The article presents a study related to inadequate immunization against tetanus which is a recognized problem in geriatric populations. A total of 104 patients admitted to the geriatric ward underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment. Only 49% of the elderly subjects in this study exhibited a protective level of antibodies against tetanus in plasma. This is similar to the situation encountered in North America and other European countries, but it differs from reports from Switzerland, where one study found that 92.5% of the subjects older than 65 years possessed protective antibody concentrations. The findings indicate the prevalence of efficient tetanus immunization among the elderly, as evaluated in hospitalized geriatric patients, remains very low.
