Modern consumption patterns lead to massive waste, which poses challenges in storage and highlights the urgent need for more sustainable product development. Customer feedback on products plays a crucial role in product design, yet previous studies overlooked these invaluable insights. In response, this study introduces a novel systematic methodology that integrates the strengths of text mining, Quality Function Deployment (QFD), and the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). Text mining techniques are utilized to extract customer requirements from online platforms, while QFD is used to translate these requirements into technical specifications. By integrating the contradiction matrix from TRIZ theory with the triptych, technical conflicts are resolved. The design process for next-generation smart glasses is employed as an illustrative case to validate the proposed integrated innovation design approach. Analytical outcomes suggest that the introduced methodology can effectively address sustainable product design challenges and sets the stage for future advancements in smart glasses. Air quality in subway systems is crucial as it affects the health of passengers and staff. Although most tests of PM2.5 concentrations in subway stations have taken place in public areas, PM2.5 is less understood in workplaces. Few studies have estimated the cumulative inhaled dose of passengers based on real-time changes in PM2.5 concentrations as they commute. To clarify the above issues, this study first measured PM2.5 concentrations in four subway stations in Changchun, China, where measuring points included five workrooms. Then, passengers' exposure to PM2.5 during the whole subway commute (20–30 min) was measured and segmented inhalation was calculated. The results showed that PM2.5 concentration in public places ranged from 50 to 180 μg/m3, and was strongly correlated with outdoors. While the PM2.5 average concentration in workplaces was 60 µg/m3, and it was less affected by outdoor PM2.5 concentration. Passenger's cumulative inhalations in single commuting were about 42 μg and 100 μg when the outdoor PM2.5 concentrations were 20–30 μg/m3 and 120–180 μg/m3, respectively. The PM2.5 inhalation in carriages accounted for the largest proportion of the entire commuting, about 25–40%, because of the longer exposure time and higher PM2.5 concentrations. It is recommended to improve the tightness of the carriage and filter the fresh air to improve the air quality inside. The average daily PM2.5 inhaled by staff was 513.53 μg, which was 5–12 times higher than that of passengers. Due to environmental concerns, natural fibres are getting their importance as reinforcement in polymer composites. Nevertheless, their hydrophilic nature makes natural fibre composites susceptible to moisture attack. In this regard, one possible solution is to utilise hybrid synthetic/natural fibre composites. This paper aims to characterise the moisture absorption behaviour of carbon, flax, and hybrid carbon/flax composites. The composites were submerged in distilled water at 60 °C until saturation. Subsequently, tensile tests were conducted on dry and wet specimens. Results revealed that the moisture absorption with flax as the outer layers had attained a maximum moisture content of at least 470% higher than carbon as the outer layers. In addition, moisture absorption significantly influences the flax fibre composite, where only 27% of the specific tensile modulus was retained while the specific failure strain was doubled. The modified Halpin–Tsai equation also suggests that carbon fibre has a minimum of 5- and 3-fold larger stress transfer efficiency over the flax fibre with respect to the specific tensile modulus and strength, respectively. Through the modified Chokshi-Chaudhary-Gohil equation, the interphase volume fraction was estimated to be 8–11% for the hybrid composites. We previously investigated the transcriptome and proteome profiles of the murine ocular lens at six developmental time points including two embryonic (E15 and E18) and four postnatal time points (P0, P3, P6, and P9). Here, we extend our analyses to identify novel transcripts and peptides in developing mouse lens. We identified a total of 9,707 novel transcripts and 325 novel fusion genes in developing mouse lens. Additionally, we identified 13,281 novel alternative splicing (AS) events in mouse lens including 6,990 exon skipping (ES), 2,447 alternative 3′ splice site (A3SS), 1,900 alternative 5′ splice site (A5SS), 1,771 mutually exclusive exons (MXE), and 173 intron retention (IR). Finally, we integrated our OMIC (Transcriptome and Proteome) datasets identifying 20 novel peptides in mouse lens. All 20 peptides were validated through matching MS/MS spectra of synthetic peptides. Objectives: To compare the diagnostic yield of whole-body post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) imaging to post-mortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) imaging in a prospective study of fetuses and children.Methods: We compared PMCT and PMMR to conventional autopsy as the gold standard for the detection of (a) major pathological abnormalities related to the cause of death and (b) all diagnostic findings in five different body organ systems.Results: Eighty two cases (53 fetuses and 29 children) underwent PMCT and PMMR prior to autopsy, at which 55 major abnormalities were identified. Significantly more PMCT than PMMR examinations were non-diagnostic (18/82 vs. 4/82; 21.9 % vs. 4.9 %, diff 17.1 % (95 % CI 6.7, 27.6; p < 0.05)). PMMR gave an accurate diagnosis in 24/55 (43.64 %; 95 % CI 31.37, 56.73 %) compared to 18/55 PMCT (32.73 %; 95 % CI 21.81, 45.90). PMCT was particularly poor in fetuses <24 weeks, with 28.6 % (8.1, 46.4 %) more non-diagnostic scans. Where both PMCT and PMMR were diagnostic, PMMR gave slightly higher diagnostic accuracy than PMCT (62.8 % vs. 59.4 %).Conclusion: Unenhanced PMCT has limited value in detection of major pathology primarily because of poor-quality, non-diagnostic fetal images. The electrification process of the remote areas and decentralized areas is being a vital fact for the improvement of its eco-tourism issues such as the Cameron Highland of Malaysia. Renewable energy (RE) resources can be used extensively to support and fulfill the demand of the expected loads of these areas. This article presents an analysis of a complete off-grid wind-diesel-battery hybrid RE model. The main objective of the present analysis is to visualize the optimum volume of systems capable of fulfilling the requirements of 85 kWh/day primary load in coupled with 8.7 kW peak for 2 residential hotels of Cameron Highlands. The hybrid power system can be effective for the tourists of that area as it is a decentralized region of Malaysia. The main motto of this analysis is to minimize the electricity unit cost and ensure the most reliable and feasible system to fulfill the requirements of the desired or expected energy system using HOMER software. From the simulation result, it can be seen that 15 wind turbines (10 kW), 1 diesel generator (4 kW), and 2 battery (Hoppecke 4 OPzS) hybrid RE system is the most economically feasible and lowest cost of energy is nearing USD 0.199/kWh and net present cost is USD 77, 019. The decrement of the CO emissions also can be identified from the simulation results using that most feasible RE system including the renewable fraction value which is about 0.0914, 0.3 % capacity shortage and 20.3 % electricity as storage as compared to the other energy system. The paper presents measurements of friction of any ultra-thin film entrained into the contact of a pair of very smooth specimen subjected to entrainment in a converging micro-wedge of a special-purpose micro-tribometer. An ultra-thin film is expected to form at the boundary solids through adsorption of boundary active molecules. Fluids with linear and branched molecules are used in the investigation. It is found that the frictional characteristics of these films can be adequately described through use of Eyring thermal activation energy and a potential energy barrier to sustain conjunctional sliding motion. The combined experimental measurement and the simple activation energy approach shows that the thin molecular adsorbed films act like hydro Langmuir-Blodgett layers, the formation and frictional characteristics of which are affected by the competing mechanisms of adsorption, forced molecular re-ordering and discrete-fashion drainage through the contact by the solvation effect. This process is a complex function of the contact sliding velocity as well as a defined Eyring activation density (packing density of the molecules within the conjunction). It is shown that the contribution of solvation to friction is in the form of energy expended to eject layers of lubricant out of the contact, which unlike the case of micro-scale hydrodynamic films, is not a function of the sliding velocity. Biodiesel production from non-edible feedstocks is currently drawing much attention due to legitimate concerns about the effects of using edible oil for fuel. Pangium edule Reinw is a non-edible feedstock. Pangium is a tall tree native to the Micronesia, Melanesia and the mangrove swamps of South-East Asia. In this study, biodiesel production and characterization from P. edule oil was reported. The seeds were obtained from Bogor, Indonesia. The oil was found to have an acid value of 19.62 mg KOH/g oil. Therefore, a two-step acid-base-catalysed transesterification was used to produce biodiesel. This was followed by evaluating the physical and chemical properties of biodiesel and its blends with diesel. It has been found that the determined properties of P. edule methyl ester indicate that the oil can be considered as a future biodiesel source. The most remarkable feature of P. edule is its cloud, pour and cold filter plugging points. This biodiesel yielded cloud, pour and cold filter plugging points of -6, -4 and -8 °C, respectively. This indicates the viability of using this biodiesel in cold countries. Therefore, it is suggested that more research should be conducted on P. edule for future biodiesel production. This paper introduces an improved friction model accounting for elastoplastic behavior of interacting asperities along contiguous rough surfaces for a line contact solution. It is based on Greenwood and Tripp's original boundary friction model and specifically tailored for a boundary regime of lubrication. The numerical solution of Reynolds' equation is achieved by implementing Elrod's cavitation algorithm for a one dimensional line contact. The transience in the numerical solution is retained by accounting for the squeeze film term in Reynolds' equation under fixed loading conditions and varying sliding motion. A sliding bearing rig is used to measure friction and compare the results with the prediction made using the approach highlighted above. The numerical/experimental results show good agreement. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based solid polymer electrolyte consisting lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF), ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) have been prepared using solution casting method. Comparative studies were done on unplasticized PAN-LiBF system and the PAN plasticized system with the novel binary plasticizers of EC and DMP in the ratio of 1:1 by the variation of LiBF concentration. The highest room temperature conductivity of electrolyte in PAN-LiBF system is 1.83 × 10 S cm while 1.08 × 10 S cm is obtained from PAN-EC-DMP-LiBF system. The complexation and structure of polymer electrolytes have been investigated as function of LiBF content at different weight percentages. The morphology and crystalline phase of polymer host is completely changed on the addition of salt and plasticizers. A novel shrouded wind-solar hybrid renewable energy and rain water harvester with an omni-directional-guide-vane (ODGV) for urban high-rise application is introduced. The ODGV surrounds the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and enhances the VAWT performance by increasing the on-coming wind speed and guiding it to an optimum flow angle before it interacts with the rotor blades. An ODGV scaled model was built and tested in the laboratory. The experimental results show that the rotational speed of the VAWT increases by about 2 times. Simulations show that the installation of the ODGV increases the torque output of a single-bladed VAWT by 206% for tip speed ratio of 0.4. The result also reveals that higher positive torque can be achieved when the blade tangential force at all radial positions is optimized. In conclusion, the ODGV improves the power output of a VAWT and this integrated design promotes the installation of wind energy systems in urban areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There remains a misconception that arterial ischaemic stroke (AIS) is a rare childhood disorder. Approximately 2–6/100,000 children are affected annually, and it is one of the top ten causes of childhood death. Following the ictus, up to 25% of children will have a recurrence, and two thirds of children will have a long-term disability with considerable socio-economic burden. The established vascular risk factors seen in adult stroke are rare in children. Instead, childhood AIS is associated with a variety of underlying aetiologies, including cerebral arteriopathies, sickle cell disease, cardio-embolic disease, infection, head and neck trauma, genetic/metabolic disease and prothrombotic abnormalities. Approximately 50% of children will have another recognised medical condition, and many children will have multiple risk factors. Given the complexity of the presentation and the potential ambiguity of the clinical findings, imaging is often the most revealing aspect of the diagnostic workup during both an acute and chronic presentation. This review considers the practical issues related to imaging children and looks at some of the controversies pertaining to aetiology and its implication for stroke management. It aims to give an overview of childhood arterial ischaemic stroke and to highlight the importance of both acute and delayed vascular imaging in the diagnosis, management and stratification of further stroke risk. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is estimated to cause 30–50,000 cases of encephalitis every year. The disease occurs mainly in rural Asia and is transmitted to humans from birds and pigs by mosquitoes of the genus Culex. JE is diagnosed with antibody testing of the serum and CSF, but this is not available in many hospitals. Neuroimaging abnormalities, particularly thalamic hypodensity on computed tomography (CT) and hyperintensity on T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been described in case studies, but their usefulness for diagnosing JE is not known. We have therefore evaluated the usefulness of neuroimaging (CT and MRI) for the diagnosis of JE. The findings of thalamic lesions were compared with the final serological diagnosis in a cohort of 75 patients (children and adults) with suspected CNS infections in Southern Vietnam, a JEV endemic area. Thalamic lesions on CT and/or MRI combined had sensitivity 23% (95% confidence interval 12.9–33.1%), specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100% and negative predictive value 42.1% (95% confidence interval 30.2–53.8%) for a diagnosis of JE in this cohort. Over time, the thalamic lesions resolved in some patients. One patient showed disappearance of lesions on CT followed by reappearance of the lesions some time later, known as the fogging effect. To create new standards for radiological indices of dilated ventricles and to compare these with subjectively assessed ventricular size. One hundred healthy controls (54 females), birth weight above 3,000 g, were followed throughout childhood as part of a longitudinal study of ex-prematures. All had a 3 Tesla brain magnetic resonance scan at age 17–20, and the following measurements were performed: biparietal and occipitofrontal diameters, width and depth of the frontal and occipital horns, diameter of the third ventricle and the frontal sub-arachnoid space. Ventricular size was judged subjectively by two neuroradiologists as being normal, or mildly, moderately or severely dilated. Head circumference was 31 mm higher for males than for females (95% confidence interval (CI) 25–28, p < 0.001). Similar, ventricular size except for the depth of the right frontal horn was larger for male; however, the observed differences were partly accounted for by the larger head circumference. Normative sex specific standards for different cerebral measurements were presented as mean and ranges and additional 2.5, 10, 50, 90, 97.5 percentiles. The mean depth of the left ventricle was larger than the right for males, with an observed difference of 0.6 mm in male (95% CI 0.2–0.9, p = 0.005). The mean width of the left ventricle was larger than the right for females, with an observed difference of 0.4 mm in male (95% CI 0.1–0.7, p = 0.018). Two subjects were judged to have moderately and 36 to have mildly dilated ventricles by observer one, while figures for observer two were one and 14. Overall, the two observers agreed on 15 having either mild or moderate dilatation (kappa 0.43). For both sexes, the mean depth of the frontal horns as well as of the larger occipital horns differed significantly between the no dilatation and the mild/moderate dilatation groups. In our unselected cohort of healthy 19-year-olds, a high total of 14% was diagnosed to have dilated cerebral ventricles when subjectively assessed by an experienced neuroradiologist, underscoring the need for our new normative standards. Interferon gamma (IFN-?) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) are believed to play opposing roles in host immunity against mycobacterial infection. IFN-?activates macrophages, while IL-10 downregulates the expression of T helper type 1 cytokines, MHC class II antigens and costimulatory molecules on macrophages. Associations of IFN-?-179 (G/T),+874 (A/T),+875 miscrosatellite CA repeats and+4766 (C/T), and IL-10-1082 (A/G),-819 (C/T) and-592 (C/A) with tuberculosis (TB) were investigated in 385 HIV-negative patients and 451 controls in a Hong Kong Chinese population. The frequency of a low IFN-?-producing+874 A/A genotype was significantly over-represented in the patient group (P<0.001, OR=3.79, 95%CI=1.93-7.45). We identified 10 alleles in the IFN-?CA repeats and observed a significant difference in allele frequency distribution between patients and controls (P<0.001). By grouping alleles into 12 and non-12 CA repeats, the non-12/non-12 genotype yielded a similar significant result (P<0.001, OR=4.56, 95%CI=2.21-9.43) as observed in+874 A/A genotype. Weak associations of the IL-10 GCC/-genotype (P=0.04) and the low IFN-?-producing A/A genotype (P=0.06) with TB relapse/extrapulmonary cases were found. The evolution of post-industrial society is resulting in a `knowledge economy.' The changes involve `knowledge workers' in contrast to `manual workers' of the past industrial economy. The quantity and quality of knowledge workers will determine success in national borderless competition. Although the United State's recent prosperity and near perfect employment rate are exemplary, the technology leading to this success has been developed and shared by traditional industrial powers, i.e., Japan and France, and mid-tech powers such as South Korea. This paper examines methods by which South Korea incorporates American applications of the knowledge economy into its system. The interdisciplinary approach includes sociological, linguistic, educational, and ethical elements. Suggested methods include double loop sharing, knowledge management with electronic support systems, professional journals, and professional international conferences. This paper offers a brief history and synopsis of current developments in knowledge-based systems, and suggests South Korean and American applications. We report five cases of pediatric disseminated low-grade gliomas of the brainstem or spinal cord that exhibited an unusual, cystic pattern. Leptomeningeal disease was present in three of these at diagnosis, and was detected shortly afterwards in the other two. Neuropsychological deficits and the relationship to brain pathology were examined in 13 primary progressive (PP) and 12 secondary progressive (SP) multiple sclerosis patients with a similar duration of the progressive phase and comparable physical disability. A battery of neuropsychological tests to assess attention, short-term and working memory was administered to the patients, and their performance was compared to that of 20 healthy controls matched for age and premorbid IQ. Total cerebral lesion load on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging was measured in the patients. Both PP and SP patients performed significantly worse than controls in most of the neuropsychological tests. There were only subtle differences between SP and PP on the working memory task although magnetic resonance imaging lesion load was significantly higher in SP than in PP patients. In this exploratory study only subtle differences in cognitive impairment were detected between SP and PP patients matched for physical disability and relevant illness features. The results also suggest that the severity of cognitive impairment cannot be fully explained by the extent of abnormalities detected on conventional T2-weighted magnetic resonance images, and that other pathological abnormalities such as in normal-appearing white matter are likely to be involved. This study was carried out using MRI (proton density-and T2-weighted) on 16 HIV-negative controls, 9 symptom-free HIV-positive patients and 25 with CDC IV HIV disease. The studies from this last group had previously been allocated by a radiologist to the following categories: 8 with focal mass lesions and normal-appearing white matter; 9 with diffuse encephalopathy (high signal on T2-weighted images, affecting most or all of the white matter) and 8 with patchy encephalopathy (high signal affecting only one or two areas within the white matter). Moran's I, a statistic of spatial autocorrelation, was calculated for the grey-scale values of a sampled pixel array from a central white matter region of each of the images. All values of Moran's I calculated in this study showed a large positive excess over the expected value under randomisation, indicating highly significant positive autocorrelation in the spatial arrangement of the grey-scale values. On T2-weighted images a statistically significant increase in the mean value of Moran's I, compared with controls, was found in the diffuse encephalopathy group, indicating that quantifiable changes in the spatial autocorrelation of pixel data can be related to recognised qualitative changes in the appearance of white matter in subjects with HIV disease. A lesser, but significant, rise in the mean value of Moran's I was also found in the focal mass lesion group, suggesting that changes in spatial autocorrelation may indicate pathological change in advance of qualitative MRI changes. Here we report whole genome sequencing of four individuals (H3, H4, H5, and H6) from a family of Pakistani descent. Whole genome sequencing yielded 1084.92, 894.73, 1068.62, and 1005.77 million mapped reads corresponding to 162.73, 134.21, 160.29, and 150.86 Gb sequence data and 52.49x, 43.29x, 51.70x, and 48.66x average coverage for H3, H4, H5, and H6, respectively. We identified 3,529,659, 3,478,495, 3,407,895, and 3,426,862 variants in the genomes of H3, H4, H5, and H6, respectively, including 1,668,024 variants common in the four genomes. Further, we identified 42,422, 39,824, 28,599, and 35,206 novel variants in the genomes of H3, H4, H5, and H6, respectively. A major fraction of the variants identified in the four genomes reside within the intergenic regions of the genome. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotype based comparative analysis with ethnic populations of 1000 Genomes database linked the ancestry of all four genomes with the South Asian populations, which was further supported by mitochondria based haplogroup analysis. It has been postulated that all patients with pantothenate kinase 2 (PANK2) mutations causing pantothenate-kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) are associated with the 'eye-of-the-tiger' sign on MRI. We report a pair of siblings who presented with dystonia and who have been found to be homozygous for 104C>A, S35X mutation, confirming the diagnosis of PKAN. The article provides information about strokes. Stroke is an important pediatric illness and is one of the top ten causes of childhood death. At least two-thirds of children affected by ischaemic stroke have residual impairments spanning many domains of function and up to a fifth of them have a recurrence. Epidemiological studies have established that as many children are affected by stroke as by brain tumor. However, the collaborative networks established for the study and treatment of pediatric malignancies are only now evolving in the field of childhood stroke. Serial IV pharmacokinetic studies of prednisolone (1 mg/kg) in groups of 3 patients over a 1 month period of rifampin co-treatment or after its withdrawal, revealed significant changes in the area under the curve, the total clearance, the non-renal clearance and the half-life. The changes in the pharmacokinetic parameters reached a 1.5 to 2-fold plateau after 2 weeks and the half maximal effect was attained within 5 days.
