We studied the total polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamin C, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of six Citrus monofloral honey, and the in vitro inhibitory effect against cholinesterases and tyrosinase. Finally, we assessed their effect against the biofilm of some pathogenic bacteria. Lime honey showed the best antioxidant activity and the highest content of polyphenols and vitamin C. Lemon and tangerine honey contained almost exclusively flavonoids. Lemon honey better preserved the bovine serum albumin against denaturation (IC50 = 48.47 mg). Honeys inhibited acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, and tyrosinase up to 12.04% (tangerine), 19.11% (bergamot), and 94.1% (lemon), respectively. Lime and clementine honey better inhibited the Listeria monocytogenes biofilm. Bergamot honey acted mainly against the Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii biofilm; bergamot and tangerine honey inhibited the Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm particularly. Bergamot, clementine, and tangerine honey acted against Escherichia coli sessile cell metabolism. Oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is mainly cultivated, both as fresh and dried herb, for several purposes, such as ailments, drugs, and spices. To evaluate the influence of some drying methods on the chemical composition of the essential oil of oregano, its aerial parts were dehydrated by convective drying techniques (shade, static oven), microwave-assisted heating (three different treatments) and osmotic treatment. The oils were analyzed by GC-FID and GC–MS. The highest essential oil yield was achieved from microwave and shade drying methods. In total, 39 components were found, with carvacrol (ranging from 56.2 to 81.4%) being the main constituent; other compounds present in lower amounts were p-cymene (1.6–17.7%), γ-terpinene (0.8–14.2%), α-pinene (0.1–2.1%), thymol methyl ether (0.4–1.8%) and thimoquinone (0.5–3.5%). The essential oil yields varied among the different treatments as well as the relative compositions. The percentages of p-cymene, γ-terpinene and α-pinene decreased significantly in the dried sample compared with the fresh sample; on the other hand, carvacrol, isoborneol and linalool increased significantly in the dried materials. The choice of the drying method for obtaining the essential oil therefore appears crucial not only in relation to the higher yield but also and above all in reference to the percentage presence of components that can direct the essential oil toward an appropriate use. Background: Septate uterus is a common Mullerian ducts anomaly. The aim of our pilot study was the evaluation of diode laser hysteroscopic metroplasty efficacy to increase endometrial volume in women with septate uterus. Results: We prospectively enrolled 10 consecutive patients with septate uterus undergoing office hysteroscopic metroplasty with diode laser between February and November 2019. Endometrial volume was evaluated before and 3 months after surgery using 3D transvaginal ultrasound. The surgical procedure was uncomplicated in all patients, the endometrial volume increased at 3 months follow-up (the median increase was 1.9 cm3 (range 1.7–2.1), and there was a complete removal of septum with no intrauterine synechiae at follow-up hysteroscopy. Conclusions: Office hysteroscopic metroplasty with diode laser is a safe procedure and has preliminary showed to increase endometrial volume. The increase in endometrial volume by 3D-TV US could be used as a prognostic factor for the reproductive outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of natural products to control several phytopathogens is now gaining a great interest because of the environmental risks deriving from the use of synthetic drugs in controlling pathogens. Salvia hispanica L., commonly known as chia, is a traditional food in Central and Southern America. The current research is focusing on the chemical characterization of the essential oil extracted from the aerial parts of chia plant (stem and leaves) using GC-MS analysis, evaluating its antimicrobial effects. The essential oil is constituted mainly of sesquiterpenes, with caryophyllenes as main constituents. The chemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of Carum copticum essential oil and its methanolic extract were investigated. Thirteen compounds were identified representing 99.3% of the total oil composition. Oxygenated monoterpenes (53.0%) dominated the C. copticum essential oil with high contents of thymol (51.7 ± 1.51%), p-cymene (26.9 ± 1.11%), γ-terpinene (16.7 ± 0.76%), and β-pinene (1.6 ± 0.15%). In the methanolic extract, the caffeic, gallic, chlorogenic, coumaric and ferulic acids, flavan-3-ols (catechin), flavone (hyperoside), and the flavonol quercetin were identified. Antimicrobial activity of essential oil and the organic extract was tested by disk diffusion and broth microdilution method. The essential oil was effective against the tested bacteria and yeast strains with the highest activity and the MICs and MBCs values were lower as compared to the methanolic extract. The essential oil showed anti-quorum sensing activity against Chromobacterium violaceum, and the IC50 value for violacein inhibition was 0.23 mg/ml. Both the essential oil and the methanolic extract also showed antioxidant activities. The results obtained highlight the potential use of C. copticum as a possible source of antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds to be used both as food flavor and as a broad spectrum antibiotic. Citral, 3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal, is a key component of the essential oils extracted from several lemon-scented herbal plants. It has been demonstrated to be an effective antifungal agent and in recent years, to have antiproliferative effect in certain tumor cell lines: thus citral could be a potential anticancer drug. In this study, we investigated the effect of citral on the proliferation of pancreatic cell tumor lines (MIA PaCa-2 cells) and human B-lymphoma (DeFew cells). To analyze which part of the molecule is pivotal for the activity, we also studied the effect of several citral related compounds, in particular focusing on some chemical aspects of the terpenic scaffold. This paper reports the use of Brugmansia species (Solanaceae) in traditional practices of shamans (curanderos) of Northern Peruvian Andes. The field study permitted the classification of a number of species and/or their hybrids used for both curative and psychotropic activities. There is evidence of a folk systematics in this genus that constitutes a very important phenomenon for its therapeutic-divinatory, phytotherapeutical, and ritual (in initiation and black magic rites) uses.
