature of pain and to a lesser extent depression and the intimate and probably reciprocal association between them stress the need for adequate treatment strategies. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with substantial health impact that may already become apparent in early disease. This study aims to examine the features of subjects with COPD in a Dutch population-based sample and compare their physical status, mental status, and social status to non-COPD subjects. This study made use of Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) data. Demographics, clinical characteristics, self-reported diseases, post-bronchodilator spirometry, physical, mental, and social status were assessed. A number of 810 subjects (50.5% male, mean age 60.5 ± 2.9 years) were included. Subjects with COPD (n = 68, mean FEV1 67.6 [IQR 60.4-80.4] %.) had a slower walking speed than non-COPD subjects, p = 0.033. When compared to non-COPD subjects, COPD subjects gave a lower rating on their health (physical subscale of SF-12: 15 [IQR 16.0-19.0] vs. 18 [IQR 11.0-17.0] points) and life (EQ5D VAS: 75 [IQR 70.0-90.0] vs. 80 points [IQR 65.0-85.5]) surveys. COPD subjects also had a more impaired disease-specific health status (CAT: 9.5 ± 5.9 vs. 6.7 ± 5.2, respectively), were less likely to have a partner (69% vs. 84%, respectively) and received emotional support less often (24% vs. 36%, respectively) compared to non-COPD subjects (All comparisons p < 0.001). In a population-based sample, subjects with COPD had a reduced physical performance, a more impaired disease-specific health status and were more socially deprived compared to non-COPD subjects. These impairments need to be taken into consideration when setting up a management program for patients with mild COPD. Patients with early-stage chronic lung disease need holistic support to limit the physical, mental and social impacts of the condition. There is more to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) than persistent airflow limitation; systemic effects, including loss of muscle strength and higher risk of heart conditions, mental health and social problems can manifest from the early stages. Frits Franssen at CIRO, the Netherlands, and co-workers interviewed 810 participants aged 55-65 from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam to investigate the physical, mental and social status of COPD sufferers and compare them with healthy controls. Those with COPD were more likely to walk slower, tire easily and perceive themselves as having poor overall health.
