The architectural style found in Wa and Tamale is renowned for its distinctive use of earthen construction, which features square buildings with flat roofs and circular compounds with conical thatch roofs. Recently, there has been a growing inclination towards the use of alternative construction techniques in which nontraditional materials such as cement, bitumen, and used car engine oil are utilised to render wall surfaces. These structures show how the materials and design in northern Ghana have substantially evolved. However, what forces drive the changes in cob construction in this region? Furthermore, how might these changes impact the preservation of cultural heritage in Ghana? To explore the factors that contribute to the departure from traditional earthen building methods that rely on local materials, this study employs a constructivist research approach. Participants in a survey that informed this study revealed that they struggled to access building materials to construct their houses. While most of the people who responded to the survey have resided in buildings constructed with a mixture of beini and dawadawa, they hesitate to use plant-based biostabilisers in new constructions. Factors that hinder the ongoing construction and preservation of earthen buildings include shifting cultural and social norms, environmental changes, difficulties accessing local building resources, flood risks, regular maintenance requirements, and societal influences. Thus, this study concludes that if communities are empowered to take ownership and recognise the value of their cultural heritage, they are likely to be increasingly aware and appreciative of their architectural heritage. The Ancient Rope Bridge Ferry, a culturally significant heritage site along the Silk Road, represents a key element of China’s historical legacy. However, prolonged neglect and inadequate maintenance have left the site increasingly vulnerable to natural weathering. Conservation efforts are further complicated by a limited understanding of the building materials and the unclear mechanisms of deterioration, which impede effective preservation strategies. To address this, this study assessed the conservation state of this monument through laboratory analysis and field tests. Several techniques, such as XRD, polarizing microscopy, and TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA) were used to investigate the weathering of sandstone, revealing that weathering accelerates feldspar alteration and carbonate mineral dissolution. Mortar was also found to contribute to salt weathering and the formation of gypsum crusts. Field non-destructive testing (NDT) and a CRITIC-based Integrated Weathering Index (IWI) were employed to quantify the degree of weathering. The results showed spatial variability in weathering: (1) the most pronounced deterioration occurred in the upper and lower wet areas of the wall due to precipitation and capillary water, respectively; (2) the northeast facades of walls were most heavily weathered, primarily influenced by wind-driven rains; (3) while weathering in the ferry and fort zones was similar, greater biological colonization was observed in the ferry zone. This study aims to explore the spatial distribution and site selection characteristics of cultural heritage sites, as well as the impact of the natural environment on the site's location. A total of 448 cultural heritage sites in Jinan City (Shandong province), which have been listed as key cultural relic protection units from before the Qin Dynasty to after the Qing Dynasty (ca. 7500 BCE–present), were analyzed using spatial analysis tools in ArcGIS 10.6 software. The main research findings are as follows: (1) cultural heritage sites have a wide distribution and few cores and are characterized by spatial agglomeration and the formation of a single core area around the Lixia District; (2) in terms of spatiotemporal evolution, cultural heritage sites follow a "diffusion–aggregation–diffusion–aggregation" trend, exhibiting a "southwest–northeast–northwest" trajectory, with characteristics of continuity and a centripetal pattern; and (3) cultural heritage sites are mainly distributed in alluvial plains with heights ranging from 2.6–100 m, slopes ranging from 0–5°, and distances ≤ 1 km from water systems. The more recent the construction year of the cultural heritage site is to modern times, the more closely its type is to production and living, and the more relevant it is to the natural environment. Immersive Virtual Reality (iVR) devices are increasingly affordable and accessible to consumers. The widespread adoption of this technology for professional training is now finding its way into various other fields. One field that is gaining significant popularity is Cultural Heritage (CH), where iVR enables the reconstruction and exploration of lost heritage. However, an up-to-date systematic review of iVR within this field will be of great benefit. Hence, the present review of 94 papers published between 2013 and 2022 that follows PRISMA methodology on virtual reconstruction of CH for iVR. The aim is to identify the key factors behind the development of these applications and their standards. To do so, a statistical analysis on the following topics was performed: (1) nationality, publication date, and article type; (2) heritage type and its current state of preservation; (3) the area of final application and the features of the reconstructions; (4) the characteristics of the iVR experience; and (5) the assessment of the iVR applications. The role of cultural heritage (CH) in sustainable tourism management (STM) goes beyond mere conservation; it is a dynamic process that involves actively integrating cultural richness into the tourism experience. This study, employing a quantitative research design with 447 tourists through online questionnaires, explores the intricate relationship between CH and STM, focusing on preserving identities and enhancing visitor experiences. The research introduces a novel aspect by emphasizing the favorable economic outcomes linked to destinations successfully incorporating CH into their tourism strategies. This insight is valuable for destination planners, emphasizing the economic benefits derived from CH initiatives. The key findings confirm significant and positive associations between the preservation of CH and STM, highlighting its substantial contribution to improved visitor experiences in sustainable tourism. Moreover, the study establishes a positive correlation between CH preservation and heightened visitor satisfaction in sustainable tourism. Effective STM emerges as a positive influence on the preservation of cultural identities, while destinations integrating CH into tourism strategies experience favorable economic impacts, reflected in increased tourist spending and local economic development. These findings offer valuable insights for future research, policymaking, and strategic planning in destinations seeking a harmonious balance between CH preservation and the advancement of tourism. Serious games are generally considered to induce positive effects in the areas of learning motivation and learning gains. Yet few studies have examined how these factors are related specially in the context of visual aesthetic studies. Therefore, an empirical study was conducted to test the relationship between anticipated enjoyment and willingness to play, as well as between game enjoyment, self-reported cognitive and motivational learning gains and test results. In an explorative study, 25 students from undergraduate course in architecture school played the learning game Temple Lego. The results of pre-test and post-tests were analyzed using multiple linear regressions. The analysis showed that anticipated enjoyment played only a minor part in students' willingness to learn with serious games. Of greater importance was the students' expectation that the learning game would be easy and instructive. There was a correlation between enjoyment and the post-test scores to continue being engaged with the subject matter of the game. We discuss the findings and pedagogical implications that can be applied to developing serious virtual reality (VR) games to learn about similar historical structures and contexts which is novel and sparsely explored. In the late Anatolian Seljuk period (1243–1308), architectural design took on new symbolic significance, focusing on grandeur and ornamentation as a response to the shifting political landscape. One of the critical features of this era is the transformation seen in the geometric layouts of some muqarnas designs, exemplified explicitly in Konya Sahip Ata mosque muqarnas (1258). While the arrangements may appear irregular at first glance, closer analysis reveals that they are structured according to a dodecagonal system. This study focuses on the geometric layouts in the plan projections of Sahip Ata mosque muqarnas, showing that dodecagrams were used to organize these complex patterns, reflecting an advanced and deliberate approach to design during this transitional period. Cultural diversity conservation is crucial for global sustainability, especially in rural areas facing challenges such as shrinking settlements and integration into nature reserves. However, existing research lacks discussion on how to establish cultural diversity conservation areas while considering the trade-offs with nature reserves. To address this gap, we employ the SCP method to develop a planning framework that balances ecosystem service benefits for nature conservation with the effectiveness of cultural diversity conservation, applied in rural Southwest China. Our findings indicate that overly ambitious or conservative conservation goals hinder cultural diversity conservation, whereas a value-based scenario enhances conservation effectiveness and reduces conflicts with rural natural ecosystems. We propose rural cultural diversity conservation networks comprising 9 cultural diversity areas, 33 core conservation areas, and 233 subcatchments. Compared with existing systems, our new conservation networks improve effectiveness by 29.62% and reduce the impact on the ecosystem service benefits of ecological conservation by 23.65%. The purpose of the current article is to provide an overview of an open-access audiovisual aggregation and search service platform developed for Greek audiovisual content during the OAVA (Open Access AudioVisual Archive) project. The platform allows the search of audiovisual resources utilizing metadata descriptions, as well as full-text search utilizing content generated from automatic speech recognition (ASR) processes through deep learning models. A dataset containing reliable Greek audiovisual content providers and their resources (1710 in total) is created. Both providers and resources are reviewed according to specific criteria already established and used for content aggregation purposes, to ensure the quality of the content and to avoid copyright infringements. Well-known aggregation services and well-established schemas for audiovisual resources have been studied and considered regarding both aggregated content and metadata. Most Greek audiovisual content providers do not use established metadata schemas when publishing their content, nor technical cooperation with them is guaranteed. Thus, a model is developed for reconciliation and aggregation. To utilize audiovisual resources the OAVA platform makes use of the latest state-of-the-art ASR approaches. OAVA platform supports Greek and English speech-to-text models. Specifically for Greek, to mitigate the scarcity of available datasets, a large-scale ASR dataset is annotated to train and evaluate deep learning architectures. The result of the above-mentioned efforts, namely selection of content, metadata, development of appropriate ASR techniques, and aggregation and enrichment of content and metadata, is the OAVA platform. Numerous studies of microorganisms isolated from the surface of cultural heritage objects, including library documents, are regularly carried out in different countries. Although the micromycete composition in each case varies, some species are constantly isolated. The structure of micromycete communities that inhabit library documents was studied in 57 cities of Russia located in seven federal districts (Northwestern, Central, Southern, Volga, Ural, Siberian, and Far Eastern). Micromycetes of 95 species from 32 genera were isolated and identified. The mycobiota of the library documents represented by Ascomycota has more than 90% of the species richness; Mucoromycota make up 3–9% and Basidiomycota, 3–4%. The Aspergillaceae family was the leading family: it accounted for 48.5–67.3% of the total species richness. In all regions, species diversity is moderate: the Shannon index ranged from 2.7 to 3.3. The Mcintosh species richness index is high everywhere (48–126), except in the Ural district (15.3). The McIntosh (0.76–0.84) and Pielow (0.80–0.91) dominance indices indicate a high level of species evenness in the mycobiota. The obtained values demonstrate the stability the document mycobiota in libraries from different regions. Significant species similarity between the districts was revealed by calculation of binary coefficients: the Jaccard coefficient was from 0.44 to 0.60; the Sørensen's qualitative measure of similarity was from 0.63 to 0.75; the quantitative similarity measure of Sørensen was from 0.44 to 0.71, and Morisita–Horn was from 0.66 to 1.0. The groups of dominant species in different regions are quite similar. The study of the ecological diversity of mycobiota on library books demonstrated the moderate diversity and the stability of the community. A high degree of similarity of taxonomic structures was established regardless of the climate conditions of the regions. Cosmopolitans characterized by high frequency of occurrence formed the major core of the library book mycobiota: Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Mucor plumbeus, and Penicillium aurantiogriseum. A reading of the heritage of quarries in the Apuan Alps highlights the tension between the preservation of the landscape and the environment, both of which are enshrined in Article 9 of the Italian Constitution. On the one hand, the marble quarrying industry represents the historical and cultural identity of the area, while on the other hand, there is a conflict between traditional mining practices and landscape management when placed in the broader context of renewable energy technologies. Recent studies are showing that some lights suitable for illuminating the urban fabric (i.e. that do not include the red, green and blue sets of primary colours) may halt biological colonisation on monuments, mainly that caused by phototrophic subaerial biofilms (SABs), which may exacerbate the biodeterioration of substrates. However, the light-triggered mechanisms that cause changes in the growth of the phototrophs remain unknown. Environmental proteomics could be used to provide information about the changes in the SAB metabolism under stress inflicted by nocturnal lighting. Here, laboratory-produced SABs, composed of Chlorophyta, Streptophyta and Cyanobacteriota, were subjected to three types of lighting used for monuments: cool white, warm white and amber + green (potentially with a biostatic effect). A control without light (i.e. darkness) was also included for comparison. The nocturnal lighting impaired the capacity of the SABs to decompose superoxide radicals and thus protect themselves from oxidative stress. Cool white and warm white light both strongly affected the proteomes of the SABs and reduced the total peptide content, with the extent of the reduction depending on the genera of the organisms involved. Analysis of the photo-damaging effect of amber + green light on the biofilm metabolism revealed a negative impact on photosystems I and II and production of photosystem antenna protein-like, as well as a triggering effect on protein metabolism (synthesis, folding and degradation). Neutron tomography is gaining popularity particularly in cultural heritage research, for non-destructively analysing the inner structure of bulk metal artefacts, such as bronzes, but the induced temporary decay radiation is often considered as a drawback. However, this delayed gamma-emission can be put to good use: by performing gamma spectroscopy after neutron tomography, the interior elemental composition of artefacts can be obtained "for free". Inspired by this, we propose a ray-tracing approach to non-invasively quantify both interior geometry and elemental composition using only a single neutron tomography experiment. This strategy aligns well with both the aim for efficient use of neutron beam time and the expectation from curators and conservators for minimal neutron irradiation. Here, we outline the core principle of this method, demonstrate the extent of its quantification capability on bulk objects of known composition by fusing neutron tomography and delayed-gamma spectroscopy data sets. We also showcase its practical application on an ancient solid-cast Indonesian bronze statuette, by which we gain insights into how the pristine inner bronze segregated into a different composition than the surrounding shell. Our objective, as part of the planned conservation work, was to identify culturable fungi related to the formation of various deterioration symptoms occurring on the Spectatius family marble tomb, the largest monument of the Roman Necropolis in Šempeter, Slovenia. By using fluorescent microscopy, microbial cultivation methods and standard DNA sequencing we were able to identify 21 fungal isolates, 16 being filamentous moulds, primarily dominated by xerophilic Cladosporium spp. (mainly Cladosporium langeronii RN 28) and some Alternaria species; and 5 yeast or yeast like species namely Torula fici, Filobasidium wieringae, Rhodotorula babjevae and Blastobotrys peoriensis. Locations on the tomb, which are well sheltered against rainfall, contained higher concentrations of xerophilic fungi to those, which are completely or partially exposed to rain. The black fungal species of Cladosporium spp. and Alternaria spp. formed the bulk of melanized-greyish patina present on the bottom reliefs and within the cracks of the inner dome of the Spectacius tomb. Moreover, the red coloured yeast R. babjevae caused a thick red pigmentation right under the top roof of the monument’s left side. The obtained results indicated that not only moulds but also yeasts can cause significant biodeterioration. Lastly we isolated indigenous mycoparasitic strains of F. wieringae (RN 37 and RN 38) that could potentially be used in biocontrol formulations applicable in situ for the sustainable preservation of the Spectatius family tomb monument. The proliferation of microorganisms in outdoor stone sculptures and cultural objects can damage the structure and aesthetics of the materials through biodeterioration mechanisms. Biocides and synthetic products are often used to prevent this phenomenon, despite their negative impact on the environment and human health. Less toxic alternatives with reduced environmental impact can be an option for the preventive conservation of stone sculptures to reduce the environmental impact. In this work, chitosan formulations reinforced with two types of cellulose crystals (microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) or cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs)) and with or without citric acid and sodium tripolyphosphate were prepared. The films obtained with these formulations showed low solubility, and those only containing MCC or CNCs had the lowest wettability. The formulation containing 2% (w/v) MCC was selected for further analysis and supplemented with oregano essential oil (OEO) at 1% (v/v) and 2% (v/v), exhibiting low solubility, swelling and wettability when polymerised in film form. Inoculation of the films with Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Rhodotorula spp. resulted in total or partial inhibition of their growth, as well as a 60–100% reduction in Penicillium chrysogenum growth, depending on the concentration of OEO. The formulation with 2% (v/v) OEO was applied to samples of granite, marble and limestone, forming a protective, yet irregular coating on their surfaces. Techniques developed at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for increasing the sensitivity of atomic and molecular spectroscopy in studies of microsamples taken from paintings (more than 200 artworks) are reviewed. A microscopic sample of a paint layer from the painting "The Birth of Venus" studied using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and surface enhanced Raman scattering is presented as an example of the multi-analytical approach. The results of the study allow one to conclude that the work was created in the glue tempera technique. Chrome orange, lithopone, and iron oxide pigments (like red or yellow ochers, for example) were identified. Land abandonment and rural depopulation are escalating worldwide, presenting sustainability dilemmas for both rural and urban regions. However, there remains a dearth of research on the sociocultural dimensions of abandonment from a local standpoint. This investigation focuses on a case study conducted in southeastern Spain, wherein a social survey was used to evaluate the perspectives of local communities concerning human–nature interconnectedness, land abandonment, and their impacts on quality of life. A survey campaign was administered in the case study region during the spring of 2021, and 122 surveys were collected. The findings identify, in the context of the progressive abandonment of rural lands in Spain, key factors that explain the desire of local people to inhabit and not abandon rural regions in southeastern Spain. Our results also show a strong connection between people and nature in rural Spain, which is explained by the capacity of locals to form relational values in rural environments and the existence of philosophical worldviews and emotional attachments to rural lifestyles. However, barriers to not abandoning rural environments were also identified, including a lack of professional and economic opportunities. Our results suggest that the mitigation of depopulation in rural areas in Spain requires actions to foster land stewardship and address socioeconomic imbalances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The primary goal of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is to assess performance and determine the physical state of the structures. Technological improvements and the ubiquitous accessibility of Wi-Fi networks have enhanced real-time SHM based on the Internet of Things (IoT). Extensive structural health evaluation can be conducted using real-time test data collected from various IoT sensors on civil infrastructures. These sensors monitor multiple structural health parameters, and the data is accessible via cloud-based storage platforms. This paper presents an overview of IoT technologies and provides an extensive literature review of IoT applications for civil infrastructures, highlighting associated challenges.

This study examines the impact of air pollution on Jordan's cultural heritage sites, focusing on key pollutants (SO2, HNO3, O3, PM10) and climate conditions. Using 2019 data and future projections for 2040–2059 and 2080–2099, the research reveals significant material corrosion in urban areas like Amman and Irbid, driven by pollutants such as SO₂ and PM10. Random Forest Analysis identifies these pollutants as primary contributors to material degradation. Future scenarios indicate corrosion rates exceeding safe limits across Jordan, underscoring the need for proactive conservation strategies. This work highlights the critical role of air quality management in protecting cultural heritage, especially under climate change pressures, and provides guidance for national policy development. With the rapid advancement of digital games, serious games have emerged as a significant medium for engaging with cultural heritage. As a primary visual element in cultural heritage, color plays a crucial role in users' digital learning. However, there is currently a scarcity of serious game designs that specifically focus on cultural heritage colors, indicating potential for improvement in the user experience. To further enhance users' perception of color and create a more engaging and enriching digital cultural heritage experience, this study proposes a virtual reality serious game (VR SG) design method specifically tailored to cultural heritage colors. Additionally, it explores the potential of VR SG in enhancing the education, entertainment, and dissemination aspects of these colors within cultural heritage. Specifically, we explore how to integrate relevant knowledge of cultural heritage colors into the application process of VR SG and assess users' learning performance, engagement, and interactive willingness within these VR SG. The study employs the colors of the Dunhuang cave frescoes as a case study for design practice. A total of 30 participants took part in a between-group comparison experiment, utilizing a mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative and qualitative assessments to compare the performance of a VR SG with a VR exhibition game. The results indicate that both the VR SG and the VR exhibition game effectively enhance users' understanding and retention of knowledge, with VR SG users demonstrating higher levels of task engagement, emotional engagement, willingness to explore, and willingness to share. This study confirms the potential of VR SG to enhance the education, entertainment, and dissemination aspects of cultural heritage colors and discusses the implications of VR SG in supporting digital cultural heritage experiences. This study describes the process of digitally reconstructing the ancient Korean city of Suwon Hwaseong in 3D utilizing Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) resources to accurately represent its wooden architectural heritage. Previous 3D reconstructions of cultural heritage have often prioritized appearance or remained partially disassembled. However, our reconstruction method offers a comprehensive representation of the appearance and the internal structure of wooden architectural heritage, which can be suitable for restoration maintenance. To ensure accuracy in digital restoration, we collected and utilized administrative records and historical materials, including the geography, fortress walls, folk houses, and Haenggung (the temporary palace of the Joseon Dynasty)—drawing from the archive of the Korean Cultural Heritage Service's management records and the 1796 manuscript "Uigwe: Royal Protocols of the Hwaseong Fortress" which documents the construction of the ancient city of Suwon Hwaseong. Extensive architectural records were used to generate HBIM data, which digitized historical records, documents, and drawings to accurately represent the complex layout of the wooden architectural heritage. For the folk houses that lacked design records and the fortress walls that retained their original shape, we performed a digital restoration-based façade modeling. These elements of the ancient city of Suwon Hwaseong were assembled into a 3D model using Unreal Engine (version 5.1.1) to digitally reconstruct the city and enhance its visual representation. The digital restoration content, which utilizes visual effects and precise rendering from a game engine, can be used for the restoration, repair, and maintenance of both appearance and internal structures. Museums, which are among the most popular science institutions outside schools, are usually used to display and introduce historical culture and cultural relics to tourists. Text and audio explanations are used by traditional museums to popularize historical knowledge and science for tourists, and general interactive systems are based on desktops. This learning method is relatively boring in terms of experience. As a result, tourists have no desire or interest in actively exploring and learning about bronze ware, so they only have a basic understanding about bronze ware. Since most tourists are familiar with games, they are more likely to be attracted by game content and will actively explore and interact with it. In addition, a certain degree of reality is created by virtual reality technology and an immersive experience through head-mounted devices is provided to users. In this paper, we take Chinese bronzes as the research objects. We first use 3D laser scanners to obtain bronze models ; then, we build a virtual museum environment, and we finally design a virtual reality curation game based on this bronze digital museum. This game offers visitors an immersive museum roaming and bronze ware interactive experience. Through a combination of text, video learning, and games, visitors' curiosity and desire to explore bronze ware are stimulated, and their understanding and ability to remember bronze ware knowledge can be deepened. Emergent digital technologies provide cultural heritage spaces with the opportunity to reassess their current user journey. An immersive user experience can be developed that is innovative, dynamic, and customised for each attendee. Museums have already begun to move towards interactive exhibitions utilising Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IOT), and more recently, the use of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) has become more common in cultural heritage spaces to present items of historical significance. VR concentrates on the provision of full immersion within a digitised environment utilising a headset, whilst AR focuses on the inclusion of digitised content within the existing physical environment that can be accessed through a medium such as a mobile phone application. Machine learning techniques such as a recommender system can support an immersive user journey by issuing personalised recommendations regarding a user's preferred future content based on their previous activity. An ethical approach is necessary to take the precautions required to protect the welfare of human participants and eliminate any aspect of stereotyping or biased behaviour. This paper sets out a human-centred manifesto intended to provide guidance when inducing smart digital immersion in cultural heritage spaces. A review of existing digital cultural heritage projects was conducted to determine their adherence to the manifesto with the findings indicating that Education was a primary focus across all projects and that Personalisation, Respect and Empathy, and Support were also highly valued. This paper brings empirical evidence on the role of cultural heritage assets in promoting economic growth. The case of Greece at regional level over the period 2000–2019 is taken as an example, owing to important cultural heritage endowment. Economic growth is approached by formulating a neoclassical growth model augmented with a dynamic cultural heritage index. The relationship between economic growth and cultural heritage is examined through a heterogeneous and cross-correlated panel data analysis. The empirical results reveal a positive impact of cultural heritage endowment on economic growth. Also, a significant positive influence of physical capital and a negative impact of unemployment on the economy are evidenced. Summary: The pathological anatomical collection Vienna (Pathologisch-Anatomische Sammlung Wien; PASW) is a living and still growing research collection. It was established as early as 1796 as part of the Medical University of Vienna, acquired the status of an independent federal museum in 1971, and was assigned to the Natural History Museum Vienna in 2012. It houses a wide range of human wet and dry specimens and further objects, such as moulages, medical devices, microbiological and histological specimens, and a photo archive (approximately 50,000 objects), which, as a meaningful source, may contribute to disclosing not only aspects of the medical history and the development of corresponding museums in Vienna, but is also considered a collection of cultural and current scientific relevance, quite comparable to today's biobanks. Most of the tissue amassment represents wet organic specimens and human skeletons or skeletal elements representing, e.g., congenital and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, injuries, neoplasms, or musculoskeletal diseases, basically collected as descriptive anatomical teaching aids. This article reviews the current medical issues on which research has been and is being conducted by including PASW specimens (hereby using the ICD-10 code), and the extent to and ethical conditions under which this important heritage could be used as a reference collection for clinical and bioanthropological (paleopathological and palaeoepidemiological) studies; finally, this article reflects on the value and future research prospects, taking into account different positions and the ongoing discussions in pathological anatomical human tissue collections. The spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of cultural heritage reveal the trajectory of human activity changes, and a deep analysis of its natural and cultural factors holds significant reference value for the overall conservation and management of cultural heritages. This study focuses on the cultural heritage at the provincial level and above in Fujian, utilizing GIS spatial analysis to explore the spatiotemporal evolution of cultural heritages and their natural and human influencing factors. The research findings are as follows: (1) The distribution of cultural heritage in Fujian exhibits a clustering pattern, with dense areas transitioning from the upstream regions of the prehistoric and pre-Qin periods to the eastern coastal areas gradually. (2) The Ming and Qing dynasties have the highest number of cultural heritages, with the type of heritage transitioning from ancient sites in the early periods to ancient architecture, and in modern times, mainly important historical sites and representative architectural heritages. (3) The overall centroid coordinates of cultural heritage reveal a shift from the northern part of Fujian to the eastern and southern parts. (4) Natural factors significantly influence the distribution of cultural heritage, with a higher concentration in plain and hilly areas, on slight slopes with gradients between 0.5° and 2.0°, and on the southern and southeastern slopes, especially within a 1-kilometer radius of rivers. (5) The creation of cultural heritage during historical periods is closely linked to the regional history, culture, political, and economic environments. The positive development of these socio-cultural factors has a promotional effect on the quantity of cultural heritage. This study demonstrates the utility and applicability of GIS spatial analysis techniques in cultural heritage research, providing a methodological framework that can be adapted and applied internationally. Large, immovable rammed earth buildings in UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites are at serious risk of disaster due to environmental changes. In this study, the rammed earth city walls (REWs) located in the Ancient City of Ping Yao, a World Cultural Heritage site, affected by heavy precipitation in early October 2021, were used as the research object. The study aimed to specify the details of deterioration through multiple indicator data collection, semi-quantitatively evaluate the degree of deterioration of REWs, and investigate the causes of typical deterioration in REWs with different spatial distributions under the influence of heavy precipitation. Based on the current research and experimental data, and considering the mode of action and form of deterioration, a classification system for the landslide-like collapses of REWs under the influence of precipitation was constructed. Factors such as the influence of heavy precipitation and the REWs' intrinsic features resulted in significant variations in structural properties and deterioration development of REWs with different spatial distribution characteristics. Finally, based on the research in this paper and the conservation ideology of cultural relics that respects the original and minimizes intervention, we propose protection recommendations for the daily management and conservation of the REWs to provide guidance for future research. A major goal of current international urban development and construction is to lower carbon emissions. Synergies exist between the preservation of historic cities and the development of low-carbon cities; however, the relationship between preservation of historic cities and carbon emissions remains unclear. This study focuses on the cities in the "Yellow-Canal-Yangtze" watershed community, which includes the Yellow River Basin, Yangtze River Basin, and the Grand Canal region, and aims to verify the differences in CO2 emissions (CE) between historic and non-historic cities through multiple comparisons after ANOVA. Additionally, Ridge Regression was used to determine the impact and dimensions of the relevant variables associated with the preservation of historic cities on CE. Combined with national development goals, this study predicts changes in the CE of historic city preservation under different scenarios. This study found significant differences between historic and non-historic cities, as the total CE of historic cities is 2.42 times higher than that of non-historic cities. The dimension with the largest difference was the CE related to transportation, with aviation emissions of historic cities reaching 15.22 times higher than that of non-historic cities. Although the preservation of historic cities has led to an overall increase in the CE, there is significant potential for CE reduction in land use, transportation infrastructure, and tourism development related to historic city preservation. In the future, historic cities can contribute to China's carbon neutrality and the United Nation's development goals through the creation of larger historical preservation areas, more convenient public transportation, and more vibrant tourism. The Indian subcontinent is well known for its rich geological and cultural diversity. The Magadh region, with its plethora of heritage sites, stands as a living testament to the rich tapestry of India's cultural and geological history. The geodiversity of the Gaya-Rajgir area of Bihar, India comprises of volcano-sedimentary sequences juxtaposing with Rajgir meta-sediments and volcano sedimentary sequence of Bathani, anorthosite-gabbro and granites suites of Barabar-Nagarjuni area. The present report highlights some of the important geological and cultural sites of this region. The pillow basalt site of Churi Hill, Gaya is proposed to be classified as a geoheritage site which needs immediate conservation in addition to the already classified Barabar caves geoheritage site having been known for its remarkable architectural antiquities, relics and inscriptions of the rich historical past of Mauryan dynasty as engraved in the granite of the cave. The area is also characterized by the presence of its rich natural, geological, geomorphological, and significant historical and cultural heritage especially the Churi hills, Mahabodhi Temple, Vishnupad Temple, Nalanda University relict site, Caves of Barabar Hill, Rajgir area, cyclopean walls, hot water spring of Brahmakund, peace pagoda etc. From the ancient ruins of Nalanda to the spiritual sanctuaries like Vishnupad Temple and Mahabodhi Temple, each site narrates a unique story of the past. The Barabar Caves and Rajgir add further layers to this narrative, offering a glimpse into the diverse facets of the region's history. Context: Abandonment of cultural landscape practices has had a notable impact on grasslands and domestic livestock that depend on them. This affects the prerequisites for sustainable transitions of cultural landscapes, which combine traditional livelihoods and novel ones like tourism. Objectives: The aims of this study were to explore (1) the long-term temporal dynamics of grassland and livestock in a regional gradient from coastal to inland landscapes in Norway and (2) the temporal development of tourism types among regions. Methods: Using three regions as case studies, with 62 municipalities, we analyzed (1) the temporal dynamics of grassland and livestock using agricultural census data from 1918 to 1999 and (2) two tourism types. Kruskal–Wallis and ANOVA were used to examine whether the relative changes in grassland areas and livestock units, respectively, differed significantly among regions. A PCA was conducted to explore relationships between grassland and livestock types. The proportions of tourist categories were compared. Results: The grassland area and thematic resolution of census data declined over time. Grassland areas correlated with domestic livestock units. Multivariate analysis explained 68% of the variation in grassland and livestock types among municipalities. There was a notable increase in the number of tourists, with summer tourism dominating where the cultural landscape was well conserved. Conclusions: Our study underscores the importance of integrating regional historical trajectories for the conservation and use of valuable cultural landscapes, thereby providing sustainable transitions that combine traditional livelihoods and new types as tourism. The rapid evolution of the digital landscape has catalyzed the integration of blockchain technology within the domain of cultural heritage, particularly in virtual museums within the Metaverse. This study introduces ArchaeoMeta, a novel framework designed to leverage blockchain technology to enhance security, authenticity, and visitor interaction in a virtual museum environment. Utilizing smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum Sepolia testnet, the framework manages visitor interactions and secures digital artifacts, addressing challenges associated with scalability and user experience under varying loads. The performance evaluation involved simulating user interactions, scaling up to ten thousand concurrent users, to assess the impact on transaction latency, gas usage, and blockchain size. Findings reveal significant scalability challenges, as transaction latency and blockchain size increased with the number of users, highlighting areas for optimization in managing high user traffic within the blockchain infrastructure. This study contributes to the understanding of blockchain applications in cultural heritage, suggesting that while ArchaeoMeta offers a robust platform for virtual museums, enhancements in scalability through layer-2 solutions or alternative blockchain platforms are essential for its practical implementation. Owing to the instability of gelatine in hygrothermal environments, gelatine-based cultural heritage undergo various deterioration processes, such as cracking, peeling, warping, curling and fracture, posing significant threats to its long-term preservation. Building on previous research, this study investigates the stability of polyol glycidyl ether–gelatine composite films under high-humidity and high-temperature conditions using ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDE) as a model compound. The hygrothermal ageing properties of EGDE–gelatine composite films are evaluated in terms of macrosize, mesoscopic structure, surface properties and mechanical properties. Results indicate that EGDE enhances the dimensional stability and swelling ratios of the composite films, stabilizes the pore structure and distribution and maintains the hydrophilicity and molecular structural stability under hygrothermal ageing conditions. Furthermore, the incorporation of EGDE leads to superior stress–strain properties of the composite films in such challenging environments. The coffin-reliquary for the relics of the holy Serbian king Stefan Uroš III of Dečani has been made around 1343 as a rectangular chest with a gable cover. The present study aimed to identify the wood this coffin-reliquary was made, as well as the pigments and metals found on its surface. The combination of anatomical traits (diffuse-porosity, distinct helical thickenings in vessels, simple perforation plates, 3- to 4-seriate noded rays and diffuse-in-aggregates axial parenchyma) showed that the wood belongs to linden, i.e., to the botanical genus Tilia L. (Malvaceae). The linden is one of the sacred trees in Serbian culture, and its wood could also be used due to its ease for joinery. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF analyzer) was used for in situ determination of the material chemistry of the pigments, as well as the metals on the wooden surfaces of the coffin. Their elemental composition showed that wooden coffin-reliquary was painted with vermilion, malachite or copper resinate, orpiment, and lead white, while metal surfaces were shown to be gold and silver. Medieval defensive walls are a distinctive feature of Italian cultural heritage. These structures testify the origins of historical centres and, in some cases, the consequences of the events occurred over time. The typical configuration of medieval defensive walls, generally characterized by high slenderness ratios, out-of-plumb, the absence of deep and adequate foundations, made these elements particularly vulnerable toward seismic actions. This study focused on the assessment of the seismic safety of Italian medieval defensive walls toward out-of-plane failure mechanisms induced by seismic actions. To this end, a simple approach based on the use of generalized dimensionless capacity curves is presented. These curves, derived by the Authors from a calibration process involving a set of selected real cases, allows for a rapid preliminary seismic assessment of masonry walls particularly useful for getting an initial idea of the condition of the walls with respect to seismic actions also considering the presence of pre-existing out-of-plumb configurations. The proposed approach has been applied in the paper to the real case study of medieval walls of Cittadella, a town in northern Italy, considering the pre-existing out-of-plumb configuration. The obtained results have shown the vulnerability of these walls in case of occurrence of masonry disaggregation and, consequently, the importance of performing specific surveys finalized to investigate this phenomenon. The application of the proposed approach has clearly shown its feasibility and usefulness for the seismic evaluation. Moreover, the comparison with the corresponding results obtained by using the actual capacity curves, rather than the generalized ones, has underlined its good level of reliability. The biodeterioration of cultural heritage monuments is a worldwide phenomenon, closely linked to the presence of microorganisms and macroorganisms. Microbial colonization leads to physical, chemical damage and esthetic changes. Synthetic polymers, particularly acrylics, are often used to consolidate and protect monuments and artistic stone surfaces. To increase acrylics performances regarding to durability and antimicrobials' activity, nanoparticles (NPs) were added to polymers. In this study, silver NP was biosynthesized by Malva sylvestris aqueous extract. Furthermore, the in situ method was used for nanocomposite synthesis, which would be simplified the procedure of synthesis. For this, the precursors including the plant aqueous extract, AgNO3 solution and polymer were mixed, and nanocomposite was formed. The morphological characteristics of the obtained nanocomposite were determined using field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) confirmed AgNPs existence in the composite. Next, the nanocomposite's antibacterial properties were tested on Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Aspergillus niger, and Alternaria alternata. The antibacterial activity of bioengineered nanocomposite compared to acrylic polymer, alone. The results of antimicrobial experiments have shown that the number of bacterial and fungal cells was decreased by 1 logarithm in the polymer, and by 2 to 4 logarithms in the nanocomposite that the antimicrobial effect of latter was notably increased. This study was based on applying this nanocomposite to improve conservation strategies for stony cultural heritage. This paper comprehends the global research scenario about incorporating cultural components in contemporary urban planning practice. Various urban cultural elements have been analysed under the umbrella of 'Urban Cultural Dynamics' (UCD). This study aims to identify hot spots and explore influential sources through a bibliometric investigation of the evolutionary patterns of cultural dynamics in urban planning research. Data was collected from the Web of Science core collection (1965-2021). The data mining tools VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, KNIME, and WordStat were used to analyse hot topics, keywords, influential journals, core papers, top authors, and cooperation networks of countries and institutions. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) is employed in journal analysis. The analysis showed that publications on UCD increased exponentially between 2016 and 2022. Italy (32), China (26), and Spain (18) are the top countries in total publications. Technical universities of Dresden and Munich have the most significant influence on UCD's research, with 103 and 101 total citations, respectively. Landscape and Urban Planning, Journal of Cultural Heritage, and Tourism Geographies are the top three consistently influential journals. The top ten core papers were identified. The keywords and topic analysis charted out the evolution of multidisciplinary UCD research topics. The hotspot analysis revealed the significance of cultural dynamics in sustainable urban development. The results highlighted the need for intercontinental cooperation between developed countries and the third world. The future scope of research on UCD topics is discussed in the conclusion. The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to preserve and promote cultural heritage has experienced significant growth in recent years. Among the various areas of cultural heritage, numismatics have emerged as a particularly promising field where we can develop AI solutions. Numismatics refers to the study of coins, tokens, paper money, and medals, which play a critical role in understanding human history and culture. However, there are still limited resources available to help researchers and collectors in the identification of coins. This is due to the vast number of coins in circulation, which presents a significant challenge in developing smart tools for classification tasks. This paper aims to provide a contribution to this setting. In particular, we start by creating a new dataset called EURO-Coin, which consists of images showing the side of coins with reliefs and is designed to facilitate the training and testing of AI models for euro coin classification. Then, we propose two approaches that leverage Convolutional Neural Networks and self-attention layers to classify the country and value of the coins. In our experiments, we obtain an accuracy of 86.9% for country classification and an accuracy of 96.4% for value classification. Image recognition and classification in the domain of cultural heritage is a complex task that usually requires good image quality and a large dataset. Small dataset is an apparent problem when data availability is limited, often resulting in poor classification performance. The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the performance of four machine learning algorithms, namely random forest, multilayer perceptron classifier, Naïve Bayes, and decision tree, that are used to classify features extracted using eleven pre-trained deep learning architectures from a small set of images representing cultural heritage. The findings imply that random forest and multilayer perceptron classifiers are the most appropriate for the task of image classification of small cultural heritage datasets, as they obtained the highest performance compared to the other two algorithms, particularly when DenseNet121, EfficientNetB0 and NASNetMobile architectures are used for feature extraction. In addition, for the classification of features extracted using NASNetMobile all the four utilized machine learning algorithms obtained high accuracy ranging from 88.89 to 95.56%. To address users' requirements, ArchGPT utilizes the reasoning capabilities of large language models (LLMs) for task planning. Operating under the use of tools, task-specific models, and professional architectural guidelines, it resolves issues within the architectural domain through sensible planning, combination, and invocation. New media technologies have opened up new possibilities for the communication of cultural heritage, and digital reading aligns with the participatory shift in museums, becoming an indispensable part of information communication. Currently, there exists a certain contradiction between the professional content of cultural heritage and the non-linear and immersive narrative style of new media. In order to find a balance between form and content, and explore the information communication pattern of cultural heritage in the era of mobile media, starting from practical issues, this article introduces the theory of embodied cognition, combines it with relevant theories in communication studies, and systematically explores the impact of embodied factors on audience reading behavior by using semi-structured interviews and grounded theory. The research reveals that embodied cognition, situational cognition, and interactive cognition have a significant impact on the digital reading information communication of cultural heritage on social media, which includes six factors: functional experience, sensory experience, interactive experience, scene simulation, emotional elevation and social experience. This study further constructed a theoretical model of the factors influencing the effectiveness of information communication in cultural heritage digital reading on the social media platform under the influence of embodied cognition theory, which confirms that these six factors play a significant role in the process of museum content generation, audience understanding, as well as the emergence of and the feedback loop of new meanings. In the globalization trend, China's cultural heritage is in danger of gradually disappearing. The protection and inheritance of these precious cultural resources has become a critical task. This paper focuses on the Miao batik culture in Guizhou Province, China, and explores the application of knowledge graphs, natural language processing, and deep learning techniques in the promotion and protection of batik culture. We propose a dual-channel mechanism that integrates semantic and visual information, aiming to connect batik pattern features with cultural connotations. First, we use natural language processing techniques to automatically extract batik-related entities and relationships from the literature, and construct and visualize a structured batik pattern knowledge graph. Based on this knowledge graph, users can textually search and understand the images, meanings, taboos, and other cultural information of specific patterns. Second, for the batik pattern classification, we propose an improved ResNet34 model. By embedding average pooling and convolutional operations into the residual blocks and introducing long-range residual connections, the classification performance is enhanced. By inputting pattern images into this model, their categories can be accurately identified, and then the underlying cultural connotations can be understood. Experimental results show that our model outperforms other mainstream models in evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score, achieving 94.46%, 94.47%, 93.62%, and 93.8%, respectively. This research provides new ideas for the digital protection of batik culture and demonstrates the great potential of artificial intelligence technology in cultural heritage protection. The study investigates the impact of vernacular architecture in Yazd, Iran, focusing on traditional housing and its influence on the socio-physical aspects of homes. It recommends incorporating traditional architectural elements while adapting to current needs to achieve sustainable urban living. Ancient wooden constructions, also known as wooden cultural relics, refers to ancient wood that has been modified or crafted by human activities. To ensure its preservation, it is crucial to gain further understanding of the decomposition mechanisms affecting archaeological wood. In this study, we investigated the microbiome diversity and cellulose decomposition processes in a 6300-year-old ancient wooden construction at the Tianluoshan site (7000–6300 cal BP) in Zhejiang Province, China. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) was employed to analyze the metagenomic functions, specifically focusing on the microbial communities' cellulose-degrading pathways using bioinformatic approaches. The findings revealed that the excavation of archaeological wood significantly altered the environment, leading to an accelerated deterioration process. This degradation was primarily influenced by carbohydrate metabolism and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism pathways within the complex ecosystem consisting of bacteria, archaea, fungi, microfauna, plants, and algae. Proteobacteria, actinobacteria, ascomycota, and basidiomycota were identified as the main sources of bacterial cellulose-degrading enzymes. The results obtained from this evaluation will provide valuable insights for the development of targeted conservation strategies and prioritization of preservation efforts for the ancient wooden constructions found in different regions of the Tianluoshan site. A virtual reality (VR) based cultural heritage exhibition (VRCHE) is an important type of VR-based museum exhibition. The user experience (UX) design of VRCHE has encountered opportunities and due to the differences in human–computer interaction between VR-based and conventional interaction interfaces, so proposing the UX model of VRCHE is crucial. Although there are some existing works that study the UX models of VRCHEs, they are not complete enough to describe the UX of VRCHEs or offer any design strategies due to the methodologies and experimental materials that they currently use. This study creates experiments utilizing grounded theory that combine qualitative and quantitative approaches. Then, the study synthesizes three-level coding and quantitative analysis findings from grounded theory, builds a detailed model of the VRCHE UX using theoretical coding, and proposes design strategies. The focus of this article is on the 10th grade of the geosite classification by ProGEO-98. Group (J) is the proposed “Historic, for development of geological sciences” group. Since this group, which we propose to define as the “Anthropogenic Geosite Group”, contains a very wide content, we focused on the subgroups of this group and tried to give examples from Turkey for each subgroup. The main subject of this article is the civilization traces left by human beings, starting from their shelters in the hunter-gatherer period, before moving to settled life, to the periods when they created advanced architectural works such as the Zeus Altar in Pergamum, Hierapolis, the Ancient city of Ephesus, underground cities/castles of Cappadoccia and the Alexander Sarcophagus, and their geological counterparts. This geosite class has been defined in detail for the first time in this article by dividing it into subclasses, and all cultural geology remains within this 10th Group are collectively called “Anthropogenic Geosite”. These locations, which are concrete evidence and “legacies” of human/nature interaction, are of great importance in terms of geological culture/cultural geology as well as the archaeological and anthropological values they carry. Since the onset of conflict in Syria in 2011, several heritage sites have suffered partial or complete destruction. The ancient city of Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, was placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2013, alongside five other Syrian heritage sites. Between 2015 and 2017, Palmyra experienced the loss of nearly 40% of its historic buildings and landmarks. The site's remote location and ongoing armed conflict pose additional challenges in accessing and preserving it. This paper introduces an interactive online platform employing 360° media to document and disseminate information about the world heritage site of Palmyra. The platform contributes to the safeguarding process of Palmyra, facilitating public engagement and interaction with the site. It also has potential applications for other sites in Syria and beyond. The platform allows users to explore both archival and current information of damaged historical monuments and buildings, revealing their layered histories before and after demolition. Employing interactive 360° media, similar to applications like Google Street View, the platform offers a reality-based digital environment. Users can virtually move into different buildings or follow specific pathways within the site, accessing archival information and documentation about particular monuments and buildings along their journey. This project serves as a unique informational resource for decision-makers and policy planners, aiding in the understanding of the site and the development of relevant strategies and recommendations. It also proves beneficial as an educational tool. The collective understanding fostered by this platform is expected to positively influence post-conflict restoration and reconstruction plans, making it an invaluable asset for research and educational purposes. Image restoration is a prominent field of research in computer vision. Restoring broken paintings, especially ancient Chinese artworks, is a significant challenge for current restoration models. The difficulty lies in realistically reinstating the intricate and delicate textures inherent in the original pieces. This process requires preserving the unique style and artistic characteristics of the ancient Chinese paintings. To enhance the effectiveness of restoring and preserving traditional Chinese paintings, this paper presents a framework called Sketch-Guided Restoration Generative Adversarial Network, termd SGRGAN. The framework employs sketch images as structural priors, providing essential information for the restoration process. Additionally, a novel Focal block is proposed to enhance the fusion and interaction of textural and structural elements. It is noteworthy that a BiSCCFormer block, incorporating a Bi-level routing attention mechanism, is devised to comprehensively grasp the structural and semantic details of the image, including its contours and layout. Extensive experiments and ablation studies on MaskCLP and Mural datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over previous state-of-the-art methods. Specifically, the model demonstrates outstanding visual fidelity, particularly in the restoration of landscape paintings. This study is to understand and analyze the development history, research hotspots, and research trends in the study of microbial diseases of cultural heritage through bibliometric analyses in order to fill the current gap of no literature review in this research field and to make certain contributions to the research in this field and the protection of cultural heritage. Bibliometric and visual analyses of the literature on cultural heritage microbial diseases in the Web of Science (WoS) core collection were carried out using VOSviewer and R-bibliometrix, choosing the two main literature types of papers and reviews. The emphasis was placed on analyzing and summarizing core research strengths, hotspots, and trends. Six hundred sixty-seven documents (573 articles and 94 reviews) were retrieved. αIn the WoS core collection, the first literature on cultural heritage microbial disease research was published in January 2000, and the annual number of publications from 2000 to 2009 did not exceed one; the annual number of publications from 2010 onwards increased rapidly, and after 2018, the number of publications per year exceeded 60, reaching 94 in 2020, which indicates that cultural heritage microbial disease research is booming. Our research showed that Italy, the USA, and China were the leading research countries, and Univ Milan was the institution with the most publications. International Biodeterioration &Biodegradation was the most published and co-cited journal, and Gu JD was the most prolific author. The research hotspots in the study of microbial diseases of cultural heritage mainly include biological degradation of cultural heritage; identification of diseased microorganisms and disease mechanisms; cultural heritage microbial disease prevention and control methods; monitoring, prevention, and control of diseased microorganisms in indoor air; antibacterial agents, especially essential oils, nanoparticles, and other safe and efficient antibacterial products research and development; and exploration of the mechanisms of biofilm protection of cultural heritage on cultural heritage surfaces. Monitoring and identifying cultural heritage microbial communities, identifying disease mechanisms, and researching safe and efficient bacteriostatic products such as essential oils and nanoparticles will be the main research directions in the field of cultural heritage microbial disease prevention and control in the future.
