Abstract One might think that the elementary teachings of an instrument should follow uniform planning patterns. The present study shows discrepancies between the models developed by different Spanish conservatories, mainly attributable to the guidelines established by each autonomous community concerning the order of the curriculum markedly influenced by each community’s circumstances. This article analyzes and compares first-year didactic programs in the elementary music teachings of 40 Spanish conservatories within the cello specialty. This work shows significant heterogeneity in planning, marked mainly by the variety of content in planning. The lack of unified criteria and standards for teaching planning is evident in teachers’ freedom to establish the contents and evaluation criteria within the framework of regulations in each autonomous community, whose generality prevents the establishment of standard criteria. It is urgent and necessary to design training plans and standard content that consider improved learning practices and strategies to offer quality training based on common standards.

Facial expression perception is influenced by body posture, with perception biased toward the body emotion. Previous research has suggested that the magnitude of this biasing influence of body posture is driven by individual differences in the precision of facial expression representations underlying discrimination abilities, where lower precision leads to a greater influence of body posture. It is unclear however whether similar mechanisms might drive the influence of contextual cues in Autism, which is often characterised by reduced facial expression discrimination abilities. Here, we addressed this question by using online psychophysical methods to determine the precision of isolated face and body expression representations of anger and disgust, and the influence of body on facial expression perception, in autistic and non-autistic adults. Both groups showed a strong influence of body context on facial expression perception, but this influence was larger in the autistic group, mirroring their lower overall precision of facial expression representations relative to non-autistic individuals. Crucially, the magnitude of the biasing influence of body posture in both groups was related to the precision of individuals' facial expression representations. Huanglongbing (HLB) is the most devastating disease of citrus. Although no citrus species are known to be immune to HLB, some (e.g., Persian lime [Citrus latifolia]) have a high level of tolerance. Differentially expressed genes in the WRKY transcription factor (TF) family have been identified in another tolerant citrus, suggesting an association with such tolerance. Therefore, here we searched for the conserved WRKY domain of WRKY family members in the transcriptome of C. latifolia infected with HLB, characterized the identified ClWRKY genes, and determined which were differentially expressed in leaves with HLB symptoms; 177 transcripts with the WRKY domain were identified, and 32 ClWRKY genes were characterized for conserved motifs, gene ontology, and coexpression networks among the 32 ClWRKY genes. These genes were thus shown to be involved in response to external stimuli and biotic and abiotic stresses. Four differentially expressed ClWRKY genes (ClWRKY20, 23, 47, and 65) were identified in the transcriptome and validated by qRT-PCR. The possible roles of these genes in the tolerance of C. latifolia to HLB are discussed based on the function of homologs of these genes in other plant species. Purpose: Clinicians are often uncertain about their prognostic estimates, which may impede prognostic communication and clinical decision-making. We assessed the impact of a web-based prognostic calculator on physicians' prognostic confidence. Methods: In this prospective study, palliative care physicians estimated the prognosis of patients with advanced cancer in an outpatient clinic using the temporal, surprise, and probabilistic approaches for 6 m, 3 m, 2 m, 1 m, 2 w, 1 w, and 3 d. They then reviewed information from www.predictsurvival.com, which calculated survival estimates from seven validated prognostic scores, including the Palliative Prognostic Score, Palliative Prognostic Index, and Palliative Performance Status, and again provided their prognostic estimates after calculator use. The primary outcome was prognostic confidence in temporal CPS (0–10 numeric rating scale, 0 = not confident, 10 = most confident). Results: Twenty palliative care physicians estimated prognoses for 217 patients. The mean (standard deviation) prognostic confidence significantly increased from 5.59 (1.68) before to 6.94 (1.39) after calculator use (p < 0.001). A significantly greater proportion of physicians reported feeling confident enough in their prognosis to share it with patients (44% vs. 74%, p < 0.001) and formulate care recommendations (80% vs. 94%, p < 0.001) after calculator use. Prognostic accuracy did not differ significantly before or after calculator use, ranging from 55–100%, 29–98%, and 48–100% for the temporal, surprise, and probabilistic approaches, respectively. Conclusion: This web-based prognostic calculator was associated with increased prognostic confidence and willingness to discuss prognosis. Student-created videos engage students' interests, creativity, and content knowledge and enrich collaborative learning in STEM education. These videos enhance critical thinking and analytical skills, which are essential tools in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This study presents the results of such an assignment across several STEM areas (biology, chemistry, exercise science, information technology, and mathematics) at a minority-serving, liberal arts higher education institution in the southeast region of the United States. Undergraduate students (n = 557) across varied, online course modalities (synchronous and asynchronous) were required to create four problem-solving videos 3–8 min in duration. Assessment tools included a self-assessment of learning gains survey given to control and experimental groups and a post-video creation survey given only to experimental groups. Grade data was also collected from all sections. Comparing the experimental and control groups, students showed a statistically significant gain in their ability to give oral presentations, create videos, and edit videos. Qualitative data from free-response questions corroborate these gains and suggest that students also grew in content knowledge and conceptual understanding through these assignments. Our study implements a multimedia theoretical framework which suggests students learn more effectively from consuming presentations with both auditory and visual components. Our results suggest students see similar gains from producing presentations with both auditory and visual components. Further our results suggest that multimedia production enhances students' presentation skills. From a practical perspective, this study suggests that faculty should incorporate student-created videos in online classes, which typically require oral presentations in person. Faculty are also advised to require oral and visual components within these videos to maximize learning gains from the perspective of a multimedia theoretical framework. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper delves into the character concept as applied to reproduction. Our argument is that the prevailing functional-adaptationist perspective falls short in explaining the evolution of reproductive traits, and we propose an alternative organismal-relational approach that incorporates the developmental and interactive aspects of reproduction. To begin, we define the functional individuation of reproductive traits as evolutionary strategies aimed at enhancing fitness, and we demonstrate how this perspective influences the classification of reproductive characters and modes, the comprehension of shared traits as resulting from conflicts of evolutionary interest between individuals, and the explanation of reproductive diversity. After outlining the shortcomings of this framework, we introduce an organismal-relational approach grounded in evolutionary developmental studies of reproduction. This view provides a revised classification for reproductive characters and modes and offers a new understanding of interorganismal traits that takes into account their inherently relational nature. Lastly, we present the research agenda that emerges from this approach, which addresses the core explanatory gaps left by the adaptationist perspective, including the explanation of reproductive homologies and homoplasies, the developmental constraints associated with the evolution of reproductive modes, and the evolvability of reproductive characters. In the university context, the self-regulated learning processes play an instrumental role as a strategy that allows students to achieve a greater academic self-concept due to their awareness of their academic development and their active participation in this process. This study involved 276 students of the Primary Education Degree of the University of Jaén, (Spain), participated, of which 213 (77.2%) were female and 63 (22.8%) were male, with the average age of 19.97 years (± 2.834). The Inventory of Self-Regulation of Learning Processes (IPAA) and the Academic Self-Concept Scale (EAA) were applied. The objective was to provide enough evidence on the complementarity of self-regulation learning processes with academic self-concept. This study introduces the combined used of structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and necessary conditions analysis (NCA) to investigate the proposed hypotheses. The results of the model found high coefficients of determination Execution [(Q2 = 0.261); (R² =0.547)]; Assessment [(Q2 = 0.249); (R² =0.393)]; and Academic self-concept [(Q2 = 0.074); (R²=0.329)]. The results have corroborated the composite use of PLS-SEM and NCA allow to identify some of the essential factors of academic self-concept according to the rationale of need. Permanent artificial lighting systems in tourist underground environments promote the proliferation of photoautotrophic biofilms, commonly referred to as lampenflora, on damp rock and sediment surfaces. These green-colored biofilms play a key role in the alteration of native community biodiversity and the irreversible deterioration of colonized substrates. Comprehensive chemical or physical treatments to sustainably remove and control lampenflora are still lacking. This study employs an integrated approach to explore the biodiversity, eco-physiology and molecular composition of lampenflora from the Pertosa-Auletta Cave, in Italy. Reflectance analysis showed that photoautotrophic biofilms are able to absorb the totality of the visible spectrum, reflecting only the near-infrared light. This phenomenon results from the production of secondary pigments and the adaptability of these organisms to different metabolic regimes. The biofilm structure mainly comprises filamentous organisms intertwined with the underlying mineral layer, which promote structural alterations of the rock layer due to the biochemical attack of both prokaryotes (mostly represented by Brasilonema angustatum) and eukaryotes (Ephemerum spinulosum and Pseudostichococcus monallantoides), composing the community. Regardless of the corrosion processes, secondary CaCO3 minerals are also found in the biological matrix, which are probably biologically mediated. Stroke, the second leading cause of mortality globally, predominantly results from ischemic conditions. Immediate attention and diagnosis, related to the characterization of brain lesions, play a crucial role in patient prognosis. Standard stroke protocols include an initial evaluation from a non-contrast CT to discriminate between hemorrhage and ischemia. However, non-contrast CTs lack sensitivity in detecting subtle ischemic changes in this phase. Alternatively, diffusion-weighted MRI studies provide enhanced capabilities, yet are constrained by limited availability and higher costs. Hence, we idealize new approaches that integrate ADC stroke lesion findings into CT, to enhance the analysis and accelerate stroke patient management. This study details a public challenge where scientists applied top computational strategies to delineate stroke lesions on CT scans, utilizing paired ADC information. Also, it constitutes the first effort to build a paired dataset with NCCT and ADC studies of acute ischemic stroke patients. Submitted algorithms were validated with respect to the references of two expert radiologists. The best achieved Dice score was 0.2 over a test study with 36 patient studies. Despite all the teams employing specialized deep learning tools, results reveal limitations of computational approaches to support the segmentation of small lesions with heterogeneous density. Research has demonstrated erosion of empathy in students during medical education. Particularly, U.S. studies have demonstrated empathy declines during clinical training in the third and fourth year of traditional medical programs. Yet, studies conducted outside the U.S. have not confirmed this trend. Timing and extent of patient interactions have been identified as empathy-protective factors. The need to examine empathy within different learning contexts has been noted, as has the need for longitudinal and time-series research designs to analyze trajectories. Between fall 2010 and spring 2019, we assessed empathy longitudinally among six student cohorts (N = 493) at a U.S. medical school, where patient interaction occurs early and throughout an integrated curriculum. Empathy levels of students in each cohort were assessed at five time points utilizing the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Student version. We hypothesized empathy levels will not degrade by program end, and trajectories will not show patterns of decline in Years Three and Four. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Linear Mixed Model (LMM) analyses were used to analyze differences at baseline and changes in empathy trajectories. ANOVA analyses revealed statistically significant differences at baseline by class cohort (F(5, 487) = [23.28], p < 0.001). LMM analyses indicated empathy was either significantly higher or not different at the end of the program (F(19, 1676) = [13.97], p < 0.001). Empathy trajectories varied among cohorts; yet, none resulted in an overall empathy decline by the end of the program. Findings demonstrate empathy in U.S. medical students can be unchanged or higher by the end of medical education. Outcomes are consistent with reports of non-declining medical student empathy outside the U.S. and support the notion of context-specificity. Results further support recent research, suggesting decreases in empathy during training can stabilize or increase by program end. Although caregiving responsibilities and need for support persist and evolve across the life course in families with autistic youth or youth with other developmental disabilities (DDs), little is known about support during their child's adulthood years. Therefore, the present study used a mixed-methods approach to examine change and stability in formal and informal family support across the transition to adulthood. Caregivers of 126 individuals with autism or DDs completed a modified version of the Family Support Scale, including open-ended questions, at five time points from adolescence (age 16) into young adulthood (age 22). Caregivers reported that informal support from family members was the most frequently used, helpful, and valued source of support with relative stability across time. In contrast, the reported helpfulness, use, and value of formal support (e.g., professionals, schools) for caregivers declined over time. Qualitative content analyses revealed characteristics of highly valued support included support type (e.g., instrumental or emotional) and features of the support source (e.g., their understanding). There was a shift to valuing emotional support more than instrumental support over time, especially for caregivers of less able adults. Partnership and dependability emerged as highly valued features of the support source. These findings fit within a social convoy perspective and likely reflect the "service cliff" experienced by autistic individuals or people with DDs and their families. As social networks shrink over time and formal services are less readily available in adulthood, remaining sources of support, particularly from family members, become increasingly important. The authors report their experience with twenty-one consecutive patients who presented with symptoms and imaging characteristics of a herniated lumbar disc; of whom, at the time of surgery had a vascular loop instead. The procedure was performed on 14 women and seven men with a mean age of 39 years. Clinical complaints included lumbar aching with one limb overt radiculopathy in all patients; with additional sphincter dysfunction in two cases. Symptoms had developed within a mean period of three months. In all patients, the disc was exposed through an L5-S1 (n = 10); L4-L5 (n = 5) and L3-L4 (n = 6) open minimal laminotomy. In 16 patients, rather than a herniated disc they had a lumbar epidural varix, while an arterio-venous fistula was found in the remaining five cases. In all cases, the vascular disorder was resected and its subjacent disc was left intact. One patient had a postoperative blood transfusion. While the radiculopathy dysfunction improved in all patients, four patients reported lasting lumbar pain following surgery. The postoperative imaging confirmed the resolution of the vascular anomaly and an intact disc. The mean length of the follow-up period was 47 months. Either epidural varix or arterio-venous fistula in the lumbar area may mimic a herniated disc on imaging studies. With the usual technique they can be operated safely. Purpose of Review: Differences in HF biomarker levels by sex may be due to hormonal, genetic, and fat distribution differences. Knowledge of these differences is scarce, and it is not well established whether they may affect their usefulness in the management of HF. Recent Findings: The different biomarker profiles in women and men have been confirmed in recent studies: in women, markers of cardiac stretch and fibrosis (NP and galectin-3) are higher, whereas in men, higher levels of markers of cardiac injury and inflammation (cTn and sST2) are found. The use of new biomarkers, together with growing evidence that a multimarker approach can provide better risk stratification, raises the question of building models that incorporate sex-specific diagnostic criteria. Summary: More and more research are being devoted to understanding sex-related differences in HF. The aim of this review is to review the dynamics of HF biomarkers according to sex and in different situations, to learn whether these sex differences may affect their use in the diagnosis and follow-up of HF patients. The circadian clock system coordinates metabolic, physiological, and behavioral functions across a 24-h cycle, crucial for adapting to environmental changes. Disruptions in circadian rhythms contribute to major metabolic pathologies like obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms governing circadian control is vital for identifying therapeutic targets. It is well characterized that chromatin remodeling and 3D structure at genome regulatory elements contributes to circadian transcriptional cycles; yet the impact of rhythmic chromatin topology in metabolic disease is largely unexplored. In this study, we explore how the spatial configuration of the genome adapts to diet, rewiring circadian transcription and contributing to dysfunctional metabolism. We describe daily fluctuations in chromatin contacts between distal regulatory elements of metabolic control genes in livers from lean and obese mice and identify specific lipid-responsive regions recruiting the clock molecular machinery. Interestingly, under high-fat feeding, a distinct interactome for the clock-controlled gene Dbp strategically promotes the expression of distal metabolic genes including Fgf21. Alongside, new chromatin loops between regulatory elements from genes involved in lipid metabolism control contribute to their transcriptional activation. These enhancers are responsive to lipids through CEBPβ, counteracting the circadian repressor REVERBa. Our findings highlight the intricate coupling of circadian gene expression to a dynamic nuclear environment under high-fat feeding, supporting a temporally regulated program of gene expression and transcriptional adaptation to diet. Evidence of microscopic inhomogeneities of the side source/drain contacts in 300 mm wafer integrated MoS2 field-effect transistors is presented. In particular, the presence of a limited number of low Schottky barrier spots through which channel carriers are predominantly injected is demonstrated by the dramatic current changes induced by individual charge traps located near the source contact. Two distinct types of "contact-impacting traps" are identified. Type-1 trap is adjacent to the contact interface and exchanges carriers with the metal. Its impact is only observable when the adjacent contact is the reverse-biased FET source and limits the channel current. Type-2 trap is located in the AlOx gate oxide interlayer, near the source contact, and exchanges carriers with the channel. Its capture/emission time constants exhibit both a gate and drain bias dependence due to the high sensitivity of the contact regions to the applied lateral and vertical fields. Unlike typical channel-impacting oxide traps, both types of reported defects affect the Schottky barrier height and width rather than the threshold voltage and result in giant random telegraph noise (RTN). Lung type 2 pneumocytes (T2Ps) and alveolar macrophages (AMs) play crucial roles in the synthesis, recycling and catabolism of surfactant material, a lipid/protein fluid essential for respiratory function. The liver X receptors (LXR), LXRα and LXRβ, are transcription factors important for lipid metabolism and inflammation. While LXR activation exerts anti-inflammatory actions in lung injury caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and other inflammatory stimuli, the full extent of the endogenous LXR transcriptional activity in pulmonary homeostasis is incompletely understood. Here, using mice lacking LXRα and LXRβ as experimental models, we describe how the loss of LXRs causes pulmonary lipidosis, pulmonary congestion, fibrosis and chronic inflammation due to defective de novo synthesis and recycling of surfactant material by T2Ps and defective phagocytosis and degradation of excess surfactant by AMs. LXR-deficient T2Ps display aberrant lamellar bodies and decreased expression of genes encoding for surfactant proteins and enzymes involved in cholesterol, fatty acids, and phospholipid metabolism. Moreover, LXR-deficient lungs accumulate foamy AMs with aberrant expression of cholesterol and phospholipid metabolism genes. Using a house dust mite aeroallergen-induced mouse model of asthma, we show that LXR-deficient mice exhibit a more pronounced airway reactivity to a methacholine challenge and greater pulmonary infiltration, indicating an altered physiology of LXR-deficient lungs. Moreover, pretreatment with LXR agonists ameliorated the airway reactivity in WT mice sensitized to house dust mite extracts, confirming that LXR plays an important role in lung physiology and suggesting that agonist pharmacology could be used to treat inflammatory lung diseases. Recent research has increasingly focused on synthesizing nanoparticles (NPs) through various methods to determine how these processes influence their characteristics, and consequently, their biological activity. Calcium zinc hydroxide dihydrate (CaZn2(OH)6·2H2O) nanoparticles, designates as CZ, were obtained via sol–gel (CZ-SG), hydrothermal (CZ-HT), and microwave (CZ-MW) methods, and their properties were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM, and BET analyses. The different synthesis revealed distinct CZ nanoparticle attributes, including variations in crystallite sizes (72 nm for CZ-SG, 65 nm for CZ-HT and CZ-MW) and morphologies (fibrous for CZ-HT and spherical agglomerates for CZ-SG and CZ-MW). Surface area analysis showed low values across all synthesis methods, with CZ-HT exhibiting the best surface area (8.154 m2/g). The investigation also explored how these synthesis routes influence antifungal efficacy against fourteen fungal strains associated with the biodeterioration of limestone cultural heritage structures. Our results highlight the notable antifungal activity of CZ-NPs, particularly those synthesized via the CZ-HT method, which demonstrated the most effective antifungal action as evidenced by the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). This effectiveness is attributed to the unique fibrous morphology, which proves to be highly inhibitory to fungal cell proliferation. These findings not only advance our understanding of CZ NPs-mediated antifungal mechanisms but also open a new effort for the development of effective preservation strategies for cultural heritage conservation. The sea cucumber Holothuria inornata is a species whose populations are at risk. This study aims to investigate its reproduction, embryonic and larval development, and the settlement of H. inornata under an algae-based diet. Twenty breeders were utilized, which underwent a 1.5-h desiccation followed by a thermal shock (27 to 32 °C). Embryonic development stage was recorded, and from the auricularia larval stage, three treatments were evaluated: A: Chaetoceros muelleri and Isochrysis galbana (1:1 ratio); B: C. muelleri, I. galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, and Pavlova lutheri (1:1:1:1 ratio); and C: Chaetoceros muelleri, I. galbana, T. suecica, P. lutheri, Navicula sp. (LPU-6) (1:1:1:1:1 ratio), with a larval density of 100 larvae L−1 in triplicate. The embryonic development in H. inornata lasts for 3 days, five larval stages were recorded: (1) Auricularia (days 3–8, 300 to 520 μm), (2) late auricularia (days 8–11, 520 to 670 μm), (3) doliolaria (days 11–13, 460 to 550 μm), (4) late doliolaria (days 13–16, 400 to 440 μm), and (5) pentacula (days 15–19, 650 to 900 μm). The post-settlement survival rate was 0% under treatment A, 2.38 ± 0.16% under treatment B, and 3.79 ± 0.41% under treatment C. Based on these findings, we concluded that H. inornata specie spawn through a combined desiccation-thermal shock process with a larval period of up to 19 days, and subsequently produce juvenile individuals in captivity with a varied microalgae diet. The implementation of a system to assess the risk of Amyloodinium ocellatum occurrence in rearing ponds in fish farms located in southern Spain is a fundamental aspect to ensure the economic viability of these facilities. For this purpose, a computer program (called Amy) for Windows PCs and an application for mobile devices (AmyAPP), based on the Android operating system, were developed integrating transformation functions and weightings associated with environmental parameters and fish behavioural factors from which it is possible to estimate the level of risk of occurrence of A. ocellatum. The weights for each of the environmental parameters and behavioural factors were estimated from the responses of a panel of experts (the fish farmers) using a Delphi methodology. The results indicate that, under operational validation, Amy/AmyAPP responses were statistically sensitive to the occurrence of A. ocellatum outbreaks in sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) rearing ponds. Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) pose significant challenges for biomedicine in the twenty-first century, particularly considering the global demographic ageing and the subsequent increase in their prevalence. Characterized as progressive, chronic and debilitating, they often result in higher mortality rates compared with the general population. Research agendas and biomedical technologies are shaped by power relations, ultimately affecting patient wellbeing and care. Drawing on the concepts of bio- and necropolitics, introduced by philosophers Foucault and Mbembe, respectively, this perspective examines the interplay between the territoriality and governmentality around demographic ageing, ND and death, focussing on knowledge production as a dispositif of power by highlighting the marginal role that the phenomenon of mortality plays in the ND research landscape. We propose a shift into acknowledging the coloniality of knowledge and embracing its situatedness to attain knowledge 'from death', understood as an epistemic position from which novel approaches and practices could emerge. Transdisciplinary approaches combining technical perspectives with qualitative insights from the social sciences and non-academic stakeholders have emerged as a promising way to address the complexity of current socioenvironmental crises. However, transdisciplinary incorporation of diverse interests, knowledge, and worldviews requires acknowledging and addressing inherent inequities. Our case study combines two complementary transdisciplinary studies, the first conducted by a biologist/ecologist being trained in inter- and transdisciplinary methods at the time of the study, applying a quick participatory diagnosis in a fishing community, while the second is conducted by a social scientist studying the research group itself. Our results allow an exploration of the challenges and possibilities of navigating from transdisciplinary ideals to practical implementation. Our findings highlight the importance of nurturing relationships built on care, reciprocity, and openness to address the power imbalances inherent in university-community participatory practices. We suggest that the community's autonomy and agency can be preserved while actively engaging its members in the transdisciplinary process, alleviating power differences and fostering a collaborative and equitable transdisciplinary framework. Overall, we emphasize the significance of integrating participatory methods, critical reflexivity, and attention to power dynamics in realizing the potential of transdisciplinary approaches for addressing complex conservation challenges and fostering meaningful community engagement. Temperature up-shift and UV-A radiation effects on growth, lipid damage, fatty acid (FA) composition and expression of desaturase genes desA and desB were investigated in the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa. Although UV-A damaging effect has been well documented, reports on the interactive effects of UV radiation exposure and warming on cyanobacteria are scarce. Temperature and UV-A doses were selected based on the physiological responses previously obtained by studies with the same M. aeruginosa strain used in this study. Cells pre-grown at 26 °C were incubated at the same temperature or 29 °C and exposed to UV-A + PAR and only PAR for 9 days. Growth rate was significantly affected by UV-A radiation independently of the temperature throughout the experiment. High temperature produced lipid damage significantly higher throughout the experiment, decreasing at day 9 as compared to 26 °C. In addition, the cells grown at 29 °C under UV-A displayed a decrease in polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) levels, with ω3 PUFA being mostly affected at the end of exposure. Previously, we reported that UV-A-induced lipid damage affects differentially ω3 and ω6 PUFAs. We report that UV-A radiation leads to an upregulation of desA, possibly due to lipid damage. In addition, the temperature up-shift upregulates desA and desB regardless of the radiation. The lack of lipid damage for UV-A on ω3 could explain the lack of transcription induction of desB. Purpose of Review: The polypill strategy, originally developed to improve medication adherence, has demonstrated efficacy in improving baseline systolic blood pressures and cholesterol levels in multiple clinical trials. However, the long-term clinical impact of improved major cardiovascular events (MACE) outcomes by the polypill remains uncertain. Recent Findings: Recent trials with long-term follow-up, which included minority groups and people with low socioeconomic status, have shown non-inferiority with no difference in adverse effects rates for the secondary prevention of MACE. Summary: Although the polypill strategy was initially introduced to improve adherence to guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) for cardiovascular complications, the strategy has surpassed standard medical treatment for secondary prevention of MACE outcomes. Person-centered approaches in personality allow greater understanding of how different subpopulations with specific personality profiles are linked with relevant outcomes. Studies under the Five Factor Model agree on the observation of a Resilient, an Undercontrolled and an Overcontrolled profile. However, studies using maladaptive traits are much more limited. The present research identify personality profiles based on the 25 maladaptative facet and examined the relationships with personality dysfunctioning, internalizing and externalizing symptoms. A mixed sample composed of community adults (n = 742) and patients (n = 312) completed the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Short Form, the Inventory of Depression and Anxiety Symptoms-II, Externalizing Spectrum Inventory–Brief From, the 12 items Spanish version of the WHO Disability Assessment Schedule II and Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0. Latent profile analysis was performed on PID-5-SF score. The scores on internalizing, externalizing and functioning were compared across the profiles. Four profiles emerged: Resilient, Undercontrolled, Overcontrolled, and Ordinary type. The Overcontrolled and Undercontrolled types showed higher scores on pathology scales. While the Overcontrolled profile appeared more related to internalizing symptoms and impairment in self-functioning, the Undercontrolled profile was more linked to higher scores on externalizing symptoms and interpersonal dysfunctioning. Trichinella is a nematode that are spread by the consumption of parasitized meat. Carnivora, a mammalian order, serve as key hosts for this parasite. However, evidence of Trichinella in wildlife from the Neotropics is extremely scarce, with reports documenting its presence only for five carnivore species: two Felidae, one Otariidae and two Mustelidae. Other widely distributed species that are consumed as bushmeat, such as Procyonidae, have not been studied in this context. A long-term study was performed for antibodies against Trichinella in coatis (Nasua narica) and common raccoons (Procyon lotor) in southeastern Mexico. Between the summer of 2009 to the winter 2013, a total of 291 coati samples and 125 raccoon samples were collected from a tropical green area located within an urban zone. An Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect antibodies against the excretory and secretory products of Trichinella spiralis muscle larva. ELISA-positive samples were further confirmed by Western Blot analysis. Results showed no evidence of antibodies during the first two years of study. However, in 2011, a sudden appearance of anti-Trichinella occurred. The seroprevalence reached its highest peak of 43% for coatis during winter 2013 and 53% for raccoons in summer 2013. The full utilization of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) faces several challenges, among which is realizing uniform material deposition on the 2D surface. Typical strategies to enable material growth lead to a poor interface quality, degrading the 2D TMDC's properties. In this work, a sacrificial, graphene oxide-based seeding layer is used (1) as passivation layer, protecting the underlying 2D TMDC and (2) as nucleation layer, enabling uniform material growth. Graphene is transferred on monolayer WS2, establishing a high-quality van der Waals interface. After transfer, the polymeric residues on graphene are cleaned via a combination of wet- and dry treatments and functionalized via dry UV/O3 oxidation. The rate of graphene oxidation is shown to be substrate dependent, which is explained by UV light-induced ultrafast charge transfer between the graphene and WS2 monolayer. The carbon-oxygen functionalities serve as nucleation sites in a subsequent HfO2 ALD process, achieving more uniform dielectric growth and faster layer closure compared to direct deposition. The graphene-based nucleation- / passivation approach offers adaptability, allowing for tailored surface chemistry to enable any alternative material growth, while maintaining a prefect van der Waals interface. Introduction: Characterizing lens thickness (LT) in patients with cataracts is important for better understanding the lens aging process and for designing new intraocular lens power formulas. This study aimed to analyze the influence of common senile cataract formation on the LT, anterior (ACS) and posterior (PCS) cortex space, and nuclear thickness (NT), controlling for sex, age, and axial length. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed. A consecutive sample of 603 volunteers (403 women, 200 men) aged 59.1 ± 18.8 years was recruited. The standardized Lens Opacification Classification System (LOCS)-III was used to classify eyes (randomly selected) into cataractous and non-cataractous groups. Also, they were classified according to the cataract location (presence or absence of cortical, nuclear, or posterior subcapsular cataract). Optical biometry was performed to measure LT, ACS, NT, and PCS. Propensity score was used to match participants one-to-one for sex, age, and axial length. Groups were compared using the Student's t test or Yuen's test. Results: The four classifications divided unmatched eyes into: 361 cataractous lenses and 242 non-cataractous, 226 cortical and 377 non-cortical cataractous, 313 nuclear and 290 non-nuclear cataractous and 242 subcapsular and 361 non-subcapsular cataractous. Before matching, cataractous eyes showed significantly higher LT (4.52 ± 0.39 vs. 3.94 ± 0.46 mm, p < 0.001), ACS (0.75 ± 0.20 vs. 0.58 ± 0.23 mm, p < 0.001), NT (3.34 ± 0.23 vs. 3.18 ± 0.25 mm, p < 0.001) and PCS (0.42 ± 0.19 vs. 0.37 ± 0.19 mm, p = 0.003). Matched lens, cortical, nuclear, and subcapsular cataract samples comprised 146, 258, 182, and 226 eyes, respectively. After matching, no significant differences were observed in LT (4.34 ± 0.37 vs. 4.33 ± 0.36 mm, p = 0.94), ACS (0.72 ± 0.20 vs. 0.76 ± 0.19 mm, p = 0.08), NT (3.31 ± 0.22 vs. 3.30 ± 0.23 mm, p = 0.24) and PCS (0.42 ± 0.19 vs. 0.43 ± 0.16 mm, p = 0.79). Conclusions: The presence of senile cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataract have no effect on LT, ACS, NT, and PCS. The current systematic review sought to identify quantitative empirical studies that focused on the transdiagnostic factors of intolerance of uncertainty, emotional dysregulation and rumination, and their relation with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The overall research aim was to examine the relationship between these transdiagnostic factors and their relation with depression and PTSD symptoms. The systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Out of the 768 articles initially identified, 55 met the inclusion criteria for the current review. The results determined that intolerance of uncertainty is indirectly related to depression and PTSD symptoms, mainly through other factors including emotion dysregulation and rumination. Additionally, emotional dysregulation is a significant predictor of both depression and PTSD symptoms. Rumination is a robust factor related to depression and PTSD symptoms, this relationship was significant in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. This review provides evidence on the transdiagnostic factors of intolerance of uncertainty, emotional dysregulation and rumination in the relationship with depression and PTSD symptoms. We evaluate the actions of other individuals based upon a variety of movements that reveal critical information to guide decision making and behavioural responses. These signals convey a range of information about the actor, including their goals, intentions and internal mental states. Although progress has been made to identify cortical regions involved in action processing, the organising principles underlying our representation of actions still remains unclear. In this paper we investigated the conceptual space that underlies action perception by assessing which qualities are fundamental to the perception of human actions. We recorded 240 different actions using motion-capture and used these data to animate a volumetric avatar that performed the different actions. 230 participants then viewed these actions and rated the extent to which each action demonstrated 23 different action characteristics (e.g., avoiding-approaching, pulling-pushing, weak-powerful). We analysed these data using Exploratory Factor Analysis to examine the latent factors underlying visual action perception. The best fitting model was a four-dimensional model with oblique rotation. We named the factors: friendly-unfriendly, formidable-feeble, planned-unplanned, and abduction-adduction. The first two factors of friendliness and formidableness explained approximately 22% of the variance each, compared to planned and abduction, which explained approximately 7–8% of the variance each; as such we interpret this representation of action space as having 2 + 2 dimensions. A closer examination of the first two factors suggests a similarity to the principal factors underlying our evaluation of facial traits and emotions, whilst the last two factors of planning and abduction appear unique to actions. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) functions as a second messenger to signal metabolic distress through highly compartmentalized production in mitochondria. The dynamics of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and diffusion between mitochondrial compartments and into the cytosol govern oxidative stress responses and pathology, though these processes remain poorly understood. Here, we couple the H2O2 biosensor, HyPer7, with optogenetic stimulation of the ROS-generating protein KillerRed targeted into multiple mitochondrial microdomains. Single mitochondrial photogeneration of H2O2 demonstrates the spatiotemporal dynamics of ROS diffusion and transient hyperfusion of mitochondria due to ROS. This transient hyperfusion phenotype required mitochondrial fusion but not fission machinery. Measurement of microdomain-specific H2O2 diffusion kinetics reveals directionally selective diffusion through mitochondrial microdomains. All-optical generation and detection of physiologically-relevant concentrations of H2O2 between mitochondrial compartments provide a map of mitochondrial H2O2 diffusion dynamics in situ as a framework to understand the role of ROS in health and disease. We mainly give a numerical condition to ensure the finite generation of the effective monoids of some smooth projective rational surfaces. These surfaces are constructed from the blow-up of any fixed Hirzebruch surface at some special configurations of ordinary points. Under this numerical condition, we determine explicitly the list of all (- 1) and (- 2) -curves. In particular, we complete a result obtained by Harbourne (Duke Math J 52(1):129–148, 1985) and another result obtained by the third author (C R Math 338(11):873–878, 2004). Purpose: To evaluate the effect of EVO+ Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation on the iridocorneal angle pigmentation and structures. Methods: Myopic refractive surgery candidates who underwent posterior chamber EVO+ ICL implantation were evaluated preoperatively and 3 and 6 months postoperatively. High-resolution images of the iridocorneal angle (nasal, superior, temporal and inferior quadrants) were acquired during gonioscopy. A masked observer, blinded to study visits and patients' information, evaluated the angle width, apparent iris root insertion, iris configuration, and trabecular meshwork pigmentation according to the Spaeth scale in two different occasions. The intra-rater reliability was estimated using the weighted Gwet's Agreement Coefficient (AC2). Differences between visits were analyzed using the Cochran Q test or the Friedman test. Results: Twenty-one patients (13 females and 8 males) aging 31.3 ± 6.3 years old were recruited. The intra-rater reliability of gonioscopy assessment was excellent for every parameter assessed (AC2 ≥ 0.97). No significant differences were found among the study visits for any quadrant in the angle width (p ≥ 0.74), apparent iris root insertion (p ≥ 0.22), iris configuration (p ≥ 0.21) and trabecular meshwork pigmentation (p ≥ 0.24). Mean pigmentation of trabecular meshwork for the four quadrants did not vary either among visits (p = 0.25). Conclusions: The EVO+ ICL implantation after uneventful procedures appears not to clinically affect the iridocorneal angle pigmentation and/or structures during a short-medium follow-up using gonioscopy assessment. Biodegradable materials based on poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and a phenolic free modified rosin resin were obtained and studied to control the biodegradability under composting conditions of the materials. The resin was blended in concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 parts per hundred (phr) of base polymer using industrial plastic processing techniques. Additionally, to study the effect of the resin on the compatibility of the PLA, the physical performance, water absorption, mechanical behavior, thermal stability, and microstructure of the materials were assessed. The resin incorporation decreased the resistance to thermal degradation of the resultant material, and the composting disintegration rate was slowed down with the increasing content of the resin. The water diffusion was delayed, and the diffusion and corrected diffusion coefficients decreased with the rising content of UP. The mechanical properties tend to decrease while a saturation effect was observed for contents higher than 3 phr of resin. The optimal amount of resin that can be added to achieve good interaction with PLA matrix, complete miscibility, and good material cohesion is 3 phr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gum rosin esters are some of the most common gum rosin derivatives used in different applications, such as coatings, paper, varnishes, chewing gum, and food industries. In this study, gum rosin esters are used as additives for polylactic acid (PLA) to improve its processability and thermal stability. Blends of an amorphous PLA with two different gum rosin esters, pentaerythritol ester and glycerol ester, were prepared by melt extrusion process in concentrations from 1, 3, and 5 phr. Besides the comparison of thermal degradation, microstructure assessment, and melt flow index (MFI) analysis, the processability performance during testing samples production by injection molding process was evaluated. Experimental results showed that MFI values of PLA-gum rosin ester blends increased by 100%, 147%, and 164%, along with increasing content of gum rosin esters addition, in both cases. Also, both derivatives slightly improved PLA thermal stability (around 3ºC higher). Injection molding temperature decreased by at least 20 °C for PLA-gum rosin ester blends compared with neat PLA. Furthermore, the maximum tensile strength of PLA-gum rosin esters was negligibly affected in formulations with low content of gum rosin esters, and the FESEM images revealed a good dispersion and compatibility of gum rosin ester particles into PLA matrix in both concentrations. Research on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy has been sparse among Latino/a immigrants, a population at high risk for infection. This exploratory study examines rates of vaccine acceptance and its association with psychological antecedents of vaccination among Latino/a immigrants. A cross-sectional telephone survey on perceptions of COVID-19 was administered between October 2020 to February 2021 in South Florida to 200 adult Latino/a immigrants. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and logistic regression were employed to determine the influence of independent variables on vaccine acceptance. Most participants indicated a willingness to get vaccinated. Participants with higher confidence (aOR = 10.2, 95% CI: 4.8–21.8) and collective responsibility scores were (aOR = 3.1, 95%CI:1.3–6.9) more likely to report vaccine acceptance than those with lower scores. No other psychological antecedents or demographic variables were significantly associated with vaccine acceptance. Study results provide insights into motivating factors for vaccination that can inform culturally tailored education campaigns to increase vaccine acceptability in this population. Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children. The causative pathogens show geographic and seasonal variations. We retrospectively evaluated the frequency and seasonality of respiratory pathogens in children and adolescents (age: 0–19 years) with ARIs treated between January 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022, at a single center in Mexico. Out of 2400 patients, 1,603 were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection and 797 were diagnosed with other common respiratory pathogens (CRPs). Of the 797 patients, 632 were infected with one CRP and 165 with > 2 CRPs. Deaths occurred only in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients. Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, respiratory syncytial virus B, and parainfluenza virus 3 were the most prevalent in cases with single and multiple infections. CRP showed a high frequency between autumn and winter of 2021, with higher incidence of hospitalization compared to COVID-19. The main comorbidities were immunosuppression, cardiovascular disease (CD), and asthma. The frequency of CRPs showed a downward trend throughout the first half of 2021. CRPs increased in single- and co-infection cases between the fourth and fifth waves of COVID-19, probably due to decreased nonpharmaceutical interventions and changes in diagnostic tests. Purpose: To assess the relationship between anterior chamber depth (ACD) and lens thickness (LT), as well as its three main components (anterior and posterior cortex and nucleus thickness), in cataractous and non-cataractous eyes, depending on the axial length (AxL). Methods: Anterior and posterior cortex and nucleus thickness of the crystalline lens, ACD, and AxL were measured using optical low-coherence reflectometry in cataractous and non-cataractous eyes. They were also classified into hyperopia, emmetropia, myopia, and high myopia, depending on AxL; thus, eight subgroups were created. A minimum sample size of 44 eyes (of 44 patients) for each group was recruited. Linear models were fitted for the whole sample and each AxL subgroup to assess if there were differences in the relationships between the crystalline lens variables and ACD, including age as a covariate. Results: Three hundred seventy cataract patients (237 females, 133 males) and 250 non-cataract controls (180 females, 70 males), aged 70.5 ± 9.4 and 41.9 ± 15.5 years, respectively, were recruited. The mean AxL, ACD, and LT for the cataractous and non-cataractous eyes were 23.90 ± 2.05, 24.11 ± 2.11, 2.64 ± 0.45, and 2.91 ± 0.49, 4.51 ± 0.38, 3.93 ± 0.44 mm, respectively. The inverse relationship of LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus thickness with ACD was not significantly (p ≥ 0.26) different between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes. Further subclassification of the sample depending on AxL showed that the inverse relationship between the posterior cortex and ACD was no longer significant (p > 0.05) for any non-cataractous AxL group. LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus thickness was not significantly (p ≥ 0.43) different between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes for the whole sample, and all AxL groups after adjusting for age. Conclusions: The presence of cataracts does not modify the inverse relationship of the LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus with ACD. And this relationship does not seem to depend importantly on AxL. Besides, the possible differences in LT, anterior and posterior cortex, and nucleus between cataractous and non-cataractous eyes may not be caused by lens opacification, but possibly by the progressive lens growth due to aging. Background: Few works have analyzed factors associated with urine output in ADPKD patients taking tolvaptan (TVP). Methods: We selected 24-h urine samples from ADPKD patients treated with TVP. Urine osmolality/creatinine ratio was used as estimator of urinary osmolar load. Results: We included 127 urine samples from 61 patients. After TVP, urine output doubled with a parallel reduction in urine solute concentration. However, when expressed as urine solute/creatinine ratios, no significant changes were observed. Daily osmolar load and osmolality/creatinine ratio did not change significantly. Before TVP, urine output was positively correlated with body weight and urine osmolality/creatinine ratio and negatively with eGFR, urine morning osmolality, and 24-h urine-calculated osmolality. After TVP, urine output was positively correlated with body weight, eGFR and negatively with age. There was a poor correlation with urine-calculated osmolality. We constructed a predictor model using mixed-effects modeling and we found that urine output was related to lower age, higher body weight, higher eGFR, and greater doses of TVP. When body weight was removed, urine output was also related to male sex and a higher daily osmolar excretion. Equation of prediction was: Urine output (mL/day) = 2771–52.9 × Age (years) + 58.4 × Weight (kg) + 18.7 × eGFR (mL/min) + 870 (if TVP = 90/30 mg) + 517 (if TVP = 60/30 mg). Conclusion: Patients taking TVP will undergo an increase about twice in urine production from baseline. Greater doses of TVP cause a progressive increase in urine production. The splitting of words into stressed and unstressed syllables is the foundation for the scansion of poetry, a process that aims at determining the metrical pattern of a line of verse within a poem. Intricate language rules and their exceptions, as well as poetic licenses exerted by the authors, make calculating these patterns a nontrivial task. Some rhetorical devices shrink the metrical length, while others might extend it. This opens the door for interpretation and further complicates the creation of automated scansion algorithms useful for automatically analyzing corpora on a distant reading fashion. In this paper, we compare the automated metrical pattern identification systems available for Spanish, English, and German, against fine-tuned monolingual and multilingual language models trained on the same task. Despite being initially conceived as models suitable for semantic tasks, our results suggest that transformers-based models retain enough structural information to perform reasonably well for Spanish on a monolingual setting, and outperforms both for English and German when using a model trained on the three languages, showing evidence of the benefits of cross-lingual transfer between the languages.
