We use individual-level census data for England and Wales for the period 1851-1911 to investigate the interplay between social class and geographical context determining patterns of childbearing during the fertility transition. We also consider the effect of spatial mobility or lifetime migration on individual fertility behavior in the early phases of demographic modernization. Prior research on the fertility transition in England and Wales has demonstrated substantial variation in fertility levels and declines by different social groups; however, these findings were generally reported at a broad geographical level, disguising local variation and complicated by residential segregation along social class and occupational lines. Our findings confirm a clear pattern of widening social class differences in recent net fertility, providing strong support for the argument that belonging to a certain social group was an important determinant of early adoption of new reproductive behavior in marriage in England and Wales. However, a relatively constant effect of lower net fertility among long-distance migrants both before the transition and in the early phases of declining fertility indicates that life course migration patterns were most likely factor in explaining the differences in fertility operating through postponement of marriage and childbearing. The present study examines exposure to adversity as a predictor of psychological distress and risk behavior among 266 elementary students in 14 low income neighborhood schools in Chicago. Two indices of adversity exposure were created, reflecting neighborhood, school, and peer group risk (NSP) and the lack of protective resources within the family and neighborhood (LPR). Regression analyses investigated these indices as independent and potentially interacting predictors of self-reported symptoms of depression and anxiety, frequency of substance use, and involvement in violence-related behavior. The LPR index was found to be a linear predictor of greater reported anxiety and exhibited a significant curvilinear association with reports of depression, substance use, and violence-related behavior. Similarly, the NSP index was a linear predictor of greater reported levels of substance use and violence-related behavior. Significant interaction between the two indices was found. There is considerable research that suggests that school-based social-emotional programs can foster improved mental health and reduce problem behaviors for participating youth; in contrast, much less is known about the impact of these programs on physical health, even though some of these programs also include at least limited direct attention to promoting physical health behaviors. We examined the effects of one such program, Positive Action (PA), on physical health behaviors and body mass index (BMI), and tested for mediation of program effects through a measure of social-emotional and character development (SECD). Participating schools in the matched-pair, cluster-randomized trial were 14 low-performing K-8 Chicago Public Schools. We followed a cohort of students in each school from grades 3 to 8 (eight waves of data collection; 1170 total students). Student self-reports of health behaviors served as the basis for measures of healthy eating and exercise, unhealthy eating, personal hygiene, consistent bedtime, and SECD. We collected height and weight measurements at endpoint to calculate age- and gender-adjusted BMI z-scores. Longitudinal multilevel modeling analyses revealed evidence of favorable program effects on personal hygiene [effect size (ES) = 0.48], healthy eating and exercise (ES = 0.21), and unhealthy eating (ES = -0.19); in addition, BMI z-scores were lower among students in PA schools at endpoint (ES = -0.21). Program effects were not moderated by either gender or student mobility. Longitudinal structural equation modeling demonstrated mediation through SECD for healthy eating and exercise, unhealthy eating, and personal hygiene. Findings suggest that a SECD program without a primary focus on health behavior promotion can have a modest impact on outcomes in this domain during the childhood to adolescence transition. We present results from a study of baryon spectral properties within a relativistic constituent-quark model. In particular, we demonstrate the performance of a universal quark model for all light-, strange-, and heavy-flavor baryons with regard to their spectroscopy. Thereby we produce insights into the effective interaction between constituent quarks of the various flavors up, down, strange, charm, and bottom. The relativistically invariant mass spectra are obtained by two different methods for calculating the microscopic three-quark systems: a stochastic variational method, solving the eigenvalue problem of the invariant mass operator expressed by differential equations, and a Faddeev integral-equation method, adapted to treating long-range interactions, such as the quark confinement. The corresponding results agree very well, generally within a few percents. Taking into account relativistic effects through Poincaré invariance of the mass operator, or equivalently of the Hamiltonian, turns out to be of utmost importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of a school-based social-emotional and character development program, Positive Action, on the developmental trajectory of social-emotional and character-related behaviors was evaluated using data from three school-based randomized trials in elementary schools. Results come from 1) 4 years of data from students in 20 Hawai'i schools, 2) 3 years of data from students in 14 schools in Chicago and 3) 3 years of data from students in 8 schools in a southeastern state. Random intercept, multilevel, growth-curve analyses showed that students in both control and Positive Action schools exhibited a general decline in the number of positive behaviors associated with social-emotional and character development that were endorsed. However, the Positive Action intervention significantly reduced these declines in all three trials. Taken together, these analyses 1) give insight into the normative trajectory of behaviors associated with social-emotional and character development and 2) provide evidence for the effectiveness of Positive Action in helping children maintain a relatively beneficial developmental trajectory. Array-based mutation detection methodology typically relies on direct hybridization of the fluorescently labeled query sequence to surface-bound oligonucleotide probes. These probes contain either small sequence variations or perfect-match sequence. The intensity of fluorescence bound to each oligonucleotide probe is intended to reveal which sequence is perfectly complementary to the query sequence. However, these approaches have not always been successful, especially for detection of small frameshift mutations. Here we describe a multiplex assay to detect small insertions and deletions by using a modified PCR to evenly amplify each amplicon (PCR/PCR), followed by ligase detection reaction (LDR). Mutations were identified by screening reaction products with a universal DNA microarray, which uncouples mutation detection from array hybridization and provides for high sensitivity. Using the three BRCA1 and BRCA2 founder mutations in the Ashkenazi Jewish population (BRCA1 185delAG; BRCA1 5382insC; BRCA2 6174delT) as a model system, the assay readily detected these mutations in multiplexed reactions. Our results demonstrate that universal microarray analysis of PCR/PCR/LDR products permits rapid identification of small insertion and deletion mutations in the context of both clinical diagnosis and population studies. Point mutations in codons 12, 13, and 61 of the K-ras gene occur early in the development of colorectal cancer and are preserved throughout the course of tumor progression. These mutations can serve as biomarkers for shed or circulating tumor cells and may be useful for diagnosis of early, curable tumors and for staging of advanced cancers. We have developed a multiplex polymerase chain reaction/ligase detection reaction (PCR/LDR) method which identifies all 19 possible single-base mutations in K-ras codons 12, 13, and 61, with a sensitivity of 1 in 500 wild-type sequences. In a blinded study, 144 paraffin-embedded archival colon carcinomas were microdissected and K-ras mutations determined by both dideoxy-sequencing and multiplex PCR/LDR. Results were concordant for 134 samples. The ten discordant samples were re-evaluated using higher sensitivity uniplex PCR/LDR, and the original multiplex PCR/LDR result was confirmed in nine of these ten cases. Multiplex PCR/LDR was able to identify mutations in solid tumors or paraffin-embedded tissues containing a majority of wild-type stromal cells, with or without microdissection.
