A rich and complex temporal structure of variability in postural sway characterizes healthy and adaptable postural control. However, neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, which often manifest as tremors, rigidity, and bradykinesia, disrupt this healthy variability. This study examined postural sway in young and older adults, including individuals with Parkinson's disease, under different upright standing conditions to investigate the potential connection between the temporal structure of variability in postural sway and Parkinsonism. A novel and innovative method called oriented fractal scaling component analysis was employed. This method involves decomposing the two-dimensional center of pressure (CoP) planar trajectories to pinpoint the directions associated with minimal and maximal temporal correlations in postural sway. As a result, it facilitates a comprehensive assessment of the directional characteristics within the temporal structure of sway variability. The results demonstrated that healthy young adults control posture along two orthogonal directions closely aligned with the traditional anatomical anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) axes. In contrast, older adults and individuals with Parkinson's disease controlled posture along suborthogonal directions that significantly deviate from the AP and ML axes. These findings suggest that the altered temporal structure of sway variability is evident in individuals with Parkinson's disease and underlies postural deficits, surpassing what can be explained solely by the natural aging process. Any reliable biomarker has to be specific, generalizable, and reproducible across individuals and contexts. The exact values of such a biomarker must represent similar health states in different individuals and at different times within the same individual to result in the minimum possible false-positive and false-negative rates. The application of standard cut-off points and risk scores across populations hinges upon the assumption of such generalizability. Such generalizability, in turn, hinges upon this condition that the phenomenon investigated by current statistical methods is ergodic, i.e., its statistical measures converge over individuals and time within the finite limit of observations. However, emerging evidence indicates that biological processes abound with nonergodicity, threatening this generalizability. Here, we present a solution for how to make generalizable inferences by deriving ergodic descriptions of nonergodic phenomena. For this aim, we proposed capturing the origin of ergodicity-breaking in many biological processes: cascade dynamics. To assess our hypotheses, we embraced the challenge of identifying reliable biomarkers for heart disease and stroke, which, despite being the leading cause of death worldwide and decades of research, lacks reliable biomarkers and risk stratification tools. We showed that raw R-R interval data and its common descriptors based on mean and variance are nonergodic and non-specific. On the other hand, the cascade-dynamical descriptors, the Hurst exponent encoding linear temporal correlations, and multifractal nonlinearity encoding nonlinear interactions across scales described the nonergodic heart rate variability more ergodically and were specific. The creativity and emergence of biological and psychological behavior tend to be nonlinear, and correspondingly, biological and psychological measures contain degrees of irregularity. The linear model might fail to reduce these measurements to a sum of independent random factors (yielding a stable mean for the measurement), implying nonlinear changes over time. The present work reviews some of the concepts implicated in nonlinear changes over time and details the mathematical steps involved in their identification. It introduces multifractality as a mathematical framework helpful in determining whether and to what degree the measured series exhibits nonlinear changes over time. These mathematical steps include multifractal analysis and surrogate data production for resolving when multifractality entails nonlinear changes over time. Ultimately, when measurements fail to fit the structures of the traditional linear model, multifractal modeling allows for making those nonlinear excursions explicit, that is, to come up with a quantitative estimate of how strongly events may interact across timescales. This estimate may serve some interests as merely a potentially statistically significant indicator of independence failing to hold, but we suspect that this estimate might serve more generally as a predictor of perceptuomotor or cognitive performance. Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced Acute Liver Failure (ALF) is recognized as the most common cause of ALF in Western societies. APAP-induced ALF is characterized by coagulopathy, hepatic encephalopathy, multi-organ failure, and death. MicroRNAs are small, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) is dynamically expressed in the liver and is involved in the pathophysiology of both acute and chronic liver injury models. We hypothesize that miR-21genetic ablation attenuates hepatotoxicity following acetaminophen intoxication. Eight-week old miR-21knockout (miR21KO) or wild-type (WT) C57BL/6N male mice were injected with acetaminophen (APAP, 300 mg/kg BW) or saline. Mice were sacrificed 6 or 24 h post-injection. MiR21KO mice presented attenuation of liver enzymes ALT, AST, LDH compared with WT mice 24 h post-APAP treatment. Moreover, miR21KO mice had decreased hepatic DNA fragmentation and necrosis than WT mice after 24 h of APAP treatment. APAP-treated miR21KO mice showed increased levels of cell cycle regulators CYCLIN D1 and PCNA, increased autophagy markers expression (Map1LC3a, Sqstm1) and protein (LC3AB II/I, p62), and an attenuation of the APAP-induced hypofibrinolytic state via (PAI-1) compared with WT mice 24 post-APAP treatment. MiR-21 inhibition could be a novel therapeutic approach to mitigate APAP-induced hepatotoxicity and enhance survival during the regenerative phase, particularly to alter regeneration, autophagy, and fibrinolysis. Most fungal infections are common, localized to skin or mucosal surfaces and can be treated effectively with topical antifungal agents. However, while invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are uncommon, they are very difficult to control medically, and are associated with high mortality rates. We have previously described highly potent bis-guanidine-containing heteroaryl-linked antifungal agents, and were interested in expanding the range of agents to novel series so as to reduce the degree of aromaticity (with a view to making the compounds more drug-like), and provide broadly active high potency derivatives. We have investigated the replacement of the central aryl ring from our original series by both amide and a bis-amide moieties, and have found particular structure-activity relationships (SAR) for both series', resulting in highly active antifungal agents against both mold and yeast pathogens. In particular, we describe the in vitro antifungal activity, absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination (ADME) properties, and off-target properties of FC12406 (34), which was selected as a pre-clinical development candidate. Introduction: In laboratory medicine, reference intervals (RIs) are key decision support tools used to guide the clinical interpretation of numerical test results. Best practice suggests each laboratory establishes RIs in the local population prior to introducing an assay into routine clinical practice. Aim: The aim of this study was to define RIs for frequently requested biochemical/haematological parameters in a healthy adult Irish Caucasian population. Methods: A cross-sectional study of non-pregnant apparently healthy volunteers was conducted. Baseline demographics, anthropometric and laboratory measurements were recorded. In total, 37 commonly requested biochemical (serum, n = 26) and haematological (venous blood, n = 11) ISO15189:2012 accredited tests were analysed, using the Roche Cobas® Sebia Capillarys 3 Tera and Siemens Advia® 2120i platforms following standard operating procedures. RIs were defined according to the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC) recommended method. Results: Of 208 apparently healthy volunteers, 76 failed to meet the study inclusion criteria. The reference population comprised of 132 participants (males: n = 65, 49.2%) with a median age of 29.7 (18.1–62.2) years. RIs for the majority of biochemical/haematological parameters were broadly in accord with those provided by Pathology Harmony (UK)/Irish RI Harmonisation Project and the manufacturer Roche Diagnostics. However, the established RI defined for HbA1c: 27–37 mmol/mol was markedly different from that quoted nationally, HbA1c: 20–42 mmol/mol. Conclusion: Normative biological intervals established in a healthy adult Irish population for 37 commonly requested biochemical/haematological parameters will be a valuable aid to result interpretation in clinical laboratories after appropriate verification in accordance with ISO 15189: 2012. Pseudechinus magellanicus is one of the most abundant sea urchins in southern South America, but many aspects of its feeding ecology in nearshore environments remain unknown. Here, we aimed to analyze the variability of the diet composition along a coastal depth gradient from intertidal tidepools to upper circalittoral zones and examine the relation between seaweed availability and the diet composition at intertidal tidepools. A total of 118 food items, including seaweeds and animal components, were identified. The diet composition showed a large variation between the different coastal habitats present along the depth gradient studied. In tidepools, articulate coralline seaweeds (Corallina spp.), mussel shell fragments and small crustaceans were frequent in the gut contents, suggesting that this species behaves like a general omnivore but can also act as a mussel bioeroder when consuming epizoic algae and microeuendolithic organisms. In intertidal tidepools, the species showed a negative preference toward typical species of late successional stages such as Dictyota dichotoma, Adenocystis utricularis, Codium fragile and Chondria macrocarpa. Sea urchins from kelp forests showed higher dietary diversity than those from intertidal and deeper subtidal habitats, but with prevalence of kelps. At upper circalittoral soft bottoms, diverse detrital items as benthic diatoms, cyanobacteria and drifted algae were observed in gut contents, usually associated with fine sediments, indicating that P. magellanicus captures drifted algae and behaves like a biofilm feeder. This trophic plasticity may allow this species to occupy contrasting habitats and may also contribute to explain its wide distribution in southern South America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When humans handle a tool, such as a tennis racket or hammer, for the first time, they often wield it to determine its inertial properties. The mechanisms that contribute to perception of inertial properties are not fully understood. The present study's goal was to investigate how proprioceptive afferents contribute to effortful perception of heaviness and length of a manually wielded object in the absence of vision. Blindfolded participants manually wielded specially designed objects with different mass, the static moment, and the moment of inertia at different wrist angles and angular kinematics. These manipulations elicited different tonic and rhythmic activity levels in the muscle spindles of the wrist, allowing us to relate differences in muscle activity to perceptual judgments of heaviness and length. Perception of heaviness and length depended on an object's static moment and the moment of inertia, respectively. Manipulations of wrist angle and angular kinematics affected perceived heaviness and length in distinct ways. Ulnar deviation resulted in an object being perceived heavier but shorter. Compared to static holding, wielding the object resulted in it being perceived heavier but wielding did not affect perceived length. These results suggest that proprioceptive afferents differentially contribute to effortful perception of object heaviness and length. Critically, the role of afferent is specific to the mechanical variable used to derive a given object property. The applied muscular effort to wield, hold, or balance an object shapes the medium by which action-relevant perceptual judgments (e.g., heaviness, length, width, and shape) are derived. Strikingly, the integrity of these judgments is retained over a range of exploratory conditions, a phenomenon known as perceptual invariance. For instance, judgments of length do not vary with the speed of rotation, despite the greater muscular effort required to wield objects at higher speeds. If not the amount of muscular effort alone, then what features of the neuromuscular activity implicated while wielding objects contribute to perception via dynamic touch? In the present study, we investigated how muscular activity mediates perception of heaviness and length of objects via dynamic touch. We measured EMG activity in biceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis as participants wielded objects of different moments of inertia. We found that variation in the amount of muscular effort (literally, root-mean-square values of EMG activity) predicted variations in judgments of heaviness but not length. In contrast, fluctuations in the activity of biceps brachii and flexor carpi radialis were fractal, and variation in the degree of fractality in the two muscles predicted variation in judgments of length. These findings reflect the distinct implications of dynamic touch for perception of heaviness and length. Perceptions of length can be derived from minimal effort, and muscular effort only shapes the medium from which judgments of length are derived. We discuss our findings in the context of the body as a multifractal tensegrity system, wherein perceptual judgments of length by wielding implicate, at least in part, rapidly diffusing mechanotransduction perturbations cascading across the whole body. There is much uncertainty as to how fungal disease is diagnosed and characterized in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). A 19-question anonymous electronic questionnaire was developed and distributed to ascertain current practice in clinical microbiology laboratories providing a fungal laboratory service to CF centres in the UK. Analyses of responses identified the following: (1) current UK laboratory practice, in general, follows the current guidelines, but the scope and diversity of what is currently being delivered by laboratories far exceeds what is detailed in the guidelines; (2) there is a lack of standardization of fungal tests amongst laboratories, outside of the current guidelines; (3) both the UK CF Trust Laboratory Standards for Processing Microbiological Samples from People with Cystic Fibrosis and the US Cumulative Techniques and Procedures in Clinical Microbiology (Cumitech) Guidelines 43 Cystic Fibrosis Microbiology need to be updated to reflect both new methodological innovations, as well as better knowledge of fungal disease pathophysiology in CF; (4) there is a need for clinical medicine to decide upon a stratification strategy for the provision of new fungal assays that will add value to the physician in the optimal management of CF patients; (5) there is also a need to rationale what assays should be performed at local laboratory level and those which are best served at National Mycology Reference Laboratory level; and (6) further research is required in developing laboratory assays, which will help ascertain the clinical importance of ‘old’ fungal pathogens, as well as ‘emerging’ fungal pathogens. The dominant assumption about the causal architecture of the mind is, that it is composed of a stable set of components that contribute independently to relevant observables that are employed to measure cognitive activity. This view has been called component-dominant dynamics. An alternative has been proposed, according to which the different components are not independent, but fundamentally interdependent, and are not stable basic properties of the mind, but rather an emergent feature of the mind given a particular task context. This view has been called interaction-dominant dynamics. In this paper, we review evidence for interaction-dominant dynamics as the causal architecture of the mind. We point out, that such an architecture is consistent with problems of convergence in research on the level of results and theorizing. Moreover, we point out that if interaction-dominant dynamics as the causal architecture of the mind were to be true, this would naturally lead to (some degree of) problems with generalization and replicability in sciences of the mind and brain, and would probably warrant changes in the scientific practice with regard to study-design and data analysis. Context effects are ubiquitous in speech perception and reflect the ability of human listeners to successfully perceive highly variable speech signals. In the study of how listeners compensate for coarticulatory variability, past studies have used similar effects speech and tone analogues of speech as strong support for speech-neutral, general auditory mechanisms for compensation for coarticulation. In this manuscript, we revisit compensation for coarticulation by replacing standard button-press responses with mouse-tracking responses and examining both standard geometric measures of uncertainty as well as newer information-theoretic measures that separate fast from slow mouse movements. We found that when our analyses were restricted to end-state responses, tones and speech contexts appeared to produce similar effects. However, a more detailed time-course analysis revealed systematic differences between speech and tone contexts such that listeners’ responses to speech contexts, but not to tone contexts, changed across the experimental session. Analyses of the time course of effects within trials using mouse tracking indicated that speech contexts elicited fewer x-position flips but more area under the curve (AUC) and maximum deviation (MD), and they did so in the slower portions of mouse-tracking movements. Our results indicate critical differences between the time course of speech and nonspeech context effects and that general auditory explanations, motivated by their apparent similarity, be reexamined. Behaviour change interventions offer clinical pharmacists many opportunities to optimise the use of medicines. 'MINDSPACE' is a framework used by a Government-affiliated organisation in the United Kingdom to communicate an approach to changing behaviour through policy. The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) organises constructs of psychological theories that are most relevant to behaviour change into 14 domains. Both frameworks offer a way of identifying what drives a change in behaviour, providing a target for an intervention. This article aims to compare and contrast MINDSPACE and the TDF, and serves to inform pharmacy practitioners about the potential strengths and weaknesses of using either framework in a clinical pharmacy context. It appears that neither framework can deliver evidence-based interventions that can be developed and implemented with the pace demanded by policy and practice-based settings. Background: Cystic Fibrosis (CF) management requires complex treatment regimens but adherence to treatment is poor and has negative health implications. There are various methods of measuring adherence, but little is known regarding the extent of adherence measurement in CF centres throughout the UK and Ireland.Objective: To determine the adherence monitoring practices in CF centres throughout the UK and Ireland, and to establish CF pharmacists' views on these practices.Setting: UK and Ireland Cystic Fibrosis Pharmacists' Group's annual meeting (2014).Methods: A questionnaire was designed, piloted and distributed to pharmacists attending the UK and Ireland Cystic Fibrosis Pharmacists' Group's annual meeting (2014). The main outcome measures were the methods of inhaled/nebulised antibiotic supply and the methods used to measure treatment adherence in CF centres. The questionnaire also ascertained the demographic information of participating pharmacists. Closed question responses were analysed using descriptive statistics. Open questions were analysed using content analysis.Results: Twenty-one respondents (84 % response) were included in the analysis and were mostly from English centres (66.7 %). Detailed records of patients receiving their inhaled/nebulised antibiotics were lacking. Adherence was most commonly described to be measured at 'every clinic visit' (28.6 %) and 'occasionally' (28.6 %). Patient self-reported adherence was the most commonly used method of measuring adherence in practice (90.5 %). The availability of electronic adherence monitoring in CF centres did not guarantee its use. Pharmacists attributed an equal professional responsibility for adherence monitoring in CF to Consultants, Nurses and Pharmacists. Seventy-six percent of pharmacists felt that the current adherence monitoring practices within their own unit were inadequate and associated with the absence of sufficient specialist CF pharmacist involvement. Many suggested that greater specialist pharmacist involvement could facilitate improved adherence monitoring.Conclusion: Current adherence knowledge is largely based on self-report. Further work is required to establish the most appropriate method of adherence monitoring in CF centres, to improve the recording of adherence and to understand the impact of increased specialist pharmacist involvement on that adherence. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is an essential component of lipoprotein particles in both the brain and periphery, and exists in three isoforms in the human population: E2, E3, and E4. ApoE has numerous, well-established roles in neurobiology. Most notably, E4 is associated with earlier onset and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although possession of E2 is protective in the context of AD, E2 appears to confer an increased incidence and severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the biological processes underlying this link remain unclear. In this study, we began to elucidate these associations by examining the effects of apoE on PTSD severity in combat veterans, and on PTSD-like behavior in mice with human apoE. In a group of 92 veterans with PTSD, we observed significantly higher Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale and PTSD Checklist scores in E2+ individuals, as well as alterations in salivary cortisol levels. Furthermore, we measured behavioral and biological outcomes in mice expressing human apoE after a single stressful event as well as following a period of chronic variable stress, a model of combat-related trauma. Mice with E2 showed impairments in fear extinction, and behavioral, cognitive, and neuroendocrine alterations following trauma. To the best of our knowledge, these data constitute the first translational demonstration of PTSD severity in men and PTSD-like symptoms in mice with E2, and point to apoE as a novel biomarker of susceptibility, and potential therapeutic target, for PTSD. Crystalline and melt inclusions were studied in large (up to 2 cm across) dipyramidal quartz phenocrysts from Miocene dacites in the area of the Rosia Montana Au-Ag deposit in Romania. Data were obtained on the homogenization of fluid inclusions and the composition of crystalline inclusions and glasses in more than 40 melt inclusions, which were analyzed on a electron microprobe. The minerals identified in the crystalline inclusions are plagioclase ( An 51-62), orthoclase, micas (biotite and phengite), zircon, magnetite (TiO = 2.8 wt %), and Fe sulfide. Two types of the melts were distinguished when studying the glasses of the melt inclusions. Type 1 of the melts is unusual in composition. The average composition of 20 inclusions is as follows (wt %): 76.1 SiO, 0.39 TiO, 6.23 AlO, 4.61 FeO, 0.09 MnO, 1.64 MgO, 3.04 CaO, 2.79 NaO, 3.79 KO (NaO/KO = 0.74), 0.07 PO, 0.02 Cl. The composition of type 2 of the melts is typical of acid magmas. The average of 23 inclusion analyses is (wt %) 79.3 SiO, 0.16 TiO, 10.27 AlO, 0.63 FeO, 0.08 MnO, 0.29 MgO, 1.83 CaO, 3.56 NaO, 2.79 KO (NaO/KO = 1.28), 0.08 PO, 0.05 Cl. The compositions of these melts significantly differ in concentrations of Ti, Al, Fe, Mg, Ca, Na, and K. The high analytical totals of the analyses (close to 100 wt %, more specifically 98.9 and 99.0 wt %, respectively) testify that the melts were generally poor in water. Two inclusions of type 1 and two inclusions of type 2 were analyzed on an ion probe, and their analyses show remarkable differences in the concentrations of certain trace elements. These concentrations (in ppm) are for the melts of types 1 and 2, respectively, as follows: 10.0 and 0.69 for Be, 29.3 and 5.7 for B, 6.4 and 1.4 for Cr, 146 and 6.9 for V, 74 and 18 for Cu, 92 and 29 for Rb, 45 and 15 for Zr, 1.7 and 0.6 for Hf, 10.3 and 2.3 for Pb, and 52 and 1.3 for U. The Th/U ratio of these two melt types are also notably different: 0.04 and 0.19 for type 1 and 2.0 and 2.9 for type 2. These data led us to conclude that the magmatic melts were derived from two different sources. Our data on the melts of type 1 testify that the magmatic chamber was contaminated with compositionally unusual crustal rocks (perhaps, sedimentary, metamorphic, or hydrothermal rocks enriched in Si, Fe, Mg, U, and some other components). Transfer of competency in a perceptual task often depends on shared information between anatomically different perceptual subsystems. The problem of studying transfer involves isolating conditions of similarity and then trying to account for any resulting differences in transfer. To respect this twofold aspect, this article takes a two-pronged approach to transfer in dynamic touch. The present research first tests the hypothesis that functional equivalence supports the transfer of dynamic touch. Participants were trained to wield unseen objects with the hand or foot and were then tested on anatomically disparate limbs (i.e., the foot or hand, respectively). Next, we examined motion capture of these wielding behaviors for predictors of any asymmetry in transfer. Temporally fractal fluctuations of exploratory behavior can modulate information detection, and we tested whether the fractality of wielding might predict asymmetries in transfer across disparate limbs. Results suggest that transfer of training to anatomically disparate limbs respects functional conditions of similarity and also that the degree of temporally fractal fluctuations predicted limb differences in transfer. In recent work in cognitive science, it has been proposed that cognition is a self-organizing, dynamical system. However, capturing the real-time dynamics of cognition has been a formidable challenge. Furthermore, it has been unclear whether dynamics could effectively address the emergence of abstract concepts (e.g., language, mathematics). Here, we provide evidence that a quintessentially cognitive phenomenon - the spontaneous discovery of a mathematical relation-emerges through self-organization. Participants solved a series of gear-system problems while we tracked their eye movements. They initially solved the problems by manually simulating the forces of the gears but then spontaneously discovered a mathematical solution. We show that the discovery of the mathematical relation was predicted by changes in entropy and changes in power-law behavior, two halhnarks of phase transitions. Thus, the present study demonstrates the emergence of higher order cognitive phenomena through the nonlinear dynamics of self-organization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) is increasingly important in public health decision making, including in low- and middle-income countries. The decision makers' valuation of a unit of health gain, or ceiling ratio (l), is important in CEA as the relative value against which acceptability is defined, although values are usually chosen arbitrarily in practice. Reference case estimates for λ are useful to promote consistency, facilitate new developments in decision analysis, compare estimates against benefit-cost ratios from other economic sectors, and explicitly inform decisions about equity in global health budgets. The aim of this article is to discuss values for λ used in practice, including derivation based on affordability expectations (such as $US150 per disability-adjusted life-year [DALY]), some multiple of gross national income or gross domestic product, and preference-elicitation methods, and explore the implications associated with each approach. The background to the debate is introduced, the theoretical bases of current values are reviewed, and examples are given of their application in practice. Extensive compositional heterogeneity is displayed by Pb-Sb-Au tellurides from the type locality at S $\check{\rm{a}}$ c $\check{\rm{a}}$ rîmb. These phases are collectively considered as varieties of nagyágite in the absence of crystal chemical data confirming the presence of distinct, but topologically closely related compounds. Chemical heterogeneity is seen relative to ‘normal’ nagyágite, with close to the ideal composition Pb3[Pb1.8(Sb1.1,As0.1)1.2]Σ3S6 (AuTe2), which is the primary and common type in the deposit. A modified formula, (Pb3S3)[(Pb2− x )(Sb,As,Te b )1+ x (S3− y Te y )]Σ6(Au1− z− w Te2+ z S w ), accounts for the chemical variation observed. Values of x (0.2 to 1.15) express substitution of Pb by Sb+As for Me2 in sulfosalt modules in the case of Au-depleted and low-Au nagyágite, and by Sb+As+Te b in high-As and low-Pb varieties ( b = x+1−(Sb+As) = 0.24 to 0.29). Excess Te compensates for Au deficiency in the telluride layer, with substitution by S also observed; empirical values of z and w are 0 to 0.45 and 0 to 0.32, respectively. Minor substitution of Te for S ( y < 0.17) is noted in all varieties except low-Au. These varieties are formed during replacement of the ‘normal’ type as seen in overprinting relationships in those veins reactivated during rotation of the duplex fault-system responsible for vein formation. Replacement is by coupled dissolution-reprecipitation reactions, as indicated by pseudomorphism of one nagyágite type by another in all cases. Variable rates of both molar-excess and -deficit reaction are invoked to explain the observed chemical and textural modifications. Low-Pb nagyágite is also present in zoned platelets where it grows over resorbed cores of ideal composition. Such platelets are instead interpreted as products of self-patterning in a residual precipitate. A marked depletion in the Au content of some nagyágite lamellae is considered to be a diffusion driven Te for Au substitution in the presence of Te-bearing fluid. Replacement of ‘normal’ nagyágite by other varieties can be linked to high fluid acidity, whereas replacement by galena-altaite symplectites relates to changes in the fTe2/ fS2 within a narrow domain defined by coexistence of these two minerals. Nagyágite is a mineral with modular crystal chemistry and is able to adjust to variable rates of fluid infiltration by subtle chemical substitutions. Gold mineralization occurs in the Şoimuş Ilii vein, the main Cu prospect in the Highiş Massif, Western Apuseni Mts., Romania. The Highiş Massif is part of the Highiş Biharia Shear Zone, a 320–300 Ma Variscan greenschist belt, with a 114–100 Ma Alpine overprint. In Highiş, phyllonites enclose an igneous core consisting of an Early Permian basic complex intruded by Middle Permian granitoids. The vein is hosted within basalt hornfels at its contact with the 264 Ma Jernova granite. Gold is not only present as native gold, but also as jonassonite (ideally AuBi5S4). The latter occurs as inclusions 1–30 µm in size in chalcopyrite; microanalysis gives the empirical formulae Au1.02(Pb0.47Bi4.51)4.98S4. The two Au minerals are spatially associated with Bi–(Pb) sulfosalts (oversubstituted bismuthinite, cosalite) and sulfotellurides/selenides (ingodite, ikunolite and laitakarite) in blebs/patches, mainly hosted in chalcopyrite. This Au–Bi–Te association overprints an earlier, chalcopyrite-quartz assemblage, occurring as trails along discrete zones of brecciation that crosscut former mineral boundaries. Curvilinear and cuspate boundary textures within the blebs/patches suggest deposition in a molten form. Mineral associations in combination with phase relations indicate that the Au–Bi–Te association formed as a result of melting of pre-existing native Bi (and possibly sulfosalts) at 400 °C under sulfidation conditions. These melts incorporated Au, Pb, Te and S as they moved in the vein during shearing and were locked within dilational sites. Native Bi occurs as coarse aggregates along vein margins, but in the Au–Bi–Te association, it is present only as small droplets in shear gashes, never together with other Bi- and Au-minerals. The Bi-derived melts are part of an internal remobilizate which also includes chlorite and adularia. Minerals in the system Au–Bi–Te were deposited from a neutral low reducing fluid during Alpine shearing in the Early Cretaceous. The fluid also assisted solid-state mobilisation of chalcopyrite and cobaltite. This study illustrates the significant potential of Bi, a low melting-point chalcophile element (LMCE), to act as Au scavenger at temperatures as low as 400 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the Alma-Ata Conference in 1978 reiterated the goal of ‘Health for All by the Year 2000’, health service delivery programs promoting the primary health care approach using community health workers (CHWs) have been established in many cost-effectiveness of health care systems by reaching large numbers of previously underserved people with high-impact basic services at low cost. However, there is a dearth of data on the cost-effectiveness of CHW programs to confirm these views. This may be because conventional approaches to economic evaluation, particularly cost-effectiveness, tend no to capture the institutional features of CHW programs. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy was used to investigate the radiation damage in a powder of 2-acetoxybenzoic acid (Aspirin). Three types of radicals occur by γ-irradiation of Aspirin at room temperature. Two of them are the result of hydrogen abstraction while the third is produced by hydrogen addition at one of the carbon atoms of the ring. Powder ESR spectra of the [Cu(Asp)](HO) complex show the existence of Cu(II) acetate like dimers characterized by a strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction ( J=−288 cm). In pyridine-dimethylformamide solutions the monomeric species prevail. Two different monomeric species, the Cu(DMF) of planar-distorted tetrahedral (T) symmetry and the Cu(Asp)(DMF) with elongated tetrahedral-octahedral symmetry were evidenced in DMF solution adsorbed on NaY zeolite. In 40 % Py+60 % DMF solution two monomeric species were also identified. These are Cu(Asp)(DMF) and Cu(Asp)(Py), the last species having a CuNO chromophore in a trans squareplanar arrangement.
